The Ferris houses:

Treasures in Mariemont and Fairfax Laura A. Hobson

Special to Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

Local history of early settlers goes back further than one might think. The early history of Mariemont and nearby Fairfax originated in 1788 and would not be complete without mentioning the Ferris and Stites families. Major Benjamin Stites and his brothers first purchased land here and called the settlement Columbia. Stites convinced Judge John Cleves Symmes, a Revolutionary War veteran, to buy 311,682 acres that became the Northwest Territory, Miami Purchase, which included the present-day Mariemont and Fairfax. In 1799, three brothers – Joseph (1776-1831), Eliphalet (1774-1859) and Andrew Ferris (1779-1849) – moved here from Greenwich, Connecticut. They bought 480 acres of land in the Miami Purchase tract from Symmes. All the brothers became farmers and millers who prospered. Their pioneer cemetery is located next to Mariemont Community Church where several Ferris gravestones are located. Other evidence of these early residents exists in several brick houses. The Joseph Ferris house is located at 5729 Dragon Way in Fairfax, one mile from Mariemont. Joe Stoner, president, Mariemont Preservation Foundation, wrote a paper about the history of the Joseph Ferris house in October 2011 and published it in the Mariemont Town Crier. Construction of the Joseph Ferris house started in 1807 with bricks carried by a barge via the Little Miami. The Ferris house has served as a residence, a restaurant, office space, a flower shop and a scuba shop. It initially sat on 700 acres with a view of the Little Miami River valley. The first phase of the house was completed in 1820, according to Stoner. Retired architectural historian Walter Langsam said the large, three-story red brick mansion with four Ionic columns was built in a combination of Federal and Greek Revival styles. “It had remarkable Federal style stencils throughout the upper walls above the chair rails. The Federal side has Flemish-bond brickwork,” Langsam said. “The Greek Revival section is simple, monumental and bold.” The Ferris house was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1975. In 1997, Douglas Eisele purchased the house, which became the Eisele Gallery of Fine Art and Old World Restorations Inc., now on just one acre. “The elegant house complements many 19th-century artworks for sale in my gallery,” he said. The Eliphalet Ferris house is located on 3915 Plainville Road, close to the office of Mariemont Preservation Foundation. Begun in 1802, it is on the National Register of Places (1975). One of the oldest houses in Columbia Township, it is a Georgian Colonial farmhouse later enlarged to three stories with interior end chimneys. The house was used as a residence until 1923 when it became the construction headquarters for the newly planned

Hubbard Radio Cincinnati, a subsidiary of the Hubbard Broadcasting Inc. radio and TV conglomerate, is planning to build a new headquarters building in Oakley. Hubbard has offered to buy three vacant parcels owned by the City of Cincinnati near the corner of Madison Road and Kennedy Avenue, where it would build a new 30,000-square-foot office building and broadcast facility, according to city planning documents. Hubbard Radio Cincinnati provides programming for country station WUBE-FM (105.1), and 80s-and-90s throwback station WREW-FM (94.9), among others. Its parent company is based in St. Paul, Minn. The City Planning Commission will vote on the proposed sale of the city owned property - valued at about $522,000 in 2017- at its next meeting Dec. 7. The new office building and radio station would replace Hubbard's Walnut Hills headquarters at 2060 Reading Road. Hubbard has promised to retain 142 jobs when it moves to the new facility, and hire an additional 37 workers. Hubbard would bring about $14.2 million in annual payroll to Oakley as a result of its relocation, according to its proposal.

