KROGER TO BAN PLASTIC CHECKOUT BAGS BY 2025 Alexander Coolidge Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
HELLO Kroger said it will ban all plastic checkout bags by 2025. America’s largest supermarket chain said it will transition from single-use to reusable bags and ultimately eliminate 123 million pounds of garbage annually sent to landfills. That would quadruple the amount of plastic the retailer currently recycles. Kroger sells reusable bags starting at $1 each. Kroger will ramp up the availability of those bags. Shoppers for the foreseeable future will still have the option of asking for paper bags. Kroger said it is also looking to cut back or phase out plastic bags for produce and meat, but it’s focusing on eliminating checkout bags for now. The ban will directly affect a wide swath of consumers: Kroger serves 9 million customers every day at its nearly 2,800 stores in 35 states and the District of Columbia. Kroger’s Seattle-based QFC subsidiary, with 63 stores in the Pacific Northwest, will be the first division to eliminate the bags by 2019. Besides hundreds of its namesake stores in the Midwest and the South, Kroger operates hundreds more under the Harris Teeter, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, Fry’s and other nameplates. Kroger officials said they are responding to growing environmental concerns raised by shoppers, employees, communities and nonprofits. “The plastic shopping bag’s days are numbered,” Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen wrote in an editorial submitted to The Enquirer and USA Today. “Our customers have told us it makes no sense to have so much plastic only to be used once before being discarded – And they’re exactly right.” Kroger’s decision will pressure other major competitors to follow suit. With nearly $123 billion in annual sales, Kroger is the second-largest grocer (behind Walmart, which is a mass discount retailer

that gets half its $500 billion in sales from food). “We’re the first major retailer in the U.S. to do this,” said Jessica Adelman, Kroger’s vice president of corporate affairs, which oversees company environmental and sustainability efforts. Kroger uses 6 billion such bags annually, while the industry discards an estimated 100 billion bags each year. Only 5 percent of supermarket bags are recycled by consumers. Last year, Kroger collected almost 38 million pounds of plastic for recycling in those instore bins at the front of stores. Additionally, Kroger recycled another 28 million pounds of plastic from other operations for a total of 66 million pounds. Kroger officials said they decided to implement the transition at QFC because of the division’s small size and half its stores already are under a ban enacted by Seattle in 2012. Goal. FC Cincinnati’s plans for a $30 million practice and training complex in Clermont County were greenlit last Wednesday morning. The Clermont County Commissioners removed a significant obstacle to the soccer club’s plans to build in Milford with its approval of a new 1 percent lodging tax. The money generated by the tax will go toward the $5 million cost of land for the complex. The city of Milford agreed to pay $3.5 million of the cost through the sale of securities. FC Cincy is paying the remaining $1.5 million. The $244,000 the additional lodging tax is projected to raise will be funneled to Milford for debt service. Even with the proceeds from the additional tax, Milford will have to pay over $40,000 of the debt service from its own funds. Besides assistance with the cost of land, FC Cincinnati is also receiving, through the Clermont County Port Authority, over $20 million in incentives for construction including the issuance of lease revenue bonds. Once fully operational, the facility is estimated to bring in an additional $6.7 million annually to the county and an additional 50 to 60 jobs. Approval of the lodging tax was not unanimous. Clermont County Commissioner David Painter voted against the tax. Before casting his vote, he noted that the commissioners recently granted a 20 percent tax exemption for 10 years on real estate taxes, worth about $75,000 a year, for Design Within Reach which is building a facility in the county’s South Afton Industrial Park. The $17 million project will contribute about 85 jobs to the county. Ahead of his yes vote, Commissioner David Uible said that FC Cincinnati is See SOCCER, Page 1A

