‘Nati Ninja’ designs race for Kids Ninja Charity Challenge Chuck Gibson Special to Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Ninja warriors will descend upon Symmes Township Park in Loveland on Saturday, Oct. 13, for the second annual Kids Ninja Charity Challenge to support NEST Community Learning Center. Local educator Evangeline “Van” DeVol founded NEST to provide sound Nutrition and targeted Education in a Safe neighborhood environment that will
Transform the outcome of at-risk schoolage children. Over the past three years, the program has served school kids throughout Loveland who are at risk and living in suburban poverty conditions. Tony and Emily Moran were introduced to NEST during a talk by DeVol at St. Columban parish in Loveland. They volunteered to join a committee to help develop an annual fundraiser. The family enjoys watching the popular television show "American Ninja
Warrior" and Tony suggested a ninja race would be popular. They organized the first Kids Ninja Charity Challenge one year ago. It exceeded any expectations. “I think we hoped for 100 kids and we ended up with over 500 kids – 570 kids,” said Emily Moran. “It was great, it was a huge success. It was great for NEST.”
Place your bets everyone ... on another fun night in the heart of Loveland. Just in time for Halloween, Loveland’s Little Vegas is set for Saturday, Oct. 27, all around the new and renewed shops and restaurants of beautiful historic Loveland. Teams of four players each will be given a set amount of “play money” to gamble on traditional Vegas games like blackjack, roulette, three card poker and others. Event organizer Doug Portmann promises more than one twist for the players – all of whom must be over 21. “There will be fun things outside your traditional games of chance,” said Portmann. “There’ll be things like rockpaper-scissors, things like war, pick-anumber and more hilarious games.” Players will bet their fake money at the revitalized shops and eateries like Alley Boutique, Cincy Shirts, Magnolia’s, Plaid Records, Jack Rabbit, Lyle’s, Bishop’s Quarter, Tano’s, Ramsey’s, The Works, Loveland Sweets, and Paxton’s all around Loveland. There have been a lot of changes in Loveland since the same group organized “Lovelandopoly” in 2016. Besides the renewal, a lot of new businesses have opened. “It’s a nice chance for people who were here last time to reintroduce themselves to all the businesses that have opened up down there,” Portmann said. Soft Surroundings comes to Rookwood Commons Jennie Key Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
A store familiar to online and catalog shoppers opened this week in Rookwood Commons. Soft Surroundings, a luxury lifestyle retailer featuring products that are soft to the touch, opened its fourth store in Ohio and its first in Cincinnati. Its address is 2671 Edmondson Road, Space 110. Jim Manno, a store spokesman, said one big advantage the stores have over the catalog is that the apparel tempts you to run your hands over it. "It's really touchable and soft," he said. So soft, items in the catalogs include cloud ratings. Most of the apparel and home goods are designed exclusively by or for the brand. The beauty department will feature complimentary cosmetic and skincare consultations as well as regular beauty events. Some shoppers may pick up on a Coldwater Creek vibe in the store. It's not your imagination. Robin Sheldon, founder, and vice chairman of Soft Surroundings, is a former vice president of merchandising for Coldwater Creek. Coldwater Creek closed its Cincinnati stores in 2014.

The Vegas gaming goes 6:30-8 p.m. Whether you played it safe or took the risks, what you won or lost will be tallied up and valuable gift cards await the top three teams with the most money at the end. Get rich or go broke, there’s still plenty more fun with the costume contest sponsored by the Little Miami River Chamber Alliance. “I like creativity,” said Cee Cee Collins, chamber CEO and president. “I think we’ll see the showgirl outfits, Sinatra, Elvis, Vegas marriage couples, the Wedding Chapel.” Everyone will have to go through the “Chamber Chapel” over by the fountain to show off their creative costume. Once the top gamblers have been awarded, the top three costumes will be judged by the chamber and win valuable gift cards. The key is fun and laughter to go along with the Loveland’s Little Vegas theme for the night.
‘If somebody really wants to go for it, we’re gonna look for Vegas-oriented costumes,” Collins said. “It’s about Vegas and it’s about Loveland’s Little Vegas.” Then everyone can mix and mingle while they enjoy food and beer tasting with open container in effect and the return of the band Counting Skeletons. “We’re very excited. There seems to be a nice buzz among the participating businesses; they’re excited to show off what they have,” said Portmann. “Come down and see the great places Loveland has. Come see what a great town it is.”

