Five new hotels part of Florence construction boom Melissa Reinert Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
FLORENCE – If you build it ... yeah, you know the rest. So do hotel owners. That’s the reason for a recent hotel boom in Florence, according to the city’s director of business and community development, Josh Hunt. According to Hunt, visitors to the Creation Museum in Boone County and Ark Encounter in neighboring Grant County are a contributing factor for hotels opening. Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky International Airport’s (CVG) addition of more low-cost airline flights, in particular, is driving a need for more hotel rooms. “When you combine that with Florence’s proximity to a variety of shopping and dining options, it makes Florence the place to build in Northern Kentucky,” Hunt said. This year Florence welcomed two new hotels to its roster, Comfort Suites with 82 rooms at 5895 Merchant Drive and Hilton Home 2 Suites with 109
Rooms at 7570 Woodspoint Drive. In addition, there are five hotels currently under construction within city limits: ❚ Stay Bridge Inn, is a 2.8-acre development site at 3255 Ted Bushelman Boulevard. It is expected to be completed in spring 2019. The building will stand at five stories and consist of 89 rooms in 72,965 square feet. ❚ Fairfield Inn & Suites will stand at Merchant Street, at four-stories and 50,635 square feet. This hotel is anticipated to be complete in spring 2019 and will feature 91 rooms. ❚ Tru Hotel will be a four-story, 45,000-square-foot hotel at Vandercar Way. ❚ Holiday Inn Express is being built on 2.1 acres at Vandercar Way. This 56,000-square-foot hotel will feature 93 rooms in a total of four stories. ❚ TownePlace Suites Marriott will soon stand at Turfway Road. This 2.85acre development will consist of four stories and 65,716 square feet. There will be101 rooms. “When all of the projects are finished

up, we will have added 667 new hotel rooms within the city,” Hunt said. In addition, several hotels already operating in the city have completed or are undergoing multimillion-dollar renovations: ❚ Major interior and exterior upgrades to Hampton Inn, 7393 Turfway Road. and Courtyard by Marriot 46 Cavalier Boulevard. ❚ Major interior upgrade to Hilton Cincinnati Airport, 7373 Turfway Road. According to meetNKY director of bureau operations Mary Watkins, hotel room occupancy in Northern Kentucky has been steadily increasing over the past few years. Watkins said that Covington and Florence take the lead in hotel occupancy. Covington has 1,463 rooms; Florence currently 2,674 rooms. As Hunt noted above, that tally will be growing for Florence.
More business boom in Florence Discount store Five Below opened Sept. 14 in Florence. SUBMITTED/ THE TENNESSEAN
Besides the addition of several hotels in Florence, there are a plethora of busi-
ness projects coming to fruition this fall. ❚ A new popular trend in pampering will be available in Florence at 7665 Mall Road. Becoming Mom Sap & Ultrasound is a new spa that will specialize in providing therapeutic spa services and ultrasounds for expectant mothers. ❚ Zoup!, a fast-casual soup restaurant concept, will soon be offering up award-winning soups and made-to-order sandwiches and salads in Florence at 7753 Mall Road. Five Below, where everything is $5 and under, opened in Florence on Sept. 14. The store is located at 7800 Mall Road. ❚ New to the market is Noah’s Ark Animal Clinic, a chain that will open this fall. It will operate out of a newly remodeled 5,775-square-foot building at 7025 Burlington Pike. ❚ CVG Site 6B, a 21-acre development, is expected to complete its first 117,000-square-foot building this fall. Two of the three tenants will occupy this building. ❚ Wayfair, the online home furnishings and decor retailer, will be opening a retail outlet there this year. The address is 5101 Renegade Way.
Former Rabbit Hash dog mayor dies Melissa Reinert Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
RABBIT HASH, Ky. – Former Rabbit Hash Mayor Lucy Lou has died. The red and white border collie who served in office from 2008 to 2016 died Sept. 10. She was 12. Lucy Lou lived her entire life in Rabbit Hash, an Ohio River community that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. She dedicated her time in “the center of the universe” to help others. Since her political career took off Lucy Lou attended many charity events and served as spokespet for a women’s crisis center. Her term as mayor ended earlier than planned in 2016 when she voluntarily left office in order to help her hometown raise funds to rebuild the Rabbit Hash General Store. The 1831 historic building was destroyed by fire in February 2016. With the help of Lucy Lou and others,

the Rabbit Hash Historical Society was able to rebuild and reopen the landmark within a year. During her tenure, Lucy Lou also gave many radio and magazine interviews. She appeared on news segments to promote local events as well as a Japanese pet show and shared a “Talking Points” walk with Bill Geist of CBS Sunday Morning.

