WICHITA, Kan. — A California man pleaded guilty Tuesday, Nov. 13 to making a hoax call that ultimately led police to fatally shoot a Kansas man following a dispute between two online gamers over $1.50 bet in a Call of Duty WWII video game. Tyler R. Barriss, 26, admitted to making the false report resulting in a death, as well as cyberstalking and conspiracy related to the deadly swatting calls in Kansas. The deal with prosecutors will send him to prison for between 20 and 25 years, if the judge accepts it. He had previously pleaded not guilty in Kansas. See SWATTING, Page 3A

The father of Andrew "Drew" Allen said his son, critically injured after being hit by two cars, will survive his injuries. The Allen family has had a tough year. Todd and Shilo Allen's 2-year-old son Brody died of a rare and aggressive brain cancer Oct. 17. A little more than two weeks later, on Nov. 5, Andrew "Drew" Allen was struck crossing Springdale Road, a half-mile from his Colerain Township home. "Andrew is doing very well," Todd Allen said in a Facebook post to his Team Brody Facebook page on Thursday. "A little over a week ago when I saw my son for the first time after the accident, I was devastated. He was in such bad shape. When the doctors sat us down to relay his medical condition, to be honest, I heard only half of what they said." Allen said as he listened to the medical team talking about Drew's condition, he focused on one doctor in particular, who was sitting, knee bouncing nervously. "He couldn't look me in the eye," Allen said. Todd said the doctors knew what the family had been through, and how scared they were.

"At the end of the conference I asked the nervous doctor one final question. 'What comes next?' His knee stopped, he looked me dead in the eye, never breaking contact, and promised me that they were going to give him everything

they had," he said in his post. "I started out that conversation thinking I would soon bury another son. But I held on first to my faith and See ALLEN, Page 2A

Instead, they are making arrangements to get him through the remaining surgeries he needs so he can move to a rehab facility. Todd said he knows his son has a long way to go. He is still not awake. He has moments where he has opened his eyes and at times takes breaths on his own. "His heart is amazingly strong," Todd said. "His body is healing. He continues to say the family's faith is holding them up, and they are grateful for the prayers and support of the community. We feel the love and strength from your prayers." "Thank you for being there for us during Brody's fight. And thank you again for being with us now as Andrew faces an uncertain future, but a future nonetheless." Swatting Continued from Page 1A

As part of the plea agreement with federal prosecutors, Barriss pleaded guilty to a total of 51 charges that included federal charges initially filed in California and the District of Columbia related to other fake calls and threats . Defense attorney Richard Federico told the court his client is accepting responsibility and is attempting to "clear the deck" of all federal charges. Barriss, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, stood with his hands folded in front of him as he entered his pleas. "Without ever stepping foot in Wichita, the defendant created a chaotic situation that quickly turned from dangerous to deadly," U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister said in a news release. "His reasons were trivial and his disregard for the safety of other people was staggering." In the case from the District of Columbia, Barriss pleaded guilty to two counts for making hoax bomb threats in phone calls to the headquarters of the FBI and the Federal Communications Commission in Washington, D.C. In the California case, he pleaded guilty to 46 counts for making false reports that bombs were planted at high schools, universities, shopping malls, and television stations. He called from Los Angeles to emergency numbers in Ohio, New Hampshire, Nevada, Massachusetts, Illinois, Utah, Virginia, Texas, Arizona, Missouri, Maine, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, New York, Michigan, Florida and Canada. His sentencing was set for Jan. 30. Also charged as co-conspirators in the federal case in Kansas are online gamers Casey Viner, 18, of North College Hill, Ohio, and Shane Gaskill, 20, of Wichita. They have pleaded not guilty to charges including conspiracy to obstruct justice, wire fraud and other counts. Their trial is scheduled for Jan. 8 in U.S. District Court in Wichita. Viner allegedly became upset at Gaskill while playing the popular online

