FLORENCE – Businesses renting space inside Friendly Market are scrambling to find new homes after Heritage Bank foreclosed on the Florence area property east of the I-75 Mount Zion exit. Friendly Market LLC, started in 2013 as a place for independent food sellers under one roof, will be no more soon. Heritage Bank purchased the market at 10050 Norbotten Drive, valued at $900,000, for $1 on Sept. 14, according to property records. Murphy's Quality Meats owner Tim Murphy is among the final two tenants along with honey-producer Crigger Farm owned by Keith and Lori Crigger. "We're also looking for a new home," Lori Crigger said. The market touted nine tenants in a 2015 Community Recorder article. Crigger Farm hasn't found a new home yet. Most of their customers come from Boone County, she said. "There's no last date," Crigger said. "It's kind of month-to-month." Murphy said he will stay at Friendly Market through Christmas despite being close to agreeing on leasing space elsewhere. The retired Newport police officer purchased the former Butcher Betties meat business in November 2015 that was in the market. His catering and local farm-raised meat business has done well, Murphy said. "Then, the building goes into foreclosure and I've got to move," he said. "It kind of throws a wrench in my plans." Murphy originally hoped to join former Friendly Market tenants Afishionados, Memorie Makers Cafe & Cupcakery and Kentucky Olive Oil at a new location in Florence Mall. The three food destinations reopened on Black Friday in Florence Mall as Olde Kentucky Market on the second level close to the former Sears store. Murphy said he plans to open at a place where he can add sit-down dining offerings include burgers, Philadelphiastyle cheesesteaks, and fries. He plans to expand into vegetable produce sales as well.

BURLINGTON – Boone County is looking to start a capital campaign to raise funds to build a new animal shelter. The Fiscal Court voted 3-0 on Nov. 27 to enter a contract with consultant Convergent Nonprofit Solutions for the development of a new animal shelter. The initial phase of the work performed by the firm will be to assess giving capacity and determine how best to proceed with a campaign. The county will work with the firm to identify the most successful course moving forward with fundraising. Assistant County Administrator Matthew Webster said no tax dollars See SHELTER, Page 2A

"It was a great concept, though I wish it would have worked out," he said of Friendly Market. Murphy said he wishes all market tenants could have stayed together.

He's thankful for Heritage Bank's support after the building's sale. "Heritage was gracious enough to let us stay open," Murphy said. "They could have just put locks on the doors."

ACE Hardware’s gift helps Master Provisions feed hungry people FLORENCE – ACE Hardware in Independence presented Master Provisions with a check for $3,000, the proceeds of their October customer donation program to fight hunger in Northern Kentucky. ACE Hardware owner Bill Winegardner delivered the check to the staff of Master Provisions at their Florence facility. During the month of October, customers at the ACE store on Declaration Drive in Independence were given the opportunity to make a point-of-sale gift to Master Provisions as they checked out. Displays throughout the store showed how Master Provisions is involved in feeding the hungry in Northern Kentucky. “The staff and customers of our store are happy to support Master Provisions and their work in hunger relief,” Winegardner said. “There is a tremendous need here in our own community and I’m proud of the way our team stepped

will be used to obtain the services of the fundraising firm to conduct the initial phase or future phase of a campaign. “Privately donated funds will be utilized for this project,” he said. “Construction would be a combination of privately raised and public funds.” Although an exact fundraising goal has yet to be set, Webster initially expects the $2 million to $3 million range. “The care of the animals is a primary concern in looking toward a more modern facility,” Webster said. “The design for a new shelter will meet modern standards which will benefit the animals in a

