Rabbit Hash responds to big mews in Michigan Melissa Reinert Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

Another copycat is slinking in on Rabbit Hash’s paw-litical scene. Omena, a small unincorporated village in northwest Michigan, has elected its first feline mayor. Something furry has been going on with Omena’s elections for the last 10 years. It began when the Omena Historical Society decided to hold elections for village council. The catch? Candidates have to be animals who live in the village that boasts about 300 residents. Purr-ty good idea. It certainly was 11 years earlier in 1997 when Rabbit Hash first instituted the concept, according to Rabbit Hash Historical Society president Bobbi Kayser. “It all started here in Rabbit Hash,” Kayser said. “It’s interesting it became a trend but – I’m not speaking for the town, but myself personally and as a former executive secretary of a Rabbit Hash mayor (Lucy Lou) – I’m a bit resentful.” Kayser said the plan was to start “a tradition that Rabbit Hash could claim as its own.” “Now, we can’t. I’ve heard that in addition to the cat in Michigan, down South there is a donkey serving as mayor.” All’s well that ends well, Kayser supposes. Boone County’s colorful destination is still plenty full of uniqueness. Kayser points to the ever-popular barn dances and of course the renovated historic Rabbit Hash General Store. What began as an idea to support the preservation of one small town’s history, however, has caught on throughout the U.S. especially in Omena, where proceeds – $1 per vote – benefit the village’s historical society. That’s what it is really all about, according to cat mayor Sweet Tart’s owner and campaign manager Kanda McKee. “Small towns like Omena and Rabbit Hash – by whom our election was inspired – need to capture and preserve their histories,” she said. “People are interested in these histories and want to know more about our small towns.” Kanda and her husband, Harold McKee, know all about Rabbit Hash. They live in Fort Wright, which is about 30 minutes away from Northern Kentucky’s iconic oddity. The McKees and Sweet Tart spend half of the year in Fort Wright, the other half in Omena, where they first met Sweet Tart. “We heard a noise while on a trail,” Kanda said. “Harold said, ‘It’s a bird.’ I said, ‘No, it’s a cat.’ Three hours later we finally coaxed this tiny 6-week-old kitten out of a brush where she had just been dumped.” The kitten weighed less than a pound. Nine years later, this once abandoned feline weighs 15 pounds and is on her way to political fame. “It has been a whirlwind,” Kanda said. “We never expected this kind of reaction to a cat being elected to political office. She’s even been featured on Anderson Cooper. We’ve gotten messages from the UK and Canada. It’s been amazing.” Rabbit Hash’s furry rulings ... er

Lucy Lou gave many radio and magazine interviews and appeared on news segments to promote local events as well as a Japanese pet show. She attended charity events, served as spokespet for a women’s crisis center and shared a “Talking Points” walk with Bill Geist on CBS Sunday Morning. Lucy’s reign, which fully lived up to her campaign slogan: “The Bitch You Can Count On,” sadly ended in 2016 shortly after the General store succumbed to a fire. “Lucy decided that it was more imSee MAHYOR , Page 1A

UNION – Members of the public are disappointed by an announcement that the Union Pool is closing for good. The decision to shut down the 46year-old pool was made by Boone County Fiscal Court, based on the cost of bringing the pool up to standards, coupled with low attendance. The last day to swim in the pool, located at 10165 Old Union Road, is Labor Day, Sept. 3. However, the following Saturday, Sept. 8, the public is invited to bring their pups for a final dip. The pool is owned and operated by Boone County. According to Parks and Recreation Director David Whitehouse, operations have just become too costly. “The pool was built in 1972, almost 50 years ago and it’s showing its age,” he said. “The building that accompanies the pool is an old cinder block building and in need of a lot of work. Ideally, we would just knock it down and start over.” However, Whitehouse said the pools, which are subsidized, don’t bring in a lot of money. The pool is only open about 100 days a year, and attendance is often hurt by weather. He said competing with Silverlake, YMCA and Florence Aquatic Center have also proved difficult. Although the pool has a capacity of 150, on Aug. 1 there were only nine paid admissions; Aug. 2 had 19, Aug. 3 had 65, and Aug. 4, 120. “To bring up the Union Pool to new standards and add in splash pads would cost about $2.5 million,” he said. “This budget planning year, the Fiscal Court decided that it was time to make some tough decisions. It just didn’t make sense financially to keep Union Pool open.” According to Whitehouse, several public hearings were held regarding the fiscal year budget and the possibility of closing the pool. “Sadly, no one showed up to these meetings,” he said. As the announcement was posted on the Union Pool Facebook page today, however, several residents reSee POOL, Page 1A

