Nipsey Hussle’s ‘Racks in the Middle’ took home the Grammy Award for ‘Best Rap Performance’ on Sunday night. The award was the fi rst for Roddy Ricch and Hit-Boy and second for Hussle, who earned it posthumously, according to the Grammys. If the song had won in a diff erent category – “Best Rap Song” – a Northern Kentucky man would have come home with his own Grammy for his work on the track. It was about four years ago in a Florence, Kentucky, basement studio where Dustin James “DJ” Corbett and Nicholas “Sunny” Race fi rst started dreaming of their music-making business. They didn’t make music together for the fi rst year they knew each other. They just talked. Corbett, 33, of Florence, stressed his commitment to family and faith. Race, 39, of Covington, talked about the artists he’d worked with in Los Angeles. The duo discussed politics, religion and what they envisioned for their careers in the music industry. “I think we were shooting for, like, right now,” says Corbett. This January Corbett will be heading to the Grammy Awards, nominated for Best Rap Song with “Racks In The Middle,” with Race by his side. Race says he used to think they were going too far with their fantasies of what a career in music might be.

run into. Corbett: “You’re just sitting there, like, eating Chik-fi l-A or something, and then the door opens and it’s–” Race: “Ty Dolla $ign–” Corbett: “ ‘Oh, Okay.’ I literally was walking, I turned the corner and – the studio that we work in is Chalice – I turn the corner, I’m walking too fast, and I like, I slam my shoulder into Future’s chest–” Race: “Ohhhh!” Corbett: “Like so hard. Like, and then, I didn’t know who it was at fi rst, when I looked up and he’s tall, like he was, I was like... I don’t even know if I said sorry or not. Like, I just, like, my mind went blank and I was like, ‘Uhhh...’ “ Race: “Your face said enough.” The Cincinnati boys have earned spots in those studios because of multiple years Race spent building relationships with those producers, and because of what Hit-Boy, Race and others in the community now call “The Corbett Eff ect.” “The Corbett Eff ect” is where those instruments in Corbett’s studio come into play, but mostly, the eff ect is comprised of Corbett’s own voice. When he thinks of a sound he wants to use in a song, he’ll just mimic with his voice what he wants to hear. “Well, the mic’s right here,” Corbett says. “Let me just do that. And then put all these eff ects on it, all these diff erent things to give it a vibe.”

“Now it’s like, dang, we’re just getting started,” Race says. “We weren’t dreaming big enough. So now it’s like, what do we dream about next?”

The Cincinnati boys The front end of Corbett’s home studio has a center table with a xylophone. A soft green light shines onto the back wall. On the outskirts of the room are three guitars and a brass instrument of some sort. “I don’t even know what kind of horn that is,” Corbett says, gesturing towards it. Corbett is not a classically trained musician. Race is not a classically trained engineer. But the pair are pulling rank in L.A. studios where Hit-Boy – a seven-time Grammy nominated producer and 2012 Grammy Award winner for Best Rap Song with “N****s in Paris,” performed by Jay-Z and Kanye West – hosts major artists of all genres. Race and Corbett say the L.A. stars refer to them as “The Cincinnati boys.” Hit-boy’s studios are full of surprises– you never know who you will

Race says that kind of approach is extremely rare. “The Corbett Eff ect,” and the eff ort that comes with it, is why he brought Corbett out to L.A. in the fi rst place. “I was like, ‘This dude is making classical sounds, like, that’s not a sample? That’s a... oh, you made that whole song just to be able to use it as a sample?’ “ Race said of his early impression of Corbett. “Like oh my god... you don’t need to be doing highlight fi lms of basketball people and, you need to be– Because I’m in these circles, and you’re better than these guys.” The same approach works in Race’s engineering. He says he can’t teach his techniques to anyone else because, most of the time, he is just listening for what he thinks sounds right. “They think, ‘Oh, he’s trying to keep it a secret,’ “ Race says. “No, I just don’t know what I’m doing. I’m just doing what works.”

The loop that started ‘Racks in the Middle’ In the studio, Corbett pulls up the fi le that ended up as the genesis for “Racks in the Middle.” The six-second loop is comprised of two sounds: Corbett’s voice and a bell. He created it in October of 2018. Corbett says the music industry is See GRAMMY, Page 2A

Shannon Fabert likes to keep a close eye on Northern Kentucky politics. She's watched the election cycles heat up and cool down, observed candidates and took notes. This time she decided it was time to stop observing campaign herself. Fabert, 41, of Burlington, threw herself into the Democratic primary for the 4th Congressional District to unseat incumbent Republican Rep. Thomas Massie. “Congress belongs to the people and I think we need representation that looks and feels like us,” Fabert told The Enquirer.

