Fort Mitchell native Simpson helping Charlottesville heal ‘A League of Their Own’ actress casts herself into new role Max Londberg
Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Decades after acting in a film that was as much political statement as entertainment, a Northern Kentucky native’s proximity to the Charlottesville attack redefined her political life. Freddie Simpson describes herself as a healer who now lives just outside Charlottesville and owns an acupuncture company. Her second vocation comes after a career as an actress in Paris and Los Angeles, including a role in “A League of Their Own.” “Healers often tend to stay out of the fray,” Simpson said by phone. “But the fact that I was there, it changed me. It made me engage on a more heartfelt level.” Simpson, 55, works at a spa steps removed from where James Alex Fields Jr., 21, drove his Dodge Challenger into a crowd during a white nationalist rally last year, killing 33year-old Heather Heyer. Simpson didn’t join the throng of counterprotesters that day, who walked Charlottesville streets in opposition to the anti-Semitic and racist messages spewed by various hate groups that had descended for a “Unite the Right” rally. Simpson didn’t see Fields, who was convicted of murder earlier this month, transform his muscle car into a missile to bludgeon those preaching tolerance. But in the weeks afterward, she passed the accumulating flowers and gifts and words of encouragement on her way to work. She helped those affected with the healing process, offering free services that included community acupuncture and meditation and mindfulness classes. People flooded the Halo Salt Spa, located on the very same street Fields sped down. There, Simpson spoke with many affected by the violence, noting the uptick in anxiety that followed. The experience galvanized her. “I myself have had to march just to have a voice,” she said. Simpson and Fields grew up in the same part of the country, albeit in different eras: Fields in Florence, Simpson in Fort Mitchell. Years after graduating from Villa Madonna Academy, Simpson appeared in a “A League of Their Own.” She played Ellen Sue Gotlander, acting alongside Madonna and Geena Davis.

The film was a novelty when it was released in 1992, a female-led sports movie breaking through in a male-dominated genre. Simpson also appeared in commercials, “General Hospital” and the movie “Popcorn.” She moved to Charlottesville about seven years ago, after 25 years in LA. Now 55, she recalled her past spent teaching drama to underprivileged children and yoga to clients. But she was never one for marches, nor did she ever feel as involved politically as she does now. As the one-year anniversary of the white nationalist demonstration approached, Simpson decided to join a peaceful rally held downtown. “The whole spectacle of Charlottesville has really geared me to gender and racial equality, the environment, immigration, LGBTQ rights,” she said. “There’s so much injustice.”

The partial federal government shutdown that still has no end in sight means affected government employees can drive to Florence for free eats. Government employees who are not getting paid during the shutdown eat free at Smokin' This and That BBQ, 10020 Demia Way, Florence, according to the restaurant's Facebook page. The Dec. 22 social media post has generated 68 comments and 420 shares as of Dec. 27. No end was in sight last Thursday morning on day six of the shutdown, according to a USA TODAY article. The White House and Congress are not any closer to ending the budget impasse that has shut down about 25 percent of the federal government, according to the same USA TODAY story. The barbecue restaurant offered the same deal in January 2018 when there was a different shutdown, according to a Jan. 22 Enquirer story. "It's not about being a Republican or Democrat," owner Guy Cummins told The Enquirer at that time. "All they're doing is picking on plain American folks. That hurts. Most government workers don't make that much money." The restaurant regularly offers special promotions to assist members of the military and veterans.

Bourbon barrel gift scam busted in Kentucky
What do you think of a new roadway in Northern Kentucky? Melissa Reinert

Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
So much for holiday spirits. If you tried to buy an authentic distillery barrel online as a gift for the bourbon lover in your life, you might have been scammed. Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear put out a scam alert for OakWoodBarrels.com, which claims to sell bourbon, craft beer and spirit barrels as gifts out of Florence and Lexington. According to its LinkedIn page, Oak Wood is “a family-owned, dynamic, global company” specializing in barrels “handcrafted from the finest American White Oak and overseen by a master cooper with more than three decades of knowledge and experience.” But three customers, including two from Kansas and Virginia, complained to the Better Business Bureau that they never got the barrels after paying over $650 for them, according to the scam alert. The BBB launched an investigation in January 2017 which discovered there is no building at the Lexington address listed on the company’s site. Customer mail sent to the listed address on Turfway Road in Florence was reportedly sent back by the post office. Even a letter sent from the attorney

