Large signage spelling out “OAKLEY” soon will identify the eastern approach to the neighborhood’s Madison Road business district, which also will be made more pedestrian friendly. Cincinnati City Council has agreed to appropriate $1.9 million to upgrade two pedestrian bridges that span Madison between Vandercar Way and Brazee Street. The bridge nearer Vandercar Way will bear the “OAKLEY” signage. “Both pedestrian bridge decks are going to be replaced, along with new railing, lighting under the bridges, lighting over the bridges and a gateway sign on the eastern most pedestrian bridge seen as you are heading into the business district,” said Oakley Community Council board member Kenny McNutt, cofounder of MadTree Brewing at 3301 Madison Road. “This will improve the walkability of Oakley, which will help all businesses in Oakley.” Money for the project will come from a variety of sources, including city of Cincinnati economic development and street improvement funds, plus proceeds from the sale of property. Cincinnati City Council approved the funding as an emergency ordinance so construction could begin as soon as possible. Cincinnati has scheduled it to be completed by the end of 2019. The pedestrian bridges spanning Madison Road in Oakley were built in 1959. Upgrading the eastern gateway to the neighborhood business district has been an element of city of Cincinnati and Oakley Community Council plans since 1982. It’s the third and final phase of a larger revitalization plan for Oakley’s business district. Work in the first two phases, which ended in 2011,included: ❚ Traffic and pedestrian improvements in and

around Oakley Square. An intersection was reconfigured and an esplanade with space for live music and other events was expanded. ❚ Streetscape and safety improvements in the Madison Road business district corridor, with new sidewalks installed along its length. “When Vince Schirmer and I first started raising

money for this project back in 2004, we received a $30,000 grant to study how we could upgrade the infrastructure of Oakley’s business district,” Oakley Community Council board member Dave Schaff said. “I would have never dreamed we would have ended up with nearly $12 million in capital improvements for our neighborhood.”

Police seeking culprit of up to $10K in damage at Blue Ash Sports Center

Vandalism at Blue Ash Sports Center. PROVIDED BY THE CITY OF BLUE ASH

Someone caused between $8,000 and $10,000 worth of damage to the Blue Ash Sports Center on Grooms Road. Police are looking for the culprit. Damage included overturned trash cans in the concession area and bathrooms by Field B. In the men's and women's bathrooms, mirrors were broken, and stall doors were damaged. The Blue Ash Sports Center, which opened in 1997, is a 37-acre facility with baseball and soccer fields used by high school teams and youth sports associations. Officer Jason Asbury found the damage during a routine check of the sports center at around 4:15 a.m. Nov. 16, according to police reports. A homeless man who sometimes sleeps in the bathroom to shelter from the cold was in the men’s bathroom getting ready to go to his job when Asbury arrived. He told the officer the bathrooms were destroyed when he arrived at 11 p.m. the night before. He told police he didn’t touch anything except to clear one area of glass shards so he could lay down to sleep.

Police are questioning the man, but do not consider him a suspect. There was also damage in the main building. Windows and a door were broken, and computer equipment including a Dell computer and a modem were damaged. Nothing appeared to be missing. Police found footprints on the soccer field between building and the bathroom that was damaged. There was a large expletive written into the snow near the main building. Security from a nearby Kroger caught two vehicles pulling into the front lot near Grooms Road entering and exiting from the north but it's not clear enough to identify vehicles. A sports center employee told police no employees were fired or had any problems recently. While the center gets graffiti or tampering from time to time, this is the first time that something to this magnitude occurred at the sports complex. If you have any information about this incident, call the Blue Ash Police Department at 513-745-8555.

BLUE ASH The city wants to change ward boundaries to balance population Blue Ash is considering redistricting to balance the population in its City Council wards. The city is proposing a redistricting plan to balance the number of people in each of its five wards. It’s been 16 years since the last time the city redrew its wards. The proposed plan would balance the wards so each has about 1,210 households and would keep neighborhoods together. The plan also keeps wards contiguous and uses streets, property lines, railroad, or other apparent boundaries. Officials said the plan tries to minimize the number of boundary changes. The city is considering three redistricting options. City Council is tentatively scheduled to vote on the redistricting during a meeting set for 7 p.m. Monday,

New Youth Restoring Kenwood may host Pill Helps You Grow financial building Biologically Younger PAID ADVERTISEMENT

