I’m overwhelmed with joy that today, media and communication team of CIMSA UNPAD can finally released our very first edition of STAPES. After two months of a very hardwork from the team, I proudly present you the most detailed insight of CIMSA UNPAD. We named this magazine as STAPES, the idea was coming from my bestfriend Vindy (thank you so much, I love you!), because as we all know, STAPES is one of the auditory ossicles and it is also the smallest bone in our body. So, I hope this tiny little magazine will be as important as our auditory ossicle which helps us receiving informations, and we won’t miss even the tiniest detail of our information. In this edition, we have report from NLS 2014, SCO National Meetings, our latest project with ROTARY, and many other recent projects. Because May 6th was CIMSA’s birthday, we also put some wishes from our local for CIMSA in “13 years CIMSA: Serving the Nation”. Beside CIMSA’s birthday, May is the month of “World No Tobacco Day”, so we’re trying to once again raise the awareness about passive smoker. We brought this in an article and also the cover of our magazine, which more or less means that we don’t want to breath more smoke. After all, I only can say thaks a lot to my beloved MC team, external team, official team, contributors and everyone helping me to finally accomplished this magazine. And for all readers, hope you enjoy this. Happy reading!

Cimsa Presents Education about Human System
cimphysis
On March 22nd 2014, newbie CIMSA UNPAD 2014 held an event named CIMPHYSIS – CIMSA Presents Education about Human System. As we searched before that education in Indonesia is kind of low and being proved by the PISA test (Programme for International Student Assessment) in 2012 that Indonesia placed 64th of 65 countries in Math, reading and sciences. So we chose to concern about it and made this project. Our goal is to improve children’s knowleddge specifically in health science. We came to SMP PGRI 1 Jatinangor to improve the students’ interest in learning science, more specific in human system, as they are also going to learn about it in their High School. At first we planned to make several posts consist of Respiratory System, Digestive System, Circulatory System, Reproductive System, and Five Senses System and made three games for them enjoying the event. Each post has something to be explained to the student, how dangerous smoking for ourselves, the effect of ‘jajanan’ to our digestive system, things that improve the heart’s work, how important is personal hygiene, and what can gadget cause to our vision and using earphone to our hearing.
event was started at 10.30 a.m when there was only a little rain. Afraid that it was going to rain again, we moved the posts to the classroom. We chose the 7th grade as the participants, and they welcomed us well. We had so much fun with them. We did the Funky Chicken together and they were so happy. They were like endorphine to us that we got more spirit because of them. The event was ended at 1 p.m and we gave each student certificate. We took pictures together and the newbie of CIMSA UNPAD 2014 was more active with CIMSA!
On the day of our project, there was a little problem. We had to join faculty’s sport curriculum from 6.30 a.m until end, where our project was planned to start at 10 a.m. At 9 a.m several of us got permission to go to the school to hold the event, but only several of us. The weather was not really good, it was raining, but we planned to hold the event outside. And then our

PASSIVE SMOKING Punished for Something You Don’t Do
Imagine you were in a bank when a robbery took place. After a short time, the police came and arrested everyone in the room including you though all you did was standing near to the criminals, not knowing what to do. The cops had no choice but to arrest everyone since they couldn’t figure out who did the crime, so they put everyone, including the innocents, in jail. You did not do the crime, you did not do anything bad but you had no choice but to be arrested since you are near to the criminals. You may think this kind of thing would never happen to you, because—obviously—cops are not ignorant. They must have known a way to figure out who did the crime and who did not, and they must have known to sentence only those who deserve to be punished. What you may not think, however, is that a similar thing may happen to you in your life. In fact, it may be happening now. Most of us have been in a public place where someone suddenly takes out a pack of cigarettes and start smoking. You do not have a cigarette and you do not smoke but you have no choice but to breathe the same air as the smokers since you stand near to them,

