Presidents Inn restaurant ends its term in Burlington Nancy Daly Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
BURLINGTON – It was hoped the Presidents Inn would offer fine dining in the 1840 building formerly known as Central House Diner at 5991 N. Jefferson St. in the Boone County seat. And it did, at a spot on the National Register of Historic Places, a little off the beaten track from the county’s bustling suburbs. But, in a Friday statement on its Facebook page, the restaurant’s owners announced an end of an era. “It is with bittersweet sadness that we announce that this evening, Nov. 23, we will be closing the doors of Presidents Inn here in Burlington for the last time. The last three years have been truly amazing for us, and those happy memories will forever stay deeply dear to our hearts. We hope to see you soon and wish all of you the very best in life and its adventures. “The Carver, Erion, and Sandy Family” In 2015 owners said the restaurant would offer a warm, welcoming environment for family and friends to

FLORENCE – A gift to the city of Florence will be highlighted at the Dec. 4 Christmas tree lighting, a tradition that is moving from the Florence Government Center campus to a corner on Mall Road’s busy shopping hub. Land at 8001 Mall Road, adjacent to Snuggy’s Mattress Express, has been converted to a brick Florence Community Plaza. The city was directed to create a community gathering space there by the individual who donated the corner in 2016. Amid the “hustle and bustle” along Mall Road, Mayor Diane E. Whalen said, the plaza “gives people an opportunity to take a break and stop and recognize the reasons that we’re all there.” The donated parcel is dedicated to those who serve and protect the city, as visitors to the 6-8 p.m. tree lighting will see. installed at the plaza last week. At the base of each are bricks engraved with the names of department members who have retired. “Florence employees take pride in enhancing the quality of life in this community through our many services. I feel the plaza gives back by honoring those commitments, sacrifices, and selfless actions,” said Eric Hall, the city’s Public Services director.
Statues of a police officer, a firefighter and a public works employee were installed at the plaza last week.
And besides kicking off the holiday season, “We just want to to take time to say thank you” to the life squads, those who plow snow and patch potholes, and to the police, Whalen said. City officials said they are grateful for the opportunity afforded by this donation to create the Florence Community Plaza. See PLAZA, Page 2A

FLORENCE – Olde Kentucky Market opened inside Florence Mall before Black Friday with a specialty fish restaurant, cafe and cupcake experience, along with a specialty olive store. Afishionados cooks up gourmet seafood and fish lunches and dinners to eat at tables in the market or take home. The fish shop was previously part of Friendly Market, according to the Afishionados website. Memorie Makers Cafe & Cupcakery and Kentucky Olive are part of Old Kentucky Market, too. The market is at 2164 Mall Road, Florence. The storefront market is on the second level of Florence Mall close to Sears and immediately adjacent to Hannoush Jewelers.

gather “where Washington meets Jefferson in Historic Burlington, Kentucky.” The restaurant seemed to have fun playing off its political theme, creating meals named after former presidents and having get-togethers on big election nights. Nancy Carver told the Boone County Recorder in 2015 the dinner menu’s distinguishing feature would be “savory Kentucky bites,” full of flavor and innovation. Some examples include bourbon and kiwi-glazed salmon, crab cakes, lamb sausage-stuffed bell peppers, and the “Bluegrass meatloaf ” made of beef, pork and lamb. A presidential theme carried over to menu items such as Reagan’s Ribeye and Taft’s Dagwood served at FDR’s Sandwich Station and the Laura Bush Children’s Selection, featuring both Chelsea’s Chicken Tenders and Jenna’s Texas Burger.

Baby fever strikes again. Another photo shoot of first responders and their baby boom is making the rounds on social media. Seven Kentucky State Police troopers recently became parents and had a photo shoot to celebrate. "Kentucky is blessed with the watchful eyes of the Kentucky State Police for seven days a week, 365 days a year!" photographer Vicky Puckett posted on her Facebook page. "This year some of our officers were blessed with 7 miracles of their own!" Puckett told media outlets that wives of the troopers "really wanted to show the softer side of the police officers."

