2014 will be a yearlong celebration of the four seasons and we are so thrilled that you have decided to share one or all of them with us. This year promises to be one of our best! The hills and valleys of Licking County make it one of the most spectacular places to see winter in all of its frozen glory. If keeping active is on your list this winter, then don’t miss your chance to take a spin on the ice at The Lou and Gib Ice Arena or take a hike in the cold solitude of Dawes Arboretum, Flint Ridge State Memorial or Blackhand Gorge. Feeling more daring? Then join the crowd for a sled ride down the “big hill” at Gellar Park. If a simple get away is more your style, then consider cozying up close to the fire at one of our premier hotels, bed and breakfasts or country inns…there is no better way to watch the snow fly! There is nothing more rejuvenating then seeing the daffodil, tulip and dogwood lined streets of Granville, Alexandria, Johnstown, Utica and Newark as spring makes its way into town. These cities and villages are some of the best examples of planned, mid-western, Ohio towns anywhere and they offer something for everyone. Their restaurants, coffee houses, curiosity shops, art districts and small town vibes will make you glad spring has arrived…in style. It wouldn’t be summer in Licking County without a trip to Buckeye Lake for a day of boating in one of Ohio’s most beloved recreational lakes or swimming in one (or both) of our indoor or outdoor water parks…it brings out the kid in all of us. Nothing says summer quite like ice cream and luckily, Licking County is home to one of Ohio’s oldest family run ice cream producers; Velvet Ice Cream (plus, they are turning 100 years old this year. Stop by and wish them a Happy Birthday). An evening stroll or bike ride on our nearly 40 miles of paved hiking and biking paths is a great way to top off your summer day in the County before saying “goodnight” to the perfect summer day. Autumn brings us to the close of another year in Licking County and her abundance is evident in the burning reds, oranges and yellows of our many acres of parks and recreational green spaces. The pumpkin fields are over flowing with those big orange gourds and which one of us doesn’t feel like a kid again when we find that perfect one? Our farmer’s markets and pick your own orchards are full of the harvest too and offer the perfect ingredients for your fall favorites. The sun is setting earlier now, so it is the perfect time to take in a show at the beautifully restored Midland Theatre or get in one last chilly stroll through any of our historic town squares. To be honest with you, we didn’t have a lot to do with the amazing seasons here in Licking County, but we do have a lot to do with making sure that you enjoy them as you spend time with us. Be sure to visit us at escapeto lickingcounty.com for complete planning information, events and more. Thank you for planning your travel season around ours…there really is no better time to “escape” Best wishes and safe journey, Dan Moder, Executive Director dmoder@escapetolickingcounty.com Amista Jackson, Front Office Manager/Designer ajackson@escapetolickingcounty.com Ron Bower, Marketing/Sales Manager rbower@escapetolickingcounty.com

Discover

Ye Olde Mill One hundred years of family If you piled everything Velvet Ice Cream has ever made into a football stadium, you’d have . . . a sticky mess. Ice cream melts, you know. If you were to put together every family gathering, every celebration, every relaxing evening that Velvet Ice Cream made possible, you’d have a century and counting of good feelings and lasting memories. That’s the heritage of Utica’s Dager family. Their honored ancestor Joe Dager left Lebanon by steamship in 1903, sailed to America, and by 1914 found himself in the basement of Ritchey’s Confectionary in Utica, Ohio. His hand-cranked vanilla struck a chord then, and Velvet’s “Olde Tyme Vanilla” is still a leading choice of ice cream lovers. Could Grandpa Joe imagine the fourth generation of his family making ice cream flavors like “Moose Tracks” and the fan favorite “Buckeye Classic” in total quantities of over five MILLION gallons? When you think about that immigrant spirit, you have to suspect that he might well have imagined all this, and more. “Each generation in our family passes down the same important business ethics of hard work, dedication, endurance, and learning how to get along,” says Andre Dager, part of the 10 Greater Licking County Convention & Visitors Bureau

fourth generation of the family to run Velvet Ice Cream. Now people migrate from all over the country, plus a few international visitors, to see Ohio’s only ice cream museum, over 150,000 a year during the spring, summer, and fall. The historic “Ye Olde Mill” south of Utica is where the company moved in the 1960s as the business grew, and grew, and grew. The restaurant and museum, housed within a building set where a millwheel has turned since 1817, are connected physically and spiritually to the ice cream factory; tours are available to see where over five hundred flavors are made. From the mix tanks to the packaging room, a freeze tunnel takes the ice cream down to Minus 130 degrees. All of this high technology supports the delivery of a delicious product whose hallmark under the Dager family has been: “quality ice cream made from simple ingredients.” Ice cream doesn’t last. You can’t leave it setting out on the counter, and even in your freezer it has a way of disappearing. But what ice cream can do to bring people together and lift spirits: that’s what lasts, and what Velvet Ice Cream intends to keep doing for another century and more.

