The Boone County Distilling Company has released its fi rst gin. The Ruckers & Gaines American Dry Gin Spring Release is the fi rst of a planned seasonal line of gins and is made specifi cally with spring in mind. The gin is distilled by hand has a clean yet robust blend of botanicals, the distillery said. The gin is a "balanced union of crisp juniper and fresh citrus." "The mélange of spices also includes grapefruit, lemon peel, coriander, angelica root and lemongrass. Bright citrus, warm spices, and juniper blend together with a smooth and dry fi nish with zesty lemon notes," according to the distillery. The gin has been years in the making. Back in 2016, the company shared its interest in creating seasonal gins. “We are excited to bring this new spirit to our line-up. We have many customers who love our approach to bourbon and want to see our same approach in other spirits” co-founder Josh Quinn said in a statement. Why Ruckers & Gaines? Ruckers and Gaines were streets making a crossroads central to the Petersburg Distillery from which Boone County Distilling gets its name. At the beginning of each fall and spring season, Boone County will produce a new, limited release of seasonally-inspired gin. The Ruckers & Gaines American Dry Gin releases will only be available in the Boone County Distilling gift shop and select Northern Kentucky retailers.

Love thy neighbor is a lesson the Fugate brothers reinforced almost daily in Boone County with a simple, friendly wave from storefronts in Hebron. Seeing the brothers, Obie, 72, and Roy, 67, walking county roads, carrying their Bibles, was a regular sight, Petersburg resident Wanda Jackson said. “They would walk to Hebron, which was probably four or fi ve miles and they’d just sit out in front of the buildings and wave at people as they would go by,” Jackson said. “Everybody knew that they were good people,” she said. The brothers were known to enjoy dancing at Boone County’s fair, Jackson said. Waving and smiling at people passing by was their main entertainment. The brothers made their living farming their land. Jackson said they never asked for help. “They lived by a rough means, but they were happy and that was home to them,” Jackson said.
Tragedy strikes the brothers It was winter, and cold. The brothers lived together at a house on Garrison Creek Road. Police said a family member arrived at the Fugate brothers’ property to drop off fi rewood and found the men’s truck broken down and stuck in the mud in the long gravel driveway, a little over a half-mile from their house. The family member moved the See BROTHERS, Page 2A

Nearly 83,000 Northern Kentucky residents' water bills will increase this year and again in 2020. The Kentucky Public Service Commission approved Northern Kentucky Water District's request in a March 26 order for $6.2 million more in revenue over the next two years. The money will increase the water district's revenue by 11.6 percent to pay for replacing aging water pipes, pumps and treatment plants. The increase will be phased in over two years. The existing monthly residential customer fee will increase from $16.40 to $18.50 by 2020. The project cost included water main replacements in Edgewood (on fi ve streets), in Newport (seven streets) in Woodlawn (six streets) and on Burdsall Avenue in Fort Mitchell. ❚ More than two miles of water main line (ranging from two inches to four inches) was replaced with larger lines (ranging from six to eight inches) around the southern Kenton County city of Latonia Lakes. ❚ The 1872-built Ohio River pump station 2 in Campbell County was repaired at a cost of $2 million. ❚ A new Taylor Mill Water Treatment Plant for about $20 million. ❚ A 24-inch hydraulic line was built to improve water fl ows to the southern end of Kenton County along Ky. 17. Water fl ows were improved to a pump station near Richardson Road in anticipation of the need for capacity growth. Water fl ow was also improved to the industrial area around Ky. 17.
for funeral and burial costs, said Bill Mullins, owner of Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home in Hebron. The brothers had a little insurance and a family chipped in what they could, Mullins said. The wood farmhouse the Fugate brothers were trying to reach had limited electricity and no running water, Mullins said. “They lived in a little wooden house that some people would call a shack,” he said. “Everybody just loved those two brothers. They were just part of the fabric of our lives.”
‘Lots and lots of good people still in this area’ The donated money helped pay for a funeral service and burial in Petersburg Cemetery. There was enough to buy gravestone markers for each brother and another cemetery stone for a brother who preceded them in death. Most of the money was raised by word of mouth, Jackson said. “It shows there are lots and lots of good people still in this area,” she said. Sarah Brookbank contributed to this story.

