Construction on run-down Price Hill Library begins in 2019 Rebecca Huff Special to Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
The Price Hill Branch Library is just one of the 41 branches of The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County that need a bit of a facelift. A 1-mill levy was passed in May to make the Price Hill library and others more accessible, but the Price Hill branch didn’t want to wait any longer. On July 3, part of the ceiling collapsed making the building unsafe for patrons. It is now the priority branch for the accessibility project. “We’re 100 percent committed to not just reopening the branch but improving the space, services and resources we provide to the Price Hill Community,” said Chris Rice, marketing manager for the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. Group 4 Architecture, Research + Planning has held two community sessions and created an online survey for community members unable to attend the sessions Sept. 26 and 27. Rice expects to have the survey results by the December board meeting. Construction is expected to begin during the second half of 2019. “We’re still gathering community input to get a strong sense of what the Price Hill community’s needs and preferences are,” Rice said. The next community session will be held on Nov. 28 at the Price Hill Recreation Center. An open house will be from 5:30-7 p.m. with a formal meeting right afterward ending at 8 p.m.
Miami Township voters were still waiting to learn if zoning in the township would consolidate under Hamilton County Rural Zoning. Results were not released because some voters who were not eligible to vote on the measure may have had the issue on their ballot Nov. 6. PROVIDED/GERI MEISTER
Miami Township vote on zoning issue is in Jennie Key Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
It’s been weeks since Miami Township residents voted on a change to zoning on their community. On Wednesday, Nov. 21, they learned they said no. The proposed plan would have eliminated zoning by precinct and would have unified the unincorporated areas of the township under the Hamilton County Rural Zoning Commission. The results were held back under a restraining order by Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Patrick Dinkelacker. It blocked the Hamilton County Board of Elections from releasing the outcome of the Nov. 6 vote while officials decided whose votes would count in the election. When the issue was put on the ballot, the Board of Elections believed that it was directed to submit the question to all of the voters in Miami Township, in-

cluding those who live within the four precincts serving the incorporated villages of North Bend, Addyston and Cleves. Specifically these are Addyston A, Cleves A and B, and North Bend A. The Miami Township county rural zoning plan – designated Issue 32 – was placed on the ballot for all voters and that caused a problem. Ohio law said voters in the villages weren’t eligible voters on the zoning question. But when the problem was discovered, ballots were already printed and absentee ballots containing Hamilton County Issue 32 were already mailed to voters who requested them. Dinkelacker ruled votes from the four village precincts would not be counted. When the official account happened Wednesday, voters said no. The official results, which were certified at 3 p.m. last Wednesday: 2,610 or 54 percent said no and 46 percent – 2,263 – were in favor of the change.

Ohio and Kentucky health departments have declared outbreaks of hepatitis A. Clermont County Public Health identified a case of hepatitis A in an employee at the Felicity IGA grocery store at 412 Light St. in Felicity. The health officials asked that anyone who’s eaten food from the deli at the Felicity IGA from Oct. 31- Nov.13 monitor for symptoms for up to 50 days. Hepatitis A is a vaccine-preventable virus that attacks the liver. It’s caused by a virus and usually is transmitted person-to-person through a fecal-oral route or by eating or drinking contaminated food products. It can also be spread through close personal contact with an infected person, such as through sex or caring for someone who is ill.It can be spread among injection drug users by sharing needles, too. “Vaccination is the best way to prevent hepatitis A,” said Hamilton County Health Commissioner Tim Ingram. “If you are in one of the risk categories or you have been exposed to someone with hepatitis A, contact your healthcare provider to discuss vaccination.” Frequent handwashing is recommended to prevent spreading the disease.

