Discover more at Children’s Meeting House Montessori To succeed in today’s diverse and changing world, students need more than just a solid knowledge of core curriculum. They also need the ability to problem solve, apply knowledge to new situations, be good communicators, be adaptable, and have the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively. An education at Children’s Meeting House Montessori School does just that. CMH Montessori is founded on the principles of the Montessori method developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, who approached education from a global perspective, considering the child’s intellectual, social, physical, and spiritual development. The school prides itself on being an authentic Montessori school. CMH Montessori programs

extend from pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. Pre-primary classrooms are geared for children age 3 to 6 and include all day kindergarten. A teacher-to-student ratio of 10:1 ensures that students master science, math, reading, writing, Spanish, physical education, and other subjects. Ninety-two percent of our teachers hold master degrees and students benefit from yoga, pottery, and a variety of music programs. CMH Montessori curriculum is based on self-direction, noncompetitive activities that help children develop a strong selfimage, high levels of academic and social competence, confidence, and optimism. Thoughtfully prepared classrooms are divided into curriculum areas with hands on materials that facilitate student curiosi-

ty, investigation, and independent work. Adaptable materials encourage individual development at the child’s own pace according to their needs, skills, and interests. Multi-age classrooms stimulate discussion and collaboration. In this child-centered environment, students can explore topics in depth and detail. Montessori education lends itself to critical thinking, self-discipline and a level of self-esteem that allows children to succeed in any academic setting. Founded in 1973, CMH Montessori grew and expanded into a new building in 2003 and students delight in the warm, inviting classrooms, bathed in natural light. Situated on six acres with woods, a pond, flower and vegetable gardens, and an eco-learning lab, the setting makes CHM

Montessori one the most beautiful and unique schools in Cincinnati. The grounds have abundant plant and wildlife species, which the children enjoy and study through a variety of outdoor programs. In 2008, CHM Montessori earned the State of Ohio’s designation of “Wild School Site.” Parents choose CMH Montessori to foster a lifelong love of learning in their child based on academic strength, adherence to the Montessori method, extra curricular programs, and an emphasis on community and peace. You’re invited to tour the campus, observe our classrooms, and talk with teachers. Please call 683-4757 or visit www.Childrens MeetingHouseMontessori.com. CHM Montessori is state accredited and affiliated with the American Montessori Society.

CCDS seniors earn top honors, college acceptances Seniors at the Cincinnati Country Day School are not only busy with classes and extracurricular activities, but more than 83 percent of them have been accepted to 77 different colleges. And, 14 percent have already committed to their top choice school. Members of the CCDS Class of 2009 have been hard at work preparing college applications, writing essays, fine-tuning activity résumés, and their hard work is paying off. Of the 64 CCDS seniors, 53 have been accepted by at least one of the colleges to which they have applied. Nine seniors have already committed to attend a particular school including one student who has chosen to go abroad and study at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Institutions where CCDS sen-

iors have already been accepted through early action, early decision, and rolling decision admission plans include Boston College, Brandeis, Bucknell, Centre, University of Cincinnati, College of Charleston, Clemson, Colgate, University of Colorado, University of Denver, DePauw, Dickinson, Drew, Drexel, Eckerd, Elon, Emory, Fordham, Georgetown, University of Georgia, Gonzaga, Hampton, Indiana, Kansas, Lake Forest, Louisiana State, University of Maine, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Miami University, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Roanoke, Rollins, Rutgers, Savannah College of Art and Design, Sewanee, Saint Louis, Southern Methodist, Spelman, St. Andrews (Scotland), Stetson, Trinity, Tulane, Vermont and Wisconsin. Last year, 68 CCDS seniors

were accepted to 246 colleges and universities across the country. In addition to college news, 13 CCDS seniors have received recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for 2009, including four semifinalists and nine Commended Scholars. Two students have also been designated as National Achievement semi-finalists and another has been nominated for a Presidential Scholarship, the highest honor given by the U.S. Department of Education. These recognized students represent 20 percent of the entire CCDS senior class. Forty-six students have also been named Advanced Placement Scholars by the College Board in recognition of their outstanding achievement on the college-level AP Examinations taken in May 2008