Poll: Ky’s Matt Bevin most unpopular governor in US Scott Wartman Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Kentucky's Matt Bevin hasn't won many popularity contests after being elected governor in 2015. His publicized fi ghts with the teacher's unions over pensions and with people on social media has led to polls consistently ranking him as one of the least popular governors in the country. Bevin for the fi rst time snagged the bottom spot Thursday, April 25 in a poll released by Morning Consult, a nonpartisan polling fi rm based in Washing-
ton, D.C. The poll gives Democrats hope since Kentucky's Republican governor faces re-election campaign this year. Democrats will pick their candidate in a May 21 primary. Kentucky Democrats in the past 20 years have lost both houses of the state legislature and all but one statewide offi ce in Kentucky. Morning Consult's poll of Kentucky voters showed 33 percent approved of Bevin while 52 percent didn't. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus one percent.
The 19 percentage point gap was the largest among the nation's 50 governors. Bevin and Rhode Island's Democratic governor Gina Raimondo were the only governors in the poll who had half of the electorate who disapprove of them. The gap between Raimondo haters and supporters was much smaller than Bevin's, only 10 percentage points. As for Ohio, newly-elected Republican governor Mike DeWine fared OK. The poll showed 44 percent liked DeWine while 26 percent didn't.

Schools celebrate theatre at Cappies Gala on May 23 The ballots have been cast and the votes are in. On May 23 at the Aronoff Center for the Arts, local high school students will be recognized in a Tony’sstyle awards ceremony for their accomplishments in theatrical performance, technical theatre, and writing. The nominees have been announced at cincicap.com/nominees. The annual Cappies Gala, organized by the Cappies of Greater Cincinnati, celebrates the hard work of high school theatre departments across Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. This year, more than 150 student critics from 19 local high schools were involved in the local chapter of the international Critics and Awards Program. To complete the program, students must attend at least fi ve theatrical performances at other high schools and write constructive reviews. At the performance, the students participate in a teacher-led workshop where they learn the history and background of the show, participate in structured discussion

at cincicap.com/reviews). For the 20182019 season, more than 880 reviews were written by student critics. Cappies critics who completed the program requirements voted earlier this month on the students, ensembles, and technical crews they feel should be recognized at the annual Cappies Gala. Students nominated for a Cappie Award are in the top six in the region, a high honor in our community of exceptionally talented students. Nominees were announced to participating schools via social media as part of the organization’s fi rst annual Nominees’ Day Celebration, which also featured live “watch parties” as students waited for each category’s nominees to be shared. All the nominees can now be viewed at cincicap.com/nominees. At the 18th annual Cappies Gala, taking place at the Aronoff Center on Thursday, May 23 at 7 p.m., awards will be given across 42 technical, performing, and writing awards categories. Reserved tickets for family and
friends go on sale May 8 at the Cincinnati Arts Association box offi ce. For more information, call the Cincinnati Arts Association ticket offi ce at 513-6212787 [ARTS] or visit them on the web at CincinnatiArts.org. More information, as well as sponsorship and program advertising details, can be found at cincicap.com/gala. The Critics and Awards Program strives to recognize Greater Cincinnati’s talented community of young writers, performers, and technical crews. High school theatre and journalism students who participate in the Cappies program are trained as critics, attend shows at other schools, and write and publish reviews. At the end of the school year, the student critics vote to give awards to their fellow students for outstanding productions, group and individual performances, and achievements in technical categories. The Eastern Bypass was proposed as an alternative to building a new Interstate 71/75 Brent Spence Bridge. The Ohio Department of Transportation has until the end of the year to fi nish a report on the project. ENQUIRER FILE
We’re going to study the Eastern Bypass. Again.
ise, especially when it comes to job creation and economic development. Any job growth is typically shortterm, Tomer said, but the highway would remain a huge, long-term fi nancial burden. "You don't need wider roads or new roads for a state that's not growing," Tomer said. "That's not what Cincinnati's regional economy needs right now." Derek Bauman, a board member for the transit advocacy group All Aboard Ohio, said it doesn’t make sense to talk about building a new highway when the state already has such a backlog of maintenance. A lack of money for road and bridge maintenance was a big push behind Ohio's recent gas tax increase, with Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine saying it was a matter of life and death. “To me, it’s pretty clear," Bauman said. "All it is is just a giveaway to sprawl developers. It’s just bad on its face, and it doesn’t even deserve study.”

