“Bid me run, and I will strive with things impossible. And yea, get the better of them.” – Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar Father Lawrence Schottelkotte has been running for 40 years. Not on and off , not when he has felt like it, not only when the sun was shining and his feet weren’t dancing in a fi eld of blisters. Every day, since Aug. 10, 1979. On the day he presided over his sister’s funeral, he ran. On the day he offi ciated a wedding, he ran with the groom at 6 a.m. He kept running on the day in the ‘80s when he rolled across the hood of a Volkswagen Beetle, whose driver was turning left and not looking right. “I’m OK,” he said to the terrifi ed driver. “Just drive carefully.” He ran four miles from where a tornado was touching down in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He ran through what he believed was a crime scene in Hyde Park. Forty years is a long time unless you’re a rock. Forty years is a while to those of us required to put one foot in front of the other, day after day, lest we risk being lifetrampled. It’s more than 14,000 days, if you’re counting. Father Larry counts, sort of. He’s aware of his streak, yet mildly surprised anyone else would be interested. “I’m the only one to whom it’s meaningful,” he says. He’s mindful of maintaining it, even as he is 80 years old, and the term “run” has become relative. The well-practiced shuffl e he learned by watching the legendary distance man Bill Rogers has served him well. He never does less than a mile, enough to calm the skeptics who’d suggest Larry would count a light jog to the refrigerator as maintaining the streak. Usually, he manages four miles or fi ve. From All Saints Catholic Church in Kenwood, he starts north on Montgomery Road, turns left on Cooper, past Zig Zag, through Swaim Park to Monte. Left on Monte, to Wimbledon Court, where several All Saints parishioners live. And so on. You’ve heard about the notion of runners being a “community.” Dedicated souls, set apart by doggedness and shin splints. Father Larry is a community of one. No day passes without someone waving to him when he happens by. He has become as familiar in Montgomery as Montgomery Inn. Once, a passerby took his picture, then made it into a painting and presented it to him. Larry’s not terribly stuck on Larry, so even as he appreciated the artwork, he doesn’t know what he did with it.

He has never been seriously hurt, never blown out a knee, never sprained an ankle. His feet and toes resemble the root system of a redwood, a sight he blames not on running, but on his love of tennis in his 20s. He has tripped and fallen, a tumble that resulted in 13 stitches on the back of his hand. He did have a slight hamstring issue in the early 80s. “I hobbled through it,” Larry said. He’s 5-10 1⁄ 2 and 152 pounds, down from the 160 he owned for many years. His resting pulse rate is 48. When the weather permits, he runs shirtless. People gasp in pleasant surprise. He stopped competing against himself long ago. Between 1975 and 1984, Larry ran seven marathons. His goal was 3 hours, 20 minutes. His best time was 3:28. He has never owned a pedometer. “When I run, I run. I don’t want to make it more technical than that,” he says. The streak started after an oﬀ hand remark made by

one of Larry’s brothers in the Society of Marianists. “By the time you’re 35, you’ll be fat like the rest of us,” the guy said. Larry was 18 then, a recent graduate of Purcell High. “I remember thinking no, I won’t,” Larry recalls. He started running in June 1964. Five days a week, two miles a day, a way to get in better shape to play his favorite sport, tennis. When the church transferred him to Kalamazoo, the tennis faded. The running picked up. He has been at All Saints for 20 years. Father Larry holds no oﬃ cial position there. He calls himself an associate pastor. He says Mass, makes home visits. He leads the sort of minimalist lifestyle you might expect. He eats very little red meat, has one piece of peanut butter toast with preserves for breakfast and usually no lunch. Back in the days before there were dozens of brewers in Cincinnati, there were just a few micro-breweries that also served food. The Queen City Group ran several, including Watson Bros. in Blue Ash from 19962006. It was in the large building that now is The Firehouse Grill. Now they're bringing the spirit of Watson Bros. back as an addition to the restaurant, which will now be known as Firehouse Grill Brewery. And they've got Watson's former assistant brewer to run it. Dan Shatto was at Watson Bros. from 2003-2006. He has spent fi ve years at MadTree in the meantime. They'll be installing a 7-barrel system. Shatto said they won't be up and brewing until mid-September, when they'll have three consistent beer off erings, probably an IPA, an amber ale and something lighter, along with another handful of styles in rotation. Firehouse Grill already serves a lot of taps of local beer and will continue to serve those. Their menu is beer-friendly, with sandwiches and fi sh and chips, burgers and entrees like meatloaf, pasta, brown sugar pork chops, ribeye, lemon-caper chicken. They have one of the nicer outdoor patios in the area, too. It's at 4785 Lake Forest Drive in Blue Ash.

