Reflecting on the Past and Moving Ahead with Confidence
Eric Hansen City of Mason Manager
The beginning of a New Year is a time for us to reflect upon the past year as we acknowledge our accomplishments, express gratitude for the partnerships we have formed, and strengthen the foundations that were developed to drive the future of the community. Welcome new Council members Ashley Chance and Kathy Grossmann. Best wishes to former Mayor and Council member David Nichols who after many years building Mason’s economic development reputation is focusing energy on new opportunities. We also extend our appreciation to Council member Jim Fox who filled a Council vacancy during 2015. And we welcome our newest Council member Diana K. Nelson. The following are just some of the highlights of 2015: • The City celebrated its Bicentennial with a year-long creative celebration to honor Mason’s rich history, the legacy of the past, the thriving prosperity of the present, and the bright future of the City. Proceeds from the City’s Bicentennial activities were directed to Common Ground, the Mason Park and Recreation Foundation’s all-inclusive park, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations. • First quarter of 2015 the City announced 4,000 new jobs and over a half billion in new
capital investment. • The City celebrated its five-year anniversary with TriHealth. The City in partnership with TriHealth is Building a Culture of Wellness in the Mason Community. Mason’s partnership with TriHealth has led to financial stability for the Community Center along with additional business recruitment and retention opportunities. • The new Mason Service Center located at 3900 State Route 741 was completed. This project has been extremely successful and has filled a long awaited need to better serve Mason residents. A new Service Center has been a City priority for many years. This was the first design-build project for the City. To help defer costs in-house staff performed much of the work saving the City over $500,000. Staff anticipates improvements in City services and response times from inherent efficiencies of the new Center. • Holocaust survivor Ms. Eva Moses Kor visited Mason on May 4. In 1944, at Auschwitz, Eva and her sister Miriam, 10-year old twins, became part of a group of children used as human guinea pigs in genetic experiments performed on them by Dr. Josef Mengele “The Angel of Death.” On May 4, Council members, special guests, Premier members of the Community Center, and others had the opportunity to hear the survival and forgiveness story of Ms. Kor. The City of Mason was excited to host this educational opportunity for the community. • Mason economic development recruitment and retention efforts had a banner year. More detailed information about these efforts can be found on pages 8 and 9.

Deerfield’s Rapid Growth Continues Deerfield continues to grow rapidly. Since 2000, our population ballooned 52%, from 25,000 to more than 38,000, and we’re expecting as many as 1,000 new residents each year over the next decade. Preparing for that growth requires careful planning and precise resource allocation. Each year in November, we’ve taken the opportunity to pause and reflect on the preceding year and make plans for the next. It’s been a good habit that’s been both beneficial and productive for our whole team. It’s allowed us to consider what’s worked and the challenges ahead. One clear sign of growth here has been the dramatic expansion of neighborhoods, with everything from single-family houses to townhomes, patio homes, apartments, and condominiums. A recent analysis by University of Cincinnati showed we’ve made good choices. Our focus on quality while expanding the variety of housing options has enhanced our inventory of homes while Chris Romano balancing the draw on local government and schools. Deerfield Township Many towns facing growth pressures lose control of their spending and borrow beyond their Vice President means to keep up. Here, our fiscal reserves are strong and we continue to operate within our means each year. We’ve cut our long-term debt by more than half since 2006, and have the highest credit rating available to any township in Ohio. We’ve been recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association for excellence in financial reporting since 2010. We’ve received the Ohio Auditor of State Award with Distinction in 2011 and 2014. Inside our organization, we’ve streamlined operations and reduced costs. With the cooperation of surrounding jurisdictions, we moved one of our “big rocks,” the I-71 Fields Ertel loop ramp, into the DONE column in 2015. We then shifted our attention to improving I-71 at Western Row and Innovation Way. Simultaneously, we’re expanding and adapting many of our roadways to handle increased volume and changing traffic patterns. We believe history will show these projects to be among our greatest contributions to regional mobility, prosperity, and quality of life. We recently opened the new, 27,000+-square-foot maintenance facility, which gets our stored equipment out of the weather, makes year-round maintenance easier, and extends the life of our equipment substantially. Looking forward, we’re implementing plans to cultivate commercial growth so we get the right kind, at the right time and place to strengthen our economy and enhance our quality of life. We’re evaluating expansions to our fire and police services to meet increasing demand, and we’re helping local businesses expand or improve their facilities to enhance their future as well as ours. We’ve got plenty of work ahead of us, but at the dawn of 2016, we’re happy to report that the future of Deerfield remains safe and prosperous with a high quality of life. 2 CenterPoint Spring 2016

On The Cover...Young at Heart Staying Active and Healthy In the Golden Years You’re invited to celebrate National Senior Health & Fitness Day on May 25, 2016, with Mason Community Center. Always the last Wednesday in May, it’s the largest annual health promotion event for older adults to raise awareness of the benefits of regular exercise to stay healthy and fit. Seniors 55 and older enjoy free Community Center admissions for the day including Forever Fit drop-in classes and the Bodies in Balance: Water class. Mason’s local seniors take advantage of many of the health and fitness programs offered at Mason Community Center. In celebration of National Senior Health & Fitness Day, seniors Irving (Irv) Bolter (92), Carolyn Fleenor (90), Evelyn Landen (93), and Mary Cimini (92) encourage you to stay active and join them at the Community Center.