Natural views on a human scale

At a mile a minute, the most beautiful scenery can recede into a blur. On a bicycle, the miles still roll by at a pleasing pace, but the landscape shifts into clearer focus. Here in Licking County, we are blessed with a combination of rails-to-trails, right-of-way paved paths, and well marked roadways that open up much of our area to riders and walkers (or runners!) alike. From Johnstown on the west edge of the county to Hanover and beyond to the eastern border; through legendary Blackhand Gorge and its state nature preserve; across our southern farmlands to the historic National Road – your access to Licking County is accented by paved paths for bikes, in-line skates, casual strolling, or cross-country running. Extending over 30 miles, an amount that’s growing each year, you can travel from Granville’s inns to downtown Newark’s restaurants; your path can wind from giant basket shaped buildings to scenic views along majestic river valleys to a world class golf course. Within the county seat of Newark, you will find trailhead facilities off Cherry Valley Road including parking and drinking fountains. The city has also worked to establish and mark bi-

cycle lanes to connect the eastern county trails across the street grid to the western network. The Licking County Health Department has a number of online tools available for you to find trail sections of a length suitable for you and your travel partners; the Licking Park District maintains most of our paved bike trails, and offer twentyplus miles of hiking and riding trails, most of which is only a mile or two of roadway cycling from a connection to one of the paved & dedicated paths. Dawes Arboretum also offers over eight miles of hiking trail enjoyment through their acreage, and a four mile one-way loop congenial to casual cyclists as well. If you want to cover some ground, but get to know the land you’re covering, there are few better ways to do so than a bicycle, and Licking County is the place to make the most of that sort of travel. We’re moving quickly towards a day when every community in this region can be reached safely and comfortably on dedicated bike paths, and the amount already connected has to be ridden to be believed! Come pedal across Licking County, and find the journey as pleasant as the stops along the way.

Brewing up a tour Years ago, if you had grain from the harvest you wanted to preserve and trade, your options were few, but brewing and distilling were at least sure. The nutrition and value of the crop you’d so carefully tended could be shared over a distance, or later in a year, with a little more care and, believe it or not, technology! Brewing has long been considered one of the arts and sciences of civilization, possibly even preceding agriculture itself. For six thousand years, people have made beer, going back to some of the earliest clay tablet texts in ancient Mesopotamia, and two thousand years ago in Ohio, archaeologists suspect the mound building Hopewell culture of Native Americans brewed fermented beverages as a part of their way of life. Just a hundred years ago, Licking County like most areas of the Midwest had dozens, possibly over a hundred breweries – their various bottles still an obsession for collectors! One block in Newark might brag across the street that their neighborhood’s brewery was better than the others’, and there was really only one way to test out the question . . . Today, our county is home to at least three breweries, with more in the works. The Granville Brewing Company and 28 Greater Licking County Convention & Visitors Bureau

the Buckeye Lake Brewery can be found pretty much where their names suggest, and the Homestead Beer Company is in Heath, in a high tech area associated with companies like Boeing and Kaiser Aluminum . . . but a reminder of the fact that brewing takes equipment, time, and skill, or in other words: a technology! Craft microbrews are growing in popularity all across the United States, even as global brands enter the marketplace. It is in reaction to the commercialization and standarization of beers, stouts, porters, and the like that a variety of seasonal beers of locally sourced products have become so popular. Not only are these Licking County breweries selling their wares close to home, including on tap at Brews Café in Granville, but they’re hosting tours – remember those neighborhoods arguing whose is best? Due to their size, only group tours can see all three (so far), and you are encouraged to contact us to find out information about the next “brewery tour” in our area. If you go on one, you’ll not only explore a goodly swath of Licking County, you’ll be taking a trip through history and culture as well. Let’s toast our ancestors’ wisdom in handing down this tradition, kept alive in the Land of Legend!