Celebrity aside, Lucy Lou’s favorite thing was to greet visitors to Rabbit Hash, located in western Boone County in Northern Kentucky. She also enjoyed swimming in the Ohio River. Lucy Lou’s secretary and “momma” Bobbi Layne Kayser said that Lucy Lou “was an astounding canine who brought joy to many more people than just her immediate family.” “I’m so proud to have known her and shared these short years on earth with her,” Kayser posted in a Facebook announcement yesterday. “Run free and easy, sweet girl. Momma loves you.” Lucy Lou was the first female mayor of Rabbit Hash. Lucy Lou ran on the popular campaign slogan: “The Bitch You Can Count On,” raising $8,087 of the total $21,921 raised that election. The question Mayor Lucy Lou was most asked during the campaign was: “How does a DOG become mayor”? Her answer, according to Kayser was: “As with politics in every corner of the

Musician Ricky Nye, one of many who have performed at the Rabbit Hash General Store, posted a message, as did the director of the movie about Rabbit Hash, “Rabbit Hash: Center of the Universe”: “She was a star! David Dooley faces new child porn charges
Here Union grows again: NKY development Chris Mayhew Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
UNION – Land for a not-yet-built Drees subdivision off Frogtown Road behind St. Timothy Catholic Church has been annexed into city limits. The fast-growing Boone County city of Union annexed the 87-acre Traemore development, according to a city news release. A site plan submitted to Boone County’s planning commission in February lists Traemore as having 172 lots to sell. Traemore will be built on the north side of Frogtown Road west of St. Timothy. The new subdivision will be across from the Drees existing Cool Springs development at Galileo Boulevard. Traemore will be similar to Drees’
nearby Triple Crown subdivision developments of Jockey Club, Equestrian and Winners Circle. Mayor Larry Solomon said the city was pleased to add Traemore’s future residents to the city. The U.S. Census Bureau’s July 2017 population estimate for Union was 5,895 residents. The city’s population in the 2000 census was 2,895 people. Florence is the largest incorporated city in Boone County with more than 32,000 residents. Frogtown Road is north of the Interstate 71/75 Richwood exits. The Richwood and Mount Zion I-75 interchanges will be rebuilt as part of a federal program to ease traffic problems in the area. The project was announced in June with federal funding from an INFRA, or Infrastructure for Rebuilding America, grant for $67 million.

Awaiting a new trial for murder, David Dooley was charged with child pornography offenses late last month. Dooley allegedly possessed or viewed material portraying a sexual performance by a minor and used a minor under 16 in a sex performance, according to Boone County court records. Dooley made a motion to seal the file, which a judge denied. The alleged murder case has grabbed the nation’s attention, sending NBC television show “Dateline” back to the region twice to profile the case. Police arrested Dooley in 2012 after Michelle Mockbee, a young mother of two, was found bludgeoned to death outside her office at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Florence. Dooley, a janitor at the company, was convicted of murder about two years later. But then the Boone County prosecutor, who was voted out of office, came under fire. Linda Tally Smith admitted to an affair with the case's lead detective, Bruce McVay. A leaked thumb drive contained messages between McVay and Tally Smith that raised more questions about whether Dooley's defense team had access to all the evidence for his trial.

Circuit Court Judge J.R. Schrand ruled that evidence was withheld and granted Dooley a new trial. Schrand wrote in his order that there was no evidence the prosecution intentionally withheld the video prior to trial. But whether or not it was intentional, the judge said the defense should have known about it. An arraignment for the child porn charges is set for Oct. 3, the same day as a pretrial conference for Dooley's new murder trial, which is scheduled for February. Dooley remains in the Boone County Jail, according to records.

