Danny Dollar Academy teaches kids about money Melissa Reinert Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS - In unison and to the beat ... “Dream big to be a young tycoon, Keep dreaming you’ll meet your goal soon. If you create a plan there’s nothing you can’t do, Dream big to be a young tycoon.” Students from Wheatley Elementary in Louisville had Northern Kentucky University bustin’ a move with their hiphop tune “Econ Beats” in spring of 2017. They were visiting the university for a ceremony culminating their participation in the pilot Danny Dollar Academy. Curriculum for the Academy focused on students in grades three through five. It was developed at NKU’s Center for Economic Education (CEE). The four-week program begins with students reading Ty Jackson’s “Danny Dollar Millionaire Extraordinaire” in their classrooms. The book, published in 2011, tells the story of Danny Dollar, an 11-year-old with a plan. Danny is out to become a millionaire and conquer the world. Unfortunately, the neighborhood bullies have other plans for Danny, like public humiliation. But when the last person in the world he’d ever expected enters his life, something happens he never couldn’t have imagined. Along the way in this fun story, Danny teaches kids about finance, banking, investing and entrepreneurship.
Danny Dollar Academy is inspired by the book, "Danny Dollar Millionaire Extraordinaire" written by Ty Jackson. PROVIDED

“A friend of mine had been reading the book to her child and thought I should know about it, “ said Center for Economic Education director Abdullah Al-Bahrani. “I checked it out and was so impressed by the inclusiveness, diversity and educational value of the book.” In 2016, Al-Bahrani reached out to Jackson to develop a financial literacy program, ultimately bringing Danny Dollar Academy to life. Lesson plans created by CEE and the Federal Reserve of Cleveland connect the concepts in the book to state education standards. “The Academy is successful because we merge reading literacy with entrepreneurship, personal finance and economic education curriculum,”
The Community Press & Recorder has a email address you can use to send letters to the editor and guest columns. Send your letters (200 words or less) or guest columns (500 words or less) to: viewpoints@communitypress.com As before, please include your first and last name on letters to the editor, along with name of your community. Include your phone number as well. With guest columns, include your color headshot (a photo of you from shoulders up) along with your column. Include a few sentences giving your community and describing any expertise you have on the subject of your column.
Al-Bahrani said. “Students are encouraged to create their own businesses, and this real-life application helps make the project memorable.” Third-graders from Robert D. Johnson Elementary in Fort Thomas sold tumblers for their creative project, raising $200 for Campbell County Animal Shelter. The tumblers were marketed through student-made commercials that ran during the school’s morning announcements. Johnson Elementary teacher Aimee Shadwell believes her students benefitted from Danny Dollar Academy. “Students were able to have a real voice in their learning and see how their actions can have a positive impact on the broader community,” she said. In 2017-18, Danny Dollar Academy reached 912 students from 13 school districts in four states. This year, they are on track to reach 1,300 students throughout the country thanks to the partnership with the Federal Reserve
Bank of Cleveland. “This is the gateway to a bigger, brighter and grander outreach of the program,” author Jackson said. “I am through the stratosphere excited about the potential of what this partnership means for the future of Danny Dollar Academy.” The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland supports economic self-empowerment, community engagement and a better understanding of its role through partnerships and programs. The partnership with NKU runs from January to April 2019 and will expand the program to serve 300 fourth- and fifth-graders in Cincinnati and Cleveland. “Economic and financial literacy is so important for young people,” Al-Bahrani said. “It’s important to learn about this as soon as possible so that as adults they can properly evaluate information and make the best decisions for themselves.”

