Brody Allen dies: ‘Today heaven welcomed home our little super hero’

Everyone learned something at a Colerain Elementary School assembly Monday. Students learned they don’t have to wait to be grown-ups to make a difference. And that Chelsea Clinton’s favorite pizza topping is cheese. The daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton learned that many students believe she needs Fortnite in her life. She admitted she doesn’t play the online game, but agreed to poll her nieces and nephews and if they think she should take it up, she will give it a try. That earned her a lot of thumbs up from students. Clinton was in Cincinnati for a book signing at Joseph Beth Booksellers in Norwood. She spent time Monday afternoon talking with students at Colerain Elementary School as part of the school’s visiting authors program. She is the author of several books aimed at young readers: “She Persisted: 13 American Women Who Changed the World,” “She Persisted Around the World: 13 Women Who Made History,” “It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going!” Clinton talked about her new book, “Start Now! You Can Make a Difference,” which presents a number of global and local issues in a kid-friendly way with examples of how youngsters across the country have started projects to address those issues and

change things for the better. The book touches on providing clean air and water, climate change, hunger, healthy nutrition, endangered animals, and some school/social issues such as friendship, bullying, and cyberbullying. The book also gives suggestions about standing up to bullies. It stresses the need to treat people with kindness. Colerain Elementary has hosted an impressive array of authors. Earlier this year, Jacqueline Woodson, the 2018-19 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature and author of “Brown Girl Dreaming,” “Harbor Me” and “The Day You Begin,” was a visitor to the building. Other noted writers who have stopped at Colerain Elementary School include Kevin Sherry, author of “I’m the Biggest Thing in the Ocean” and “The Yeti Files” series. Principal Colin Climer said the program is an opportunity for students to listen and learn from successful authors about their books and their lives. After her talk, Clinton answered questions and signed books. While some questions Clinton fielded were lighthearted, others were more serious. “Are you going to run for president?” asked one girl. “I don’t have any plans to run for office,” Clinton replied. “I get asked that question a lot. I hope it’s a question you are all asking each other. Because it matters. And it doesn’t have to be dependent on your last name. “I hope you all think about it.” While some questions Chealsea Clinton fielded Monday at Colerain Elementary were lighthearted, others were more serious.

Brody Allen, the Colerain Township 2-year-old who has been battling brain cancer, died Friday morning in his mother’s arms while surrounded by family. “It is with the deepest sadness I want tell you that Brody has lost his fight,” Brody’s father, Todd Allen posted on the Team Brody Facebook page. “He did not suffer. He was surrounded by his family and I have no doubt many angels.” Christmas came early for Brody after doctors said he might not make it to the holidays. Family and friends put up Christmas lights and held a parade in Brody’s honor. “While our sadness is immeasurable and we will miss his smiling beautiful soul, we are also comforted in knowing that today our son has touched the face of God,” his father said. In early October, Brody’s father, Todd Allen, said Brody was on “God’s Time”

Just before daybreak, my Scout troop hiked on a gravel road leaving Camp Lachenwald (which means “laughing woods”) near Marburg, Germany. It was dark in the dense woods. We were sleepy-eyed. All that changed as we stepped out of the forest and into a meadow bathed in the morning’s first light. As light fog dissipated, rabbits skittered among the wildflowers. While far from a regular hiker, I’ve had a number of other memorable scenes and experiences in the outdoors. A hike up the trail to Bee Rock’s sweeping overlook of Kentucky’s Rockcastle River. The satisfaction of warming to a crackling fire inside a log cabin, exhausted but exhilarated after traipsing through Big South Fork national forest for the best views of fall foliage. A few weeks ago I reached out in Facebook neighborhood groups, asking: “Where are the best places to hike in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky? For a possible fall hiking story!” Almost 100 of you responded with recommendations of over 20 regional trails to take your family hiking. Some offered extra tips:

