children’s birthday party can be greatly enjoyable – or stressful. Today’s busy parents often lack the time to host and clean up after a large group of youngsters. Cincinnati has a plethora of children’s birthday party venues, and these 10 stand out.
1) A birthday splash The Beach Water Park off ers three standard birthday packages (starting at $149): Kamikaze, Cowabunga and Kokomo. All packages come with: a party table with soft drinks for one hour, pizza, online invitations and birthday bags. The birthday child gets a zipline pass, a slush souvenir yard cup and a customized group picture.
2) A touch of history The Cincinnati Museum Center’s standard package starts at $200 for members and $225 for non-members. It grants admission to the Duke Energy Children’s Museum, Museum of Natural History & Science and Cincinnati History Museum, and one and a half hours of the reserved party room.
So you want to cover up a scar with a tattoo? Better do it fast if you’re in Kentucky. Or wait and see what state public health offi cials have to say about it. Because Kentucky Department of Health is considering banning artists from tattooing over people’s scars. That might lead you to ask the understandable question, why? That’s a mystery. The state health department will not divulge the reason. And no one there is even saying who specifi cally proposed the idea. But you can say what you think if you’re from Kentucky. It’s public comment time and the health department welcomes your thoughts at CHFSregs@ky.gov. “We want to hear about any concerns,” said Beth Fisher, spokeswoman for the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services The offi cials are restricting their own comments about it except to say that regulation to ban the scar-covering tattoos is up for consideration during a routine review of current state health regulations for tattoo businesses. A quick scan on Google shows little major concern about the procedure or results. Could pain be a reason? “While all tattoos hurt, tattooing over a scar will likely make the procedure slightly more painful than it normally would be,” notes AuthorityTattoo.com. “You want to wait until the scar is completely healed before you tattoo over it, and the scars need to be white scars not red,” says Tattoolikethepros.com. WebMD has a bunch of advice about getting tattoos, their safety and what can go wrong. But even that site doesn’t list in its piece, “The Scoop on Tattoos,” anything about scarring – unless you’re getting a tattoo removed (that can cause a scar, the site says). See TATTOOS, Page 2A
3) For animal lovers The Cincinnati Zoo off ers packages that provide one and a half hours of clubhouse rental, an animal plush for the birthday child and two animal encounters. The starting cost of the party is $240 for members and $280 for non-members.
4) Hit the pool Coney Island’s birthday party packages start at See PARTIES , Page 2A

Police in Cincinnati have three men wanted in connection with a May 16 Northern Kentucky armed bank robbery in custody. The May 16 attempted Fort Mitchell bank heist, in which no money was taken, made two Texas men and an Indianapolis man police suspects. Fort Mitchell police announced Sunday night they were looking for Douglas W. Dyson of Channelview, Texas, Harley R. Piatt of Highlands, Texas, and Dominique T. Knox of Indianapolis, Indiana. An unnamed man fl agged down offi cer Anthony White at 12:21 p.m. Tuesday, said Lt. Steve Saunders, a Cincinnati Police Department spokesman. “If you want an example of ‘if you see something, say something,’ that’s a good example of how to do it,” Saunders said. The citizen recognized three men he saw walking on a sidewalk along Reading Road near Dorchester Avenue within sight of I-71. White called in backup. Offi cers brought Knox, Piatt and Dyson into custody without incident, Saunders said. Police found Knox with a handgun. He faces a weapons charge in addition to potential charges in Northern Kentucky, Saunders said. The three men will face extradition to Fort Mitchell,
Harley R. Piatt and Douglas W. Dyson
he said. Before Tuesday’s announcement by Cincinnati, Dayton, Kentucky, police said two of the men wanted by Fort Mitchell police were captured on camera in connection with a Sunday morning convenience store armed robbery. Police in Dayton questioned a man who was locked inside the convenience store by an employee after the robbery, according to a Dayton Police Department news release. When the Fort Mitchell released photos of Piatt as being among the suspects in the robbery hours later, the Dayton offi cer recognized the man he questioned as a witness as Piatt. A skinny black male displayed a handgun to the clerk and demanded money, according to the Dayton news release.