Many Medicare plans don’t include dental.
Adding a plan from The Dental Care Plus Group (DCPG) will fill those gaps – helping you maintain healthy teeth and gums.
With a DCPG plan you’ll enjoy: • No waiting periods on preventive services. • Preventive services covered at 100% on most plans after a $10 copay. • Access to vision and hearing discount programs. • No age maximums.
Servatii closing its Fountain Square location will be Northern Kentucky’s gain as the specialty pastry shop and deli moves exclusively to the suburbs. There will be no more Downtown Servatii Pastry Shop & Deli after the last day of business Friday, Dec. 21, said Bill Haines, the controller for the family-run business. Servatii has grown over the last 50 years to have 13 shops or kiosks in the Cincinnati area and Northern Kentucky. This is a permanent closure to reflect changes in customer habits to larger pickup orders, he said. “We really hate to leave the Fountain Square area,” Haines said. The problem was most Servatii business comes from people parking cars
close to the shop to take home large orders including birthday cakes and bread, he said. It was hard for people to park close and walk away with larger orders at Fountain Square, he said. Most people came Downtown for a coffee and some pastries, Haines said. Downtown’s market for large order deliveries will still be served, he said. A “good percentage “ of its sales is through catering, Haines said. “We’ll just do it from other retail locations.” Everything from Fountain Square will be moved into a new Northern Kentucky shop, Haines said. The decision to move east or west of the Crestview Hills shop near Interstate 275 has yet to be made, he said. The Florence Mall or Union area, Fort Thomas and south of Northern Kentucky University are all areas being considered, he said.

Attorney Robert pool pleaded not guilty to 15 charges including human trafficking of a minor and rape. A police investigation into human trafficking charges against prominent conservative activist and former judge Tim Nolan led to a tip about Poole too, said Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear Nov. 16 in a news release. The 50-year-old Poole was arrested Nov. 16 at his Erlanger law office. A Kenton County grand jury indicted Poole on sex crimes charges. Campbell County Police Department tipped off Erlanger police about Poole after Nolan was sentenced to 20 years in prison in May 2018 on human trafficking charges. The charges against Poole range from 2018 back to 2005, according to a Nov. 16 Enquirer article. The Burlington resident remains in Kenton County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond. Kenton Circuit Court Judge Gregory M. Bartlett denied Poole’s request for a lesser bail. “What caught my eye was looking at the indictment was the charge of bribing a witness,” Bartlett said. Bribing a witness is something Bartlett said, “has to be taken seriously.” Barbara Whaley, an assistant Kentucky Attorney General, said argued against releasing Poole on bail. Police detectives have spoken with victims’ families about Poole and the prospect of bail. “There is ample evidence that the victims remain fearful should the de-
fendant be released on bond,” Whaley said. Whaley and prosecutors from Beshear’s office are handling the case against Poole. Robert L. Covington attorney Poole Mary Rafizadeh represented Poole in court Monday while he appeared on video live from the jail in a pink jail-issued jumpsuit. “Mr. Poole is a lifelong resident of this area and he as thriving practice at this moment,” she said. Covington attorney Chas J. Brannen told Bartlett he and Fort Wright-based attorney Brian Halloran were handling cases for Poole’s practice while he is in jail. “That’s what friends are for,” Brannen said of Poole outside the courtroom after the arraignment.
What the charges are: ❚ Poole faces two charges of trafficking of a minor for commercial sexual activity. ❚ He faces one charge of unlawful transaction with a minor under 16 for illegal sexual activity. ❚ He faces two charges of unlawful transaction with a minor under 18 for illegal sexual activity. ❚ Poole faces three counts of human trafficking of an adult for commercial sexual activity. ❚ He faces five charges of complicity to human trafficking of an adult for commercial sexual activity. ❚ He faces one charge of third-degree rape. ❚ Poole faces one charge of bribing a witness.

