NLBRA of Michigan: Where legends begin! The National Little Britches Rodeo Association began as a single
event in 1952 and has grown to a nationally recognized organization in the 58 years since. The first “Little Britches Rodeo” was held by a group of rodeo enthusiasts in Littleton, Colorado, who saw the need for an event geared specifically for youth interested in rodeo. It continued as a single rodeo until 1961, when a national convention was held in Denver. Representatives from several states gathered that year to create a national youth rodeo association, whose goal was to develop the talents of kids with a passion for the sport. In the years since, the NLBRA has grown by leaps and bounds. The spirit of the association has endured through good times and bad, and has stood fast to its mission statement: “...a non-profit venture to build sound, healthy minds and bodies-to develop character, selfreliance and good sportsmanship through competition in the great sport of rodeo.” Today’s NLBRA is the standard bearer to youth rodeo in the United States. Each year some 2,000 kids from 25 states compete in nearly 300 rodeos across the nation. The NLBRA boast many successful alumni, including seven-time PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys

NOW YOUR HORSE WON’T HAVE TO LOOK ANYWHERE ELSE FOR THE CALORIES HE CRAVES. A high-carb diet is often blamed for a horse’s health problems and hyperactivity. Problem is, most low-carb feeds reduce calories along with carbohydrates. The Triple Crown® family of low-carb feeds solves the problem by adding quality high fiber and high fat for any lifestyle and age. NLBRA of Michigan: Where legends begin! NLBRA From Page 4 Association) world all-around champion and current PBR (Professional Bull Riders) president Ty Murray, PBR cowboy Kody Lostroh, 2001 National Finals Rodeo Steer Wrestling world champion Rope Myers, six-time PRCA world champion calf roper and 1999 PRCA world allaround champion Fred Whitfield, and 10 time NFR barrel racing qualifier and Cowgirl Hall of Fame member Marlene McRae. NLBRA of Michigan strives to live up to that standard of excellence, hosting several rodeos across the state throughout the year and drawing competitors from Michigan and Indiana. “It’s our job as an association to promote rodeo to the next generation of competitors,” says Will Rosso, a rodeo senior pro judge and NLBRA parent. “These kids are the future of our sport.” Board President Dan Ritter concurs. “It’s all about the kids. That’s why we do it, that’s why we are here.” Michigan NLBRA rodeos are funded entirely by sponsorships and donations. “Without the
generosity of our sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do for these kids,” Ritter says. Youth aged 5-18 are encouraged to participate in various events, including roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, pole bending, trail course, goat tying, and bull riding. Michigan also has a Trail Hand division for kids under 5. Kids involved in Trail Hand events have the option to have help from an adult or another older NLBRA member to compete in events like mutton busting, barrel racing, dummy roping and trail course. NLBRA of Michigan just began the second half of its season with a rodeo at Sundance Riding Stables in Grand Ledge on April 24-25. The season will continue May 15-16 in St. Clair at Pine River Stables, June 5-6 at Hughston’s Cow Camp Arena in McBain, and will conclude with state finals on July 10-11 at Tom’s Western Store in Ovid. For more information, visit www.nlbraofmi.com or email the association at info@nlbraofmi.com.

WMApR Western Michigan Appaloosa Regional First off, I need to make a correction. Last month I listed the GLApHC show in Findley as being WMAR approved. It is not... it is only MApHA approved. Sorry for any confusion... here’s how the WMAR schedule should look. 2010 WMAR Show Schedule - MApHA Spring Show (May 8-9) Mason, MI - WMAR (May 28-29) Hastings, MI - WMAR (June 12-13) Hastings, MI - Show Me The Money (July 23-25) Lansing, MI - MapHA Summer Sizzler (August 7-8) Lansing, MI - MApHA Classic Show/Futurity (August 27-29) Lansing, MI Plans are coming together very well for the two WMAR shows to be held at the Barry County Expo Center in Hastings. We are looking forward to holding our shows at this fairly new facility. The arenas are absolutely huge with a very nice campground and lots of room everywhere. Be sure to get your stall reservations in to Tracey Marttila ASAP. Jackie Wintjen and I are still looking for some volunteers for the June show. We need a good ringmaster, whether it’s for one day or both, in gate and out gate help, maybe an announcer apprentice and helper, and just some general helpers over the weekend to set up games, trail, western riding, etc. The WalMart in Hastings has generously donated a beautiful, big (28 burger capacity!) gas grill to the WMAR which we will be raffling off sometime this summer. Be sure to watch our website or contact a board member for more info. Don’t forget that we have the WMAR Incentive Fund. There are three divisions, Open Halter, Open Judged Performance and Open Gymkhana. A one time payment of $35 and a nomination form is all it takes to apply for each division. WMAR points are counted, with the two WMAR sponsored shows giving double points, and at the end of the year all entry money is divided on a dollar amount per point basis and paid out at the year end banquet. You can contact Tami Vickery for application forms and more information. For up to the minute information, be sure to check out our website at www.wmarapp.com You will find lots of WMAR information as well as fun photos from last show season. Sharon Clark