White House invites Boone judge-exec to discuss opioids Nancy Daly Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
FLORENCE – Boone County's judgeexecutive is headed to Washington, D.C., later this month for a White House discussion on the opioid epidemic. Gary Moore, of Burlington, will represent the National Association of Counties at a Sept. 28 gathering of 30-35 county, city and state officials. Moore was elected in July Gary W. to serve in NACo vice Moore president roles in 2018 and 2019. Then he'll serve as NACo president in 2020. Moore called the opioid epidemic a key challenge during Monday's "State of Boone County" presentation at the Florence Rotary Club weekly luncheon. "While we’re making progress in some places ... in other places, we’re holding our own which is a challenge in itself. When you look at the number of overdoses we’re seeing a little bit of a decline in overdose deaths but that’s because of naloxone and first responder training and other things that are in place. "But the challenge is big and it’s there." In Boone County, there were 44 drug overdose deaths during 2017, according to the Kentucky Office of Drug Control Policy. That compares to 56 overdose deaths in 2016 in Boone. Moore has been invited to the White House on Sept. 28. State health directors, city and county officials will participate in a small group discussion at the White House about the opiate epidemic, "about what’s working, what’s not," he told Rotary members.
The session will focus on best practices in combatting the epidemic. “I’m going to take to them what’s working well here and then hopefully gain some information about what they’re doing that’s working that I can take back to our community,” Moore said. The Trump administration declared the opioid epidemic a public health emergency last October. In a proclamation issued last week, the president declared Sept. 16-22 Prescription Opioid and Heroin Epidemic Awareness Week. It reads in part: Drug overdoses are now the leading cause of deaths resulting from injury in the United States. In 2017, approximately 134 Americans died every day from an opioid overdose, and more than two million Americans suffered from addiction to prescription or illicit opioids. Between 1999 and 2017, more than 400,000 Americans, including so many of our young people, have died from overdoses involving opioids. We must aggressively combat this epidemic affecting our communities. I have tasked my Administration with strengthening our public health and safety response to the opioid overdose crisis. In March, I released my Administration’s plan to address the epidemic by reducing drug demand, cutting off the flow of illicit drugs, expanding access to overdose prevention and evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder, and conducting research to improve prevention and treatment in the future. This interagency effort is providing targeted funding to States and communities to help people in need. Additionally, in February, I secured $6 billion in new funding for combating the opioid epidemic.

Problem solved, right?
Data from the Ohio Health Issues and Kentucky Health Issues polls show that 28% of Ohio and Kentucky adults have used an e-cigarette. Even more troubling is that half of Ohioans and 48% of Kentuckians age 18 to 29 have tried an e-cigarette. Research is under way to better understand the health consequences of vaping, but we do know that these devices deliver nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm adolescent brain development. We need to be diligent in protecting our youth from all forms of tobacco. Some ways to take action:

It’s time for Oktoberfest German potato salad and braised sauerkraut Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld
Some of the best cooking advice I can give you is: don’t overthink a recipe. I’m certainly guilty of it, as are some of my friends who are really good cooks. Maybe you fall into that category, too. One example stands out. Last year my friend Charlene Castle, a Clermont County reader, and I wanted to make our family’s heirloom sauerkraut. Of course, when the grandparents made it, there was no measuring. Sort of like my Lebanese cooking. A handful of this, a pinch of that. Anyway, Charlene and I measured out the cabbage, the salt, pounded it down just right, and even fretted about the surrounding temperature. Those kraut crocks got more attention than our families. Our husbands told us to just let the kraut alone to do its thing. We didn’t. The result was inedible kraut. Mine was too salty; Charlene’s turned brownish. We’re going to make kraut again this year and are determined to just make it and let Nature do the rest. Anyway, I didn’t want the same thing to happen to my husband Frank’s family “receipt” for German potato salad. There’s no exact recipe. I checked the recipes I’ve made over the years, and decided this one was easiest, and most authentic. Add a little more, or less, of dressing ingredients. Just don’t overthink. Tip Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is Sept. 21-23. Details on their site. Rita Nader Heikenfeld is an herbalist, educator and author. Find her blog online at Abouteating.com . Email her at rita@communitypress.com with “Rita’s kitchen” in the subject line.
Simple Oktoberfest German potato salad If you like a more tart sauce, add more vinegar; ditto with sugar if you like it a bit sweeter. I dug up potatoes from the garden. Some were red boilers, others were white bakers. Ingredients Boiled and sliced potatoes, kept warm, about 2 pounds or 6 cups, sliced about 1/4” thick 8 slices bacon, fried and crumbled save drippings, 3-4 tablespoons 1 medium onion, chopped, about 1 cup or so Chopped celery, about 1 cup or so 2 tablespoons flour 2/3 cup cider vinegar or to taste