I have been waiting to share this special recipe Giant cinnamon roll The recipe called for bread flour. All I had was all-purpose, so I just used a little more. That substitution may not work in all recipes, but it worked fine in this one.
Butter or spray pan. Roll dough out on very lightly floured surface to a 9x12” rectangle, about 1/4” thick.
If you like, right after you frost it, sprinkle with chopped toasted pecans.
Spread dough with butter, then sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon, patting the mixture in as you go.
Ingredients for roll
Cut into six 11⁄2” x 12” strips.
1 round cake pan, 9”
Loosely roll up 1 strip and place in center of pan.
1 package active dry yeast, (0.25 oz.) 3
⁄4 cup warm water (110-115 degrees)
⁄4 cup granulated sugar + pinch for feeding yeast
1
⁄2 teaspoon salt
1
1 large egg, room temperature 3 cups all-purpose flour or 21⁄2 cups bread flour ⁄4 cup butter, softened
1
⁄2 cup packed brown sugar
1
Add rest of strips, loosely coiling them around the center spiral of dough. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 40 minutes. Preheat oven to 325. Bake 25-35 minutes or until top is golden and dough in center is set, not gummy. A toothpick inserted in center will come out clean. (mine took 25 minutes). Let cool 10 minutes then frost with cream cheese frosting.
1 tablespoon cinnamon
Frosting
Instead of individual rolls you get a super-sized spiraled cinnamon roll.
Instructions
RITA HEIKENFELD FOR THE COMMUNITY PRESS
Dissolve yeast in warm water, adding a pinch of sugar to speed up the proofing process. Give it a stir. Let stand until foamy, around 5 minutes or so.
Beat 3 oz. cream cheese, softened, 2 tablespoons butter, softened, 1 cup confectioners’ sugar, 1-3 tablespoons milk and a dash of vanilla. Or make a simple glaze with 1 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon or bit more of water, and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
Rita’s Kitchen
Place in mixing bowl and mix in granulated sugar and salt.
Rita Heikenfeld
I could hardly wait to share this giant cinnamon roll recipe with you. The recipe intrigued me – instead of individual rolls you get a super-sized spiraled cinnamon roll, pretty and easy to serve. Check out my site abouteating.com for a photo tutorial. Now don’t forget about the true meaning of Christmas and this holiday season - it’s about family and friends getting together. Remember, it’s not just about the food, but who shares it with you. Rita Nader Heikenfeld is an herbalist, educator and author. Find her blog online at Abouteating.com . Email her at rita@communitypress.com with “Rita’s kitchen” in the subject line.
Add egg and 1 cup flour and mix well to combine. Mixture will be real sticky. Continue adding flour until nice dough forms. It may or may not leave the sides of the bowl. That’s OK. Turn out onto a very lightly floured board and knead a few minutes. It will be as smooth as a baby’s bottom. Cover with damp cloth and let rest 10 minutes.
Serves 8-12. Tips: Substituting rapid rise yeast. Yes, you can. This will speed up the rising process a bit. Freeze it. Cool, then wrap well and freeze, unfrosted, for up to 3 weeks. Wrap in foil to rewarm and then frost it.

Mark your calendars with these simple instructions: ❚ Christmas: Select plants with tightly clustered, yellow buds. Protect from hot or cold drafts, water when dry, and place in a room with bright natural light. ❚ New Year’s Day: Use an all-purpose houseplant fertilizer. Keep the plant in a sunny window, water regularly, fertilize monthly. Plant will remain colorful for many weeks. ❚ St. Patrick’s Day (March 17): Remove faded flowers and bracts and dried leaves from the plant. Add more soil, preferably a commercially available sterile mix. For a smaller plant - prune stems about three to six inches to remove colored bracts. Fertilize with complete houseplant fertilizer. ❚ Mothers’ Day: Plant should be approaching three feet in height. Trim off two to six inches of the branches to promote side branching. Repot to a larger container (two to three sizes larger). Move plant outside; first to indirect, then direct sunlight (a location that receives full sun each day for at least six hours). ❚ June-July: Fertilize the plant every two weeks; water regularly. Fourth of July: Trim plant again. Make sure it is in
full sunlight. Slightly increase amount of fertilizer. ❚ August-October: Fertilize every week. Water frequently, once or twice a day. ❚ Labor Day (early September): Plant may have grown to three to five feet. It can be pruned to a height of 18-24 inches. Move indoors but make sure it has six hours of direct sunlight from a curtainfree window. Continue regular water and fertilizer. ❚ First Day of autumn (Sept. 21): Selectively remove the smallest new branches so only 10 to 25 stems remain to produce flowers. Sept. 21 to Oct. 1, give the plant 14 hours of uninterrupted darkness and 10 hours of bright sunlight each day. For example, each day place the plant in a light-free closet or under a box at 6 p.m. each evening and return it to the sunny window at 8 a.m. the next morning. Or simply place the plant in a little used south facing room and be sure not to turn the lights on in the room from 6 p.m. - 8 a.m. each day. Continue to water and fertilize. Rotate the plant each day to give all sides even light. ❚ Halloween (Oct. 31): Stop day/night light/dark treatment. Keep plant in a sunny area. Reduce fertilizer applications. The plant can remain in its usual full sun location as the upper leaves (bracts) turn red, pink or white. ❚ November-December: Fertilize every three weeks. Water regularly. ❚ Christmas: Enjoy your beautiful “new” poinsettia. Sarah Stolz is the Campbell County Horticulture Agent.