general’s office got sent back. The Oak Wood Barrels Company website, which was registered in Great Britain, has since been taken offline. “During the Christmas season it is sad that con artists go to extreme lengths in order to steal money and personal information from those who support Kentucky’s popular bourbon industry,” Beshear said. Kim Sweazy, director of BBB operations for Central and Eastern Kentucky said they had contacted Beshear’s office for further investigation. “Kentucky is well-known for its bourbon distilleries,” Sweazy said, “The people behind this scam used that recognition by providing what our investigation showed are fake Lexington addresses on the website.” If you’ve fallen victim to this scam, contact the Attorney General’s Office or make an online complaint.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has launched NKYOuterLoopStudy.org – a new public involvement tool to encourage feedback regarding new transportation options for those who travel throughout Northern Kentucky. The Northern Kentucky Outer Loop Study will examine potential alternatives for new transportation connections in the southern portions of Boone, Kenton and Campbell counties, as well as the northern portions of Gallatin, Owen, Grant, Pendleton and Bracken counties. Potential east-west alternatives that connect Interstate 71 and the AA Highway are among the options. No decisions regarding specific roadway alignments have been made and local input will help to shape the next steps. “The public will play a critical role in the KYTC study process by reviewing our early information on potential roadway concepts and providing us with feedback,” said Bob Yeager, chief district engineer for District 6. “Our team is currently studying potential improvements that would create additional transportation options and stimulate economic development
within our region, but we need the public to weigh in as we move throughout our study process.” A new roadway project typically advances through the following phases: ❚ Planning ❚ Preliminary engineering and environmental evaluation ❚ Design ❚ Right of way and utility coordination ❚ Construction The Northern Kentucky Outer Loop Study is part of the planning phase. The scope of the current study is to: ❚ Forecast traffic volumes of potential roadway alternatives; ❚ Evaluate the impact of potential roadway alternatives on surrounding routes; ❚ Define socioeconomic impacts and benefits; ❚ Develop initial right of way, utility relocation and construction cost estimates; ❚ Perform a financial study and review funding options; ❚ Identify environmental features and impacts; ❚ and Receive public input. NKYOuterLoopStudy.org offers users visual information, study background and public involvement tools to provide feedback to KYTC and to support outreach within local communities.

Drug agents: Meth’s getting cheaper - and it’s everywhere Terry DeMio and Chris Mayhew Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
The recent shutdown of a “meth house” yielding four arrests in Northern Kentucky was just one more sign of a changing drug scene, police say. Crystal methamphetamine is inundating the illicit drug market, and it’s predicted to stay a while. Called ice by most users, it’s usually quite pure, and its price has come down this year, said Chris Conners, director of the Northern Kentucky Drug Strike Force. “About three years ago, we were spending about $2,000 to $2,200 per ounce” for crystal meth, said Conners. “Now we’re paying $500 an ounce.” “If the price is that low, that means the market is flooded,” he said. Across Kentucky, nearly 500 law enforcement agencies seized more meth this year than any other drug. They racked up a 12.5 increase in meth submissions to Kentucky State Police crime labs, records show. The increase in meth seizures was second only to that of the deadly synthetic opiate fentanyl, at 16.5 percent more cases than in 2017. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration called out meth’s continued prevalence in its 2017 National Drug Threat Assessment. And in Ohio, Interact for Health, the Norwood-based nonprofit health advocate, noted that 1 in 10 Ohioans polled in 2017 knew someone who had a problem with meth. Northern Kentucky’s Villa Hills police busted up a Crescent Springs-based meth house on a side street near Buttermilk Pike after monitoring activity for months. “There was more than one family staying there,” Police Chief Bryan Allen said, “and to stay there, you had to sell the meth.” Kenton County SWAT and Villa Hills officers searched the Terra Cotta Avenue house on a warrant Nov. 26. Six people were inside. Allen said officers had hoped to place two children younger than 10 who had been seen at the house in protective custody, but the kids weren’t there when police arrived. The police chief said the house was a site of drug trafficking and use. The meth was sold at nearby BP and Sunoco gas station lots, he said. Police found bags of suspected methamphetamine, glass pipes, scales, suspected heroin residue in a bottle cap and pills not in proper containers. Rachel Elisha Heger, 45, and Steven Lee Lienhart, 47, who lived there, were charged with trafficking meth, heroin possession, and two other lesser possession charges, according to police records. Krista Rae Cortez, 38, of Covington, and Anthony Wayne Thompson, 33, of Price Hill, were each charged with possession of methamphetamine. District Court Judge Ann Ruttle put Cortez into Kenton County’s Heroin Expedited Addiction Recovery Treatment program on Dec. 5, court records show. As of Dec. 12, Heger, Lienhart and Thompson were still in Kenton County’s jail awaiting trial. The Northern Kentucky Drug Strike Force started seeing a significant rise in

