PRICE HILL - Elder High School broke ground on Phase I of its state-ofthe-art, 19,500-square-feet Panther Fitness Center on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Presiding over the ceremony was Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr in the future site of the center, the east parking lot. The new Panther Fitness Center will feature a weight room on the first floor, which doubles the current space, as well as a more than 6,000-square-foot second-floor, multi-purpose room. The project is expected to be completed in two phases as funds are secured. Elder graduate and tight end for the Minnesota Vikings, Kyle Rudolph, has personally committed his financial support of the project, and the school has already secured additional funding to complete Phase I. Last spring, Rudolph stopped by The Pit and talked about his investment with The Enquirer’s Adam Baum “The main reason I wanted to do it was I know what this place did for me,” Rudolph said. “I was born a Panther, I had a dad that went here, a grandfather that went here, uncles that went here, I went here and my brother went here. Now, we have cousins here. “This place is something always near and dear to my heart. I had every resource and every opportunity to become the man and player I am today. I want kids who are coming here now and in the future to have every opportunity. I’m not sure where I’ll be on a yearly basis. Wherever football takes me that’s where home will be. Now, I’ll always have home here and a piece of my heart will always be in Price Hill.”

The idea for the facility came about in 2014 when Rudolph signed a contract extension. Minnesota Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph (82) celebrates after the NFC Divisional Playoff football game against the New Orleans Saints at U.S. Bank Stadium. BRAD REMPEL, BRAD REMPEL-USA TODAY SPORTS
Phase I includes construction of a two-story facility on the east side of the current school building; completion of the first floor featuring weight-training space (5,870 square feet), changing room/locker room/restroom (860 square feet), coaches’ office (520 square feet) lobby and outfitting the second floor in preparation for Phase II. Once funded, Phase II will include a multi-purpose room (6,000 square feet), storage areas, potential classroom/meeting space, a parking lot (on the northwest side of the school building), re-purposing of the Donohoe Center, which currently houses a weight

room, spirit shop and coaches’ office. Other benefits the new facility will include flexibility when scheduling inseason and out-of-season team activities, ample training space during inclement weather, the ability to host team practices, thereby freeing up current space for other activities, additional space for physical education classes and an area for potential community outreach programs. Conceptual design work began in 2017, led by Jeffery Sackenheim, a project manager with SHP Leading Design. Monarch Construction has been hired as the general contractor.

As the new Kroger Marketplace in Colerain Township takes shape, one big question remains: When’s it going to open? Green Township residents, happy to see work on their new Kroger on Harrison Avenue are asking the same question about their store. The Kroger Co. is building Kroger Marketplace stores in both of these West Side communities. Kroger announced the new Green Township store in 2015 and Colerain in 2014. Both stores were set to begin construction in 2016, but nothing happened right away. Colerain’s store is a 135,000square-foot grocery with a fuel center on Springdale Road, across the street from Northgate Mall. The new store is under construction on the property where some retail offices and the former McDonald’s Restaurant stood. The project required buying a number of houses on Yellowstone Drive behind the site, which were demolished. Colerain officials in 2016 said the new grocery represented $25 million in new investment in the township. The superstore keeps 140 jobs and is anticipated to generate 100 new jobs when it opens. The Kroger store at 9690 Colerain Ave. will close when the new marketplace opens. Work started in the fall of 2017, and now the finish line is in sight. Kroger officials said the store is set to open before the end of the year. A sign inside the Fifth Third branch in the Northgate Kroger on Colerain Avenue said it will close Dec. 21. Green Township officials said the company is building a 124,000square-foot store across the parking lot from its existing Kroger store at 5830 Harrison Ave. The new store is being built on a parcel next to the Cinemark movie theater. State Farm agent helps Cheviot firefighters reduce fire dangers State Farm agents know first-hand the trauma a family faces following a devastating house fire. That’s one reason why the state’s largest home insurer is taking a proactive approach to working with local fire departments to help communities reduce house fires. Cincinnati State Farm agent Theresa Westfelt donated fire prevention kits to the Cheviot Fire Department ahead of the National Fire Protection Association Fire Prevention Week. The kits contain educational fire prevention materials for homeowners and children. Firefighters can share the information at fire stations or at community events. “We hope this donation will help raise awareness and reduce fire losses in Cincinnati,” says Westfelt. Work started in spring 2018, and Kroger officials said the store should open next spring. In comparison, the Marketplace in Oakley Square that opened in 2015 covers 145,000 square feet. In addition to food, Kroger Marketplace stores also carry home fashion and decor items, bed and bath products, kitchen and small appliances, home office products and toys.

