Colerain Township Police Officer Dale Woods' family heard what they already knew at his funeral Monday, Jan. 14. “Your dad’s a hero," Colerain Police Chief Mark Denney told his three children. "And being a hero doesn’t require that you die in a fiery explosion or that you have some innate skill for carrying a football or a tune. "But it does require you be willing to give everything, including your life, for a purpose greater than yourself. And if that doesn’t describe your dad, I don’t know what does." Officer Dale Woods, 46, died Jan. 7 after being hit by a pickup truck Jan. 4 as he worked at the scene of a crash. Family, friends, and colleagues recently gathered at Xavier University's Cintas Center for the final farewell service for Officer Dale Woods. The service followed a weekend of processions and visitation to allow the community to pay its respects and private visitations and ceremonies for family and colleagues. A somber stillness in the Cintas Center was broken as a lone bagpipe played followed by Woods’ flag-draped casket, escorted by fellow officers. Music and speakers set the tone for what was a remembrance of Woods, a man of many interests who lived to serve his community and loved his family and three children. James Love, the chaplain for Colerain Township Police Department, spoke of Woods’ interest in music, car detailing business, and his love of golf. He also spoke of his commitment to serving his community. “To serve and protect was more than a motto to him,” Love said. Colerain Police Chief Mark Denney

Cincinnati artist, Michael Coppage sparked controversy with his Charlottesville and The Appropriation paintings from his American + collection on display at the Cincinnati 21c Museum Hotel. “I try to educate people about what the paintings are about so that they don't feel singled out or misrepresented or triggered. I know what that feels like, that's what this whole series is about,” said Coppage. “It's about the misrepresentation of people who look like me and how that impacts my ability to be successful.” Coppage holds artists talks upon request on the third and fourth floors at 21c Museum Hotel to discuss his paintings. In addition to the talks, he also writes artist statements about each of his pieces. Although he wanted to initiate a civil conversation, some chose to send letters of hatred to his home in Monfort Heights and online through private accounts. Coppage expressed that the hateful remarks were not threats on his life but merely stereotypical remarks such as: “Go back to Africa.” He attributes the criticism to his Charlottesville painting. Choking back tears, speaking directly to Woods' children, Trinity, Hallie and Collin, Colerain Township Trustee Raj Rajagopal called Woods a "hero." He was not the first to directly address Woods' children nor the last. In presenting a Bible reading, Love said that that one day, everyone's story will be told. Today is for sharing Woods' story, he said. Early in life, Woods decided what his story would be, Love said. It would be a story about a life dedicated to service. He never got a factory job. He only took jobs where he was in service to people. "Dale got up every day knowing full well what he was doing that day," Love said. Not only was he doing what he wanted, but it was the right thing, he said. In closing, Love said, we need to make a promise to Dale Woods. "We will tell the story of Dale and that his story will continue on even See WOODS, Page 3A

Family: Girlfriend showed ‘lack of humanity’ after man’s OD death

After doing heroin with her boyfriend in a Sharonville motel room, Kathryn Carmen passed out. When she woke up, he was on top of her, not breathing and apparently dead, court documents say. Carmen, 34, was scared. She didn't know what to do, according to her attorney. She told police she pushed 34-yearold Jacob Ryan Tackett to the floor and tried to perform CPR – something Tackett's family doesn't believe is true. Carmen said she then passed out. The next day, on June 11, 2018, she covered Tackett with a sheet and left his body in the motel room for three more days. During that time, she told police she stayed in the room "on and off," and used the rest of the heroin. She even bought more. She also drove Tackett's car and took money from his wallet, his family said. Carmen, who pleaded no contest in December to gross abuse of a corpse, was sentenced Wednesday, Jan. 16 in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court to six months in jail and two years of probation. Judge Robert Winkler ordered her to complete drug treatment. "You have no idea the pain you have caused my family," Tackett's sister, Krysten, told Carmen. "You sentenced my family to a life sentence because of your

selfishness, your heartlessness and your lack of humanity." Tackett's mother, Kim Tackett-DeBord, said her son was left to die alone, "with no one there who loved him." She said Carmen should have called 911 – that someone who overdoses "can appear purple and blue" and still be revived with the drug Narcan. "I don't believe you started CPR," said Tackett-DeBord, who is a nurse. "You were not in a heroin haze the entire many
days you left my son lying there." It was an employee at the Crossland Economy Studios who called police after going into the room. “The odor of decomposition was overwhelming and could be smelled from the parking lot,” court documents say. Carmen, who is from Akron, has been held at the Hamilton County jail since November. Her bond was revoked after she didn't show up for court hearings in August and September.

