Colerain Township tests chicanes to slow drivers down: Did it work? Jennie Key Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

When traffic gets heavy on Springdale Road in Colerain Township, drivers turn onto Loralinda Drive, sometimes zooming past a day care and dozens of family homes. Kids play in the yards of those homes, and residents have complained that drivers don't respect the posted 25 mph speed limit. Colerain Township Administrator Geoff Milz said concerns about scofflaw motorists and safety for Loralinda residents led to a unique possible solution: A 30-day trial of a chicane, which adds curves to straightaways and acts as a deterrent for speeders.

A sign for an award for up to $5,000 was posted after a "firebomb" was thrown into a Springdale home on Oct. 21, police said.

While many communities have embraced speed humps, Milz said there were concerns. Speed humps have drawbacks: increased noise, difficulties clearing snow from roads and potential interference with police and fire vehicles responding to cars. Milz said the chicanes came down last week, and township officials are poring over the data now that was measured electronically while the traffic-calming devices were in place. What they are looking for is simple: Did chicanes slow drivers down? The township gathered data before and after the chicanes were installed. The first week of data following the

Colerain Township plans to test the use of chicanes to slow down motorists on Loralinda Drive.

Springdale investigators are looking for help finding a suspect in the Oct. 21 firebombing of an 89-year-old woman's home. Tom Lindsey, chief fire inspector for the city, said the firebomb was a glass bottle filled with gasoline with a cloth wick. The wick was lit and the bottle was thrown through a window of the home at 504 Grandin Ave. at 5:15 p.m., causing an explosion in the living room. The call came in at 5:19 p.m. The homeowner's 66-year-old son put out the fire initially, and firefighters extinguished the fire again when it rekindled. No one was injured. Lindsey said the person responsible for the firebombing is described as a white male in his 40s to 50s. He has a slender build and is 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall. At the time of the attack he was not clean shaven, the investigator said. He fled the scene in an early-model silver Dodge Dakota pickup truck with a standard cab estimated to be mid to late 1980s to early 1990s model year.

Springdale officers reported the attack occurred around 5:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Grandin Avenue and the suspect remains at large.

Springdale company pays tribute to ‘WKRP in Cincinnati’ with new ad Chris Pugh Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

A new local advertising campaign covered the classic television theme song which is iconic to Cincinnati residents. Cincinnati-based Teasdale Fenton Carpet Cleaning & Restoration covered the song in a new jingle, which aired on the radio and debuted on TV ads last week. "(My husband and company coowner) Jim was at a conference and met someone who sang the jingle from 'WKRP in Cincinnati' when learning Jim was from Cincinnati," Teasdale Fenton co-owner Leah Olmstead said in an email. "They talked about what a great commercial that could make." Leah said the most memorable "WKRP in Cincinnati" episode for her was "Thanksgiving Turkey Drop." "We hope that Cincinnati has fun singing to the jingle and the nostalgia it brings," she said. The ad was made by Holland Advertising of Cincinnati. “At the outset of our relationship

He said the township is still gathering data at the site where the hay and traffic cone curves were installed to see if there is a residual effect. "I don't see the use of chicanes being widespread in the township," Milz said. "The road needs to be wide enough to accommodate them. We are evaluating their effectiveness, the cost and how the public feels about them. Milz said the township needs to be innovative and trying something different – chicanes for example – could lead to costeffective solutions to issues that mean something to residents. Some residents didn't care for the chicane. Resident James Howell said he wouldn't vote for a politician who supported the chicanes. "I have no problem

with speed bumps, but if I wanted to drive a Formula One race track, I’d just build one in my backyard," he said in a post on A Greater Northbrook's Facebook page. Lori McMullen, a board member with A Greater Northbrook community group, said she tried driving through the chicane when it was up. "I had to slow down to around 15 mph to maneuver them," she said. "There was a car waiting for me to clear the chicane on the other side. We all know we have to do something to slow drivers down. This may work in some areas better than others, but we won’t know until we try." "Also, keep in mind this is a temporary construction," she said. "A permanent structure … will be prettier." Lora Dakin, who founded A Greater Northbrook, said the township was responsive to an issue the community said was important and she hopes the chicane returns once the data is analyzed. "We were pleased the township listened and was willing to try something to address the complaints of speeding in the neighborhoods," she said. "I think anything that helps drivers pay attention is going to help."