up to help.” Master Provisions President Roger Babik noted as many as one in six people in our region experience hunger at some time during the year. “So far in 2018, Master Provisions has made over 3.6 million pounds of food available to about 125 nonprofits who feed the hungry,” Babik said. “We provide food to soup kitchens, shelters, neighborhood pantries and other organizations so they can focus on their missions to help people in need.” Master Provisions receives fresh surplus food from area wholesalers and distributes it to organizations who provide hunger relief. In addition to these organizations, Master Provisions partners with Isaiah House Ministries to provide food and logistical support for two mobile food pantries held on the last Saturday of each month, one in Ludlow and one in Covington. number of ways including stress reduction, disease prevention, better ventilation and separation of intake and adoptions.” Although too soon to be determined, a concept design is calling for an 18,000square-foot building. The planned shelter would have separate intake and adoption areas, adequate quarantine and parvo wards, private counseling room, kennels designed to reduce stress and capabilities for enhanced interaction with potential adopters. An exact location has not been confirmed, Webster said, but the county has identified potential sites and is exploring options with respect to the final location. “The existing facility would be repurposed for a public use,” Webster said.

“This is part of the public works campus and is situated between facilities that service the parks department.“ The current animal shelter is at 5643 Idlewild Road, Burlington. The Boone County Animal Shelter intake data varies year to year. On average, the shelter cares for 2,500 to 3,000 animals per year. Boone County does not euthanize healthy animals that do not have behavioral issues. In 2017, only 9 percent of animals were euthanized. The shelter strives to be at or above a 90 percent live release rate. Webster said the analysis of the shelter and planning for next steps have been in process since 2014. Judge-executive Gary Moore is excited about the possibility of a new shelter. “Last year, national experts evaluat-

ed our Animal Shelter and found that while our Animal Control Staff is doing a great job, in fact, in their words ‘operating as a national example’, our Animal Control facility is aging and has deficiencies,” Moore said. “To build a new facility that will meet current and future needs, we will need both significant private investment and public support.”

Edible gifts fit for a party Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld

Reality hit me yesterday when I moved the gourds and pumpkins into the garage to winter over for seeds and removed the stalks of broom corn decorating the fence row. Later, the kids came over and helped string outdoor Christmas lights on the trees. Yes, Christmas is coming up fast! I wanted to share a couple of really good, tried and true recipes for your holiday party or for giving as homemade gifts. Maybe you’d like to try the hot fudge peppermint sauce. It originated in Gourmet magazine and took off from there as it won fans. If you’re in the mood for savory with a bit of a kick, take some time to make the curried party mix. It’s from Janet Hontanosas, a Symmes township reader. Janet and I taught cooking classes for years, and the party mix was a student favorite. Rita Nader Heikenfeld is an herbalist, educator and author. Find her blog online at Abouteating.com. Email her at rita@com munitypress.com with “Rita’s kitchen” in the subject line.

Hot curried party mix Pack these into Chinese takeout containers for gift giving. Ingredients

2 teaspoons sugar Up to 3⁄4 teaspoon cayenne, to taste ⁄4 teaspoon salt

1

6 cups Chex cereals (rice, whole grain and corn) 2 cups sesame sticks 2 cups small pretzels 1 cup pecans 1 cup roasted peanuts 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 generous tablespoon soy sauce 11⁄2 tablespoons curry powder

Gourmet magazine published this hot fudge peppermint sauce years ago, and it has since become a favorite. RITA HEIKENFELD FOR THE COMMUNITY PRESS

Similar to what Williams Sonoma used to sell. This recipe calls for Dutch processed cocoa. Sometimes it’s called Dutched or European style cocoa. It differs from regular cocoa since Dutch is treated with an alkali to neutralize its acidity. What this does is smooths and mellows the cocoa flavor and darkens the color. If all you have is regular cocoa, go ahead and use that.

Crushed candy canes, for serving (optional)

⁄4 teaspoon real peppermint extract, or to taste

Ingredients

Instructions Preheat oven to 250. Toss together the first 5 ingredients. Melt the butter with soy sauce over low heat. Whisk in remaining ingredients. Drizzle butter mixture over cereal mixture, tossing well. Spread in shallow roasting pan. Bake 45-60 minutes and cool completely before storing at room temperature, covered, up to 1 month. Makes 12 cups.

CUSTOMER APP!"#IATI%N

Makes about 2 cups

Instructions In a 11⁄2 to 2-quart heavy saucepan, bring cream, syrup, sugar, cocoa, salt and half the chocolate to a boil. Reduce to a low simmer and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in remaining chocolate, butter and extract and stir until smooth. Cool the sauce to warm before serving it so that it can thicken up.

