DELHI TOWNSHIP – There are some friends who remain friends for life, regardless of how often you connect. You may go for months between visits, you may just write letters during the holidays or you may have lost touch over the years, but it’s amazing that when you do meet again, it’s as if you’ve never parted. There is an instant bond that lets you pick up where you left off, sharing memories and reconnecting the dots on life’s journey. Maybe you attended the same school, worked together or experienced marriage and family life at the same times. Your personalities just click, and you treasure your time together. That’s how it is for Lavern Graham and her longtime friend, Agnes Reilly. They met on a Forest Park tee-ball field in 1959, both pushing strollers while watching their children hit balls and run bases. Turns out their husbands, each named Tom, were both coaches for the team. Lavern and Agnes struck up a conversation and launched their 60-year friendship. Agnes and Tom Reilly grew up on Staten Island, New York. They met at a beach party when they were only 16 and Agnes was smitten by the tall, handsome basketball player. Agnes says it was “love at first story.” Lavern and Tom, both from Bellevue, Ky., used to play together as children when their parents, also longtime friends, would visit. But it wasn’t until Tom returned from three years in the Navy that they began their courtship. After each married, they settled in Forest Park, which at the time was a newly developed suburb of Cincinnati.
The West Side’s favorite son, Pete Rose, owned a restaurant briefly in what many consider the heart of Western Hills. CINCINNATI ENQUIRER FIL E

You won’t find it on a map. But when many people who live in Cincinnati’s western suburbs go home for the holidays, they go home to Western Hills. Like finding your way through much of the West Side, identifying exactly where Western Hills is can be confusing, even for people who live there.

So where do Western Hills residents call home? “You’ll never find it on a map but it does exist in our opinion,” said Paul Brettschneider, 72, a Delhi Township resident who grew up in Westwood. Brettschneider defines Western Hills like this: It’s Western Hills University High School (his alma mater), Cheviot and Westwood. Price Hill native and Hamilton County Commissioner Denise Driehaus draws a different boundary. She

grew up thinking Western Hills was anywhere in Green Township outside of the city of Cincinnati. “If you look at different maps and they identify different areas of the West Side as this, that and the other thing,” Driehaus said. “The area that they call Western Hills, everyone knows that lives over there where it’s at. It generally means anyone that lives outside the city on the West See WESTERN HILLS, Page 1A

Fast forward to that tee-ball game. From that first day, Agnes and Lavern were BFFs (Best Friends Forever) Both were members of Our Lady of the Rosary Church and as their families grew, so did their bond. The friends shared the usual mom duties, which included cafeteria worker, bake sale volunteer and booster club members. There came a time when the Reillys, with eight boys, moved to College Hill and the Grahams with four boys and two girls, moved to Finneytown to accommodate their growing families. This separation did not deter their friendship. The boys from each family attended St. Xavier, which equated to numerous Mother’s Club meetings and more volunteering. Time marches on and although their school duties decreased, their connection did not. Lavern and Agnes carved out time to play tennis together every Wednesday and when that got
more difficult, they switched to golf. They would talk for long periods of time on the phone or meet at LaRosa’s to get caught up on the latest family news. Later, when both became widows, they decided to make another move – Agnes to Twin Towers and Lavern to Bayley. In November of 2017, Agnes came to Bayley for rehabilitation and decided to make this her home. You can imagine the welcome she received from her beloved friend Lavern. Lavern and Agnes love the fact that they are once again neighbors. Today they sit side by side at daily Mass and enjoy each other’s company at meals and activities. They see each other’s children when they come to visit and spend hours together reminiscing about those “good old days.” There’s a lot of ground to cover in a 59-year friendship, not to mention the 87 grandchildren and great-grandchildren now in the picture. Bayley is a senior living and wellness community on the west side of Cincinnati, offering programs and services to those residing on our campus and in the community. bayleylife.org Kathy Baker, Bayley