Server crash cuts off 20 police departments from records Jennie Key Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

About 20 local law enforcement agencies can't generate or access their electronic police records and haven't been able to get to them for almost two weeks. Greenhills Police Chief Neil Ferdelman said the servers for Pamet software, owned by Securus were hit by what he called a power glitch that took the main server and its backup server offline Oct. 27. He said while the Carrollton, Texas, company initially said it would be back online in an hour or so, the issue was more difficult to manage than initially thought, and Securus had to send the servers off to have data recovered. "My understanding is that is still going on," Ferdelman said. "We have been assured that the company expects to recover all the data and we hope the servers will be back up by Saturday," he said. Area departments that use the system include Addyston, Amberley, Blue Ash, Cheviot, Cleves, Colerain Township, Fairfax, Glendale, Green Township, Greenhills, Hamilton County Park Rangers, Lockland, Mason, Mount Healthy, North College Hill, Sharonville, Springdale, Springfield Township, St. Bernard, the Warren County Drug Task Force, Woodlawn and Wyoming. Cincinnati and the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office are not using the system. Not all are affected by the crash, as some, like Blue Ash, Amberley and Springdale, have their own servers. Ferdelman said his officers are back to filing reports the old fashioned way: paper and pen. In Green Township, Lt. Mitch Hill said the server failure has put the paper back in paperwork: all reports and details are now being recorded by hand. He said the Hamilton County Prosecutor's Office also uses the system for data it needs for

cases. "We are back to faxing," he said. Colerain Township Police Sgt. Ed Cordie said all calls for service are entered into the system. Since the crash, they are being handwritten and all those handwritten records will have to be entered manually once the servers are back online. Ferdelman and Hill both said the server crash has been more of a headache than anything else. Both said cases in court are still being prosecuted, and reports are being recorded. When the servers are repaired, both said all of the paperwork generated since Oct. 27 will be entered into the system. "It's a shame," Ferdelman said. "Because the Pamet system has worked well for us. I think we thought, and they thought redundancies were built in. They weren't. I feel confident they will be when the servers are restored." Springfield Police Chief Rob Browder said his department has used the system since 2006, but his confidence in its reliability is shaken by a two-week outage. "I have people coming in for accident reports for insurance for crashes that happened before the server went down and we can't help them. They are having trouble getting their cars fixed. It's not good." He said a number of the department are considering a meeting with a vendor for another system. "I understand a server going down for a couple hours. Even a day," he said. "Two weeks? That's just unacceptable." Securus issued a statement when called by The Enquirer. "Pamet, an Archonix company, understands the urgency and delicacy of the situation and have been in constant communication with all affected parties," it said. "We are prepared to restore access to our systems within the next 48 hours while we continue to work tirelessly with our technology experts to recover all data."

A sewer project on Werk Road will tie up traffic through spring. Construction will generally happen between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Some weekend work may be necessary. Access to local traffic will be maintained but could be delayed at times. Oven mac & cheese, many different ways Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld

A few weeks ago I asked for macaroni & cheese recipes that don’t use Velveeta for Peggy, an Eastgate reader. I thought maybe I’d get a few recipes for Peggy. Not! I got a lot of really yummy tasting recipes, some heirloom, some ultra healthy, some in between. I won’t have room to share all here, but will share them on my site. Here’s one I know Peggy, and you, will like. With all the “busyness” that preparing for Thanksgiving brings, this would be a satisfying meal any day of the week. Or as a side for the holiday feast.

This decadent mac and cheese uses queso and cream cheese as a base as opposed to Velveeta or a roux.

Oven baked mac & cheese Kathryn Blackburn’s recipe from a friend is so easy. “I have taken it several places and everyone loved it,” she said. The recipe starts with uncooked macaroni, cheese, etc. cooked in the oven from start to finish.