Summer traffi c hell: Massive I-275 construction project begins Sarah Brookbank Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
A pavement rehab project for a three-mile stretch of I-275 in Northern Kentucky began last week and will last through the end of the year. Lane closures started Thursday, May 16. They will be in place through November 2019 on eastbound I-275 from Mineola Pike to Dixie Highway. Delays are expected, according to the Kentucky Transpiration Cabinet. It’s not over then. Westbound work will begin in 2020. In addition to work on I-275 east-
bound from Turfway Road (just east of the Mineola Pike exit) to Dixie Highway, work will occur on the following ramps: ❚ I-275 eastbound to I-75 northbound/southbound ❚ I-275 eastbound exit to Dixie Highway ❚ I-75 northbound ramp to I-275 eastbound Why the massive undertaking? The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet said new pavement will make travel smoother and safer for all who drive this section of the interstate. How low can you go? See where Ohio, Ky., Ind. rank on best states list Sarah Brookbank Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
U.S. News and World report has released its 2019 Best States ranking and once again, Ohio and Kentucky didn’t make the cut. Locally, states did less than stellar. Indiana ranked 36, Ohio ranked 39 and Kentucky ranked 40. Washington was the top state overall. “This confi rms what we, in Washington have always known, that our state is great for businesses, workers, and investments, coupled with natural beauty and innovative, creative people,” said Washington Gov. Jay Inslee in a statement. In calculating the rankings, each of the eight categories was assigned weightings based on the average of
three years of data from an annual national survey that asked a total of more than 50,000 people to prioritize each subject in their state. The categories are health care, education, economy, infrastructure, opportunity, fi scal stability, crime and corrections and natural environment. Ohio ranked No. 7 for opportunity, which means the state provides aff ordability, economic opportunity and equality. Indiana ranked No. 6 for fi nancial stability. Here are the top states: 1 Washington; 2. New Hampshire; 3. Minnesota; 4. Utah; 5. Vermont; 6. Maryland; 7. Virginia; 8; Massachusetts; 9. Nebraska and 10. Hats? Up to you. Here’s another fun idea: have guests bring their own favorite teacup and have them tell the story behind it. Regardless of the kind of tea you serve (and check my abouteating.com site for particulars about brewing perfect tea) you’ll need delicious, and yes, make ahead, sandwiches and sweets to go alongside. Here’s several tried & true.

So versatile as far as the bread is concerned. Cut the trimmed bread into shapes with cookie cutters, or simply spread the fi lling on trimmed bread, top with cucumbers and another slice of trimmed bread, then cut with serrated knife into squares, triangles, etc. Or you can go “topless” – spread fi lling on and top with cucumber and a garnish. Filling can be made a couple days ahead. Ingredients and instructions English cucumbers, scored with a fork (optional) and cut into very thin slices. Lay on paper towels for a bit to remove some moisture. Your choice good bread, crusts trimmed

Spread onto bread, top with cucumber and another piece of bread if desired. Filling can be made a couple days ahead.
Mix together:
Salt to taste Garlic powder to taste - start with 1⁄ 8
Granulated sugar for rolling
Shake of ground cayenne pepper
Mix 8 oz. softened cream cheese with 1 pouch Ranch dressing mix, add a squeeze of lemon if you have it and you’re done!
Filling
1 pound confectioner’s sugar
Fruited chicken salad See the range of mayo? Chicken salad for tea sandwiches should be a little less moist than usual. That’s so it doesn’t slide off the bread. Sometimes I’ll add curry powder. Filling can be made a day ahead. Ingredients 2 cups cooked chicken, fi nely chopped 2 ribs celery, fi nely chopped
Instructions Just mix everything but granulated sugar together. I use my food processor or mixer. Knead and roll mixture into balls, then into granulated sugar and press into molds. Remove from molds. Or just flatten sugared balls with a fork. Either way, they need to dry on cooling racks. That takes anywhere from several hours to about a day. Store in refrigerator, covered. Keeps up to a month.

SCHOOLS NEWS NKU’s CINSAM continues STEM teacher training with Duke Energy Foundation Investment Northern Kentucky University’s Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics (CINSAM) continues its partnership with the Duke Energy Foundation to create powerful communities by expanding STEM teacher training. CINSAM’s Next Generation STEM Classroom Project 2.0 (NextGen STEM Project) has received a $32,000 grant as part of the Duke Energy Foundation’s $250,000 cumulative investment. The Duke Energy Foundation’s Powerful Communities program makes strategic investments to build powerful communities where our students can excel. The CINSAM funds supports the NextGen STEM Project’s mission to educate middle school teachers on STEM—science, technology, engineering and mathematics. “Duke Energy is pleased to continue to support programs, like the NextGen STEM Classroom that enhance our local schools by training teachers to educate other teachers on STEM,” said Kim Vogelgesang, Duke Energy Foundation. “Duke Energy has provided over $230,000 dollars to the CINSAM programming over the last fi ve years because we know how important STEM training is for future success of educators, students and a vibrant community.” This year’s funds will allow 20 teachers to participate in the NextGen STEM Classroom project that takes place over the course of the school year and is embedded in school districts around the region. The NextGen STEM project focuses on learning in a “fi shbowl” environment. CINSAM’s master teachers Ella Bowling and Amber Carter demonstrate a STEM lesson to a class of students with teachers observing around the room. After the “fi shbowl” class, the

