Zac Efron shows ‘Shockingly Evil’ transformation; Cincinnati-shot film headed to Sundance Sarah Brookbank Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Union Benedict from Kitchen 1883. PROVIDED
Cincinnati-filmed “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile” is headed to Sundance Film Festival. This film about serial killer Ted Bundy, played by Zac Efron, was shot in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area in 2018 Now it’s headed to Sundance, which will screen 112 films in Park City, Utah from Jan. 23 to Feb. 2, 2019. “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile,” will be shown in the Premiere category, which includes 18 world premieres. According to Variety, the film is told from the perspective of Bundy’s girlfriend Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lilly Collins). Bundy hid his gruesome killing spree from Kloepfer, who lived with him for many years. Other cast members include Haley Joel Osment, Kaya Scodelario, John Malkovich and Jim Parsons. The film crew made round in Greater Cincinnati, shooting in Mainstrasse, Clermont County Jail, Campbell County Courthouse in Newport. The actor even jumped out of the Northern Kentucky courthouse for what may be a scene depicting one of the most infamous moments in the serial killer’s history. This isn’t a Hollywood dramatization of the stunt, either: During his trial in 1977, Ted Bundy actually escaped from a window at the Pitkin County Courthouse in Aspen, Colorado. He then ran free for six days before being captured and eventually executed.

The development was named 2018 Retail Deal of the Year at the annual Night of the Stars awards program. The Shoppes at Anderson Towne Center is a twobuilding development that features shopping and dining space. Tenants include Chipotle, McAlister’s Deli and Ambiance Nail Salon and Spa. KZF Design was the architect. The buildings are situated in a plaza with two unique areas, an active space for gatherings and a quiet space that features a covered arbor.

Will Kitchen 1883 locate in Shoppes of Anderson? Sheila Vilvens Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
The future of Kitchen 1883 in Anderson Township is uncertain. Earlier this year, Kroger announced plans to open a second Kitchen 1883 restaurant this fall in the new Shoppes of Anderson Towne Center at the corner of Beechmont Avenue and Wolfangel Road. Several businesses and restaurants opened late summer and early fall in the new development. The space Kitchen 1883 would have occupied remains vacant. Kroger is mum on specifics but shared that plans are being evaluated. “We remain passionate about Kitchen 1883, and as we celebrate the one-year anniversary of our first location, we are evaluating site plans for the Anderson Township location to build on our key discoveries to provide customers the best dining and culinary experience,” Kroger said in a statement. Kroger opened its first Kitchen 1883 last November in Union, Kentucky. The full-service restaurant offers a fresh take on American comfort food. Anderson Township Assistant Administrator for Operations Steve Sievers confirmed plans are delayed. The township has no definite information on a

Ex-cop from Anderson robbed ‘to feed a drug habit’ Kevin Grasha Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
A former police officer committed five robberies in a one-month span to feed an addiction to prescription pills he’d developed after an on-duty injury, his attorney said. The robberies happened between March and April of 2017, nearly a year after Jacob Goodwin lost his job with the Elmwood Place Police Department. But it was Goodwin’s tenure with the police department in Aberdeen, Ohio in 2011 and 2012 that led to his addiction, attorney Brian Goldberg told The Enquirer. Goodwin, now 32, injured his back during a struggle with a man who tried to take his gun, Goldberg said. He said Goodwin was prescribed
pain medication and eventually became addicted. When his insurance stopped covering the pain pills, “he resorted to Jacob other means,” Goldberg Goodwin said. “This was to feed a drug habit,” he said, adding that Goodwin has accepted responsibility and is deeply sorry for what he did. Goodwin pleaded guilty Oct. 25 to charges including armed robbery. As part of an agreement with prosecutors, he faces a 14-year prison sentence. According to a search warrant, investigators believed Goodwin wore “a ballistic vest or body armor” during the robberies. He was living with his parents in An-

derson Township at the time. Police equipment and guns were found in the home. The first two robberies happened March 22, 2017. At approximately 8:10 a.m., Goodwin robbed a United Dairy Farmers in Mount Washington. An hour later, according to court documents, he walked into a Speedway 21⁄2 miles away, “implied to the cashier that he had a firearm,” and fled with about $200. He wore a black ski mask each time, the documents say. On March 30, 2017, Goodwin robbed a CVS Pharmacy in Oakley. A week later, he robbed an East End diner after “implying possession of a firearm to both employees,” court documents say. The last happened the afternoon of April 15, 2017, when he robbed a Speedway in Norwood. After that incident, it was a Newtown
police officer who was nearly sure he recognized Goodwin and a Hamilton County sheriff ’s deputy who recognized Goodwin’s black Dodge Ram pickup, a search warrant said. Since his arrest on April 20, 2017, Goodwin has been held at the Hamilton County Jail on a $400,000 bond. His sentencing in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court was scheduled to take place Dec. 11. Goodwin worked as a part-time officer in Newtown from February 2010 until he resigned in March 2011. Records show a supervisor recommended firing him for “a pattern of poor decision-making ability,” including walking into a home in the middle of the night because the garage door was left open. Goodwin then worked as a police officer in Aberdeen, Ohio until resigning in October 2012. His tenure in Elmwood Place ended in May 2016.

