Industry update Rentokil Initial launches new air purifier to tackle Coronavirus in the air*

R

entokil Initial now distributes VIRuSkILLERTM, air purification technology proven to kill 99.9999% of viruses with a single air pass, including coronavirus. unlike traditional air purifiers that can ‘trap’ airborne particles and microbes, the VIRuSkILLERTM has a unique reactor chamber that uses patented ultraviolet-c (uV-c) technology,

alongside a triple filtration system. When placed correctly, the unit takes control of the airflow in a room, drawing contaminated air in from the ‘breathing zone’ and then releasing fresh, clean air in return. As well as deploying carbon and HEPA filters, VIRuSkILLERTM uses patented ultraviolet-c (uVc) technology. This all in one solution effectively filters dirty air, neutralises

toxic air and decontaminates sick air. Call us today 0800 731 0802 or visit initial.co.uk/infection-control/ air-purifier/ *When independently tested against coronavirus DF2 (a surrogate for coronavirus), Adenovirus, Influenza and Polio, the unit was found to kill 99.9999% of viruses on a single air pass.

NHBF stresses need for hair and beauty in Tier 4

T

he NHBF is pressing for the Scottish Government to provide immediate financial support for hair and beauty salons and barbershops to minimise financial impact. Hair and beauty businesses in Tier 4 must close. A temporary closure grant of £2,000-£3,000 will be available to businesses forced to shut. This will be paid every four weeks in arrears as long

as restrictions last. Richard Lambert, chief executive of the NHBF, says: “We are speaking with the Scottish Government to ensure that this money reaches our sector urgently. After everything last year there will be some businesses that sadly just won’t survive. We urge the Scottish Government to allow salons to open at the earliest possible opportunity.” For more information and FAQs,

NHBF requests support for hair and beauty in Northern Ireland

T

he NHBF is now pressing the Northern Ireland Government for urgent clarification on what financial support will be available to our sector and how this will be made available for those who most need it. Richard Lambert, chief executive of the NHBF, said: “I’m not sure any government understands the fact that

6 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.co.uk

it isn’t just a case of hair and beauty salons and barbershops simply opening doors on a new date. This will put a massive strain on those who work in the industry as they try to accommodate and re-coup the money they have lost during this pandemic.” In a recent NHBF poll, an overwhelming 96% of salons and barbershops in Northern Ireland had

not been contacted via Test, Trace and Protect (4,107), with only 186 (4%) responding ‘Yes’. For more information and FAQs, please visit www.nhbf.co.uk/ coronavirus and follow the National Hair & Beauty Federation on social at @nhbfsocial

National Apprenticeship Week This February, we celebrate the 14th annual National Apprenticeship Week. The theme, “Build the Future,” provides an opportunity to reflect on the amazing work being done by apprentices, employers and training providers across the country.

E

mployers of all sizes have overcome many challenges during these unprecedented times, and many while employing apprentices. Employers train, retain and achieve with apprentices while helping those individuals develop skills and knowledge required for rewarding careers; employers benefit as well, being able to build a workforce with future-ready skills. The Apprenticeship Frameworks have now been phased out to welcome the new Professional Standards. The Government is currently offering a financial incentive to employers in England who take on an apprentice. An incentive payment will be made to employers who hire an apprentice before 31st March 2021 so there’s still time to take advantage of this.* VTcT works with employers, training providers and apprentices to provide high-quality, robust apprenticeships in the Hair and Barbering sector. Bringing new energy, creativity and ideas to your business, developing your own talent and offering an individual a great opportunity are just some of the reasons to take on an apprentice. Data compiled from the centre for Economic Research, National Apprenticeship Service and Gov.uk showed that employers throughout the uk continue to choose to recruit apprentices and below are a few reasons why:

Increase production and revenue on average, engaged and productive

8 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.co.uk

apprentices boost productivity to businesses by £214 per week. 78% of employers agreed that apprentices help to make their workplace more productive.

Close the skills gap A skills gap is currently affecting many companies with hard to fill vacancies. However, 83% of employers who employ apprentices rely on their apprenticeship programme to provide the skilled workers they need for their company’s future. Apprentices can be full-time or part-time, allowing for recruitment based on the needs of the business so employers can recruit and train an apprentice with the specific skills required for their business. Many apprentices stay on as permanent staff thus proving to be a crucial recruiting channel for barbershops.

