Darius Rucker is coming to Cincinnati this summer to play a concert at Elder High School. Yes, we promise you read that right. The event, hosted by Minnesota Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph features Darius Rucker and the Bronson Arroyo Band at the Pit, the football stadium at Elder. The concert will be May 7 at 7 p.m. Rudolph, a 2008 Elder graduate, had been leading eff orts to build the Panther Fitness Rudolph Center. Proceeds from the event will benefi t Elder’s Altiora Fund, which will assist with the completion of the fi tness center and help provide scholarships to Elder students in need, organizers said. The concert will also benefi t Cincinnati based Kids2Camp, which helps send children to sports camps over the summer. Rudolph runs his own camp and over the summer, 200 kids were able to attend on scholarship. For Rudolph, it’s an opportunity to add to the storied history of the Pit. He said the idea came to him after he saw big-name artists selling out professional and college stadiums, like Garth Brooks playing at Notre Dame Stadium. Obviously, playing at the Pit will be a more “intimate” aff air. “There’s so much history and tradition at the Pit,” Rudolph said. “This is a unique and intimate opportunity to see one of this biggest names in country music.” Rudolph met Rucker while he was at University of Notre Dame. The two have become friends over the past 10 years. After Rudolph explained that Rucker wouldn’t be playing to a crowd seated in metal bleachers, Rucker was “all on board for it.” “It’s really special because, fi rst and foremost, it lets us complete the Panther Fitness Center, but it also provides scholarships to students in need,” Rudolph said. “This really hits home for me because this is about getting kids into Elder and giving them opportunities to further their education.” Tickets will go on sale next week and Rudolph expects them to go quick. Tickets will range in price from $45 to $129. “I’m honored that Darius is joining us for this concert. It will be an incredible opportunity for Cincinnati to come together for a great cause and to see Darius truly rock the Pit,” Rudolph said. Former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo and his band will open for the superstar. See CONCERT, Page 3A

FC Cincinnati scoops up more West End land Sharon Coolidge Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

The FC Cincinnati stadium development is expanding to the north, with the team taking control of eight more properties between Wade and Bauer streets in the West End. The plan: Build a 1,000-space parking garage there, which would eliminate Wade Street between John Street and Central Avenue, according to a map given to The Enquirer by the team. The garage would be directly north of the stadium. It’s the fi rst glimpse of what would be the main garage for the FC Cincinnati stadium, though the team’s deal with the county to build it isn’t yet done. No residents are being displaced. A woman who lived there and ran a beauty salon out of one of the buildings and a person who used buildings for shortterm rentals agreed to non-disclosed terms to turn their properties over to the team. “FC Cincinnati wants to be a good neighbor related to what goes around the stadium,” said Cody Parsons, FC Cincinnati President Jeff Berding’s chief

of staff . The team is expected today to fi le paperwork with the Cincinnati Planning Commission asking for the Wade Street right of way and a zoning change for properties. The team is seeking approval to add apartments, condos, offi ce, retail, restaurants and bars to the area. FC Cincinnati is building a $250 million privately funded Major League Soccer Stadium in the West End, with almost $35 million in infrastructure help from taxpayers. The Stadium is set to open in March 2021. For the garage to be ready by the then, construction must begin early next year, hence the request now, Parsons said. Next: The plan must garner a recom-

mendation from the planning commission and then go to Cincinnati City Council for approval. Each phase of approval has resulted in drama-fi lled meetings, most notably last May when council forced FC Cincinnati to help a group of residents being displaced from buildings the team took control of. Notably, the map shows a 1,000space parking garage, the fi rst time the location has been made public. But negotiations continue between FC Cincinnati and the Board of Hamilton County Commissioners continue. The board voted three times to build the garage, but there is a diff erence of opinion between commissions and the team about how much county taxpayer money should go into the project.