The body of the fisherman pulled from Harsha Lake on Tuesday, Nov. 27 has been identified as 52-year-old Daniel Snell, of Williamsburg. The Clermont County Coroner's Office released the name Wednesday, No. 28. The cause of death was not officially determined by the time this article was originally published, but is believed to be drowning, according to Deborah Hawkins of the coroner's office. Snell was on the lake in East Fork
State Park Sunday when he offered to transport a hunter who had killed a deer to the opposite shore, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Once the men and the deer were in the boat, the boat overturned in the water, according to the state agency. The hunter made it to shore, but Snell did not. First responders were first called to the lake around 7 p.m. Nov. 25. They searched for Snell until midnight when weather conditions on the lake became too dangerous. The search continued Monday and the early part of Tuesday until Snell's body was found.

A man who was reported missing Monday, Nov. 26 after he went hunting in East Fork State Park has been found. The man, whose name is not available, showed up cold but in good condition around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27 on Ohio 32 near Half Acre Road, according to Lt. Robert Hayslip of the Ohio State Highway Patrol Batavia post.
The patrol’s office assisted the Ohio Department of Natural Resources with the search until around 2 a.m., he said. The search was conducted by foot. The hunter was dropped off by his mother at the park for deer hunting around 5:30 a.m. that Monday, Hayslip said. He was to meet her at a pickup location later that day. When he failed to show, his mother reported him missing.

Make biscotti your way, learn tricks for good rib roast Cranberry almond biscotti
Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld
Well, you’ll never guess who just emailed me about Busken Bakery’s beloved Boston brown bread. (Some of you will remember that they used to serve it at their restaurant in Downtown Cincinnati). None other than Dan Busken, President and CEO. Dan thinks he may be able to find it, and if so, I’ll share it with you. When I was testing the cranberry almond biscotti recipe, my husband, Frank, kept taking slices off the baking sheet before I could bake them a second time (biscotti means twice baked). A darn good testimonial, wouldn’t you say? Check out the foolproof recipe for standing beef rib roast, too. Save the bones for bone broth. You’ll find a recipe on my site.
Perfect standing beef rib roast
Maybe you’d like to sub in cherries for cranberries, or pistachios for the almonds. How about chopped apricots? Or a few more nuts and no fruit, or vice versa? Ingredients 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder Couple pinches salt ⁄4 cup dried cranberries
3
1 cup chopped, slivered or sliced almonds, toasted in a 350 degree oven for 7 minutes, or just until fragrant 2 large eggs ⁄4 cup vegetable oil
1
This roast is expensive, and a loyal reader shared this recipe. “Similar to the way Cooks Illustrated recommends roasting beef,” she said. Start roasting it at a high temperature to sear outside and then roast it really slow so that it stays moist inside. First, season as you like. Place ribs side down in a sprayed pan and roast at 450 for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 250 and roast until thermometer reads about 125 for rare; up to 145 for medium or so. The roast continues to cook at least 5 degrees more when it’s out of the oven. Let it rest, tented with foil, for about 20 minutes before carving.

Whisk eggs, oil and extracts in another bowl until well beaten.
When cool enough to handle, slice on diagonal halfinch thick thick.
Add egg mixture to flour mixture and mix until combined, by hand or mixer. Dough will be clumpy. Dump out onto counter and shape into a ball. You may have to flour or wet your hands.
Place back on cookie sheet, cut side down and bake 8-10 minutes, depending upon how crunchy you want biscotti to be. Cookies get harder as they cool. Makes about 24.