Fabert, a newcomer to politics, described herself as a moderate with a few progressive ideas. Her background is rooted in business consulting, which included a stint at Jack Casino when it was named Horseshoe Casino. Fabert will face Democratic candidate Alexandra Owensby of Fort Thomas in the May primary election. Both woman want to unseat conservative Massie who has represented the district for seven years. The district covers Boone, Campbell, Kenton, Pendleton and Gallatin, stretching into into 15 more counties. Previous Democrats haven't gotten close to beating Massie. Kentucky bill targets doctors who help transgender kids with sex reassignment Chris Kenning

Louisville Courier Journal USA TODAY NETWORK

Doctors could be jailed for providing transgender youth with identity-related medical treatments under a new bill in the Kentucky legislature, the latest in a series of conservative legislative eff orts in several states aimed at transgender minors. The bill, sponsored by state Rep. Savannah Maddox, would make it a felony for medical providers to prescribe medications, including puberty-blocking or hormone treatments, or conduct surgeries, for anyone younger than 18 with the intent to alter their gender. Ostensibly aimed at barring children who could still be grappling with their

going towards a more assembly-line structure, which is why he has started making fi ve loops a day to send to producers. He says most of the songs we hear on the radio start this way. “Lizzo’s ‘Truth Hurts’ song, I just was working with the guy who made that loop,” Corbett said. “It’s almost beginning to be this, like, subculture within the industry of like, ‘Oh, really big producer? I wonder who does his samples.’ Or, ‘I wonder who’s doing his loops.’ And usually you’ll fi nd the guy who’s, like, sittin’ three seats away, in the back, it’s probably that guy. Just kinda hanging out.” Corbett did more than just “hang out” after making the original loop for “Racks in the Middle.” He happened to be in L.A., in the studio, when Hit-Boy pulled out Corbett’s loop track to make a beat. Drums were added, Corbett added some more melodies and arranged the progression and before he knew it Roddy Ricch was in the room and Hit-Boy was asking him to record. Corbett is not an engineer, but that day he stepped up and recorded Roddy Ricch’s part. “I was sweating,” Corbett said. “I don’t sweat that much, like, I don’t have a lot of sweat glands or something like that. But, I’m telling you, I was just, like– COMMUNITY PRESS & RECORDER NEWSPAPERS ❚ 312 Elm Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202 ❚ 2116 Chamber Center Drive, Fort Mitchell, KY 41017 NEWS TIPS ........................................513-903-6027 HOME DELIVERY..............................859-781-4421 ADVERTISING...................................513-768-8404 CLASSIFIEDS ....................................513-242-4000 SUBSCRIPTIONS...............................513-248-7113

He said it represents a “coordinated political attack” on transgender people “for election-year purposes.” Maddox did not respond to messages seeking comment. But last fall she wrote on her Facebook page her intention to draft the bill, saying, “I am a strong ad-

I felt like everyone could see how much sweat was comin’ off my face.” Nipsey Hussle recorded his part a week later, after Corbett left L.A. In just a couple weeks Hit-Boy sent him the fi nal track, and two weeks later the song was released; a quick turnaround in the music business. “This night, I don’t know what, there really was something special from the beginning to the end of this thing,” Corbett says. Six weeks later, Nipsey Hussle was shot and killed. When Corbett saw “Racks in he Middle” was nominated for a Grammy Award, and saw his own name in the release, he says he was reminded of Nipsey Hussle and the importance of the song – a song with lyrics, Corbett admits, weren’t meant directly for Corbett or the experiences he’s had. “It was a moment that I will never forget, for sure. For sure,” Corbett said. “And I’m just extremely grateful to be a part of something that’s way bigger than me.”

What’s next for The Recipe? The Cincinnati boys are trying to brand themselves as “The Recipe,” since they have skills – or, techniques due to lack of skills – unique to the business. “I think people, a lot of times, like, we’re a breath of fresh air out there. Cuz we’re breaking every rule,” Corbett said. “We don’t know what’s wrong and right to do all the time. So we’re just getting these results from this real weird way of doing stuff .” Corbett and Race both say they want to stay in Cincinnati. They want to make Cincinnati a go-to place for major artists to record. The plan is to open a studio in the city within the next couple of years. “Cuz it’s gonna happen here,” Race said. “And I just want to make sure we’re there.”

