The family of the Cleves woman who went missing in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has issued a statement after her body was found late Tuesday afternoon. “I want to speciﬁcally thank the National Park Service for their incredible efforts. The cooperation shown between more than 50 agencies was amazing, comforting, and very supportive,” reads the statement, provided by the Park. Search crews found the body of Mitzie Sue “Susan” Clements approximately two miles west of the Clingmans Dome parking area and three-fourths of a mile south of the Appalachian Trail, according to a park news release. Clements, 53, had been missing since the afternoon of Sept. 25, when she and her daughter became separated during a hike on the Forney Ridge Trail, roughly a quarter-mile from Andrews Bald. The family thanked a number of parks employees for their dedication and support, including Chief Ranger Jared St. Clair, Incident Commander Joe Pond, Operations Chief James Latendresse and family Liasion Florie Takaki. “We also want to thank the countless

The search continued to grow in size and scope as crews braved rain, fog, wind and temperatures in the 40s to scour the densely wooded, mountainous area of the park, which straddles Tennessee and North Carolina. Officials closed Clingmans Dome Road and set up a command post there. Verizon brought in a portable cell tower to help remedy the poor cellphone service. Crews employed helicopters, canine teams and specialized searchand-rescue drones as the number of agencies contributing to the effort continued to climb. By Tuesday, more than 100 people from 45 agencies had joined the search. Teams used satellite GPS units to keep track of which areas had already been searched. Scientists with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory stitched together aerial photographs from their drone, assigned coordinates to each pixel, and searched the photographs for colors such as the gray in Clements’ tennis shoes. The Literacy Network of Greater Cincinnati will install 50 new Little Free Libraries in Cincinnati. They will be installed primarily in lower income areas, said Michele Guenther, president of the Literacy Network. A Little Free Library is a “take a book, leave a book” free book exchange, usually out of a wooden box installed on a street corner. Anyone in the community is free to take a book or bring one to contribute. There are more than 75,000 Little Free Libraries in 88 countries worldwide. As many as 400,000 people in Greater Cincinnati are functionally illiterate, according to statistics provided by the Literacy Network. Between 15 percent and 20 percent of the adult population cannot read well enough to complete an application or read a story. “The link between academic failure and reading failure is welded in reading failure,” according to the U.S. Department of Justice, and statistically 85 percent of juveniles who interact with the juvenile court system are illiterate. Children growing up without books are on average three years behind those who grow up in homes with lots of books, according to the Little Free Library webpage. See LIBRARIES, Page 1A

told The Enquirer that Clements was a cheerful person, with a friendly greeting at the ready for “everyone she saw in the office.” “To know someone that something so terrible happened to is awful,” Stephens wrote in a message. “I imagine it will affect us all in some way, especially the folks in business services, her work group.” Stephens added he and Clements exchanged small talk occasionally when she walked by his office for ice water. Another colleague spoke with Stephens earlier Tuesday about Clements’ disappearance. “All he kept saying was, ‘I just talked to her,’” Stephens said. Clements’ family did not speak to the media except to say she was a “wonderful mother to three children.” She was hiking with her youngest daughter on this trip. Elizabeth Clements, another of Clements’ daughters, created a GoFundMe on Tuesday to assist with family expenses during the search effort. As of Tuesday night, the campaign had raised more than $4,000. “Since my family is from the Cincinnati, Ohio area, we have decided to start a GoFundMe page to help cover the unexpected travel expenses that come with staying in the area for this search process,” she wrote on the fundraising page. “More than anything, we would appreciate your continued prayers for my mom to be located safe and soon. We are so incredibly thankful for the many organizations helping make this search possible, and for each individual search member for being so kind, supportive, and positive throughout this entire process.” The City of Cincinnati said Clements’ brotherin-law, who is a firefighter, traveled to the park with some of his colleagues to help out with the search. Park visitors reported seeing her former husband and other family members passing out flyers bearing her picture. Park officials said foul play was not suspected in Clements’ disappearance. They did not immediately offer further details once her body was found late Tuesday afternoon. “Our hearts are with the family and friends of Ms. Clements,” the park said in the release. “The park would like to extend our appreciation to the many agencies and organizations that participated in the search effort.”

