ROGER BACON SETS STAGE FOR ACHIEVEMENT Roger Bacon High School was established in 1928, but has continuously made improvements to keep up with the times and the ideals of the Franciscan education and its goals to develop the mind, body, heart and soul of the students entrusted to its care. Among the improvements is use of new technology to enhance learning and an exciting new program for high-achieving students. “Starting in fall 2012, the iPad will be the new technology used at Roger Bacon,” said Brandon Cowans, director of Admissions and Communications for the school. “Each incoming student will receive the new iPad loaded with their textbooks, the Roger Bacon

app package and access to the world at their fingertips.” With thousands of apps to choose from, students will have the opportunity to take notes, write papers, create presentations, spreadsheets, tables and charts to master the technology skills needed to compete successfully in today’s world. One of the ways students will be using their new iPads is in a new program designed for the 2012-13 freshmen honors students. Students will be exposed to learning activities at school and in the culturally rich and historic environment of the Cincinnati community. “The Assisi Scholars Program is the most unique and selective

program in the city for high-achieving students,” explained Cowans. Students must successfully complete a two-tier admission process to become an Assisi Scholar. First, incoming ninth-grade students will apply to be part of the Roger Bacon Honors Program by submitting an application that includes recommendations and information about grades, activities and interests. This process also includes participating in an interview with the Honors Program admissions committee. After successful completion of the freshman honors program, students may apply for the next, more challenging step in their journey – The Assisi

Scholars Program. Those selected to be Assisi Scholars (named for St. Francis of Assisi, the founder of the Franciscan movement) will continue their rigorous academic curriculum throughout high school. In addition to course work, students will attend special events and workshops designed to enrich their education, including: » Attending school and evening speakers and events » Participating in study-skills and teambuilding activities offered during the academic year and summer seminars » Enhancing interview skills for college and job opportunities

» Enrolling in a PSAT prep course at no additional cost » Shadowing professionals in a career path of interest to the student » Taking part in college, business and other professional visits organized by the program » Having a unique Scholars App package on the iPad to support study efforts At the culmination of their program, scholars are sent on a pilgrimage to Assisi, Italy. This opportunity is unique to Roger Bacon and its Franciscan heritage, allowing students to travel the world and walk in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Clare. CARDINAL PACELLI AMBASSADORS For the past seven years, Cardinal Pacelli has partnered with the International School-toSchool Experience (ISSE) to give students the experience of total cultural immersion. Last spring, a delegation of 10 sixth graders and two teachers traveled to Guayaquil, Ecuador, for a two-week stay. ISSE is a unique student-exchange program geared toward middleschool students. Based in Louisville, Ky., the organization believes

young people of this age make ideal ambassadors to foreign countries. The students stay with host families who have children of a similar age. For most of the Cardinal Pacelli students it was their first time traveling out of the United States. “I thought it would be interesting to go to a totally different place,” sixth grader Lucas Daniher said. Fabiola Galarraga, Cardinal Pacelli’s Spanish teacher and a native

of Venezuela, accompanied the students and described the journey as an eye-opening and enriching experience. “Going to live with the host families took our students totally out of their routine,” she said. “All of it made an impression on them – from the Ecuadorian way of eating smaller meals throughout the day to their visits to some of the region’s cultural hot spots.” One highlight was a visit to Parque Historico, a zoo and historic center

in Guayaquil. With three different zones to explore – wildlife, traditions and architecture – students learned about Ecuador’s ecosystems, as well as the agricultural traditions of the past. “There were so many different types of plants and animals. We saw a tapir for the first time,” Leah Deremo said. Students also experienced Ecuador’s education system by attending classes at Jefferson See PACELLI, Page 8

SAINT GERTRUDE STUDENTS PREPARED Administrators, faculty and parents at this Dominican Sisters-led school collaborate daily to celebrate their faith and school heritage while preparing students for today’s challenges. The school has a fourth-generation family enrolled and initiated two programs to help students become more civically and socially aware of their community. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Whitton both completed grade school at SGS in 1956, and have two grandchildren in the school. When they settled in Madeira, they were intrigued by the Dominican Friars and Sisters and have never left. When asked why they stayed, they said: “It was the excellence of the Dominican Order, the strong academic programs, and the wonderful high school and college careers that ensued for our children and grandchildren.” The “Sacred Heart Leadership” program began last year and is led by the school counselor, Mrs. Beth Blumberg. The program consists of eighth-grade student leaders who are assigned to meet with a group of younger students. The meetings are designed to teach the kids how to handle sensitive social situations. The “Holy Days and Holidays” program was initiated by administrators and designed to help students become more aware of not just their faith and the liturgical calendar, but other major civic holidays.