IRV
A Florida resident for 23 years, Irv relocated to Maineville six years ago to be closer to his family, which includes four great-grandchildren. He joined Mason Community Center after his daughter told him about it and he’s never looked back. “I have more time to exercise now,” said Irv. “I’ve always walked from point A to point B—just like my uncle did—and in my 40s, I began running on my coffee break, but I never considered that to really be ‘exercise.’ I just stayed active. And now I use the bike every day I come to the Community Center.” When he’s not logging miles on a stationary bike or taking advantage of the nearby park for regular walks, you can find Irv in the Mason Senior Center playing bridge every Tuesday, Mahjong (a Chinese tile game) every Friday, or just socializing with other members. “What I like the most about the Community Center is the people. I’ve made a lot of friends here with other members and the staff,” said Irv. “It’s one of the nicest places I’ve ever been and even if I don’t feel like exercising, I can come here to just talk. It’s a good place to come to.”
EVELYN
A Mason area resident since 1951, Evelyn has always been very physically active—indeed, she was voted Most Athletic Girl in her high school class— and fondly remembers playing games like tennis, ping pong, basketball, dodgeball, kickball, hoist the green sail, and kick the can. Nowadays, you can find her at the Community Center on the cardiovascular equipment or taking Silver Sneakers or Forever Fit classes. And a few years ago, you could have even caught her on the rock climbing wall. “Back when I was 90, I tried climbing the rock wall with another 90-year-old,” said Evelyn. “We didn’t get very far—but it was fun.” “I don’t have any physical problems that I know of,” added Evelyn. “And I don’t consider myself to be an inspiration—I just feel it’s important to keep moving. If you don’t use it, you lose it; so I really come for my own well-being.”
Mary, originally from Fremont, Ohio, now resides in Mason and has been a member of the Community Center for 11 years, where she is very active with the center’s aquatic fitness classes. “I used to take more traditional land-based exercise classes,” said Mary. “But after my friends encouraged me to try water fitness, I finally gave it a go and I was hooked after the first class. It is a very welcoming and refreshing way to stay active and I also enjoy the social aspect as well. “Staying fit has allowed me to continue to live an active life,” Mary added. “I don’t need to use a cane and I appreciate the friendships I have made. I would encourage others who are interested in starting a fitness routine to just go to the pool and give it a try—it’s a wonderful way to stay fit.”
Are you interested in starting or changing your wellness routine? Stop in on Wednesday, May 25 to learn how we can help you get and stay active. Interested in a tour or joining Mason Community Center? Call 513.229.8555 or stop by the Member Services Desk today.
CAROLYN
One of 16 children and a West Virginia native, Carolyn moved to Blue Ash in 1962 where she had relatives. She joined the Community Center three years ago and swears that her regular walks around the lazy river have done more to help manage her chronic vertigo than any medication she’s ever taken. The Community Center not only meets fitness needs but social needs as well. The facility was selected to host Carolyn’s 90th birthday party and a Christmas party for water fitness participants the past three years. “I really come here for half exercise, half socialization,” said Carolyn. “Everyone here is very nice and supportive. They will help you out in any way needed—I’ve never met nicer people than the ones I’ve met here in the Buckeye state.”

