Welcome

A Letter from the Governor

Greetings, On behalf of the State of Ohio, my wife Karen and I welcome you to the 38th annual Ault Park Concours d’Elegance. Ohio is proud to host this premier event, which showcases some of the rarest and historically significant automobiles and motorcycles in the world. This year’s show celebrates the famed international marque, Mercedes-Benz. The automobile industry has been a significant presence in Ohio for over a century. The legacies of innovation and quality of the early days of motoring are carried on by today’s modern factories producing world-class parts and automobiles across the state. The proceeds from the Ault Park Concours provide much-needed support to Juvenile Arthritis research and assistance programs benefiting children in the Ohio River Valley Region who are afflicted with this debilitating disease. We hope you enjoy your visit to Cincinnati and the beautiful gardens of Ault Park to view the spectacular vehicles on display. Thank you for being a part of this grand event, and we hope that you will return again and again to Cincinnati and the great State of Ohio. Sincerely,

John R. Kasich Governor

Welcome

O

n behalf of the City of Cincinnati, it’s my great pleasure to welcome you to the Ault Park Concours d’Elegance. During the past 38 years, this event has attracted thousands of spectators and participants from across the United States and Canada, becoming one of the most anticipated events for classic car enthusiasts in the entire nation. Ever since the first event was held at the estate of William and Helen Williams in 1978, Concours d’Elegance has become associated with presenting the best of classic car design, generating excitement far and wide among aficionados. I am especially excited about the theme of this year’s event, “A Celebration of Mercedes-Benz.” As you know, it’s also the 60th anniversary of the Ford Thunderbird and the 70th anniversary of the Volkswagen Beetle, so I expect this year’s displays will be especially interesting and engaging. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the Concours committee for all of its hard work. Event organizers have generated more than $1 million for our local chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. Your efforts have been crucial to bringing new awareness to the fight against juvenile arthritis, and the Greater Cincinnati community is grateful. Cincinnati is a city where you will find unparalleled arts, celebrated cultural institutions and world-class entertainment options. We are proud to be the home to one of the top five zoos in the nation, excellent museums, a nationally recognized park system, and the 2015 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. After enjoying the Concours weekend, I hope you will take time to visit the many attractions and amenities that have made our city a popular tourist destination over the years. Cincinnati is proud to host this celebration of automotive excellence once again. As Mayor, I look forward to meeting many of you and enjoying this fantastic event.

Welcome

From the Chief Judge

T

he 2015 team of judges and I would like to thank all of the car owners for bringing such a wonderful group of vehicles to our 38th Ault Park Concours d’Elegance. I hope that you will enjoy this year’s event as much as we enjoy planning it for you. Judging at Ault Park Concours follows the traditional Concours d’Elegance standards set by the early events that took place in the ’20s and ’30s where style, presence, and elegance determine the winners. The judges will also take into account the historical significance of the design of the car, as well as assessing the quality and accuracy of the restoration of the interior, exterior, and the engine compartment. Again this year we are awarding two Best of Show awards—the first from the traditional classes and the second, the Esprit de Sport award, selected from the sports and racing classes. We have assembled a highly qualified team of judges from around the country to aid in the selection of Best of Class, First Place, and Awards of Distinction for each class. We also have many special awards and, lastly, the two Best of Show awards. We believe every vehicle on the field is a winner, and we would love to give every one of you a trophy for taking the time from your busy schedules to display such beautiful works of art for the enjoyment of the public and to further such a wonderful cause.

The Judging Team wishes to thank all of you for coming!

Michael Mereness Chief Judge, Ault Park Concours d’Elegance

Welcome

Letter from the Cochairs

W

elcome to the 2015 Ault Park Concours! While we celebrate our 38th year and our standing as one of the oldest Concours, we pause to honor the memory of our recently deceased founder, Helen Williams. Helen will always be the heart and soul of the Ault Park Concours. Even though the location and event name have changed from its inception at the Williams estate, Helen’s passion for the automobile and for raising funds for the Arthritis Foundation continue. Her vision directs the hundreds of volunteers who work year round to continue her tradition. We would like to personally thank the car owners, sponsors, and volunteers whose collective efforts make our Concours a success, as well as the attendees who support the show. Enjoy your walk in beautiful Ault Park amidst some of the greatest cars and motorcycles in the country!