YOUR HEALTH with Dr. Owens

St. Elizabeth breaks ground on $130 million cancer center Melissa Reinert Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

EDGEWOOD – St. Elizabeth Healthcare broke ground Thursday on a $130 million hospital that will dedicate nearly a quarter-million square feet to fighting cancer. The Northern Kentucky facility is the second new cancer hospital under construction in the region. TriHealth also is building a special facility to treat cancer. The St. Elizabeth cancer hospital, to be five stories tall, is scheduled to open

Good sleep habits help kids thrive An alarm clock blares. A parent or caregiver tries to wake a sleeping child, only to be met with a groan. That scenario is playing out all over our region this month as kids head back to school.

O’dell M. Owens, MD, MPH President & CEO

Establishing good sleep habits for our kids is important for maintaining good health. Children who haven’t slept enough can be hyper or disagreeable. Lack of sleep can also affect school performance. Kids who don’t sleep enough may struggle to pay attention and have difficulty remembering things. The 2017 Child Well-Being Survey, conducted by Interact for Health in partnership with Cincinnati Children’s and with support from United Way of Greater Cincinnati, found that about 6 in 10 kids in our region get the recommended amount of sleep for their age.

portant that the historical society raise the funds needed to restore this iconic landmark,” Kayser said. Lucy’s plan worked. The store was restored and opened a year later. In Michigan, Sweet Tart, who helped raise a total of $7,000 for the Omena Historical Society, is not only the village’s first feline mayor but also the only the second known cat mayor to be elected in the U.S. The first was a ginger tabby patterned feline dubbed Stubbs from Talkeetna, Alaska, a population of 900. She welcomes any advice from any experienced K-9 politicians, especially those from Rabbit Hash. Former mayor Lucy Lou offered this thought to chew on: “Don’t accept the kibble, you’ll gain weight.” Kanda said Sweet Tart will take heed. She’s a picky eater anyway.

In-season peaches get French makeover Rita’s freezer pesto

Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld

This thicker pesto freezes well. Don’t like pine nuts? Leave them out or sub almonds. Add more oil after thawing, if you like. Add a little water when using it to coat pasta.

Another “gift without ribbons” arrived at my kitchen door via my friends, Bert and Bob Villing, who live down the road in a historic 1800s farmhouse. They brought me half a bushel of juicy, ripe, peaches. Yep, peaches are in season now. Well, what’s a girl to do except make peach jam, peach and blackberry cobbler (yes, blackberries are ripe now) and a pretty, sort of fancy, but easy dessert called peach claufouti. I’m sharing that recipe along with my freezer pesto recipe. If you could see my herb garden and count the number of varieties of basil, you’d need more than 10 fingers. I love them all, but when it comes to making pesto, I use the sweet, common basil or its cousin, Genovese.

Update: Cherry bounce “I accidentally left the stems on. Is that OK?” Sure, they may fall off into the bourbon, but no big deal. Remove before eating. “How much sugar is in 6 sticks rock candy?” Gosh, that depends on the length. After the sugar dissolves, taste and add more if you like. You can add more sugar at any time during the process. Rita Nader Heikenfeld is an herbalist, educator and author. Find her blog online at Abouteating.com. Email her at rita@com munitypress.com with “Rita’s kitchen” in the subject line.