Braised sauerkraut for brats, metts, hot dogs For the reader who wanted to top his grilled dogs with kraut cooked with beer.
Sprinkle flour over, stir and add vinegar and water. Boil until slightly thickened and stir in sugar, salt and pepper.
Put potatoes and bacon in big bowl, pour dressing over and stir gently until blended. Let sit a bit to absorb flavors, then adjust seasonings. Garnish with parsley. Serves 6-8.

Viewpoints End-of-summer motorcycle riding tips Darek Johnson Guest Columnist Community Recorder
Autumn in the Midwest can be the best time for motorcycle touring. The summer heat is gone, the trees are changing colors and, inexplicably, back roads begin calling, especially to motorcycle riders. Still, fall can be a perilous time for riders because of weather changes and the rider’s overconfidence in his or her motorcycle. For example, riders usually conduct tune ups and tire changes in the spring and may expect such attention to last through the riding season. Don’t. In continued use, cable lubrication recedes, components loosen and, worse, tires grind down. Motorcycle tires aren’t like car tires. Motorcycle tire rubber is designed to be sticky. They’re composed of soft components that help hold your cornering bike to the road, like race car tires. Unfortunately, soft tires wear out fast, sometimes in less than a few thousand miles and once they wear down, the tread and any stickiness is spent. Believe me, you want stickiness in on your motorcycle tires, it’s part of the stability dynamics. I like to visualize motorcycle tires in terms of biscuits. You can’t slide a gob of uncooked (sticky) biscuit dough across a counter, but you can slide a cooked biscuit across the kitchen and down the hall. Which characteristic is best for a motorcy-
cle tire? Sticky, you bet. You need thick tread on motorcycle tires, so they stickily adhere to the road in corners - and so they disperse water. Tread grooves, in any tires, are designed to disperse water and heat, as well as to add to the tires adherence to the roadway. Rain water disturbs any oil that previously settled on the roadway, especially at road center, where cars are most inclined to drip oil. Usually, such oil washes away after a half hour of hard rain, so exercise even more caution during that time. Puddled rain water can cause hydroplaning, the state where a tire (motorcycle, car or truck) rides up on the water surface, like a surfboard. Obviously, you can’t control any vehicle once it hydroplanes, but the best precaution is deep tire tread and slower speeds. Oh yes, wet leaves lying across a roadway can be as slick as ice. Beware, even if they look dry, you don’t know what’s underneath. Low tires are risky because a low tire moves sideways, squishes when cornered, which causes an inertia shift that affects the weight/ balance of the motorcycle and can cause the bike to begin a slide, one you may not control. (Imagine that action added to low tire tread.) Check your tire pressure often, keep them at the manufacturers specifications. Riding a motorcycle with worn or low tires is dangerous, on city streets or country roadways. Check them often and, if necessary, change them out before the tread wears down. Your motorcycle dealer can help with advice and service. Darek Johnson, presently a business journalist, is a resident of Union, Kentucky
Fall webworms are more of nuisance than threat of webworms usually causes more defoliation than the first generation. If possible, remove the webbing with a stick or blast of water from a hose. Then collect the web including insects and discard it. Insecticides are rarely effective on webs because the chemicals do not penetrate the webbing and get repelled. Never burn the web as this can damage the plant more than the insects. Pruning is not the best idea either since you’ll be cutting off buds that will turn into leaves next year (fall webworms only eat leaves not buds). Fall webworms usually do not cause much damage to established trees. The caterpillars are feeding on leaves that are near the end of their life. With the onset of fall, trees will soon be going dormant for the winter. What a marvel that trees can live on energy reserves for half a year. So, consider these insects more of nuisance than a real threat. DJ Scully is the Campbell County Natural Resources and Environmental Management Agent.