SEVEN HILLS: EDUCATING THE WHOLE CHILD Young men and women graduate from The Seven Hills School as confident, well-rounded individuals, prepared to be engaged citizens in the global community. Their development into complete human beings – intellectually, physically, emotionally and socially – takes place in every aspect of their Seven Hills educations – in and out of the classroom – and this dedication to the whole child is intrinsic to the school culture. Known for its rigorous college-preparatory curriculum, Gerber Analytics, LLC named Seven Hills one of Ohio’s top five Academic Champions four consecutive years; and 100 percent of graduating seniors ma-

triculate to college every year. At Seven Hills, educating the whole child means offering limitless opportunities outside the classroom for participation, initiative and community engagement. Lower School students begin community and global support activities in preKindergarten. Middle and Upper School students can hone their leadership skills in a wide array of extracurricular clubs and community service opportunities. Seven Hills’ Physical Education and Health program, led by experts in their fields, fosters the development of teamwork, healthy living habits, and decision-making and time-management

skills. The athletics program at Seven Hills is outstanding in both its achievements and its culture. Led by professional coaches, both Middle and Upper School teams earn honors and win championships in the league, city and district. The school’s athletic philosophy supports full participation, and all teams have a no-cut policy. More than 80 percent of students in grades 1-12 participate in a school sport, and by the time they are in Upper School, they can join one of 15 teams in 13 different sports. “As educators, it is our role to help students discover their passions in life, and those passions

may lie in a wide range of fields,” said Nick Francis, Head of Upper School. “It’s wonderful to see a gifted lacrosse player share his talent as an actor. Our students are encouraged to develop all of their talents, and to explore their potential in multiple areas.” Seven Hills is known for the excellence and breadth of its Fine and Performing Arts program. A defining feature of the Lower School experience is the abundance of opportunities to express oneself through music, art and drama in regular classes and performances. In the Middle School, courses in visual art, theater and music give students regular opportunities to learn

new skills and explore and expand their artistic vision. The Upper School Fine and Performing Arts program offers all students a rich array of courses in the visual arts from Painting and Pottery to Time-Based Media and Art History. Talented singers perform in the Concert Chorus or Chamber Ensemble, and instrumental musicians can join the Symphonic Ensemble and the Contemporary Ensemble. Theater students can choose to take varied courses in Acting, Directing, or Technical Theater. Seven Hills students thrive in a community in which all individuals are celebrated for their unique contributions.

CHCA: GREAT ACADEMICS, FAITH-CENTERED MISSION All parents desire the very best education for their children and choosing the right school can be a difficult decision. This is especially true in Cincinnati where there are many wonderful options. Some area schools are committed to strong academics; others are committed to Christian education; still others are known for athletic prowess or an arts focus. Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, a non-denominational preschoolthrough-grade 12 collegeprep school, excels at all of these things. CHCA’s dedication to instilling a passion for learning, developing leadership and serving the community is unparalleled. Like many private schools, CHCA has much to offer in the way of smaller class sizes and more individualized attention. Add to that: a science lab and enrichment programs at Edyth B. Lindner Elementar; a beautiful performing arts theater and state-of-the-

art science laboratories at the high school; extensive technology integration to enhance student learning; outstanding athletic facilities; four Department of Education Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Awards; and mission trip and service opportunities that begin as early as the seventh grade. CHCA makes for an extremely desirable choice. Then consider that all CHCA courses are taught at the college-preparatory level. Eighteen Advanced Placement courses are offered with 33 percent of the class of 2012 earning AP Scholar distinction, and an overall pass rate of 90 percent compared to

state average of 67 percent. Additionally, 100 percent of CHCA graduates go on to top colleges, with the majority accepted into the college of their first choice. Students are far from being classroombound though, engaging in experiential learning opportunities and completing thousands of hours of community service locally, in the U.S. and around the world. Academically gifted students with proven achievement are invited to pursue the Cum Laude Merit Scholarship Program, a renewable high school scholarship. Distinguished Scholar awards recognize elite

