The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is going to have an information session in Colerain Township to talk about a proposed expansion that would add 25 years of life to the Rumpke landfill. The landfill is getting a permit from the Ohio EPA. This is not a public hearing. That will happen later in the permit process, officials said. There will be a presentation about the expansion and residents can ask questions at this meeting. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Colerain Township Senior and Community Center, 4300 Springdale Road. Zoning issues surrounding the expansion of the landfill at 3800 Struble Road

were settled in 2015 with an agreement between Colerain Township and the landfill. The landfill is now seeking a permit for that expansion. The proposed expansion of Rumpke Waste and Recycling’s Hughes Road Landfill, if approved, would bring the landfill’s footprint to 939 acres. Currently, 330 acres of the site are permitted for waste disposal. The proposed expansion includes a lateral and vertical expansion. The landfill receives about 10,000 tons of waste per day, according to Molly Broadwater, spokeswoman for Rumpke. She said the eastern expansion would add an additional 240 acres for waste disposal, which is about 105 million cubic yards of space.

That would add about 25 years of capacity to the landfill, she said. Rumpke is having an open house 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 20 at the landfill,10795 Hughes Road. Residents can tour the landfill, learn more about the expansion and ask questions at that event, as well. Residents can send comments about the expansion by mail to Ohio EPA, Division of Materials and Waste Management, P.O. Box 1049, Columbus, OH 43216, or by email to dmwmcomments@epa.ohio.gov. The expansion application is available online. If a draft expansion permit is issued, there will be an additional opportunity for public comments.

Greenhills Police Chief Neil Ferdelman says officer initiative and instinct were the keys that locked down a credit card scam that stretched from West Chester though Greenhills and Cincinnati and into Northern Kentucky. Ferdelman said a group of criminals defrauded merchants out of merchandise with Neil values that will easily Ferdelman exceed $100,000. He said the work of Greenhills Police Officer Zachery Clark was instrumental in stopping the fraud. Clark was called to Bargains and Buyouts, 50 Eswin St., to investigate possible misuse of a credit card. The clerk told the officer that the suspects had left after the suspicious transaction was processed and were returning with trucks to load up the furniture that had been purchased. Clark returned to the store to conduct surveillance in an unmarked police vehicle and watched the suspects return with two rented U-Haul trucks and two vehicles used to lead the trucks to their destinations. Ferdelman said all of the vehicles were followed but the trucks split up. Sheriff names deputy still in critical condition after hit-skip Sarah Brookbank Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

The Hamilton County Sheriff's deputy who was struck by a vehicle and dragged Thursday, Oct. 4 in Springfield Township has been identified. Deputy Curtis Taylor was directing traffic in a construction zone in Seven Hills Drive. The driver that struck him at 11:43 p.m. fled the area. The sheriff's office said Taylor is a veteran with the Sheriff ’s Office for 21 years. Taylor is still in critical but stable condition at University of Cincinnati Medical Center, officials said. The striking vehicle was a 2000s model royal blue Honda Civic, according to witnesses. The car was traveling northbound on Hamilton Avenue, approaching Sevenhills Drive. Taylor who was wearing a reflective vest, was assisting with traffic control near a marked sheriff's cruiser with its overhead emergency lights activated in the intersection. As the Honda entered the intersection it struck and dragged Taylor, according to the sheriff's department. Once the deputy separated from the Honda, the vehicle fled northbound on Hamilton Avenue towards I-275. The Hamiton County Sheriff's Traffic Safety Unit is investigating the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or that can assist in identifying the royal blue Honda Civic or its operator is asked to contact the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office at 513-825-1500.