New Youth Restoring The Drama Workshop Pill Helps You Grow to present ‘A Taffeta Biologically Younger Christmas’ PAID ADVERTISEMENT
Based on groundbreaking research from UC Davis, anti-aging pioneer creates the world’s first lifeextension pill that boosts the energy center of cells By Ray Wilson Associated Health Press AHP − Researchers at the University of California, Davis, have discovered a new compound that has the amazing ability to reverse the aging process in cells, extending lifespan and restoring health. The compound was immediately formulated into an all-natural pill which adults and seniors, from all over the country, are now taking every day. Sold under the brand name Ultra Accel II, the new once-daily pill can significantly improve many of the ailments associated with aging including memory and recall, heart and lung function, poor immunity, and low energy levels. According to the pill’s developers, it may also increase the average lifespan to 146 years old, shattering the current U.S. average of 78.
Dr. Al Sears with fellow physician Dr. Oz at the WPBF 25 Health & Wellness Festival held in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Research shows the pill works by triggering the growth of new mitochondria in the body’s most important organs, a phenomenon known as mitochondrial biogenesis.
With daily use I noticed my endurance, memory, vision and even the appearance of my skin and hair improved. It was truly amazing.”
Scientists long believed this was impossible to experience after a certain age. But the new research proves that it can now be achieved at any age with Ultra Accel II.
Two key ingredients make up the Ultra Accel II softgel. The first is a patented form of PQQ called BioPQQ. The second is Ubiquinol, the most effective form of CoQ10.
Energizes the Body’s Most Vital Organs Mitochondria are found in all cells (and there are trillions of them in your body), They produce the cellular energy required by your organs to function. In the most energy-demanding organs, like the brain and heart, there can be as many as 2,000 mitochondria per cell. And according to a landslide of clinical data, the health of these mitochondria determines our level of health and how long we live. When organs lack the cellular energy they require to work at a 100% efficiency, your health deteriorates and you age faster. This is why mitochondria dysfunction are the root of many problems associated with growing older. Low energy, fatigue, muscle weakness, memory loss, poor immunity, skin aging, and blood sugar problems, are often the result of an energy crisis in your cells. But now, for the first time ever, there’s a fix for the estimated 50 million adults and seniors who suffer — often unknowingly — from these ailments. “With daily use, Ultra Accel II helps users feel more energetic and vital. Many also notice significant improvements in brain, heart, and lung function too,” explains Dr. Al Sears, creator of the Ultra Accel II pill. “And that’s because Ultra Accel II multiplies the number of youthful mitochondria in every cell of your body in every important organ and tissue. The result is an enormous spike in cellular energy that literally reverses your biological clock. In laymen terms, you grow younger.”
The University Study That Started the Anti-Aging Movement Dr. Sears’ inspiration for Ultra Accel II came after reviewing the new study published by researchers at UC Davis. These researchers discovered that when mice were fed the natural compound called PQQ the number of mitochondria in their cells multiplied. In eight weeks they saw a staggering 55% increase in young, youthful mitochondria. Even more remarkable was the fact that the mice with the strongest mitochondria showed no signs of aging even when they were the equivalent to 80 years old. “After reading the study on PQQ, I immediately called my manufacturer. He explained to me PQQ was incredibly hard to source but after a few months I finally got my hands on some and successfully blended it into a softgel” explains Dr. Sears. “I was the first to try it. After the first dose I felt an immediate boost in energy.
Science of Age Reversal
Research shows that as we get older the number of mitochondria in our cells declines sharply. In fact, by age 67 nearly 80% of the mitochondria we had at 25 have died. This dramatic decline can trigger many serious health problems including heart failure, memory loss and relentless fatigue. It can also cause the skin to look older and accelerate the overall aging process. The BioPQQ in Ultra Accel II is one of the only known compounds to actually multiply the number of mitochondria in your cells! And just like a power cord, the Unbiquinol has the amazing ability to energize these new, youthful mitochondria so that they are fully charged.
Patients Hail Improvements in Health and a Deceleration in Aging The initial feedback from patients using Ultra Accel II has been strong. Many say they have never felt better. “I’m a 70-year-old man and I’ve been taking Accel for 2 1/2 months. On a recent treadmill stress test, I was told that I did as well as several patients tested who were in their 20s,” raves one user. Adds another: “I noticed a difference within a few days. My endurance almost doubled. But it’s not just in your body. You can feel it mentally too,”
Changing the Way We Age Ultra Accel II is an exciting new antiaging pill that’s now helped thousands of people reclaim their energy, vitality, and youth regardless of their age or health status. With daily use, it can help you look and feel decades younger and sidestep the illnesses that accompany aging and can make life hard. You can now regain boundless energy, new vigor and physical capabilities you enjoyed in your youth.