Two Loveland schools building a bridge of unity Chuck Gibson Special to Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

As flowers began to bloom and students set their sights on summer vacation last May, an unlikely relationship between two Loveland schools blossomed. “I’ve realized we need more bridgebuilding, coming together to use our resources to build something better,” said Heidi Terselic at the time. Her son is a special needs student at Loveland Intermediate School and her youngest daughter an eighth-grade student at St. Columban Catholic School in Loveland. Terselic shared her idea with St. Columban teacher Elizabeth Richardson and Loveland Intermediate Principal Garth Carlier. Several student volunteers from St. Columban Catholic School partnered with five special needs kids in the Loveland Intermediate classroom of Joyce Muthig that day in May. “Everybody, disability or not, has a place, and in this case, Loveland Intermediate School has inclusionary practices to include everyone,” Carlier said following the service day last May. St. Columban students returned to Loveland Intermediate School only five months later for another day of service with some of the special needs students in Muthig’s classroom. Olivia Fischer was one of the seven students who visited on Oct. 3. She was paired with a girl named Ava – the same name as her sister – who shadowed her to science, choir and lunch, and assisted with her assignment counting money. “I loved it there,” said Fischer. “I got a view into this world I’d really never seen before. It was life-changing.” Building a bridge to show the kids what they can do is exactly what Richardson and Muthig hope for. St. Columban school children do not have much opportunity to interact with students with disabilities. Allowing the students

to interact together in their own environment is a way to let them see what they can do. “So they can see the wide range of abilities my kids do have,” said Muthig. “For our kids it’s fun to have new friends and a little variety to interact with others.” On Nov. 15 six of the special needs students from Loveland Intermediate reciprocated with a return trip to St. Columban School. They brought baked goods and worked right alongside St. Columban students using their moneycounting and communication skills to help St. Columban School raise funds for the “Magnified Giving” cause. They wanted to do something meaningful and help them in a “real-life” situation. “Joyce and I decided it might be a good plan for the LIS kids to come here and bring baked goods and help with the sale,” said Richardson. “I love being part of this opportunity for my students to learn about other kids in a different way. It was a great experience for all of us. It

built a nice bridge between the schools.” The St. Columban students showed the Loveland Intermediate students all around the school. They showed them a math class, social studies class, Spanish language class, English class, reading class, art and music class. It meant a lot to Olivia Fischer and her fellow students to share their St. Columban experience. In each class the St. Columban students shared what they had done at LIS in October, while the LIS children explained how they brought baked goods to sell at the bake sale. “It’s like showing them a whole new world, our classrooms, all the teachers; things they haven’t experienced before,” Fischer said. “Here at St. Columban everybody is equal. It doesn’t matter if you need a lot, or a little help. In our eyes everybody is the same. We are all brothers and sisters.” More about St. Columban School at: www.saintcolumbanschool.org More about Loveland schools at: www.lovelandschools.org

Where can you donate a toy for a child? Maslow’s Army and 3CDC are working together this holiday season to collect new toys for local families in shelters and families in need. Beneficiaries of the toy collection include St. Aloysius, Bethany House, SJO Kids, Cincinnati's Children's Home and Brighton Center. Toys can be dropped off noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays between Dec. 1 and Dec. 22 on Fountain Square. Maslow’s Army will set up two tents by the ice-skating rink. The goal is to collect over 1,200 new toys. For each new toy donated to Maslow’s Army and Santa’s Elves, 3CDC will provide a free skate rental. “The holidays can be an amazing time of year, however, for some families it can be a very difficult time,” said Susan Landis of Maslow’s Army. “At Maslow's Army, we want to make the holidays fun for everyone.” The toys will be distributed by Jolly Old St. Nick through Ho. Ho. Hope Ministries and Maslow's Army on Christmas Eve.

MADEIRA Madeira searching for road funds after levy defeat Madeira officials are reviewing their capital improvement plans following the defeat of a proposed earnings-tax hike that was on the November ballot. Voters turned thumbs down on an initiative to increase the tax from 1 percent to 1.25 percent, which would have increased the revenue produced by $786,000 a year. Madeira’s Budget and Finance Committee is reviewing spending in the general fund to determine if there are any programs or services where money can be shifted into the road program, City Manager Tom Moeller said.