2015 a Banner Year In Mason for Biohealth and Advanced Manufacturing Growth The City of Mason’s Economic Development strategy produced an unprecedented 2015, with new investment bringing 2,707 jobs and $501 million in investment in the fields of biohealth, bioscience, and advanced manufacturing. The trends shown below speak to the City of Mason’s success in establishing clusters, which, similar to Silicon Valley’s community of tech companies, are areas that are “home” to innovative businesses in the same or similar industries. Thriving clusters create a synergy that attracts more investment and innovators—employees as well as businesses—to Mason.
Two advanced manufacturing companies are showing continued, steady growth Intelligrated, one of the region’s and Mason’s largest private companies, announced the expansion of its Global Corporate Headquarters for the second time in two years. Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America, an international automotive supplier, announced the eighth expansion of their 556,000-square-foot North American Headquarters Campus since it opened in Mason 28 years ago. City leadership focuses on leveraging relationships with JobsOhio, REDI Cincinnati, local school districts, and
other regional partners to ensure businesses have the necessary resources to attract top talent and investment, which is another factor in their success. See the table on page 9 for a breakdown of investment, jobs, and square footage of the businesses that have chosen to expand or build new headquarters in Mason. Follow us on Twitter @Mason OHEcoDev for all of the latest New to Mason and the region, in 2016 FESTO will celebrate the completion of economic development news. their 250,000-sq.-ft. regional manufacturing and technology facility in Mason.
Four companies in the biohealth and bioscience fields either expanded or located to Mason, strengthening the Mason bioscience hub Eighty percent of job creation in 2015 in Mason was in the biohealth and bioscience sectors. Medical device manufacturer AtriCure, along with Assurex Health, Masters Pharmaceutical, and Include Fitness announced and/or moved into new Mason corporate headquarters facilities, while Procter & Gamble is doubling the footprint of its existing facility on its 240acre campus with the development of the state-of-the-art Beauty Innovation Center. Procter & Gamble’s move will bring the whole Cincinnati-based health and beauty technical communities together in a creative, dynamic environment that will drive capability and inspire innovation at this site for decades to come. All of these developments represent innovation investment in Mason that will house top researchers, scientists, inventors, and consumer experts in state-of-the-art facilities with labs, pilot plants, and creative spaces. The 2015 momentum has contributed measurable to robust regional cluster growth here in Mason and adds long-term economic sustainability. 8 CenterPoint Spring 2016
Mason saw the benefit of their P3 focus with the growth and corporate collaboration within its biohealth ecosystem as Assurex Health and startup IncludeFitness grow on the Mason Municipal Campus. In 2016, Assurex Health will finalize plans with Mason leadership for a new corporate headquarters in the rapidly developing biohealth cluster in the Oak Park district on Innovation Way.
AMason’s National Magazine Praises the City of Biohealth Cluster A news release announcing the grand opening of AtriCure’s headquarters in Mason in November prompted Site Selection Magazine, a leading national publication focused on corporate expansions, to publish an article profiling the City of Mason’s economic development success. The article, titled “Healthy Heartbeat: A new HQ from AtriCure is just the latest addition to a robust cluster in Mason, Ohio,” describes Mason’s approach to economic development, including infrastructure improvements, venture capital investment and talent attraction.
Reporter Adam Bruns writes: “Judged by the number of corporate life sciences investments in the past few years, Mason itself has arrived.” He goes on to profile entrepreneurial firms, such as Assurex Health and Seapine Software, highlighting their recent expansions and ease of attracting talent and capital investors. He ends the article on an upbeat note, stating, “City [of Mason] economic developers might even be tempted to borrow from the original marketing slogan for Kings Island when it opened its gates in 1972: ‘C’mon, Get Happy.’”
The article is featured on the Site Selection Magazine website, SiteSelection. com, which is visited by more than 31,000 unique monthly users. It was also featured prominently in the Site Selection Magazine e-mail newsletter called “Life Sciences Report,” which goes out to 48,000 business people in the C-Suite. To view the article, go to: siteselection. com/LifeSciences/2015/nov/clusters.cfm, or click on the Web Exclusives tab on SiteSelection.com to go to the Life Sciences Report, and then click on November 2015.