No peeking! It’s the secret to good dumplings Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld
Chicken & high-rise dumplings Ingredients chicken and vegetables 1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) butter 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
Yesterday, I purchased a deli-roasted chicken to make Asian chicken soup with lemon grass and mushrooms. But when I mentioned it to my husband, Frank, he gave me “the look.” Which meant that OK he’d certainly not complain – after all I’m doing the cooking here – but I could tell he wasn’t in the mood for that. We had been outside for most of the day, still getting the gardens and wood piles ready for winter. He was hungry for something more substantial, and perhaps not so exotic. So I made chicken & dumplings. I was glad I made the switch. A down-home meal for a chilly fall day. And here’s the deal: dumplings may look complicated, but honestly, they’re fun and easy enough for kids to make, with guidance. The secret? No peeking while the dumplings cook! It’s the steam in the pot that makes them rise so high. Dumplings are yummy cooked on top of soup or stew, or simply dropped into hot broth.
Mac & cheese update I love all the recipes you’re sending! I’m going through them and will be able to share some real soon.
1 teaspoon or so garlic, minced (1 nice clove) 14.5 oz. can chicken broth, low sodium 2/3 cup milk 3 generous cups cooked chicken, coarsely chopped 1/2 pound sausage, cooked, drained and crumbled 10 oz. box frozen peas and carrots, thawed a bit (optional) Salt and pepper Instructions Melt butter in pot and stir in flour. Whisk over medium heat until it starts to turn a little golden, but don’t let brown. Add garlic, broth and milk. Cook, stirring constantly until slightly thickened, a few minutes. Stir in chicken, sausage and vegetables. Taste for salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, and then lower to simmer, covered, while you make dumplings. Don’t worry if it looks a little thin, the dumplings will thicken the mixture more as they cook. Ingredients dumplings Depending upon how wide the pan is, you may not fit all dumplings on top of chicken. I have a second, smaller pan simmering with broth and that’s how I cook extra dumplings. Or just cut the recipe in half. 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt Pepper to taste
Chicken and dumplings is a hearty meal for a chilly fall day. RITA HEIKENFELD FOR THE COMMUNITY PRESS
Chopped parsley or bit of dried parsley (optional)
(Check out my web site for step-by-step photos).
1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) butter, cut into small chunks
Use a small ice cream scoop or tablespoon sprayed with cooking spray to drop dumplings carefully on top of simmering chicken, leaving some space in between for expansion. Put lid on. No peeking! Simmer 12-15 minutes, or until largest dumpling is done: cut in half to test. Dumplings expand to double.
1 egg, beaten slightly 1/2 cup milk Instructions Whisk flour, baking powder, salt, pepper and parsley. Cut butter into flour mixture with fork or pastry blender until blended to the point where flour still has some lumps of butter in it. Don’t over mix. Make a well in center. Whisk egg and milk together. Pour into well and mix with fork. Dough will leave sides of bowl and look shaggy and sticky. Don’t over mix.
Makes about 10-12.
Tip: Is your baking powder still good? Put a teaspoon in warm water - it should fizz up quickly if it’s good.

I grew up in a large Christian family. We were also taught the Lord’s Prayer. (Response to “Sin or Spin?” on Oct. 17). “Our Father” means that God is father to all people throughout the world. That makes all of us brothers and sisters. In our family there are seven siblings. We
have distinctive likes and dislikes, the same as all people. Although our parents taught us to love and respect each other, that was a large order for us to follow. As young children, we clashed with each other when we didn’t get our way. We judged that we were always right and anyone who opposed us was wrong. We didn’t get the part of “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” As adults, we acknowledge our differ-

We face trials and suffering because that is part of life. We help each other through them. We pray for each other. We stick together. This is not utopia. There are many rough patches and we should talk with each other. That means two-way communication, talking and listening with courtesy and respect-DIALOG. Our country is going through rough patches, especially in the political realm.
People of all ideologies and political parties are forgetting common courtesy, good manners, basic civility, and instead making quick judgments. We need to remember that our country is like a huge family. No one is always right, and no one is always wrong. Let us remember this as we go forward. Sports Stargel Stadium ceremony leaves the family ‘ecstatic’
Taft takes the field before the OHSAA final regular season game between Taft High School and Aiken High School on Friday, Oct. 26, 2018 at Stargel Stadium in the West End. ALBERT CESARE / THE ENQUIRER Charlie Hatch Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Jason Stargel called it perfect football weather. As the rain showered on a recent Friday night, Stargel stood at midfield with his family behind him and the Taft and Aiken teams on his sides. Soon, Cincinnati Public Schools Athletics Director Josh Hardin presented a plaque to honor the Stargel family, and more specifically, Willard R. Stargel, whom the stadium was named after. The pregame ceremony was the appetizer to the Taft’s last regular season home game in the stadium. After the season, the stadium, which opened in 2004, will be demolished and replaced by Futbol Club Cincinnati’s eventual West End Stadium for its Major League Soccer expansion team. As a result, a new Stargel Stadium will be built across the street.
In honor or the stadium’s last home game between two high schools that play their home games there, CPS wanted to pay tribute to the Stargel family and to the man the stadium is named after. “Personally, I’m just ecstatic about how Taft alumni, Taft and CPS have taken on the honor of giving Dad the naming rights of the stadium,” Jason said before Friday’s game. “I think it speaks volumes to what Dad’s impact was on the community and the kids that were under his tutelage. He made an impact, and it was evident by them naming the stadium after him.” Willard went to Woodward High School before enrolling at the University of Cincinnati, where he participated in football, basketball and track and field. He was the only African-American on the football team and was unable to See STARGEL, Page 2B