EQUINE TIMES — MAY 2010
There is no shortcut to achieving ‘true collection’ By Steven M. Lantvit - Clinician, Trainer, Instructor & 2009 CHA Instructor of the Year In our pursuit of horsemanship and our search for improved performance some are willing to try anything for a quick solution to achieve collection. But, the reality is that there is no substitute for the hard work and hours of practice that is required to achieve true collection. True collection cannot be achieved by a stronger bit or tools that force the horse into a position. What I offer is a natural approach to achieve softness and to work with the horse and not against them. For a lack of a better term, I am after a holistic approach in the training process, one that the horse will understand and allow him to learn in a natural manner without force. Many of the horses that arrive by have been already started but have hit a road block in their training process. One of the biggest mistakes I see is the horse that has been asked to be collected too soon. Too often, people are not willing to put in the time to develop the foundation that leads to natural collection. I like to think of the horse as a spring, where the hind end of the spring is
Page 10
Toll-Free: 800.222.6336
pushed or ridden into the front. This riding forward builds up energy and rounds the back of the horse thereby lightening the front end. The problem with the bigger bit theory is that the horse is reluctant to move forward. This causes the horse to stop driving from the hind end, and the shoulder and the back to drop. The horse is often reluctant and locks up in the shoulder. What is needed is not a bigger bit or a stronger hand but an exercise that works on the natural mechanics of the horse and allows the horse to understand what is being taught without pain or intimidation. Think of the spring, and imagine pushing the spring forward on a table with your finger. Then take your other finger and gentle slow the spring down, just for a second or two. Notice the center of the spring will bend upward off the table. This is collection. Slow the spring down just for a second and then release the spring forward. The release is just as important as the collection if we want to teach self-carriage. A simple exercise that I like to use to start to achieve collection is a downward transition exercise. I start with the horse soft and giving to the bit. I walk the horse forward and wait on the horse to be relaxed. When I feel that he is ready, I push the horse forward into a collected trot just for twenty to thirty feet, then, I transition down to a walk for a stride or two. After a few steps at a walk, I transition back to a collected trot for twenty to thirty feet, then back down to a walk for a stride or two. I will repeat this exercise five or six times around the arena and then stop collected. I will then change directions and repeat the same exercise again, making sure to work both sides of the horse equally. This exercise should be performed three or four times in both directions. What I am waiting on is the horse to elevate at the shoulder in the upward transition and not elevate at the head and neck. What makes this exercise so wonderful and easy for the horse to understand is there is a built in release that allows the horse to search for self collection. As the horse advances in the training process, his self-carriage will last longer and longer, and the horse will feel lighter in your hands. Steven Lantvit is a full-time Clinician, Trainer and Instructor whose goal is to contribute to the betterment of the relationships between man/woman and horse. His background started from English disciplines such as polo and jumping and has expanded greatly over nearly 2 decades to include the western disciplines. With a wide array of experiences across both disciplines, his focus on training is that of all around horsemanship and the creation of the versatile horse. Steven is located at Highgrove Farm, in LaPorte Indiana, www.highgrovefarm.com.

MFTA Michigan Fox Trotter Association The annual meeting with officer election was held April 17 at Valley Family Restaurant in Flint. A number of members attended as well as two guests, Al Fritzler and Laurie Marble, who own MFTs. After introductions were made and the lunch eaten, the meeting commenced. The 1-23-10 Secretary’s report and updated Treasurer’s report were accepted. Discussion then moved to fundraising ideas, such as offering an instructional trail camp clinic, inviting a clinician from Missouri, or utilizing Jim McKenney or another known in-state instructor to conduct a clinic on gaiting. Money is needed to cover the monthly costs of the Association’s bank account and website as well as promotional and office materials. Additional funds are needed to conduct future clinics and association activities. At the March Stallion Expo, a few people bought raffle tickets, MFTA T-shirts and corn pillows. A couple of people renewed their membership. Mostly people took free promotional material and information about buying their first fox trotter. Discussion concerning 501(c)3 followed with Al Fritzler suggesting that we look into 501(c)7 instead as the latter is more appropriate for groups of our size. Charleen Ostrom volunteered to find out more about that. Our association needs one of these classifications so we will be able to accept grants and donations, provide tax-deductible receipts as well as access group insurance at a discount. Charleen announced that her term as the Region 8 MFTHBA representative will be expiring in the fall. She does not plan to run for that position Page 20