‘He’s bleeding bad’: Police investigating homicide in West Price Hill Sheila Vilvens Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

One man is dead following a Sunday morning shooting at 4119 Glenway Ave. in West Price Hill. Around 10:20 a.m. Sept. 30, Cincinnati Police closed streets in the area to investigate the homicide. The victim is identified as Bryant Green, 32. Pete Witte, owner of Baron Engraving, showed up at his business shortly after the incident took place. His office is across the street from where the shooting occurred. He could hear all the commotion of people, someone yelling that “he’s bleeding bad” and to call 9-1-1, he said. A couple of cars pulled over to help. “As I was standing there a cop happened to be driving down Glenway. We all jumped in the street and waved him down,” Witte said. Shortly after more police and paramedics arrived, he said. As the scene turned to a homicide incident, police marked it off with tape and area streets were closed. It was not the morning Witte planned. “Kind of makes you wish we all went to church Sunday mornings,” he said. The suspect is described as a male wearing a gray hoodie last seen on Dewey Avenue.

A faux memorial marks the area in Colerain Township where a sex doll was mistaken for a dead body last week. James Love, the public information oﬃcer for Colerain Police, said gooﬁness is likely at the heart of the tribute. “Somebody, we don’t really know who, went down there and put up a cross,” Love said. A photo of the memorial was posted on the “City of Cincy” Facebook page. It includes an Elmo doll, cross and other toys. The doll has posthumously been named Mandi, according to the cross. “Let’s take a moment and pay our respects,” the account posted, along with a photo of the memorial, which was shared with The Enquirer. Colerain Police Chief Mark Denney said last week, after the doll was discovered, that it was found in a plastic bag. It was discovered near the Richardson Forest Preserve. Some commended the unknown actors who erected the memorial. Others criticized it. “No longer following,” wrote one person in the “City of Cincy” thread.

Remember the simple baked chicken recipe I shared last week? Well, I had purchased more chicken than I needed, so I decided to make a quick gumbo soup with the rest of the chicken. This is the gumbo soup I made for years in gargantuan quantities for our Holy Trinity church bazaars. It’s a nice soup for these cooler autumn days. I received an interesting note and recipe from Delhi reader Carol Graham who enjoys making her family’s favorite cucumber salad with a vinegar and sugar dressing. “I think I may have created it. I’ve never seen a recipe for this cucumber dish. It’s a family and potluck favorite,” she said. The difference between Carol’s salad and maybe yours could be that Carol doesn't presoak the cucumbers in salt water, and she ﬁnishes it oﬀ with sour cream. I’m going to make Carol’s version soon. Carol didn’t specify the kind of vinegar. I would use cider, but clear would work, too.

1 cup rice

2 cucumbers, peeled and sliced

Go to taste on ingredients. If you buy broth, make sure it’s real broth, not simply flavored. Or if you want to see me make chicken broth from scratch, check out my Fox 19 segment where I show Frank Marzullo just how to do it.

⁄2 medium onion, sliced and diced

Sliced fresh parsley for garnish (opt)

⁄2 cup vinegar

1 generous pound boneless, skinless chicken, cut into 1⁄2” or so pieces

Salt and pepper to taste

1 cup sour cream

3 nice cloves garlic, minced

Palmful fresh basil, chopped, or 1 teaspoon dry basil

Mix cucumbers and onions together. Whisk vinegar, water and sugar together. If too tart, add more water. Pour over cucumber and onions. Refrigerate 4-5 hours or overnight. Before serving, drain cucumbers well. Then stir in sour cream. Blend well and serve.

Have you ever wondered what the holdup was in replacing the Brent Spence Bridge? The Brent Spence Bridge was originally meant to handle 80,000 vehicles in a day. It now sometimes must carry 200,000 vehicles in a day. A bridge is functionally obsolete if it can no longer reasonably accommodate all the vehicles trying to cross it. The Brent Spence Bridge has been deemed functionally obsolete since the 1980s. A new, adequate bridge has already been designed. Its estimated cost will be $2.6 billion. It would have a total of 12 lanes and four emergency median strips on two levels instead of eight

lanes and no emergency median strips on two levels as it does now. Federal transportation studies have found that motorists waste 3.6 million hours of their time each year waiting to cross the bridge. Those same studies have found that motorists burn 1.6 million gallons of extra fuel each year while waiting to cross the bridge. The Brent Spence Bridge is the greatest single source of unnecessary air pollution in our region. The Ohio side of the bridge is in U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot’s Congressional district. Politicians almost never get specialinterest money to do infrastructure projects such as bridges, so replacing the Brent Spence Bridge is probably not the big priority with Chabot as he’d like us all to think it is with him. Where does Chabot get most of his special-interest money? Big business.