“Lord Jesus, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” He’ll fi ll parishioners prayer requests while he runs. The rosary will get a workout. Running itself is an act of faith. A belief that along the way your feet won’t fi nd a pothole or a crease in the sidewalk, your calf won’t seize up. The driver of the car turning left from the cul de sac won’t fail to see you coming the other way. “Faith is evidence of things that appear not,” Father Larry says, paraphrasing a familiar quote. “Faith is something that takes us beyond what reason can do.” Few people of reason would run every day for 40 years or even entertain the thought. It takes people of faith to do that. “I do view the world diff erently in some ways because I run,” says Larry. “It helps me defi ne what life is for me, on this planet.” Running is putting one foot in front of the other until the race is run. Metaphorically we all do that, in one form or another. Running toward our dreams, running away from our pasts. Running to keep up with the day. We don’t run the way Father Larry runs. Not literally. “I’ve slowed up enough, people who used to say enjoy the rest of your run, say enjoy the rest of your walk,” he says. “It doesn’t bother me at all. Aging is aging.” At 9:15 or so this morning, Father Lawrence Schottelkotte will slip on a pair of red Asics sneakers, size 11, and the one pair of red shorts he currently owns, and he will go for a run. He’ll pray some and pay attention to the ground beneath his feet. Nothing heavy, nothing profound. It’s just a run. Striving with impossible things and hopefully getting the better of them. “I run like an 80-year-old, I’m an old, slow runner,” Father Larry decides. “I hope I age gracefully.” The apostle Paul said, “I have fought the good fi ght. I have fi nished the race. I have kept the faith.” That’s appropriate, Father Larry decides. That could apply to him.

miles on it that he drives to “Kroger, the post offi ce and visitations on Thursdays.” If we fi gure he runs an average of fi ve miles a day, after three years, his feet would have more miles on them than his car. He works at All Saints in a pair of Teva sandals he has owned for a decade. He doesn’t own a pair of dress shoes. To him, dressing up means adding a pair of socks. Larry isn’t an ascetic, but you can’t run for 40 years without the sort of discipline that demands you give up some things. I asked him all sorts of existential questions, believing there must be Big Reasons he has run every day for 40 years. I mean, the man is not Forrest Gump. Why do you run? To something? Or away from it? What do you think about? What’s the greater purpose, Father? “I run to stay in shape. I like it. That’s it,” he said. “I think about whatever comes to mind. I watch the territory, so I don’t trip.” Sigh. That doesn’t mean there is not spirituality involved. He is, after all, a priest. “In its own way it is” a spiritual experience, he said. “The mind will go where it goes. In my situation, sometimes it will go to prayer.” His favorite prayer is simple and repeatable. “Kind of a mantra,” he says.

‘People Over Porsches’ loses ﬁ rst round in proposed dealership expansion Jeanne Houck Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

The proposed expansion of a dealership that sells Porsches and other pricey automobiles in Columbia Township has cleared the fi rst of three government hurdles. A neighborhood group called “People Over Porsches And Parking Lots” says it will continue to lobby against the expansion. “We recognize the benefi ts that Porsche of the Village has brought to our area,” Stacey Bryant-Rose, a member of the neighborhood group, said. “We just want to see development happen within the currently designated commercial zones.” The Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission recommended Monday that the county’s Rural Zoning Commission greenlight the rezoning of four residential lots at 6742 through 6748 Cambridge Ave. for retail use. “After respectfully attending many meetings and fi ling a careful legal response before Monday’s commission meeting, we were surprised and disappointed by the commission’s lack of attention to our community’s arguments and concerns,” Bryant-Rose said. “We’ll continue to raise our concerns at upcoming meetings.” The owner of the four lots on Cambridge Avenue wants to raze the vacant houses and allow Porsche of the Village and three other automobiles-sales businesses at a multi-brand dealership at 4113 Plainville Road to build a 71space parking lot for their inventory. Part of the property could be used for a building addition to a Maserati/Alfa Romeo showroom planned to be constructed on adjacent property at Cam-