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week issued a study that found access to puberty blockers helped reduced risks of mental health problems and suicide attempts, which some studies say are as high 40% among transgender youth. “It’s a horrible thing,” Cassie Kasey

Coast Guard: Coal barge strikes I-275 bridge in NKY A coal barge struck the Carroll Lee Cropper Bridge along Interstate I-275 in Northern Kentucky early Tuesday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. No injuries were reported, and traffi c is not impacted, said dispatchers with Kentucky State Police. The bridge and highway remain open. students from using public restrooms that align with their gender identities. Another bill targets transgender individuals in sports, forcing student-athletes to compete in school sports based on the sex listed on their birth certifi cate. Bills restricting access to hormone treatment and surgeries for young transgender people have been introduced in several states, including South Dakota, said Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality. Such measures run counter to standards and guidelines endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Medical Association, the group said. The Kentucky Medical Association did not immediately provide a response to the legislation. Some transgender residents said it would make getting knowledgeable

A Petersburg, Kentucky man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Thursday, Jan. 23 after police said they found 27 grams of methamphetamine in his car.

Craig Jeremy Harp, 42, was arrested by Covington Police on Nov. 30, 2018, according to jail records. A release from the Department of Justice states Harp was driving a car in Covington when offi cers stopped him for a traffi c violation. Police found crystal methamphetamine and a digital scale on Harp's person during the stop. After searching the vehicle, offi cers recovered another seven bundles of crystal methamphetamine. The release states a total of 27 grams of methamphetamine was confi scated that day.

Harp was arrested at the traffi c stop in November 2018 and indicted on drug traffi cking in June 2019, according to the release. The release states Harp has prior felony convictions for drug traffi cking. Federal law states Harp must serve 85 percent of his 20 year prison sentence, and will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Offi ce for eight years. transgender medical care extremely diffi cult for families. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends giving youths access to “comprehensive gender-affi rming and developmentally appropriate health care” while laying out risks and benefi ts. Janet Vessels, a Kentucky clinical counselor who works with transgender youth in collaborations with doctors, said providers follow established medical guidance and families carefully weigh risks and benefi ts at every step. “They don’t do it haphazardly,” she said. “There are a lot of things about trans kids that a lot of people don’t understand,” said Jeri Stine Hahn, who raised a Lexington transgender stepdaughter and who runs a support group for parents. Her stepdaughter, Crystal Hahn, 20, said she socially transitioned at age 10, began hormone blockers at age 11 and began estrogen treatment at age 15. If the proposed bill were law, she said, the struggles would have been monumental. “I genuinely don’t know if I’d even be

alive,” she said. Hahn believes the bills were fueled in part after conservatives seized on a case in Texas last year, when two parents clashed in a highly publicized custody battle that included a clash over their 7year-old and gender identity. According to media reports, the father alleged that the mother, a doctor, had pushed their child into self-identifying as a girl and advocated for related medical care, a charge the mother fl atly denied. Nonetheless, the father drew support from conservative politicians. Donald Trump Jr. last fall tweeted, “This is child abuse. People need to start to stand up against this bullshit.” The New York Times reported that the South Dakota bill received input from groups including the conservative Alliance Defending Freedom. The Arizona-based group didn’t comment on whether it had consulted on Kentucky’s law but issued a statement. “Our laws should protect every child’s opportunity to have a natural childhood. While approaches may differ, we should all agree that there is

nothing natural or healthy about pumping kids full of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones,” said Matt Sharp, the alliance’s senior counsel and director of state government relations. “Children should not be pushed to receive experimental treatments that can leave them permanently sterile and physically marred for life.” The proposed bill in Kentucky also would create protections for public employees who express opinions about gender identity. And it says parents can withhold consent for “any activity designed and intended to form their child’s conceptions of sex or to treat gender dysphoria,” the mismatch between gender identity and a person’s sex at birth. The state, under the bill, cannot infringe on that decision. Its intent may be to give objecting parents a legal foothold, Keisling said. The measure exempts children with a medically verifi able genetic disorder of sexual development, the bill says. Reporter Chris Kenning can be reached at ckenning@gannett.com or 502-396-3361.