Sports Here’s what we learned from NKU’s win over Miami James Weber Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Northern Kentucky snapped a twogame losing streak with a hard-fought win over regional rival Miami Dec. 16, 72-66, to improve to 9-3. Here is a closer look back and ahead for the Norse. MCDONALD MOMENTS: The numbers hadn’t shown it, but Drew McDonald said he was in a slump. McDonald, who scored eight points at Fifth Third Arena against the UC Bearcats, rebounded Dec. 8 at Eastern Kentucky with 23 points and five assists. Against Miami, he posted 21 points and 10 rebounds. He scored the basket that put NKU ahead for good at 57-55 and then hit four free throws in the final minute to clinch the win. “He had a look in his eye that he wanted the ball,” said NKU head coach John Brannen. “When he has that look in his eye, you have to find a way to get it to him. That’s what we did. I knew he would make the foul shots. He was thinking a step or two ahead and when he does that, he’s hard to stop.” SHARPE-SHOOTING: Junior guard Tyler Sharpe, NKU’s second-leading scorer for the year, had 11 of his 15 points in the first half. He hit three 3-pointers in a row in a key middle stretch of the half that lifted the Norse from a sevenpoint deficit at 17-10. Sharpe, who came in averaging 14.1 ppg. and averaging 40.8 percent from 3point range (29-71) made three or more treys for the eighth straight game. He has scored in double figures for seven straight, averaging 17 ppg. That includes a career-high 28 points at Morehead State. He has 32 made treys for the year, leading the team. TATE UPDATE: Jalen Tate, a 6-6 redshirt sophomore guard, missed his fourth game of the season and second in a row with an injury. He was being reevaulated this week. Tate, who started the first six games of the year, has scored in double figures six times this season and averages 11.5 points per game. He shoots over 51 percent from the field and averages 3.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds a contest. Tate See NKU, Page 2B

started all eight games as a freshman and 31 games last year, earning a redshirt season from his 2016-17 injury. In his place, freshman guard Trevon Faulkner, the reigning Kentucky Mr. Basketball from Mercer County, has started the last five games and been effective on both sides of the ball. A LOT CHANGES IN FIVE WEEKS: NKU hosts Northern Illinois 7 p.m. Thursday before beginning Horizon League play by hosting IUPUI Friday. NKU beat NIU 88-85 in double-overtime on Nov. 9. In the first game, Drew McDonald led NKU with 28 points and 14 rebounds. Dantez Walton had 16 points and nine rebounds. Tyler Sharpe scored 16 points and Zaynah Robinson 13. Jalen Tate started that game and had seven points and seven assists. NKU had eight points from its bench in that game, which was the first for some of the reserves against Division I competition. NKU had beaten Division III Wilmington in its season opener. “Playing them twice will be a good test for us,” McDonald said. “Back then, we were young. We didn’t know what we had then. Now, both teams will be completely different. Both teams have found their identity. They have some really physical bigs. It will be a physical night.” In the first game, the visiting Huskies did not have Eugene German, a 6-0 junior guard who has played the last seven games, averaging 21.6 points and 3.3 assists. German was second team all-MAC last year. Head coach John Brannen is looking for a tough game and a party atmosphere. “German coming back will be a real challenge,” Brannen said. “I hope our fans come out. We don’t go to Christmas parties as coaches. I don’t know that whole life with Christmas parties. If there’s any way we can bring a Christmas party here, that would be really good because we need a good crowd here Thursday night.” ON THE HORIZON: NKU, the defending regularseason Horizon League champion, begins league play by hosting IUPUI Dec. 28 and UIC Dec. 30. “Just take it day by day,” Sharpe said. “We have a very good league. Teams in our league that were good last year are good again, and teams that struggled last year are much improved. We’re going to focus on Northern Illinois and keep preparing, and when conference play comes, we’ll be ready.”