Wish List: Help this Lower Price Hill resident get mobile again Erin Couch Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
The Enquirer and United Way of Greater Cincinnati have joined forces for the 32nd year to promote the Wish List giving season, assisting families in need. Today, we share the story of Kim Yocum. Who is in need? Before Kim Yocum lost her right leg in her battle with coronary artery disease and pulmonary artery disease, she was a walker: She would walk through the park with her family, walk up the hill to the grocery store, walk around her garden tending to her flowers and tomato plants. Now, she’s a little less mobile than before. “Walking was my thing,” Yocum, 50, said. “I miss it. I miss all the things I can’t do.” Yocum lives in Lower Price Hill with her husband of 33 years Doug, two of her three children and eight beloved critters. She also has a 1-year-old granddaughter named Kylie Lynn whom she tries to “steal” for days at a time until her mom decides to break up the party. What life challenges are they overcoming? Yocum’s leg was amputated three years ago when her right leg started accumulating so many blood clots that no more stents could be installed in her arteries to save her. Since then, simple tasks like walking up the stairs pose a challenge with an artificial leg, Yocum said. She can hardly get up her two porch steps, let alone upstairs to her bedroom. Her coronary and pulmonary artery diseases have left her with artery stents in her heart and her remaining knee. She has also undergone more than 21 angiograms. She had to have a pig artery

implanted in her left leg, which has been an unsure process. “Now it’s a fight to make sure I don’t lose this one,” Yocum said. Falling up the stairs has become a common problem, she said. Once she severely broke her nose. Their wish list? Yocum is in need of a few ways to increase her mobility. She needs a banister on her porch that will help her get up the porch to her house. A lift chair to her second floor would make it easier for her to get up to her bedroom. Having funds to replace her scooter’s battery would help her get back to doing things she enjoys — like getting up the hill to see the view at Shawnee Lookout. “To be able to get back up in that park would be a dream come true,” Yocum said. “It would be something I’d never thought I’d be able to do again.” Yocum hopes to raise $3,500 for everything she needs. Western Hills Continued from Page 1A
Side, primarily Green Township.”
So what is Western Hills? As best anyone can tell, Western Hills is an area, not a place. Western Hills University High School, founded in 1928 bears the name. As does one of the region’s biggest infrastructure headaches, the Western Hills Viaduct in Queensgate. Many West Siders would argue neither is in Western Hills. It joins the ranks of many other vague areas on the West Side. These include Covedale, Bridgetown, Dent and Mack. All of these, while not technically neighborhoods or cities, are recognized by the Census Bureau for tracking population. But not Western Hills. Even Wikipedia, which has an entry on everything, doesn’t know how to define Western Hills, simply calling it an “area” in a three-sentence entry that points out various shopping centers and malls. Local historians have said Western Hills is a catch-all term for all the western suburbs. “It’s sort of a name given to the West Side neighborhoods,” said Paul Ruffing, president of the Green Township Historical Association. “If you ask 10 different people, you get 10 different answers. I can’t give you a specific answer. It’s an amorphous cloud that hangs over multiple neighborhoods.”
It goes all the way to Rome Even the identity and existence of the hills is questioned. Cincinnati gets its name from the Roman general Cincinnatus. As such, Cincinnati and Rome have shared a link for more than 200 years. Cincinnati has also shared Rome’s nickname, the “City of Seven Hills.” Historians dispute whether there are actually seven hills in Cincinnati.
An ad in a June 1875 edition of The Enquirer touts a new incline bringing rapid transit to the "Western Hills" CINCINNATI ENQUIRER FILE
“There are no seven hills,” Cincinnati historian Dan Hurley told The Enquirer in 1997. “The reference has nothing to do with our geography. It has to do with the city being named after the Roman soldier Cincinnatus.” Whether the hills exist, the region to the west of central Cincinnati has been called the “western hills” as far back as the 1850s. Patrick Considine, “an old, esteemed citizen of Storrs Township,” donated five acres “on the brow of one of the Western hills overlooking the valley in which our city is located,” the Cincinnati Daily Press proclaimed on July 1, 1859, in one of the earliest references to Western Hills. The newspaper was covering a commencement ceremony of priests at St. Mary’s of the West Seminary, which was located on five acres in present-day East Price Hill.
A family inspects baked goods in 1958 at the Western Hills Plaza. ENQUIRER FILE
The Western Hills took off after the Civil War A year later in the same newspaper, a classified ad offered to rent 25 acres of “land on the Western Hills” in Storrs and Millcreek townships a “half-mile” from Cincinnati. The land had “never-fail springs,” a small vineyard and orchards. The term Western Hills caught on after the Civil War as more people moved west. The Price Hill Incline opened in 1875 with an ad in The Enquirer that year heralding rapid transit “now for the Western Hills!” The Cincinnati Street Railway Co. extended streetcar service to the West Side in the 1890s, residential development grew. Between 1890 and 1910, Westwood and Cheviot’s population tripled, according to the Bicentennial Guide to Greater Cincinnati published by the Cincinnati Historical Society. Then the name of Western Hills began to proliferate. Western Hills High School opened in
1928. The Western Hills Viaduct opened 1932. The heyday of Western Hills may have peaked in 1954 when Western Hills Plaza shopping center opened at the corner of Werk Road and Glenway Avenue in Westwood. The $5 million shopping center opened to much fanfare on property that previously held a portion of the estate of Procter & Gamble founder James M. Gamble. That’s $47 million in today’s dollars. The Enquirer heralded it as Cincinnati’s suburban shopping mecca with 31 inaugural stores. The plaza is still seen as the centerpiece of Western Hills. One thing’s for sure, Western Hills exists. Even if people can’t agree on a map of it. “Western Hills would run all the way down Glenway Avenue, up to the Western Hills Plaza,” said Anthony Como, 60. “There’s a line there somewhere, I don’t know where it’s at.” “I live in Bridgetown.” Enquirer librarian Jeff Suess contributed