Jeanne Houck Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

Based on groundbreaking research from UC Davis, anti-aging pioneer creates the world’s first lifeextension pill that boosts the energy center of cells By Ray Wilson Associated Health Press AHP − Researchers at the University of California, Davis, have discovered a new compound that has the amazing ability to reverse the aging process in cells, extending lifespan and restoring health. The compound was immediately formulated into an all-natural pill which adults and seniors, from all over the country, are now taking every day. Sold under the brand name Ultra Accel II, the new once-daily pill can significantly improve many of the ailments associated with aging including memory and recall, heart and lung function, poor immunity, and low energy levels. According to the pill’s developers, it may also increase the average lifespan to 146 years old, shattering the current U.S. average of 78.

Dr. Al Sears with fellow physician Dr. Oz at the WPBF 25 Health & Wellness Festival held in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Research shows the pill works by triggering the growth of new mitochondria in the body’s most important organs, a phenomenon known as mitochondrial biogenesis.

With daily use I noticed my endurance, memory, vision and even the appearance of my skin and hair improved. It was truly amazing.”

Scientists long believed this was impossible to experience after a certain age. But the new research proves that it can now be achieved at any age with Ultra Accel II.

Two key ingredients make up the Ultra Accel II softgel. The first is a patented form of PQQ called BioPQQ. The second is Ubiquinol, the most effective form of CoQ10.

Energizes the Body’s Most Vital Organs Mitochondria are found in all cells (and there are trillions of them in your body), They produce the cellular energy required by your organs to function. In the most energy-demanding organs, like the brain and heart, there can be as many as 2,000 mitochondria per cell. And according to a landslide of clinical data, the health of these mitochondria determines our level of health and how long we live. When organs lack the cellular energy they require to work at a 100% efficiency, your health deteriorates and you age faster. This is why mitochondria dysfunction are the root of many problems associated with growing older. Low energy, fatigue, muscle weakness, memory loss, poor immunity, skin aging, and blood sugar problems, are often the result of an energy crisis in your cells. But now, for the first time ever, there’s a fix for the estimated 50 million adults and seniors who suffer — often unknowingly — from these ailments. “With daily use, Ultra Accel II helps users feel more energetic and vital. Many also notice significant improvements in brain, heart, and lung function too,” explains Dr. Al Sears, creator of the Ultra Accel II pill. “And that’s because Ultra Accel II multiplies the number of youthful mitochondria in every cell of your body in every important organ and tissue. The result is an enormous spike in cellular energy that literally reverses your biological clock. In laymen terms, you grow younger.”

The University Study That Started the Anti-Aging Movement Dr. Sears’ inspiration for Ultra Accel II came after reviewing the new study published by researchers at UC Davis. These researchers discovered that when mice were fed the natural compound called PQQ the number of mitochondria in their cells multiplied. In eight weeks they saw a staggering 55% increase in young, youthful mitochondria. Even more remarkable was the fact that the mice with the strongest mitochondria showed no signs of aging even when they were the equivalent to 80 years old. “After reading the study on PQQ, I immediately called my manufacturer. He explained to me PQQ was incredibly hard to source but after a few months I finally got my hands on some and successfully blended it into a softgel” explains Dr. Sears. “I was the first to try it. After the first dose I felt an immediate boost in energy.

Science of Age Reversal

Research shows that as we get older the number of mitochondria in our cells declines sharply. In fact, by age 67 nearly 80% of the mitochondria we had at 25 have died. This dramatic decline can trigger many serious health problems including heart failure, memory loss and relentless fatigue. It can also cause the skin to look older and accelerate the overall aging process.

Here's a rendering of a building a developer would like to construct in Kenwood with Bank of America and Merrill Lynch as tenants. PROVIDED

The BioPQQ in Ultra Accel II is one of the only known compounds to actually multiply the number of mitochondria in your cells! And just like a power cord, the Unbiquinol has the amazing ability to energize these new, youthful mitochondria so that they are fully charged.