Man charged in white nationalist rally planning to argue self-defense claim Denise Lavoie
ASSOCIATED PRESS
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — An Ohio man charged with killing a woman during a white nationalist rally in Virginia plans to argue that he believed he was acting in self-defense when he drove his car into a crowd of counter protesters. A lawyer for James Alex Fields Jr. offered a glimpse of the defense strategy as jury selection began Monday in Charlottesville Circuit Court. Attorney John Hill told a group of prospective jurors the jury will hear evidence that Fields “thought he was acting in self-defense.” Hill asked if any of the prospective jurors believe that using violence in
self-defense is never appropriate. The jury trial in Charlottesville Circuit Court is scheduled to last for 18 days through Dec. 13, according to court records. The “Unite the Right” rally on Aug. 12, 2017, was organized in part to protest the planned removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. Prosecutors say Fields, who is a Boone County native, killed counter protester Heather Heyer when he struck her and several others with his car. Fields lived in a Florence, condominium with his mother. Police responded nine times from November 2010 through February 2013 to the condominium, according to records. Fields’ mother, Sandra Bloom, called at least twice to report her son was attacking or threatening her.

A synthetic ice skating rink has opened at the Ark Encounter. ANSWERS IN GENESIS/PROVIDED
Ark Encounter opens ‘Glice’ skating rink Cameron Knight
Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
The Ark Encounter has installed a synthetic ice skating rink with the help of Hobby Lobby and Pure Flix. Answers in Genesis, the parent organization behind the Williamstown, Kentucky, ark attraction, said the rink is the biggest of its kind in the country. It's nearly the length of a football field. The Switzerland-based Glice company made the rink. Hobby Lobby and Pure Flix, a Christian-based video
streaming service, sponsored the project. The rink will remain open until Dec. 30. It will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Glice rinks require special Glice skates, which are provided by the Ark Encounter with the cost of a skating session. Whale-shaped riding toys are available for younger children. Visitors can skate for as long as they want during one continuous session for $5. The Ark Encounter has other Christmas attractions as well, including a heated petting zoo. More information is available at ArkEncounter.com.

Wine-soaked raisins a simple, sophisticated treat Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld
Sometimes the simplest recipes are the best. The Chardonnay-soaked golden raisins I’m sharing fit that description. Not only is it easy, it’s quite sophisticated and morphs from appetizer to gift from the kitchen. I had a Kentucky reader concerned about chocolate with a whitish coating that developed on top. “What is it and should I toss it?” he asked. Read on to find out.
Readers want to know What is that white or gray stuff on chocolate? Is it safe to eat? First, the chocolate is perfectly safe to eat, it’s just not the prettiest kid on the block. White flecks, spots, streak, gray splotches are signs of either what’s called a “fat” or “sugar” bloom. Both are natural occurrences. Here’s why: Fat bloom: Occurs usually from temperature changes. Looks like a waxy whitish coating that forms due to cocoa butter or milk fats moving through and winding up crystalizing on the surface. You’ll see gray splotches on the chocolate. (It occurs more in less expensive chocolates that haven’t been tempered as well as the more expensive ones. Tempering is a process that stabilizes the sugars and fats). Sugar bloom:Occurs usually from moisture in the package drawing out the sugars, making them crystalize on the surface. This bloom is usually dry and might make your chocolate feel a bit sandy or gritty. Preventing fat/sugar bloom: Store chocolate in a cool environment. Some experts say the best temperature is 64 degrees. I have stored mine in the door of the refrigerator and in the pantry with equal success. Fixing fat/sugar bloom: No worries. If you don’t want to eat it, just melt it down. (I had to do this with some chocolate clusters I made).