SCHOOL NEWS Third-graders are helping transform lives, one wish at a time

Conner High School student’s scores perfect

The third-graders at Florence Elementary are helping transform lives, one wish at a time for their service learning project. The Make-a-Wish fountain visited Florence Elementary third-graders, educating them on the program which restores hope, gives strength and off ers joy to critically ill children in their greatest time of need. The students learned that to be considered you have to be between the ages of 2 1⁄ 2-18 years old to receive this life-changing wish. Granting these wishes makes the individuals feel normal again, “When a wish is granted, a child replaces fear with confi dence, sadness with joy and anxiety with hope. This is why wishes matter.” The children receiving a wish could choose from options that might include meet a celebrity, travel to Disney World, receive a gift, take a vacation or give back to the community. One wish granted in the general area did provide soup and warmth for their community, an extreme selfl ess act of kindness. Make-a-Wish and Macy’s department store have been partnering together for 12 years, donating up to one million per year. The third-grade students encouraged all grade-level students to write a letter to Santa, Macy’s or Make-a-Wish. They could include why you were on the nice list, what magic means to you, your magical holiday or a wish for you or someone else. With each letter received by Macy’s, Macy’s would then donate $1 to the Make-a-Wish fountain. Each third-grade class had a diff erent mission to achieve a common goal. One class created a powerpoint and another class produced commercials both highlighting the objective and the Make-aWish vision. Posters were designed and hung throughout the school. Brochures were drawn up and folded to be distributed to all. The fi nal step was providing

Conner High School is proud to announce Emma Stewart has scored a perfect score of 36 on the ACT. What is even more amazing is that Emma is currently a junior at Conner High School. Emma’s score is one of only one-tenth of 1% of students who take the national standardized test, which consists of Mathematics, English, Science and Reading. Emma is the daughter of Dave Stewart, Conner High School Social Studies teacher, and Leslie, who is a nurse. She is currently considering Purdue, Ohio State and Georgia Tech but knows she has one more year to decide. Emma’s favorite subject is calculus, and she is interested in engineering as a career. In addition to her academics, Emma is a member of the Conner High School and the YMCA swim teams. She is also very involved in her church. Conner High School would like to say congratulations on such an amazing achievement. We are so proud of you. You certainly represent us with honor, pride and integrity. Good luck in your future endeavors. Susan Sorrell, Conner High School

Sports St. Henry boys win second All ‘A’ Classic state championship James Weber

Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

RICHMOND – On the day the All “A” Classic remembered its founder, Stan Steidel, St. Henry honored him the best way by bringing a title back home to Northern Kentucky. The St. Henry boys basketball team defeated Frankfort 77-70 to win the All “A” state championship Sunday afternoon at Eastern Kentucky University’s McBrayer Arena. St. Henry (16-3) won its second All “A” title, becoming the second Northern Kentucky school to do so behind Newport Central Catholic’s four. Frankfort falls to 11-13. “It’s amazing,” said St. Henry senior starter Luke Maher. “I’ve never felt this way before in my life. It’s breathtaking. I love it.” The tournament commemorated the career of Steidel, who created the tournament in 1980 and was a coach and administrator in various roles in Northern Kentucky for more than 50 years, most recently as Holmes athletic director. At halftime of both championship games, the tournament staff showed a video presentation of his life and career on the large video board at McBrayer Arena, and presented his family with special gifts. The tournament staff wore the same type of red sweater vest that Steidel would always wear to the tournament. After the games, it was the red and blue of the Crusaders who won the day. Led by junior Wyatt Vieth, who had 30 points in the fi nal on 10 of 17 shooting, the Crusaders built a big lead in the second quarter and held the Panthers at bay. Vieth, whose uncle Todd was a key player for St. Henry’s fi rst All “A” title team (2003) was named tournament most valuable player. “Wyatt, he loves this atmosphere,” said St. Henry head coach David Faust. “He made some big plays down the stretch and he wants the ball in his hands. You got to have somebody like that but we have a few more guys like that as well.”