Rescue saves corgi that may have been in dog fighting ring Ken Brown FOX19

CINCINNATI – HART Cincinnati drove more than an hour into Kentucky on Wednesday, Oct. 17 to save a 4-year-old Corgi from being put down. The dog is believed to have been part of a dog fighting ring in southern Kentucky. “Bait dogs are used by dog-fighting rings to get their dogs ready to fight and it’s common for them to spray paint their dogs different colors so that they can keep track of them,” HART Volunteer Katie Goodpaster said. “They don’t name their dogs, they don’t care.” Rescuers added the Corgi may have had to compete himself, as some dog fighting rings paint the dogs and gamblers will bet on which color dog they believe will survive. Those who fight the dogs will turn injured dogs loose instead of paying to have their wounds properly treated. “This is what can happen if you post your dog for free on Craigslist, on Facebook or any other social media forum. You don’t know where the dog is going,” Goodpaster said. HART has named the dog Barney because of his purple posterior. The spray-

painted fur is minor compared to the Corgi’s puncture wounds from where another dog bit him. Vets say he will be on antibiotics for at least a couple of weeks until his wounds heal. “It was sickening! I was very disheartened, I was mad. This poor sweet dog,” Goodpaster said. “He has two puncture wounds on the outside of his leg, one on the inside and his manhood has been damaged as well … has an infection.” Barney needs to get through treatment, which will take about a month, before he’s available for adoption. Winton Woods City School District is asking voters for a 9.81-mill substitute levy. A substitute levy is one used by Ohio school districts because it does not raise taxes for residents. Similar to a continuation, the Winton Woods substitute levy is a substitute for the emergency levy approved by voters in 2009. The substitute levy is a continuing

Deported to slavery? US sends Forest Park man back to Mauritania Mark Curnutte Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

A Forest Park man who had built a life with his American wife and two American children and worked legally for 14 years was deported Tuesday, Oct. 16 to Mauritania, a country that denies him citizenship. Issa Sao, 37, who’d been in federal immigration detention since May, was flown Tuesday on a charter flight to his native Mauritania. The northwest Afri-

can nation was the last in the world to abolish slavery, which U.S. government officials believe persists. The CIA estimates up to 20 percent of Mauritanians live in slavery; most of those enslaved are Afro-Mauritanians like Sao, who lack legal status as citizens. “Issa is in Mauritania,” said Lynn Tramonte, an advocate for Sao and his family and director of Ohio Immigrant Alliance. Tramonte said Sao and other Mauritanians were flown on a charter flight by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Spokesman Khaalid Walls in ICE’s Detroit regional office said such flights are consistent with “agency protocols, which focus on the safety and secuty of detainees.” He was flown to Nouakchott-Oum-

tounsy International Airport near the Mauritanian capital, Tramonte said. Sao’s asylum application was denied in 2004 by an immigration judge. The U.S. Board of Immigration Appeals then denied his appeal in 2009. A final order of deportation was issued, though Sao continued to keep his check-in appointments in Columbus and was granted work permits. In denying his application and appeal, the government said Sao’s testimony and documents revealed inconsistencies in his story. ICE’s Walls wrote in an email to The Enquirer: “Over more than a decade, Mr. Sao’s immigration case underwent exhaustive judicial review at multiple levels of the nation’s courts. … In each review, the courts uniformly held that Mr. Sao did not have a legal basis to remain in the U.S. As such, Mr. Sao was removed to his home country pursuant to his final order of removal.” In Mauritania, many Afro-Mauritanians are members of a slave caste who have been enslaved for generations by the lighter-skinned Arab Maghreb ruling class, according to the U.S. Department of State and Central Intelligence Agency. Although Mauritania abolished slavery in 1981, U.S. officials say the nation’s anti-slavery laws are poorly enforced. The CIA reports that 20 percent of Mauritanians, Black Moors, are enslaved, the highest rate in the world. “Right now, I think they will kill us all,” Sao told The Enquirer in a phone call from an ICE detention center in Louisiana on Thursday afternoon. “I will be killed. That’s all I can say. I will be tortured and killed. That is what they do to us.” Sao, at the time of his arrest, had a legal work permit and was employed fulltime by a pharmaceutical company. He paid taxes and moonlighted as an Uber driver to support his American family. The U.S. deported 79 Afro-Maurita-