A little piece of Italy opened in Western Hills. Marco’s Pizza – which claims to be the only national pizza chain founded by a native Italian – was scheduled to open its 21st Cincinnati location Monday, Nov. 18m at 5098 Glencrossing Way. The new location is owned and operated by local entrepreneur Tony Boeing, who was introduced to Marco’s Pizza 10 years ago. The Western Hills location will be his second Marco’s Pizza store. “I wanted to bring more Marco’s Pizzas to the Cincinnati community because they provide fresh, quality food to their guests,” said Boeing. “I was a customer fi rst and I value the authenticity of the brand, which is why I’m excited to give others the opportunity to experience the Marco’s diff erence.” Boeing said he intends to open more Marco’s Pizza locations in the future. Pasquale “Pat” Giammarco, the founder of Marco’s Pizza, grew up making pizzas with his father after they immigrated to the United States from Sulmona, Italy. Marco’s Pizza provides a menu of classic pizzas and specialty pizzas like the White Cheezy, Deluxe and All Meat. Salads, subs, CheezyBread and other items are also available.

It’s a unique opportunity, as Arroyo and Rucker are friends. They met because the musician is a Reds superfan. Arroyo said he’s excited to open the show at the Pit. “It’s fantastic. The Pit has hosted thousands of football games and sporting events in its 81 years, said Elder’s athletic director Kevin Espelage. “ A Darius Rucker concert will add yet another one-of-a-kind experience to this stadium,” Espelage said. How to help loved ones struggling with addiction The holidays are a time to be with friends and family and to show how much we care about them. But coming together at the end of the year may also cause concerns to come to light, including those about addiction.

O’dell M. Owens, MD, MPH President & CEO

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, addiction is a disease that changes the brain. A person’s typical needs and desires are replaced with a new focus on seeking and using substances. It is important to remember that the signs of addiction vary. Addiction is common in our region. The 2019 Ohio Health Issues Poll, an annual survey of Ohio adults, found that 30% of Southwestern Ohio adults had a friend or family member who experienced problems because of prescription pain reliever abuse. In addition, 22% knew someone who had problems as a result of using heroin.Ten percent knew someone who had problems because of methamphetamine use. If you or someone you love is experiencing addiction, say something. Help is nearby and resources are available. Express your concerns for your loved one’s safety and well-being openly and honestly. Finally, listen and offer y pp your support. Local programs such as Safe Pla aces Cincy help link people with treatment providerss. Drivers traveling to Cincinnati’s West Side during the day should probably avoid Westwood Northern Boulevard as a way to get there for a couple of weeks. The area of the closure is the hill climbing out of the Mill Creek Valley after the Hopple Street Viaduct to English Woods and beyond. Both westbound lanes of the four-lane boulevard are closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for two weeks as part of an ongoing sewer project, according to a Metropolitan Sewer District of Cincinnati (MSD) news release. A detour will be in place to allow drivers to go around the work on Sutter Avenue from Beekman. One eastbound lane will be maintained in the construction area during the project. U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown announced new legislation that would provide federal assistance to a nationwide network of AfricanAmerican burial grounds, including Union Baptist.

bound lane open during rush hour times and overnight from 4 p.m. to 9 a.m. during the project. MSD and its contractor Schweitzer Construction are replacing a deteriorated 24-inch sewer beneath the road, according to the release. The

project is expected to last two weeks, depending on weather and conditions, according to the release. Editor’s note: Information included refl ects this article’s original publication date – Nov. 13. Visit Cincinnati.com for possible updates.