David Yost. Smith repaid the money to the district in November. The incident occurred during the 2016-2017 school year. Auditors said Smith tracked payments of marching band fees using an accounting system that was not approved by the district. The system showed that 84 students paid him participation fees totaling $8,340, but he only submitted $6,965 to the district treasurer, auditors said. This is the second time in 2018 that state auditors have reported problems at Colerain High School. The district’s previous audit found that a former basketball coach owed the school nearly $8,000 for the mismanagement of a fundraiser.

of posting the finished product, Coppage began receiving hate mail. That was in July. The paintings went on display at 21c in November. Yet, he was unphased by the negative attention. “At first it was funny. I thought it was a joke and then another one came and another one and another one. I don't want to say I felt fear because if I survived Chicago I'm not really worried about someone rolling up over here,” Coppage said. “What I felt, I felt for my wife and my son.” Coppage admits that he made it easy for his critics to find his address and has since stopped tagging his location when posting photos of his paintings. He expected the hate mail because of how the white race has been depicted in art throughout history. “White people are kings, queens, angels and even Jesus in art,” Coppage describes. “White people are held at such high esteem in Art. I'm trying to build a bridge of empathy. You're being depicted as three-fifths of a human being, but we legally were three-fifths of a human being for a long time,” he said. “Imagine being treated that way, imagine being the physical property only to get free and then your image still belongs to another ethnic group. These paintings aren't about white people; these paintings are about black men.” Charlottesville and The Appropriation will be on display at the 21c Museum Hotel until May. They are part of the hotel's "Elevate" Program, which gives opportunities to young, local artists. Coppage wants to eventually make “American +” an installation where people can walk through the three-dimensional project and experience a wide range of emotions. “It's going to fundamentally change who you are. I really believe that,” he said. Education and a provocative discourse motivates Coppage to paint his social commentary pieces. He has used his artwork to discuss mental health, excessive waste caused by humans and the interaction between police and African-Americans, just to name a few.

though he's not here," he said. Following the service, a procession left Cintas traveling to Spring Grove Cemetery for a final service in the Rose Garden. Looking to pay their respects to fallen Woods, people lined Spring Grove Avenue, watching and waiting for the funeral procession. The usually busy street was so silent you could hear the purr of car engines as police cruisers from all over the Tristate passed. It was a long line of cars, SUVs and fire apparatus and took more than a half-hour to pass the Frisch’s on Spring Grove Avenue. People stood, some with flags, some with their hand over their heart, to honor Woods. Fairfield resident Jon Pernell said he came because he thinks it’s important to honor a man who served his community — his father was a firefighter, so he knows the sacrifices those men make. He said he wanted to show his respect for the officer’s family and fellow officers. Ethan Glunt, 20, waited for the procession on the roof of his truck, an American flag affixed to the back. “I grew up with Dale’s kids,” he said. “I wanted to show my support for the family and the police.” Gary Wenstrup was in the North College Hill Explorer’s Post when Dale Woods was a firefighter there. Took me home, but dropped me off a couple doors from the house so I wouldn’t get in trouble with my folks.” He said a video showing Woods playing ball with some kids in the neighborhood in Colerain Township happened not far from his home. “It’s important to have that in a community,” Wenstrup said. “There is a lot going on and people forget about the good that police do. You want to teach your kids that police are good people." He waved the Back the Blue Flag as the procession passed. “I bought it when Sonny Kim was killed,” he said. “I say thanks to all of them. Ever want to make homemade goetta? Here’s how Rita’s Kitchen
Rita’s Goetta
Rita Heikenfeld
The weather report is calling for several inches of snow. A goetta making day! Granddaughters Eva, Emerson and Ellery are coming to spend the night, so when they wake up to this winter wonderland, they’ll start the day with a hearty breakfast of goetta and eggs. (Husband Frank will have to shovel a path to the chicken pen so the girls can fetch the eggs). Goetta is a stick-to-your ribs kind of dish. But guess what? It originated in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky, not in Germany. For the history, recipes from readers, and step-by-step photos of this recipe, check out my site.
Tips from Rita’s kitchen ❚ Goetta is not hard to make, but the technique can’t be rushed. ❚ Fresh pork shoulder/butt is the traditional cut of pork to use. ❚ Pinhead oats are sometimes called steel cut oats and require a very long cooking time. Do not substitute regular oats. ❚ Savory has a peppery flavor.
Do you make goetta? Share your goetta recipe/stories! Rita Nader Heikenfeld is an herbalist, educator and author. Find her blog online at Abouteating.com. Email her at rita@com munitypress.com with “Rita’s kitchen” in the subject line.
My German in-laws’ recipes don’t include beef broth, poultry seasoning or savory. Those are my additions to boost flavor. Cook meat and veggies on top of the stove and finish goetta by cooking oats and the cooked meat in the slow cooker. Ingredients 3 pounds fresh pork shoulder/butt, cut in half to fit pan 3-4 cups each: chopped onions and celery (include celery leaves) 4 dried bay leaves 3 tablespoons salt and 1 tablespoon black pepper or more to taste 1 nice teaspoon poultry seasoning (opt) 2 teaspoons savory (opt) 8-10 cups water or more if needed, or half beef broth and half water 2 pounds pinhead/steel cut oats Instructions Put meat, onions, celery, bay and seasonings in large pot.
Homemade goetta and eggs. RITA HEIKENFELD FOR THE COMMUNITY PRESS

