Choosing a school for your child Parents everywhere want what’s best for their children, and education is a priority. With all the school options out there, how do you find the right one for your child? For more than half a million families each year, the answer is an independent private school, according to the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). Each independent school has a unique mission that guides its offerings. According to NAIS president Patrick Bassett, this means that “whether you’re looking for a specific style of

teaching, a particular class or sport, or a community that shares your values, you can find an independent school that meets your child’s needs.” Independent private schools ask students to apply for admission and the admission process typically begins almost a year before the student wants to enroll. Families read school websites, visit school open houses and narrow down a list of the schools to which they’d like to apply. As a first step, it helps to

Seton empowers future leaders Seton High School is an all-girls Catholic school located in the historic Price Hill neighborhood. Seton teachers and staff take a truly unique view when educating the young women in Greater Cincinnati. They educate the whole person by helping each student form the life skills needed for the world in which she will one day live. She will earn a competitive college-prep education. She will take on the chal-
lenges of leadership. She will understand the importance of giving back to the community. And she will do all this while making connections and friendships that will last a lifetime. Seton offers 12 Advanced Placement classes and five dual enrollment classes. The rigorous curriculum challenges even the most advanced students. In addition, Seton ensures every student can succeed by offering a holis-
tic Student Support Services program. Seton takes technology very seriously. It is vital to equip each student correctly to ensure she is ready for the environment she will face in college and career. Each student is issued a Tablet PC at the beginning of her freshman year. At the same time she receives the PC, she is trained by our full-time, professional tech staff in the best practices to use and maintain the computer. Seton students step up. All students are expected to be leaders and they surpass expectations each time. Leadership opportunities are available in the classroom, on the sports field, in extracurricular clubs or activities and on the stage. When a Seton student
graduates, she understands she has the skills, confidence and moral grounding to lead the way in college and beyond. Servant leadership – it is one easy way to spot a Seton woman. Seton students and alumnae are known for their willingness to give back to their communities – in Price Hill, throughout the U.S,. and in the world at large. Seton students understand the impact that can be made by giving of themselves to others. They reflect on their faith as the base for service and how to best demonstrate their beliefs through helping others. Seton graduates move into their post-secondary experiences with a strong spiritual foundation and commitment to sharing their gifts and blessings
with those in need. Seton’s curriculum, culture and values shape young women who are prepared for the next phase of their lives. The Class of 2012 earned more than $9.7 million in college scholarships and 99 percent of the class went on to post-secondary education. The Seton experience does not end on graduation day. Each young woman who attends Seton joins a sisterhood of close to 16,000 women. The Seton legacy includes doctors, lawyers and even a member of the U.S. Secret Service. The choice to attend Seton is not just a commitment to four years of high school; instead, it is an introduction to a lifetime of family, faith, learning, leadership and service.

consider what the ideal school for your child would be like. Is it small or large? Competitive or more nurturing? Are there aptitudes or interests you’d like to foster in your child? Challenges you’d like to address? Application deadlines can vary from school to school. Independent schools usually require some testing for admissions, transcripts from the child’s last school and recommendations from current teachers. Interviews with students and their families take place in the fall and winter. For very young children, schools often conduct group interviews or have the child visit a class to help gauge

whether the school is the right fit for the student’s needs. “It’s very important to check with the school about its specific requirements and deadlines,” notes Bassett. The admissions office can also tell you about various options for paying for an independent school education. Most schools offer fi-
nancial aid for families that qualify and some offer tuition payment plans, which spread fees out over multiple payments. Bassett adds that “if you’re concerned about paying for a private school education, asking about options makes good sense.”

Portrait of a Saint James graduate If your child is just embarking on his or her elementary school journey, graduation may seem like an eternity from today. However, providing a solid educational foundation is crucial. Saint James School’s tradition of excellence and strong academic program are rooted in a Catholic values-based education. Our students thrive in a premier, parochial educational setting, and Saint James is proud to be the only elementary school in the U.S. to have earned four national Blue Ribbon of Excellence in Education Awards. This May, Saint James School will proudly graduate 101 eighth-grade students. These future graduates join a talented group of alumni who continue to excel in high school, college, and beyond. Saint James is confident that the Class of 2013 will be well prepared to carry on this tradition of success, having received a strong academic and religious foundation. As you contemplate the beginning of your child’s educational career, consider the following qualities of a Saint