They achieved the goal of providing funds to sustain NEST programs. “We want this to be our signature fundraiser,” said DeVol. “We would love for it to be as successful as last year.” The money helps provide Chromebooks, internet, Wi-Fi hotspots and calculators to give kids the tools they need to complete schoolwork. Other items include sports equipment because physical activity correlates to a healthy body and mind along with the nutritious supplies like fresh fruit, soup and water. It may be the only nutritious meal they have that day. “It’s anything you need for a highquality afterschool program,” said DeVol, “except we’re on wheels.” Those wheels need gasoline, insurance and electric. DeVol hopes the event also helps to spread the message why the NEST Community Learning Center is needed in a suburban community like Loveland. She wants people to know poverty is prevalent and growing, not just in Loveland, but in suburban communities all across America. Thus, the Kids Ninja is back for a second year. “Mostly it’s an obstacle course race, everything is in the spirit of the show,” said Emily Moran. “It’s lots of balance and climbing challenges. You’re trying to make it through the obstacle, not fall off the obstacle, so it’s a challenge.”

Moran is very grateful to have key support for the event from Jarvis Global and especially excited to have a very special race course designer. “Our race designer is a real 'American Ninja Warrior' contestant,” Moran said. “It’s James Wilson, he’s known on the show as the Nati Ninja. He really intends for it to feel much more like the show, except a kid’s version. Wilson has a ninja gym in Blue Ash (Nati Ninja) and we hope to continue the relationship with him.” While kids can sign up individually, See NINJA, Page 4A

Tree branches, trimmings, flower cuttings and similar lawn waste should not be incorporated with leaves. WHY DO MEDICARE RECIPIENTS WILLINGLY
PAY MORE THAN $0 COPAYS?
LET’S THINK ABOUT THIS. Maybe it’s because people think if they’re paying more they must be getting more. Or that what they’re getting must be better since it costs more. Maybe they think if they make a change, what they end up with might not be as good. Or they simply may not be aware of their options. The fact is that with a MeridianCare Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO), you can get $0 copays for PCP visits, lab work, X-rays, urgent care visits and other medical services you use most. Plus, you get no-cost coverage for dental care, eyewear and hearing aids. MeridianCare plans even include Viagra/Levitra coverage, a free gym membership and no-cost transportation to and from your doctor appointments. And not only are there $0 copays, there are $0 premiums and $0 deductibles too.

A crisp fall day calls for hot bowl of gumbo Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld
Remember the simple baked chicken recipe I shared last week? Well, I had purchased more chicken than I needed, so I decided to make a quick gumbo soup with the rest of the chicken. This is the gumbo soup I made for years in gargantuan quantities for our Holy Trinity church bazaars. It’s a nice soup for these cooler autumn days. I received an interesting note and recipe from Delhi reader Carol Graham who enjoys making her family’s favorite cucumber salad with a vinegar and sugar dressing. “I think I may have created it. I’ve never seen a recipe for this cucumber dish. It’s a family and potluck favorite,” she said. The difference between Carol’s salad and maybe yours could be that Carol doesn't presoak the cucumbers in salt water, and she finishes it off with sour cream. I’m going to make Carol’s version soon. How about you? Let our Community Press family know how it turns out if you do make it. Rita Nader Heikenfeld is an herbalist, educator and author. Find her blog online atAbouteating.com. Email her at rita@com munitypress.com with “Rita’s kitchen” in the subject line.