The transportation to-do list is long around here. There’s the “functionally obsolete” Brent Spence Bridge, the crumbling Western Hills Viaduct and the struggling bus system, which is running out of money and badly in need of a boost. Add to the list for 2019: The Eastern Bypass – a proposed outer loop around the current outer loop that could potentially help ease congestion and spur new development farther away from the city's core. There’s a mandate tucked into the transportation budget this year that requires the state to study the proposed bypass. The Ohio Department of Transportation has until the end of the year to submit a report to the legislature that includes: ❚ commentary on Kentucky’s bypass study, which was completed in 2017; ❚ details on how much Ohio assisted with Kentucky’s study; ❚ details on whatever steps ODOT is taking or needs to take to coordinate with Kentucky “to plan and construct the Eastern Bypass.” Depending on whom you ask, this is either a great idea or just one more example of wasting money on a pet project. An ODOT spokesman said the department will “complete the study, as required by law. It’s still way too early to say what the study will look like or how much it may cost.” For comparison, Kentucky’s study cost about $2.1 million.
What is it? The Eastern Bypass is a proposed four-lane highway that would go roughly 70 miles, connecting at Interstate 75 in Springboro and eventually reconnecting to I-75 at Crittenden in Grant County. Henry Fischer, chairman of Fischer Homes, fl oated the idea in an Enquirer op-ed back in January 2015. It was initially proposed as an alternative to building a new Brent Spence Bridge, but Kentucky’s study showed that won’t work. Kentucky’s report said that while the bypass is worthy of further consideration, it would not divert enough traffi c to eliminate the need for a new Brent Spence.
Who’s for it?
A screenshot from Kentucky's Brent Spence Strategic Corridor Study shows the proposed Eastern Bypass. SCREENSHOT
Who put it in the budget?
How much would the bypass cost?
Rep. Tom Brinkman, R-Mount Lookout, pushed to get the study included in this year’s transportation budget. He said it’s all about getting Ohio and Kentucky to work together. The bypass would be a multi-state project, so it doesn’t make sense to plan in isolation. “We have to force the transportation departments to talk together,” Brinkman said. “That’s what my bill is trying to do. Let’s discuss it.” Brinkman is still in favor of building a new Brent Spence Bridge, but he thinks the bypass should come fi rst and that the new Brent Spence should be smaller. He counts the fact that the study made it through the budget process and was signed into law as a sign of support from his colleagues. “That’s a lot of support right there,” he said. “I’m pretty excited about it.”
Kentucky’s study showed the bypass would cost about $5.3 billion, with much of that due to infl ation during the decade-plus it would take to build the new highway. That estimate assumes construction would start in 2029 and that the bypass would be open in 2032. Some bypass supporters, however, say that estimate is too high. The Cincy Eastern Bypass website says the highway could cost $1.1 billion, but that estimate does not take into account infl ation.
Who’s against it? Warren County Commissioner Dave Young has called the bypass project a “red herring” in the past, and Adie Tomer, a fellow with the Washington, D.C.based Brookings Institution, said that highway expansions in general are not bearing the fruit their advocates prom-
Fischer, who fi rst proposed the bypass, did not respond to a request for comment, and neither did the Clermont County Board of Commissioners, where the idea has gained at least some traction in the past. Mark Policinski, Chief Executive Offi cer of the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments, said he welcomes “any study of a major economic development project.” The Brent Spence Bridge is the immediate need, Policinski said, but an outer loop such as the bypass could be worthy of long-term consideration. Matth Toebben, founder of Toebben Companies, however, thinks the bypass needs to be priority No. 1. Toebben said the new highway would create hundreds of thousands of jobs and lead to billions of dollars in new development. But if we wait, he said, it'll be too late. "It's so important to realize that if you don't build the bypass now, the right-ofway will be bought up, and there will be no land available on either side of the Ohio River," he said. "It would be a shame to pass up the opportunity to build the bypass fi rst and then the bridge, if necessary."
Didn’t we already do this study? Yes, but that was in Kentucky. Brinkman said this is Ohio’s counterpart to that study and a way of forcing the states to work together.