⁄3 cup whipping cream

Tip: Make ahead

⁄2 cup light corn syrup

Sauce keeps in fridge for two weeks. Reheat gently before serving, so that it is still thick but just loose enough to pour.

2 1

⁄3 cup packed dark brown sugar

1

⁄4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, Dutch-processed if possible

1

⁄4 teaspoon salt

Viewpoints Counting the ways to make holidays meaningful for your children

SUBMIT YOUR LETTERS, COLUMNS

Extension Notes Diane Mason Guest columnist

Holidays can be times of excitement and joy for all, but especially to children, who always look forward to receiving presents, oftentimes costly and unnecessary. Sometimes our children are more concerned about the presents they want and forget the true meaning of the holidays: family, shared time and enriching experiences. Here are a few tips for parents to help their children focus on the true meaning of the holidays. Talk with your children about family traditions and the importance of conserving them. You can have your children ask older relatives about the things they did to celebrate their holidays as children. Perhaps your children may get new ideas about how to spend the holidays with family and friends. If you do not have family traditions, this would be a great time to ask your children for fun activities they would enjoy doing during holidays and make them a tradition. Encourage children to give time and experience rather than material things. The

Overall, don’t try to “do it all” during the busy holiday season. Pick the activities and experiences that can be enjoyed and that are meaningful. This will help reduce stress on all involved and hopefully help keep the joy in the season. holidays are a good opportunity to give back to your community. Talk to your children about the importance of volunteer work or community service and help them get ideas to volunteer around the holidays. Volunteer as a family at a local food pantry or soup kitchen. Kids can also give of their time and help other family relatives or neighbors with house chores, yard work or care. Involve your children in making home gifts or preparing food for family members and friends. Cards, photo albums, scrapbooks, paintings/drawings, cakes and other baked goods can be great ways to create gifts for others. Make gifts that are appropriate to your child’s age and ability. Emphasize what really matters is to express love and gratitude, no matter how people do it.

Jim Connor a legendary coach and more Mel Webster Columnist Community Recorder

The late Jim Connor is perhaps best known as a legendary basketball and baseball coach at Newport Catholic, Boone County and Thomas More College. Most people don’t realize that he was a standout athlete at Newport Public High School where he played baseball and basketball for the Wildcats. He attended St. Bernard Junior College in Cullman, Alabama after his high school graduation from 1947 to 1948 before transferring back to Northern Kentucky and Villa Madonna College (now Thomas More) playing both baseball and basketball at both schools. There Jim received his bachelor of arts degree and then his master’s degree in education from Xavier University in 1955. Connor served with the U.S. Armed Service in the European Theatre from 1942 to 1945. He began his coaching career in 1950 at Newport Catholic High School where during the next 16-years coached many successful Championship teams in both baseball and basketball for the Thoroughbreds. He was also the school’s athletic director and assistant principal during his almost two decades stay. He won the

Ninth Region basketball championship three times in 1953, 1963 and 1966 before accepting a new position in Louisville. Jim took the job at Bellarmine College where he was athletic director, head baseball coach and assistant basketball coach.

However, his heart was in Northern Kentucky and he returned in 1970 to become head basketball coach, head baseball coach and assistant principal at Boone County High School. He remained there until 1978 when he accepted the head basketball, baseball and athletic director’s positions at Thomas More College. He remained as athletic director after he retired from coaching. Today the gymnasium and multipurpose building is named after him the Jim Connor Convocation Center and his son Terry, who came to the school in 1997, is athletic director over a very successful program today. Jim also served many years as a professional baseball scout for major league baseball teams including the Chicago Cubs. A member of the NKADA Hall of Fame and the Northern Ky. Hall of Fame, Connor received the Most Distinguished Alumni Award from Thomas More and was a member of the American Association of Baseball Coaches and served as President of the Kentucky Independent Athletic Association. Connor and his wife Mary had seven children, Terry, James Jr., John, Edward, Marty, Nancy and Gerald. His high school win total in basketball of 431 remains as one of Northern Kentucky’s Top 5 of all time. Mel Webster, president and member of the Northern Kentucky Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.