game. Authorities say Viner then asked Barriss of Los Angeles to "swat" Gaskill at an address that Gaskill had previously provided him. Swatting is a form of retaliation sometimes used by gamers, who call police and make a false report to send first responders to an online opponent's address. Barriss is accused of calling Wichita police from Los Angeles on Dec. 28, 2017, to report a shooting and kidnapping at a Wichita address. Authorities say Barris researched the address Viner had given him for Gaskill and verified it was a home. When Gaskill noticed Barriss was following him on Twitter, he began communicating with Barriss through direct messages in which he also gave him that same old address and dared him to swat him. "Please try some s---. I'll be waiting," Gaskill wrote in the direct messages cited in the indictment. A police officer responding to the call fatally shot the new resident Andrew Finch, 28, after he opened the door. It is unclear what will become of separate state charges. Barriss is scheduled for a separate Jan. 7 trial in Sedgwick County District Court on state charges of involuntary manslaughter, giving a false alarm and interference with a law enforcement officer.

Don’t be crabby; seafood in a bag is now a thing Polly Campbell Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

I’ve had shrimp and crawfish boils before, but not until I ate at Cincy Crab did I know that there is a whole new approach to this traditional festive way of eating seafood. Apparently, across the South and spreading to other parts of the U.S., there are restaurants that serve boiled seafood dinners in a bag. At Cincy Crab, in Springdale near TriCounty Mall, you order seafood – shrimp without heads, shrimp with heads, crawfish, oysters, mussels, crab, lobster tails, etc. – by the pound. (A pound is the minimum order.) You choose a seasoning type and heat level. The server brings your bags to the table, where you dump them into a tray and dig in. They give you plastic gloves to do the job The restaurant is in a former IHOP, done up in pine paneling on which customers are encouraged to write their name or messages in black magic marker. The tables are covered with paper tablecloths. It has the plain, simple feel of a place where you’re going to make some mess. And you will. Turns out, the seafood isn’t really cooked in the bag. It’s put in after it’s boiled, then the seasoning, in a bath of butter, is added and the bag is shaken. So there’s a lot of flavored fat your seafood is swimming around in. The crawfish was good. So were the headless shrimp, fairly big and firm. A few red potatoes and half an ear of corn also cooked up nicely. I got the lemonpepper seasoning and didn’t feel like that flavor came through particularly. My husband got “cajun” and it was a generic spiciness, which wasn’t “wow,” but good. There is tons of chopped up garlic on everything, but strangely, the

garlic flavor isn’t especially strong. And it was a lot of oil. The place was originally called Juicy Crab, but that name turned out to be taken, so they changed it. And their opening night was pretty rocky, apparently. But they seemed to be running smoothly. The service was fine and the food came quickly.

Side dishes fit for the holidays Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld

OK it’s time to get serious about the approaching holidays and the kind of food we’re going to fix for family and friends. Is it a new appetizer you need? Tuck the recipe for the goat cheese log into your “must try” folder. The cranberry cherry jello salad is for the reader who stopped to chat in the lobby of the hospital. “We had a family recipe for cranberry salad with cherry jello and dark sweet cherries. Somehow the recipe got lost and I would like to make it. It would be like a gift from Santa if you have a similar one,” she said. Well, Santa has come early for her. One more thing - I saw this saying on a plaque in a gift shop. It sums up the way we all should feel about Thanksgiving: “Thank you for the food before us, the friends and family beside us, and the love between us.” Happy Thanksgiving - you are what makes this column special! Rita Nader Heikenfeld is an herbalist, educator and author. Find her blog at Abouteating.com. Email her at rita@com munitypress.com.

Mom's cranberry cherry jello salad Ingredients 1 (6 ounce) cherry jello

1 cup walnuts, chopped

Instructions

The cranberries lend sweetness to the pungent goat cheese. The nuts, herbs and pepper add more elements of flavor.

1 (16.5 oz.) dark sweet cherries in juice 1 large or 2 small apples, diced

Ingredients

1 stalk of celery, diced small

2 oz. cream cheese

Instructions Bring water to a boil. Add jello, stirring until dissolved. Drain cherries, saving the juice. Add enough cold water to the juice to make 1 cup. Add the juice/water mixture to the hot jello and stir well. Chill until almost thickened and at this point add apples, celery, nuts, cherries and cranberry sauce. Stir well.