RITA HEIKENFELD FOR THE COMMUNITY PRESS

Church cookbook mac & cheese

Andrea’s restaurant-worthy mac & cheese

Mary Heeney’s recipe is a small batch recipe. “From our church cookbook,” she told me.

Andrea Cruikshank is one of my editors, and she was the first to share a recipe. Andrea said “I came up with it myself while trying to replicate Eagle’s mac & cheese. Not exactly like theirs, but so good. No Velveeta, no roux. I have tried recipe after recipe for mac & cheese that uses a roux and the flour flavor is always so prevalent. This eliminates that process but is still a Velveeta-free option!”

Ellie Krieger’s mac & cheese Reader Judy Mattingly likes this one a lot. This recipe has the kick of cayenne and dry mustard.

Boone County Extension Mac & Cheese surprise Cathy Fellows works at the Extension office and teaches free nutrition classes for adults. She shared a recipe from University of Ky. dieticians that “sneaks in squash and oddly very little cheese.” As Cathy said, it’s a good way to get kids, including her daughter, to eat veggies. Rita Nader Heikenfeld is an herbalist, educator and author. Find her blog online at Abouteating.com. Email her at rita@com munitypress.com with “Rita’s kitchen” in the subject line.

If you want a decadent, creamy mac & cheese, today is your lucky day. Ingredients 1 pound cavatappi pasta (any short pasta)

Instructions

1 regular sized jar white Queso dip

Boil the pasta al dente. Drain.

8 oz. smoked Gouda

Shred cheeses into bowl.

8 oz. sharp white cheddar plus more to sprinkle on top, if desired (I didn’t need any more on top)

In medium-large pot, combine butter, cream cheese, Queso dip, sour cream, heavy cream and Chardonnay, and stir constantly to melt cream cheese and butter over medium heat. Once melted, continue to stir and cook a bit longer to cook alcohol out of wine.

8 oz. cream cheese Dollop or 2 of sour cream (I used 2 tablespoons) ⁄2 (4 tablespoons) butter

1 1

Add cheeses and stir constantly over heat until completely melted.

Splash or two of Chardonnay (a cheap unoaked variety will do)

Add pasta and coat thoroughly. Pour into 9x13 dish, including every last bit of sauce.

⁄2to 1 cup heavy/whipping cream (to desired consistency)

Panko breadcrumbs, if desired, to taste (I sprinkled a nice amount on top)

Top with breadcrumbs and extra cheese if desired and broil a few minutes until cheese melts and crumbs are golden.

Viewpoints Protect personal information during Medicare enrollment time Sandra Guile Guest Columnist Community Press

Senior citizens preparing to file for Medicare for the first time or those who need to make changes to their current coverage should be aware that scammers are using a false connection to Medicare to commit medical identity theft. Medical identity theft is different than regular identity theft in that someone uses stolen personal information to obtain medical care, buy prescription drugs, or submit fake billings in your name instead of setting up false credit cards or withdrawing cash. While there are several scams related to medical care, Medicaid or Medicare beneficiaries should be alert to a few common tactics criminals use when conducting a Medicare scam. One frequent method that fraudsters use is to pose as employees from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) or some other false agency with a similar-sounding name. They’ll typically claim Medicare card holders are being issued new cards and they need to replace their current cards. The scammer states that to receive the new card, the recipient

must verify or update sensitive information - including their Medicare number which is associated with a Social Security number. Medicare officials have stated they don’t contact patients and ask for personal information like their Medicare or Social Security number via phone or email. Another strategy scammers employ is to go door to door acting as an official Medicare agent. The person approaches a senior citizen and pretends as though they are selling Medicare insurance. They claim to be able to save the senior thousands of dollars on health care costs but says that the offer they are proposing is only good during Medicare’s open enrollment period. Any mention of an early bird discount or limited time offer indicates a high-pressure sales pitch and should raise a red flag, especially if they’re pushing to obtain personal information. Unsolicited, unexpected phone calls are one more way scammers use to try and obtain seniors’ Medicare information. These calls are usually characterized by an insistent sales pitch for medical services or prescription drug coverage. If the sales pitch is denied, the caller claims that because the person did not take advantage of the deal, their Medicare benefits will be terminated. Medicare services like prescription drug

coverage are supplemental to Medicare benefits and are a voluntary service, meaning that it’s not necessary to sign up or renew them to continue receiving benefits. Sports Local players leading the way for UK football James Weber Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