Last year, the referendum on California’s 2016 ban of plastic bags fell short of repealing the law, so it remains in effect. Kroger’s Los Angeles-based subsidiary Ralphs operates under the California law. The legislation banned plastic single-use bags, but authorized a heavier plastic bag designed for multiple uses that shoppers can buy for 10 cents. Hawaii (where Kroger has no stores) has a de facto statewide as its largest counties have outlawed them. Other cities that have enacted bans on plastic shopping bags are Austin, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Other cities and counties that are beginning to crack down with fees are: Boulder, Colorado; Brownsville, Texas; Montgomery County, Maryland; New York City; Portland, Maine; and Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, several states have passed laws preventing local governments from enacting their own bans: Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa,

Who are the 2018 Women of the Year? Sheila Vilvens Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
They are advocates for foster care, education and mental health. Champions for the homeless and heroes in the battle against racism and hate. They are the 10 dynamic women selected as recipients of the 2018 Enquirer and The Greater Cincinnati Foundation Women of the Year awards. The women will be celebrated at an awards luncheon Friday, Oct. 26, at the Hyatt Regency Cincinnati. Luncheon tickets and sponsorship opportunities can be found at www.gcfdn.org/woy. diverse, they have one thing in common: They all give of themselves to elevate the quality of life in their communities and the region, according to Michael Betz, head of marketing and community relations for The Enquirer. The Greater Cincinnati Foundation has been connecting people with a purpose in our region for 55 years, said Ellen M. Katz, President/CEO of GCF. “We are proud to stand again with The Enquirer to celebrate 50 years of honoring exceptional women who have all had great purpose and dedication to making our region a place where everyone can thrive,” she said. “This year’s 50th class of Women of the Year honorees shows the diversity of our region and how even one person can truly make a difference.” The story of each Women of the Year
Q: Dr Godbey: How can I tell if I have a hearing loss? A: If you answer “yes” to some of the following questions, you may have a hearing loss: Do you often ask people to repeat what they say? Do you have trouble hearing in groups? Do you think others mumble? Do you turn up the volume on the TV or car radio? Do you have trouble hearing the alarm clock? If you think you or someone you know might have a hearing loss, call us, we can help. A quick but through audiologic evaluation can put your mind at ease or help diagnose a hearing loss that can be treated with hearing aids. Nothing is more frustrating than continually asking people to repeat themselves, answering questions inappropriately, or being disconnected from the world around you. Arrest made in November killing in West Price Hill Cameron Knight Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
U.S. marshals and the Cincinnati fugitive apprehension unit captured a suspect Aug. 23 in a West Price Hill killing that happened nearly 10 months ago. Kiandre Erkins, 21, is charged with murder, aggravated robbery and other charges. Erkins is accused on fatally shooting Joseph Leonard, 33, in the 1000 block of Seton Ave. just after noon on Nov. 6, police said. Erkins had contact with law enforcement at least seven times since the homicide. Less than two weeks after Leonard was killed, Erkins was arrested after police said he was seen fleeing from a stolen vehicle. Investigators said a K-9 found him hiding behind a dumpster. He was released on his own recognizance. In January, he was arrested again when police found two loaded handguns inside a car that Erkins was riding in, court documents state. He faced weapons charges, but was not driving the car, records show. A grand jury ignored the case. In March, he was back in court to address the stolen vehicle incident. He was convicted of obstructing official business and sentenced to probation. In April, May and June, he was cited five times for various traffic violations. He was cited for driving without a license, speeding and a safety restraint violation in three separate incidents in April alone.