Northern Kentucky announced three signings for the 2019-20 men’s basketball season. Here's a look at the three future Norse players: Marcus Domask ❚ Guard/Forward ❚ 6-foot-7, 220 lbs. ❚ Waupun High School (Waupun, Wisconsin) Domask can rotate between positions and averaged 22.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists last season. He was also named the East Central Con-

ference Player of the Year and ThirdTeam All Wisconsin. He's a three-star recruit, according to Rivals. "Marcus is an intelligent, competitive player with a very diverse skillset," NKU head coach John Brannen said in a press release. "He is extremely skilled and has a tremendous work ethic. Marcus really fits in with our culture, and has a bright future at NKU. We're extremely pleased to welcome him into the program." Josh Earley ❚ Forward ❚ 6-foot-8, 245 lbs. ❚ Bishop Miege High School (Shawnee Mission, Kansas)

Earley is a forward who averaged 11 points and nine rebounds last season, finishing First Team All-Eastern Kansas League. He's also a three-time state champion at his high school. "Josh is an ultra-athletic forward that can do many things on the basketball court," Brannen said. "He is a very instinctive rebounder, versatile defender, and incredible finisher around the basket. He is a high-level athlete that is a perfect fit for our system and style of play. Their new sandy beach is heated and will provide space for Snowflake to build a nest. “We’re always looking for ways to bring guests closer to our animals, close enough to care,” Aquarium executive director Eric Rose said in a statement. “Getting eye-to-eye with these majestic creatures is sure to help visitors care more about protecting alligators in the wild.” Snowball, the male alligator, is eight feet long and weighs 175 pounds. Snowflake, the female, is six feet long and weighs about 95 pounds.

Florence police say a Burlington, Kentucky, man admitted killing a woman found dead in a hotel room registered to him. Jesse A. James, 32, admitted killing a 26-year-old Arizona woman in a room police said he rented at an extended stay hotel in Florence, according to a news release from police Saturday, Dec. 1. Police responded to a call at 11:15 a.m. that Saturday at the the Home 2 Suites, 7570 Woodspoint Drive, after the the body of Amanda D. Webster of Cameron, Arizona, was found. Officers did not disclose the cause of Webster's death, but said it was suspicious. During the subsequent investigation, police found the room was registered to James. About two hours later, employees at the Florence Rave Cinema called police because a man at the theater was acting strangely. The man gave investigating officers two false names and identifying information when they questioned him. They were able to determine he was James and arrested him for the false in-

Boone County 4-H Livestock Judging Team wins big at American Royal To say it’s been another successful year for the Boone County 4-H Livestock Judging Team would be an understatement. The team won top prize at the state competition and, most recently, represented the state of Kentucky at American Royal in Kansas City, Missouri, where they snagged fifth place out of the 17 states represented. Anna (17) and Clara Meyers (15), Sydney Alsip (15) and Chevy Vaske (16) competed at American Royal, a program that is more than 110 years old. The team took fourth place in the sheep and goat category. The girls also claimed several individual awards. Clara placed seventh in hogs, Sydney earned 26th overall, and Chevy won first prize overall, second in cattle, third in swine, fifth in sheep and tied for fifth in reasons. Missy Alsip, who has been coaching the Livestock Judging team alongside Rosemary Mastin for the past four years, said watching the team win state was her proudest moment of the season. The beauty of livestock judging, though, is not solely vested in awards and accolades. It hones public speaking skills, encourages teamwork and boosts confidence. “Livestock judging has made me a much better speaker,” Clara said. “Be-

fore livestock judging, I could barely give a presentation in front of my geography class, and now I feel like I have all the confidence in the world.” Sydney, Anna and Chevy echoed Clara’s sentiment. “It’s taught me when to care and when not to, how to think on the spot, how to make quick decisions and defend those decisions, and how to lose graciously,” Anna said. That’s music to Alsip’s ears. She said watching the kids grow and mature into confident young adults is her reward for coaching this team. Danielle Ray, Boone County Cooperative Extension Service