Issa Sao with his American-born wife, Eboni, and their two U.S.-citizen children. He was deported Tuesday to Mauritania, a country known for high levels of human trafficking and enslaving members of its Afro-Mauritanian minority population. PROVIDED

nians in 2017 and is on pace to deport 50 more this year, advocacy groups say. USA Today reports that 22 Mauritanians are in ICE custody and awaiting deportation. Ohio has the largest numbers of AfroMauritanians and Mauritanian-Americans in the United States, say their advocates, citing numbers provided by community leaders and mosques. The number in the Cincinnati area is between 3,000 and 4,000, and about 2,000 to 3,000 in Columbus, said Ibrahima Sow, of Columbus, the son of a Mauritanian immigrant and member of the Ohio New African Immigrants Commission, created by the General Assembly in 2009. Census estimates are not available on country of origins from many African nations.

MEDICARE PLAN DIDN’T BECOME SUCCESSFUL BY CHARGING YOU LESS.

WE DID.

Big-ticket Medicare Advantage plans have a formula for success: charge as much as possible and give as little as possible. Yet people still flock to their plans because many of them think bigger is better. Then they end up paying thousands in premiums, deductibles and copays and may not even get vision, dental and hearing coverage. MeridianCare Plans (HMO) have $0 premiums, $0 deductibles and $0 copays. They include more vision, dental and hearing coverage, plus a gym membership, Viagra, Levitra and a great deal more. And if it makes you feel better, MeridianCare is part of the Meridian family of companies that has over one million members. The difference is, we didn’t become successful by charging you more. We became successful by charging you $0 and giving you more.

Eat well, eat salmon during breast cancer month Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld

Funny how some things pop into one’s mind. Like today, when I was sorting gourds and pumpkins that the little ones helped pick. I was thinking about October being breast cancer awareness month and how important it is to eat well, especially with a diagnosis of breast cancer. So I want to share one of my favorite recipes for salmon. This recipe is filled with omega 3s and protein. Add a side of asparagus or marinated lentils (check out my abouteating.com

Tips from readers’ kitchens Simple baked chicken. Jim I. said instead of using butter he just sprays the chicken with butter flavored Pam. “Cuts calories. Tastes the same”, he said. Pumpkin granola. Kenton Recorder reader Rose F. added dried apricots and sunflower seeds. “Great as a snack”, she told me.

Can you help? “Real mac & cheese.” Peggy, an Eastside reader, wants a recipe for good mac & cheese. “No Velveeta”, she said. I know there’s one somewhere in our Community Press kitchens. Could it be yours?

site) and you have a delicious, energy giving meal. And while I was sorting the gourds, I found a couple miniature pumpkins. They reminded me of a cheese ball recipe that I like so much. It’s a bit on the spicy side, and that’s what makes guests come back for more. Maybe you’d like to make the cheese ball in the shape of a pumpkin for Halloween. Or an apple. Or just packed into a crock. You get the idea. Rita Nader Heikenfeld is an herbalist, educator and author. Find her blog online at Abouteating.com. Email her at rita@com munitypress.com with “Rita’s kitchen” in the subject line.

Simple sautéed salmon Let salmon sit out a bit prior to cooking, and it should cook through pretty evenly. The secret is to let salmon cook halfway up/ through and then turn. Viewpoints Spooked by Halloween sales? Don’t be haunted by a poor decision Sandra Guile Guest Columnist Community Press

Shopping for Halloween should be fun, not terrifying. With so many costume and decoration ideas, it’s hard to choose what to buy, and where to buy it from. According to the National Retail Federation, Halloween spending for 2018 is expected to reach $9 billion, with consumers planning to spend an average of $86.79 each. According to the survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics, among Halloween celebrants, 70 percent plan to pass out candy, 50 percent will decorate their home or yard, 48 percent will wear costumes, 30 percent will take their children trick-or-treating and 18 percent will dress their pets in costumes. When it comes to purchasing costumes and other Halloween supplies, 45 percent of shoppers will visit discount stores, 35 percent will visit a Halloween store and 24 percent will shop online.