Ingredients 1-2 teaspoons minced garlic or to taste ⁄4 cup pine nuts, toasted if desired

4 oz. butter Generous handful parsley leaves 4 cups basil leaves, packed 11⁄4 cups Parmesan cheese ⁄4 cup Romano cheese

Peaches are sliced and layered, then covered in custard and baked for peach claufouti, a French confection. RITA HEIKENFELD FOR THE COMMUNITY PRESS

Peach claufouti with almonds A claufouti is a French type baked fruit & custard dessert. I had a memorable version in France last year. You can use frozen peaches, slightly thawed. Ingredients 1-1/4 cups sugar, divided into 1/4 and 1 cup 8-10 peeled peaches, cut into halves or slices (enough to fill 9x13 pan) Custard 1/4 cup flour 2 cups half & half 3 large eggs, slightly beaten 2 teaspoons vanilla 1/4 cup toasted slivered or sliced almonds (opt) Instructions

Preheat oven to 350. Spray 9x13 pan or equivalent casserole. Sprinkle 1/4 cup sugar on bottom of pan. Lay peach halves, cut side down, or slices, slightly overlapping in bottom of pan in single layer. Whisk flour and 1/4 cup half & half. Then whisk in remaining half & half, eggs, vanilla and 1 cup sugar. Pour over fruit. Bake 45-60 minutes, until toothpick inserted in center comes out almost clean. Sprinkle with almonds. Great warm, room temperature or cold. Gets juicier as it sits. To peel peaches: Cut an “x” in the bottom. Not too deep! Plunge into boiling water for a minute or so to loosen skin. Want to can peaches? Check out www.thinktv.org. Type my name in “Our Ohio” section for my shows on canning.

513-306-4995 Carpets & Floors

⁄4 cup extra virgin olive oil

3

Generous squeeze of lemon juice Salt to taste Instructions With processor’s motor running, add garlic and nuts. Add everything else and pulse until mixed to your liking, then pour into containers and freeze. Note: I add nuts and garlic prior to freezing, but some folks leave them out since, in their opinion, these turn strong in the freezer. They add them to thawed pesto. Tip: Freeze flat Pour pesto into freezer bags. Lay flat, carefully smooth to distribute pesto evenly. Seal, Stack in freezer. To use, open bag and cut off what you need. Pesto turning dark? Pouring a thin film of oil over top before storing may keep air out and that’s the culprit. But no worries. Either way, it’s still fine.

Viewpoints Sen. John Schickel’s legislative update John Schickel Guest Columnist Community Recorder

When I moved to Boone County many years ago (1977), I had heard of Sgt. Charles ‘Chalkie’ Fleek being killed in Vietnam and receiving the Medal of Honor. I’m ashamed to admit that not since I sponsored the legislation to designate Kentucky Route 20 the “Sgt. Charles Fleek Memorial Highway” through Sgt. Fleek’s hometown of Petersburg, KY, did I realize how significant it was. Charles Fleek is the only person from Boone County to ever receive the nation’s highest military honor, the Congressional Medal of Honor. The story of his gallant action is quite amazing. On May 27, 1969, he was leading a squad of twelve men in Vien Dong, Vietnam, when his group engaged the enemy in a fierce firefight. A grenade was thrown by the enemy into a group of men, which they did not see. Fleek, aware many people would be killed, threw himself on the grenade. Accompanying the medal is a statement acknowledging that this heroic action saved the lives of eight of his comrades. Charles “Chalkie”’ Fleek, like so

many others killed in Vietnam, came from a very humble family. The last several weeks I have researched his family with the help of the Boone County Public Library, as well as people who knew him firsthand in Petersburg. Like so many young men of that time, he left school after his freshman year of high school to help support the family. Looking at the picture in his freshman yearbook at Boone County High, his appearance comes across as that of a young boy. He took the ferry to Lawrenceburg, Indiana, just across the river each day for work at the Seagram’s Distillery, at a time long before the 275 bridge was constructed. His father worked as an upholsterer for a casket company and took the same ferry to his job. His mother was a cook in Florence at the Burns Brothers truck stop. When Charles received word that he was going to be drafted, he joined the U.S. Army. Rachel Dottinger, a retired school teacher and neighbor to the family, recalled in newspaper reports many years ago how polite Chalkie was and how he said goodbye to all the elderly members of the community before he left, stating that he might not make it back. Letters to his older brother conveyed how much he missed home and prayed the war would