and prior. One senior was named a National AP Scholar, the highest distinction a student can earn in the AP program. The 46 CCDS students who earned this distinction represent 41 percent of the CCDS students who sat for the exams. Nationally, only 18 percent of the 1.5 million students who take the exams perform at sufficiently high levels to earn the distinction of AP Scholar. “Our community is proud of the students’ academic performance. These extraordinary achievements are a testament to the value our students, families, and faculty place on a great education,” said Head of School Robert Macrae. “Our students are highly motivated, high achievers who are well prepared for college and life.”

This program assures working parents that children have a safe learning environment before and after regular school hours. The school offers a full-day kindergarten as well as a halfday kindergarten. The full-day program provides children who are ready for the challenge of a full day the oppor-

tunity to benefit from additional hours of learning. Children who may need the extra hours for help in certain areas, such as speech, also benefit from the full-day program. In addition, this program benefits working parents by extending the hours their child spends learning and allowing the child to participate in the latchkey program before and after school. Located in East Walnut Hills, the academy draws students from the entire Greater Cincinnati area to its location where education is enhanced by community culture including the Cincinnati Art Museum, Playhouse in the Park and Krohn Conservatory. Over the past several years, nearly 100 percent of the students have graduated and attended colleges and universities.

In the Class of 2009, 26 seniors or 13 percent were honored by the National Merit Corporation. Eighty-seven percent of the Class of 2008 received over $16 million in college scholarships. Meyer Award for sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. The vocal ensemble was invited to perform four times at

Carnegie Hall; and the ensemble theatre was chosen twice to represent the U.S. at the Fringe Festival in Scotland. Creating the next generation of Jewish leadership at Rockwern Under the leadership of a new head of school, Peter Cline, and with an expanded management team and more student resources, Rockwern Academy is engaged in the process of positioning itself as a school that will serve as a national model for 21st century Jewish community day schools. Already this year the school has implemented a new, values based guidance system, a Math Counts Team, Student Forums lead by students, an exchange program with a school in Netanya, partnerships with local and regional schools, brought in cutting edge thin client computing systems and created the framework for two

unique, student run initiatives – a charitable foundation and a micro loan based import/export business. Most importantly, the school has engaged in strategic revisioning at all levels, reaffirming its purpose as creating the next generation of Jewish leadership for Cincinnati and beyond, and connecting with the community in significant ways not only to take advantage of resources but to be a resource. With an emphasis on doing as well as knowing, Rockwern students are heavily involved in Tikun Olam, repairing the world, and learn at the earliest age that they have the ability and the responsibility to make a difference.

MVCA equips students both to succeed in and serve their world Miami Valley Christian Academy (MVCA) continues to innovate in order to produce students who are not only equipped to succeed in a demanding 21stcentury world, but who are also equipped to serve their world. As a Christian school, this not only means staying ahead of the technology curve and offering a breadth of extracurricular activities, but it also means building a foundation of Christian character that ensures its students are spiritually prepared to engage and impact their communities. “Parents send their children here for two main reasons,” said Headmaster Matthew Long. “They want them to receive a quality education; and they want that education to take place in an environment that nurtures their spiritual lives.” MVCA is a preschool through grade 12 school, located in

Newtown, with the motto, “Preparing minds and hearts to impact the world for Christ.” Embraced by the faculty as its mission, these words are more than a slogan hanging on school walls. They define the culture and the atmosphere of the classrooms; they provide the purpose for education. Students at MVCA prepare to impact their world for Christ by experiencing the value of Christian service. Serving others has consistently been an emphasis at the academy, and as the school has expanded the opportunities students have to serve has also expanded. Community projects, volunteer outreaches, donation drives and mission trips are all a part of MVCA student life. When it comes to the rigorous demands of collegiate academics,

St. Michael – where faith, knowledge meet At the corner of Creek and Oak streets in Sharonville, faith and knowledge meet at St. Michael School. Based on a strong tradition of academics, the teachers at St. Michael are guiding their students into the 21st century. The school continually invests in technology to develop the skills the children will need in the future. St. Michael students consistently score in the 80th and 90th percentile in nearly every category of the standardized Terra Nova tests.