Sports NKU basketball coach Darrin Horn:
‘Together we’re gonna do this’ Adam Bau Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
For about three years from 2012-2015, Darrin Horn didn’t coach basketball. For the man Northern Kentucky University introduced last Thursday as the sixth men’s basketball head coach in program history, that break was the fi rst time since 1995 that Horn wasn’t on a bench and the fi rst time since 2003 where he wasn’t a head coach. “I was out of coaching for three years doing television for ESPN and the SEC Network,” said Horn, who spent fi ve seasons as Western Kentucky’s head coach, then four seasons as head coach at South Carolina before his hiatus from coaching began. “I really enjoyed what I was doing but I missed the players. I missed impacting young people’s lives. I missed being a part of knowing that maybe we played a role in helping them be better for their future.” The opportunity to return to coaching arrived in 2015 at the University of Texas, which paved the way for NKU. “I’m a much better coach because of the time I spent away from the game,” said Horn, who then became emotional when speaking about whether or not he believed he would return to coaching someday. “Well, it’s funny how that works. Your fi rst year (away) you think you’re gonna get back, somebody’s gonna take you, (thinking) ‘I just got let go but pretty good track record overall, no NCAA issues, we graduate players,’ and then the phone doesn’t ring. “Then you get into your second year and by that point, my TV deal was getting going and I thought, ‘Well, maybe I’m gonna have to do this.’ And the third year, I thought, ‘I’m not getting back in.’ “I had a contract with ESPN. I was moving up in their company on the color side and the phone wasn’t ringing. I didn’t think I was gonna have an opporSee HORN, Page 2B

Horn’s Kentucky coaching, playing roots run deep John Fay Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Darrin Horn, the new Northern Kentucky University men's basketball coach, is coming home. Horn has no connection with NKU, and he comes to the Norse after a stint as an assistant at the University of Texas. But Horn’s roots in Kentucky run deep. Horn, 46, led Tates Creek High School, Lexington, to the state runnerup fi nish in the 1991 Kentucky High School Athletic Association tournament. He went on to play and then coach at Western Kentucky University. Between Tates Creek and Northern, Horn had stops as an assistant coach at WKU, Morehead State and Marquette, as head coach at WKU and South Carolina, and then as an assistant at Texas. “He deserves to be a head coach again,” said Georgia coach Tom Crean, who coached Horn at WKU and hired him at Marquette. “I think it’s a great hire for Northern Kentucky.” Indiana coach Archie Miller, who got his fi rst assistant job under Horn at WKU, agreed.
“He’s very competitive. Whether it’s pool, whether it’s Monopoly, whether it’s basketball, Darrin has to win. That’s what makes him a great coach.” Tom Crean
Georgia head coach
"Coach Horn is a great hire for NKU," Miller said. "He is a great competitor. His teams and staff really follow his lead. His recruiting background speaks for itself." Horn's coach at Tates Creek, Nolan Barger, is not surprised Horn ended up taking the coaching route. “Leadership,” Barger said. “He was always a good leader. He’s obviously a bright guy, a solid guy. He was a huge contributor to our state runner-up team. Darrin had a good relationship with all his teammates.”
Crean was an assistant at Western Kentucky when Horn was coming out of Tates Creek. “He was actually part of the fi rst recruiting class at Western Kentucky when I was with Ralph Willard,” Crean said. “So I recruited him and then coached him for four years.” As a player, Horn’s years at Western were probably the best run ever for the Hilltoppers. They won 20 games in each of Horn’s four years and made the NCAA tournament in three of them. They made Sweet 16 once and won a fi rst-round game in another year. Horn scored 1,115 points at WKU. Horn began his coaching career at Western immediately. He coached there as an assistant for two years before moving to Morehead State for two years and coaching under Kyle Macy (another Kentucky connection). Horn reunited with Crean when Crean got the job at Marquette. Horn was with Crean for Marquette’s Final Four run with Dwyane Wade in 2003. “He’s really good with details,” Crean
said. “But he understands the details inside the picture. He’s passionate. He’s very, very smart. He’s very competitive. Whether it’s pool, whether it’s Monopoly, whether it’s basketball, Darrin has to win. “That’s what makes him a great coach.” Horn went from Marquette back to his alma mater Western Kentucky as head coach after the Final Four run in 2003. He had an excellent fi ve-year run at Western. The Hilltoppers were 111-48 under him and made the Sweet 16 in 2008. Horn’s teams at Western played a lot like John Brannen’s team did at NKU. The Hilltoppers averaged 77 points a game and shot 47 percent in Horn’s tenure. "Style of play is something I have always loved about his teams," Miller said. "They play fast and the right way." Horn went from WKU to South Carolina, where he lasted only four seasons. He was fi red after going 60-63 and missing the NCAA tournament. Horn did some television work before returning as an assistant coach to Shaka Smart at Texas in 2015.