The White Oak LaRosa's, in the community for more than 40 years, has a new, freestanding home at 5796 Cheviot Road, on the site of the former Dollar General. In February, Pete Buscani, executive vice president of marketing for LaRosa's, said the company jumped at the opportunity to own the new location and said the new restaurant would be open this fall. He wasn't wrong. The doors officially opened at the new restaurant Monday. The new LaRosa's offers more party rooms, parking for 70 cars and a drive up window. The Cold Spring, Kentucky, location

rived at their destination at Race and Green streets in Over-the-Rhine. All of the trucks were stacked full to their capacity with thousands of dollars’ worth of stolen furniture, police said. Ferdelman said the suspects have been going into stores to buy merchandise and used a credit card that had not been loaded or activated. The card actually had a zero balance. When the card did not go through, the suspects said they are going to call the telephone number on the back of the card. Instead, they then called an accomplice who pretended to work for the financial institution that issued the card. The suspect then asked the cashier to speak to the so-called bank representative, and the cashier was provided with a four-digit code to force the transaction through. The furniture thefts at Bargains and Buyouts began on Aug. 31 with more than $20,000 in purchases. They continued through Sept. 3, when more than $30,000 in purchases were made. On Sept. 14, a Hamilton County grand jury issued indictments for five suspects charged in the crimes and the prosecutor asked that warrants be issued for them. They are: ❚ Kevin Roberson, 24, Mount Healthy, 13 counts of felony theft, and seven counts of felony telecommunications fraud; ❚ Dionte Dorsey, 26, Roselawn, five counts of felony theft, and four counts of felony telecommunications fraud; ❚ Jacqueline Collins, 50, Madisonville, one count of felony theft and one count of felony telecommunications fraud; ❚ Ciarra Asbury, 24, Westwood, one count of felony theft and one count of felony telecommunications fraud and; ❚ Jacinda Humphrey, 19, Cincinnati, one count of felony theft and one count of felony telecommunications fraud. On Sept. 19, probation officers in Walnut Hills discovered additional stolen furniture from Bargains and Buyouts. Clark recovered stolen merchandise from surrounding jurisdictions which included furniture and stolen electronics such as widescreen televisions, computers and other digital devices. Police said since June, the group used fraudulent credit cards and bought alcohol, more than a dozen vehicles from small car lots, and even rented the trucks used in the commission of the furniture thefts. Other charges are still pending that will add to the current estimated loss of more than $100,000 in goods and services. Ferdelman said the loss in Greenhills alone exceeds $50,000. Agencies that participated in the investigation include Greenhills police, West Chester police, Springfield Township police, Cincinnati police, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, the Hamilton County Probation Department and agencies in Northern Kentucky.

The district decided it was more costeffective and safe to replace the bleachers, rather than continually repair and retrofit portions of the stands. While the spring track teams had to temporarily suspend home meets, construction was completed in time for the 2018-2019 football season. An enclosed decking system replaces the open bleachers. Electrical and wireless capabilities were also upgraded along with security features. WHY DO MEDICARE RECIPIENTS WILLINGLY

PAY MORE THAN $0 COPAYS?

LET’S THINK ABOUT THIS. Maybe it’s because people think if they’re paying more they must be getting more. Or that what they’re getting must be better since it costs more. Maybe they think if they make a change, what they end up with might not be as good. Or they simply may not be aware of their options. The fact is that with a MeridianCare Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO), you can get $0 copays for PCP visits, lab work, X-rays, urgent care visits and other medical services you use most. Plus, you get no-cost coverage for dental care, eyewear and hearing aids. MeridianCare plans even include Viagra/Levitra coverage, a free gym membership and no-cost transportation to and from your doctor appointments. And not only are there $0 copays, there are $0 premiums and $0 deductibles too.

Alert: Overdoses surging in Hamilton County Sarah Brookbank and Terry DeMio Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