Patients Hail Improvements in Health and a Deceleration in Aging The initial feedback from patients using Ultra Accel II has been strong. Many say they have never felt better. “I’m a 70-year-old man and I’ve been taking Accel for 2 1/2 months. On a recent treadmill stress test, I was told that I did as well as several patients tested who were in their 20s,” raves one user. Adds another: “I noticed a difference within a few days. My endurance almost doubled. But it’s not just in your body. You can feel it mentally too,”

A developer wants to construct a financial building in Kenwood with the Bank of America and Merrill Lynch as tenants. The Sycamore Township Zoning Commission will on Monday, Dec. 10, consider the project BSM Stagge LLC of Nashville wants to build at 7796 Montgomery Road. Plans are to demolish a 54-year-old building now housing restaurant and retail tenants on the 0.65-acre site and construct a two-story, 7,690-squarefoot building in its place. “The character of the development will be similar to those of surrounding properties, each of which are existing commercial uses,” Dick LaRosa Jr. of the Infinity Engineering Group in Tampa said in paperwork submitted to Sycamore Township on behalf of BSM Stagge. “The density of the project site following the proposed redevelopment will

be similar to the existing density. “We do not anticipate that the development will have an adverse impact on the character of the immediate area, public services or facilities,” LaRosa said. Hamilton County auditor records show the property has been owned by Stagge and/or Borchard family members or trusts since 1988. BSM Stagge wants to begin construction in June 2019 and estimates the work would be completed in March 2020. “It is exciting to have two great American institutions with an interest in moving to our Kenwood business district,” said Tom Weidman, vice president of the Sycamore Township Board of Trustee. “It is developments like this that allow Sycamore Township to continue to thrive financially.” The Dec. 10 zoning commission meeting at which the proposed financial building will be reviewed begins at 7 p.m. at the township government complex at 8540 Kenwood Road.

Two choral groups sing for the holidays at Madeira church St. Paul Community United Methodist Church of Madeira will host two respected local choral groups in a pair of December holiday concerts. The Young Professionals Choral Collective will take the St. Paul stage at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, while the Sycamore Community Singers will perform at 7:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14. Both groups will sing in the church’s festively decorated sanctuary at 8221 Miami Road. The Young Professionals group is an innovative musical ensemble that combines Cincinnati’s love of singing, socializing and culture for young men and women between 21 and 45. Every December the YPCC’s Community Carolers, organized and directed by Kelly Ann Nelson, spread holiday cheer throughout the region with their music.

The group’s appearance at the church will be part of the annual St. Paul Presents concert series. As with all concerts in that series, no admission will be charged but attendees will be invited to help support the long-running musical series. The Sycamore Community Singers’ Dec. 14 concert will be directed by Linda Gartner, a retired Sycamore Community School District music teacher who founded the adult volunteer choir in 2016. She says the choral group “sings sacred and secular vocal music with emphasis on excellence, camaraderie and fun.” Sixty of the choral group’s 115 vocalists, who range in age from 20 to 84, will sing in the holiday program at St. Paul. Many of the singers recently completed a concert tour of Austria and Germany. Don Bedwell

Wine-soaked raisins a simple, sophisticated treat Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld

Sometimes the simplest recipes are the best. The Chardonnay-soaked golden raisins I’m sharing fit that description. Not only is it easy, it’s quite sophisticated and morphs from appetizer to gift from the kitchen. I had a Kentucky reader concerned about chocolate with a whitish coating that developed on top. “What is it and should I toss it?” he asked. Read on to find out.

Readers want to know What is that white or gray stuff on chocolate? Is it safe to eat? First, the chocolate is perfectly safe to eat, it’s just not the prettiest kid on the block. White flecks, spots, streak, gray splotches are signs of either what’s called a “fat” or “sugar” bloom. Both are natural occurrences. Here’s why: Fat bloom: Occurs usually from temperature changes. Looks like a waxy whitish coating that forms due to cocoa butter or milk fats moving through and winding up crystalizing on the surface. You’ll see gray splotches on the chocolate. (It occurs more in less expensive chocolates that haven’t been tempered as well as the more expensive ones. Tempering is a process that stabilizes the sugars and fats). Sugar bloom:Occurs usually from moisture in the package drawing out the sugars, making them crystalize on the surface. This bloom is usually dry and might make your chocolate feel a bit sandy or gritty. Preventing fat/sugar bloom: Store chocolate in a cool environment. Some experts say the best temperature is 64 degrees. I have stored mine in the door of the refrigerator and in the pantry with equal success. Fixing fat/sugar bloom: No worries. If you don’t want to eat it, just melt it down. (I had to do this with some chocolate clusters I made).