Thomas More volleyball ranked 5th in nation Adam Turer Special to Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
With a historic regular season in the books, Thomas More University’s volleyball program has its sights set on making postseason history. The Saints finished the regular season 29-3, ranked fifth in the AVCA Coaches’ Poll. They handed top-ranked Calvin its only loss of the season. The schedule included seven contests against ranked opponents. The Saints went 5-2 in those matches. As they gear up for ACAA tournament play this weekend in New York, the
Saints are tuning up to advance beyond the first round of the NCAA tournament. Last year’s 29-win season ended in a hard-fought five-set heartbreaker in the opening round. “That match last year in the tournament, they realized how close they were. The very first match of this year, getting over the hump against a perennial national power in Ohio Northern. I think those two matches have really set things in to motion,” said head coach John Spinney. “The tournament experience is invaluable. The tough match experience, there’s no intimidation. We know it’s going to be a tough match and
here’s what we need to do. Our schedule this year more than any year, the fact that we’ve played so many great teams, that is going to pay dividends in the tournament.” Playing a national schedule this year now that they are no longer members of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference has helped to prepare the Saints for tournament play. “We knew we were going to have a really tough schedule and we would have to perform every night we were on the court. We all know that we can do it See VOLLEYBALL , Page 2B

Nazmi Albadawi to play internationally for Palestine

Nazmi Albadawi, a midfielder for Futbol Club Cincinnati in 2018, appears set to play his international soccer for Palestine. Palestine, a member football association in FIFA currently ranked No. 99 in the world, is reportedly calling Albadawi into its squad for November friendlies against Pakistan and China. Albadawi confirmed the news on Twitter. He also received a congratulatory tweet from FC Cincinnati head coach Alan Koch. Albadawi was FC Cincinnati’s thirdleading scorer in 2018 with 11 goals. He

now,” said junior outside hitter Madison Krumpelman (Holy Cross). “Last year with us being in the PAC, we conquered that conference but I don’t think going into the tournament we really knew what we were getting into. Playing this schedule this year is really setting us up for the tournament this year.” The Saints have pushed themselves in practices and offseason workouts since last season ended. The internal competition has been a driving force in getting the starters ready to face such a challenging regular season slate. “We have such amazing talent in the gym every day. Even the girls who don’t play bring so much to the table and push us to be as great as we are. This team is gritty,” said junior middle hitter Jenna Mummert (Clermont Northeastern).

made 29 league appearances for the club and started 26 times. It’s not publicly known whether Albadawi will remain with FC Cincinnati for the club’s jump to Major League Soccer in 2019.
"Everybody is really focused on doing their specific job, every day. We have a mentality to just play our game. We have a special thing here and that’s what we need to stay true to, our team identity which is our heart. We all have that heart to win and the fearlessness that it takes to beat a team like Calvin.” In that meeting against the topranked team in the nation, Krumpelman was meeting 6’3” blockers at the net. The Saints do not walk off the bus looking like a top five program. Mummert and freshman hitter Emily Mohs (Seton) are the only players list at six feet tall or above. “There are a lot of teams that are bigger and stronger than us and we have to be fearless to win,” said Mummert. “I would say that I knew we were great going into the season and we had a lot of potential. We knew this was going to be an exciting year with all the good teams we were playing, but I don’t think I knew we’d have a legit chance at winning a