Viewpoints LaRosa’s gives the gift of connection to those in need
All is calm, all is bright along with a few tips for the holidays Sandra Guile Guest Columnist Community Press USA TODAY NETWORK
The hectic pace of the holidays is here. With it comes to do lists, family visits, holiday shopping, and get-togethers with friends. It’s a time when our attention gets diverted away from checking important details like our how our personal information is being used, what wi-fi connection we’re using and not quite checking out charity requests. Here are a few tips to keep at least some control of the chaos: ❚ Always ask for a gift receipt. This way the recipient can return or exchange a gift if it’s not just right. ❚ Ask about a store’s return policy and warranty information before purchasing. Pass along info about returns, exchanges, repairs, and warranties to the person who will use the item. ❚ Research gifts and gadgets reading product reviews, check BBB.org’s Business Profiles, look at the sales flyers and ads, compare prices, look for early promotions and “flash sales.” For tips , check out BBB’s Digital IQ. ❚ Mobile Security is Important! With so many shoppers using their mobile
devices to research and make purchases, it’s important to have a secure device. Be sure you’re using the most up to date version of apps and operating system on your phone. ❚ Also, actively manage your location services, Bluetooth, microphone and camera – make sure apps use them appropriately as well. Check the app settings to make sure all apps have appropriate access to your information. ❚ Be on the lookout for name similarities. Dubious charities often pick a name that sounds like a more famous charity. Before you give, be sure you have the exact name of the charity you want to support. Learn more about charitable giving at give.org. Request a free holiday issue of the BBB Wise Giving Guide to be sent to a friend or family member this giving season! The guide features evaluation results for thousands of charities. Simply email Guide@give.org with “Free Guide” in the subject line, and a name and address of where you’d like the guide to be sent. Enjoy the holidays and remember, there’s always someone out there ready to pounce on your personal information. Protect it and learn more at bbb.org. Each year around this time, our holiday to-do lists are rapidly growing, calendars filling up and stress levels hitting an all-time high. With all these holiday distractions, it’s easy to lose sight of those around us that aren’t as fortunate, needing support to have their basic needs met. At LaRosa’s, each holiday season for more than 10 years, we have partnered with many of our generous Guests to present the “Feed Our Neighbors in Need” program, contributing 1/2 of the sales of all Buddy cards to the Freestore Foodbank. The Freestore Foodbank addresses the physical need of hunger in our community, a connection is built that then opens the door for crucial conversations around other issues impacting the wellbeing of local individuals and families. Because that’s what it’s about, a connection. We see that in our restaurants each day, our guests come for the food, but they stay for the connection. Without the continued support and partnership
from our guests, giving back to our community at this level would not be possible. By helping to meet the needs of those in our community through nourishment and human connection, we’re able to then offer something even greater, hope. Through Feed Our Neighbors in Need, last year LaRosa’s was able to contribute over $50,000 to the Freestore Foodbank, but the work doesn’t stop there. Here’s how you can help: ❚ Purchase a LaRosa’s Buddy Card for $10 at any LaRosa’s pizzeria now through Dec. 31; LaRosa’s will donate $5 from the sale of every Buddy Card to the Freestore Foodbank. GIRLS BASKETBALL STORYLINES TO WATCH
Walnut Hills brings back two leaders from last year’s 25-2 district title season Shelby Dermer
Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Here are a few stories to watch as the 2018-19 girls basketball season gets underway in Cincinnati.
Top-ranked recruits Kennedi Myles will head to Oxford when she graduates in the spring. The Walnut Hills standout committed to Miami University prior to her junior season and signed a few weeks ago. She averaged a double-double at 15 points and 10 boards per game last season.
Will Walnut be back?

Here are a few stories to watch as the 2018-19 boys basketball season gets underway in Cincinnati.
The top-ranked recruits in the area Miles McBride, the senior Moeller point guard, is the top local recruit, according to 247 Sports. Already committed to West Virginia, McBride returns to oversee a Crusaders team that won the 2018 state title. He’s ranked seventh in the state for the class of 2019, according to 247 Sports. Greg Tribble was ranked fifth before he enrolled at Huntington Prep. Abba Lawal, a 6-foot-11 senior center at Withrow, is ranked ninth in the See BOYS, Page 2B

Led by Myles, the reigning two-time Eastern Cincinnati Conference Player of the Year, Walnut Hills finished 25-2 and captured its first district title since 2010. The Eagles lost their best deep threat in Regan Anderson, but bring back Myles and junior guard Sean Kelly Darks, who averaged in double figures last season. Expect West Clermont and Loveland to be in the mix, too. The Tigers are led by junior Jillian Hayes, who was honorable mention all-state as a sophomore last season after averaging 15.6 points and 8.6 rebounds. The 6-foot-2 forward holds several Division I offers.
Kennedi Myles of Walnut Hills signed her letter of intent to play basketball for Miami University of Ohio Nov. 14. THANKS TO KENNEDI MYLES
Coaching notebook Milford Last season: 8-16 (2-12 ECC) Head coach David Fallis: "Due to the fact that I am the new coach, everything we teach is new to them. It’s a whole new system. They have adapted very quickly and we have seen measurable growth in the first three weeks of the preseason." Miami Valley Christian Academy Last season: 5-17 (4-12 MVC) Head coach Suzy Osterman: "The girls are going to be building skills and team work because the team lost a lot of seniors from the past year." Williamsburg Last season: 25-2 (12-0 SBAAC) Head coach Mike Madsen: "Our defensive-minded team play drives this team. We will play as one and for each other!" McNicholas Last season: 13-11 (5-5 GCL co-ed) Head coach Gregg Flammer: "We are quick and athletic and hope to play an aggressive, up-tempo style on both ends of the court."
Walnut Hills Last season: 25-2 (14-0 ECC) Head coach Adam Lazar: "I am most excited about our depth, experience and maturity. We return seven players who all played legitimate varsity minutes last year, and have added three freshmen who are going to be fantastic." Turpin Last season: 12-11 (6-8 ECC) Head coach Pete Hopewell: Said he likes his team’s chemistry and focus, which should bode well entering the new season. Goshen Last season: 14-12 (6-4 SBAAC) Head coach Mark Short: "I like our senior leadership and experience. We will need some youngsters to step in and fill some supporting roles." St. Ursula Last season: 4-19 (0-10 GGCL) Head coach Matt Kleespies: "We are young, athletic and hardworking. Still a lot to learn, but very coachable group of girls."