According to the Federal Election Commission, 48 percent of all of Chabot’s campaign money in 2016 came from big businesses or from big-business related PACs. Last December Chabot voted for President Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Bill. One of the things the bill did was to put a 21 percent ﬂat tax on all corporate incomes. Until then, we had a graduated corporate income tax where smaller businesses paid a smaller percentage of their total income in taxes than did bigger businesses. Now every business pays the same percentage. Under the new law, a small business earning $50,000 in 2018 will see its corporate income taxes increase by $3,000. A bigger business earning $20 million in 2018 will see its corporate income taxes cut by $2.8 million. According to the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation, the net

effect of this law will be to reduce federal tax revenues by $1.5 trillion over the next decade. The bill did not contain any spending cuts whatsoever. Here we have a man who is the head of the House Small Business Committee voting in favor of a tax increase for small businesses and a corresponding but larger tax cut for big businesses whose net effect will increase the national debt by $1.5 trillion over the next decade. If you take $1.5 trillion and divide it by the $2.6 billion cost of a new bridge, you find we could be replacing 580 such bridges over the next ten years with that money. The problem is, big businesses are financing Chabot’s political campaigns – not the people queuing in line to cross the bridge. Futbol Club Cincinnati fans with high-minded expectations of their club might want to mark their calendars for Thursday, Nov. 8. Maybe block out the time slot occupying 8 p.m. to around 11 p.m., too. The United Soccer League announced Wednesday afternoon the league's

championship match, the USL Cup, will be staged on that date, with kickoﬀ scheduled for 8 p.m. The game is scheduled to be televised on ESPN2 and streamed on the ESPN App, according to a league news release. “We are absolutely thrilled to bring our championship game to fans around the world,” USL President Jake Edwards said in the news release. “This has been the biggest season in league history and

the increased visibility we have seen through our expanded partnership with ESPN this year has been tremendous. We expect to have another compelling championship game for fans to enjoy this November.” The match is a long, long way oﬀ in terms of results for FC Cincinnati, and it's hardly a guarantee they'll advance that far. Three playoﬀ and two regularseason matches would precede the

championship match for Cincinnati, but it's still a date to keep in mind locally as the Queen City club is the betting favorite to win the USL Cup. FC Cincinnati last week clinched the USL's regular-season championship and is unbeaten since May 26 – a streak that has spanned 21 matches. FC Cincinnati's playoﬀ run is set to begin Oct. 20 against a to-be-determined opponent.

In addition to his prowess on the pitch he’s also Oak Hills’ kicker. This past Friday he made a 28-yard field goal in the Highlanders’ loss to Lakota East. Moeller’s made 5 of 6 field goals this season with a long of 41. He’s a perfect 13 of 13 on extra points. His 28 points is the most by a Highlander this season.

New fall festival in Delhi promises family-friendly fun The ﬁrst annual Harvest Hootenanny, presented by Delhi Parks and Recreation, will be held at Story Woods Park in Delhi on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Harvest Hootenanny kicks oﬀ at 12 p.m. and will feature a 20-animal petting zoo from Honey Hill Farm, local crafters with homemade products, a jacko’-lantern contest, carnival games for children, seasonal beers and beverages for adults, food provided by Cowboy Quesadillas, and a performance from local folk band P’s in a Pod.

The project will serve as the students’ community service act for the year. Ohio’s 1st Congressional District race has risen to such national importance that it spawned a supergroup over this past weekend. Rock royalty Beck and Dave Grohl performed together at a home in Silver Lake, California to raise money for Democratic candidate Aftab Pureval. The Hamilton County Clerk of Courts is running a tight and heated race against veteran Congressmen Steve Chabot, R-Westwood. The progressive political group Swing Left organized the fundraiser. A representative with the organization conﬁrmed the event happened but wouldn’t comment further.

Talk show host David Letterman last week headlined a fundraiser in Clifton for him. Chabot’s campaign spokesman Cody Rizzuto in a statement slammed the “Hollywood elite” and quoted a Foo Fighters song to turn against Pureval. “If Aftab had any understanding of this district, he would know he would be better oﬀ talking to voters rather than rubbing shoulders with Hollywood elites in California,” Rizzuto said. “But given the last few weeks he’s had, I guess the voters are the last people he wants to talk to. As the Foo Fighters say in one of their most popular songs– ‘It’s real, the pain you feel. You trust, you must confess. Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?”