Avoid being spooked with these tips Look around your home check what items you have in your home. You may find an old costume you can re-purpose or Halloween

decorations you can put out. Doing this will not only help you save money, but you won’t end up with more than you need. Rent a costume. Some people don’t like the idea of spending a lot of money on a costume that will only be worn once. While renting a costume leaves more room in your budget, know that the costume you may be getting may not be in great shape. If you opt for renting a costume this year, check out the condition of the costume first. Make sure you try it on and note any defects with the owner. Read over the rental agreement carefully and make sure you make note of the rental period. Look for sales, compare prices on Halloween costumes and decorations from various retail or online stores. Along with comparing prices, look for coupons and sign up for email alerts. This will help you get the best deals, saving you a nice chunk of change. Always check the return policy whether you are shopping in a store or online, always make sure you are clear on the store’s return policy before you buy. Find out how long you must keep your receipt, or what happens if you should lose your receipt. This will help you avoid any mishaps like unwanted items being non-refundable. Remember: Buying a bunch of stuff with the intent of simply returning it after Oct. 31 is considered fraud. Seasonal stores. If you decide to shop from a seasonal store, ask whether they will

be open after the holiday, how long they plan to stay open, and if they will accept returns after Halloween is over. If they plan to close shop Nov. 1, or refuse returns after, either consider shopping elsewhere or take more time to be sure that item is exactly what you want before making the purchase. Before going to the store, itself, see if they have a website just in case you must contact them later and as you’re shopping, carefully read the signage to make sure that you understand what items final sale or clearance are. When you do make a purchase, use a credit card and save all your receipts. Attending a special event or visiting a haunted house? Before you purchase tickets, research the business and make sure that there are no complaints about the company hosting the event. Check out the company at bbb.org. Read what previous customers have to say and see how the business responds to complaints. Check BBB Scam Tracker and see if other consumers have filed a report about the event host. Sports Lavelle’s early goal lifts USWNT past Canada Dave Clark Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

Former Cincinnati United Premier and Mount Notre Dame High School standout Rose Lavelle recently scored a goal two minutes into the championship match of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying tournament - and Alex Morgan added an insurance goal in the 61st minute in a 2-0 U.S. Women’s National Team win against rival Canada. The 23-year-old Lavelle’s goal was the sixth of her career, and her third of the tournament. She scored back-toback goals in the first half of USWNT’s 7-0 win against Trinidad and Tobago in World Cup qualifying. Both the U.S. and Canada had already secured spots in next year’s World Cup in France. The U.S. won the title without conceding a single goal and im-

proved to 16-0-2 so far in 2018. In August, Lavelle scored the first of USWNT’s four goals in a 4-1 victory against Brazil in a Tournament of Nations win. In February, Lavelle was named an athlete ambassador for KT Tapethrough 2020. Lavelle was the top pick in the NWSL Dispersal Draft after her team, the Boston Breakers, ceased operations. Sky Blue FC traded the pick before the draft to the Washington Spirit, which drafted Lavelle. Lavelle’s excitement over USWNT’s Cincinnati visit last year was apparent after she played in her hometown for the first time since high school, in a 5-0 friendly win against New Zealand. In June of 2017, Lavelle scored the only goal in USWNT’s 1-0 exhibition win against Sweden.

Local boxers headed to national championships Jason Hoffman Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

Several local boxers are looking to follow in the footsteps of other fighters from the Queen City who represented their country on the world’s stage. The Real Deal Boxing Club in Mt. Healthy is sending Jalmarionn Forte, 14, 110lb, Intermediate Division, and Lavars Carter, 18, 152lb Elite Division, to the USA Boxing Elite and Youth Championships Dec. 2-9 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Carter and Jalmarionn will join their teammates, Adrian Benton and Antwan

Coach, who previously qualified for the nationals, in fighting for a chance to represent Team USA at the World Championships. The pair were winners in their respective qualifying tournaments and had teammates that also recorded topthree finishes: Breishaun Johnson, 12, 85 lbs, intermediate division bronze; Darius Ward, 14, 132lbs, junior division bronze; Tory Coleman Jr. 15, 119lbs, junior division silver. Earlier this year, Real Deal became the first club ever to advance three boxers to the finals of the National Golden Gloves. Benton, who also won the Golden Boy

Award, has trained at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Duke Ragan, who fights out of Cincinnati Gold Gloves, will also be competing at the national tournament. He is the top-ranked bantamweight (123 lbs.) fighter in the Elite Division, according to USA Boxing. The national tournament kicks off the qualification process for Olympic hopefuls looking to make the journey to Tokyo in 2020. You can watch the fights on USA Boxing’s YouTube channel streaming Dec. 2-9.