state and looks to lead the Tigers in the Eastern Cincinnati Conference.
Speaking of Moeller... Can the Crusaders repeat this season? In 2017-18, they went 27-3 and unbeaten in the Greater Catholic League South. While they lost the majority of their scorers, the Crusaders have McBride and Alec Pfriem, who led the conference in assists. In the past three seasons, the Crusaders have won the GCL-South annually and haven’t dropped a conference game since a five-point loss to Elder on Feb. 5, 2016. Moeller began its season Dec. 1 with a win over Bryan Station at Hillsboro High School. The Crusaders loaded this season’s slate with quality Ohio opponents such as Hughes, Wayne and Springfield (each coming off district titles) along with defending D-II state champion Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary.

The ECC’s battle of the bigs The ECC will likely come down to defense again as all of the top five teams from a year ago allowed less than 49 points per game against conference opponents. 6-foot-5 forward Nic Smith is one of the key returners for defending ECC-champion Walnut Hills. He averaged 11.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore last season and was honorable mention all-district. Abba Lawal and his 50 swatted shots from a year ago return for Withrow, which finished 16-9 last season and won a pair of playoff games before running into Moeller in the district semifinal. Also returning for the Tigers is Mike Hill Jr., who averaged 12 points per game last season. At 6-foot-9, forward Jackson Ames will play a big role for West Clermont this season. Ames played 11 games last year for the Wolves and opened his junior campaign with a 14-point outing in a win over Little Miami.

The birds are eating plenty of food to keep warm Ole Fisherman George Rooks Guest columnist
Howdy folks. We have a new store here in Bethel. It’s in the old tire shop across from Frisch’s. It’s called “Budget Store and Liquidations.” They sell different items. They also sell full pallets of items so stop and have a look. They have some good items. The parade in Lebanon of horse drawn carriage was last Saturday. I would have loved to have been able to see this parade. The six-horse hitch of the Clydesdales and Percheron horses would be great to see. I grew up working with horses. I plowed and rode a corn planter pulled by horses as well as a grain drill. I used one horse to pull a dump rake to window hay for a hay loader to put it on a wagon pulled by horses. We came back home Wednesday evening from serving food down in Lower Price Hill at the Kroger Building. When we came in the driveway, the light shined on my garage. There was a possum, a young one eating the birdseed that was on the ground. Then last night when I let Mr. Chester out, there
was a white skunk eating the grain on the ground. It was all white with maybe a little black on its head. I have also seen deer eating the seed. Talked to Mike and he said there were a lot of folks going fishing. Mike says lots of deer are being harvested, one feller got a very big doe. The birds are eating a lot of thistle seed. I can fill the feeders I made and in a couple days they need filled again. The birds are eating plenty of food to keep warm and that is OK with me. I need to go to Carney‘s Feed Mill and get birdseed and thistle seed. They mix their own birdseed and it is good. I am seeing cardinals, chickadees, goldfinch, house sparrow, redheaded woodpecker, downey woodpeckers, red bellied woodpeckers, and house wren. The eat the seeds off the ground that the other birds push out of
the feeders. Several years ago, I saw a flock of cedar waxwing bay and they are pretty. There were about 12 in the flock. They like cherries or mulberries. I wish they would come more. According to the book I have, they travel in flocks looking for berries. I just got back from the food pantry at the Catholic Church here In Bethel. The next one will be Dec. 14, 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. There was a good group getting food today. Mr. Chester is laying in my chair. When Ruth Ann was here he would lay in her chair with her and now he lays in mine. Start your week by going to the house of worship of your choice and praising the good Lord. God bless all . . . More later . . . George Rooks is a retired park ranger, Rooks served for 28 years with the last five as manager of East Fork State Park.