Why did Pat Kelsey-NKU deal fall apart? Fletcher Page
Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Last Tuesday afternoon, multiple sources with knowledge of the Northern Kentucky hiring process for the men’s basketball head coach position told The Enquirer Pat Kelsey would be the hire. It wasn’t a closed deal, those sources said, but the basics of an agreement were coming together. The negotiation, however, broke down and quickly ended. Just a short time later, it became clear Kelsey would remain at Winthrop as the Norse instead announced former South Carolina and Western Kentucky head coach Darrin Horn as the program’s next leader. So what happened? Kelsey to NKU made perfect sense, to vested insiders and those tracking from outside the program that’s made two NCAA Tournament appearances since earning full-time Division I status three years ago. He grew up in nearby Cincinnati, his family has deep ties to the school (his sister Katie Kelsey-Cluxton, brother-inlaw Paul Cluxton and brother Mike “Walt” Kelsey are in the NKU athletics Hall of Fame) and it appeared he would be line for a signifi cant raise. Former NKU coach John Brannen, who left for the University of Cincinnati, was set to make $400,000 annually if he had continued at NKU. Kelsey’s base pay at Winthrop, where he has a 139-83 record in seven seasons, is $227,150 annually with $75,000 in potential bonus money. Kelsey was considered the top candidate soon after news broke that Brannen was leaving. And he maintained the lead to last Tuesday afternoon, after interviews with multiple candidates were conducted, on the phone, on campus in Highland Heights, Kentucky and in Atlanta, where the assisting fi rm Parker Executive Search is based. An NKU spokesperson for the athletics department declined to comment on

specifi cs of the hiring process. And a spokesperson for the Winthrop basketball program did not return an email asking if Kelsey would be available for comment. But according to multiple sources with information about last Tuesday’s proceedings, the deal between Kelsey and NKU fell apart because of details other than salary.
Specifi cally, according to the sources, the two sides could not agree on terms of a buyout in the event Kelsey left for another coaching job. So, later in the afternoon last Tuesday after what appeared to be a done deal, NKU ended talks and moved on to Horn, who for the past four seasons was an assistant at Texas. What looked to be all but done ended