room temperature. Work to cool them by stirring or spreading them out and then refrigerate or freeze. Label and date all leftovers. Eat or freeze any remaining leftovers within three to four days. Consume or freeze gravy within two days. Plan to use all leftovers. Most frozen leftovers should be used within a few weeks to a couple of months for the best quality. Once you are ready to eat your leftovers, reheat them so the internal temperature of the food reaches 165 degrees F. Check the temperature with a food thermometer. Safely reheat soups, sauces and gravies by bringing them to a boil. When reheating in a microwave, make sure there are no cold spots in the food where bacteria could survive. Stir and rotate food for even heating. Enjoy the wonderful foods of the season but plan so you are not overwhelmed by the leftovers. And, remember, sharing remaining foods with family and friends can be a great way to manage leftovers and feel good by giving to others. Extension Notes Diane Mason Guest columnist
The holiday feast may be over but there may be food leftover lingering in the refrigerator. While cold turkey or ham sandwiches or a hot turkey soup may use up some of the food that is left, there may be other items still waiting to be eaten. Leftovers may be taking over the refrigerator. Using leftovers in a timely manner is a great way to stretch the budget and provide quick meals for the family. Using leftovers can reduce the work load and save time and energy, too. However, leftovers have a shelf life for safety. They must be stored promptly and properly to ensure they are safe for later use and that they are not the cause of foodborne illness. Follow these tips to ensure your leftovers are safe to eat: Take some time before the holiday event to make room in the refrigerator and freezer for anticipated foods and leftovers. Refrigerate leftovers within two hours of the food sitting at room temperature. Bacteria grows best at temperatures between 40 and 140 degrees F. Use an appliance thermometer to make sure your refrigerator is set between 35 and 40 degrees F. For quicker cooling, divide leftovers into small portions in shallow containers. Stir foods to help them cool faster and do not over pack the storage containers. Do not allow leftovers to cool on the counter to

Sports Walton-Verona falls to Mayfield 38-7 in state semifinals VERONA, KY. - The Walton-Verona faithful felt like this could be their year for the state title game, only to see the Bearcats fall short of that goal by one game with a 38-7 defeat to Mayfield. Walton-Verona’s defense held Mayfield in check for most of the first quarter until the Cardinals drove down the field with a 20-yard catch by Connor Guthrie. That pass put Mayfield inside the 10yard line. Two plays later on third and eight, The Cardinals were at the eightyard line when Walton-Verona’s Garret Jones tackled Kent Trey Matthews short of the first down, keeping the Cardinals to a field goal. With 6:48 left in the second quarter, Walton-Verona began to bend when, Mayfield’s head coach Joe Morris dialed up run-sweep by receiver Alonzo Daniel, who shifted his way down the right sideline for 34-yard score to make it 10-0. Walton-Verona threatened to score late in the second on a fourth and four at the Mayfield 22-yard line. Quarterback Travis Brauer faced im-
mediate pressure before being sacked, turning it over on downs. This would be the closest that the host Walton-Verona would come to cutting into Mayfield’s lead. Walton Verona Coach Jeff Barth could not find an answer to stop the Cardinals attack. “They’re a great team, we knew that we were going to have to play an A-plus game”, Barth said. By the time the third quarter began, the Bearcats were down 31-0, all they could do now was play for pride. With three minutes to go in the fourth, Walton-Verona fans got a chance to celebrate a moral victory when Tyler Wagner sprinted through the hole, almost being tripped up by a Mayfield defender, for a 76-yard score. The loss was tough for a Walton-Verona program that’s been in existence for only 11 seasons, with has room to build on their experience. “We are proud of what we were able to accomplish and obviously we got some room to grow if we want to make it to the state championship,” Barth said.

The Cincinnati Enquirer would like to introduce the 2018-2019 All-Enquirer preseason basketball teams, a new tradition to kick off the hoops seasons in Ohio and Northern Kentucky. The players were chosen by the high school staff based on statistics, strength of competition and history with their varsity teams.