The Hamilton County Heroin Coalition issued an alert warning of a surge of overdoses in the area. The coroner noted that nine deaths in the last seven days were likely from overdose, and health officials said hospital emergency department visits for suspected overdose were at 11 per day. That compares to a usual 9.1 per day three months ago, said Mike Samet, spokesman for Hamilton County Public Health. The coalition tracks the deaths and issues alerts when the numbers are higher than normal to first-responders, treatment providers and the public. "Out of caution and to provide situational awareness, we are issuing an alert regarding this gradual rise in overdose activity in the county," the alert states. Authorities did not say what is driving the current spike but did note that in the past, a change in which drugs are used can cause increases. "We really don’t know what causes the ups and downs," said Newtown Police Chief Tom Synan, a chief in the Hamilton County Heroin Coalition. "My belief is what is in the (drug) supply dictates what happens on the street. Also, it

is never one factor but multiple factors that contribute." "The alerts are to be reminders for first-responders and those interacting with street drugs to use caution and follow safety recommendations," Synan said. He added that crystal meth and co-

caine use has gone up nationwide, and often, and these drugs, like heroin, are being mixed with fentanyl. "This is especially concerning for all drug users who are not accustomed to opiates let alone such powerful synthetics," Synan said. Officials also released safety recommendations:

❚ Do not field test drugs or injection equipment. ❚ Have available and use necessary personal protective equipment (including gloves and respiratory protection). ❚ Carry extra doses of naloxone (Narcan) and administer multiple doses, if necessary. ❚ Administer naloxone for drug overdoses even when non-opioids indicated. Naloxone is sold over-the-counter in pharmacies throughout the area. Hamilton County Public Health through the Narcan Distribution Collaborative will also provide free Narcan after a brief training. ❚ Avoid mixing drugs, including alcohol, which increases the risk of overdose. ❚ Call 911 after every overdose, even if naloxone has been used. ❚ If you are a user, do not leave the ambulance or hospital against medical advice after naloxone has been administered to reverse the overdose. The naloxone may wear off before the opioids wear off – and you could go into overdose again. ❚ For referral to addiction treatment services, please call 513-281-7880 Hamilton County Public Health and the coalition created the overdose alert system in 2016, after a sustained period of overdoses hit the area.

Woman allegedly donkey kicked Springdale officer Max Londberg Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

A Cincinnati woman allegedly donkey kicked and slapped a Springdale police officer, according to court documents. Cabriney Littlejohn, 22, was indicted Thursday, Sept. 27 on a misdemeanor as-

sault charge. Officer Eric Braden responded last week to the area of Kemper Road and Princeton Pike in Springdale, where he says he witnessed Littlejohn chase and tackle another woman. Both women were detained, according to court records.

Littlejohn, as she was being led her into the station, allegedly "donkey kicked the (arresting officer) in the leg," according to court documents. Springdale Police Chief Michael Mathis did not immediately respond that Thursday to questions, including one about the definition of a donkey kick.

After being booked, Littlejohn allegedly reached through her cell door and slapped Braden in the face. Police initially sought a felony charge against Littlejohn, which was reduced to a misdemeanor in the indictment. Littlejohn posted a $40,000 bond one day later, according to court documents.

A crisp fall day calls for hot bowl of gumbo Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld

Remember the simple baked chicken recipe I shared last week? Well, I had purchased more chicken than I needed, so I decided to make a quick gumbo soup with the rest of the chicken. This is the gumbo soup I made for years in gargantuan quantities for our Holy Trinity church bazaars. It’s a nice soup for these cooler autumn days. I received an interesting note and recipe from Delhi reader Carol Graham who enjoys making her family’s favorite cucumber salad with a vinegar and sugar dressing. “I think I may have created it. I’ve never seen a recipe for this cucumber dish. It’s a family and potluck favorite,” she said. The difference between Carol’s salad and maybe yours could be that Carol doesn't presoak the cucumbers in salt water, and she finishes it off with sour cream. I’m going to make Carol’s version soon. How about you? Let our Community Press family know how it turns out if you do make it. Rita Nader Heikenfeld is an herbalist, educator and author. Find her blog online atAbouteating.com. Email her at rita@com munitypress.com with “Rita’s kitchen” in the subject line.

Chicken gumbo is a nice soup for these cooler autumn days. RITA HEIKENFELD FOR THE COMMUNITY PRESS

Carol Graham’s cucumber salad

Holy Trinity chicken gumbo soup

Carol didn’t specify the kind of vinegar. I would use cider, but clear would work, too.