St. Henry junior Wyatt Vieth celebrates as time runs out as St. Henry defeated Frankfort 77-70 in the state championship game of the boys basketball All "A" Classic Jan. 26, at Eastern Kentucky University's McBrayer Arena. JAMES WEBER/THE ENQUIRER

St. Henry shot 52 percent from the fl oor. Junior Ryan Butler had 15 points, shooting 7 of 9 from the fl oor. “A lot of teams play six, seven players,” he said. “We have 10 who can play. It really helps us because we’re not tired. I feel great. Best game I’ve ever played. We’re going to celebrate now and use it as a motivator to get better and hopefully win region.” Jude Bessler had 12 points and fi ve rebounds, with 10 of the points coming by halftime. Senior Connor Shea added nine points. The Crusaders had nine players play eight or more minutes, a

staple of this year’s team. “When we built our lead, we ran our off ense and did a good job keeping them out of the lane,” Faust said. “Give credit to Frankfort, they came back and their pressure hurt us. The biggest thing is our depth. That has been our key. St. Henry went on an 8-0 run, six by Butler to take a 22-17 lead in the second quarter, and never trailed again. The run continued into an overall 21-4 spurt to put St. Henry up 35-21. Vieth had seven points in the run, and Shea fi nished it with a 3-pointer with two minutes left in the half.

The Panthers climbed within eight in the third quarter, but a basket by Maher pushed the lead back to double fi gures. The Panthers rallied within fi ve at 66-61 with 1:30 to go, but brothers Connor and Cory Shea went 5-for-6 from the foul line. Connor and Vieth were both 4for-4 at the line to end the game and Cory 3-for-4. It was the 410th career win for Faust. “These guys keep me young,” Faust said. “I’ve been blessed all my years with great kids. If it wasn’t for them, I See ST. HENRY, Page 2B

You can now call them the Y’alls. “It’s a very exciting time in our organization’s history,” Y’alls Vice President and GM Josh Anderson said. “We have a name that is uniquely Florence, and on a larger scale uniquely Kentucky.” The new team name was announced during a recent meeting at the Florence City Government building. The Florence City Council approved the name during the meeting. “We think this is an incredible part of our culture and we want to tell that story,” said Jay Becker, owner of BLDG, the design fi rm that helped rebrand the team. Players are mostly just out of college or spent some time in the lower levels of minor-league baseball. Ryle’s Maddie Scherr named a McDonald’s All-American James Weber

Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

Ryle senior Maddie Scherr is an AllAmerican. The senior guard was recently named to the McDonald’s All-American Game. The game is April 1 in Houston. Forty-eight high school seniors – comprising the top 24 girls and 24 boys in the country – were selected by a committee of basketball experts from more than 900 nominated players. The players will join a prestigious and historic group of basketball legends when they take the court for the 43rd McDonald’s All American Games on Wednesday, April 1, at the Toyota Center in Houston. The games will be telecast live on ESPN2 and ESPN. Tickets are on sale now. Scherr is the only Cincinnati-area

player on the roster. She has signed with Oregon, who was an NCAA Final Four team last year. This year’s Oregon team has reigning national player of the year Sabrina Ionescu and former Kentucky Miss Basketball Erin Boley from Elizabethtown. All fi ve members of her signing class with the Ducks were named to the McDonald’s roster. “We’re really excited about this group,” Oregon coach Kelly Graves said in a news release from the early signing period in November. “We targeted the right players – ones who fi t who we are and how we play. From all reports it’s the No. 1 ranked class in the country, but to me, that doesn’t matter – we got the right players.” Scherr was the state tournament MVP in 2019, leading Ryle to its fi rst state championship. Scherr recently scored her 2,000th career point.

Walton scored 22 points in the third quarter to take a 38-31 lead, sparked by a personal nine-point run by Neeley within a minute and a half. She hit two 3pointers then scored on an and-one play to lift WV from a 29-28 lead to a 38-31 advantage. Maggie Buerger had seven points in the run. The Banshees scored the next seven points and tied it early in the fourth quarter at 38. Bethlehem took the lead after that, but the Bearcats stayed in range with a clutch 3-pointer by Maggie Buerger and two free throws by Emma Strunk.

hit two free throws for Bethlehem with 43 seconds to go. The Bearcats missed four shots after that and could not get to within a onescore game. “We put ourselves in position to win and didn’t fi nish it,” said Bearcats head coach Mark Clinkenbeard. “It was like last year all over again. It’s tough to watch them give what they give and come up short. The best part is there is more basketball to play, but it’s tough right now. “They made plays. They made plays and we didn’t, that’s the bottom line. The kids made plays all week and we came up a little bit short.” Strunk had 11 points, Neeley 13 and Buerger 10. They were the Bearcats’ alltournament picks. Neeley had eight rebounds and Strunk seven. Bethlehem, considered a top contender for the overall Fifth Region crown in March, had eight blocks, four by Mikiah Livers-Bryant who was a disruptive presence for the WV off ense all game. “There were long inside and we had