Fall webworms feed on almost all shade, fruit and ornamental trees except evergreens. In Kentucky, some of the preferred trees include American elm, maples, hickory, and sweetgum. They place their tent on the end of branches and there is usually more than one generation each year. Fall webworms are about one inch long, hairy, and pale green or yellow. They may have either a red or black head. The black-headed larvae have black spots along the back while the redheaded have orange to reddish spots. The black-headed larvae will create a flimsy web while the redheaded larvae make a larger, denser web. The first generation of caterpillars start to feed sometime in mid-spring to early summer. After feeding, they pupate in the soil and a second generation of webworms will be observed during August or September. The second generation

Teammates celebrate with Boone County senior Rielyn Hamilton, 19, after Hamilton scored her 103rd career goal in the opening minutes during Boone County’s 5-1 win over Richmond Model, JAMES WEBER/ENQUIRER
Boone County senior Hamilton gets record Rebels’ standout is only the third NKY player to score 100 career goals, and she’s only four from all-time mark James Weber Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
FLORENCE - Her first goal of the game was like so many others in her career. Boone County senior Rielyn Hamiton took a crossing pass from fellow senior Morgan Black and deposited the ball into the net just two minutes into the Rebels’ 5-1 win over Richmond Model at home Sept. 15. There was nothing unusual about the goal, but it was a special one to give Hamilton the all-time goal-scoring record at Boone County. It was her 103rd career goal, and she ended the afternoon with 104. “It feels good,” she said. “This year has been a lot different than last and I’m glad it’s going the way it is. I was really nervous but excited the whole game. I wanted to get the first one and I’m glad it came quick. It was a good ball from Morgan.” Hamilton is only the third Northern Kentucky player on
record in the KHSAA books as scoring 100 or more goals. One of them is former Rebel Tina Lindon, whose record Hamilton broke. Lindon scored 102 goals from 1987-89. The local recordholder is Libby Leedom, a 2013 St. Henry graduate who helped the Crusaders to the 2010 state championship and finished her career with 108. Hamilton is well within reach of that mark. “It’s hard work,” said Boone head coach Mike Hughes. “She’s been part of a big special group in the runs that we’ve had and she’s been the beneficiary of all that. She’s just a worker. She runs from the 18 to the 18 and never stops. She plays in the middle and she’s up and down both ways. That’s what makes her special. You don’t know how to track her or what she’s going to do.” Hamilton has 25 goals and eight assists this year during Boone’s 9-2-1 start to the season. Her career high is 33 goals in 2016, when she helped the Rebels to the 33rd DisSee SOCCER, Page 2B
Thomas More’s football team is not accustomed to being an underdog, especially on its home field. On Saturday, the Saints pulled off what is likely the biggest upset in program history, stunning No. 16-ranked Wisconsin-Platteville, 35-28. Early on, it looked like the home team was overmatched against the non-conference opponent from the nation’s strongest Division III football conference. For the second time in three games this season, Thomas More fell behind by three touchdowns in the first quarter. In the season opener, the Saints rallied from a 21-0 deficit only to give up a late touchdown in a loss at North Carolina Wesleyan. But knowing that they could come back from being down by 21 gave them confidence this time around. “I think the hardest part is we got knocked in the mouth real quick. The good part to see is we didn’t get knocked down,” said head coach Trevor Stellman. “We staggered around and hung in there. The fact that our guys bounced back and we started going on the attack, that was a key for us.” After the first quarter, the defense didn’t just settle down; it made big plays of its own to atone for the big plays allowed to the Pioneers early on. Steve Everson was a game-changer. His interception at the goal line kept UW-Platteville from extending its lead to 28. His 45-yard return set up the Saints’ first scoring drive of the game. Two drives later, he intercepted another Colin Schuetz pass and returned it 43 yards for a defensive touchdown. See THOMAS MORE, Page 2B