Mix goat, cream cheese and pepper together. Place on a square of plastic wrap and roll up, enclosing in plastic wrap as you go. Shape into a 7-8” log. This can be done a day ahead. Mix cranberries, nuts, parsley and rosemary together.

1 log, 8 oz., plain goat cheese

2 cups water

Viewpoints Childhood mental health: A crisis in the making Stephanie Beck Borden Guest Columnist Community Press

I remember holding my babies in the hours after they were born, imagining who they would become and what our family might be like. My husband had “the talk” with each of the girls within an hour of arriving earth-side about how boys would walk up to the door, knock and speak to him before picking them up. Never, in a million years, did I imagine myself in the throes of a panic for weeks as one of our beloveds struggled with a mounting mental health crisis. I had no idea that trying to secure urgently needed pediatric mental health care would test the limits of my advocacy skills and my network of resources. Through it all, I had people tell me I was over-reacting. Maybe I was reading her wrong. Perhaps it was just the ADHD and hormones so I just needed to adjust to a new dynamic. All these ways of denying the reality that my child was experiencing a mental health crisis and subtly (or not so subtly) implying that I was too sensitive for this next stage of parenting were as frustrating as, and

more cutting than, the lack of available resources. Data show that 1 in 5 children in the United States experiences a severe mental health issue, but nearly 80 percent do not receive mental health care. Just 15 percent of psychiatrists provide specialized care to children and adolescents while it was projected that the need for pediatric psychiatrists would double between 2000 and 2020. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Ohio is one of many states with a severe shortage of providers. This shortage means it takes an average of more than seven weeks to get an appointment with a psychiatrist. In the midst of a downward spiraling situation, this is an eternity. I am grateful we were eventually able to access to the tremendous resources at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and The Lindner Center. However, the number of children and families who need these providers and programs far outnumber the resources available, so the wait is doubly torturous as you watch your loved one spiral deeper out of control but not quite so dangerous that it merits a visit to the emergency room. In general, I am very careful about how I share our family’s story because it’s not just my story to tell. It involves our entire family, and they get to control how they share their

part of it. Other families are protecting the privacy of their loved ones as well and avoiding the stigma or judgment that can come from unsuspecting corners. Yet, from time to time, there are code words that parents use, and if you are paying attention and respond with a corresponding code word that indicates shared experience, a whole new conversation opens up. Finally, someone who has a clue about the terror and frustration you’ve experienced. Someone who might have a resource to share or a positive story. In many ways, the pediatric mental health crisis is a Gordian Knot of insurance reimbursement – medical school specialty training issues. I don’t see how we can individually create immediate systemic change in the current climate. What we CAN do at an individual level is be kinder to each other. Chances are good that you know a family who has felt the agony of not getting the help their child needs in a timely manner. We can support our friends, neighbors and colleagues who are concerned about their child’s mental health, We can make ourselves safe places for parents to process their experience of parenting during this type of crisis. Colerain highlights prior to Elder game Cincinnati Enquirer

Editor’s note: The Elder Panthers faced the Colerain Cardinals Friday in a Division I regional final at Mason High School - after the Community Press print deadlines. For results, photos and more, visit Cincinnati.com. Prior to Friday, Colerain and Elder last met in the 2015 postseason. The

Cardinals won what was then the regional semifinal in blowout fashion, 4111. The 2018 versions of these two programs have reached this point in similar postseason fashion. Elder blew through Moeller and Lakota East with ease, outscoring the two opponents 69-6. Colerain, similarly, defeated St. Xavier and Milford by a combined score of 83-23.

The biggest question entering Friday's game was whether or not the Panthers would have the Greater Catholic League-South's leading passer, Michael Bittner, under center. Bittner left the Lakota East game after just four plays last week. Junior backup Matthew Luebbe came on in relief and scored three touchdowns (one passing, two rushing) in the win.

