Better home and garden 4 trends that help you focus on functional, fabulous improvements GANNETT NEWS SERVICE
F
reshen your nest with some well-chosen projects that emphasize comfort, practicality and enhanced value for your home. Many retailers are offering special discounts and services when you cash your economic stimulus check with them.
Refine outdoor space
It’s no longer just a yard or a patio, it’s an extension of living space. Outdoor furniture has gotten plusher and outdoor cooking equipment has gotten more sophisticated. Fireplaces are a focal point, from a portable pit to a masonry masterpiece. Most states are dealing with rainfall shortages and even water restrictions, so conservation and easy-care plants are in the forefront for landscaping. A sprinkler you install yourself gives you control over watering for about $159.
Garden gems Today’s interlocking pavers can transform a lawn into a maintenancefree living space or help define garden areas with walls and paths. They run $2 to $4 per square foot. Native plantings — the flora of your state’s original landscape — are hardy and require little water. Perennial flowers provide color and variety but don’t need replacement. Small ponds or fountains add interest and soothing sounds. Low-voltage or solar lighting is the jewelry of your landscape; new styles are high quality and sophisticated. Source: Metropolitan Builders Association
Easy-care perennials provide renewable garden color and variety. HOME DEPOT
Interlocking pavers, such as Riverstone, re-create the look of stacked stone, brick, cobblestone or marble for walls, patios and walkways. They’re available at Home Depot stores and landscaping companies.

Updates with impact
The bathroom is giving the kitchen a run for its money when it comes to household style — and it’s easier to upgrade the smallest room in the house without spending a fortune. Focus on affordable accessories that make a big impact; a granite vanity top with undermount sink runs about $400; faucets start at $100.
Choose quality materials that are current, but not trendy. Don’t be afraid of paint color — it’s easy to change. Khaki and earthy tones are hot now. Refinish dingy cabinets with an antique or distressed look, or replace just the doors. Mimic the texture of luxury materials with stone-look laminate and vinyl. Update hardware with a matching set in brushed nickel or oil-rubbed bronze.
Transform a bath with Bionic Products furniture ($160 to $400) and Danze faucet ($400), all at Sears.

SEARS
CRATE & BARREL
Jardin chair is made with certified sustainable hardwood, soy- or plant-based foam and fibers. $800 at Crate & Barrel (www.crateandbarrel.com).
Refurbish with a social conscience
The eco-friendly trend is still gathering steam as mainstream manufacturers offer organic, natural, recycled and repurposed products for the home. And if you still think “green” means dowdy or boring, take another look at today’s stylish interpretations. Paint a room with fumefree paint for less than $100 or invest in a new sofa for $1,800..
Buy green Seek out organic cotton fabrics or textiles with a gentler environmental impact such as linen, hemp and wool. Look for products made of reclaimed lumber and recycled materials. Choose wood from managed forests or sustainable species like mango and bamboo. Water-based finishes have fewer toxins that common varnishes, lacquers and shellacs. Buy local products to reduce the carbon dioxide impact of shipping miles. Source: Sustainable Furniture Council
FRONTGATE
Modular cabinets can customize and beautify garage storage. Hercke system components start at $289 at www.frontgate.com.
Reclaim the garage
Remember when the garage was simply a place to keep the car? Now it’s home to workshops, sports equipment, lawn mowers, extra refrigerators and more. Organization systems help you keep this area neat and functional; every home store offers a version. Or expand your space with a new storage barn for $600-$800.
Everything in its place Hang shelves and hooks to store things along the walls. Storing in the vertical plane gets your clutter off the floor. Organize your overflow of clutter with utility cabinets. Keep your workshop essentials clean, protected and close at hand with toolboxes and chests. Source: Lowe’s
HOME DEPOT
Freshaire Choice paint contains no volatile organic compounds, gases that may cause health problems in some people. Cost: $30 to $40 per gallon at Home Depot; other manufacturers offer similar products.

Buying the perfect flat-screen HDTV doesn’t have to break the bank if you shop smart
T
GANNETT NEWS SERVICE
he most affordable prices yet and an impressive number of features make this a perfect time to buy a high-definition, flat-screen TV or add a second one to the bedroom or kitchen. Models that cost about $1,000 last year are now priced in the $600 range, and you can even find some more compact sets for as little as $400. In order to get the most out of any flat-screen purchase, you’ll want to consider where in your home you plan to place the TV and how you plan to use it. You’ll also want to understand key features of high-definition TV so you can make sense of the jargon you hear when shopping. Here’s a quick guide about what you need to know: LCD vs. plasma: LCD sets are based on liquid-crystal display technology, which is brighter and less reflective than plasma screens. That means it generally works better in a well-lit room. It also works well for playing video games or as a secondary computer monitor, perhaps for showing off digital photos or video. Plasma sets have deeper blacks and more contrast. They work well in a room you want to dedicate as a home theater, providing a cinematic experience when you dim the lights. Plasma sets used to suffer from “burn-in” when the same image is displayed on the screen for too long, but recent models don’t have this problem. 1080p, 1080i and 720p: These are measurements of the set’s ability to display HD programs at different screen resolutions. The 1080p resolution is the finest resolution, but only
high-def DVDs, such as Blu-ray discs, and a few HD cable broadcasts support it right now. More HD broadcasts are available in 1080i, which is just a step down from 1080p, but 720p is the most popular resolution for HDTV. The latest generation of “upconversion” DVD players also work with 720p. Support for higher resolutions will continue to grow so go for the highest you can afford. LCD sets generally support 1080p or 1080i, while plasma sets are more likely to use 720p. HDMI and DVI ports: These are digital connectors that let you take advantage of the set’s high resolutions. Make sure the set you buy has one or both. Digital connectors should support a standard called HDCP for watching copy-protected programming. Look for a set with at least two digital connectors because you might want to hook up the set to a digital cable box and a DVD player. Screen size: While it might seem like you should buy the largest screen you can afford, take the size of the room and how you place the TV into consideration. If you live in a one- or two-bedroom apartment with a smallish living room, a 32-inch or 37-inch set should be fine. Anything larger will overwhelm the room. Even smaller models can work well in a bedroom or kitchen. Built-in tuner: If you have cable or satellite TV, you tune in programming through the box or dish you received from your provider. If you still use an antenna to tune in broadcasts, look for a flat TV with a builtin tuner. Look for models that can receive both analog and digital broadcasts.