Have a great day at the show!

Helen Williams, pictured above at the first Concours d’Elegance in 1978, and her husband, William, founded the event in honor of Helen’s good friend Bill Rudd, who had severe rheumatoid arthritis. Helen supported the Concours throughout its 37 years of annual shows and presented the Founder’s Trophy in person in 2014. Helen will truly be missed by her Concours family. We will proudly continue her mission of celebrating automotive excellence and raising money for the Arthritis Foundation.

Hagerty Youth Judging Program The Ault Park Concours is very pleased to continue our “Partnership for Youth” with Hagerty, as we have a shared goal to involve more young people in the automotive hobby. The growing popularity of Hagerty’s Youth Judging Program proves that our joint efforts are successful. More children request to return as a judge for each Concours. Celebrating our fifth year with the program, we continue to feature one of the largest judging teams in the country. Hagerty provides the official judging gear, including T-shirts, hats, and scorecards, and helps teach our young judges about the cars and evaluation criteria. A small group of cars are pre-selected to be scored by the Youth Judges, who also present awards to their top three vehicles. Participants have the opportunity to interact with car owners, carefully inspect each car, and make the determination of their favorites based on the scoring criteria. As an added bonus, the day before the Concours, interested Youth Judges were invited to tour a motorcycle collection and restoration shop, have lunch, and ask questions of the restorer. This program offers space for 25 children between the ages of 8 and 15. If you know of a child who may be interested for next year, please contact the Cincinnati Concours Foundation office at (513) 321-1951 or info@ohioconcours.com.

espite the common yet inaccurate belief that arthritis is “an old person’s” disease, 300,000 American children endure the debilitating pain and severely disabling effects of juvenile arthritis (JA) in its many forms. From systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)—a form of rheumatoid arthritis seen in children— to systemic sclerosis—a form of arthritis that affects the skin, muscle tissue, joints, blood vessels, and even internal organs—juvenile arthritis robs children of the joys of childhood, altering and even threatening their lives. Although there are effective treatments available for some forms of JA, none of them were developed especially for children. Even JA patients who have access to doctors with a Cameron, one of the 300,000 faces of JA clear understanding of the varying forms of the disease must still undergo a process of trial and error before an effective treatment is determined. This wastes valuable time while the child endures chronic pain and the disease progresses, causing lasting damage and disability. The Arthritis Foundation has been fighting juvenile arthritis and supporting families for more than 60 years. Nationally every year more than $4.5 million is invested in outreach and JA specific research that advances treatments and will lead to a cure.

The Year of the

Pioneers AUTOMOTIVE INNOVATORS SHINE AT THE 2015 AULT PARK CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE.

T

THIS YEAR’S AU AULT PARK CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE celebrates thr three of the world’s most important automotive pio pioneers. Karl Benz patented the automobile bile in 1886 188 and, with financing from his wife Bertha, a, helped h launch the automotive giant we now know as Mercedes-Benz. M Henry Ford was the first to o m mass produce p the car and put one in the handss of the e everyday man. And no car was more mass ss produced produ produce than the “People’s Car,” the iconic Volkswagen Beetle, designed by automotiveengineering legend Ferdinand Porsche. All three of these game-changing automotive designs are highlighted on the beautiful grounds of Ault Park during this 2015 Concours d’Elegance, benefiting the Arthritis Foundation.

MERCEDES-BENZ: The Best or Nothing In 1886 engineer Karl Benz gave birth to the automobile—and changed the world forever—when he gained the first patent for a wheeled, horseless carriage powered by an internal-combustion engine. By 1926 Benz merged his operation with the companies of fellow engineers Wilhelm Maybach and Gottlieb Daimler to form Daimler-Benz, home to the Mercedes-Benz, one of the world’s foremost and longest running automotive brands. An impressive display of Mercedes-Benz designs has been assembled for this year’s Concours, ranging from the 50-horsepower 1911 Mercedes Maythorn to the 600-horsepower beast that is the 2014 E63 S AMG.