Virginia Tech.” His tough Greater Catholic LeagueSouth upbringing has helped him overcome the odds of recovering from injury and then waiting his turn for his moment. A pinned Tweet on his account refers to David and Goliath. Glines has jumped from 195 in high school to 220, but there are tall, thick trees on Division I defenses. “My Mom is always sending me inspirational texts and bible verses,” Glines said. “I like to think I’m pretty rooted in my faith. In my sophomore year or my redshirt year where I wasn’t really touching the ball as much as I wanted, it’s important to keep myself grounded and keep that in mind. Things like that are definitely good to keep me motivated and stick to the daily grind.” Glines has seen his patience be rewarded as Coach Steve Addazio has used him as a receiver and runner, allowing him multiple touches. Likewise, at St. Xavier he had to bide his time behind C.J. Hilliard (Iowa, Ohio University) and Conor Hundley (Akron). “It was a wait-your-turn-deal,” Glines said. “A slow and steady grind and eventually your time will come. That’s how it’s been here for me, too.” In addition to gaining key yards for BC, Glines has met the legendary Doug

Flutie (the Eagles wore Flutie throwback uniforms in their win over Louisville). He follows Madeira’s Andrew Benintendi with the Red Sox but is still holding out hope his hometown Reds can someday revisit the post season. In the meantime, Glines has been with Boston College to the Quick Lane Bowl at Detroit’s Ford Field in 2016 where they beat Maryland. In 2014, he took his first trip to New York City for the Pinstripe Bowl and an overtime loss to Penn State. BC’s next win makes them eligible again for a holiday gathering, one where Glines is likely to see significant time. “We have a huge opportunity in front of us to do something special and get a really good bowl game,” Glines said. “This is my last undergraduate semester. I will start my graduate career as my fifth-year season after this season is over.” Glines has a younger brother on St. Xavier (Sam) and planned on attending the Bombers game with St. Ignatius. The Long Blue Line never ends. “I’m always updated on St. X,” Glines said. “Friday nights in the hotel, I’m watching their games on my laptop. I always shoot Coach Specht a text before the game. I love St. X. That’s a huge part of what’s made me who I am.”

Dillon through five games has 652 yards and an average of more than 130 per game. However, he injured his ankle against Temple and missed the next two games against North Carolina State and Louisville. Enter Ben Glines. The former Bomber racked up 120 yards against Temple, another 90 against North Carolina State and 107 more against Louisville as the Eagles are now 5-2 and hoping to gain bowl eligibility when the Miami Hurricanes come to Chestnut Hill Oct. 26. He credits his resiliency to St. Xavier High School. “Going against tough competition (at St. X) was really good preparation for these ACC games,” Glines said. “Whether you’re at the top of the ACC or the bottom, those games are going to be a battle.” He has experienced some of the classic venues in sport, having played Notre Dame at Fenway Park, in the Pinstripe

Q: Dr. Godbey, does untreated hearing loss have anything to do with depression? A: Yes, it does. Recent studies have shown that untreated hearing loss has serious and emotional and social consequences for older persons. The National Council on Aging found that those with untreated hearing loss were more likely to report depression, anxiety and paranoia and were less likely to participate in organized social activities, compared to those who wear hearing aids. Hearing aid users reported significant improvements in many areas of their lives, ranging from relationships at home and a sense of independence in their social life. Advances in technology have dramatically improved hearing aids in recent years. We now have smaller options, rechargeable options, and even hearing aids that connect to cell phones via Bluetooth.