tunity. That’s why I was so grateful for (Texas head coach) Shaka Smart and the opportunity he gave me to get back in the game because this is who I am. “I’m a ball coach, man. It’s what I do. I love being around these guys. I love the locker room. I love competing. I love everything about it so the opportunity to do that again was huge.” There’s no surefi reway to predict success at the Division I level of college basketball. There are subtle hints and more obvious themes Smart had known Horn for a long time. Coaching circles are small in college basketball and everyone knows everyone. Smart told The Enquirer last Thursday that Horn has an undeniable ability to lead young men. “One thing that really separates Darrin is his family,” said Smart. “He’s got a phenomenal high-character, high-level family and I think one way that impacts him as a coach is having a son that is a high school basketball player and I’m sure an aspiring college basketball player. I think that helps him coach college guys because he knows that everyone that we’re coaching is someone’s son. He knows how that feels and how important that is. He treats people the way that he would want people to treat his son, Walker, and I think that’s gonna go a long way for him at NKU.” It didn’t take long in Horn’s press conference Thursday to echo what Smart said about him earlier in the day. One of the fi rst things Horn said at the podium was, “Before I go any further, I want to recognize my family. I’ll try to hold it together. Coaches’ families make a lot of sacrifi ces and go through an awful lot and they’re a huge part of what we do simply because we believe

that players become a part of our family. Guys (NKU’s players present at the press conference), you won’t get rid of me after you graduate. You’ve got me and Carla (Horn’s wife) and our kids for the rest of your life.” Horn grew up in Glasgow, Kentucky. He played at Tates Creek High School. It was part of what drew him to NKU. “Basketball matters here,” said Horn. “It matters in this area. It matters in this state. It matters in this program. I can go back almost 30 years now and tell you about playing in the state tournament at Rupp Arena on a Wednesday afternoon and 18,000 people show up to watch a high school basketball game. That’s not normal, people. You know that, right?” That wasn’t the only reason he was drawn to the Norse.
“A lot of people say, ‘Why Northern Kentucky?’ Because I’ve had other options to get back into coaching as a head coach, multiple opportunities, but I passed on them all,” Horn said. “Why do you jump on Northern Kentucky University? It’s pretty simple: winning. “That’s what we’re all here for. This is a program that has won. It has a tradition of winning; it’s winning now. It can continue to win and win even bigger. “Let me tell you something, the nation knows about Norse basketball. My phone, fi rst night, had over 200 texts in a matter of hours talking about, ‘Great move, great job, great program.’ People know who Northern Kentucky is. We’re knocking on the door of being somebody to reckon with. But we don’t want to just knock on that door. We don’t
with a diff erent outcome. “I am pleased to welcome Darrin, along with his wife, Carla, and children, Caroline and Walker, to Northern Kentucky University,” said NKU athletics director Ken Bothof in a statement Tuesday night. “Throughout the hiring process, it became clear that Darrin was the right fi t to lead the Norse men’s basketball program.”
want to just open it up a little bit. We want to blow it off the hinges in taking the next step with this basketball program.” Whenever a new coach is hired, the conversation, at some point, turns to the new coach’s style of play. “Everyone always asks about style of play,” said Horn. “You wanna know what style of play we’re going to play? The one that gives us the best chance to win. In a couple of words, I would say, ‘Aggressive, attacking on both ends of the fl oor.’ Obviously, that starts on the defensive end for me but we’re gonna do what we do to suit our personnel to be the best team that we can.” Horn said the three cornerstones of his program are simple: Graduation, conditioning and player development. “When a guy fi nishes his eligibility here, he’s gonna graduate from Northern Kentucky University. That’s gonna happen. You know how I know that’s gonna happen? Because every single player that’s fi nished his eligibility under me in nine years as a head coach has graduated.” Before he took questions, Horn ended his prepared statement with a challenge to NKU’s fan base. “I’m gonna end with this: This is a beautiful building, a big-time arena, a jewel in college basketball. There’s no question about that,” he said. “Our home record last year was 17-1, which is outstanding, but I’ve gotta tell you this as a challenge and together we’re gonna do this. All anybody ever tells me when I ask about this is it’s a great building. That it’s a beautiful facility. That it’s one of the best in college basketball, but nobody’s told me it’s a hard place to play. The record would indicate that the team is hard to play against. The atmosphere, the fan base, is it full every night to the point where people fear coming to our arena to play? That’s what I want people to say about this place.”