Demonstrate servant leadership
Saint James students are taught at a young age to serve others. Monthly Christian Service Days – as well as regular service projects – give students the chance to experience the joy of helping those in need. Additionally, through the work of the 8th Grade Leadership Council, our junior high students function as servant leaders as they select, plan, and coordinate our schoolwide service projects.
Well-rounded individuals
While there is an emphasis on the core content areas, all students participate in weekly art, music, technology, Spanish and physical education classes taught by talented teachers. Junior high students have the opportunity to select electives classes such as guitar, sculpting, and photography. Students at every grade level attend daily religion classes and weekly mass. Students have the opportunity to participate in our annual Art Fair and musical performances, and many participate in one of the 40 student activities sponsored by the school and parish. Perhaps the words of a current student best articulate the value of a Saint James education: “The teachers at Saint James have taught me so many things throughout the years. But most importantly, they’ve taught me that I can do anything I set my mind to.”

Love of science promoted at John Paul II
At John Paul II Catholic School, we take pride in offering our students enriched learning experiences that will develop critical thinkers, create a thirst for knowledge, and prepare them for the future. Our students learn about the stock market, entrepreneurism, foreign language, compete in academic competitions throughout the Tristate and collaborate with other schools to solve worldwide problems. “Girls in Science” is just one example of the many classes available to our students. The program, geared to sixthgrade girls, promotes a love of science and strengthens problemsolving skills while working with scientists from the community. Each month, the girls meet to engage with a woman scientist whose occupa-
tion may be a chemist from P&G, a physician, pharmacist, veterinarian, or an environmentalist, to name a few. Through presentations and hands-on activities, various aspects of the scientists’ jobs are highlighted, and the students use the scientific method to assist in solving problems that affect our world. Topics have included learning about the affects of an oil slick on the wildlife and how to clean it up, learning about and growing bacteria, and visiting local hospitals and veterinary offices. Our girls also attend the University of Cincinnati for a Science Day in April. The program affords our students the means to network with successful women in the field of science and learn more about opportunities that
are available to them as they prepare for high school and college. At John Paul II School there are many activities that expand beyond the classroom and prepare our students for success in the future. “Girls in Science” is just one enrichment possibility. experiential learning – the application of academic concepts to realworld problem solving. Badin’s goal – to prepare students for the real world – can’t be attained without a commitment to graduate students with a plethora of experiences. Programs like the new Scholar-Leader Academy, Junior Statesmen of America, INTERalliance of Greater Cincinnati and JETS engineering club, as well as a vibrant Christian service program, take our students out of the classroom as they work to become servant leaders who shape the future of the world around us.
Just as in real life, people who have the love and support of family feel more comfortable to take risks and pursue their dreams. This is especially true at Badin High School. The Badin Family extends beyond our halls, as students form lifelong bonds with other students, alumni, faculty and staff. Our small size of 510 students means that students are not just a number at Badin – they are members of our RAMily who are challenged, supported, encouraged and molded to be the best that they can be. manship, Ethics and Integrity from the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA). La Salle has won the award more times than any other school, public or private, in Southwest Ohio. » Completion of major renovations to the baseball and soccer fields, and expanded Internet audio and video broadcast coverage of Lancer sports programs through WLSN, the La Salle Broadcasting Network. » A higher profile in the performing arts: Its Vocal Ensemble earned Silver Awards in the 2012 World Choir Games, The Pride of La Salle Marching Band finished fourth
in class at the Bands of America competition, and the Drama Department will perform during the Ohio Thespian State Conference in March. All of this has resulted in an increase in applications and enrollment, attracting students from across Southwest Ohio and Southeast Indiana. To achieve the milliondollar goal, Principal Tom Luebbe, ’73, announced La Salle has initiated the “Lancers Helping Lancers” challenge. “This pledge, and the matching funds it will raise, will help La Salle attract and retain the kind of young men we want, those who are committed to excelling in the classroom and preparing for their future, built upon a strong Catholic faith,” he said. La Salle is asking alumni, parents and friends of the
high school to raise an additional $500,000 by June 30. “Lancers Helping Lancers” has implications beyond increasing enrollment, according to Chris Winiarski, ’96, director of Campus Ministry. “La Salle has always been a special place to many of us graduates, so naturally we want to help more young men come here,” he explained. “I see this challenge as a way to support the spiritual development of each of our students and to support the authentic Catholic education we offer.” Every student participates in the De La Salle Signum Fidei four-year leadership development program. Students serve those in need locally and through immersion trips in the U.S. and Central America.