Grow your business According to the National Apprenticeships Service data, 80% of

companies who invest in apprentices have reported a significant increase in employee retention. The rewards can be clearly felt by all involved—whether learner, educator or employer. one educator described the pleasure of going into a salon and “seeing apprentices still there years on as full-time staff” while an employer described the joy they find in “helping apprentices discover their specialties.” As an assessment and awarding organization offering apprenticeship qualifications in Hair, Barbering and Beauty, as well as End-point Assessment services, VTcT is keen to champion apprenticeships all year round. BARBERSHoP oF THE MoNTH

The Barbershop by João Rocha Returning for his second appearance in the Barber Magazine, we have the one, the only, João Rocha talking us through his barbershop and it’s huge following!

O

ne thing that really makes The Barbershop by João Rocha stand out is the fact that João and his team designed it, for that added personal touch. When you step in, you really feel like there is a heap of personality just poured into the soul of the barbershop. João said: “It is a project that is constantly being built and evolving. We are always thinking about something to modify or add, whilst always thinking about our professionals and our customers’ comfort. our ideas obviously appear in our minds due to the fact that we travel a lot, visiting many barbershops in several countries. This really ends up influencing the ideas that come up.” The shop has been open since 2014, starting as a small space with only one chair available, which apparently wasn’t even a real barbering chair! “I remember that I only spent €30 on a mirror and €200 on a chair. At the time, it was the cheapest, and I wasn’t sure if things were going to work out or not.” Adds João.

10 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.co.uk

You can really tell where the inspiration came from within the shop, as it’s heavily modelled after the American barbershop style. You’re always greeted with interesting scents of aftershaves when you enter. This was a solid base for João before finding his own niche style. When the shop first opened, it

was simply titled Barbeiro João Rocha as it was just himself working there. However, when the expansion eventually came, and João had to recruit more team members, he had to change things up a little. “When I created my team, I felt the need to come up with a new name. I wanted the words “The Barbershop” because it was the easiest for people to understand what we were. I then tried only calling it The Barbershop, but people kept calling us by my own name, so we decided on The Barbershop by João Rocha.” Adds João. Not only is the barbershop stylish and successful, but also boasts of a celebrity clientele! Being known as a barbershop for sports personalities, The Barbershop by João Rocha frequently appears in the news, on television and in magazines, such as this! celebrities and sports personalities aside, one of the things that the team prides themselves on most is their annual event. João explains: “our highlight is the event we organise,

BARBERSHoP oF THE MoNTH our academy better known as Barber Experience. With several trainers from different parts of the world, it is a moment not only for sharing information, but also achieving familiarity with all sorts of professionals in the field.” Defining himself as a very versatile barber, João doesn’t want to be known solely for his celebrity cuts. However, he admits cutting a client’s hair and then seeing them live on the television, or entertaining a packed sports stadium is something he is proud of. João tells us that they have worked incredibly hard to make all of this happen, but they have also had a stroke of luck. He continues: “I was recently nominated for A-list Barber of the Year at the global Barber Grammys. We have also been congratulated with the national medal of honour and medal of municipal merit.” one of the biggest motives for the shop is putting the clients first. After cutting his first client’s hair and seeing their smile at the result, back in the day, João was able to realise that this is what he wanted to do as a career, for the rest of his life. “Transforming people and getting their smile and seeing their appreciation is something extraordinary. Seeing the difference we make in people’s lives, and their self-esteem, is spectacular!” Adds João. The customers who visit The Barbershop by João Rocha are often amazed by the décor because it’s something that they don’t see on a regular basis. João continues: “Even tourists from other countries who visit us always praise our space, which is very good and gives us the certainty that we are on the right path!” With all of the fame in the barbering world, João and his team still carry a powerful sense of modesty. “I don’t know what makes us different from others, but I know that here we take our profession very seriously. We never take anything for granted. We are never satisfied with our work, we invest a lot every year in training, and we serve each client like a superstar. It’s because each customer is unique and special.” João invites all of our readers (that’s right, you) to visit the Azores and his barbershop. “We live in the middle of the Atlantic, it’s a real paradise.” Follow @thebarbershopbyjoaorocha

BuSINESS DEVELoPMENT

The Workspace Marketplace We sit down with Yas Alimam, Founder & CEO of HotPatch, to find out about how they “Make Space Work” to benefit you and your business.

Hi Yas. So, what can you tell me about HotPatch? HotPatch is the ‘Workspace Marketplace’. We connect people with available, rentable workspace to those seeking them. The perfect example being barbershop owners and barbers hiring chairs. HotPatch provides an ideal solution to an extremely agile workforce. We want to change the way we think about workspaces. We want to ‘Make Space Work’, hence our strapline!