be over soon. Approximately nine months later, he was killed. For months his family was unable to learn how he was killed; eventually they received word of his gallant action. His mother and father, two brothers, and a sister only five years of age, all traveled to D.C. to receive the medal from President Richard Nixon. The town of Petersburg is like a time capsule in Boone County, a small village on the Ohio River far from the hustle and bustle of the larger areas. It’s amazing to me how many people from Boone County have never been to Petersburg. If this is you, I encourage you to visit. Yesterday Chris Courtney, an assistant to the Boone County Fiscal Court, and myself took a walk around the town with the longtime Fire Chief Bill Birkle. Chief Birkle knew Chalkie personally, because he grew up right across the street from him. Sgt. Fleek was a volunteer with the fire department. We saw the house in which Chalkie grew up and visited an old Bellview couple, the Hitchfield’s, who knew him personally as well. Later we visited the peaceful and beautiful Petersburg Cemetery, nestled in corn fields, and met with a grave digger named Rodney Campbell who was donning a ball cap that read “Grave Digger”. He proudly informed us

that his nickname is “Pickle”, and that he still digs graves by hand in about 90 minutes. He took us to Chalkie’s simple grave with a simple headstone. His parents and brother are buried nearby. On Friday, Aug. 17, we will gather at 9 a.m. at the Petersburg Community Center to once again honor this fallen hero. Three signs will be unveiled. Two signs will designate Kentucky Route 20 through Petersburg as the Sgt. Charles Fleek Memorial Highway. The third sign will be displayed outside the community center, informing visitors that this is the hometown of Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Charles ‘Chalkie’ Fleek. Children from Charles H. Kelly Elementary School, in nearby Belleview, will be in attendance to sing “God Bless America”. We will then travel a short distance to his gravesite at the Petersburg Cemetery where Boone County resident Gary Griesser will offer prayer, a wreath will be laid at the grave by family members, an American Legion color guard will perform a 21-gun salute, and “Taps” will be played by Kenton County Sherriff Chuck Korzenborn. This event is open to the public, and I would encourage everyone who is able to attend this remembrance. Senator John Schickel (R-Union) represents the 11th District in Boone County.

Socializing is important for your health Diane Mason Extension Notes Community Recorder

Just as we need food and water to survive, we also need meaningful social relationships and connections. While it is okay to feel lonely and to be alone at times, chronic loneliness can cause serious health concerns. Researchers continue to demonstrate how important meaningful relationships with others are to our mental, emotional and physical health. Loneliness, if not addressed, can lead to social isolation, physical and mental decline and depression. Recent studies have shown that social isolation can also lead to a number of negative health effects, including poor sleeping patterns, a disrupted immune system, poor nutrition, destruction of

arteries and high blood pressure. When the need for socialization is not met, it can also negatively affect learning, memory and motivation. Loneliness can occur at any age and can be a normal feeling - especially after a break-up, a move to a new location or loss of a loved one. But chronic loneliness-feeling lonely, isolated or not to close to people for an extended period of time, can bring about discomfort and distress, including feeling sad, empty, isolated, distanced from others, deprived and filled with longing. Children and teens, for example, are more likely to adopt an outcast status, have problems in or drop out of school or even become delinquent. Lonely adults are at greater risk of alcoholism and depression. Those living alone are at greater risk of suicide. Loneliness is particularly prevalent among older adults. As we age, our so-

cial circle shrinks, which makes it more difficult to have meaningful interactions with others. If you are experiencing loneliness, you are not alone, and you don’t have to be. There are many ways to increase your social interactions. Find a cause to be passionate about and donate your time. Chances are there are many community organizations in your area in need of volunteers. Not only will you get to interact with others, but you will also get satisfaction from giving back. Don’t miss opportunities to interact with your family. Attend family events, such as reunions and weddings. If you have grandkids who live close, consider attending one of their extracurricular activities, such as a ballgame or a dance recital. Take up a hobby. Find something you are passionate about or learn more

about something you already enjoy. The Cooperative Extension Service offers many opportunities for social interaction including Extension Homemaker clubs, Master Gardener programs, Master Cattleman, 4-H volunteer opportunities and all kinds of classes on various subjects. Work to get out and get involved. Educational programs of the Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of economic or social status and will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, ethnic origin, national origin, creed, religion, political belief, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expressions, pregnancy, marital status, genetic information, age, veteran status, or physical or mental disability. Sports UC golfer Austin Squires set for U.S. Amateur tournament Tom Groeschen Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