Rotary Club of Florence names Teachers of the Year FLORENCE – Tiff any Westhoff uses 21st century technology to motivate students to want to read, instead of avoiding it. When students in Samantha Richards’ kindergarten class look into a “Meet the Author” box, they see refl ections of themselves in a mirror. Trisha Ridener knows the 500-plus students in her school by name and helps them select books that match their interests with their reading levels. Nikole Mahoney sponsors her school’s Lego Robotics Team and organized a regional competition to give more students in the area a chance to compete. The Rotary Club of Florence named Westhoff , Richards, Ridener and Mahoney as 2019 Teachers of the Year at a ceremony April 22 at the Hilton Cincinnati Airport Hotel. Each received a $250 award from Heritage Bank and banner to display at their respective school. “You do make a big diff erence in society,” Shawn Carroll, master of ceremonies for the event, told the teachers. “You help folks get on the path to success.” MORE ON THE AWARD WINNERS: Tiff any Westhoff , 9th Grade English Teacher, Boone County High School A teacher for 17 years, Westhoff relishes helping students with the transition to high school. She adapts her teaching strategies to connect with changing standards and to keep pace with innovations in technology. And she does so in ways that both captivate and motivate students. “She has the unique ability to infl uence them and get them excited about the importance of the world that reading and literature can open to them,” said Bart Pindela, who presented the award. “Mrs. Westhoff creates excitement and engagement with her students through incorporating technology into her classroom.” She spends a lot of time during school breaks and after school mentoring students to keep them from falling behind. In addition, Westhoff went back to school to earn a certifi cate in counseling to enable her to better meet student needs. Samantha Richards, Collaborative Kindergarten Teacher, Erpenbeck Elementary School A kindergarten teacher for 16 years, Richards works with 5- and 6-year-olds “with twice the energy and

half the time to learn everything,” according to one of her nominators. Yet, she does so with great success with both a morning class and an afternoon class each day. In addition, she teaches all the students with special needs. “She knows the way (students) feel about school and themselves begins in her classroom,” said presenter Rhonda Chisenhall. “She does everything in her power to make sure they leave her not only with the skills necessary to succeed in fi rst grade, but also with the mindset that they can accomplish anything they set out to do in their lives.” Richards serves on the district writing committee and district curriculum leader committee. She also has mentored more than a dozen Boone County teachers in work with the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP). Trisha Widener, Librarian/Media Specialist, Walton-Verona Elementary School As facilitator of the accelerated reading program, Widener interacts with virtually every student in the
school. She teaches fi ve classes per day and leads a small reading group. A 17-year veteran of teaching, she helps other teachers select books, movies and other instructional materials for other teachers. “Trisha is the embodiment of the colleague every person wants to have by their side,” said presenter Pat Gutzeit, quoting from a letter of recommendation. “She sacrifi ces her time and talents continually, while being a constant positive infl uence in our building. “Her offi cial role at Walton Verona Elementary School is the media specialist. However, she willingly steps into so many more positions each and every day.” Widener serves on the Positive Behavior Intervention Team. She assists with book fairs and other PTA events. She also helped write a grant for a program that helps select families learn how to better teach their own children to read. high school and works with students who need help before school, after school and during planning periods. Her passion for teaching students how to solve problems led her to begin sponsoring the Lego Robotics Team in 2013-14, her second year at the school. She proposed the regional competition to enable local schools to compete closer to home. The underlying theme in her eight years of teaching, seven at Walton-Verona, has been her total dedication to students and willingness “to give her time all the time in her tutoring,” said presenter Dennis McEvoy. He cited an endorsement from a former student to illustrate her impact on students.

“You not only taught me mathematical equations and numbers, but also made me see a purpose in everything I do,” the student wrote. “You taught me how to have self-confi dence in myself and the ability to believe I can do bigger and better things.” Mahoney came up with the idea for a two-week ACT Boot Camp this year. She assists the Data Team Committee and Technology Committee. She also is serving a fi ve-year term on the School Based Council and is helping juniors plan the Junior-Senior Prom. State Sen. John Schickel (R-Union) presented each of the teachers Kentucky Colonel and Kentucky Senate citations. County Commissioner Charles Kenner issued proclamations naming April 22 as each of the teacher’s day.