Tell me about the services HotPatch offers. HotPatch is a platform that allows all workspace to be listed in one single place. It’s free to list your space and free to join the platform; our focus since day one has been to stay user-friendly, and transparent. We only ever charge a fee once a booking is confirmed through the platform. The great thing is, once you are listed, there is no onerous maintenance required by our hosts. Sit back and watch the bookings roll in through a single point of contact with a safe and secure booking and payment system. The whole reason HotPatch is here is to give increased independence and flexibility, as well as simplicity. In terms of counting on the quality of service and trust of community members,

12 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.co.uk

we (or rather the community) do this through our ratings and review system!

What inspired the company to start distributing these services? Whilst researching another business project, and realising that the venture would have underused space for periods throughout the day, we thought it would be a great idea to share and monetise the workspace to help with our fixed costs. It soon became apparent that finding a platform to advertise our workspace was a difficult task. It seemed that there was no single platform that offered a consistent, user-friendly experience and approach to listing and renting workspaces. We knew that there had to be an easier way to list and rent workspaces (or Patches as we like to call them). our response was to solve this problem, so we created HotPatch!

If I were a barbershop owner, what would my shop gain from using HotPatch? Barbershop owners can benefit from the HotPatch platform by listing their chairs to rent for free, communicate directly with potential users, and receive payment safely and securely through our platform. No more idle space

costing money, time to flip it on its head and let the space earn income or as we say: ‘Make Space work’! It is completely free to join, and our platform offers multiple search and navigation tools that make searching for a Patch somewhat of a joy and, just as owners can monetise the space and make it work, barbers can find the perfect space for them and ‘Make Space Work’ too!

Any general thoughts on HotPatch which you’d like to share? We have been well received by those we work with and have built a community of HotPatchers who can offer support to one another and make the most from workspaces. ultimately, we are here to make things easier, and even though we launched in the midst of a global pandemic, we can’t thank our community enough for the support they have shown us in bringing the HotPatch platform to the market. We have loved every minute of our journey of shaping the future of workspace so far and will continue to grow our HotPatch community and keep helping others Make Space Work! Follow @hotpatch_

CREATE THIS STYLE

The 2021 fade With several various styles in the past, this client wanted something new. Rhys Whitehouse walks us through a textured crop with a stretched skin fade after five weeks of growth.

Rhys Whitehouse

Finished Look

Step 1 - The client’s hair growth patterns grow towards the face, and the thickness of his hair and the curls will work well when trying to create texture. Due to the weaker areas of density around his ears, a skin fade will draw attention away from that.

16 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.Co.uk

Step 2 - I thoroughly wet the hair down and evenly section off a classic “horse-shoe” type piece, distributing fairly between the crown and the occipital lobe. I do the same towards the fringe, sectioning a “veil” evenly from the front. After creating these sections, take small diagonal sections from the crown along the weight. Ensure to over-direct your angle for a squarer finish and under-direct for a rounder finish depending on your desired result..

CREATE THIS STYLE

Step 3 - I used a Panasonic ER-GP81 with a 2 guard to create a base layer of a 2, meeting my weight line with the corner of the shaped fringe. I will then do this symmetrically either side of the head and use my comb to create a straight weight line/ridge. After this, I use Wahl Magic Clips with a flat-blade and a classic ceramic combination with an open 1-guard, flicking out just underneath the weight line. I wanted to go for something more stretched and classic with this client, so my base is between a low and a mid. I do this with Wahl Cordless Detailer Li over the open one-base and then foil out the result using a Wahl Finale.

Step 4 - Working on the top, I create a straight profile section in the centre of the hair measured from the head’s apex toward the fringe and the longest point of the crown. Then, I pull up horizontal sections from the back of the head and club cut to match through the hair until I meet the top layers of the fringe. Comb the fringe down and cut off the excess hair which hangs over the first base layer. Comb all the hair forward and slice through diagonally several times, ensuring the hair is still wet. Apply pre-styling spray or salt spray and diffuse dry on a low heat, making small circles with the dryer.

Step 5 - I will then use a closed 1 and begin to descend, curving out towards the face to create a darker area to enhance and frame the hairline. After this, a 0.5 guard and then a 0.25, finished with a closed 0. Take time going over this and ensure to make good use from your clipper lever. once I am happy with the gradient, I’ll use a detailer turned over and flick the baseline out, picking out any darker areas using my scissors.