Blueberry season means pie, of course Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld
Peak blueberry season is in July with some carryover into August. I guess that’s why I’m getting requests for blueberry pie recipes. A Kentucky reader has “a couple pounds” frozen. She wanted a blueberry streusel pie. An eastside reader wanted to augment canned blueberry pie filling with fresh blueberries.
To top that, reader Lois Boekley sent in a wonderful recipe for blueberry sauce. She uses it to top pancakes. (If you want Lois’ pancake recipe, check my site). So I guess my work here this week is pretty clear, and it’s “berry good”. Tip for freezing blueberries: Pour them, unwashed, in single layer onto cookie sheet, freeze hard uncovered, and store in containers. That way they’ll stay separate. To use, place in colander and run cool water quickly over them to clean. They may thaw a little, but won’t get mushy.
No need to thaw frozen blueberries before using. Good for you! Blueberries help your immune system, among other benefits, and have good amounts of fiber. Coming soon: Candied jalapeno slices Back to school snacks for kids Rita Nader Heikenfeld is an herbalist, educator and author. Find her blog online at Abouteating.com. Email her at rita@com munitypress.com with “Rita’s kitchen” in the subject line.

Tip
Another “recipe improv.” No real recipe, but here’s how I do it:
To make blueberry shortcake, combine some fresh blueberries with enough blueberry sauce to coat generously. Spoon over shortcake biscuits and top with whipped cream.
Put 2 cans blueberry pie filling in a bowl. Stir in a heaping cup of fresh or frozen blueberries. Mix 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 2 tablespoons lemon juice and stir this into filling. Follow above instructions for streusel and baking.

Viewpoints Preventing cancer in firefighters Sherrod Brown Guest Columnist Community Press
In emergencies, while the rest of us run from danger, firefighters run toward it. And when they rush into the flames they’re not just putting their lives on the line – even firefighters who come home safely face long-term health risks. A National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study confirms that firefighters face an increased risk of cancer because of exposure on the job. That’s why I worked with my col-
leagues on the bipartisan Firefighter Cancer Registry Act, which President Trump signed into law last month. Our bill requires the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to create and maintain a voluntary registry to collect data on cancer among firefighters. We’ll use that data, along with existing state data, to better assess the ways our first responders are at risk, so we can work to prevent more cancer diagnoses. We’re also requiring the CDC to develop a strategy to maximize participation in the registry, so we can get accurate, useful data. All the data in the registry will be
made public, so other experts can use it in their own research. Last month, I talked with Mike Taylor, President of the Ohio Association of Professional Firefighters. Mike, like many other Ohio firefighters, has seen too many of his brothers and sisters fall victim to the scourge of cancer. We need to learn why firefighters are at such high risk and get researchers the data they need to find answers and solutions. National firefighter organizations, including the National Volunteer Fire Council, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and the International Asso-
ciation of Fire Fighters, among others, pushed for this legislation. We know this is just a first step and there’s a lot more work to do to protect our first responders. But this bill will help us make progress. If you only watch cable news, you wouldn’t think anything bipartisan is getting done in Washington. But this legislation is another example of how there are plenty of issues where we put partisanship aside and come together to do what’s right for the people who serve this country. Sherrod Brown is the senior United States Senator from Ohio.

How clean is your community?
Oak Hills already has security
I live in Delhi Township and I have to say I am disappointed in the amount of trash I see everywhere. Businesses, yards and shopping centers, it’s everywhere. But it’s not just Delhi. Lately, I notice more and more the amount of garbage lining the streets and it disgust me. Neeb Road has a sign posted stating a $500 dollar fine for littering. I drive my daughter to school every morning and look at the same litter that has been there for months. Why are people so careless to the place we call home? It looks bad, and it fills our sewers and streams and what about the animals? I just don’t understand it. I’ll take into account that when it’s been cold
Fact: In case you forgot.... Security measures were already being implemented at Oak Hills District Schools, spending $75,000 so far on security updates at all buildings in the district, even purchasing a patrol dog costing $10,000. Money came from the Permanent Improvement fund. Now continue upgrading or adding to systems already in place. Western Hills Press, Oct. 3, 2012, reported Health Services are in place, with a partnership established between the school district, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and MindPeace, providing students access to high quality mental health services at school.
and snowy who wants to collect trash in the cold right? Everyone needs to do their part. Throw it in the trash (although most of the things on the side of the road are recyclable). Don’t hang beer cans from the trees and branches in our neighborhood. If you see garbage throw it away. Mayhew Ave., Mount. Alverno, Dunkin Donuts parking lot, Neeb Road, Delhi Pike and the list goes on and on. So, my question is ... Who is supposed to clean it all up now? When? What approach do we take as a community to clean this up and stop it from happening? CJ Brewer Delhi Township