teachers meet with the CINSAM staff for a recap breakdown of the lesson to refl ect on their observations and explore ways to apply lessons learned to their own teaching. “The Duke Energy Foundation’s ongoing commitment to the Next Generation STEM Classroom Project has been crucial in increasing access to this high quality teacher professional development,” said Dr. Madhura Kulkarni, CINSAM director. “Without Duke’s sustained support, the project’s impact on
middle school students’ hands-on, minds-on STEM learning would be much diminished.” For more information on the CINSAM Next Gen STEM Classroom, visit its website. Northern Kentucky Norse center Chris Vogt (33) reacts to a foul in the NCAA Tournament fi rstfRound game between the Norse and the Tech Red Raiders in Tulsa in March. Vogt will play for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats next season. SAM GREENE/THE ENQUIRER
Center Vogt follows Brannen from NKU to UC Dave Clark Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Chris Vogt, a junior center who announced last week that he would enter the NCAA transfer portal and not return to the Northern Kentucky Norse, declaredMay 16 via Twitter that he is following his head coach at NKU, John Brannen, from the Norse to the Cincinnati Bearcats. When he becomes eligible, Vogt will have two seasons remaining and likely will help fi ll a void left with center Ny-
sier Brooks announcing that he’ll play next for the Miami Hurricanes. Vogt’s departure was reported on the same day that NKU announced additions to its coaching staff . Vogt averaged 4.5 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, but he broke out for 20 points and 14 rebounds in a 22-point win against Green Bay in January. He scored 16 points in a win against Milwaukee in late February, and two games later he scored 16 again (with eight rebounds) in NKU’s Horizon League Championship quarterfi nal win
against Detroit. Bearcats forward/center Eliel Nsoseme also entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal, according to multiple reports on Wednesday, but still could return to UC. In addition, guard Logan Johnson announced last week that he was entering the transfer portal after one season at UC. And Rashawn Fredericks, who only played one season at UC after transferring from a junior college, announced earlier this month that he’ll play at UAB
.
Jarron Cumberland, who entered his name in the NBA draft but could choose to return to UC, was among 30 players invited to the NBA G League Elite Camp in Chicago. He did not advance to the NBA Combine, potentially increasing his chances that he could return to school. Xenia High School standout Samari Curtis, who had committed to UC, reopened his recruitment last week and committed Wednesday to Nebraska.
KHSAA adopts rules to hold fans accountable for behavior James Weber Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Kentucky high school coaches and athletes have always been subject to Kentucky High School Athletic Association disciplinary action. Now spectators can be held accountable if they get out of line. The KHSAA Board of Control adopted a spectator conduct provision into its policies and procedures May 8 that any adult spectator removed by school administrators or law enforcement, whether or not referred by a contest offi cial, for unsportsmanlike conduct shall be suspended from attending, at minimum, the next contest at that level of competition and all other contests at any level in the interim, the policy
states. An adult spectator is defi ned as any adult not listed as a school coach attending any KHSAA-sanctioned interscholastic scrimmage, regular or postseason contest. “It is my sincere hope, and I believe that of our board, that this penalty never be implemented and this be yet another tool in the toolbox of our school administrators to address some of the concerns we see throughout the year, ” KHSAA commissioner Julian Tackett said in a release. “Hopefully this is a deterrent that, when implemented in our schools, becomes that one last chance for people to stop short of acting in such an unsportsmanlike manner that ejection is the only option.” The KHSAA has expressed concern
in recent months in the decreased number of offi cials in various sports.
State baseball, softball sites set The KHSAA Board of Control also approved sites for the upcoming baseball and softball semi-state games while addressing a number of policy revisions. KHSAA staff has worked throughout the year to secure neutral venues for the baseball and softball semi-state rounds – with a preference given to collegiate sites, if possible. The semi-state games will take place Saturday, June 1. In both baseball and softball, the Eighth Region champion will face the Seventh Region champion at the University of Louisville.
In softball, the Ninth and 10th Region champions will face off at the Northern Kentucky University softball complex. The site for the same meeting in baseball has yet to be determined. Both of those matchups have the potential to pair up two Northern Kentucky teams. Our board’s directive has been to curtail the cost of travel for some teams by playing games closer to the schools and yet off er a neutral fi eld to replicate a state fi nals qualifying experience," Tackett said. “Thankfully, many of these institutions off ered their facilities at no cost to truly support the member schools and we are very thankful. This gets our students onto See KHSAA, Page 2B