THE FORD THUNDERBIRD WAS LAUNCHED FOR THE 1955 MODEL YEAR, AND TODAY WE CELEBRATE ITS 60TH ANNIVERSARY. MORE THAN 4 MILLION THUNDERBIRDS WERE MADE BEFORE PRODUCTION CEASED IN 2005. Few examples capture the essence of Mercedes like Joseph Cantore’s 1935 500K Cabriolet A—the sexy styling of its open Sindelfingen body, the luxury of its well-appointed interior, and the brute power of its 5-liter, 8-cylinder engine. It’s all tied together with a superior fit-and-finish that lives up to the brand’s motto: “The best, or nothing.” With the help of a supercharger (the German word for supercharger is Kompressor, thus the “K” in 500K), the 500K churns out roughly 160 horsepower, stops via vacuum-assisted hydraulic drum brakes, and takes the corners with an independent double-wishbone suspension in the front and a coilspring independent rear swing axle—heady stuff for 1935. The 500K was only produced between 1934 and 1936, and according to auction firm Gooding & Co just 11 cabriolets are known to exist today. When Gooding auctioned a 500K Cabriolet A in 2013, it hammered home for $2.75 million. While Mercedes established its reputation on luxurious sedans built for discerning customers, the company has had an equally accomplished history at the racetrack. Few cars embody that competitive spirit like the 1954

18 | Ault Park Concours d’Elegance

Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Coupe presented by Dr. Wellington C. Morton, St. Johns, Florida. One of the world’s truly iconic automobiles, the 300 SL originated when U.S. importer Max Hoffman encouraged Mercedes to make a street version of its curvy W194 racecar. The “300” refers to a 3-liter, fuel-injected, inline 6-cylinder motor, which is canted at 45 degrees to allow for the car’s low-slung hood. The “SL” stands for Sports Leicht, meaning light in weight, courtesy of an aluminum trunk, doors, and hood as well as a space-frame chassis. While ideal for racing, the space-frame design—essentially a skeleton of metal tubing—made traditional doors impossible and led to the car’s most iconic feature: doors that open upward like a seagull’s wing. If contemporary classics are your thing, check out the assemblage of modern-day Mercedes on hand, including the 2014 E63 S AMG of Michael Kreeger, Cincinnati. AMG is the performance wing of Mercedes-Benz, and when the AMG engineers get their hands on a model, excitement is sure to ensue. This particular AMG sedan boasts a twin-turbo, 5.5-liter V8, which produces nearly 600 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque

that’s transmitted to the ground via all-wheel drive. Put the pedal to the floor and tire-torturing acceleration ensues, launching the E63 S to 60 mph in about 3.3 seconds—crazy fast for a car that’s essentially a four-door luxury sedan. But there you have it, the essence of Mercedes: blistering performance draped in style and sophistication.

FORD THUNDERBIRD: A Sports Car For Suburbia Alongside Karl Benz on the Mount Rushmore of automotive designers is undoubtedly Henry Ford. Where Benz is credited with inventing the car, Ford was responsible for mobilizing society at large with an affordable vehicle. By the early 1950s, with post-war America booming, the Ford automobile had transformed from a utilitarian machine to a bold, colorful, and chrome-laden statement of personal identity. Out of that spirit, the Ford Thunderbird was launched for the 1955 model year, and today we celebrate its 60th anniversary. The Thunderbird’s first public appearance came in February 1954 at the Detroit Auto Show, with a base sticker price of $2,695. With a 292-cubic inch V8 power

plant, the first generation T-bird offered a sporty, two-door, topdown driving experience that hit a chord with the buying public. In the first 10 days of its launch, Ford took in 3,500 Thunderbird orders—about 35 percent of its total projected sales for the entire year! For an up-close look at a classic early Thunderbird, check out Jackie Sweeney’s 1956 edition in bold and beautiful “Peacock Blue.” Take note of the design details added in 1956, especially a porthole window in the hardtop and a rear-mounted outside tire carrier, which car enthusiasts the world around associate as quintessentially Thunderbird. Of course, times change and buying tastes evolve, and the Ford Thunderbird was altered many times over its history to fit consumer demand. After ceasing production in 1997, Ford briefly relaunched the T-bird in 2002, presenting a modern interpretation of the classic T-bird roadster. In total, more than 4 million Thunderbirds were made before production ceased in 2005.

VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE: The People’s Car Some call it cute, some call it a “love bug,” siblings in the back seat during a long road trip might even call it a “punch bug” or “slug bug.” Call it what you like, but the fact

is that the diminutive Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most important cars ever built. The Beetle was produced longer than any other car (1938–2003) and has sold more than any other car (21 million). Penned by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche (progenitor of the Porsche sports car), the Volkswagen Beetle provided a simple, yet reliable method of transportation for the average German to travel the country’s newly constructed autobahn highway system. The design by Porsche went into mass production in late 1945. With its horizontally opposed 4-cylinder, air-cooled engine in the rear of the car, the Beetle’s iconic shape created enough interior and luggage space to accommodate a typical German family. And while the early Beetle’s flatfour produced just 25 or so horsepower from its 1100 cubic centimeters of displacement, the car’s lightweight and streamlined body meant it could reach speeds of 60 miles per hour, all the while traveling more than 30 miles per single gallon of gas. What’s more, the Beetle’s simplicity of design meant that it was reliable and well within the reach of the average German’s finances—a new Beetle cost about 30 weeks’ worth of pay for the average citizen. See one of these early Beetles firsthand, courtesy of Richard Reischman, St. Clairsville, Ohio, who

will be displaying his 1952 Type I. This particular Beetle is unique in its originality, with few details changed or restored from the way it left the factory line in 1952. Enthusiasts refer to these early Beetles as “split windows” due to the fact that their rear windows were made in two pieces to save costs. A year later, in 1953, Volkswagen began using a single, eggshaped rear window, and these editions are known as “oval windows.” Bill Goepper of Newport, Kentucky, is displaying his 1953 “Zwitter” Beetle, an interesting model made as a transition between the split windows of 1952 and earlier and the oval-window models made from 1953 to 1957. Roughly translated, “Zwitter” means “hybrid” in German. Befitting its name, Goepper’s Beetle has the body of a split window, yet the dash and interior of an oval window, as well as several unique Zwitter-only details. After the turmoil of WWII settled, it didn’t take long for the Beetle’s combination of reliability, affordability, and unique shape to find fans in America, and by the mid1960s, the Volkswagen Beetle was one of the unofficial cars of America’s youth culture. It didn’t hurt that in 1968 the Disney movie The Love Bug featured a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle named Herbie as its star. Albert Heiles of Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, brings an original Herbie, which appeared in The Love Bug and Herbie Rides Again. One of 10 VWs used in film production, this Beetle was originally a European spec 1959 VW Deluxe sedan, modified by Disney to look like a 1963 U.S. spec car and used as a remote-driven stunt car. And don’t miss the 1963 Volkswagen Beetle Herbie tribute car courtesy of Justin and Tom Schlacter, and Cincinnati Volkswagen and Porsche expert Mark Schlachter, who owns Metalkraft Coachwerkes, one of the nation’s foremost Volkswagen and Porsche restoration companies. SPECIALTY AWARDS

T

he Ault Park Concours honors the memory of our dear friend, Wilhelm “Bill” Spoerle, who passed away in November 2014. Born in Jagstfeld, Germany, Bill was head of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Foundation’s restoration department, having joined the staff in 1963. He had a passion for educating enthusiasts about the rare cars in the Speedway Museum’s collection and personally transported many historically significant cars to our show since 1998. Some of those exceptional vehicles included: • 1909 Buick that won the first race at Indianapolis (not 500 miles) • 1911 Marmon Wasp – first Indy 500 Winner • 1921 Duesenberg Murphy Special – winner of 1921 French Gran Prix and 1923 Indy 500 • 1939 Maserati Boyle Special – winner of 1939 & 1940 Indy 500 • 1965 LeMans winning Ferrari 250 LM Bill’s passing leaves a void in the automobile enthusiast community, and he will be greatly missed. As a tribute, this year’s Best of Featured Marque award will bear Bill Spoerle’s name and be presented by his daughter Anna Spoerle Cook.