Step 6 - To soften the weight line, thinners can be used in moderation and used towards the end of the hair rather than the base. often, I will use an open 3 guard and lightly flick out over the weight-line to feather it out slightly. Take your time doing this as it can completely change the shape of the haircut and how you frame the eyes.

Step 7 - once thoroughly blow-dried and you are happy with your fade, it’s time to style it! For this cut, I am utilising my client’s thickness and his curls; It has been diffused with pre-styling spray, so it already has some hold. However, I am looking for a heavy split texture finish to really emphasise the texture, so I use texturising/thickening powder and a separation comb. I achieve the texture shown by making a “zig-zag” motion from the back of the head towards the front. I do this several times over all of the hair and then pick out and break up smaller areas to really emphasise the layering and separation.

Step 8 - Finishing the cut, I use a light hairspray and comb the weight-lines towards the face. I pay close attention to ensuring that the fringe has no strays, maintains a consistent thickness from left to right and the convex shape is symmetrical. The client loves this style due to its low maintenance, wear-ability, longevity and how it compliments his hair type and head shape. The textured crop has become a modern classic and really is one of my favourites haircuts to do. Follow @ r.whitehouse_cuts

There is no such thing as too safe We had the chance to talk with David Such of DM Intelligent who tells us a little about why owning one of their UVC steriliser lamps will be beneficial to your business.

A

fter delving deep into some of DM Intelligent’s amazing products in previous issues, we wanted to discuss how, especially during this new lockdown, it might be a smart idea to invest in their UVC lamps.

Hi David. So, how are DM Intelligent’s products beneficial to barbershop owners in the current climate? The UVC steriliser lamp is a no risk, high reward product to ensure that your workplace is free of bacteria, mould and all viruses at all times, not just throughout COVID-19. The unit is compact, intelligent and user friendly. There is no threat when used correctly, all bacteria/ viruses and mould are eradicated for the next 24 hours within a five metre radius of the lamp once the procedure has been completed! Given the size of most barbershops, one use daily with our UVC steriliser lamp would ensure the utmost cleanliness for your premises.

How would stocking DM Intelligent products demonstrate that barbers care about their clientele? An extra layer of protection for customers’ safety

18 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.CO.UK

and peace of mind is vital in the current climate, and so the UVC steriliser lamp naturally disinfects the surrounding area neutralising any virus’ in the vicinity.

Any general thoughts? With the re-introduction of the tier system, the UVC steriliser acts as the final part of a deep clean process for barbershop owners as there is an already high requirement for cleanliness in this environment/industry. We already have our UVC lamps in various care homes, pubs, restaurants and even other barbershops. Not only will the sterilising lamps provide a virus, bacteria & mould free environment; they will save cleaning time and longterm financial costs. Along with the UVC sterilising unit, you will receive a sign to be placed in public view in your premises to publicise that you have gone the extra mile to reassure your customers upon arrival that the premises are free from all virus’ and germs.

For more information on why you should invest in a UVC steriliser lamp, and to place an order for yours please visit dmcompany.co.uk, e-Mail info@dmcompany.co.uk or call 0121 429 8208

BARBERS AROUND THE WORLD

From the ground up Jakub Harendarczyk is a barber who has brought an outstanding amount of positivity to his town of Jarocin in Poland. We had a chance to talk with him about his passion, his drive and his own shop.

20 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.co.uk

BARBERS ARouND THE WoRLD You have your own barbershop. What can you tell me about that? In my hometown, I own capone Barber Shop. It was one of the first barbershops in Poland, and we’ve been open for over seven years now. When we first started out, the name of the shop was just Barber Shop Jarocin, due to the lack of popularity. However, when I was watching Boardwalk Empire, I came up with an idea! I saw a story about Al capone and felt inspired. We have the highest-rated service in town and, I think, we’re one of the best classics in Poland. As they say: “old school but never old fashioned”! Jarocin is known for organizing the Polish Woodstock while Poland was under communism and has always been on the forefront for trends. My father arranged it so, in a way, I’m following in his footsteps by making this town stand out a little more!