Carol Graham’s cucumber salad
Holy Trinity chicken gumbo soup
Carol didn’t specify the kind of vinegar. I would use cider, but clear would work, too.
1 cup rice
2 cucumbers, peeled and sliced
Go to taste on ingredients. If you buy broth, make sure it’s real broth, not simply flavored. Or if you want to see me make chicken broth from scratch, check out my Fox 19 segment where I show Frank Marzullo just how to do it.
⁄2 medium onion, sliced and diced
Ingredients
Sliced fresh parsley for garnish (opt)
⁄2 cup vinegar
1 generous pound boneless, skinless chicken, cut into 1⁄2” or so pieces
Instructions
Ingredients
1 1
1 cup water
1 bell pepper, diced
1 tablespoon sugar
1 generous cup yellow onion, diced
Salt and pepper to taste
2 ribs celery, diced
1 cup sour cream
3 nice cloves garlic, minced
Instructions
Palmful fresh basil, chopped, or 1 teaspoon dry basil
Mix cucumbers and onions together. Whisk vinegar, water and sugar together. If too tart, add more water. Pour over cucumber and onions. Refrigerate 4-5 hours or overnight. Before serving, drain cucumbers well. Then stir in sour cream. Blend well and serve.
1 large or 2 small bay leaves 4-5 cups chicken broth
1 can, 14.5 oz., diced tomatoes 1 box, 10 oz., frozen cut okra or as much fresh okra as you like,
Sauté chicken, pepper, onion, celery, garlic, basil and bay leaf in a bit of olive oil until chicken is just starting to cook and looks opaque. Add 4 cups broth, rice and tomatoes. Cook at a gentle boil until chicken is done, about 20 minutes. While soup is cooking, sauté okra in a bit of butter just until crisp/tender. Taste for salt and pepper. Remove bay leaf. Add okra and serve. Or serve okra on the side separately. Tip: Freezing bell peppers No need to blanch, just dice, freeze hard in single layer on cookie sheet, then pour into containers.

Viewpoints Childhood mental health: A crisis in the making Stephanie Book Borden Guest Columnist Community Press
HELLO I remember holding my babies in the hours after they were born, imagining who they would become and what our family might be like. My husband had “the talk” with each of the girls within an hour of arriving earth-side about how boys would walk up to the door, knock and speak to him before picking them up. Never, in a million years, did I imagine myself in the throes of a panic for weeks as one of our beloveds struggled with a mounting mental health crisis. I had no idea that trying to secure urgently needed pediatric mental health care would test the limits of my advocacy skills and my network of resources. Through it all, I had people tell me I was over-reacting. Maybe I was reading her wrong. Perhaps it was just the ADHD and hormones so I just needed to adjust to a new dynamic. All these ways of denying the reality that my child was experiencing a mental health crisis and subtly (or not so subtly) implying that I was too sensitive for this next stage of parenting were as frustrating as, and more cutting than, the lack of available resources.
Data show that 1 in 5 children in the United States experiences a severe mental health issue, but nearly 80 percent do not receive mental health care. Just 15 percent of psychiatrists provide specialized care to children and adolescents while it was projected that the need for pediatric psychiatrists would double between 2000 and 2020. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Ohio is one of many states with a severe shortage of providers. This shortage means it takes an average of more than seven weeks to get an appointment with a psychiatrist. In the midst of a downward spiraling situation, this is an eternity. I am grateful we were eventually able to access to the tremendous resources at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and The Lindner Center. However, the number of children and families who need these providers and programs far outnumber the resources available, so the wait is doubly torturous as you watch your loved one spiral deeper out of control but not quite so dangerous that it merits a visit to the emergency room. In general, I am very careful about how I share our family’s story because it’s not just my story to tell. It involves our entire family, and they get to control how they share their part of it. Other families are protecting the privacy of their loved ones as well and avoid-