Public Works Update Irwin-Simpson Phase II, Roadway Widening Project
Deerfield Township Public Works Service Facility
Annual Road Maintenance
Deerfield Township is preparing to begin reconstruction on the west end of Irwin-Simpson Road, between Charleston Park Subdivision and Butler-Warren Road. The road widening will be similar to the project that was completed to the east, which widened the road from two to three lanes, and also constructed a new sidewalk on the north side of the road. We will also be constructing new sanitary sewer to serve the properties in that area, which currently do not have sanitary sewer. With the project, Irwin-Simpson Road will be closed from Charleston Park Drive to Butler-Warren Road. We anticipate the closure lasting from Spring through Fall 2016. Exact closure dates and detailed project information may be found at www.choosedeerfield.com. Motorists’ patience during this important project is very much appreciated.
Deerfield Township recently completed construction of your new Public Works Garage and Fleet Maintenance Facilty. These two buildings are located at 3378 Townsley Drive, where the old Fire Station 57 once was. The new buidings allow Township staff to house all of your Public Works fleet indoors, and provide a greater level of fleet maintenance to the overall Township fleet. Both of these new buildings were constructed through the use of Tax Increment Financing, which utilizes commercial property tax revenues as its funding mechanism. These funds are derived from various commercial properties around the township. This project enables more efficient service delivery, and greater life expectancy of equipment.
Highlights for 2016 include: • Construction of a dedicated right turn lane from Irwin-Simpson Road to Columbia Road • Milling and resurfacing of approximately four centerline roadway miles • Microsurface pavement treatment of approximately four centerline roadway miles • Crack sealing of approximatley three miles Based on a street’s condition, if it’s determined that a treatment is appropriate, it might receive reclamite, crack sealing, or a microsurfacing treatment within its respective life-cycle. Details will be avaliable on the Township’s website this spring. In addition to the roadway maintenance, we will also be performing sidewalk and storm sewer inspections, signage upgrades, and tree trimming on those streets that are scheduled to be resurfaced. Please feel free to contact the Public Works Department at 513.701.6958 to see the schedules and street listings this spring.
Deerfield’s Law Director, Tom Swope, Retires Tom Swope, former law director for Deerfield Township, officially retired on December 31, 2015, having served the Township as Law Director for just over 10 years. Mr. Swope, a graduate of the School of Law at the University of San Francisco, spent four years as a trial attorney in the San Francisco Regional Office of the National Labor Relations Board.
He then returned to Ohio and entered private practice. In his capacity as Deerfield’s Law Director, Mr. Swope had been employed by Frost Brown Todd, LLC. The primary responsibilities of a township law director are to provide advice to elected officials and to provide legal guidance in all matters pertaining to the township. “It has been a great pleasure serving Deerfield. The staff is very bright and results oriented. Deerfield has done a great job of land use planning, park development, and road improvements. The Fire
Department is first class. I have enjoyed working with elected officials who really care about the Deerfield residents. I very much enjoyed serving Deerfield Township,” said Mr. Swope. In retirement, Mr. Swope plans to spend more time with his grandchildren, travel, and play more golf. He hopes to remain active in a few community organizations and keep in contact with his friends at Frost Brown Todd and Deerfield Township. The Township’s new law director is Scott D. Phillips of Frost Brown Todd, LLC.
New Fire Engine Mason’s newest fire truck began servicing residents on December 7, 2015. Mason Fire crews have spent over 500 staff -hours in equipment placement and training. Equipped with 750 gallons of water, the truck has the capability to pump 2,000 gallons of water per minute, and is stocked with the necessary firefighting, EMS, rescue, and vehicle extrication equipment.