to shoot over the top of them,” Clinkenbeard said. “Bethlehem is here for a reason. We had a good game plan. The kids executed it.” Boys fi nal ST. HENRY (16-3): Maher 2 0 4, Bessler 4 3 12, Con. COMMUNITY NEWS Exact Metrology helps sculptor create life-size statues of fi rst responders Cincinnati native Tom Tsuchiya is a well-known artist whose previous work includes bronze statues of former Cincinnati Reds players near the entrance of Great American Ball Park and the inductees of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Now, Tsuchiya’s artistic skills are on display in Florence, Kentucky. The Florence Community Plaza features life-size statues of a fi refi ghter, a public service worker and a police offi cer. Although Tsuchiya has used 3D software, digital scanning, 3D printing and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) to help create sculptures in the past, the Florence project was the fi rst time digital scans of actual people were used to create a sculpture. Tsuchiya planned the general pose of the fi refi ghter, the public service worker and the police offi cer with a little girl, using a 3D design program. He asked Matthew Martin, the Division Manager of Exact Metrology, and Scott Menne to digitally scan actual employees from the City of Florence. The fi refi ghter in gear was scanned at the fi re station, while the police offi cer and Martin’s daughter were scanned at the Florence city headquarters. A friend of the City of Florence posed as the public service worker. Martin explained that Tsuchiya usually makes clay miniatures of his sculptures and has Exact Metrology 3D scan them. Concerning the Florence statues, Martin said, “Tom took a diff erent approach and had Exact Metrology 3D scan the life-size fi gures using the Artec 3D Eva scanner. The fi gures were captured using a series of images at 30fps.” After Tsuchiya fi nished the sculpting, the clay/ foam/wood statues were delivered to the Sincerus Bronze foundry in Indianapolis to cast them in bronze. The whole process, from concept to bronze fi nishing, took four to fi ve months for each sculpture. Resolve to better yourself fi nancially Even if you didn’t make a resolution to improve yourself fi nancially, the new year is always a good time to take a look at where you’ve been and where you are going. Taking stock of your current fi nancial situation is a good place to start. Mason Ask yourself these questions: Am I comfortable with my current fi nancial situation? Do I stress over my fi nances? Do I fi nd it diffi cult to pay all of my bills each month? Would I have enough saved to cover a major unexpected expense like car repairs, heating/air condition repairs, etc.? Were the holidays fi nancially stressful? If you fi nd you need to make improvements to your fi nancial health, set a goal and work toward it throughout the year. Make sure your goal is SMART: Specifi c, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound. Basically, SMART goals are outlined in detail, provide a path forward, are realistic and will be accomplished

in a certain time period. For example, if you want to increase your savings by $1,200 by the end of the year, resolve to put $100 in your savings account each month. If you want to make holiday spending less stressful this year, many banks also off er Christmas club accounts, which allow you to save for the holidays throughout the year. With the holidays still fresh on your mind, it’s a good idea to add up your expenses from last year to give you a savings amount to shoot for. If your goal is debt reduction, think about ways you can meet that goal. Do you have debts that are close to being paid off that you could go ahead and pay off to save on interest? Maybe you want to pay extra on the debt each month to more quickly reach that goal. You may be able to negotiate lower rates with your creditors to save on interest. Your resolution could also be to limit the charges or not put any charges on your credit cards this year. Develop a monthly budget. A budget will allow you to see on paper where your money actually goes each month. It will also show you areas you may be able to reduce to meet your fi nancial goals. Make sure to include your fi nancial resolution in the budget.

Encourage your children to start good fi nancial habits. Talk to them about the importance of saving. If they do not have a savings account, open one for them with some of the money they received during the holidays. Let them have an allowance and decide how they should portion it out. Be a role model by letting them see you save. Encourage them to read books about money, saving, investing and sharing and talk with them about what they read or learned. BY VICTOR BAROCAS / EDITED BY WILL SHORTZ Victor Barocas is a professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Minnesota with more than 100 published works in the field. Given his profession, the genesis of this puzzle (spelled out at 71-Across) is probably obvious. Besides the theme, Victor included colorful fill like 8- and 29-Across and 8-, 43-, 56-, 82- and 100-Down — all of which help make for enjoyable solving. This is Victor’s 14th crossword for The Times and his fifth Sunday in the past year. — W.S.