meth on the streets a few years ago. The team wasn’t involved in the Crescent Springs case but has handled meth investigations that have yielded both state and federal charges. From July 2017 through June 30 this year, his agents seized about 21 pounds of meth. The year before, the total was seven pounds, Conners said. The drug’s purity has been consistently better over the past few years than when meth was made cheaply and locally by its traffickers and users in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Conners said. “None of this is being cooked in barns in Northern Kentucky,” Conners said. Federal agents say the meth in the United States today is largely coming from Mexico. But the deadliest drug currently on the streets is the synthetic opiate fentanyl, according to officials including Hamilton County Coroner Lakshmi Sammarco. Conners said his agents haven’t seen a mix of crystal meth with fentanyl, although they’ve occasionally seized fentanyl during a meth investigation. Kentucky State Police crime lab analysts have seen the mix, an official there said. Even as meth has risen, there’s been a dramatic drop in heroin submitted to the Kentucky crime labs, at 27 percent fewer cases. Conners said nearly all heroin his force seized in the past year has been tainted with fentanyl.

Sports Ryle grad Morgan prophetic in his first bowl game win Melanie Laughma Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Tanner Morgan passed for 132 yards and two TDs in leading Minnesota past Georgia Tech. PHOTO PROVIDED BY MINNESOTA ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS.
Ryle High School football alum and current Minnesota Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan added fortunetelling to his skill set. The redshirt freshman told the Star Tribune after the Dec. 26 Quick Lane Bowl game against Georgia Tech Dec. 26 about a conversation he had with teammate and punter Jacob Herbers before the game: 'Hey, dude, I love you, but you're not punting today.' His words were prophetic as Herbers didn't punt once in the 34-10 Minnesota win at Ford Field, Detroit, Michigan. The
Star Tribune reported they, in fact, haven’t had to punt since the second quarter of the Nov. 24 victory at Wisconsin. While his running back Mohamed Ibrahim (224 rushing yards), receiver Tyler Johnson and defense were the stars of this show, Morgan's line wasn't shabby: He was 7-for-13 for 132 yards and two touchdowns to Johnson. He also had three carries for 3 yards. Since taking over as the head signal caller from the injured incumbent starting quarterback Zack Annexstad, Morgan has led the Gophers to a 4-2 record and finished the season with 1,401 yards and nine touchdowns.
Longtime NKY referee, ex-Holmes star Burkart dies James Weber Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
The Northern Kentucky basketball community is mourning the loss of one of its most respected veteran officials. Bob Burkart of Covington died Dec. 26. He was 66. According to the Kentucky High School Athletic Association database, he was a Level 3 basketball official (the highest) in his 45th season, one of the longesttenured officials in Kentucky. A post on a Facebook page announcing his death said: “And, even if he missed a call, he was such a nice guy you didn’t want to argue with him. RIP Bob - you were a good man.” Dean Fookes, a former basketball coach at Boone County High School, said: “One of Covington Holmes and Latonia’s best. You always knew when Bobby showed up to officiate your game you would get his best effort." In recent years, Burkart spent much of his time training new officials entering the sport. And he always took time to help young players understand the rules. “Bob was the ultimate professional,” said Henry Drees, who has been a local official for 25 years. “He was the kind of guy you could sit around with and talk about rules and plays. “He was very easy to talk with and would be the first to diffuse a situation and admit when he was wrong,” said BJ Shockney of Bellevue High School. “Don't make them like that anymore.” Burkart brought the best out of the officials he worked with. “You knew when you were on the court with him that it was going to go well,” Drees said. “He was very smooth. He just loved the game. Bob loved basketball and he loved being on the court. You just had to worry about doing your job because you knew he was going to do his job. All you had to do is worry about yourself, and that makes a big difference.” Burkart was a basketball standout at Holmes High School. He went on to the University of Kentucky and played on the Wildcats’ freshman basketball team during the 1970-71 season, then turned to officiating not long after his playing career ended. The UK freshman “Kittens”, coached by Joe B. Hall, went 12-8 that season. Burkart played in 11 games, scoring 13 total points. The freshman team also included Newport Catholic graduate Joe Niemeyer. Burkart was also an accomplished table tennis player. He was a long-time member of the Cincinnati Table Tennis Club who competed in major tournaments.