MASON CITY SCHOOLS
Three Questions with
MHS Orchestra Director
STEPHANIE JONES You can call her the founder. The founder of the Mason City School District’s renowned orchestra program. Fourteen years ago, district leaders hired Jones to build an orchestra program that would expand Mason City Schools’ commitment to the arts and encourage students’ creativity. In 2002, 70 Mason Intermediate sixth graders began orchestra for the first time. Today, the nationally recognized orchestra program spans grades 6-12 and counts over 1,200 students as members. And its founder was named the 2015-16 Ohio Strings Teacher Association School Teacher of the Year. Jones earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance degrees from Miami University. She also earned the Master of Music in Conducting from Messiah College in 2012. When not conducting her students, the Mason resident can be found spending time outdoors with her family or playing board games and music together. She and her husband, Dr. Brandon Jones, Associate Professor of Music at Wittenberg University, are the proud parents of two Comets—Cecilia, Class of 2025, and Alaina, Class of 2030. What has it been like to watch one of your babies, the Mason City Schools’ orchestra program, grow up? It has truly been an amazing and rewarding experience to have the opportunity to teach young people the power of music in this wonderful community. I am fortunate to have the opportunity every day to work with amazing students who are incredibly diligent, dedicated, generous, and kind. All of the successes of the Mason Orchestra program are a direct result of the hard work of these amazing young people. I can’t believe it has already been 14 years. It feels like just a few short years ago that the first class of sixth graders was in my classroom. They were the pioneers who led the way for the Mason Orchestra program’s success. They were the students who first put Mason Orchestras on the musical
map by getting accepted as a freshmen class to perform at the 2007 OMEA Professional Conference, as well as being selected to perform at the National Orchestra Cup in New York City in 2009. Now, just eight short years later, the Mason Orchestras have competed with great acclaim and success many times at the state and national levels, including the premier festival for high school orchestras, the ASTA National Orchestra Festival. Some of the most memorable experiences over the years revolve around the collaborations with amazing professional musicians. These opportunities have crossed musical genres ranging from collaborations with professional orchestras like the Cincinnati Symphony to modern mixed genre
groups like Barrage, Section Quartet, and Time for Three. I am still in touch with many of our Mason Orchestra alumni who are now mature young adults, contributing to our society as doctors, teachers, journalists, chemists, artists, biologists, military, parents...the list is endless. What makes me most happy is to hear from students, many years after they graduate, and hear about how music still affects their lives and has had a profound impact, no matter their career choice. My primary goal of being a music educator is to teach students the power of music so that they can understand, know, and love it for the rest of their lives.
Why is music so important for children and teens’ development? Music gives words to our innermost feelings and emotions and is an outlet for personal expression. Music is what makes us human. Learning a musical instrument and participating in a music ensemble teaches important life skills that contribute to enriching the education of the whole child. Music utilizes both hemispheres of the brain simultane-
ously—the logical and analytical left brain, as well as the creative and innovative right brain. Creativity and imaginative innovation are critical skills in today’s global economy. Music study also teaches students important skills for success such as self-confidence, problem-solving, time management, leadership, discipline, and working cooperatively.
Attaining skills on a musical instrument opens many doors of possibility for students. The more they learn, the more successful they feel, which in turn raises their self-confidence. The better they become at their instrument, the more self-empowered they become in order to unlock the creativity and innovation that is inside each of us.
What’s your favorite piece of music, and why? Asking me to pick my favorite piece of music is like asking me to pick my favorite child! A surprise to many of my students is my vast love of many different genres and styles of music. My students always find it intriguing when they dis-
cover I listen to music beyond orchestral classical music. If we are talking about orchestral music, some of my favorites are: Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring; Beethoven’s Symphonies No. 3 and No. 9; Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.