Wine-soaked raisins a simple, sophisticated treat Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld
Sometimes the simplest recipes are the best. The Chardonnay-soaked golden raisins I’m sharing fit that description. Not only is it easy, it’s quite sophisticated and morphs from appetizer to gift from the kitchen. I had a Kentucky reader concerned about chocolate with a whitish coating that developed on top. “What is it and should I toss it?” he asked. Read on to find out.
Readers want to know What is that white or gray stuff on chocolate? Is it safe to eat? First, the chocolate is perfectly safe to eat, it’s just not the prettiest kid on the block. White flecks, spots, streak, gray splotches are signs of either what’s called a “fat” or “sugar” bloom. Both are natural occurrences. Here’s why: Fat bloom: Occurs usually from temperature changes. Looks like a waxy whitish coating that forms due to cocoa butter or milk fats moving through and winding up crystalizing on the surface. You’ll see gray splotches on the chocolate. (It occurs more in less expensive chocolates that haven’t been tempered as well as the more expensive ones. Tempering is a process that stabilizes the sugars and fats). Sugar bloom:Occurs usually from moisture in the package drawing out the sugars, making them crystalize on the surface. This bloom is usually dry and might make your chocolate feel a bit sandy or gritty. Preventing fat/sugar bloom: Store chocolate in a cool environment. Some experts say the best temperature is 64 degrees. I have stored mine in the door of the refrigerator and in the pantry with equal success. Fixing fat/sugar bloom: No worries. If you don’t want to eat it, just melt it down. (I had to do this with some chocolate clusters I made).

Viewpoints Education key to ending homeless crisis Emily Parsons Guest Columnist Community Press USA TODAY NETWORK
Most people can describe their daily routine with this generic chronology: They wake up, go to work, come home, go to bed and start the cycle all over again. Why can’t all people relate to this statement? It is because there are millions of people experiencing homelessness across the United States. Cincinnati has one of the worst homelessness crises in the country, and it is only getting worse. Whether or not one has a home does not affect a central part of being human, however – all human beings have dignity and should be treated as such. Why, then, do we treat people experiencing homelessness differently? Many people experiencing homelessness are denied their dignity every day. I believe the biggest contributor to our societal discrimination is due to the lack of education about homelessness. I was fortunate enough to be thoroughly educated about poverty and homelessness in Cincinnati this past summer by going on the Saint Vincent de Paul Immersion mission trip. The trip opened my eyes to the realities of poverty. I never realized that the poverty rate in Cincinnati was so high, never realized that you only ever see 10 percent of the people experiencing homelessness, never realized that the average age of a person experiencing homelessness is nine years old. Worst of all, we as a society are criminalizing people experiencing homelessness, not realizing that any individual could experience homelessness at any time due to unfortunate circumstances. People don’t want to face the fact that homelessness could happen to anyone. And, guess what? There is so much that we can do to help people experiencing homelessness, whether it be immediate relief or systemic change. There are numerous ways to provide immediate relief, including: ❚ Donating food, clothing, money, or time to organizations such as Saint Vincent de Paul. ❚ Next time you are out and about in downtown, bring extra protein bars and water bottles for people ex-