Make biscotti your way, learn tricks for good rib roast Cranberry almond biscotti
Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld
Well, you’ll never guess who just emailed me about Busken Bakery’s beloved Boston brown bread. (Some of you will remember that they used to serve it at their restaurant in Downtown Cincinnati). None other than Dan Busken, President and CEO. Dan thinks he may be able to find it, and if so, I’ll share it with you. When I was testing the cranberry almond biscotti recipe, my husband, Frank, kept taking slices off the baking sheet before I could bake them a second time (biscotti means twice baked). A darn good testimonial, wouldn’t you say? Check out the foolproof recipe for standing beef rib roast, too. Save the bones for bone broth. You’ll find a recipe on my site.
Perfect standing beef rib roast
Maybe you’d like to sub in cherries for cranberries, or pistachios for the almonds. How about chopped apricots? Or a few more nuts and no fruit, or vice versa? Ingredients 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder Couple pinches salt ⁄4 cup dried cranberries
3
1 cup chopped, slivered or sliced almonds, toasted in a 350 degree oven for 7 minutes, or just until fragrant 2 large eggs ⁄4 cup vegetable oil
1
This roast is expensive, and a loyal reader shared this recipe. “Similar to the way Cooks Illustrated recommends roasting beef,” she said. Start roasting it at a high temperature to sear outside and then roast it really slow so that it stays moist inside. First, season as you like. Place ribs side down in a sprayed pan and roast at 450 for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 250 and roast until thermometer reads about 125 for rare; up to 145 for medium or so. The roast continues to cook at least 5 degrees more when it’s out of the oven. Let it rest, tented with foil, for about 20 minutes before carving.

Watch for scams this holiday season Sandra Guile Guest Columnist Community Press USA TODAY NETWORK
The 2018 holiday season is here and with it comes an abundance of activities, like trimming trees, decking the halls, and plenty of to-do lists. This provides scammers plenty of perfect opportunities to use people’s distraction for their own gain. Some scam artists got an early start, swapping out UPC codes on the backside of gift cards with fake ones before the Thanksgiving holiday. This meant that when a customer bought one of the cards with a false UPC, the money that should’ve activated the card was redi-
rected to the scammer’s account. When buying gift cards either for personal use or as a gift for someone else, double check the package containing the card. Look for signs that it has been tampered with or if anything’s been placed over the original barcode. If you do find a defective card, report it to the retailer immediately. Another common scam that occurs during the holidays is the package delivery scam. Because the volume of online orders goes up during the holiday season, the U.S. Postal Service expects to deliver more than 15 billion pieces of mail and 900 million packages between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. This is the prime time for a scammer to say they’re with a popular shipping company, like Amazon or UPS, and ask for per-