We have 10 sophomores, five seniors. We’re a young group, still, but the seniors do a good job of making the sophomores feel valuable and important. They’re constantly coaching them and getting them in the right positions and that means as much as talent.” Hamilton has committed to Akron of the Mid-American Conference. The men’s team there reached the NCAA Final Four last season. “They’re rebuilding but they’re pretty good,” Hamilton said. “The campus is very nice. They have a top-five stadium. Trailing 21-14 and with the ball back before halftime, the Saints had confidence and momentum. Quarterback Justin Post scrambled and found a wide open Logan Winkler who made a slick one-handed grab in the end zone with nine seconds to play in the half. The comeback was complete, and the teams entered the locker room tied at 21. The Pioneers continued to put pressure on the Saints, converting four of their first five attempts on fourth down. The visitors reclaimed the lead on the opening drive of the second half. But that was all the points that the Saints defense would allow on the day. An impassioned speech from defensive coordinator Chris Norwell at halftime made a difference, said Coffey. Following the win, Stellman awarded Norwell, his as-

The Saints took their first lead when running back Hjavier Pitts took a dump pass from Post and shook off several would-be tacklers on his way to a 28-yard touchdown with 5:01 to play. Pitts paced the Saints with 123 rushing yards to go with 38 receiving yards and a score. It took one more stand from the defense to preserve the victory. On 4th and goal from the 13 yard line, freshman Kyle Davis leaped into the air to get a hand on a pass headed for the end zone. That sealed the comeback and the upset, and delivered Stellman his first head coaching win at BB&T Field. “It’s a special place. Obviously for me being an alum, it has a lot more meaning to me. It’s amazing, the fan backing and the support that we have,” said Stellman. The Saints improved to 2-1 and do not play another home game until October 13 against Muhlenberg.

If your arteries could talk, they'd tell you to schedule a screening.
Extending Knowledge Kathy R. Byrnes Guest Columnist Community Recorder
National Preparedness Month recognized each September, provides an opportunity to remind us that we all must prepare ourselves and our families now and throughout the year. This NPM will focus on planning, with an overarching theme: Disasters Happen. Prepare Now. Learn How. Take time to learn lifesaving skills, such as CPR and first aid, check your insurance policies and coverage for the hazards you may face, such as flood, earthquakes, and tornadoes. Make sure to consider the costs associated with disasters and save for an emergency. Also, know how to take practical safety steps like shutting off water and gas. It is important to prepare in advance to help yourself and your community. Building an emergency preparedness kit is a practical first step. Assemble a kit designed to help you cope with a variety of emergencies with the following items: ❚ First aid kit, essential medications and a backup power source for any medical equipment such as an oxygen tank. Battery powered radio, flashlight, and extra batteries. ❚ Canned food, manual can opener. ❚ Bottled water (one gallon of water per person per day for three days). ❚ Red or brightly colored cloth. ❚ NOAA weather radio. A NOAA weather radio warns the public of severe weather and natural man-made hazards from floods to forest fires to chemical spills. The radios can be purchased from discount stores, electronic retailers and online merchants. A vehicle kit should include the above items along with a fire extinguisher, booster cables and tow rope, compass and road maps, shovel, tire repair kit and pump, road flare, small tool kit kitty litter or sand for tire traction. at the Cincinnati Zoo, to hosting such opera greats as Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, it’s safe to say that the country’s second oldest opera company has grown by leaps and bounds. Now housed at the beautifully renovated Music Hall, the Cincinnati Opera has even been nominated for the prestigious International Opera Award. In addition to their performance of classic works, such as The Magic Flute and La Boehme, the company is engaged in staging new works, as they did most recently with Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Their outreach programs include initiatives that take them to churches and community centers throughout the area, and their impressive Opera Express truck has been known to pop up for performances in unexpected places. This is our first time hosting the Cincinnati Opera here at the library for a performance and we could not be more excited. Soprano Nicollette Book and accompanist Stephen Variames will perform three selections under the dome featuring our antique piano. Northern Kentucky University
Dance Program at 3 p.m. The Northern Kentucky University School of the Arts Dance Troupe will be performing two short pieces from their “Take 5 Signature Collection.” After the performance they will lead participants in a short dance movement class that features one of the pieces they just performed. Ensemble Theatre of Cincinnati at 3:30 p.m. A staple of the community in historic Over-the-Rhine, a “professional theatre dedicated to producing world and regional premieres of works that often explore compelling social issues.” The professional theatre company works to fulfil their mission through their mainstage productions as well as educational outreach programs. BCPL is excited to host Ensemble for their first program here in Boone County. For Arts Day, ETC will be bringing their Hunter Heartbeat Program, focused on Shakespeare’s works. While specifically designed for individuals with special needs, all are welcome to participate in this unique program of sensory games. Becky Kempf, Boone County Public Library