Brown, an Ohio Democrat, introduced the bill with Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) after he visited Union Baptist earlier this year, following news reports of vandalism at the cemetery. “It’s so important that we restore this place where Powhatan Beaty and Dr. Jennie Davis Porter and so many other great black Ohioans are laid to rest, so that it can be appreciated for the

historic place it is,” Brown said during a press conference at the cemetery. Brown was joined by Hamilton County Commissioner Denise Driehaus, Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley, Rev. Dr. Orlando B. Yates from Union Baptist Cemetery, and Dion Brown from the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. The bipartisan legislation, known as the African American Burial Grounds Network Act, has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives and received a committee hearing. If it passes both houses of Congress and is signed into law by President Trump, it would create a voluntary, nationwide database of historic African American cemeteries within the National Park Service and provide grant opportunities and technical assistance to preserve the burial grounds. In the meantime, Commissioner Driehaus said she had secured $10,000 in federal funds to help maintain the cemetery. And Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley said City Council was preparing to vote on an ordinance to provide $5,000 in fi nancial assistance. Founded in 1864, Union Baptist was one of the only cemeteries in Cincinnati that would allow black burials, even for war heroes like Beaty. The former Cincinnati farmer served in the Union Army’s 5th United States Colored Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, winning the Medal of Honor - the nation’s highest military honor.

Two ways to make corn pudding for Thanksgiving Classic corn pudding Baking times are approximate. In my oven, I made half the recipe and it took close to 40 minutes. About 10 minutes before it’s supposed to be done, check it. What about subbing in half & half? Yes, you can. The custard won’t be as silky but still yummy. Ingredients: ⁄ 4 to 1⁄ 3 cup sugar

1

3 tablespoons flour 2 teaspoons baking powder

Rita’s family’s corn pudding. RITA HEIKENFELD

1 1⁄ 4 teaspoons salt

Sherry’s family’s corn pudding. PROVIDED

6 large eggs

Well, I have a confession to make – about corn pudding. I’ve never made one of the most popular recipes, which contains corn muffi n mix and sour cream. I make corn pudding with corn from our garden or store bought frozen corn. The recipe contains whipping cream, which makes for a silky smooth custard. That all changed when Sherry Mitchell, of Cherry

Ridge Farms, Georgetown, Ohio was a guest on my cable TV show. Sherry and her family are farmers with a mission. Their working farm is 3rd generation, and includes a therapeutic horsemanship program. Sherry loves cooking with her family, and this corn pudding from her mother’s family is one of the side dishes she made. A must at Thanksgiving, Sherry told me. As for me, I was impressed not only with the wonderful, moist, just sweet enough, taste, but also with the fact that we kept opening the oven for other items and the pudding still turned out fabulous. So you have two corn puddings to choose from. Which one will it be?

Mitchell family’s corn pudding

Instructions:

Rita’s Kitchen Rita Heikenfeld

2 cups whipping cream 8 tablespoons butter, melted 6 cups frozen corn, thawed — let come to room temperature or 6 cups canned shoe peg or other corn, well drained Instructions: Preheat oven to 325. Spray 9x13 pan. Whisk sugar, flour, baking powder and salt together. Set aside. Whisk eggs, whisk in cream and blend well. Whisk in butter. Whisk in sugar mixture, blend until smooth, then stir in corn. 9x13 pan full recipe: Pour into casserole and stir corn around so it’s distributed evenly.

Preheat oven to 350. Ingredients:

Whip eggs fi rst.

1 Box Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix

Add all other ingredients and mix well.

Bake 45-55 minutes, or until golden and knife inserted in center comes out clean. Center may be a bit jiggly.

1 Cup sour cream

Pour into an 8 by 8 inch greased pan.

8x8 pan half recipe:

2 eggs

Bake 45-55 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Bake 35-40 minutes, following instructions above.

Oak Hills High honors 300 veterans

More than 300 veterans joined 2,700 Oak Hills High School students in the Pledge of Allegiance at the school’s annual Veterans Day assembly.

Oak Hills students prepared signs and artwork to welcome veterans to the school’s annual Veterans Day assembly on Nov. 4. PROVIDED PHOTOS

Their ages ranged from 19 to 97, but the 300 military veterans were all heroes in the eyes of the cheering, applauding Oak Hills High School students and staff who welcomed them to the annual Veterans Day assembly on Nov. 4. “You have earned the respect of all in attendance today,” Principal Travis Hunt told the group. “You have defended America through the best and worst of times. Thank you for your unwavering service.”