1 cup rice

2 cucumbers, peeled and sliced

Go to taste on ingredients. If you buy broth, make sure it’s real broth, not simply flavored. Or if you want to see me make chicken broth from scratch, check out my Fox 19 segment where I show Frank Marzullo just how to do it.

⁄2 medium onion, sliced and diced

Ingredients

Sliced fresh parsley for garnish (opt)

⁄2 cup vinegar

1 generous pound boneless, skinless chicken, cut into 1⁄2” or so pieces

Instructions

Ingredients

1 1

1 cup water

1 bell pepper, diced

1 tablespoon sugar

1 generous cup yellow onion, diced

Salt and pepper to taste

2 ribs celery, diced

1 cup sour cream

3 nice cloves garlic, minced

Instructions

Palmful fresh basil, chopped, or 1 teaspoon dry basil

Mix cucumbers and onions together. Whisk vinegar, water and sugar together. If too tart, add more water. Pour over cucumber and onions. Refrigerate 4-5 hours or overnight. Before serving, drain cucumbers well. Then stir in sour cream. Blend well and serve.

1 large or 2 small bay leaves 4-5 cups chicken broth

1 can, 14.5 oz., diced tomatoes 1 box, 10 oz., frozen cut okra or as much fresh okra as you like,

Sauté chicken, pepper, onion, celery, garlic, basil and bay leaf in a bit of olive oil until chicken is just starting to cook and looks opaque. Add 4 cups broth, rice and tomatoes. Cook at a gentle boil until chicken is done, about 20 minutes. While soup is cooking, sauté okra in a bit of butter just until crisp/tender. Taste for salt and pepper. Remove bay leaf. Add okra and serve. Or serve okra on the side separately. Tip: Freezing bell peppers No need to blanch, just dice, freeze hard in single layer on cookie sheet, then pour into containers.

Viewpoints Replacing Brent Spence Bridge not a big priority with Chabot James Delp Guest Columnist Community Press

Have you ever wondered what the holdup was in replacing the Brent Spence Bridge? The Brent Spence Bridge was originally meant to handle 80,000 vehicles in a day. It now sometimes must carry 200,000 vehicles in a day. A bridge is functionally obsolete if it can no longer reasonably accommodate all the vehicles trying to cross it. The Brent Spence Bridge has been deemed functionally obsolete since the 1980s. A new, adequate bridge has already been designed. Its estimated cost will be $2.6 billion. It would have a total of 12 lanes and four emergency median strips on two levels instead of eight lanes and no emergency median strips on two levels as it does now.

Federal transportation studies have found that motorists waste 3.6 million hours of their time each year waiting to cross the bridge. Those same studies have found that motorists burn 1.6 million gallons of extra fuel each year while waiting to cross the bridge. The Brent Spence Bridge is the greatest single source of unnecessary air pollution in our region. The Ohio side of the bridge is in U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot’s Congressional district. Politicians almost never get specialinterest money to do infrastructure projects such as bridges, so replacing the Brent Spence Bridge is probably not the big priority with Chabot as he’d like us all to think it is with him. Where does Chabot get most of his special-interest money? Big business. According to the Federal Election Com-

LETTER TO THE EDITOR I will vote…. JB says her vote for Monzel is because he voted against the .2 percent sales tax. I beg to differ with her opinion. Considering the deficit, the county is faced with, .2 percent sales tax is the most sensible way to keep all our county services and spread the cost amongst the most people, not just the property owners. It would be the most painless, minimal tax, paid by all our citizens plus

mission, 48 percent of all of Chabot’s campaign money in 2016 came from big businesses or from big-business related PACs. Last December Chabot voted for President Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Bill. One of the things the bill did was to put a 21 percent flat tax on all corporate incomes. Until then, we had a graduated corporate income tax where smaller businesses paid a smaller percentage of their total income in taxes than did bigger businesses. Now every business pays the same percentage. Under the new law, a small business earning $50,000 in 2018 will see its corporate income taxes increase by $3,000. A bigger business earning $20 million in 2018 will see its corporate income taxes cut by $2.8 million. According to the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation, the net effect of