4, Romeo and Juliet and Serenade for Strings; Shostakovich Symphony No. 5; Dvorak Cello Concerto and String Serenade; Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherezade; Bach Cello Suites…. Oh wow, I could really go on for a while! Spring 2016

Reflecting on the Past and Moving Ahead with Confidence (continued from page 2) • Work on the I-71 full interchange continued throughout 2015. In August, work began on the Kings Island Drive Improvement Project and should be complete by the end of 2016. Next step in the process will be the Columbia Road Relocation. This part of the project is designed to better support traffic flow on Western Row Road by relocating Columbia Road and improving the northbound I-71 off ramp. Extending the distance between the I-71 off ramp intersection and Columbia Road and improving turn lanes will allow travelers to move more easily through this area. This phase of the project is fully funded and construction will begin in Spring 2016 and anticipated to be complete in November 2017. To learn more about this project visit www. imaginewesternrow.com • Mason continued its reputation for providing excellent customer service as staff throughout the organization received numerous compliments from residents and business partners. • Moody’s Investor Services reaffirmed the City’s Aaa bond rating for new bond issuance for the Western Row Interchange
and Service Center. This is the highest rating available and particularly rare for government units to achieve. • The City celebrated Mason Innovation Week, an event sponsored by global automation technology leader Festo, as its gift to the City for the Bicentennial celebration. Throughout the week, Festo Bionic Learning Network representatives demonstrated their bio-inspired robotic animals, the SmartBird and BionicOpter, to area elementary, high school, and college students and the Mason corporate community. The event demonstrated how unique public-private partnerships can advance community education and promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programming. • As part of promoting Mental Health Awareness Month, the City partnered with Linder Center of Hope and Assurex on a number of events promoting mental health awareness. The capstone event was a Community Education Day hosted at the Manor House. • In October Council renamed Heritage Oak Park to Sundin Fields at Heritage Oak Park in honor of Mrs. Ginny Sun-

din. Ginny has volunteered for the City of Mason since 1974, provided more than 40 years of service and advocacy of Parks and Recreation, served as the Park Board Chair since December 12, 1977 and has never missed a Park Board meeting in that time. She has organized many “first” recreation programs for the City of Mason, including an Easter Egg Hunt, SAY Soccer, instructional tennis, and softball leagues and was recognized by the National Recreation and Park Association for her dedication with its Citizen-Board Member Branch Award in 2003. Heritage Oak Park, the City’s largest park with 79 acres, was dedicated in 1976 in honor of the country’s bicentennial. Continued revitalization of the park will continue throughout 2016. I am grateful for what the organization has accomplished during 2015. I anticipate another busy and exciting year for 2016. The City will continue its reputation of building partnerships that provide new and enhanced benefits for residents and residents should feel confident in the direction the community is headed.

KRisknowfor Your Heart Disease
Take Important Steps to Assess Your Cardiovascular Risk and Prevent Disease
What is your risk for heart and vascular disease? Heart disease continues to be the number one killer of Americans, surpassing breast cancer, prostate cancer, and lung cancer. The most common cardiovascular problems are heart attack and stroke, but there are also heart rhythm problems, heart failure (trouble with breathing and exertion) and valve issues. Being aware of factors that increase your risk of developing heart disease is the first step to preventing or slowing the progression of disease.
Assess Your Risk for Heart Disease New assessment tools allow you to evaluate your risk of certain heart events 10 years from now and across your lifetime. “Start with your primary care physician or your cardiologist to learn about an assessment and when you should have one. You can also go to the Internet for tools, if you know your cholesterol numbers and blood pressure,” says TriHealth Heart Institute Cardiologist Asimul Ansari, M.D.
Online risk estimators for heart disease include: • Risk Assessment Tool for Your 10-Year Risk of Having a Heart Attack, from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (http://cvdrisk.nhlbi.nih.gov/) • ASCVD (atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease) Risk Estimator, from the American College of Cardiology (http://tools.acc.org/ASCVD-Risk-Estimator/) 14 CenterPoint Spring 2016
Ansari recommends having a risk assessment by your 40s—or sooner if you smoke, or have a family history of heart disease, diabetes, or high cholesterol. “The body has a lot of reserve built in, so frequently people don’t present with symptoms until disease is fairly advanced. If we can identify your risks early, we can tailor your treatment to address and reduce risk factors,” Ansari says. “Preventing disease is much better than having to treat disease,” he adds. He notes that having a family history of heart disease doesn’t mean that you are destined to have the same problems. “With screenings and imaging techniques to identify risk factors and early intervention, you don’t necessarily have to develop disease,” he continues. He says that a calcium score and a blood test called C-reactive protein can be used independently or together to predict coronary artery disease. Your calcium score is a measurement of the calcium in your coronary arteries obtained with a non-invasive CT scan of your heart. These tests are generally reserved for people over the age of 40 who have at least one risk factor and are not on aggressive medications.
Steps to a Healthier Heart Whether you are working to prevent heart disease or you already have disease and want to keep it from progressing, Ansari, in accordance with the American Heart Association, recommends general guidelines for optimal heart health: • Exercise at least 150 minutes per week. • Don’t smoke. If you do smoke, quit.