Edible gifts fit for a party Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld

Reality hit me yesterday when I moved the gourds and pumpkins into the garage to winter over for seeds and removed the stalks of broom corn decorating the fence row. Later, the kids came over and helped string outdoor Christmas lights on the trees. Yes, Christmas is coming up fast! I wanted to share a couple of really good, tried and true recipes for your holiday party or for giving as homemade gifts. Maybe you’d like to try the hot fudge peppermint sauce. It originated in Gourmet magazine and took off from there as it won fans. If you’re in the mood for savory with a bit of a kick, take some time to make the curried party mix. It’s from Janet Hontanosas, a Symmes township reader. Janet and I taught cooking classes for years, and the party mix was a student favorite. Rita Nader Heikenfeld is an herbalist, educator and author. Find her blog online at Abouteating.com. Email her at rita@com munitypress.com with “Rita’s kitchen” in the subject line.

Hot curried party mix Pack these into Chinese takeout containers for gift giving. Ingredients 6 cups Chex cereals (rice, whole grain and corn) 2 cups sesame sticks 2 cups small pretzels 1 cup pecans 1 cup roasted peanuts 6 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 generous tablespoon soy sauce 11⁄2 tablespoons curry powder

2 teaspoons sugar Up to 3⁄4 teaspoon cayenne, to taste ⁄4 teaspoon salt

1

Instructions Preheat oven to 250. Toss together the first 5 ingredients. Melt the butter with soy sauce over low heat. Whisk in remaining ingredients. Drizzle butter mixture over cereal mixture, tossing well. Spread in shallow roasting pan. Bake 45-60 minutes and cool completely before storing at room temperature, covered, up to 1 month. Makes 12 cups.

Gourmet magazine published this hot fudge peppermint sauce years ago, and it has since become a favorite. RITA HEIKENFELD FOR THE COMMUNITY PRESS

Hot fudge peppermint sauce

1

Similar to what Williams Sonoma used to sell. This recipe calls for Dutch processed cocoa. Sometimes it’s called Dutched or European style cocoa. It differs from regular cocoa since Dutch is treated with an alkali to neutralize its acidity. What this does is smooths and mellows the cocoa flavor and darkens the color. If all you have is regular cocoa, go ahead and use that.

Crushed candy canes, for serving (optional)

Ingredients Makes about 2 cups

⁄4 teaspoon real peppermint extract, or to taste

Instructions In a 11⁄2 to 2-quart heavy saucepan, bring cream, syrup, sugar, cocoa, salt and half the chocolate to a boil. Reduce to a low simmer and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in remaining chocolate, butter and extract and stir until smooth. Cool the sauce to warm before serving it so that it can thicken up.

⁄3 cup whipping cream

Tip: Make ahead

⁄2 cup light corn syrup

Sauce keeps in fridge for two weeks. Reheat gently before serving, so that it is still thick but just loose enough to pour.

2 1

⁄3 cup packed dark brown sugar

1

⁄4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, Dutch-processed if possible

1

⁄4 teaspoon salt

1

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Want to make regular hot fudge sauce? Sub in 1 teaspoon vanilla for the peppermint extract

Viewpoints We must demand better of ourselves, leaders Nathan Bachrach Guest Columnist Community Press

My great grandfather, Benjamin Nathan Jacobs, was president of Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh from 1895 until his death in 1899. He came to this country in the 1870s from England, where the rest of his family had settled after escaping Poland and persecution from, among others, the Czars and the Cossacks. He arrived on our shores as an immigrant. I don’t know if he came legally. I wonder if most of us can say by what means or methods our ancestors gained entry to America. It took him at least 15 years after his arrival to become a U.S. citizen in 1893. I can only imagine what drove him to come to the United States. The First Amendment to the Constitution would seem to have been enough – freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly and the right to petition the government. Surely, he wanted a better life. A place where he could pray in peace and security. A country where he could achieve whatever he was capable of. A country where he could "belong and contribute." A country where opinions and opportunity could walk in lockstep. Where hard work would create a better life for himself and his children. Each generation would be better off than he was. This is why you come to America.