YOUR HEALTH with Dr. Owens
This holiday, invest in building strong relationships This is the time of year when we want to show our friends and family how much we care about them. As you make your to-do list and look at your budget, consider the gift of your time.
O’dell M. Owens, MD, MPH President & CEO
One way to build strong relationships with children and adults is to show that we enjoy being with them. Set aside time for activities to do together, whether it’s sharing a meal or going to a holiday-themed event. Acknowledge people by name for who they are, not just what they do. The Search Institute, a nonprofit organization that studies and works to strengthen youth, outlines some ways we can build relationships. While focused on youth, many of these tips could apply to people of any age. • Express care: Show youth that you enjoy being with them. • Challenge growth: Help your children to see possibilities for their own futures. • Provide support: Guide and encourage children as they work to complete tasks and achieve goals. • Share power: Take children’s ideas seriously. Work together to solve problems and reach goals. • Expand possibilities: Help children connect with people, ideas and opportunities that help them learn and grow. Spending time with those we car care about is more than just creating a feel-good moment. Research shows a link between strong social ties and improved health, from fighting off germs to reducing incidence of depression and dementia. As we come to the end of 2018 and begin a new year, be sure to invest in your relationyou care about and your ships—for yourself, those yo health. Program gives students early path to med school Northern Kentucky University students interested in medical school can now apply for the Early Assurance Program (EAP) at the UK College of MedicineNorthern Kentucky Campus. The applications opened on Dec. 1 for sophomores entering their spring semester. The EAP program is designed to create a pathway for students to medical school. Students are assured admission to the UK College of Medicine- Northern Kentucky Campus after they complete the requirements and graduate. “The EAP program provides guidance and motivation during their final years of undergrad,” said Dr. Erin Strome, director of NKU’s Pre-Medical Pathways Program. “The course load is difficult for pre-med students, it takes a lot of focus. In addition to maintaining a high GPA and MCAT scores, they also have community service requirements, shadowing hours, and research opportunities needed to strengthen their application to medical school.

Nominations open for Behringer-Crawford 2019 Two-Headed Calf Awards Behringer-Crawford Museum (BCM) in Devou Park is inviting the community to apply for the museum’s ninth annual Two-Headed Calf Awards. The awards are meant to celebrate the nominees’ extraordinary achievement for service to the community, to history or to learning. Interested applicants can contact BCM Executive Director Laurie Risch (lrisch@bcmuseum.org or 859-491-4003) for an application or visit bcmuseum.org. Applications are due by Jan. 7, and can be submitted by mail, in person or by email. of fun, too. And perhaps nothing symbolizes that more than the museum’s taxidermic icon, the twoheaded calf. BCM’s TwoHeaded Calf Awards recognize that very often, true excellence rests with those who demonstrate achievement beyond a single contribution. The awards will be presented at a banquet on Thursday, March 21, in Northern Kentucky University’s Votruba Student Union Ballroom. Reservations can be made by contacting the museum at 859-491-4003. The awards are: For service to the community: Generosity and vision This award is a tribute to a citizen who has embraced community service not as a singular activity but with a deep commitment to doubling his or her contribution by combining the gift of service with a vision for how the quality of life in our community can be and is

affirmatively improved by supporting the arts, education, culture and history that enrich each of us. The honoree’s service might take the form of a contribution of his or her time, talent or treasure, or better yet, the sum of all of those. The honoree is a role model, especially for young people. For service to history: Scholarship and public service This award honors a residentwho has contributed to the preservation and understanding of our regional or state history and whose scholarship captures the past not solely as a matter of scholarship but as a matter of public good. For service to learning: Academic excellence and innovation This award is open to an individual (a student, a parent, a teacher, a principal, an administrator or a volunteer), a school or even a school district. An auxiliary group affiliated with education can be nominated (for example, a scout troop, single teacher, a teacher and class, or whole school.) The award is meant to celebrate extraordinary teaching and learning, especially in disciplines dear to the Behringer-Crawford, such as history or archaeology. Sharen Kardon, Behringer-Crawford