periencing homelessness. ❚ Volunteer work, such as helping at a food pantry, or serving other non-profit organizations. However, temporary relief is not the only aspect of the eradication of homelessness; we are lacking affordable housing. Affordable housing is defined as 30 percent of an individual’s yearly income. Based on a study conducted by the National Low Income Housing Coalition, if an individual is making minimum wage in Cincinnati, he or she would need to work 78 hours per week to afford a two-bedroom rental home. This is 11 hours per day, every day. However, it is not usually just one individual experiencing homelessness, but, instead, a family. As I stated,
the average age of a person experiencing homelessness is nine years old. Does anyone expect a fourth-grader to be working a minimum-wage job so that his or her family can have a roof over their heads? The lack of affordable housing is a major cause of homelessness. If we can eradicate this lack, then the homelessness crisis will begin to diminish. I have only scratched the surface of the truth about homelessness. I encourage you to continue to learn and help those around you, so that one day no one in Cincinnati is living below the poverty line. This is a feasible goal if we all start taking action. Emily Parsons lives in Cleves and is a senior at Mercy McAuley High School.

He has run thousands of miles to be in shape, he has kept his legs limber with more stretching than a yoga-thon. And now he is here, at the 37-yard line (always the 37, never the 36 or the 38) doing The Strut of a lifetime. Thomas Unger, Ohio State senior, LaSalle High grad, sousaphone player deluxe, will dot the I on Script Ohio Saturday before the Buckeyes play Michigan. If you think this guy’s not a jock, run two miles in August, in a wool coat with a 35-pound dog in your backpack. OK. I hear you. You don’t care about Ohio State.

Unger and his marching bandmates were on buses, en route to New York for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. After 10 hours in the bus, they woke up at 1:30 Thursday morning, for a parade dress rehearsal. You gotta play hurt in the band game. Unger called the sousaphone “a tuba you can wear.’’ Have you seen this thing? It looks like a metal anaconda with a mouth you could live in. A 35pound hunk of shiny noise. “People have back problems,’’ said Unger. “You get sore with it hanging on your shoulder all day.’’ He started playing as a junior at La Salle, with no aspirations of being an Idotter. “I didn’t grow up an Ohio State fan,’’ Unger said. “I was looking for a big state school that had a good engineering program.’’ That changed when he got to campus. “I play tuba and I’m going to Ohio State, why not take that opportunity?’’ Auditions are in August. Wannabe band members are expected to know all the fight songs, so they can start practicing with the band in June. That guarantees them nothing. “You can spend a whole summer practicing and you might not make the team,’’ Unger said. The band takes 28 sousaphone players. There is a distinct pecking order for dotting the I. Seniority rules, and you have to be a fourth- or fifth-year senior. To be an I-guy (or gal) some sousaphoners have been known to stay with the band one or two years after they’ve graduated. And what of The Strut? You know, those last several Rockette steps, when the dotter can bust his nose with his knee if he’s slightly over-enthused? “I’ve been practicing it since last spring,’’ Unger said. It requires a degree of flex most of us have never had. It demands an aerobic excellence we don’t possess. As Unger
Thomas Unger SUBMITTED
pointed out, “It takes a lot of air to play a sousaphone.’’ He dotted the I once already this year, at an away game against TCU. It was a double-script Ohio, so he shared the spotlight with another dotter. And of course, it wasn’t a home game. And it wasn’t Michigan. As for the mouthpiece. . . There’s a chance it jiggles loose during all that choreography, then falls out, mid-Strut. “You’re not in a position to pick it up,’’ Unger noted. Once the I is dotted, the dotter leads the band in the Buckeye Battle Cry. Amid all the precision, there is a plan for a dropped mouthpiece. A designated backup sousaphone-ist watches from another side of the field, ready to step in. Saturday, the 192 members of the band will don their World War I-based uniforms, march to St. John Arena for the Skull Session, then march to the top of the Ohio Stadium ramp inside the rotunda. Twenty-two minutes before kickoff, they will march down the ramp and onto the field. “Suddenly the whole crowd is in front of you. Such a huge rush,’’ Unger described. “Nothing like it.’’ About five minutes into things, Thomas Unger, marching right behind the drum major, will break off, strut, dot, bow twice east and west and play the fight song. Unger’s goal is to slow down time, to have his moment so down, he doesn’t think of the technique, he merely lives the joy. The whole sequence will take fewer than two minutes. Such a short time, for a lifetime.