For the second consecutive year, University of Cincinnati junior Austin Squires (Union, Ky./Ryle High School) will participate in the U.S. Amateur golf tournament. The 2018 U.S. Amateur runs Monday through Sunday (Aug. 13-19) at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf

Course, both in Pebble Beach, California. Squires claimed the second of two qualifying cards last month at Coldstream Country Club, carding a 5-under 64-73=137 to finish second in the 77player field behind Isaiah Salinda, who posted a 9-under 67-66=133. Nationally, 61 players are fully exempt into the championship and the remaining places in the 312-player field

were filled through qualifying at 100 sites across the country and in Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Last summer, Squires claimed one of three qualifying positions for the U.S. Amateur at Coldstream, tying Bearcats teammate Davis Baxter with identical 4-under par 67-71=138 scores. Squires did not advance past the stroke-play portion of the U.S. Amateur last year.

What are the top games to watch in NKY football this year? James Weber Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

Football in Northern Kentucky is right around the corner. There are plenty of great games on tap for the fall season, but here are my best guesses for the best of the best. Never forget that one of the best parts of a football season are the surprises that come along the way, and there should be plenty of those as well. Week 0 (Aug. 17-18): Covington Catholic at Ryle. Two teams coming off of banner seasons in their traditional season opener. They combined for a 23-3 record last year, with Covington Catholic winning the 5A state championship. Last year, CovCath rebounded from a quick Ryle touchdown to win 4917 and start its championship run. Both teams have holes to fill from last year. CovCath will be debuting a new quarterback and talented veterans such as Casey McGinness, Jack Coldiron and Notre Dame commit Michael Mayer will be a year older and wiser. Ryle will have a new-look offense behind RB Kyle England and QB Jake Smith as it takes aim at another 6A district title. Others: Lloyd vs. East Jessamine and Walton-Verona vs. West Jessamine at West Jessamine, Campbell County at Dixie Heights, Cooper at Highlands, Scott at Newport Central Catholic. Week 1 (Aug. 24-25): Highlands at Campbell County. The Bluebirds and Camels have had entertaining battles the last two years, including 2017, when Highlands rallied to win in overtime. Both teams will be looking to gain respect in the early season with young quarterbacks gaining experience. Others - Lloyd at Beechwood, Conner at Boone County, NCC at Cooper, Bellevue at Dayton, Dixie Heights at Scott, CovCath vs. Henry Clay and Ryle vs. Lexington Catholic at LexCath. Week 2 (Aug. 31-Sept. 1): Bellevue at Bishop Brossart. The 1A rivals had an entertaining game in 2017 on their way to successful seasons, with Bellevue pulling out a 26-17 win. Others - Ryle at Boone County, Conner at Simon Kenton. Week 3 (Sept. 7-8): Scott at Conner. Two successful programs that always have playmakers engaged in a 47-27 shootout last year won by the Cougars. Others - Highlands at Ryle, Cooper at Campbell County, Kings at CovCath, Simon Kenton at Dixie Heights. Week 4 (Sept. 14-15): Beechwood at CovCath. Two of last year’s state champions meet up once again as the Tigers go a few miles up Dixie Highway to face the Colonels. CovCath rolled through

the Tigers 45-9 last year on its way to going to a running clock against all 12 of its Kentucky opponents. Others - Ryle at Campbell County, NewCath at Christian Academy-Louisville, Dixie Heights at Conner. Week 5 (Sept. 21-22): Simon Kenton at Highlands. The last time these teams played in Fort Thomas, the Bluebirds scored 53 points against the Pioneers, but SK won by 24 points, with the final score a basketball-esque 77-53. Last year was a bit of a shootout as well, with SK rallying with late touchdowns to win 35-30. Others - NewCath at Conner, Owen County at Walton-Verona, Mason County at Scott, Bishop Brossart at Nicholas County. Week 6 (Sept. 28-29): Holy Cross at Holmes. The longtime Covington city rivals play their second game on the new See GAMES, Page 2B