others who visit here, and hardly noticed. Some say it’s taxation without representation, but that’s not true. We elected those who represent us, and they have a monstrous task of balancing our budget while keeping services afloat. This is only Monzel’s part time job. I agree with the minimal sales tax to fix our deficit and spread the responsibility amongst more people. Ann Thompson Green Township

this law will be to reduce federal tax revenues by $1.5 trillion over the next decade. The bill did not contain any spending cuts whatsoever. Here we have a man who is the head of the House Small Business Committee voting in favor of a tax increase for small businesses and a corresponding but larger tax cut for big businesses whose net effect will increase the national debt by $1.5 trillion over the next decade. If you take $1.5 trillion and divide it by the $2.6 billion cost of a new bridge, you find we could be replacing 580 such bridges over the next ten years with that money. The problem is, big businesses are financing Chabot’s political campaigns – not the people queuing in line to cross the bridge. Sports Northwest golf’s Hughes excels on, off course Charlie Hatch

Cincinnati Enquirer

Bob Goodridge had no idea his best golfer was born blind. But standing at sectionals with Morgan Hughes and her family, the comment came up in passing, as if it wasn’t a big deal. Maybe there’s a reason for that: Hughes won’t let anything be a distraction or an excuse. “I’m a hard worker and I put a lot of effort into things,” Hughes said. On Monday, the junior became the second girls golfer in Northwest High School history to advance to the Division I Southwestern Golf Tournament, which is next week. On Tuesday, she spent her afternoon making bowls that will, once completed, eventually assist local food banks. Perhaps the two afternoons define her to this point. One side shows someone constantly pushing herself, whether it’s being a three-time Southwest Ohio Conference first-team selection in three years, in the National Honor Society academically, a leader in student senate or a marching band member. The other side reveals a selfless individual volunteering to help the hungry, campaign for Donate Life or assist her little sister, who’s 13 but is on oxygen, uses a feeding tube and has endured numerous heart surgeries. Even when Northwest needed more players for the softball team, Hughes decided to play. “My friend was playing and she was like, ‘Hey, we need players,’” Hughes recalled in a phone interview. “I was like, ‘OK, I’ll come out and play.’” Melissa Hughes, Morgan’s mom, said her daughter has a “heart of gold.” If there are opportunities, they’re used humbly, rather than taken advantage of. For their family, everything is appreciated. “Little things people take for granted are huge for us,” her mom said. When Morgan was younger, she was the recipient of two cornea transplants. Now, her surgeon considers her story a massive success. Morgan is his “golden coin,” according to her mom.

Former Princeton High School standout Darius Bazley is among players Christian Dawkins said via text – provided by the government – that he paid, according to a report via Twitter from Adam Zagoria. Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim insisted last month that Bazley, a former Orange commit, made a mistake and should own it, according to a report from syracuse.com, adding that Bazley has been advised not to play in the NBA G League "because he'd get killed." Earlier, Boeheim predicted that Bazley's decision to not play at Syracuse "will cost him," and that he wasn't sure Bazley will be selected in the 2019 NBA Draft's first round. Bazley announced in March that he would play in the G League instead of at Syracuse - the school to which he committed after decommitting from Ohio State. Bazley then said late last month – according to The Athletic's Shams Charania – that he had reconsidered and

April that he was entering the GLeague draft because it gave him the best opportunity to fulfill his lifelong dream of playing in the NBA. Boeheim said he wished Bazley well, but added that the G League will never take the place of college basketball as a path to the NBA for a top prospect. In March, Bazley missed Princeton's Division I regional semifinal loss to Wayne because he and teammate Dominic Pierce were suspended two games for leaving the bench in an earlier tournament win against Sycamore. Bazley had 11 points and 7 rebounds in the McDonald's All-American Game in Atlanta. He talked and played with a young boy with leukemia named Alex as he prepared for practice before the game. Bazley was one of 12 players selected to the USA Junior National Team roster at the 2018 Nike Hoop Summit in Oregon. He was named to the 2017 Naismith Boys' High School Watch List. come. While Goodridge said the golfer will occasionally ask where her ball went, she’s passionate about photography and film, taking digital media classes. She said she’s looking into the possibility of playing college golf at a school that fits academically, too. “Morgan goes out there promoting Northwest and wearing the ‘lightning N,’” said Northwest athletic director Brad Watkins. “She’s just a representation of what it means to be a studentathlete. She’s involved in several things.