oats, stirring to blend. Put lid on and cook on high 2-3 hours, stirring occasionally, until oats are thoroughly cooked, tender, and mixture is very thick. If necessary, add more water as oats cook, but be careful.
Strain meat and vegetables through colander. Save liquid. Shred meat. Push some of vegetables through colander. I add both to the oats.
The mixture, when cooked, should be pasty, and thick enough for a spoon to stand up in without falling over. Oats should be difficult to stir.

to cook, covered, for about 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Add seasoning if needed. Remove bay leaves. Line bread pans with sprayed foil. Put goetta in, smoothing tops. Cover and refrigerate for 12 hours or so to set up. Store in refrigerator a week or several months in freezer. To serve: We fry it with bacon until both goetta and bacon are crisp on both sides. Or in bacon grease.

Viewpoints Before joining a gym, read the contract first Sandra Guile Guest Columnist Community Press USA TODAY NETWORK
A new year brings New Year’s resolutions, and if 2019 follows the trend of years past, the number one goal for many people in the U.S. will be to lose weight. After the indulgence of the holiday season, advertisements for gym memberships can feel especially difficult to ignore. However, if you’re thinking of signing up, consider all of your options before committing to an expensive contract. There are a few different ways to determine whether or not a gym is the best way to achieve your New Year’s goals. Go take a look Set up an appointment with a staff member and visit the facility at the time you normally plan to workout. This will give you an idea of how crowded the gym will be and how long you’ll have to wait in line to use the equipment. Ask about the club’s hours of operation and the total number of people enrolled. Make note of how current
the equipment is, how clean the facilities are, and how often they receive service. Ask the important questions While walking through the facility, ask about what personal training services are available and where those classes are held. Look for health clubs that hire trainers certified to meet national standards, as not all of them do. Heed the advice provided by official organizations like the American Council on Exercise, the American College of Sports Medicine, the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and the National Academy of Sports Medicine. Ask if the health club requires additional inhouse training so the instructors stay up to date on their certifications. See if there are monthly options A low-priced year-long contract may sound tempting, but if you’re still not sure about fully committing to a long-term contract, ask if a month-to-month plan is available. Remember, the weather will eventually get warm enough for outdoor exercise, but the membership fee will still be due each month. Read the contract Once you’ve visited the facility and
asked about all the amenities and classes available, don’t feel obligated to immediately sign a contract. Take the contract home and read it carefully before signing to determine whether or not it’s right for you. It should include all the services provided, including any group fitness classes offered, as well as any other benefits discussed in your visit. Make sure you understand the total cost, payment schedule, enrollment fee, and length of the membership. Ask about cancellation fees and their limitations before signing up. Joining a gym is a great way to get healthier and meet new people, and the new year is a great time to start. Beloved coach Kerin dies at age 94 Mark Schmetzer
Special to Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Coach Dick Kerin, as photographed in 1968. ENQUIRER FILE PHOTO
Dick Kerin was contemplating back in 1975 the 100th win of his high school football coaching career, but his dominant memory was of a loss by his Aiken team to Withrow sometime in the mid-1960s. “We didn’t belong on the same field with them, yet we played them a great game,” said Kerin, who started the Aiken program when the school opened in 1962, at that time. “It was one time I lost that I really felt gratified with the way my kids played.” Kerin, a football assistant at Taft and Western Hills before leading the Aiken
and Greenhills football and wrestling programs, died Jan. 9 at age 94 after having been wounded twice in the South Pacific while serving with the Marines during World War II and returning home to build a memorable coaching career. “Coach Kerin was a World War II hero, a tremendous teacher, a very successful coach and greatly admired by those in the teaching and coaching professions in Cincinnati,” Dan Starkey, who coached at Roger Bacon against Kerin on football fields and wrestling mats, wrote in an email to the Enquirer. “The Dick Kerin/UC Football Clinic was named in his honor due to his prowess in creating the Southwest Ohio Football Coaches Association.” Kerin retired in 1983 after a 34-year
career of teaching, primarily of history, and coaching. He finished with records of 130-117-11 in football and 156-74-5 in wrestling. Ironically, while football was his first love and the sport for which he was most famous – from being named a Little All-American as a guard at Southwest Missouri State, where he met Gini, his wife of 65 years, to coaching several times in the local East-West High School Football All-Star Game – he achieved much more success in wrestling, where he guided several teams to league and district championships. He described the frustration of finishing second six times – four with Aiken in the old Public High School League See KERIN, Page 2B