Why Haven’t Senior Homeowners Been Told These Facts?
Keep reading if you own a home in the U.S. and were born before 1955. It’s a well-known fact that for many senior citizens in the U.S. their home is their single biggest asset, often accounting for more than 50% of their total net worth. Yet, according to new statistics from the mortgage industry, senior homeowners in the U.S. are now sitting on more than 6.1 trillion dollars of unused home equity.1 With people now living longer than ever before and home prices back up again, ignoring this “hidden wealth” may prove to be short sighted. All things considered, it’s not surprising that more than a million homeowners have already used a government-insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage or “HECM” loan to turn their home equity into extra cash for retirement. However, today, there are still millions of eligible homeowners who could benefit from this FHA-insured loan but may simply not be aware of this “retirement secret.” Some homeowners think HECM loans sound “too good to be true.” After all, you get the cash you need out of your home but you have no more monthly mortgage payments.
NO MONTHLY MORTGAGE PAYMENTS?2 EXTRA CASH? It’s a fact: no monthly mortgage payments are required with a government-insured HECM loan;2 however the homeowners are still responsible for paying for the maintenance of their home, property taxes, homeowner’s insurance and, if required, their HOA fees. Another fact many are not aware of is that HECM reverse mortgages first took hold when President Reagan signed the FHA Reverse Mortgage Bill into law 29 years ago in order to help senior citizens remain in their homes. Today, HECM loans are simply an effective way for homeowners 62 and older to get the extra cash they need to enjoy retirement. Although today’s HECM loans have been improved to provide even greater financial protection for homeowners, there are still many misconceptions. For example, a lot of people mistakenly believe the home must be paid off in full in order to qualify for a HECM loan, which is not the case. In fact, one key advantage of a HECM is that the proceeds will first be used to pay off any existing liens on the property, which frees up cash flow, a
FACT: In 1988, President Reagan signed an FHA bill that put HECM loans into law. huge blessing for seniors living on a fixed income. Unfortunately, many senior homeowners who might be better off with HECM loan don’t even bother to get more information because of rumors they’ve heard. That’s a shame because HECM loans are helping many senior homeowners live a better life. In fact, a recent survey by American Advisors Group (AAG), the nation’s number one HECM lender, found that over 90% of their clients are satisfied with their loans. While these special loans are not for everyone, they can be a real lifesaver for senior homeowners. The cash from a HECM loan can be used for any purpose. Many people use the money to save on interest charges by paying off credit cards or other highinterest loans. Other common uses include making home improvements, paying off medical bills or helping other family members. Some people simply need the extra cash for everyday expenses while others are now using it as a “safety net” for financial emergencies. If you’re a homeowner age 62 or older, you owe it to yourself to learn more so that you can make an informed decision. Homeowners who are interested in learning more can request a free 2018 HECM loan Information Kit and free Educational DVD by calling American Advisors Group tollfree at 1-855-288-0455. At no cost or obligation, the professionals at AAG can help you find out if you qualify and also answer common questions such as: 1. What’s the government’s role? 2. How much money might I get? 3. Who owns the home after I take out a HECM loan? You may be pleasantly surprised by what you discover when you call AAG for more information today.
Source: http://reversemortgagedaily.com/2016/06/21/seniors-home-equity-grows-to-6-trillion-reverse-mortgageopportunity. 