Sports Elder grad brothers face off for MSJ, TMC Adam Turer Special to Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK
Chris. far right, and Renee, far left, Kandra join their sons at their scrimmage Aug. 18 when Mount St. Joseph (Evan, second from left) took on Thomas More College (Evan, second from right). PROVIDED
The Kandra brothers have made many family memories on football fields all over the Tristate. On Saturday, Aug. 18, they made a unique memory, and it wasn’t even during a game. Evan Kandra’s Thomas More Saints scrimmaged against younger brother Spencer Kandra’s Mount St. Joseph Lions. It was a rare opportunity for the brothers to go head-to-head. “As a parent of sons who play football, it’s just an amazing opportunity when you can have two play college football, let alone play against each other,” their father, Chris Kandra, said. “We’ve been waiting for this for a really long time and it was such a thrill to finally see it happen.” The boys are Elder graduates and both
have several Panthers teammates on their college team. But Spencer wanted to major in athletic training, so he enrolled at MSJU. The two grew up playing alongside one another on the offensive line and it was not until late in Spencer’s career that he moved to the other side of the ball. “That was the first time I’ve gone against him since I was a senior in high school,” said Evan. “Mom and dad were very excited. In high school, the only time we were on the field at the same time was on kickoff return. This was probably the first time they’ve seen us both on the field at the same time since then.” “I honestly think it was more of a big deal for them than it was for me,” Spencer said. “It was really special for them to See BROTHERS, Page 2B

On Aug. 15, the Reds RBI Softball team was eliminated from the 2018 RBI World Series in Minneapolis with a 6-5, extra-inning loss to Tampa RBI, the Southeast Regional champs. The Cincinnati team had won its previous two games to finish pool play with a 2-2 record and rallied from an early 2run deficit to take a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the 7th and final inning. Tampa tied the game to force extra innings and scored an unearned run in the 8th inning for the 6-5 victory. Prior to elimination, the Reds RBI squad dropped their pool opener to the LA Dodgers RBI team 11-8. Anna Bauer
and Lauren Taylor gave the Reds a brief second-inning lead with extra-base hits. The next day, they lost to Harrisburg 8-7 despite home runs by Whitley Arno and Jordan Shotwell. Later that afternoon, the Reds beat Houston 3-2 on a home run by Sarah Slate. On Thursday, Aug. 14, the Reds defeated Dream RBI of New York 11-1 to finish pool play 2-2. Bailey Garcia struck out seven in five innings of work and the girls collected 14 hits on the day on their way to the 10-run victory. This year marked the first-ever trip to the RBI World Series for the Reds RBI Softball team, who eliminated the ninetime defending champions from CleveSee SOFTBALL , Page 2B