ECC invites Lebanon, Little Miami, Winton Woods to join effective fall 2020 High Schools! The trio of schools were given until Nov. 23 to accept, but all three accepted Saturday, Nov. 10 according to the ECC Twitter account. Lebanon is currently a member of the Greater Western Ohio Conference, while Little Miami is a member of the Southwest Ohio Conference. Winton Woods has been an independent and was most recently a member of the Fort Ancient Valley Conference. When the original ECC formed, Winton Woods was not invited, so the Warriors are rejoining several familiar schools. Winton Woods athletic director and basketball coach David Lumpkin previously expressed interest in joining back

Scott Springer Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

In a recent press release, the Eastern Cincinnati Conference extended membership invitations to Lebanon, Little Miami and Winton Woods High Schools. Competition in the new 10-team conference will begin in the 2020-2021 season. From the release: This is a historic day for the ECC. We believe the expansion of the conference to ten schools enhances our already outstanding athletic and academic position in Southwest Ohio. The entire ECC would like to extend our congratulations to Lebanon, Little Miami, and Winton Woods

Q: &

A:

Q: Dr. Godbey, I recently experienced a heart attack and I feel my hearing has decreased. Is that possible? A: Yes. Hearing loss happens 54% more often in people with heart disease than in the general population. This is because the inner ear is extremely sensitive to blood flow. Inadequate blood flow and trauma to blood vessels of the inner ear can contribute to hearing loss. There is a definite link between cardiovascular health and hearing health. It’s time for a hearing test by a certified audiologist. If hearing loss is diagnosed, treatment with hearing aids is recommended. Hearing aids are designed to help people with active lifestyles improve their quality of life. Visit our Cincinnati, OH location by calling 513-725-3559 to schedule an appointment for a FREE HEARING SCREENING on December 17th, 18th, 19th & 20th, 2018. We can help!

in March, but the league decided at the time to remain at eight teams. When Withrow made a move to rejoin the Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference, ECC commissioner Ray Spicher reached out to the Warriors again. "You think about the travel we've had to endure over the last few years of being independent," Lumpkin said last spring. "Also playing for league and having league recognition is important for kids." Ironically, on the night of the invites, Winton Woods and Little Miami were playing football in the second round of the OHSAA tournament. Lebanon was also in the running to join the ECC last March and was also sought out in this recent expansion discussion. Little Miami AD Keith Pantling made a detailed presentation to the Little Miami School Board about a month ago who voted 4-1 to proceed and apply to the ECC. "We're appreciative their leadership recognized the benefits of our membership," Pantling said. "It's indicative of all the great things we have going on here in the District. It makes sense for us long term as our community continues to grow. There are numerous positives including scheduling, travel time and expenses, increased gate revenues due to proximity of opponents, the exposure of our student-athletes and the excitement of our surrounding rivalries with bordering communities like Kings, Loveland and Lebanon is sure to be special." Little Miami won the SWOC all-sports trophy each of the last two years. Since the ECC's inception, Loveland has won a state football championship in 2013 and a girls soccer title in 2017. Withrow's girls track team won state titles in 2015, 2016 and 2017. The Tigers will rejoin the CMAC in 2020-21. Lebanon, Little Miami and Winton Woods will start their memberships in 2020-21.

Boy Scout Troop 221 of Wyoming honors three Wyoming scouts Three Boy Scouts from Troop 221, sponsored by the Presbyterian Church of Wyoming, have recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout. They are Jeffrey Bonner, Alex Easton, and Ian Kite. Fewer than five percent of Scouts attain the highest rank of the Boy Scouts of America. An Eagle Scout must have completed at least 21 merit badges, served as a leader in his troop, and organized a service project that benefits his church, community, or school. Jeffrey Bonner is the son of Brian and Christine Bonner of Wyoming. Jeffrey’s project involved installing new landscaping at the Healing Space of Cincin-

nati. He is currently a senior at Wyoming High School. Alex Easton is the son of Derek and Beth Easton of Wyoming. Alex’s service project involved siding and refinishing a municipal storage facility in Huntsville, Utah. Alex is a senior at Waypoint Academy in Utah. Ian Kite is the son of Geof Kite and Beth Miller of Wyoming. For his service project, Ian built planter boxes and a fence enclosure for a garden at a public housing development in Oxford, Ohio.