the situation termed passive smoking. Passive smoking is defined as breathing in environmental tobacco smoke that is, the smoke exhaled by someone else or emitted by the tip of a burning cigarette. According to Australian Government Department of Health and Aging, environmental tobacco smoke includes the same toxic gases, chemicals and fine particles that smokers inhale directly with tobacco smoke. Passive smokers have higher chance of having heart attack, lung cancer and chest problems like asthma and bronchitis compared to those who are not exposed to environmental tobacco smoke. WHO stated that the risk of lung cancer in non smokers exposed to passive smoking is increased by between 20 and 30 percent, and the excess risk of heart disease is 23 percent—pretty impressive and frightening numbers. WHO also stated that non smokers exposed to passive smoking have higher risk of developing strokes and giving birth to low birthweighted and small for gestational aged babies. Children are at even higher risk as they are more vulnerable to dangers caused by passive smoking. According to Australian Government Department of Health and Aging, children of parents who smoke are likely to inhale about the same amount of nicotine as if they were actively smoking 60 to 150 cigarettes a year. They also tend to have more serious lung infections such as pneumonia; middle ear infections including ‘glue ear’ which is the most common cause of childhood deafness; reduced lung function, be shorter than average at all ages and suffer more asthma attacks.
Passive smoking is similar to the imaginary robbery case that you pictured in your mind just now. You are forced to be ‘punished’ with diseases like lung cancer for something you do not do, just like how you are forced to go to jail for crime you didn’t do. The police may have methods to identify the criminals and punish only those who deserve to be punished, but diseases don’t. Diseases don’t care whether you smoke actively or not, they will attack and ‘punish’ you though all you did was standing near smokers. Australian Health Government even stated that passive smokers may be in more danger since they breathe the particles that drift from burning cigarette tips. These particles have finer structure and more concentrated, meaning they can be inhaled deeper into the lungs and stay longer in the body of the passive smoker than in the person who is smoking. It only takes a simple method to protect you from the danger of passive smoking: simply ask smokers not to smoke in public places, especially when children and pregnant women are around. Ask them politely and explain why you do mind if they smoke near to you. It takes courage but it probably is the right thing to do, because it may be their rights to smoke but it is our right not to participate in breathing the toxics. Like what Roper Organization said in 1978, “What the smoker does to himself may be his business, but what the smoker does to the nonsmoker is quite a different matter.” So, would you gather up your courage and protect yourself, or would you be willing to get punished for something you don’t do?

thalassemia May Be on You
CIMSA UNPAD just finished holding an event in collaboration with the Rotary Club and Rotaract on May 4, 2014 in Car Free Day Dago, Bandung. With the slogan of “Thalassemia May Be on You, this event was held to mark the world Thalassemia Day which falls on May 8, and also to increase public awareness of thalassemia and invite the community to prevent Thalassemia with screening. Our first agenda was a long march. We began long march with a red balloon in front of the Hotel Palais Dago, down to the park, then up again, and ended up back at the Hotel Palais Dago. Some of us wore board with facts about Thalassemia. We also sing and chant slogans about Thalassemia screening during the long march that would attract the attention of many people around. After a long march, we march in front of the Hotel Palais Dago for a freeze mob. After freeze mob , we had a red balloon release and began to spread to some point in the CFD to provide peer education. We informed the community about Thalassemia and the need for screening before marriage. We also invite them to participate in selfie competition at our booth at the Hotel Palais Dago. 200 winners will receive a 20% discount voucher for Prodia screening in Bandung. In addition to providing discount vouchers, we also invite them to free screening at Britama Arena Sports Mall Kelapa Gading, Jakarta, on May 25, 2014. In addition to selfie photobooth, we also made a mosaic, blood-shaped, of our booth visitors testimonial. Visitors can also meet the patients with Thalassemia, from Sahabat Thalassemia, and share with them. Well, that was all we did on a sunny Sunday morning. Hopefully it will help raising the awareness of people about thalassemia and increase their will to do screening.

Happy Birthday, CIMSA! 15
It’s been 13 years since CIMSA was first established in 2001. It’s a great opportunity and also a pleasure to grow along with CIMSA, serving Indonesia.
“In my first year, I was introduce to many organization in my campus, and I pick CIMSA. Joining CIMSA makes me learn a lot about soft skill, and leads me to take a big opportunity I had never expected I would, becoming a LEO. Hopefully, you all will experience so much greater things and gain more with CIMSA, and be active with CIMSA!” - Fredric Zulkifly “It was all fun joining CIMSA. We can play with children, while doing a project that help them, and of course meeting new great people. Hopefully, CIMSA will be more solid, contributive and ACTIVE!” - Fatih Farabi “I’m out of words. It’s where I spend all of my student days, even until now, as an alumni and coaches. The place where I met my bestfriends from all arounf Indonesia. The place where all desires , as small and as stupid as it sounds couls be made real, it was so positive. CIMSA is 13 years now, I know how difficult it was first. But, I am grateful to witness CIMSA continues to grow, strengthen, and remain there. Hopefully CIMSA can continue inspiring all people, especially the members, so that he continues to beat and useful. Happy Birthday CIMSA!” - dr. Indah Amelia