The day included breakfast for the veterans, an assembly during which each veteran was announced, lunch and afternoon panel discussions throughout the school at which students had the chance to ask veterans questions. “When you’re in combat, it’s not like in the movies where you’re fi ghting for your mom, apple pie and the USA,” said Vietnam War veteran Dwight Waldorf. “You’re fi ghting for the grunt who is on your left and on your right.”

National Guard veteran Elizabeth Reynolds told students, “When I look at you, I think that everything you’re afforded has made everything I did worthwhile.” Overseeing the event was Oak Hill High School business teacher Paul Limpert, a West Point graduate and Bronze Star recipient who served 17 years in the U.S. Army and led an armored division during Desert Storm. Krista Ramsey, Oak Hills Local Schools

Vietnam War veteran Dwight Waldorf shared his experiences with Oak Hills High School students during panel discussions that followed the school’s annual Veterans Day assembly.

Sports CMAC hosts basketball media day Alex Harrison Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

The Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference hosted a basketball media day at Gamble Montessori High School on Sunday, Nov. 10. The conference made available representatives from its girls and boys basketball programs while also conducting other league business. Coaches voted on preseason a preseason poll, preseason all-CMAC selections, preseason player of the year and gave recommendations for academic awards. Coaches also voted on the newcomer of the year which names the best freshman or transfer just starting in the conference. Polls and award winners will be released closer to the start of the season. Without naming the newcomer of the year, it’s easy to guess one of the popular choices. Taft freshman Rayvon Griffi th has been named as a top Ohio and national prospect since he was in grade school at Oyler. He’s already received Division I off ers before ever playing a varsity game. Griffi th, along with reigning CMAC player of the year Paul McMillan IV who transferred from Hughes to Woodward, brought the most attention to the league. Taft assistant coach Mark Mitchell said the attention Griffi th and McMillan receive speaks to the area players that came before to set the path for new players to receive attention. Other coaches were pleased that toplevel athletes gave a spark to the league and Cincinnati basketball as a whole. Woodward fi nished the previous season in last place in the CMAC Red Division at 3-20 (1-9 CMAC). Since then, McMillan joined the team as well as his father who joined as an assistant coach to head coach Jarelle Redden’s staff . “Any coach in the state of Ohio would want Paul McMillan, so it’s a blessing,” Redden said of his new player. “I feel blessed as a coach because he’s a fl oor general. He’s a leader. When you have someone like him on the fl oor it makes your job easier. He has game-changing ability and team-changing ability.” Redden also mentioned McMillan IV had a 4.0 GPA and leads in the classroom as much as on the court. Leadership will be needed to improve against a non-conference schedule that includes St. Xavier, Northwest, Walnut Hills and Summit Country Day. Taft, Hughes and Aiken shared the Red Division title as each school was 8-2 in-conference. All three lost contributing players, but added key pieces that

Rayvon Griffith, one of the area’s top prospects, hustles downcourt Aug. 24 at Walnut Hills. Griffith played at Oyler in eighth grade, was at Hughes for the summer and is now at Taft. THE ENQUIRER/SCOTT SPRINGER

could create another race to the top. Besides adding Griffi th to the Senators, Taft also added coach Mitchell who returned to the school after one season leading Western Hills. Mitchell was the Taft head coach when they won the state title in 2011. Aiken won 20 games, but graduated D’Arris Dean who averaged 21.8 points per game. Hughes also graduated players in addition to losing McMillan as a transfer. “Any time you coach a basketball team you’re trying to build a program,” Hughes head coach Bryan Wyant said. “The last three years I think we won 63 games and we’ve been senior heavy all three of those years and this year’s no diff erent. This year it looks a little diff erent, but the goals are still the same.