“My first opportunity, I got real excited to finally show my brother what’s up. I couldn’t help but smile. I got him on the first one,” said the Lions defensive end. “I’m a year younger. He’s honestly my best friend. I like to work with him more than against him. Whenever we have a chance to go against each other, it’s competitive, but I always like playing with him.” The friendly competition began in the backyard, and spread to the football field 14 years ago. Spencer and Evan have two younger brothers, one of whom plays for Elder. They also have a sister who is a track and field star for Seton. Competition was always fierce. “Football in our backyard, we played quote-unquote two hand tag,” said Evan. “We weren’t the two-hand touch type family,” added Spencer. “We were the bring you to the ground and make you bleed type family.” Evan humbly admitted Spencer got the best of him in their first one-on-one drill on that Saturday. It was a spin move that will go down in Kandra family lore. “Being brothers, there’s always sibling rivalry. They’ve been teammates since first grade together. They were on the same team every other year,” Chris said. “It’s fun. They help push each other.” This year, the brothers are both living at home. There is not much time for smack talk with both having busy preseason schedules. There was a bit of chirping last
week, and coaches and teammates on both sides knew that the Kandra brothers would be seeing each other face-to-face for the first time as college football players. The rivalry no longer exists, as the annual cross-river contest was discontinued following the 2013 season. “I would love to have The Bridge Bowl back,” Evan said. “Not only my brother plays there, but a lot of guys I played with in high school go there, too.” Said Chris, “We’ve wanted the Bridge Bowl to come back for a number of reasons. There are a lot of kids at both schools who went to Elder.” Saturday’s joint practice delivered on the high expectations. Chris and Renee Kandra will spend the fall following their sons. Evan’s Saints have a road-weary schedule with just three home games, but the parents will be there for all of his final home games as a senior. When they are not enjoying tailgating in Crestview Hills, they will be following Spencer and the Lions. Both teams enter the 2018 season with high expectations. The brothers will follow each other’s seasons from afar, receiving updates from their parents and via social media. They will team up during the week, mostly to increase their parents’ grocery bill. On Saturdays, the Kandras will be in the stands somewhere, proudly supporting one of their linemen. “We’ll divide and conquer,” said Chris. “We get 10 straight weeks of beautiful college football.”

Labor Day Cincinnati Aruna Run raises funds to help sexually enslaved women The 10th Annual Cincinnati Aruna Run will be held on Labor Day, Sept. 3, in downtown Cincinnati at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Hosted by the Aruna Project, a US non-profit headquartered in Cincinnati, 100 percent of registration fees and donations will go toward freeing, empowering, and employing sexually enslaved women in India. The run will be one of 15 races across the country the Aruna Project hosts this year to raise awareness about sexual exploitation and generate money to aid in the freedom process. Last year, more 750 people participated in the race, and more than $62,000 was raised for the cause. “The Cincinnati Aruna Run is a tangible way for our community to move from compassion to action in the fight to end sexual slavery, while specifically giving new beginnings to the women we serve,” stated April Berg, Aruna co-founder and director of development. The Aruna Project model uses money raised from the runs in part to conduct outreach programs, consisting of counseling and skill/trade development training, to enslaved women in the brothel system in India. The training includes an offer of freedom and sustainable employment through the Freedom Business owned by the Aruna Project. The women are employed as artisans and produce beautiful, hand-crafted goods, including the athletic drawstring bags that each Aruna Run participant receives on race day. “Considering that human trafficking is a global epidemic, many people wonder, why India?” said Ryan Berg, Aruna co-founder and executive director. “While combatting it everywhere is important, India is paramount for us because Indian women’s risk of being sexually exploited is increased by the con-