He did belong and contribute. He rose to become the chief bookkeeper for the Gusky Department Store. Before America had a social welfare system, he was a board member and accountant for the Gusky Orphanage for Jewish Children and the Jewish Home for the Aged. Taking care of society’s most vulnerable was a reflexive response. It was assumed. He would not live to see his son, Nathan B. Jacobs (my grandfather and namesake) graduate from the University of Pittsburgh in 1916. But he would not have been surprised to know that his son receiving a college degree was something only 2 percent of the country accomplished then. This is America. Belong and contribute. Anything is possible. I believe my great grandfather would be shocked by the disrespectful level of public discourse we see today. As Rabbi Shena Potter Jaffee suggested recently at the JCC’s Solidarity Vigil, we should add a new phrase to our conversations: Expect and Demand. We should expect human beings to be respectful of each other and communicate in a civil manner. We should expect people to listen to each other and respond with thoughtful responses. We should expect our politicians to "tone it down" so we can debate weighty issues in a thoughtful manner. Volume doesn’t make things correct. We should expect there is a place for all opinions, religions and viewpoints in this environment. My father, a World War II

THE XAVIER MBA IN WEST CHESTER

veteran, disagreed with my view of the Vietnam War. But he repeatedly told me this: "I may deeply disagree with you, but I will fight to the death for your right to your opinion." I wonder if that phrase is still operative today. Failing this, we should demand it. We should demand behavior, public discourse and security befitting a democracy. We should demand it of ourselves, our neighbors, and our leaders. This is America. Belong and contribute. Anything is possible. If enough people sit by, and don’t either belong and contribute, or, expect and demand better of each other, we may discover that the phrase anything is possible, takes on a new and tragic meaning. When my great grandfather died, his chair at Tree of Life Congregation was covered in black for 30 days of mourning. It would have been unimaginable to him that someday in his America, they might need to drape not one, but 11 chairs in black. This is not the progress all of our ancestors fought for. We are better than this. We must demand and expect more of ourselves, our leaders and our country. If we do not, Tree of Life will be just another sad incident blending into the next tragedy, which will surely come. It’s up to us to not let that happen. Nathan Jacobs Bachrach is chief executive officer of Simply Money Advisors, a financial advisory and investment management firm headquartered in Sycamore Township.

Loveland to have new football, volleyball coaches Scott Springer Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

LOVELAND - Just five years after leading Loveland High School to their first Division II Ohio state football title, Fred Cranford is stepping aside as head coach of the Tigers. Cranford came to Loveland from a successful run at Bishop Fenwick and also had state title experience at Columbus DeSales as an assistant. Following Loveland’s magical 15-0 run in 2013, Loveland had back-to-back records of 6-4. The 2016 Tigers finished 4-6, but the last two seasons Loveland has been 1-9. After six seasons and a cumulative 34-32 mark, Cranford put out the following statement at Loveland Wednesday, Nov. 28: I have been blessed to have spent the

last 22 years coaching football, a commitment that has allowed me to serve others both on and off the field. I have dedicated myself every day to be the best mentor leader to all my coaches and players, both current and past. I have left nothing behind, no regrets. The relationships I have forged will never be forgotten and will continue to grow. I am very thankful for having been around so many great coaches and players that have cared so much about each other. For this Tiger Nation, I want to say THANK YOU for all of your support, conversation, and love throughout my coaching episode at Loveland. Reached by phone later, Cranford cited family time as his reason to step aside. His wife, Betsy, travels on her job and their children are 10, 6 and 4 years old. “I’m super-excited about this next

chapter,” Cranford said. “I never wanted to compromise family over football. The kids are at a critical age and to be able to spend more time with them, I’ve got no regrets.” He expects he’ll coach again at some point, but not in the near future, unless it is with one of his kids. He cited a coaching clinic he attended years ago that included veterans like Princeton’s Pat Mancuso and Jim Place of Chaminade-Julienne (and more recently Withrow among others) as a key influence in his decision. “It was a Miami Valley Coaches Association meeting in my second year of coaching,” Cranford said. “The first question someone asked was, ‘What could you do different that would help us?’ Every one of those guys said, ‘I’d spend more time with my kids.’ I drove home and thought if I am ever lucky to