ing the stigma or judgment that can come from unsuspecting corners. Yet, from time to time, there are code words that parents use, and if you are paying attention and respond with a corresponding code word that indicates shared experience, a whole new conversation opens up. Finally, someone who has a clue about the terror and frustration you’ve experienced. Someone who might have a resource to share or a positive story. In many ways, the pediatric mental health crisis is a Gordian Knot of insurance reimbursement – medical school specialty training issues. I don’t see how we can individually create immediate systemic change in the current climate. What we CAN do at an individual level is be kinder to each other. Chances are good that you know a family who has felt the agony of not getting the help their child needs in a timely manner. We can support our friends, neighbors and colleagues who are concerned about their child’s mental health, We can make ourselves safe places for parents to process their experience of parenting during this type of crisis. Ohio team of week: Moeller football wins with new mindset Scott Springer Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Cincinnati Enquirer readers voted Moeller High School football as the Ohio Team of the Week, based on votes tallied Sept. 28. Our football teams of the week receive a feature that runs the following week. KENWOOD - Attention to detail has served Doug Rosfeld well. The 1997 Moeller High School grad was a captain for the Crusaders and went on to become a captain at the University of Cincinnati. He eventually came back to Moeller as an offensive line coach under John Rodenberg, coaching with his former head coach Steve Klonne. Rosfeld was part of a Greater Catholic League championship team as a player and part of Moeller's most recent state championships (2012, 2013) as a coach. In 2014, he was hired as director of player development at UC under thencoach Tommy Tuberville and he stayed on for the first season of Luke Fickell. When the former Ohio State player and coach starting building his Bearcats, Rosfeld took note. It started with good old-fashioned mental toughness training. Through that came physical toughness and through that came confidence. It can be seen with the success of the Bearcats this season and with Moeller's success under the Friday night lights. Moeller is at 5-1 with four regular season games to play. They're third in the region in computer rankings and just barely out of the state top 10 poll. The five wins equal what Moeller did in 2015 and are more than what the last two Crusader teams were able to muster. So, what gives? "The new culture that (coach) Rosfeld's brought in has been huge," Moeller starting quarterback Mitch McKenzie said. "The senior leadership is great. I think we've all taken great jumps in the offseason to become great leaders in the weight room, classroom and the field." McKenzie was a back-up a year ago when then-starter Miles McBride went down against St. Xavier. McBride rallied back from a leg injury to return for Moeller's state basketball championship run, but has put football aside with a West Virginia basketball offer in his pocket. "Miles came to me at the end of last season and said, 'This is your team now,'" McKenzie said. "Everybody just bought in. Really nobody stayed down and got negative about the next season. We haven't had this feeling of winning games like this for a few years." A Moeller football meeting on Monday, Oct. 1, involved freshmen, JV and varsity. It incorporated prayer, a weekend review, clapping in unison, a fun video, a word of warning about distractions and non-football messages. Much like a college team might do,

the players wrote thank you notes to donors to the school's tuition assistance program. It's a simple act, but a meaningful one to alumni who may be out-ofstate. Rosfeld himself remembers getting similar notes from Moeller players during his UC career, which kept him in touch. It's family football, something a lot of places try to pull off with varying degrees of success. At Moeller, where the similarities in Fickell and Rosfeld are glaring, it appears to be working. Both Fickell and Rosfeld are Catholic and both have six children. To boot, Fickell's oldest son, Landon Fickell, is a sophomore waiting in the wings at Moeller, so he's probably heard every mantra from Kenwood to Clifton. There's no denying the connection: Both schools run hard, tough out wins and are proving naysayers wrong. "That's a very big compliment. I love the University of Cincinnati and I love it even more with the culture that's down there in place," Rosfeld said. Culture is another trendy football word, but Rosfeld has brought the college focus to the high school game, something that's not lost on future Michigan Wolverine lineman Zach Carpenter. "Our whole offseason, we worked harder than anyone in the state," Carpenter said. "We spent a lot of time conditioning. As the season progresses, we're maintaining our strength, everyone else is decreasing their strength. I think that's what gets us through a lot of our games. I believe it's going to help (at Michigan) a lot." Carpenter likes the offensive lineman
mentality Rosfeld has brought to Moeller. The former center is not afraid to put the game on the shoulders of his big guys. If it works fine; if not, the Crusaders learn from it. Against La Salle, a late 4th and goal failed in regulation, but in overtime, the Moeller line bulldozed a winning hole from hard-running Chrystopher Watkins. Such gutty runs come from early morning cold workouts in winter and the confidence to execute them. "We try to get our guys comfortable with being uncomfortable," Rosfeld said. "We try to get our guys really comfortable at the end. Our game plan is to get it down to the last possession or two. Our guys aren't scared to risk losing in order to win. We think it's to our advantage when adversity comes our way." Defensive back B.J. Hendrix has been an example of that, sealing a win at St. Xavier with a pick six, then preserving the victory the following week by intercepting La Salle's M.J. Horton in the end zone in overtime. "We've won some close ones, lost some close ones and our guys are responding well to the mindset of, 'so what? now what?'" Rosfeld said. "We're really preparing them for living life to the fullest and not being so worried about failing or falling short." It's not flashy, but it's effective as a win over Elder would give Moeller their first GCL-South title since 2014 after going 1-8 in the league the previous three seasons. "I don't have a whole lot of flashiness about me," Rosfeld said chuckling.