sonal information. Not only can this scam be perpetuated over the phone or online, but some scammers will also leave a note that includes a phone number or website on the door of their intended victim, indicating that they need to use those contact methods for the package to be delivered. Once they call or email, the scam is the same, the person on the other end asks for sensitive data in exchange for the parcel. Before calling the number on the note, look up the contact information to make sure it’s not part of a scam. If you do call and they begin asking questions rather than offering to schedule a delivery, hang up. Any mention of payment or personal information should be a red flag. Remember, most shipping services
allow you to check the status of your delivery by signing up for text or email alerts. Many will attempt to deliver a package at least three times before contacting you directly. This holiday season, do your part to promote goodwill to all. If you suspect a call, a note, or email might be part of a scam, report it to BBB’s Scam Tracker to keep the season merry and bright. Thank you, voters in the 30th Ohio House District My deepest gratitude goes out to the voters in the 30th Ohio House District for their resounding vote of confidence that secured my re-election. In a difficult year for Republicans in Hamilton County, the voters in Green and Delhi Townships, Cheviot, and West Price Hill bucked the trend. Thanks to all who voted. I will con-
tinue to be the pragmatic conservative that I have always been and provide the constituent service that citizens deserve when navigating the state bureaucracy. Thanks again, and Happy Holidays to all. Bill Seitz Green Township

Sports FC Cincinnati to break ground on West End stadium with Dec. 18 ceremony Pat Brennan Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

Whispers about FC Cincinnati’s groundbreaking for its new stadium started more than a month ago, and now the formal ceremony to break ground on the West End site the club will call home has been formalized. FC Cincinnati will officially break ground in the city’s West End neighborhood with a Dec. 18 ceremony scheduled for 4 p.m., according to a Friday morning release. The event will occur at marked entrances near the rear of Taft High School and West 15th Street. Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber will be in attendance, along with FC Cincinnati managing owner Carl Lindner III, team President and General Manager Jeff Berding and City of Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley, among other community and municipal
leaders. According to the club, the first 2,000 attendees will be given a commemorative shovel upon entering the site. After a short speaking program including Garber, Lindner, Berding, and Cranley, among many others – everyone in attendance will be signaled to conduct the ceremonial groundbreaking together as a community, the team said in its news release. The ceremony signifies the start of formal construction at the club’s future MLS stadium location, which is expected to be completed by March 2021 and open with the start of the season. The whispers grew in City Hall and in the local soccer community started months ago. A local adult soccer league was displaced so the tear-down could begin at the Stargel Stadium site. In recent weeks, that tear down has started in full public view.
On and off field, Kyle Rudolph keeps giving value to Vikings Associated Press
EAGAN, Minn. — Kyle Rudolph’s value to the Minnesota Vikings could easily be taken for granted at this stage of his career, given his streak of 61 consecutive games started that’s the longest active run by a tight end in the NFL – prior to Monday’s game. Whether his contributions have been fully appreciated or not, Rudolph has continually carried a significant presence for the team on and off the field. Three quarters of the way through the 2018 schedule, Rudolph is on pace for the second-most statistically productive season of his career with 46 receptions for 463 yards, trailing only 2016. His catch rate of 76.7 percent out of 60 targets is his highest since he was a secondround draft pick out of Notre Dame in 2011. Rudolph’s durability is at the forefront of his player portfolio these days. Attitude, intelligence and awareness have long been cited as strengths by his coaches and teammates. But any evaluation of the 6-foot-6, 265-pound Rudolph inevitably circles back to those oven mitts he has long used to haul in all those passes in traffic. “If the ball is in his general direction, he catches it. He brings it in one way or another, makes the tough catch,” quarterback Kirk Cousins said. “That’s a trait that I really appreciate. He’s proven it time and time again, so I’m excited to just continue to put the ball in his general area and let him bring it in.” Rudolph collected only two receptions in each of the two games preceding the game against Green Bay on Nov. 25. Coincidentally or not, the offense was ordinary at best on those days, a win against Detroit and a loss at Chicago. During the week leading up to the Packers game, Rudolph met with coach Mike Zimmer to air his concern, not out of selfimportance but rather to reiterate his confidence in being able to help the team move the ball and score once it nears the See RUDOLPH, Page 2B