We’re going to see if we can defend our home court. We’ve gone three-straight years in the league without a home loss.” Wyant said returning senior Kionte Thomas and junior Cameron McKenzie would lead the Big Red. McKenzie averaged close to 16 points per game last season. After a perfect run through the conference and a CMAC Blue Division title, Gamble Montessori stacked its schedule to prepare for its fi rst season in the new school building with a new gym. Gamble will play St. Xavier while hosting Deer Park and Flagler Palm Coast from Florida while also participating in the MLK Classic and Flyin’ to the Hoop. “We have a pretty challenging schedule,” Gamble coach Roberto Allen said.

“We get to play a variety of styles. We get GCL basketball, CMAC basketball which will test us mentally. As we enter the playoff s, we’ll be prepared for what each team throws at us.” Allen, as well as Gamble girls basketball coach Le’Eir Harshaw, both reigning division coaches of the year, stressed the importance of moving into the old Mercy High School and getting the regulation-sized gym that came with it. Gamble Montessori’s prior gym was smaller than most courts which provided some diffi culties which both overcame to win their divisions. They’ll look to do it again. That is after the media day held at Gamble to show off the new location. The basketball season begins Nov. 22 for the girls and Nov. 27 for the boys.

Rudolph gives Elder ‘SportsCenter’ shoutout Dave Clark Cincinnati Enquirer USA TODAY NETWORK

Former Elder High School standout Kyle Rudolph recently had a huge night with a one-handed touchdown catch in the fi rst quarter, another touchdown grab later in the same quarter and a reception on a successful two-point conversion attempt in the third quarter of the Minnesota Vikings’ 28-24 win against the Dallas Cowboys. But in a postgame interview with Scott Van Pelt on ESPN’s SportsCenter, Rudolph didn’t forget to show support for his Panthers as they prepared to face

the St. Xavier High School Bombers in a playoff showdown Friday in Mason between Greater Catholic League-South heavyweights (visit Cincinnati.com for results). “Hey, thanks Scott. Go Panthers, beat Bombers!” Rudolph said to Van Pelt at the conclusion of the interview. “There you go. Right on, Kyle Rudolph,” Van Pelt replied. Rudolph and Los Angeles Rams long snapper Jake McQuaide are the two former Panthers currently on NFL rosters. Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly represents the Bombers.

COMMUNITY NEWS Annual nature art show set for November 23 Western Wildlife Corridor is having their second annual art show about nature on Nov. 23 from 3-6 p.m. at the Kirby Nature Center located at 2 East Main Street, Addyston, near South Road and Cleves Warsaw (near where Cleves Warsaw becomes Main St.). Last year’s show was quite successful and well attended. This year we have four artists and one photographer: ❚ Sally Sisson Anderson has been drawing and painting all her life. She studied under CharlieHarper while attending the Cincinnati Art Academy, and she is artist in residence at for Western Wildlife Corridor. Earlier she was the illustrator for the Great Parks of Hamilton County, and illustrated an Indian museum for them at Shawnee Lookout Park. One of Sally’s illustrations was featured International Artist Magazine. She also illustrated a children’s book, and a cover for a national magazine - the Herb Companion. ❚ Jessee Smith has been making jewelry with beads since she was 12. Jessee learned basic metal working techniques at Mt Joseph College, and experimenting with lost wax casting in 2002. She likes working with her hands, and that is refl ected in her jewelry and sculpture pieces. She doubled majored in art and in natural science with a focus on entomology. Most of Jessee’s inspiration comes from the insects and butterfl ies that she loves. ❚ Mary Ann Perkins. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati, she was a research scientist for 30 years. Then she was a video writer for an international corporation. When she retired, she got interested in the creative process and in the animals at the zoo. Then, as a self-taught artist for two years, she began to paint animals and other themes. She loves to play and experiment with colors in diverse media. ❚ Lori Vogel is a Cincinnati native