You’ve been working on bringing barbering to local schools, can you please tell me about that? In my hometown, I’m a teacher as well as a barber. I do this because, in Poland, young hairdressing students don’t have the opportunity to learn what they should! I’ve been working with my friends at koVAS.supply and Lockhart’s Authentic. Together, we were able to start the first barbering class at a public high school!

koVAS.supply provide the products and class materials. The aim is to create this all from the bottom up and to eventually bring it to other schools nationwide. The idea is to educate young barbers on quality, craft products that inspire excellence and an unyielding commitment to quality. We want to raise them on Lockhart’s Authentic products the same way that a lot of barbers grew up with brands such as American crew. The koVAS.supply team help show my students that they are not alone on their journey. We want to show them

the right way, the real craft and with the best products!

How does barbering in Poland differ from barbering in the UK? Is there anything which UK barbers can learn from barbers in Poland? When I worked in England, I was enchanted by how people treated the experience and were treated in the barbershop. It was wonderful! It’s a kind of artistry for the barbers! Something that a lot of people in the uk don’t know is that you don’t just go there for a haircut. You go to spend time there, to talk and to enjoy yourself. Something that barbers in England could potentially learn from us is the love of a variety of pomades! Barbers should be playing more with them, discovering new connections, brands and styles and telling the people in their local town about them.

Any general thoughts you’d like to share? I would like to say something to all of the young barbers. Be sure to pay attention and learn from your teachers every day! You will win competitions, be successful and will certainly be grateful for the positions in which you land in the world. Follow @jacob_the_barberr_

BARBERING BluNdERs

A little off the top Do you ever feel the need to do something to really get your name out there? The need to make yourself known in the barbering world by doing something a little more drastic? This barber took it a step beyond to show her clients that she means business!

B

echeanu daniela Gabriela, barber at House of Barbers, was casually getting on with her usual day-to-day. Everything was working out amazingly! The clientele was growing, new styles were trending, and Becheanu’s work was making a name for itself! At the time, Becheanu would rock the look of long, blonde hair which would catch the attention of clients throughout the day. As with anyone, her hair is a strong, defining factor in her character. However, one day she thought to herself that something needed to change. To promote confidence in both herself, and her clientele, Becheanu decided that a statement needed to be made to show the world that it’s ok to be a little more drastic sometimes! In a split impulse decision, Becheanu decided that it was time to cut off her hair to inspire others. “My long, blonde hair was cut in just a few seconds when I thought I needed to draw more attention. Afterwards, it was very easy to convince my clients that it’s ok to change your haircuts from classic to modern, simple to creative with extravagant styles that require courage.” Becheanu said. she says that she did this out of respect for her clients, demonstrating that it’s ok to have the courage to try out elaborate styles every now and then. After the trim, the spotlight was on Becheanu. she would often be asked about her new style, especially from the clients who already knew her. Not only did this drum up some extra business, but also demonstrated a sense of pride within both herself and the barbershop. Becheanu continues: “Every customer was surprised when they looked at me without my long hair! For that, I gained more customers, more applause and much more revenue

22 | THEBARBERMAGAZINE.co.uk

overall!” Noticing that sometimes a statement has to be made to show that you mean business, Becheanu tells us: “I followed my dreams and have the most beautiful feeling of joy with my work”. We are

part of a proud industry and hope to see others looking to improve their business in Becheanu’s footsteps. Want to stay in the loop with Becheanu’s barbering adventure? Follow @sofycuts for more!

ToP FIVE

Staying relevant The boys from Waterman & Webb are back at it again! This time round, they’re walking us through their top five tips on keeping your business up to scratch during the national lockdown.

D

uring the November lockdown, moving into Tier 4 and then entering a second national lockdown, we have tried to keep in contact with our clients as much as we can. I can definitely admit that it was hard when we couldn’t see a light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully, with the new vaccines, we can all get back to business in some way in the coming months. We’ve spent the first few weeks contacting clients to move appointments, and to also check in with clients who we knew would be on their own during the lockdown. We have also started a mailing list in which clients can take a survey on the running of our business. This is a great way to get inside information from clients that they wouldn’t necessarily tell you in person. A great method for evolving your business into a more consumer-friendly environment.

Get your house in order our first tip would be to get your business in order. None of us can predict how long this pandemic will last and there could be more restrictions coming. I would highly recommend looking at your business finances and

make sure you’re not overspending on anything!

Get creative - Create a survey! We would recommend setting up a survey of your business. Ask questions that only your clients will know the answers too. This will give you a great insight into what you can do to make your business even better when reopening.

Social media Whatever social media channels you use, I recommend keeping them updated. This is the first place people will look for you online. You want to keep them up to date with what you’re up to.