Several Greater Cincinnati players are making key contributions to the University of Kentucky’s football team this season. Here is a glance:

John Schlarman, assistant coach The Highlands graduate and former football standout there and UK is currently battling cancer and has been someone the Wildcats have rallied around. Schlarman was head coach at Campbell County and Newport, leading Newport to an 11-5 record in 2005.

George Asafo-Adjei, Lakota West

In 2017, Miyan Williams ran for 1,403 yards and 16 TDs on 205 carries. This season, he's carried the ball less, doubled his touchdown rate and produced 1,000 yards more on the ground. ALEX VEHR/FOR THE ENQUIRER

Winton Woods has someone ‘special’ in Miyan Williams Charlie Hatch Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

Miyan Williams doesn’t surprise Andre Parker anymore. The amount of yards and touchdowns Williams amasses are surprising, but not the Winton Woods running back’s potential. “I’ve known from the moment I met Miyan, he’s truly special,” Parker, his head coach said Wednesday after practice. “I’m biased, but yeah, he’s the best in the area,” Parker said. The running back is a 5-foot-10, 210pound force who is speedy along the edge and can burst between the tackles. He current has offers from the University of Cincinnati, Kentucky, Maryland, Rutgers and Toledo. In terms of his size, he’s always been a dominant force. But, when Williams was a freshman, his coach wondered if he was strong enough mentally. Eventually, he started five games into the season. In his second start, he pounded through the Elder defense for

149 yards and a touchdown in a Winton Woods win at The Pit. That surprised Parker. “I just do what I do when I get the ball,” Williams said. But what’s most impressive about his current 2018 output is how efficient he’s become so quickly. In 2017, he ran for 1,403 yards and 16 touchdowns on 205 carries. This season, he’s carried the ball less, doubled his touchdown rate and produced 1,000 yards more on the ground. “As you get older and the more you play, the game tends to slow down,” Parker said. “That’s what’s happening for Miyan. He’s able to play at a faster speed but he’s able to slow the computer down.” He’s also the recipient of great downfield block, Parker said. The coach praised his perimeter players – Raequan Prince, Rashaun Brown, Demeer Blankumsee and Bryant Johnson Jr. – for their downfield blocking, which in return extended runs into explosive plays and touchdowns. Williams had a 98-yard run earlier this season and an 88-yard one in the 49-42 win over

Lewis Center Olentangy. “If we ever watch game film, it’s amazing,” Parker said. “Sometimes they’ll sprint 20 yards to catch a kid to get in front of him and block so they won’t catch (Williams). That part of it is probably the biggest difference.” But Williams is just as selfless, too. He never complains about his carry count or use in a game, high or low. Parker said the running back will sacrifice his body to make a block. He drives teammates to school and practice. Williams even pointed out his humbleness as something he’s proud of. In the offseason, the back and coach talked about expectations in 2018. The Warriors played in the state championship game last season, but lost seniors to graduation. In short, Williams needed to provide more. “I basically said, ‘Out of the whole pizza, you have got two slices,’ “ Parker recalled. “ ‘You might have to eat threequarters of the pizza this year and gotta be ready for that.’ “ Williams’ response: “Whatever you need me to do.”

The senior offensive tackle has been a key part of the line for three years, blocking for top running back Benny Snell, one of the best in the country. He was a four-star prospect out of Lakota West and ranked second among offensive guards in Ohio, and first team all-state as a senior. He was named Southeastern Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week after the Vanderbilt win. Asafo-Adjei, a 6-foot-5, 315-pound tackle from West Chester, Ohio, helped the Wildcats power their way to 195 yards and three touchdowns rushing. Affectionately known as "Big George," the senior graded at 89 percent with three knockdown blocks and 23 blocks at the point of attack as the Cats rushed for 280 yards. The senior played every offensive snap without an assignment error, did not have a penalty and did not allow any sacks or quarterback pressures. See UK FOOTBALL, Page 2B