Lakota West girls basketball hands Princeton first loss Mark Schmetzer
Special to Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
The Greater Miami Conference girls’ basketball race made Lakota West’s visit to Princeton monumental. That Firebirds coach Andy Fishman was seeking his 400th career win only added a touch of history. Chance Gray and Kailyn Dudukov-
ich helped Lakota West and Fishman leave with two accomplished goals. Gray sank five 3-pointers on her way to career-high 22 points and Dudukovich tied her season and career high with 16 as the Firebirds took an early lead and held off the previously undefeated Vikings for a 61-50 win – Lakota West’s ninth straight in the series. Viking junior guard Willow White scored 21 points, 14 in the second half,
and junior guard Ashley Davis added 11 for Princeton, which went into the game 13-0 and 7-0 in the GMC, leading 11-1 and 7-1 Lakota West by a half-game. The Firebirds were ranked sixth in the Associated Press Division I statewide poll, four slots behind the secondranked Vikings. Princeton fought back to cut Lakota See BASKETBALL, Page 2B

and two with Greenhills in the Hamilton County Suburban League National Division – shortly after logging that 100th career win. “I’ve finished second so many times, it’s disgusting,” he said then. “Now that I’ve won my 100th game, that’s the next thing I can shoot for. Someday, I want to coach a league champion.” He would finish second one more time, in 1979, before finally capturing that elusive, gratifying championship in 1980 with a Pioneers team that went 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the HCSL National. Kerin was known particularly for developing quarterbacks and being willing to take chances on young ones, from sophomore Marlin Styles at Aiken in 1970 to sophomore Steve Moss at Greenhills in 1971 to Moss’s successor, Ron Shiver, who was named secondteam all-city by the Enquirer as a senior in 1974 and also was an accomplished wrestler. Shiver almost ended up at Wyoming, where his father, Rex, originally planned to steer him, but an unusual set of circumstances developed that kept Ron Shiver at Greenhills under the tutelage of the patient Kerin. “He’s a great man,” Rex Shiver told the Enquirer at the time. “If I was in his shoes, I don’t know what I would have done. He’s been just great. Sometimes, the best decisions are the ones that don’t happen. “It really couldn’t have turned out better. At Wyoming, (then coach) Bob Lewis favors a running game. He had two of the best backs in the city, but Dick Kerin plays a wide-open passing game. He gave the opportunity for Ron and he never once held anything against him.” Kerin developed a reputation for employing a calm demeanor, steering himself away from the maniacal, arm-
waving, foot-stomping ways of many of his peers and, admittedly, of himself in earlier days. “I’ve learned a lot over the years,” he told the Enquirer in 1981. He was speaking as a wrestling coach. “It finally hit me that there’s nothing I can do for the kid on the mat. When a kid goes out there, he’s got to fight the guy himself. I can’t help him. “I can’t go out there for them, and it doesn’t do any good to yell at them anymore. For one reason, I can yell at them on the mat all I want, but they usually won’t hear me because of the crowd noise – and they usually don’t listen to me anyhow.” Kerin was respected as much for his teaching as he was for his coaching. “Every bit of information available would indicated that he is an outstanding coach and an outstanding individual,” Greenhills-Forest Park School District superintendent David Harcum said when naming Kerin as the Pioneers’ new football coach. He reportedly was one of 32 candidates for the job. Perhaps his enduring legacy will be one of producing teams that were noted for their discipline and honesty. “I believe this, and there may be some who scoff, but I’ve always taught kids to play by the rules,” the Silver Star winner and owner of two Purple Hearts told the Enquirer when he retired. “I’ve never believed that you get an edge on somebody by violating the spirit of the rule or to take them out and practice somewhere hidden from people. “I’ve always thought it was important that, when you teach kids, you teach them something besides winning. A lot of that’s going on today. It’s gone so far overboard, this emphasis on winning at the cost of everything, that it’s disturbing. I felt that, if you have to cheat, it wasn’t worth it.” Glory Days is a regular feature of Enquirer Media celebrating key moments, personalities and teams in Cincinnati’s rich prep sports history. Send your story ideas to mlaughman@enquirer.com.