who received her BFA from Mt. St. Joseph College. Living in Bright, Indiana, Lori paints and draws full time in both acrylic and colored pencil. She depicts the local wildlife on wood, stone and canvas. Lori hopes to bring a bit of nature into other’s lives, and give them an appreciation of nature that many never see. Lori’s work can be found in the Pendelton Center, at the Cincinnati Nature Center, and in homes across the area. ❚ David Garza. This photographer has an interest in nature subjects and abandoned human made objects and structures that nature is quick to reclaim. Recently, he has been experimenting with home-made pinhole lenses. David has been a local photographer for music scene for the last 20 years, getting much of his inspiration from the documentary end of the craft. His work has been used by musicians and bands for their album covers and promotional material. Bring your friends to enjoy early holiday shopping and see some great art refl ecting our natural environment. Light refreshments served. Westside resident beats the odds against pancreatic cancer The cancer doctors at OHC (Oncology Hematology Care) want to be able to tell every patient their cancer is in remission, and for patients with pancreatic cancer, that is a special gift. While pancreatic cancer survival rates have been improving over the last several decades, the disease is still considered largely incurable. According to the American Cancer Society, the oneyear survival rate is 20% t and the fi veyear rate is 7%. However, if caught early, survival improves. “It was almost six years ago when I went to the emergency room for heart problems,” said Paul, a Westside resident. “I had a diligent ER doctor who was doing scans and he said he saw a ‘smidge’ on my pancreas. I asked him what he meant by a smidge. I later found out it was stage 2 pancreatic cancer.” Pancreatic cancer itypically has no symptoms until it’s at an advanced stage. In Paul’s case, it was diagnosed at when the tumor is most treatable. He had surgery to remove his tumor and was then told he needed to see a cancer doctor (oncologist). “I didn’t understand why I had to see an oncologist since they removed it during surgery. And I wasn’t happy about having to skip my trip to Florida. But they said I had to, so I started meeting with diff erent doctors to fi nd a good one,” he explained. Paul chose OHC’s Suzanne Partridge, MD, a medical oncologist and hematologist, and the team at OHC West for his treatment. The team developed a plan for Paul that included 18 treatments of adjuvant chemotherapy. He admits it wasn’t easy, but he’s glad he had the team at OHC to help him get through it. “They were wonderful. They explained everything. I love those gals,” Paul said. “Paul is such an inspiration. Not

many people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer make it to the fi ve-year mark, and he has surpassed that,” said Dr. Partridge. “He is a beacon of hope for others with pancreatic cancer because they see that he has experienced a longer survival period and maybe they can, too.” “Paul is also a real character,” added OHC’s Amy Sheldrick, RN, BSN, OCN, Nurse Navigator. “He always brightens our day with his humor or one of his funny shirts. We’re so happy that he’s doing really well.” OHC believes survival rates like those for pancreatic cancer are just a temporary gauge. The doctors, nurses, researchers and the entire team at OHC challenge those statistics every day. You can learn more about pancreatic cancer and treatment options, or request a second opinion, at https:// www.ohcare.com/condition/pancreatic-cancer/ or call OHC at 1-800-7104674. Lesia Golden, OHC

Santa Maria Community Services awarded $150,000 toward Building Youth Assets Program Santa Maria Community Services has been awarded a fi ve-year grant totaling $150,000 from The Daniel and Susan Pfau Foundation toward its Building Youth Assets in Price Hill program. The Building Youth Assets Program helps youth develop social and emotional competencies through a combination of structured group facilitation and consistent family advocacy. The program targets high-risk youth ages 10-16 from Lower Price Hill. In addition to the program’s focus on youth, a large component will focus on their families, specifi cally parents and guardians. A strong family focus will help identify factors aff ecting family stability, including but not limited to barriers to education, mental and physical health, fi nancial stability, and basic needs. Once these factors are identifi ed, Santa Maria Community Services will be able to assist families with obtaining