Graduates of St. Michael continue their academic success in high school. Parents, students and high school educators all report that St. Michael graduates are well-prepared for their high school careers. The students’ consistent academic performance can be attributed to the dedication of the teachers at St. Michael’s. St. Michael’s boasts a faculty that is extremely qualified and experienced. Several of the teachers have taught the parents of their current students. The teachers’ com-

mitment to Catholic education is evident in their ability to develop the student’s faith formation as well as bring out their best academically. One of the benefits of attending St. Michael is the specialized attention that the teachers can provide each student. In addition to each of the homeroom teachers, the school offers enrichment teachers for reading, math, written language and speech. This specialization allows for students that may need extra assistance in mastering a concept

to get the attention that they need. To help develop well-rounded students, St. Michael offers a variety of after-school activities. What makes St. Michael School the choice for so many families? It is the sense of community and pride that is exhibited by the parents, teachers and primarily the students. Reaching within and reaching out Laura Shoemake | Contributor Stemming from its founding roots with the Ursuline nuns, St. Louis School prides itself in its faith foundation coupled with an excellent learning environment. Nurturing faculty and staff encourage core values of servitude, empowerment, and the importance of spirituality. Collaboration between the faculty, parents, clergy, and parish community strengthen these efforts as well. Building this foundation of faith in students allows them to grow in competence as a whole person, striving to make a difference in our world as they reach out to others to share those talents. By continuing to retool teach-

ing strategies, faculty foster and optimize the vision of student learning. These strategies include, but are not limited to, using SmartBoards in every classroom, United Streaming, Success Maker, Accelerated Reading and Math, Renaissance Place, Edline, fully equipped computer lab, and the utilization of other technological resources. The challenging curriculum prepares students to academically thrive as evidenced by 2008 TerraNova results and students who receive scholarships and awards during their St. Louis tenure. Saints Peter & Paul Academy: Where small classes allow quality time for every student Saints Peter & Paul Academy (SPPA) in Reading is one of a very few private, independent schools in the Tristate educating children in the Catholic faith from kindergarten through eighth grade. It was established in 2007, to continue the traditions of the original Saints Peter & Paul parochial school which had operated since 1853. The new school received its

charter from the Ohio State Board of Education in 2008. Ninety-two children presently attend Saints Peter & Paul Academy where small classes allow teachers to share quality time with every student. Their mission is to educate and prepare children spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and physically; to treat all as individuals with respect and dignity; and to nurture their spiritual for-

mation by encouraging them to become one with God. School spirit abounds at Saints Peter & Paul Academy. The academy recently placed 51st in the nation in the “Keep America Beautiful” recycling contest. This rewarding effort was the result of students, parents and faculty working together. The fellowship shared by those who are part of the academy is hard to explain. It is really

located on 23 wooded acres in Symmes Township, and CHCA makes for an extremely desirable choice. Then consider that all CHCA courses are taught at the college preparatory level – 14 Advanced Placement courses are offered and 100 percent of CHCA graduates go on to top colleges, with the majority accepted into the college of their first choice. Last year’s 100 graduates were accepted into 122 colleges and universities and received close to $5 million in scholarship offers. Students are far from being classroom-bound, though, completing thousands of hours of community service in Cincinnati, Florida, Tennessee, and even in Mexico and India. These are impressive academic statistics, but for many parents

and staff, the well-roundedness of the school experience and focus on the faith centered mission are just as critical. “Integrating an atmosphere of unapologetic faith, academic excellence, promotion of athletics and appreciation of the arts, while actively leveraging and engaging the expertise of staff and parents to further the school’s mission are normal parts of life at CHCA,” said Dr. Rob Hall, middle school principal and CHCA parent. “Instead of settling for one or the other in such scenarios, CHCA is successful in finding ways to do both. That is what makes CHCA such a unique and engaging place to work and learn. That’s why I not only work here but send my own children to school here as well,” he said.