Keep on top of your premises Visit your premises and have a deep look at it. Is there something that has needed doing for ages? Does the paint need topping-up? Does it need a deep clean? You want to get your premises looking pristine for when you can allow your clients back over the threshold.

Look after yourself Lockdown and the tier system can be hard for people in our industry. Most of us had at least a third of 2020 closed, and the start of 2021 looks like it’s to be going the same way. The most important thing for your business is you. Spend the time off to look after yourself in body and in mind. This will give you the perfect start for when we do finally get to reopen. Follow @waterman_and_webb

INSPIRATIoN

Cherry on top Struggling with mental health his entire life, Anthony Cherry has worked his way up from the bottom of the barbering world. Now, he has built his career from the ground up and has his own shop to boot.

T

hroughout his barbering career, Anthony has struggled with depression, anxiety and panic attacks. However, that didn’t stop him from building a life as a talented barber and a family man. Anthony explains to us how his career came into fruition: “I fell into hairdressing, starting as an apprentice in a unisex salon earning just £80 a week. My struggles with mental health were layered on top of financial difficulty.” After spending some time in the salon, Anthony realised that his passion for barbering had the potential to take him so much higher. He quickly became restless after spending so much time in just one place, barely scraping enough money together to make ends meet. With a pregnant girlfriend and serious financial struggles, the next step in his career had to be a big one. Anthony had his sights on the big city: “With the added pressure of my pregnant girlfriend, I looked for new opportunities where the money was better. For some time I’d wanted to pursue a job in London. I spent a lot of time looking up well-known barbershops and Pall Mall Barbers soon became my dream job.” The ambition and passion for the craft pulled through. After taking a leap, Anthony had landed his dream job at

Pall Mall Barbers. Here, he learned the art of wet shaving, honed his skills and worked alongside some great barbers. However, all that glitters is not gold, Anthony explains: “Having only worked in unisex salons previously, I loved being in the barbershop atmosphere. But, despite living relatively close to London, both the time and expenses started to take its toll. I felt guilty about missing time with my young family.” Frustrated and disheartened that his dream job wasn’t what he had expected, Anthony left the job after less than a year. Anthony returned to kent for work and, after a couple of years, decided that it was time to make a drastic change. With less than £1,500 in savings, Anthony was feeling demoralized, but was able to find a premises that was

cheaper than renting his usual chair. using what little he had, he renovated it as best as he could, often working late into the night to turn his new-found dream into a reality. In September 2017, three months after the birth of his second daughter, Anthony opened his own shop: “Thankfully, it was a steady success! I employed my first member of staff in December 2017 and after some trial and error, added our second barber in early 2019.” As of July this year, Anthony has since moved to a bigger shop for his ever-expanding business. one thing that we can learn from his story is that you should never give up in the face of adversity. Aim high and work hard and you’ll see the results! Follow @_antcherry and @thenuthousebarbershop

STYLE coLLEcTIoN

The ‘tache is having a mo! Joe Mills, owner of The Lounge, Soho and Joe & Co Barbershop, brings us this moustache style collection for the upcoming Winter months.

F

acial hair is becoming increasingly popular again, with people growing lockdown beards, many for the first time as they work from home, and superstyling gives way to a more relaxed grooming regime. Now, seen on celebrities, catwalks and TV shows, the ‘tache is having its moment. There’s a whole variety to choose from – porn star to the silver screen, Edwardian dandy and 70s-retro. Joe said: “Growing a beard will be many men’s first foray into facial hair, but the moustache is the natural progression. Not everyone likes a face of bushy, coarse hair, but a moustache is the easier way to have facial hair. “There are various shapes to choose from and wearers can have fun with what they have. The great thing about the moustache is it suits everyone, doesn’t take long to grow and can really change someone’s face shape and

overall demeanour. “Movember brought moustaches back into vogue but now they are a key trend for this autumn/winter.” Joe looks at the three key moustache shapes for the upcoming cold months.

70s-style Harry Styles is a fan of this style of moustache, originally made famous by Tom Selleck. It takes on an anti-fashion stance and is perfect for those who can grow facial hair easily.

The Beardtache As sported by Henry cavill, this moustache/beard hybrid is a little bit more relaxed, including stubble contrasting with a fuller moustache. Ideal for those who want to be a bit bolder.

The Pencil Goatee The thin moustache with goatee combo is a grooming classic, as sported by the likes of Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx. To find out more about Joe Mills visit www.joemills.net www. theloungesoho.co.uk www. joeandco.net and follow @joemillshair @joeandcosoho @theloungesohohair