Wyoming tabs ex-Anderson, TMU coach Jones to lead boys soccer Scott Springer Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
With the retirement of veteran boys soccer coach Steve Thomas, Wyoming High School has reached out to a youthful coach with an immeasurable amount of athletic and life experience. Adam Jones will take over the reins of the soccer Cowboys who are defending Cincinnati Hills League champions. Thomas departs having won three of the last fi ve CHL titles along with league Coach of the Year. “We’re very excited he is a part of not just our soccer coaching staff , but our entire coaching/athletic staff at Wyoming,” Wyoming Athletic Director Jan Wilking said. “He is proven, he’s enthusiastic and he’s charismatic. What we want from our soccer program to take the next step, he’s been there, done that.” Fortunately for Jones, he shared a workout facility with prior coach Steve Thomas, so Jones had a heads-up on the opening. “I respect the heck out of Steve and what he’s done at Wyoming,” Jones
Adam Jones led Anderson to the Division I regional fi nal game in 2017. Jones now takes over at Wyoming. JIM OWENS/FOR THE ENQUIRER
said. “My goal right now is to be in a position where I can have the most positive impact on the lives of young people.” As for the qualifi cations of the 28year-old Jones, he was 47-6-4 as the head coach at Anderson from 2015-2017 with a pair of Eastern Cincinnati Conference titles along with three ECC
Coach of the Year acknowledgments. The Redskins made the Division I regional semifi nals in 2016 and were regional fi nalists in 2017, when they fi nished 20-2. Anderson was 19-1-1 in the ECC in the trio of seasons with Jones at the helm. From 2012-15, he was an assistant at his alma mater, Mason, as the Comets went 55-5-5, including fi nishing 2013 as state champion. He has also coached club soccer and was briefl y coach at Thomas More College in 2018. “I had the opportunity to go to the college game and I was thankful for that,” Jones said. “But, there’s nothing like the grind of high school soccer. You’re with them every single day. You get to know them. You build authentic relationships. That’s where you really make impactful changes in the lives of young people. I was looking for that opportunity, and when Wyoming opened up I didn’t hesitate.” His most recent assignment has been at the Academy of Sports Performance, where he is a certifi ed strength and conditioning specialist and certifi ed per-
sonal trainer. He’s been working with Madeira High School athletes, so he’s familiar with the ways of the CHL. Jones will assume control of the Cowboys corral, where Wyoming was 15-1-2 last season and 6-0-1 in the CHL. It’s a diff erent situation from Anderson, where he took over a squad that had won just nine total games from 2012-14. “We’ve had a lot of success in what Steve Thomas has developed here,” Wilking said. “Now we have the opportunity to build on that, and I think he’s the guy to take us there.” Jones will remain with the Academy of Sports Performance but could wind up in Wyoming’s building at some point. Previously, he was a junior high and high school English teacher in the Forest Hills School District. Many of his former players still keep in contact with him. Recently, his father passed away and many of his former Anderson squad showed up to support him. “That to me said a ton,” Jones said. “I’ve been removed from Anderson for a year. I’m no longer their coach and they traveled 45 minutes to see me.”
Which coaches did Walton-Verona, Lloyd hire? James Weber Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Some prominent Northern Kentucky coaching vacancies have been fi lled. Walton-Verona announced Mike Hester as its new head boys basketball coach. Hester, a 2007 Simon Kenton High School graduate, was a standout basketball player there and for the past eight years has been on the staff of his head coach at SK, Trent Steiner, on the Pioneers bench. As a player at SK, he averaged 17 points per game as a senior and was a

two-time all-region pick. He played two seasons at Union College in Kentucky, averaging 10 points per game as a sophomore, before moving to Northern Kentucky University to fi nish his college ca-
reer. He played seven games during the 2010-11 season for the Norse. Hester replaces Grant Brannen, who resigned after leading WV to the Sweet 16 for the fi rst since 1942 and recording their fi rst-ever win in the state tournament. Brannen was 116-65, 80-20 in the past three seasons, where the Bearcats won the All “A” Classic Eighth Region title all those years and fi nished as state runner-up in the All “A” in 2018. According to Walton-Verona, Hester has already met his new team and was set to oversee workouts last Thursday. Lloyd Memorial announced Kyle Nie-
derman as its new head football coach, replacing Eric Turner, who left to take the same position at Scott High School after six seasons. Turner went 44-27 at Lloyd and won one district championship. Niederman, a 1990 graduate of Boone County High School, played football there and at Thomas More College. He has been an assistant principal at Lloyd this school year after spending the previous four years as the principal at Newport High School. Niederman has previously been an assistant coach at Bellevue, Boone County and Ryle.

Caroline Baker and Mia Hart both shot 288 to lead Ryle, fi nishing in the top seven. Pendleton County was second in Region 7, led by Katy Kaiser in second and Brannen in third. In the boys tournament, Brennan Eilers of St. Henry and Christopher Miller of Grant County tied for 20th with a 291.