• Assess your weight using the body mass index scale (BMI), an estimate of your body fat based on height and weight. Strive for a “normal” BMI of 18.5 to 24.9. • Keep blood pressure below 120/80. • Have fasting blood glucose less than 100 milligrams/deciliter. • Keep total cholesterol less than 200 milligrams/deciliter. • Eat a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, fiber-rich grains, fish twice a week, sodium less than 1,500 milligrams per day, and minimal sugar-sweetened desserts and beverages. “Have a mentality of doing this for the long-term, and focus on realistic, achievable goals,” Ansari says. “Create a support system of family, friends, and healthcare providers to help you. The end result will be a healthier heart and a higher quality of life.”
Asimul Ansari, M.D., is a medical cardiologist with a special interest in cardiac diagnostics. He practices with the TriHealth Heart Institute and sees patients at Bethesda Arrow Springs in Lebanon, Bethesda Butler Hospital in Hamilton, and Bethesda North Hospital in Montgomery. Dr. Ansari is a resident of Mason, where he lives with his wife, Asma Ansari, M.D., TriHealth dermatologist.
Landscape Lighting Dangers Each spring, the City of Mason Fire Department responds to several mulch fires that involve landscape lighting. These fires tend to occur in the early spring when fresh mulch is being laid in mulch beds. In most cases, the landscape lights are found to have mulch covering the actual bulb. When mulch is first put down it is very light and fluffy. When combining those properties with a heat source (the uncovered bulb plus warmer days) and wind, a rapid spreading mulch fire can occur. Mulch fires that go unnoticed can easily spread to taller vegetation and inside your home. The City of Mason Fire Department would like to encourage all residents to be cognizant of this potential hazard to their safety and homes. Ensuring that all light fixtures are clear of any foreign debris and have protective covers in place can save lives and property.

HS’s Toni Bizzarro Named All-American
Mason High School soccer standout Toni Bizzarro was named a 2015 All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. A four-year starting keeper for the Comets, Bizzarro was named the GMC Girls Soccer Player of the Year in 2015. She was named a First Team All-GMC honoree in 2013, 2014, and 2015, and has committed to play soccer at Xavier University next fall. Bizzarro had 13 shutouts this season to lead the conference and the city. She holds the Mason career record for shutouts with 49.5 in 86 games and played in two State Championship matches. She carries a GPA of 4.7 and is an active member of National Honor Society. “Toni’s work ethic and commitment to
being the best have been evident since she walked on our campus as a freshman,” said Mason head coach Andrew Schur. “She has never been outworked and demands the best from herself and her teammates. Toni competes in the classroom as well as on the field. The Mason soccer community and coaching staff have been blessed to have Toni for the last four years. Her recognition as an NSCAA All-American is the highest honor a high school soccer player can receive. It is a fitting end to an incredible career.” All-Americans and their accomplishments were celebrated and recognized at the NSCAA All-America Luncheon held during the 2016 NSCAA Convention in Baltimore.

How Can I Get My Child Ready for Kindergarten? The most important thing to prepare for kindergarten is to help your child develop a positive attitude about school and the wonderful things he/she will be learn-
ing. Enjoy the time spent with your child while stimulating learning by: • reading to your child and sharing picture books every day develops an interest in reading; • practice writing his/her name with crayons, pencils or markers; • counting with picture books, snacks (pretzels, fish crackers, etc.) or while setting the table for dinner; • reading and enjoying alphabet books and recognizing letters of the alphabet in everyday life (ex. restaurants, cereal boxes, road signs, etc.); • recognizing, naming, and drawing basic shapes; • practicing your phone number and address; • coloring; • cutting.
orld Down Syndrome Day The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati (DSAGC) serves the growing number of families in Butler and Warren counties of Cincinnati. The Butler/Warren Community Group welcomes all families with a loved one with Down syndrome and offers local activities with a meaningful network of others in nearby school systems and communities. Their diverse age group stays active with monthly Mom’s Night Out, playgroups, family events, educational/ informational workshops, and a World Down Syndrome Day celebration. Currently they have well over 200 families involved. World Down Syndrome Day is a global awareness day celebrated on March 21st of each year repre-
senting the three copies of the 21st chromosome in people with Down syndrome. This celebration allows families to gather and enjoy time with other families in similar circumstances to reenergize. The Butler/Warren Community Group’s annual celebration will once again be at Mason Community Center with diverse
amenities for all ages. If you would like to attend, please contact Amy Iten at 513.492.8864. If you are interested in learning more, please visit www.dsagc.com, Facebook—DSAGC Butler/Warren Community Group, or email ButlerWarren@ dsagc.com.