She’s been a leader since she got on campus. “She’s taken a lot in her (three) years and getting everything out of the high school experience. She’s doing a great job of that.” As for golf, the right-hander developed with her dad, Rob, who’s also an avid golfer. Getting ready for districts at Glenview Golf Course East and South on Tuesday, Morgan said mental preparation, in addition to practice, is key. “I’ve been working hard to get to this point,” she said. “I would definitely like to make it onto the next round from districts. I’ve never played that far. I’d love to. This will be a great experience for me to keep going on.”

She was also named first-team all-city by the Cincinnati Enquirer for the second time. “Riley’s an outstanding athlete, captain and person,” Wyoming cross country coach Jim Frondorf said. “Everyone around her benefits seeing the example she sets at practice, in meets and in life outside competition.” Last spring in track and field, Bahr was the CHL champ in the 3200-meter run in 11:48.11, helping her team to a league runner-up finish. Bahr was also a member of the 4x800 relay team that won the CHL championship in 10:06.34. She repeated those titles in the SWO District championships, and was named first-team all-CHL and first-team all-city. Glendale Fire House addition groundbreaking On Saturday, Sept. 1, Glendale public officials, firemen and residents attended a ground-breaking ceremony to commemorate the beginning of construction for the addition of three fire department apparatus garage bays. A contact has recently been awarded to Perkins-Carmack Construction for the project in the amount of $698,745 and work is scheduled to begin this fall. Chief Kevin Hardwick began the celebration by thanking the many members of Council, staff and pub-

lic that had worked diligently to make the much-needed addition possible. The Chief noted that the historic Town Hall, which houses the fire house, was originally designed by Samuel Hannaford, who was a Cincinnati architect known for his beautiful and detailed design work, including Christ Church Glendale, McMicken College, and Music Hall, to name a few. Known for his work with historic structures, Glendale Architect Addison Clipson was hired by the Village in 2017 to design the exterior of the additions. The Glendale Planning and Historic Preservation Commission subsequently approved his plans as an appropriate additional to the 1890’s landmark structure. Mayor Don Lofty then spoke of the process involved preceding the ceremony and thanked the many officials, professionals and volunteers that assisted in the planning and design process. He then expressed thanks to the many volunteer firefighters, who risk their lives in the protection of the homes and families in Glendale, noting that the Glendale firefighters often go beyond the call of duty and cited their work in pumping out flooded basements and hosting social events such as the Pancake Breakfast. Mayor Lofty noted that the addition and remodeling

of the fire station is tangible evidence of the Village’s appreciation for their work and dedication and that it will provide a decent and safe living and working quarters, instilling a sense of pride in their being part of Historic Glendale. David Schmid, having recently retired as a Glendale Councilman and Chairman of the Fire Committee, then spoke of the review and study process that took place over some four years. After much study and evaluation, it was determined that adding onto and remodeling the fire station was the most sound and feasible option to provide much needed work space, storage and improved quarters for the fire department. Through value engineering the costs were significantly reduced for the project that will provide 50 years of useful service. The groundbreaking ceremony was well attended and included nine past and present public officials with spades in hand. Present were former Mayors Joe Hubbard and Ralph Hoop, former Councilman Dave Schmid, Councilwoman Nancy Macenko, Architect Addison Clipson, Administrator Walter Cordes, Councilman Mike Besl, Mayor Don Lofty, Fire Chief Kevin Hardwick, and former Fire Chief, Dave Moore.