students scoring exceptionally high among their peers with awards equal to 90 percent of high school tuition. Commended Scholar awards reward highly gifted students scoring in the top percentiles among peers and are equal to 75 percent of high school tuition. In addition, CHCA’s global perspective expands as students from 17 different countries are on campus this fall. New this year, we will be hosting students from Norway and Columbia. Each student brings a unique viewpoint to the classroom as we learn from each other’s experiences and see the world through each other’s eyes. These are impressive academic statistics, but for many parents and staff, the well-roundedness of the school experience and focus on the faith-centered mission are just as critical. “Integrating an atmosphere of academic excellence, unapologetic faith, pro-

motion of athletics and appreciation of the arts, while actively leveraging and engaging the expertise of staff and parents to further the school’s mission are normal parts of life at CHCA,” says Rob Hall, CHCA research analyst and CHCA parent. “Instead of settling for one or the other in such scenarios, CHCA is successful in finding ways to do both. That is what makes CHCA such a unique and engaging place to work and learn. That’s why I not only work here but send my own children to school here as well.” Plan a campus visit, schedule a shadow or join us for Open House: » Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., AllCampus » Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, 6-8 p.m., Armleder Campus » Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., North Campus Call 513-247-0900 or explore us online at www.chca-oh.org.

WHY IS A CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL A GOOD CHOICE? The teenage years can be the most challenging in children’s lives. Young people need the knowledge and skills to excel in an increasingly competitive, global world. More importantly, they need a vibrant, caring environment where they can reach their full potential and become the best that they can be. Catholic High Schools provide the academic rigor that students need to compete with the very best in the world. Research shows that because of a greater emphasis on homework and study, Catholic School students develop more effective writing skills. Catholic High School

students consistently outperform others in a variety of standardized tests and alumni matriculate to the finest colleges and universities in the United States. Last year, Catholic high school graduates in the Archdio-

cese of Cincinnati generated over a quarter of a billion dollars in college scholarship offers. But the most important thing about a Catholic high school is its mission to educate young people in the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. You’ll find a special bond among students, families, the school and the Church, where all share a strong sense of community. There is a mutual respect among students, faculty, and administrators which mirrors the values that children are taught at home. There is an insistence that students measure their lives by what they give rather than what they get.

ST. MARGARET OF YORK IS FAITH-BASED Pope Benedict XVI has called for a “Year of Faith” beginning this October. At St. Margaret of York (SMOY) Catholic Parish School this is nothing new. The Catholic faith is a very important part of the faithbased curriculum, where Christian values are encouraged daily. Dedicated to faith formation, students prepare for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion and Confir-

mation, as well as practice their faith through outreach projects that make a positive impact on the community and the world. They also attend weekly Masses. A faith-centered education that is rooted in the gospel message of Jesus (as teacher) gives way to academic excellence. “Our students work hard to develop their understanding of See SMOY, Page 26

ST. XAVIER: MIND, SPIRIT, FRIENDSHIP St. Xavier High School’s educational heritage stretches back more than 180 years – inspired by more than 450 years of Jesuit tradition – and is home to a warm, welcoming atmosphere of learning, friendship and spiritual affirmation. Boys from more than 100 grade schools across Greater Cincinnati come to St. X’s 110-acre campus and leave as men to populate the world with a genuine sense of purpose and belonging. St. Xavier is a collegepreparatory school. Each year more than 99 percent of its graduates matriculate to four-year colleges and universities. Eighty-five percent of the class of 2012 left with a college scholarship. The

school offers 24 Advanced Placement courses in seven subject areas. Grounded in its Roman Catholic faith and Jesuit mission, St. Xavier calls its students to serve others. Community service is not mandatory, yet more than 80 percent of the student body participates in some type of service program through the school. Students also participate in one of nine summer mission trips and five retreat programs over the course of their four years at St. X. St. Xavier boasts an impressive array of cocurricular activities, including 17 interscholastic varsity athletic teams, a variety of intramural sports and more than 110

clubs. The school’s athletic complex has been likened to a small college. Facilities include a 6,000seat stadium with artificial turf; an eight-lane, all-weather track; an eight-lane swimming pool; five tennis courts; two baseball diamonds; and two gymnasiums – and the locker rooms, trainer’s suite and strength and conditioning areas to support them all. St. Xavier’s athletic facilities are classrooms providing instruction in lifelong health maintenance, teamwork, the need to strive for fairness and building unshakable self confidence. The arts are a vital part of the St. Xavier education, too, and the school features a fine arts