True freshman George Asafo-Adjei is already one of UK’s biggest, strongest players. He could start as at right tackle. CHET WHITE,/UK ATHLETICS

Wyoming senior runner Riley Bahr is LaRosa’s MVP One of Cincinnati’s top Div. II runners is Wyoming senior Riley Bahr, a four-year starter in cross country and track. In cross country, Riley so far this season has the CHL’s top time in cross country (19:46). She helped lead her Lady Cowboy squad to last season’s CHL and SWO District Div. II championships. She won the individual CHL title for the second time in 19:06.00 and won

the SWO District title in 19:22.37. Riley three times has been named CHL Cross Country Runner of the Year and first team allconference. She was also Bahr named first team all-city (Enquirer) for the second time. Last spring in track & field, Riley was the CHL champ in the 3200 run in

11:48.11, helping her team to a league runner-up finish. She was also a member of the 4x800 relay team that won the CHL championship in 10:06.34. She repeated those titles in the SWO District championships and was named first team allCHL and first team all-city. A super student (4.4 GPA), Riley will run at the next level, but has not yet selected a college. Her favorite athlete is Cory McGee, favorite entertainer is

Frank Ocean, favorite book is How Bad Do You Want it? favorite movie is Coco and most-like-to-meet is Rachel McArthur. “Riley’s an outstanding athlete, captain, and person. Everyone around her benefits seeing the example she sets at practice, in meets, and in life outside competition.” – Jim Frondorf, Cross Country Coach William Mefford, MPR Marketing

UK Football Continued from Page 1B

He has been a game captain a couple of times this season. This season the Wildcats' running game is averaging a 223.5 yards per game, good for third in the Southeastern Conference and 26th nationally midway through October. Snell continues to rewrite the record book and now sits third on UK's all-time rushing list with 3,123 yards. This season, he has rushed for 699 yards and eight touchdowns in six games for a 117.5 yards-per-game average (ninth nationally). The Cats have twice had two 100-yard rushers in a single game, just one of just seven schools to accomplish that this season.

Brenden Bates, Moeller The freshman tight end has played one game this season and has one kickoff return. He is a part of a key group of tight ends. Stoops: “Well, they are big guys. They are big guys and they can run. They are the type of guys we are looking for because they are good lineof-scrimmage tight ends. You know, they can put their hand in the dirt. They can get off and use them as the wide-off or fullback as well, but it's important to have those point of attack guys and that's what all of them are. That's the good part is we have four tight ends who can put their hand down and be physical and also stretch the field and give them a big target.” Bates was a top-20 tight end recruit in last year’s class, and two time firstteam All-GCL.

Mike Edwards, Winton Woods The senior safety is one of the Wildcats’ top defensive players and was first team All-SEC last season. He has 39 career starts for the Wildcats. He has 46 tackles this season, 33 solo, including 6.5 tackles for loss. He has an intercep-

tion this year and a fumble recovery, which ended Vanderbilt’s last scoring opportunity Oct. 20. Edwards had nine tackles against Vandy, and also nine against Texas A&M, seven solo. Stoops on Oct. 15: “ Mike Edwards plays so hard, he's so knowledgeable, he's seeing so many things, he's so instinctual. The corners are covering well but they're playing good as a group and the inside backers have played well.”

Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Kellen Mond, left, is sacked by Kentucky Wildcats linebacker Chris Oats during the second quarter at Kyle Field on Oct. 6. JOHN GLASER/USA TODAY SPORTS

Patrick Henschen, Newport Central Catholic The sophomore is listed as a tight end for the Wildcats, and has not seen any game time in his career. He was a standout quarterback for the Thoroughbreds.

Jackson High, Ryle The sophomore linebacker has practiced with the team the last two seasons but has not seen any game time. He was three-year letterwinner and second team all-state for the Raiders.

Zach Johnson, Colerain The junior running back has played eight games this season, seeing most of his action on special teams, where he has eight tackles.