bridge Avenue and Plainville Road that until recently was home to a Dollar General store. The Hamilton County Rural Zoning Commission will conduct a hearing on the matter Thursday, July 18, after which it will decide whether to recommend that the Hamilton County commissioners approve the zone change. Woeste Investments Limited of Anderson Township owns all the property involved, including the Porsche of the Village site that also is home to Maserati of Cincinnati, Alfa Romeo of Cincinnati and Volvo Cars Cincinnati East. Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission staff had recommended the regional planning commission approve the zone change, noting that the Columbia Township comprehensive plan has designated the area as a neighborhood business corridor with a mix of residential, retail and offi ce uses. People over Porsches says a parking lot used to store cars is consistent with industrial zoning, not a residential-retail-offi ce mix. When the Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission decided to recommend the rezoning be approved, it was with conditions crafted by its staff . The conditions included there be no new driveways or freestanding signs along Cambridge Avenue, that a 10foot-tall privacy fence be built on the western side of the site, that lighting be restricted and that no loudspeakers be used. The Columbia Township trustees supported the regional planning commission staff recommendation, according to a letter Township Administrator Mike Lemon sent to the Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission.

Tomato shallot “relish” Red onion can be substituted for the shallot. A little goes a long way. Dress it up by putting relish in a radicchio leaf. Ingredients 2 cups or so tomatoes, cut up (about 1-1/2 pounds) 1 shallot, diced small or thinly sliced (you may not need it all - go to taste) Handful chopped basil 1/3 cup red wine vinegar or more to taste 3/4 cup olive oil Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste. Instructions Toss tomatoes, shallot and basil together. Whisk vinegar and oil together. Pour over tomatoes, mix and season.

Well, what a surprise I had yesterday when I went out to pick raspberries. A tiny baby fawn was curled up in the middle of the elderberry patch next to the raspberry rows. Now like with many of you, deer are more than a nuisance. I have a feeling it was the babe’s relatives who nipped the ripe raspberries from the stems and

chomped down a row of sunﬂ owers the night before. A frustrating sight. But that little creature looked up at me so trustingly….I didn’t have the heart to shoo it away to the ﬁ eld. One plant they’re leaving alone (so far) are the tomatoes. My Rapunzel cherry and grape tomatoes are ripening nicely so I picked some to make this pretty and yummy side dish. I call it a relish, though technically it’s not, since relishes are usually made with minced vegetables. I served it alongside grilled chicken, though it can stand alone as a salad.

Wash tomatoes and dry well. If they have a lot of moisture on the skins, they’ll accumulate frost. Place in single layer on cookie sheet. Don’t let them touch each other so that after they’re frozen, they won’t stick together. Freeze hard, uncovered, then transfer to containers. Roast before freezing: After washing and drying, place in single layer on cookie sheets. Drizzle with olive oil. Add a sprinkling of garlic and/or herbs, or roast plain. Roast at 400 degrees until they wrinkle a bit, about 10 minutes or so. Cool and transfer to containers. How to use: Now you can’t use frozen tomatoes fresh, since they lose texture and shape when thawed. Skin on or off? I use the frozen tomatoes with the skin on, but if you want to remove skins prior to cooking, put tomatoes in a colander, run a bit of warm water over and you should be able to remove skins. (This works with larger frozen tomatoes, too). Perfect for soups, sauces and other cooked dishes. I use them just like canned tomatoes. Frozen cherry tomatoes last up to a year but are best used within 6 months.