again, as she feels her time will be better spent on the MFTHBA trails committee. Charleen and George Ostrom would like to split the cost with others to rent a people camping trailer to stay in at Celebration in Ava, MO, this September as all of the hotels are booked. Contact her soon if you are interested. It would be great to see all the horses showing there. Contact the MFTHBA main office if you would like to reserve a horse trailer camping spot to either show or participate in a trail ride starting from the show grounds. The results of the 2010 officer election are as follows: President - Chuck Fanslow; Vice President - Sandi Roath; Secretary - Marilyn Mannino (reelected); Treasurer - Charleen Ostrom (reelected); Director (3-year term) - Jim McKenney. The two-year director and MHC delegate positions are still available. Sandi Roath stepped down from the two-year director position when she became the vice president. Please contact an officer soon if you would like more information on serving in these offices. Secretary Marilyn requested one year’s worth of reimbursement for one black ink cartridge and postage for newsletters to members who prefer to have their newsletters snail-mailed to them. The members present approved this request. The mbmership next voted to allow President/Webmaster Chuck to investigate purchasing a better web address for MFTA, which should bring us more traffic. Please note that our website now has video on it, showing the proper walk and foxtrot gaits. A number of horses are now for sale on the classifieds page. RHAM Ranch Horse Association of Michigan The Board of Director’s of RHAM have been busy this winter planning the 2010 Events and they are already in full swing. On March 27 we had great attendance at the Introduction to Ranch Horse Clinic at McKinley’s Harmony Acres in Cassopolis, MI where everyone got to enjoy fellowship with their fellow Ranch Horse friends and learn the basics of the classes offered at a Ranch Horse Show. May 1st we will return to McKinley’s Harmony Acres in Cassopolis for their 17th Annual Horse-A-Thon to raise money for Area #17 Special Olympics. This is a nice approximately 3-hour trail ride on local farms, followed by a hog roast and auction of donated items. May 8th we will be returning to McKinley’s Harmony Acres for a third time hosting a Horsemanship/Trail Clinic with Dave McCartney. Dave will cover horsemanship skills of how to control your horse’s body parts and negotiate the obstacles on a trail course. May 22nd we will be hosting a Introduction to Cattle Clinic at the Square D in White Pigeon. This is a Clinic for horses and riders that have had little to no cattle experience to learn how to read cattle and introduce your horse to cattle and track cattle. Then it’s on to the shows June 12-13, July 17-18 & August 7-8 again at the Berrien County Youth Fairgrounds. To encourage Pre-Entries to ease the burden on the Show Office Staff you will get discounted Entry Fees by Pre-Registering for the shows online through our web site. Please note that our website has changed to www.miranchhorse.com. Please visit the site regularly to keep up to date on RHAM Activities, News and Pre-Register for the shows! Hope to see everyone soon! Betsy Carls, RHAM President

maybe 2 miles before the logging starts and you can’t get through. YSTRA needs to get with DNR and get this problem taken care of. We might have to have an extra work bee date to clear or reroute trails. Building Committee: Stumps and trees have been removed and cleared for the pavilion. Roger Gliddon is checking into the cost of stabilizer. YSTRA is hoping to have the pavilion framed and roof on this year. Non profit 501(c)3: The status is currently pending with the IRS and should be taken care of by our next meeting. Judged trail ride: YSTRA is hoping to have a judged trail ride this summer. We are looking into what it would cost for insurance for this event. This is a big commitment so if any one would like to help anyway they can, please let someone on the board

SWMHBC Southwestern Michigan Horse and Buggy Club April 11, 2010 - Hartford, MI President Margie Godines called the meeting to order at 2:37 p.m. The secretary’s minutes were accepted as read. The treasurer’s report will be placed on file for audit. Thank you again to Cal and Minnie Sadler for hosting the club’s meetings all winter. Old Business: Audit Report-Chairman, Dave Heater presented the audit report with recommendations that our treasurer be reimbursed for publishing The Traces—the club’s newsletter, and any other expenses she had incurred the past year. Thanks to Tina Streeter for another year well done. Debbie reported on the workshop offered by The Southwest Michigan Planning Commission and West Michigan Trails and Greenways Coalition. Bonney Meachum attended the Introduction to Driving Refresher Course at Willow Tree Equestrian Center on April 3. Suzy Krueger and Carol Williams attended the seminar on Handling Equine Emergencies. Last month, Tina approached the club with the idea that a tent could be shared with the buggy club and the Van Buren Draft Club to display vehicles and help with a fundraiser dinner. The discussion was tabled to the April meeting.
A motion was made by Cal Sadler and supported by John Streeter to continue to use Barn# 8 for the buggy club display at the fair. Motion carried. Many club members felt that the club has great visibility and wanted to stay at their present location. Some members stated that they would be happy to work at the Draft Club dinner on Saturday. A motion was made by Mel Glover and supported by John Streeter to adjourn the meeting at 3:07 p.m. Motion carried. Submitted by Debbie Glover, Sec. 2010 Schedule of Events (tentative)

Michigan Horse Drawn Vehicle Association The April 18, 2010 meeting was called to order at the Equine Sports facility in Fenton, by President Dorothy Childs. Due to time limits reading of the secretary and treasurers reports were waved. There was a bill presented for payment for postage to mail the Show Bills for the Blue Ribbon Horse Show. Volunteers needed for the show. A sign up sheet will be place on the silent auction tableMotion made and passed to pay the bill. The silent auction tables were set up in the hall just out side of the indoor arena. The newsletter is being readied for publication. Any one who has an article they would like to submit to Michelle V, please send it to her asap. The Drummond Island drive has a change of date. It will be the week of July 18.