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio High School Athletic Association has postponed Saturday’s state cross country tournament and is moving the championships to Saturday, Nov. 10, due to flooding conditions on the course at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Executive Director Jerry Snodgrass has announced. “While I wholeheartedly understand the impact this move has for all those involved in the event, this is the best solution for the safety and well-being of our participating student-athletes,” Snodgrass said. “National Trail Raceway has closed the course due to flooding with the on-going rain we have had in central Ohio, so the conditions will hopefully be much better by next weekend.” The schedule for the championships will be as follows: Saturday, Nov. 10, National Trail Raceway, Hebron 11:00 a.m. – Boys Division III 11:45 a.m. – Boys Division II 12:30 p.m. – Boys Division I 1:30 p.m. – Girls Division III 2:15 p.m. – Girls Division II 3:00 p.m. – Girls Division I The OHSAA will continue to update information on the cross country tournament on its website (www.ohsaa.org)
national championship.” Avenging last year’s first round exit has been on the players’ minds all season. “Falling just short in fifth set against Christopher Newport gave us experience that we needed. It showed us that we were right there, but we just didn’t finish,” said Krumpelman. “Coming into this year, we knew that there is more than practice that has to go into it. Working really hard helped set up our mentality that we can compete and go far in the tournament. “The leadership we have with our seniors has really pushed us to be better every day. We have one of the most competitive teams and most competitive practices. We’re all making each other better every day.” That senior leadership starts with Jenna Fessler. travel and play in some games, including UC’s 1947 Sun Bowl win. After school, Stargel decided to give back to his community and city. Later, he coached football, track and field and wrestling at Walnut Hills and his alma mater, Woodward. The school gave him the Medal of Honor in 1991. In 2010, he was elected into the Cincinnati Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame. So, if there was one person who was fit to have the namesake of the district’s main stadium, Stargel was an easy option. “It resonates every day. The naming of the stadium after Pops is an example, but Dad had such an impact on the community and the people that I get reminded today,” Jason, the youngest of five children, said. “...Dad had an impact that has outlived him. The stadium is a reflection of what he did for the commu-
nation’s top setters did not know if she would ever be able to play volleyball again. She was honored at the team’s Senior Night on Oct. 24. “She’s been through a lot. She’s meant a ton to our program,” Spinney said. “For her to be playing as a senior is a miracle in itself and to be playing so well. She loves the sport of volleyball. For her to be able to come back is a great story.” The Saints enter the 2018 postseason with as much confidence as ever. In their last season competing in Division III, they intend to keep this season going as long as they can. “That Calvin win was a watershed moment. We know that we’re a tough out. We also know that if we don’t play well, we get into trouble. We’re not going to be able to phone it in and win,” said Spinney. “But they also realize that they can beat anybody in the country and win a national title.”
nity and the people in the community, but yeah, I’m just so thankful and so honored they did this for him.” Stargel Stadium is engraved in the local community. More than 300 football games have been played there since its groundbreaking. Community sports and events were there, too. After Taft’s 28-8 win against Aiken, the Senators clinched both the Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference title and a home game in the OHSAA Tournament. No. 3 Taft hosts No. 6 London at the Division IV level. The next Stargel Stadium opens in 2019. Jason said it’s sad to see the current one go, but he’s excited to see what comes next. “Well, looking forward to the horizon,” he said. “I’m excited about what the stadium will look like next year. This is an awesome stadium, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the amount of games and the amount of teams that got to play at Stargel Stadium field. I think the future’s bright and I’m optimistic about what lays ahead next year at the new stadium.”

Westside secretary continues lifetime of service to St. Jude School When families are asked why they send their children to St. Jude many people respond with “welcoming community”, “sense of family.” “strong academics,” “vibrant faith” and “Mary Hornsby.” She knows each of the 464 students and their families personally and welcomes new families with open arms. When Mary Conners was an eighthgrader at St. Jude School back in the mid-70s, she went to the main office at lunchtime every day. There, she would answer phones at the secretary’s desk to cover her lunch hour. Little did she know, at the time that this was the beginning of what was to be a lifelong ministry. After marrying Rick Hornsby at St. Jude and working for a time at the IRS, Hornsby returned to her faith home. She initially returned as the church secretary for ten years before bringing her talents to the school. For the last 15 years, Hornsby has served as the school secretary of St. Jude. She is, quite literally, a lifelong member of the parish community. Her parents were founding members of the parish and her father even helped build the school. Besides attending grade school at St. Jude, she sent her four chil-
dren there and currently has a grandson in first grade at the school. Students, teachers, and families will tell you that St. Jude is a special place. To a person, they would also tell you that it’s an even more special place because of Hornsby. She is always willing to go above and beyond her administrative duties. Besides being the gatekeeper for pretty much everything that comes in or goes out of the school, Hornsby wears many hats at St. Jude. She’ll help organize school events, comfort crying children who are having a rough day, and will even step in to clean up rainy day puddles. Hornsby is a bright light at St. Jude. She encourages students to live up to their fullest potential and see the best in themselves. Hornsby is someone that kids and adults both learn from, through her personal commitment to excellence and her ability to make others realize their personal worth. She is a role model for what it means to be a kind and Christlike woman of faith. Every community, every school, every family, every teacher, and every child needs a Hornsby. At St. Jude, they are blessed to have the one and only. Lou Eichhold, St. Jude School