Computer upgrades Buy the kids a PC of their own or invest in a new system for yourself with these hints f the kids are hogging the computer sending instant messaging or updating their MySpace pages, consider using your economic stimulus rebate to buy a PC just for them. You can find a model that should meet most of their needs starting at about $300. If you have a $600 or $1,200 rebate coming, you have more options. You could use the money to buy your son or daughter that laptop he or she needs for school. A number of student-centric models cost about $600. Or you could upgrade your own computer to a more powerful model that you can integrate with your TV, stereo and other home entertainment gear. When you’re shopping for a new computer, take these factors into consideration: ďż˝ Memory: You’ll need at least 1 gigabyte to get started, but 2 gigabytes is essential, especially if the computer comes with Windows Vista, which gobbles memory. ďż˝ Operating system: The majority of systems will come with Windows Vista, but you might be better off looking for a model you can buy with Windows XP, which performs better with less memory. Macintosh OS X Leopard is another alternative. It should be a serious choice if you’re worried about Internet threats because few viruses or spyware programs are written to attack it. ďż˝ Video card: Affordably priced systems often use “integrated graphics,â€? which means the PC’s graphics circuitry shares memory with the rest of the computer instead of having its own memory. This makes the system more affordable to manufacture, but it also reduces performance. Integrated graphics are too slow for the latest games. If you want to play games,
Tips for buying a second or third PC You don’t necessarily need to buy a new monitor. As long as the picture is solid, monitors from older computers should work just fine for a kids’ computer, for instance.

Consider adding a wireless home network. If you don’t have one set up already, you can put one together for less than $100. Home networks require a network router ($50 to $80), which connects to your cable modem or DSL connection. Computers should be able to connect to the router using a wireless connection or via a wired Ethernet cable. The router should support the 801.11b and 801.11g wireless standards and include a built-in firewall to prevent attacks from hackers. Setting up a home network also will allow you to share a printer among several computers.

you’ll need a system with “discreetâ€? graphics, which resides on a separate circuit board, includes its own processor and has its own graphics memory. ďż˝ Bundled software: Most home computers include some programs to get you started, but know what you're getting. The bundled anti-virus software often expires after 90 days, for instance. And some programs are trial versions that can be difficult to remove if you don't want to keep them after their evaluation period.

nergy-saving appliances and home improvements help slow global warming as they rein in your utility bill. Make sure any appliances or electronics you buy have the Energy Star label, which means they’ve met strict federal standards for energy efficiency and will save you an average of 30 percent in energy costs from similar products without the label. Here’s a look at some of the energy-saving products your economic stimulus check could buy.
$300 Install a room air conditioner for $100 to $300 rather than a much more costly central air unit. Those with an Energy Star label use at least 10 percent less energy than conventional models and typically include timers that allow you to use the minimum amount of energy. Replace as many traditional incandescent light bulbs as possible with compact fluorescent light bulbs, which cost about $3.50 each. They use at least 60 percent less energy than standard lighting, generate 70 percent less heat, and last up to 10 times longer. For about $100, install a programmable thermostat. When used properly, the thermostats can save you about $150 a year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Install ceiling fans to help cool your house in the summer and cut down on airconditioning costs. You can get a good quality one for about $100.

An energy-efficient dishwasher can save you more than $30 a year in utility costs if you use it to replace one made before 1994, according to the federal government. An Energy Star-qualified clothes washer starts at about $600. It can save about $550 over the life
of the machine compared with a standard one, according to the EPA and Energy Department. If you have less than 6 or 7 inches of insulation in your attic, you should add more for a total thickness of about 10 inches, according to the Alliance to Save Energy. This can save up to 20 percent of your heating and cooling costs, the alliance estimates.
Let’sShop How Energy Star works When you see an Energy Star label on a product, it means that it has met strict federal standards for energy efficiency. Some of these products will cost you more to buy, but will give you greater savings over time by helping reduce your energy bills. In 2007 alone, the program helped Americans save
$16 billion on their utility bills and prevent global warming emissions equivalent to those from 27 million cars, according to the EPA. The Energy Star label can be found on products in more than 50 categories, from computers and TVs to refrigerators, clothes dryers and air-conditioning units. It can even be found on new homes that are constructed with energy-efficient features.
To find specific Energy Star appliances Consult the product guides at www.energystar .gov. For more tips Check out the nonprofit Alliance to Save Energy at www.ase.org or the Sierra Club’s Earth Day site at www.sierraclub .org/wecandoit/.

Tankless water heaters are 50 percent to 70 percent more efficient than traditional natural gas or electric models.

Use the U.S. Department of Energy’s “refrigerator retirement savings calculator” at www.energystar .gov/refrigerators to see how much you can save if you replace your old fridge. Tankless water heaters, which range from about $900 to $2,000, are up to 50 percent more energy efficient than a traditional natural gas water heater and up to 70 percent more efficient than an electric water heater. You only pay to heat water when you need it.