Senior safiety Mike Edwards s one of the Wildcats’ top defensive players. He has 39 career starts for the Wildcats. He has 46 tackles this season, 33 solo, including 6.5 tackles for loss. MIKE WEAVER/COURIER-JOURNAL

Stoops heaped praise on him after the win over South Carolina: “He does a great job. He's a very good football player. He's down there; he'll do anything. Of course we get him ready to always play running back as well, but he jumps in there at scout team, busts his tail all day, every day on scout team, goes and plays special teams, just team player. Does whatever you ask him to do.” Johnson also played special teams last season and returned two kickoffs. He was first team All-GMC for the Cardinals as a senior.

Alex King, Mason The redshirt freshman linebacker has played in five games this season including UK’s last two. He was recruited at Mason as a three-star prospect and the No. 2 defensive end in all of Ohio. He was three-time first-team All-GMC

Chris Oats, Winton Woods The true freshman is a backup linebacker. He has 11 tackles, six solo, including one sack. Twice this year he has tallied four tackles. UK coach Bob Stoops said on Oct. 29 that he would like

Brett Slusher, Beechwood The junior receiver practiced with the team in 2016 and 2017 and has enjoyed his first live game action this season, playing five games including against Vanderbilt Oct. 20. He graduated as Beechwood’s all-time leading receiver, catching 59 balls for 1,150 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2015, leading Beechwood to the state final. He also had 115 tackles and was first team all-state.

Quintin Wilson, Turpin The freshman center has not seen game action this season. He was a top-10 center in the nation last season and first team all-state. Wilson played three seasons at Walnut Hills before transferring to the Spartans for his senior year.

Nominate Adopt A Book for a chance at $10k worth of children’s books To celebrate the Toys for Tots Literacy Program 10th anniversary, the UPS Store is giving away $10,000 worth of books and educational resources to ten organizations who serve underprivileged children across the country. Adopt A Book is asking community members to nominate them, in hopes they are one of the organizations awarded with the $10,000 in books, to distribute throughout Greater Cincinnati. Adopt A Book serves to foster literacy and a love of reading by distributing new and gently used books to disadvantaged children. To date, over 136,780 books have been distributed to children, schools, food pantries homeless shelters and other nonprofit agencies, in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. “The need in the community is great and exceeds the number of donations we are collecting,” said Angela Laman, president of Adopt A Book.“A donation of books from the Toys for Tot Literacy Program would help us meet the need in establishing more personal libraries for those in our community,” said Hannah Laman, co-founder of Adopt A Book. Community member are asked to describe in 300 words or less how the organization you’re nominating can help the UPS Store and Marine Toys for Tots Foundation meet its mission to provide books to economically disadvantaged children. Nominations came be made now through Saturday, Dec. 15 at this link: https://www.theupsstore.com/ bookgiveaway A judging panel will select winners from the nominations, using the following criteria: organization

serves disadvantaged children (40 percent); clearly defines the mission and impact of the organization (30 percent); compelling description for need/usage of books and educational resources for children (30 percent).

NOTICE SEEKING PUBLIC COMMENT

Adopt A Book was started by 15-year-old twins, Hannah and Alexander Laman, in 2011. The children, who love to read, were inspired to act, after they heard about children in Cincinnati who didn’t own books. Alex wants to continue to “make a difference” in providing more books to kids and Hannah “loves hearing the stories on how the books are impacting the kids that receive them.” “For a child living in poverty, if a parent has reading materials in the house and takes time to read to the child, the child’s reading proficiency and abilities will accelerate,” said retired Lt. Gen. Pete Osman, president and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. Toys for Tots Literacy Program reported that children’s illiteracy remains an issue in the United States as disparities between socioeconomic groups persist. In America, a quarter of children grow up without learning how to read and 47 percent of fourth graders from low-income families read below the basic level. Adopt A Book accepts monetary donations and new and gently used books. Books are donated a few at a time or by boxes. To donate books or to organize a book drive, contact Adopt A Book at info@adoptabookohio.org. Monetary donations can be made payable to: Adopt A Book, and mailed to: 11918 Foxgate Way, Loveland, Ohio 45140.