turf at Holmes High School. The Bulldogs won 49-0 last year. Others - Ludlow at Brossart, Cooper at Dixie, Beechwood at Simon Kenton. Week 7 (Oct. 4-6): Cooper at Ryle. The battle of Union could be closer this year. Ryle won 34-14 last season, dropping Cooper to 0-7 for the year. But Cooper found its footing late in the year and has plenty of returning experience coming into this season. Others - Highlands at Dixie Heights (Thursday). Week 8 (Oct. 12-13): CovCath at Highlands – In a week filled with heated district clashes, the Bluebirds will try to avenge two straight lopsided defeats to the Colonels and regain the upper hand in this historic rivalry. Others - Dayton at Bellevue. Ryle at Conner, Simon Kenton at Campbell County, Boone at Cooper, NewCath at Lloyd. Week 9 (Oct. 19-20): Simon Kenton at Ryle. One of the top rivalries in all of Kentucky 6A, the two foes will clash again, potentially as district champions. Last year, Jake Chsholm’s 449 yards led the Raiders to a 56-38 win. Two years ago, Both teams came in undefeated and Ryle won 32-25. Others - Conner at Cooper, Ludlow at Bellevue, Dixie at CovCath. Week 10 (Oct. 26-27): Scott at Lloyd. These teams had the best game of the final week last year, with Scott edging the Juggernauts 23-22. Both teams look to continue their recent success and make a long playoff run. Others - Campbell at CovCath, Beechwood at NewCath.

Walton-Verona football players in practice on August 1. JAMES WEBER/ENQUIRER

How does Trimble Co. exit affect football? James Weber Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

Some Northern Kentucky football programs are suddenly scrambling to find a 10th opponent for the 2018 season. Trimble County High School announced that it would not field a varsity football program, citing low roster numbers. The program had announced the move Aug. 1, then backtracked two days later before making its decision final. Trimble, l in Bedford, Kentucky, about 70 miles from downtown Cincinnati off Interstate 71 and near Madison, Indiana, was set to host Dayton Sept. 14 and travel to Walton-Verona Oct. 5. Trimble County, a KHSAA Class 2A program, is part of District 5 with Walton-Verona and Gallatin County plus Carroll County and Owen County. Trimble went 1-9 last season, losing 17-0 to Dayton and 56-0 to W-V. Trimble scored eight points in its nine losses. The Raiders posted a 7-5 record in 2007 but have suffered 10 straight losing seasons since then, compiling a 15-86 record in that time. Walton could play one of Trimble’s other opponents who already had bye weeks Oct. 5: Eminence in

Shelby County and Bethlehem in Bardstown. Dayton could schedule Switzerland County (Ind.), who was set to play Trimble Aug. 31 during Dayton’s regular bye week. The KHSAA regular season is 11 weeks long from Aug. 17 through Oct. 26, allowing each program a bye week for scheduling flexibility. Trimble County announced the suspension of the program after just nine players showed up to practice but decided to give the decision more time after a meeting of students. “We set up an 8 a.m. practice (Monday) morning,” Trimble County superintendent Steve Miracle told the Courier-Journal. “We had 23 committed to practice on Friday, and 20 showed up to practice. Three of those are seniors who have made arrangements to transfer … and five have never played football in their life. Now you’re down to 12, and five of those are either freshmen or sophomores. So you’re down to seven true varsity players, and for the safety of those players you can’t put them out on the field with other players who aren’t experienced.” Miracle said he wanted to make the decision now so that other schools would have a chance to find new opponents.