Entry fees are $40 for the 5-mile, $35 for the 3-mile, and $25 for the 1-mile. Easing Type 1 fears for new college students Few things are more hectic for parents and young adults than preparing for college life. The stress can increase exponentially when the new college student has Type 1 diabetes. The College Diabetes Network is there to help. The Network has 115 chapters across the United States, including two in Southwest Ohio and five others within about 125 miles of Greater Cincinnati. Chapters exist at University of Cincinnati, Miami University, Ohio State University (two), University of Kentucky, Ball State University, Indiana University, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis and Purdue University. Christina Roth, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a teenager, founded the group in 2009 while in college. The group became a 501c3 non-profit in 2010 and a full-time organization in 2012. The College Diabetes Network lists three pillars of programming on its website, www.collegediabetesnetwork.org: tools, network and ecosystem. Its main goal is to connect college stu-
dents who have Type 1 with each other. Ellie Thiemann and Madeline Foley co-founded the CDN chapter at the University of Cincinnati, which formed in 2016 and was officially recognized as a university organization in 2017. “My biggest rule, and I tell people this, diabetic or not, is to introduce yourself to your professors,” Thiemann said. “That sounds silly and can feel kind of awkward, but if you take two minutes at the end of your first class of the year and say ‘Hey, it’s great to meet you and I’m excited for this class, and by the way, I’m Type 1 diabetic,’ that can make a huge difference in avoiding future awkward situations, in case something comes up for that class. Also, be your own advocate. College is your chance to define diabetes and what it means to you and how it relates to who you are, but if you’re in a situation where I need to take some insulin right now or eat some Starburst right now, just do it.” For more information about the group, visit its Facebook page, College Diabetes Network UC. Cooper Snyder honored for Ohio education efforts
From left: John Carey, Cooper Snyder and Harry Snyder. PROVIDED/GREAT OAKS CAREER CAMPUSES
Ohio Chancellor of Higher Education John Carey visited Wilmington recently to honor a life well lived in the service of others. Carey, who oversees Ohio’s 2-year and 4-year public colleges and universities as well as Ohio Technical Centers, came to Cooper Snyder’s home in Cape May to recognize Snyder’s legacy. Snyder, who served as an Ohio Senator from 1979 to 1996, was passionate about education throughout his career and was instrumental in helping Ohio students from kindergarten through
college. Among his many efforts to benefit students during his tenure in the Ohio Senate, Cooper Snyder pushed for the Post-Secondary Enrollment Option (PSEO), now called College Credit Plus. PSEO enabled high school students to take college courses free and earn dual credit during the high school day. Snyder also advocated for mandatory kindergarten attendance; according to a proclamation by Chancellor Carey, this effort “recognized the importance of early intervention and
school readiness.” The Chancellor also noted Snyder’s support for proficiency testing which “grew out of a desire to ensure that students graduating from high school were prepared for college.” Senator Snyder was presented by Chancellor Carey with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Ohio Department of Higher Education. They were joined by Snyder’s son Harry Snyder, who is President/CEO of Great Oaks Career Campuses. Great Oaks Career Campuses

If you live or work in Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, or Southeast Indiana, this offer is for you. Account requirements: General Electric Credit Union (GECU) membership is required; if you live or work in the Greater Cincinnati area, you can join and become a member. Visit gecreditunion.org/membership for details. APY = Annual Percentage Yield. The Bump Certificate is a new product and this offer does not apply to existing certificates. This offer and details, including the stated APY, are accurate as of August 24, 2018, are available for a limited time and are subject to change at any time. 13.05% APY and 3.30% APY are the highest yields available for 3-year and 5-year Certificates, respectively as of August 24, 2018, according to the Bankrate.com “CD Rates for August 2018”: https://www. bankrate.com/cd.aspx. Bankrate.com does not include all companies or all available products. 2Certificates will be opened and interest will accrue as of the date funding is received; funding must be received within 10 days of opening the account. Fees may reduce earnings; subject to early withdrawal penalties. Bump Certificates: Terms include 3- and 5-Year Bump Certificates. During the term of this certificate, the certificate owner has the option to initiate a rate adjustment one time per year during the term of their certificate to the prevailing GECU rate on that product. One rate adjustment per year is reflective of an anniversary year, based on the certificate open date. The certificate owner must provide a written or verbal request. 3This offer is applicable to new money or funds from maturing certificates at GECU. New money is defined as proceeds not previously on deposit with GECU. To change an existing termed certificate outside of its 7-day grace period, you will be assessed a penalty fee and must add a new money equivalent to the current balance of the certificate(s) the day the penalty is assessed if under $10,000; for balances of $10,000 or more, you must add a minimum deposit of at least $10,000 in new money. If electing to use non-maturing deposits currently with GECU, when transferring balances under $10,000, you must Insured by NCUA match (or exceed) the amount transferred from your GECU account with a new money; if transferring balances of $10,000 or more, you must add a minimum deposit of at least $10,000 in new money.