ACE Hardware presents Master Provisions with gift ACE Hardware in Independence presented Master Provisions with a check for $3,000, the proceeds of their October customer donation program to fight hunger in Northern Kentucky. ACE Hardware owner Bill Winegardner delivered the check to the staff of Master Provisions at their Florence facility. During the month of October, customers at the ACE store on Declaration Drive in Independence, were given the opportunity to make a point-of-sale gift to Master Provisions as they checked out. Displays throughout the store showed how Master Provisions is involved in feeding the hungry in Northern Kentucky. “The staff and customers of our store are happy to support Master Provisions and their work in hunger relief,” said Bill Winegardner, owner of the Independence store. “There is a tremendous need here in our own community and I’m proud of the way our team stepped up to help.”
Master Provisions President Roger Babik noted that as many as one in six people in our region experience hunger at some time during the year. “So far in 2018, Master Provisions has made over 3.6 million pounds of food available to about 125 nonprofits who feed the hungry,” Babik said. “We provide food to soup kitchens, shelters, neighborhood pantries and other organizations so they can focus on their missions to help people in need.” Master Provisions receives fresh surplus food from area wholesalers and distributes it to organizations who provide hunger relief. In addition to these organizations, Master Provisions partners with Isaiah House Ministries to provide food and logistical support for two mobile food pantries held on the last Saturday of each month, one in Ludlow and one in Covington. NOTICE Please take notice that Duke Energy Kentucky, Inc. has applied to the Kentucky Public Service Commission for approval to revise its Demand Side Management (DSM) rate for gas service and electric service for residential and commercial customers. Duke Energy Kentucky’s current monthly DSM rate for residential gas customers is ($0.040856) per hundred cubic feet and for non-residential gas customers is $0.000000 per hundred cubic feet. Duke Energy Kentucky’s current monthly DSM rate for residential electric customers is $0.003035 per kilowatthour and for non-residential customers is $0.005091 per kilowatt-hour for distribution service and $0.000463 per kilowatt-hour for transmission service. Duke Energy Kentucky seeks approval to revise these rates as follows: Duke Energy Kentucky’s monthly DSM rate for residential gas customers would increase to ($0.018491) per hundred cubic feet and for non-residential gas customers would remain at $0.000000 per hundred cubic feet. Duke Energy Kentucky’s monthly DSM rate for residential electric customers would decrease to ($0.000061) per kilowatt-hour and for non-residential customers would decrease to $0.005024 per kilowatt-hour for distribution service and would increase to $0.000637 per kilowatthour for transmission service. The rate contained in this notice is the rate proposed by Duke Energy Kentucky. However, the Public Service Commission may order a rate to be charged that differs from this proposed rate. Such action may result in a rate for consumers other than the rate in this notice. The foregoing rates reflect a proposed decrease in electric revenues of approximately ($4.56) million or (1.39%) over current total electric revenues and an increase in gas revenues of approximately $1.29 million or 1.28% over current total gas revenues. A typical residential gas customer using 70 ccf in a month will see an increase of $1.57 or 2.2%. A typical residential electric customer using 1000 kWh in a month will see a decrease of $3.35 or (3.5%). A typical nonresidential electric customer using 40 kilowatts and 14,000 kWh will see a decrease of $1.06 or (0.1%). A nonresidential customer served at transmission voltage using 10,000 kilowatts and 4,000,000 kWh will see an increase of $787.94 or 0.3%. Non-residential gas customers will see no change in their bills from this application. Any corporation, association, body politic or person may by motion within thirty (30) days after publication or mailing of notice of the proposed rate changes, submit a written request to intervene to the Public Service Commission, 211 Sower Boulevard, P.O. Box 615, Frankfort, Kentucky 40602, and shall set forth the grounds for the request including the status and interest of the party. The intervention may be granted beyond the thirty (30) day period for good cause shown. Written comments regarding the proposed rate may be submitted to the Public Service Commission by mail or through the Public Service Commission’s website. A copy of this application filed with the Public Service Commission is available for public inspection at Duke Energy Kentucky’s office at 4580 Olympic Boulevard, Erlanger, Kentucky 41018 and on its website at http://www.duke-energy.com. This filing and any other related documents can be found on the Public Service Commission’s website at http://psc.ky.gov.