Downtown Burlington buildings demolished to make way for community green space. PROVIDED/JULIA PILE, STINGER MEDIA LLC

Longtime home to insurance agency demolished to make way for green space Downtown Burlington, Kentucky looks different this weekend. The buildings which has housed Farm Bureau Insurance on the south side of Route 18 since at least 1951 was demolished in June. The space will be converted to a military memorial, green space, parking and create an area for the community to gather for events. Mike Crane started his career at Farm Bureau Insurance in 1975 as an agent, after Agency Manager Bill Maddox hired him while collecting tickets at the front gate of the Boone County Fair. Bill passed away in 1979 from cancer and Mike was named Agency Manager. “We believe the building was built around the turn of the century and at various points was a store, tannery or small boarding house,” stated Mike Crane. As the agency grew, they eventually purchased the 1 1/2 story Weaver House which was next door. It was rumored the Weaver House was haunted and had previous lives of a needlework shop and barbershop. One of Mike’s fondest memories of the Weaver House was “watching his young daughter sliding down the stairs because they were wide and long which

was very unusual in those days.” In 2017, Mike Crane’s KY Farm Bureau Insurance Agency moved east on 18 to what is known as the McBee House so the buildings in downtown Burlington could be demolished. Boone County Farm Bureau, Inc. purchased the McBee House from the Fiscal Court and Mike continues as their tenant in the new location at 2342 Burlington Pike, next door to the YMCA. Mike Crane’s KY Farm Bureau Insurance Agency serves Boone County and particularly the northern and western areas of Boone County, Kentucky including the towns of Burlington, Hebron, Petersburg and surrounding areas. Kentucky Farm Bureau insurance provides protection for You and Your Family with - Products Designed for Kentuckians including auto, home mobile home, farm, boat, business, commercial, dwelling, fire, renters, and churches, with Life and Flood through Southern Farm Bureau Life. Doug Flora to lead St. Elizabeth Cancer Center Melissa Reinert Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

EDGEWOOD - A “champion” in the field of cancer treatment, Dr. Doug Flora was named executive medical director of St. Elizabeth Oncology Services Thursday during a groundbreaking of the new cancer center. “Dr. Flora has extensive experience as a leader in oncology services,” said Kathy Jennings, senior vice president of oncology services. “We are thrilled to have this chamDr. Doug pion at the helm of the Flora cancer center, which will change the way cancer care is delivered in our region.” The $130 million hospital will dedicate nearly a quarter-million square feet to fighting cancer. The Northern Kentucky facility is the second new cancer hospital under construction in the region. TriHealth also is building a special facility to treat cancer. The St. Elizabeth cancer hospital, to be five stories tall, is scheduled to open in 2020. “The center is going to be a game changer,” Flora said. “Cancer is a scourge on our population and now we’ll be able to counter it more aggressively. We’re going to have access to the latest technology, trials and treatments so that we can serve our community more intelligently.”

The center will expand on St. Elizabeth’s efforts in prevention, genetic screening, precision medicine, clinical research and treatment options. Flora previously has served as the interim executive medical director of oncology services since September 2017. “It’s gratifying that I’ll be able to see through the plans that we have been making for our region. It’s a great chance, a chance to share my vision of what we can do as a regional center,” Flora said. Flora has been a medical oncologist and hematologist with St. Elizabeth since 2016. His other roles within St. Elizabeth have included president of medical staff, physician champion in precision medicine and Mayo e-Consults and chairman of medicine. He is a member of the board of trustees at St. Elizabeth and a member of the boards of directors with Cancer Family Care and the Andy and Jordan Dalton Foundation, Cincinnati. Flora received his doctor of medicine from Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health. He completed his internship, residency and fellowship in internal medicine at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. The event will use electronic bidding for the silent auction again this year. You can sign up at www.Cassba2018.gesture.com. You can start bidding now, during CaSSba, and from anywhere the day

of the event. It’s both easy and fun. “This year we continue with our famous raffle called CaSSba Cash,” says Katie Raverty-Evans, board member and cochair of the event along with Connie Noll. “The excitement mounts as everyone watches the pot grow knowing the winner takes home 30 percent of the total ticket sales. The total take home amount for the winners last year was over $11,000. However, the real excitement for us is the commitment of our donors to assist us in improving the lives of the more than 10,000 people we serve each year here in the Diocese of Covington.” Catholic Charities Event Coordinator Vicky Bauerle, said “This event is just one way for the community to get involved in supporting the agency’s mission to Extend a Hand and Change a Life” She added: “I would especially like to thank Joe Danneman, Sports Director of Fox 19, who will act as our Master of Ceremonies again this year.” If you would like more information about the event call Vicky Bauerle at 859581-8974 ext. 116 or visit www.covingtoncharities.org Katie Raverty-Evans, Catholic Charities