Included are a 500-seat main stage theater, a 200-seat black box theater, band and choral rooms, instrumental rehearsal spaces and six studio classrooms for drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics and photography. The fine arts wing has its own computer lab used for graphic design. MND READIES YOUNG WOMEN FOR SUCCESS IN COLLEGE, BEYOND Mount Notre Dame offers a unique and complete experience for life beyond high school. It is an experience that is rooted in Catholic tradition and superior academic quality. It is also an experience full of special activities and opportunities for its students that foster leadership, teamwork and a sense of responsibility to share their gifts with others. The result – bright, confident young women who go on to excel in college, career and life. The foundation of the Mount Notre Dame experience is the outstanding academic program featuring the most Advanced Placement courses (18 – including an AP opportunity for freshmen) of all of the girls’ schools in the metro area and 22 honors courses. MND’s Scholars Program exposes qualifying students to not only the most challenging course of study and early exposure to college placement tests, but also to a vast array of career exploration opportunities. The Tablet PC Program makes the most of educational technology and opens doors teachers and students never even dreamed of knocking on just a few years ago. MND’s engineering courses prepare the scientifically talented young women of today for a career in this competitive field. MND also boasts strong programs in the humanities that offer leadership opportunities and a greater awareness of the inter-connected-

ness of our global society. MND is deeply committed to the role of women in philanthropy and was the first high school in the area to establish student-run Youth Philanthropy Council (YPC), which operates as a mini-foundation. The YPC has made an impact from a local level to an international level and is replicated by 20 other area schools. Mount Notre Dame’s College Counseling and Guidance Department views the road to college as a four-year partnership between the student, her parents, the academic team and her college counselor. MND’s customized approach to college counseling ensures that each young woman arrives at the destination that is best

for her. MND’s family spirit sets it apart. Walking through the halls, it is evident that MND’s students support, encourage and challenge each other. This produces young women who think critically to solve problems, work cooperatively in group settings, delight in each other’s successes and push one another to maximize and share their God-given gifts.

MND’s athletic program not only consistently brings home state championships but also produces players sought after by the most competitive colleges. Georgetown, Northwestern and Vanderbilt are just a few of the universities that have MND Cougars wearing their colors. In just the last two years, 35 seniors have signed to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate

level. The Mount Notre Dame experience is one that nurtures the mind, body and soul. That commitment to the “whole person” is extremely evident in the MND’s Student Activities Program, meeting interests and developing leadership through nearly 50 clubs and organizations. From academic to adventure, the environment to equestrian, minority interests to Model UN, whatever a student’s interests may be “MND has a club for that.” MND’s clubs receive local, regional and national attention. MND’s Cougar Dance Team consistently places in the top ten at the national level, and MND’s theater company consistently produces top-shelf shows like last summer’s “Hairspray.” Mount Notre Dame prepares its students for success. It provides the young women of MND with the values and tools to succeed in high school, college and in their careers. Beyond that, the encouragement and support from faculty and friends instills a solid sense of self in the young women of MND, allowing them to succeed in life.

A BADIN PARENT SPEAKS When I sent my children to Badin High School, I did it because I knew they would get a great education. I was right – and then some. They were so impressed with how friendly the overall atmosphere at Badin was – from their fellow students to the faculty to the entire administration. Everyone is part of “The Herd” – they bleed green! Students have a won-

derful experience at Badin High School. There is so much to do – athletics, clubs, service opportunities. And it all enhances the outstanding academic program. I really like the fact that Badin High School is a coed Catholic school. The positive environment truly makes a difference, and since the Real World is full of men and women, it’s only right that they’re in the high school hallways, too.

Now a strong education is getting even stronger at Badin – with iPads for all students and an ongoing commitment to being ahead of the tech curve in the 21st century. My children will come and go from high school, but Badin will continue to be a terrific place to send children. As they like to say: “It’s not just high school … it’s Badin!” S. St. Ursula is a nurturing Catholic educational community where students thrive inside and outside of the classroom. Experienced and caring teachers, coaches and staff guide the students to build confidence, knowledge and friendships as part of their SUA experience. Ask an SUA student or parent or come see for yourself what makes St. Ursula so extraordinary. There are many opportunities to experience firsthand the SUA campus and state-of-the-art facilities, the talented teachers, the tradition and history and the unforgettable feeling you get when you walk in the door.