2If you qualify and your loan is approved, a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) must pay off any existing mortgage(s). With a HECM loan, no monthly mortgage payment is required. A HECM increases the principal mortgage loan amount and decreases home equity (it is a negative amortization loan). AAG works with other lenders and financial institutions that offer HECMs. To process your request for a loan, AAG may forward your contact information to such lenders for your consideration of HECM programs that they offer. When the loan is due and payable, some or all of the equity in the property no longer belongs to borrowers, who may need to sell the home or otherwise repay the loan with interest from other proceeds. AAG charges an origination fee, mortgage insurance premium, closing costs and servicing fees (added to the balance of the loan). The balance of the loan grows over time and AAG charges interest on the balance. Interest is not tax-deductible until the loan is partially or fully repaid. Borrowers are responsible for paying property taxes and homeowner’s insurance (which may be substantial). We do not establish an escrow account for disbursements of these payments. A set-aside account can be set up to pay taxes and insurance and may be required in some cases. Borrowers must occupy home as their primary residence and pay for ongoing maintenance; otherwise the loan becomes due and payable. The loan also becomes due and payable when the last borrower, or eligible non-borrowing surviving spouse, dies, sells the home, permanently moves out, defaults on taxes or insurance payments, or does not otherwise comply with the loan terms. American Advisors Group (AAG) is headquartered at 3800 W. Chapman Ave., 3rd & 7th Floors, Orange CA, 92868. V2017.08.23_OR
Promoting tolerance with children Extension Notes Diane Mason Guest Columnist
The new school year is well underway, and children may be meeting new people and forming life-long friendships. They may also be discovering people who have different beliefs and practices. As a parent in today’s world, one may wonder if we can possibly raise children to be caring human beings who value individual, ethnic and cultural differences. How can parents teach children to appreciate human differences and similarities? First, we can take a hard look at our own biases or thoughts toward others. Most of us in our past have at some time felt the hurt and anger of being disliked or even hated. We also may unconsciously carry in our minds the prejudices of our own parents or older family members. It is time to become aware of those attitudes of anger, pain and hate. Recognizing and letting them go is difficult. We cannot teach our children how to respect and appreciate all others if we harbor dark attitudes within us. Second, remember that we educate by example. We model kindness and hospitality, not only by talking about the right things to do, but also by our voice tones, body language, facial expressions, and our choices of friends. We can take appropriate action when we see an incident of hate and injustice occurring, rather than letting it continue. We can invite people of different ethnicities, cultures, religions or income levels to our homes, churches, and activities. We can read storybooks together and view family-friendly movies that show how diverse people get along. What are some specific suggestions for teaching children positive attitudes? First, show children love and respect by words and actions. No one can care for others if he has not experienced it himself. Hold a family meeting and set a few family ground rules for ethical, respect-
ful behavior. Second, do not be afraid to be firm, reasonable, and consistent when discipline is needed. Children learn about justice and fairness first from parents. Tune in to your child’s day-to-day life. If your child makes a biased comment or acts dishonestly, act immediately to correct the behavior. Remember also that children sometimes need time to change their behavior. Third, talk plainly about issues of ethics and bias that arise. Open communication helps promote understanding. Take your child’s questions seriously and make time to answer thoughtfully. No question is stupid or hilarious. No concern should cause your child embarrassment or shame to discuss. Make your answer clear and short. Use words your child understands. If you make a mistake, don’t be afraid to admit it. No one is perfect, and no one is completely free of bias. Families can make a difference by being models of action. Get involved in your community. If possible, work for more employment opportunities and positive youth activities. A caring community, with networks of relationships and civility, is less likely to produce hateful, violent youth and residents. All of us have a stake in bringing up children to be fully human. We should all be doing our best to ensure that the world becomes a safe, wonderful place for all children to grow up and for all to thrive. Educational programs of the Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of economic or social status and will not discriminate based on race, color, ethnic origin, national origin, creed, religion, political belief, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expressions, pregnancy, marital status, genetic information, age, veteran status, or physical or mental disability.