have a family, I will never compromise my family for football.” Though he’s coached many students, the 2013 Loveland team will always be special to him for their undefeated run and improbable romp in the snow in Canton over a favored Cleveland Glenville team 41-23. The Tigers had near escapes with Mount Healthy and Zanesville to get there. Loveland had three 1,000-yard rushers with junior Nate Slagel (who missed the last seven games injured), senior Gunner (Lay) Gambill and freshman Luke Waddell, who led the squad overall with 1,593 yards and 18 touchdowns. They had a massive line and hard-nosed defense. “I’ve had a lot of luck along the way, I’m not going to lie,” Cranford said See LOVELAND , Page 2B

Former Sycamore High School and University of Cincinnati Bearcats baseball standout Kevin Youkilis, a threetime All-Star for the Boston Red Sox who hit .287 with 133 home runs, 239 doubles

and 564 RBIs in nine seasons for the team between 2004 and 2012, is among 20 new candidates on the 2019 Hall of Fame ballot being mailed this week to more than 400 voting members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. In October, Youkilis threw out the cer-

emonial first pitch before Game 1 of the American League Championship Series at Fenway Park in Boston. Youkilis announced in April that he completed his University of Cincinnati degree and graduated. Youkilis had his No. 36 retired by the Bearcats in 2015. Youkilis was elected last December to

the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame and inducted in May. Youkilis announced his retirement from baseball in 2014 following a bigleague career that lasted 10 seasons. He worked as a special assistant for the Chicago Cubs and now owns Loma Brewing Company in Los Gatos, Calif.

chuckling. Cranford, 45, leaves with one more state title than the bulk of Ohio football coaches. This weekend, Colerain (DI) and Wyoming (DIV) have the chance to duplicate Loveland’s perfect run of 2013.

Plitt also to part Loveland girls volleyball coach Julie Plitt is retiring after four successful years and a pair of Eastern Cincinnati Conference championships. This past season, the Lady Tigers were a perfect 14-0 in the ECC and 22-2 overall with Julie winning ECC Coach of the Year and senior daughter, Marie, winning Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Loveland was 28-0 in league play the last two seasons and Plitt surpassed 400 wins back in September. Marie Plitt will be heading to Ball State to play for the Cardinals, joining her brother, Drew, who is a Ball State quarterback. Drew Plitt as a sophomore, led Fred Cranford’s Tigers to the DII state football title win. He is currently Ball State’s No. 1 quarterback going into spring practice. “I missed a couple of football games this year,” Plitt said. “Brian Conatser (AD) is great at moving things around, but once tournament hits, you can’t move those games around. Who knows if Marie’s going to play? I won’t know until later. And, my oldest (Bryce) is getting married in July. It would be busy and I don’t believe I have the time to give to the girls what they deserve.” Prior to Loveland, Julie Plitt has numerous successful runs in the Cincinnati Hills League at Reading (10 seasons) and Wyoming (six). Plitt still teaches at Wyoming where she won five straight CHL titles and started an undefeated string of league wins. To date, Wyoming hasn’t lost a league match since Oct. 15, 2009. and the ECC, she has had 12 undefeated conference seasons, 14 sectional titles, seven district titles and seven trips to the regionals. She’s been a league coach of the year 13 times, city coach of the year 11 times and was once Division II Ohio Coach of the Year. Her final record is 416-98. “I don’t think anyone is surprised,” Plitt said. “I think everyone was hopeful I could make it work for another year. I don’t think it’s fair for me to say I’m going to leave practice on Friday or we’re not practicing Saturday because I’m going to a football game. That’s really not fair to the program.” She plans on attending what Loveland volleyball events she can and hasn’t ruled out a return in a few years when her kids get older. “Having the opportunity to coach in your own community is really neat,” Plitt said. Cranford and Plitt’s decisions were publicized via Twitter by Loveland athletic director Brian Conatser.