Mike’s Carwash donates $6,792 to The Foodbank of Dayton to support tornado relief efforts Mike’s Carwash proudly presented a check for $6,792.09 to The Foodbank of Dayton on Thursday, June 6. The donation was a result of a one-day fundraiser held on Saturday, June 1 at all of Mike’s Cincinnati and Dayton carwash locations. During the event, Mike’s discounted their best wash, the Ultimate, to $15 ($20 value) and donated $1 from each of these washes purchased in Cincinnati and Dayton back to The Foodbank. Plus, Mike’s collected additional donations onsite. Mike’s Beavercreek location was damaged in the tornado and is closed until further notice as they work to rebuild the location to continue to serve the Beavercreek community. Unveiling of Meshewa House at Turner Farm set for Sept. 7 Besides being a farm, Turner Farm, Greater Cincinnati’s largest organic farm, is also focused on health. Among its goals is educating the importance of fresh, organic, properly prepared foods in nourishing our bodies through classes and programs conducted out of its on-site demonstration and teaching kitchen. The farm also partners with local doctors who have developed programs to educate patients on how best to embrace a healthy relationship with foods, as well as programs educating doctors and medical students on nutrition, diet and proper food preparation for themselves and their patients. With that focus, Turner Farm has fostered a close association with Dr. Carina Braeutigam of Cincinnati Childrens Hospital and Dr. Sian Cotton at the University of Cincinnati’s Center for Integrative Health & Wellness. The newest development at Turner Farm is the restoration of The Meshewa House, a rural and elegant 1930s manor house that is situated within the 220acre property. LOVELAND - Less than a week after her brother, Jaxson Hayes, was an NBA lottery pick, Loveland’s Jillian Hayes announced her college commitment for basketball. The 6-1 versatile scorer for Coach Darnell Parker’s Lady Tigers will play for Michelle Clark-Heard at the University of Cincinnati. Hayes and Loveland just visited UC for a team camp and she attended numerous games during the recent season. “I love the atmosphere and what Coach Heard has going there,” Hayes said. “I think I’ve always known. Whenever I stepped on campus my parents even said I just light up when I’m with the staff or the players.” While her 6-11 brother out of Moeller and Texas was prepping for last week’s NBA Draft, Jillian and her mother were in Minnesota working on her hardwood resume. Both later joined the family in New York for Jaxson’s big night at the Barclays Center. “It’s been a whirlwind,” Jillian’s mother Kristi Hayes said. Added Jillian, “It was awesome! It was really surreal. Especially when they called his name. I went,’They didn’t just call his name?’ I knew he could do it if he put his mind to it.” A day after her announcement to stay in town for UC, Hayes and her Loveland teammates were at Purcell Marian for some summer league action. From the frills of New York City, mother and daughter were back in the familiar confi nes of a steamy gym. Unlike Jaxson, who didn’t start at Moeller until his senior season when he sprouted to a 6-10 gazelle, Jillian has started and led Loveland in scoring in her fi rst three varsity seasons. Her averages have jumped from 7.9 to 15.6 to 17.3 points per game. She also pulls down around eight rebounds per game and has led the Eastern Cincinnati Conference in steals the past two winters. “The two have totally diff erent stories,” Kristi Hayes said of her two eldest. “Jillian’s always been in there. DURHAM, N.C. - Loveland High School multi-sport athlete Luke Waddell has followed up his baseball season at Georgia Tech by being selected to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. Following his season with the Yellowjackets, Waddell was picked in the 32nd round by Arizona. Waddell hit .322 in his sophomore campaign. At Loveland, he played three sports and is the all-time leader in games, hits and doubles for Tiger baseball and rushing yards, receiving yards, touchdowns and points in football. Waddell joins Ashland’s Tyler Brown, a pitcher from Vanderbilt, as the only Ohioans on the roster. to a resort,” Waddell said. He then joked that after a long day on a bus in North Carolina that he was “looking forward” to a 14-hour plane ride. Waddell was impressive in tryouts, scrimmages and exhibitions to make the 26-man roster. The team will be reduced to 24 for the Japan trip.

In addition to his four-year baseball and football career at Loveland, Waddell played for the Midland Redskins prior to heading to Georgia Tech. He was The Enquirer Baseball Player of the Year at the Greater Cincinnati Sports Awards in 2017. As for his future in baseball on American soil, Waddell will not sign with the Diamondbacks and will continue his Georgia Tech Yellowjacket career. He could be selected in a future draft.

They’re two opposite ends of the spectrum but they both have found their way to where they want to go.” Loveland has ﬁ nished third in the ECC with Hayes the last two seasons and Coach Darnell Parker is glad the celebrated senior has her decision out of the way. “Coach Heard got a great player,” Parker said. “I know that Jill really loved the UC program. Jill’s a complete player. She’s going to be able to play on the perimeter or she can play on the post if they need her to. She’s going to continue to get better and stronger as a

player.” Hayes is the second of four children of Jonathan and Kristi Hayes. As documented last week in Jaxson’s dramatic surge to the forefront of pro basketball, Jonathan Hayes is a former NFL tight end and assistant coach with the Bengals. He now is head coach of the St. Louis franchise in the XFL. The basketball talent comes from Iowa high school legend Kristi (Kinne) Hayes who averaged 52 points per game her senior year in high school and went on to become a Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year at Drake. “I’ll give it to her, she’s the best bucket in our family,” Jillian Hayes said grinning. “Including my older brother.” Michelle Clark-Heard guided the UC women to a 24-11 mark last season as they advanced to the quarterﬁ nals of the WNIT. SCHOOL NEWS Rad tech students maintain a tradition If you are a new graduate from the radiologic technology program at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College, you can expect to do extremely well on the national certifi cation exam that is required to earn your license. In fact, nearly every single student who has graduated from the program since 2006 has passed the exam on their fi rst attempt. There were 21 new graduates from the program this spring. All of them recently passed the national certifi cation exam conducted by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) the fi rst time they took it. Over the past 13 years, 283 new graduates from