What is Down Syndrome? Down syndrome is a genetic condition—the most commonly occurring chromosomal incident—that creates a wide range of developmental delays and physical disabilities. It occurs in 1 out of every 691 births and affects people of all backgrounds. Babies typically receive 23 chromosomes from their mother and 23 from their father, but a baby with Down syndrome will have three copies of the 21st chromosome instead of two. That is why Down syndrome is also called Trisomy 21. Every cell in your body will contain one extra copy of chromosome 21.

Kings Schools C.A.R.E. Embracing diversity and creating a welcoming environment for all Kings students was the motivation for Kings High School teachers Goldie Dustin and Wendy Loudermilk to create a newly formed organization called C.A.R.E. Club (Culture, Awareness, Recognition, Ethnicity). The enthusiasm, passion, and commitment of these two dedicated teachers is palpable. Clearly, they both love their students and respect each of them as individuals. “Each student has a voice,” said Dustin, an American History teacher. “Each student matters,” he added. C.A.R.E is a student-run organization and even though it is under the watchful eye of Dustin and Loudermilk, they insist that the nearly 40 student-members are the true leaders of this club. Like many schools in the surrounding districts, there has been a considerable upswing in population diversity. Today, Kings Local Schools embraces an almost
12.5% minority population. The Hispanic population at Kings High School is 5% of the total student body. C.A.R.E. welcomes all students. Its goal is to improve diversity awareness and ensure that all Kings students are “global citizens.” All students are welcome to attend meetings and are encouraged to bring someone with them to each meeting. “Education is key,” said Loudermilk, a Spanish teacher. “This group wants to encourage friendships, team building, and acceptance among all of our student body,” she added.
The mission statement of C.A.R.E Club is “Increase Awareness, Step Toward Acceptance, and Achieve Equality.” The club meets monthly and membership numbers keep growing! As the group continues to grow, they hope to develop their Pay it Forward project, where each student goes out of their way to help someone who looks different than them. And they hope to work on a number of community service projects. The long term goal of C.A.R.E. Club is to see this kind of effort starting in the elementary schools in the district, so that diversity awareness can begin at young age.

Six years ago, Mason Community Center brought Yonce Daniels on as a gymnastics coach and started a gymnastic program with nine participants. The Community Center program continues to grow with over 50 competitors on the Mason Twisters team and more than 300 participants in the gymnastics program. Yonce started gymnastics at the age of 5 and began elite gymnastics training in 6th grade. She won the national state champion title while she was with Tallahassee Tumbling Tots and was offered an all-around gymnastics scholarship to the University of Iowa. College is where she learned her love of coaching while assisting in gymnastic classes and
camps for younger children. Yonce then joined a professional gymnastics circuit with Coach Kurt Thomas before owning Gym Express in West Chester. Yonce now enjoys coaching at the Community Center where she says, “We are an up and growing competition team.” Mason Twisters currently compete in Levels 2-6 with participants training to compete in Levels 7 & 8, but are still cleaning up and polishing their routines. Hannah Dorfmueller, an acclaimed ballet artist, and her husband Steve Beirens assist in fine tuning the Twisters choreography including jumps, turns, and technical skills. Even though the Twisters practice hard to compete hard, Yonce said, “All kids on the com-
petition team are on honor roll. School comes first.” The Twisters have a competition season that runs September through April with meets all over the Midwest and one in the Bahamas. “Places from all over contact us to see if the Twisters will compete in their meets,” said Yonce and she “wants the kids to travel to get their name out there and have the girls seen by other teams and colleges.” The Community Center goal is to attend meets in places like Texas, California, and Nevada as the team progresses. Want to be evaluated to join the Mason Twisters or start in the gymnastic program? Call Mason Community Center at 513.229.8555.