Located in one of the safest neighborhoods in Cincinnati, St. Ursula offers many benefits. Situated in the heart of the city’s cultural center, students benefit from the surrounding gems like the Krohn Conservatory, Eden Park, Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati Art Museum and Mount Adams – all within walking distance. It doesn’t take long for new and lasting friendships to form, whether incoming students know other girls on their first day or not. Our students become part of our family and feel nurtured by their caring teachers. Upon graduation, students tell us they feel prepared for college. St. Ursula students are educated to be open-minded critical thinkers and lifelong learners who study all aspects of an issue and form opinions based upon inquiry and analysis. These skills give them self-confidence, high self-esteem and integrity. SUA graduates are aware of their own unique gifts

and the responsibility they have to use these gifts to benefit themselves and others. Whatever a student’s hopes and dreams, St. Ursula Academy can help her achieve them. The guidance team works personally with each student beginning in her freshman year to help with the adjustment to high school. They also make sure the classes fit the student through oneon-one hand scheduling. Student guidance continues every year to make sure each student is on track to meet her personal and education goals. In a student’s senior year, the guidance team offers many resources to assist with the college application and selection process, and the results are impressive.

GUARDIAN ANGELS: NEW LEADER AND 1:1 TABLET When Guardian Angels School students returned to school this fall, a new leader welcomed them. Mr. Corey J. Stoops is the new principal of Guardian Angels School, bringing a strong commitment to spiritual development, instruction and student achievement. “I was drawn to GA because of its spiritual and academic reputation,” Mr. Stoops said. “In addition, one of the greatest strengths of Guardian Angels is the passion and commitment the community has for the school.” Guardian Angels School has been an integral part of the Mount Washington/Anderson community since 1895. Guardian Angels School

fosters an educational environment where students are able to maximize their spiritual, academic, social and physical potential. Teachers employ methods and techniques that meet the learning style of each student; there is no “one size fits all” way of teaching. We provide an environment which prepares each student for a culturally diverse world by proclaiming values rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In October 2007, Guardian Angels School was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. Guardian Angels School, in cooperation with Guardian Angels

Parish, parents and the community at-large, endeavors to prepare students to be followers of Christ and productive citizens. We believe … » ... every child is a gift from God and called to be a faithful servant of God. » ... every child is capable of learning. » ... in guiding and assisting each student to reach his or her potential academically, socially and spiritually. » ... in designing academic and religious instruction to stimulate a desire for lifelong learning, while fostering selfdiscipline, responsibility and integrity. » ... in having respect

permeate the school environment. Guardian Angels School integrates technology into daily classroom instruction according to the needs of the students and educators. Each student in grades 6, 7, and 8 has a tablet PC as part of the 1:1 computer program. They take and organize class notes, complete research and turn in homework – all through their tablets. Not only does the 1:1 program develop technology skills, but it also uniquely prepares our students for high school. In addition to the tablet technology, all Guardian Angels classrooms – plus, the science lab and Spanish classroom – use

interactive whiteboard technology, and every grade level has one set of hand-held Student Response units for instant assessment. The state-ofthe-art science lab is equipped with technology and equipment for all grade levels, and communication to classrooms comes via the Angels on the Air broadcast studio. Guardian Angels School has a student-toteacher ratio of 21-to-1. Since 2003, Guardian Angels School has provided an after-school care program in response to parents’ needs. Parents are encouraged to be a part of their children’s GA education and volunSee GUARDIAN, Page 27

If you are looking for the best educational start for your child, we invite you to come experience the Montessori difference at Good Shepherd. It’s a wonderful environment meticulously designed by the brilliant Maria Montessori for the child to reach his or her full potential. As young as age 3, the child is directed in “prepared environment” to explore on their own and learn order, concentration, selfcontrol – all nurturing their innate desire to “do by myself.” The “work” they do is purposeful, leads to a great sense of accomplishment and fosters a lifetime love of learning. At Good Shepherd Catholic Montessori, the child is also introduced – in a beautiful way – to an early relationship with God through the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. It is a hands-on Montessori-based curriculum that gives the child a chance to learn about the prophecies, parables and gospel through handcrafted, child-sized materials and song. It’s a Christ-centered, Catholic education that is like no other in Cincinnati (25 percent of our students are non-Catholic, so all faiths are welcome). The school offers a rich academic and faith education from third through eighth grade, with each level carefully designed to meet the developmental needs of the child and adolescent. Set on a beautiful wooded 13-acre campus with two creeks, GSCM offers a See MONTESSORI, Page 27