Viewpoints Due process is basically fair treatment under the law Brien Miller Guest Columnist Community Press USA TODAY NETWORK

Every profession has words that matter. In the legal community, we call these “terms of art.” Most professions have rules or norms. In America, many of these universal truths are demanded throughout our entire society because they are necessary for freedom; based on our common heritage; and were forged through the blood, sweat, and tears of those who came before us. One of those such universal truths is the idea that everyone deserves due process. This concept has been bandied about a great deal lately (think Kava-

naugh hearings), but most of us would have a difficult time explaining it. Due process can most easily be defined as fair treatment. Its origins can be traced to the Magna Carta and the year 1215, when King John of England promised that “No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any other way…except by the lawful judgment of his equals or by the law of the land.” It is a concept that has been embraced by free societies since then. And it is so foundational to the idea of America that it is enshrined in the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments to our Constitution. But what does it look like? Legally, the due process clauses of

the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments act as safeguards in the administration of justice. They protect us from the unfair denial of life, liberty, or property by the government. In fact, there are two different types of due process. Substantive due process protects against laws that are unfair because they offend things like fundamental rights that are “implicit in the concept of ordered liberty;” are “deeply rooted in American history and traditions;” or are especially important to “discreet and insular minorities.” This means that substantive due process protects individuals and groups from the majority enacting laws that threaten their most basic rights. Simply stated, laws must be fair. And when they threaten basic

rights, they can’t be fair, no matter how many people favor them. Procedural due process protects people from the government by ensuring that procedures are fair. That means that we can expect notice when we are required to appear in court, an impartial trier of fact (and law), and the right to be heard when our interests (life, liberty, or property) are threatened. The reason that we should all embrace and protect due process is that we should all consider one other universal truth - people only submit to processes they trust. And for our processes to be trusted, they must be fair to us all. Brien Miller is an attorney who lives in Blue Ash and practices with the Meadows Law Firm in West Chester.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Blue Ash City Council model’s effective community collaboration Blue Ash City council was set to vote on Nov. 8 to tear down the Hazelwood Community Center. Many concerned residents passionately spoke to council members during the public speaking portion of the meeting. After hearing our pleas and how the community had been excluded from the decision-making process, council agreed by a 5-2 ma-

jority to table the vote and meet with the Hazelwood Community Association on Nov. 13.. Mayor Tom Ademac, Vice Mayor Marc Sirkin, council member Jeff Capell, and many members of the Blue Ash Parks and Recreation Office met to listen to each other with the focus on community collaboration. City officials agreed to work with the

Hazelwood community in a collaboration to create a plan of facility utilization rather than facility demolition that best fits not only the Hazelwood community, but also the City of Blue Ash. The Hazelwood Community Association has never been so proud to see collective action by the neighborhood be met with understanding from City Council. The City of

Blue Ash should be proud to have elected officials who take the time to listen to communities. We should all be proud of how working together in this divisive time, can lead to more collaboration with local governments and local communities. Jesse Maxwell Blue Ash

Sports Backstory: New Reds skipper’s Moeller legacy Scott Springer Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

It was a first for Mike Cameron. Though long employed by the Cincinnati Reds as an official scorekeeper, he had never witnessed an actual, “live” press conference involving the team. For Cameron, this was more than just a routine press conference. Now, if the new manager of the Cincinnati Reds, David Bell, has a question about a scoring decision, he’ll be calling his old high school coach. Prior to his professional baseball experience as a player and a coach, David Bell was a three-year starter for Mike Cameron at Moeller High School. Bell also played basketball and was inducted into the Moeller Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.

David Bell, Moeller class of 1990, is the new manager of the Cincinnati Reds. PROVIDED

“That was exciting,” Cameron said after the press gathering. “I’ve got to pinch myself. I look back and say, ‘Golly, has God ever blessed me to have a career like this?’ I’ve got to be honest, when I started I was just hoping I’d get a kid to be an all-conference player and maybe win a league title. I’ve been blessed.” Cameron, who still coaches junior varsity at the school, coached varsity at Moeller for 39 seasons winning four state titles (including 1989 with Bell), five regional championships, 10 district titles and 17 sectional titles. From that crew came several big leaguers, including Bell and a couple of familiar Reds/ Cooperstown inductees in Barry Larkin and Ken Griffey Jr. Cameron and Moeller freshman coach Ron Roth, who also scores Reds games, have seen more baseball royalty

than most. “David was a pretty good player,” Cameron said. “The big thing that separated him was his baseball IQ. I never had a kid that had the baseball mental part down like he did. High school kids can’t always handle it, which you expect.” Like his father Buddy was in the big leagues, David was the third baseman at Moeller. He had 96 career hits, including 18 doubles in his junior season. Considering the high school season is about two months, depending on the postseason, the numbers are impressive. Bell played 1988-1990 along with another Crusader who went pro, Adam Hyzdu, brother of current Moeller president Marshall Hyzdu. See BELL , Page 2B