Then Rudolph had seven catches by halftime, as the Vikings went on to beat Green Bay for their most important win in more than a month. “I felt like I could help our team and it kind of clicked there,”he said. With 39 touchdown receptions, Rudolph held the career Vikings record for tight ends, and had 101 career starts, both before entering Minnesota’s game at Seattle on Monday night. “I still feel like I have a lot of football left in me, hopefully another 100,” Rudolph said. Rudolph was announced as the team’s nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award for community service. Rudolph and his wife, Jordan, have led and funded outreach at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital for sick kids. The Vikings produced a video celebrating the honor , featuring interviews with children, parents and staff who’ve been affected by his effort as well as an emotional Rudolph crying as he read their thank you letters to him. “Getting to know these people, getting to know their families, being welcomed into their families, we say all the time, ‘Some of our happiest memories are when we get to reconnect with these families once they’re out of the hospital,’” Rudolph said.

Funding for marker caps off Cheviot’s Bicentennial year Cheviot’s Bicentennial Committee is very excited to have been awarded a historical marker at Harvest Home Park through a highly competitive process. The marker project received $1,000 in grant funding from Ohio History Connection (formerly the Ohio Historical Society) and $2,000 from the CheviotWestwood Kiwanis Club. The marker highlights the importance of Enoch Carson, founder of Cheviot and whose land is now home to Harvest Home Park, along with the annual Harvest Home celebration held there since 1860. To commemorate Carson and Harvest Home Park, the Ohio Historical Marker will be placed at the entrance to the Park mid-summer 2019. Original cobblestones from Harrison Avenue will be placed around the base of the marker. “We’d like to give special thanks to
Greg Kissel, with the Westwood Historical Society, for the volume of historical research he conducted for the grant application,” says Bicentennial Co-Chair Kathy Goedl. “He and Rich Martin, with the Cheviot Historical Society, were the movers and shakers for the historic marker.” Text on the two-sided marker covers the early history of Cheviot and Harvest Home Park, starting with the Carson family settling in Green Township in 1809 and then Cheviot in 1818. The first Green Township Harvest Home festivities were held in 1860 at Carson’s grove (today known as Harvest Home Park). Cheviot purchased the property in 1925 to preserve the heritage of Harvest Home. In 1939 the Kiwanis Club of Cheviot-Westwood took over and expanded the event, which continues today. Caroline Statkus, City of Cheviot

CCSAR joins 64th Pearl Harbor Memorial At noon on Dec. 2, the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (CCSAR) joined members of the Chambers Hartman Budde American Legion Post 534, the Hamilton County Sheriffs Pipes & Drums and several other Veterans groups for the 64th Ceremony to remember the attack on Pearl Harbor and honor the 2,403 citizens of the United States who were killed in the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941. The Day that President Roosevelt said on national radio would “live in Infamy.” The parade from River Road is short in length, but very long on spirit. son Ferry. Once the vessel is loaded it is powered out on to the Ohio River where a bugler on the barge mirrors a bugler on the shore with a spine-tingling rendition of Taps. Following was a proper military prayer and presentation led by the American Legion Post 534 and a rifle salute. Finally, bio-friendly wreaths were placed on to the water mimicking the ritual one would see on Dec. 7 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Silence followed, marked only by the straining engine of the tugboat slowly returning the 70 plus attendees back to shore. The ceremony was a reverent and fitting remembrance for those who fought suffered and even died, so we would remain free. God bless America. Michael Gunn, CCSAR
Flag retirement attended by CCSAR In the morning on Dec. 2, the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (CCSAR) once again joined the Chambers Hautman Budde American Legion Post 534 at their lodge on 4818 River Road for their annual Flag Retirement Ceremony. American Legion Color Guard members joined their Safety team at the burn pit site, along with 10 members of the CCSAR Nolan Carson Memorial Color Guard and its seven-member Musket Unit. The Post 534 Commander confirmed readiness of the Flag Retirement Burn Team and requested the verbal assurance that each of the flags to be retired met their service requirements. A Prayer followed with homage to all those
who’ve flown these banners and hope for the replacements to be properly honored. After all units were brought to Attention and “Present Arms” declared, the musket unit fired their flintlocks to set off the actual incineration. A proper and honorable end to our National Colors. Michael Gunn, CCSAR