USO Tribute Cincinnati honors military caregivers Laura A. Hobson

Special to Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

“The USO allowed me to call home and talk with my wife, our daughter and our newborn baby son,” said retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Phil Tilly, who served during Desert Shield and Desert Storm with First Calvary Division. “Our son, now a grown man who previously served with the 10th Mountain Division, called home from Jalabad, Afghanistan, through a USO phone bank to talk with his mother and me,” added Tilly, of Loveland. On Labor Day weekend, the USO in Cincinnati will provide a chance to watch the annual fireworks as well as honor health providers who care for our nation's wounded soldiers. The 15th annual USO Tribute Cincinnati takes place beginning at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2, at The Montgomery Inn Boathouse. The event will honor staff members from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, who have rehabilitated wounded soldiers from combat operations overseas. Honorees include: ❚ Annemarie E. Orr, occupational therapist in Amputee Service at Walter Reed. ❚ Laura Friedman, physical therapist for the Department of Defense Osseointegration Program at Walter Reed. ❚ Peter P. Anderson, prosthetist certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics Inc. at Walter Reed. ❚ Robert Bahr, physical therapist, retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel at Walter Reed. He served in the Army from February 1979 to September 2013. ❚ Steve Springer, nursing coordinator for Amputee Service at Walter Reed, retired from the U.S. Army. His awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Expert Field Medical Badge and the Ranger Badge.

At Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump on April 22, 2017, met Sergeant First Class Alvaro Barrientos with his wife, Tammy Barrientos, after awarding him the Purple Heart. SHAWN THEW, EPA

These health care professionals and others have helped many soldiers get back on track. The average stay at Walter Reed is 30 months. As a result, these health care workers see patients every day. Although progress can be slow, patience and persistence pay off. In the past 14 years, USO Tribute Cin-

cinnati has raised more than $7 million for USO-Metro where Walter Reed is located. These funds have assisted in providing critical services to wounded, ill and injured service members, their families and their caregivers from across the nation. Cincinnati's event also funds a portion

of operating costs for the two largest USO Centers in the world: The USO Warrior and Family Center at Bethesda, Maryland, and the USO Warrior and Family Center at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Cincinnatians have made USO Tribute Cincinnati the largest fundraiser to benefit Walter Reed outside the DC-Metro area. Honorary chair is U.S. Rep. Brad Wenstrup, a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. Wenstrup was elected in 2012 to represent Ohio’s Second Congressional District. A doctor of podiatric medicine, he is a USO Tribute former honoree. During his time in Congress, Wenstrup fulfills his reserve duties by treating patients at Walter Reed. In 2005-06, he served a tour in Iraq as a combat surgeon and later was awarded a Bronze Star Medal and Combat Action Badge. For over 77 years, the USO has been the nation’s leading organization to serve the men and women in the U.S. military, and their families, throughout their time in uniform. Here in the Tristate, the USO runs two welcome centers at Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky International Airport. The Sept. 2 event begins with a cocktail reception at 4 p.m. and program at 5:30 p.m. honoring guests with host Anthony Munoz. Dinner follows at 7:30 p.m. Military leaders will speak, and the USO Show Troupe will give a performance. WEBN/Western Southern Fireworks finish the evening. Sponsorship of USO Tribute Cincinnati ranges from presenting sponsor at $100,000 to patriotic sponsor at $2,800. Patron tickets are available at $280. To make reservations, contact Duane Hickerson at 513-351-4256, ext. 14; 614378-9625 (cell); or duane.hickerson@halo.com. To learn more, visit www.USOTributeCincinnati.com. “Wherever our military is, whether in the desert, jungle or the mountains, the USO ensures we have that linkage to home, that support and that encouragement,” said Tilly.