The Cincinnati Enquirer would like to introduce the 2018-2019 All-Enquirer preseason basketball teams, a new tradition to kick off the hoops seasons in Ohio and Northern Kentucky. Cameron also coached Bell’s brothers, Ricky and Mike who also had pro careers. Buddy Bell would come on occasion to watch his kids and his former coach. That’s right, in the first of his 39 seasons as Moeller’s head coach, Cameron also had David Bell’s father on the roster. He had to overcome coaching the son of a major leaguer (former Red Gus Bell) early. “That was my first year,” Cameron said. “He played second base. They (Bells) would come and go down right-field or left-field out of the way. They didn’t interfere with you at all. Gus would a lot of times be up in his car. If Buddy would do something, make a play, get a hit, you’d hear this little beep on the horn.” Gus Bell assured Cameron that he’d

had his day in the sun and never interfered. Same with every Bell he dealt with from there. “They’re very genuine and humble,” Cameron said of the Bell family. “It’s a great family.” As David Bell moves back into the area, he and his wife are the parents of an 11-year-old daughter and a younger son. Should fans want to follow the baseball bloodlines, David Bell’s son is named Gus. Cameron may not get to coach him, but it’s a safe bet the young lad will be introduced to a baseball if he’s not sleeping with one already. As for those he coaches now, some aren’t aware that a pair of Hall of Famers and now a major league manager once looked at a line-up card authored by Cameron to see where they were hitting. “That’s OK,” Cameron said chuckling. “I kind of like it that way anyway. Hopefully, they listen to me because I’m their coach. I enjoy it. That’s why I keep doing it.”

Down Home Christmas Craft Show set for Dec. 1 George Rooks Guest columnist

Howdy folks. It won’t be long before old St. Nick will be here. The Thanksgiving season is over, and I hope you had a good family gathering and plenty to eat. The Bethel Lions Club provided a Thanksgiving meal to a family of seven in Bethel. I went to Kroger and met a lady from the family to pick out what they wanted for the meal. The Monroe Grange at Nickelsville furnished a Thanksgiving meal in Monroe Township for a family of five. The mother met with me to pick out what they wanted. The cost for the two meals was paid for by the Lions Club and the Grange. I thank the Bethel and Monroe schools for helping to find a family for us to support. The Shepherd House is having a Down Home Christmas Craft Show from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1. I hope to be able to set up my crafts. Don’t forget that they have moved to the area where the Harlow Tractor Sales used to be in Bethel across from the Methodist Church. The Catholic Church in Bethel that has the food pantry the second Friday of each month has

changed the date to Nov. 30. The church had their craft show on the earlier date, so the food pantry had to be changed. Talked to Mike at the Boars Head Bait Shop and he has made his bait shop look like a log cabin. I haven’t seen it yet, but I will this week. This will be the first Thanksgiving for him without his grandma. It will be lonely. I talked to the Grant’s Business in Milford and they have lots of Christmas trees including some to plant. They also have cut trees, decorations, candies, and plenty of gifts. The train display opens Friday so go see it. They spent a lot of time and expense getting it ready. I hope to get down to their place next week. I miss not being able to play Santa for them but “Old Man Time” has caught up with me. When I had Ruth Ann, it was a different world for

from the comfort of our community!

me. Now it is sure lonely in the evenings. It is the time to keep the birdfeeders filled. The thistle feeder’s here are getting lots of attention from the birds including the goldfinches, house sparrows, tufted titmouse, all kinds of woodpeckers, little downy woodpeckers and the cardinals. Mr. Chester (cat) is doing fine. He is in my chair as I write this. He is such a blessing. I got a different kind of canned food for him, he likes the shredded kind, so he looked at it and walked away. I said to him you had better eat, so he went back and sat down and ate. Start your week by going to the house of worship of your choice and praising the good Lord. God bless all . . .
