The 2015 Road to Singapore is officially underway with all eyes set on the ultimate prize, the Billie Jean King Trophy awarded annually to the champion at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global. The Road to Singapore is a season-long campaign that will see the stars of the WTA through their journey from the beginning of the season right to its culmination at the WTA Finals in Singapore. The year-long quest to qualify for the WTA Finals travels through 55 events staged in 33 countries with the Top 8

Despite the fact that the 2015 WTA Finals are six months away, every point, every match and every tournament impacts the final standings on the Road to Singapore Leaderboard. The 2015 WTA Finals will feature the Top 8 singles and doubles players in the world competing in a round-robin event. WELCOME

Welcome to the

2015 Western & Southern Open!

W

WE APPRECIATE YOU JOINING US THIS YEAR AND HOPE YOU HAVE AS MUCH FUN AS

our entire staff does putting this event together. We take great pride in this week and love to roll out the red carpet for the fans. It has been a good while since the first serve of our tournament at the Avondale Athletic Club, present day home of Xavier University. More than 115 years in fact! We’ve evolved from those grass courts to hard courts, and moved a bit further north on Interstate 71, but in many ways the event remains the same. The best players come each year to play the highest level of tennis in front of some of the savviest fans in the world. That rich history has established a city and tournament that celebrates the great sport of tennis. We’ve learned that through the great sport of tennis, the tournament can make a big impact in other arenas. This year I’m proud to announce the Paul and Carolyn Flory Fund, a collaborative effort to raise money to fight cancer. Thanks to a generous $1 million gift from Western & Southern, the fund benefits the most urgent needs of the Barrett Cancer Center here in Cincinnati. But our job has only begun, and you can help us make a difference. We’ve set aggressive goals for the campaign and know you, our fans, are up for the challenge. I’m asking you to visit FloryFund.com—from your phone, tablet, or computer—to learn more about the endeavor and to make a donation. Over his 35-plus years as tournament director and chairman, Paul Flory never drew a paycheck. Let’s compensate Paul by giving, in his memory, to a cause that will truly make a difference. OK, I’ve taken enough of your time! Get out there and enjoy all of the tennis and entertainment around the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Thank you for being a wonderful fan and joining us this year at the Western & Southern Open. Sincerely,

Elaine Bruening Chief Executive Officer, Western & Southern Open

WELCOME

Cincy Welcome

O

ON BEHALF OF THE UNITED STATES TENNIS ASSOCIATION, IT IS MY PLEASURE TO

welcome you to the 2015 Western & Southern Open. This tournament is annually one of the top stops on both the men’s and women’s pro tours, as it is one of only five events in the world that feature an ATP Masters 1000 men’s event and a WTA Premier 5 women’s event during the same week. That elite status means that the Open always attracts the top names in the game, providing a whole lot of excitement for the great tennis fans of Cincinnati. The Western & Southern Open is this country’s oldest professional tennis tournament still held in its original city. It began as the Cincinnati Open in 1899, and throughout its existence it has provided a stage for many of the greatest players in the history of the sport to showcase their remarkable talents. Indeed, the list of those who have won here reads like a “Who’s Who?” of our sport, and last year’s champs—Roger Federer and Serena Williams—only added to that long tradition of Hall of Fame talents who’ve triumphed here. And while great champions have certainly helped to build this event’s legacy of greatness, just as important to its long-running success are the legions of great fans who turn out every year to support it. Last year the event set an all-time attendance record of 191,752, and it will be looking to better that mark again this year. This is a tournament that brings together great players, a worldclass venue, and a worldwide fan base—and that all adds up to an unbeatable experience. The Western & Southern Open also is an important stop on the Emirates Airline US Open Series, and that’s why all of us at the USTA are thrilled to be a partner in continuing to enhance this one-of-a-kind event. And for all the on-court thrills it provides, it’s important also to note that the Open has become a model for giving back to its community, as over the last few decades it has contributed more than $9 million to local charities, including the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Barrett Cancer Center, and Tennis for City Youth. I’d like to thank everyone involved in putting on this wonderful event, especially the more than 1,300 dedicated volunteers who log thousands of hours to ensure that all goes smoothly. And a special thanks to all of you passionate tennis fans from here in Cincinnati and around the world who have helped to make this tournament the remarkable success that it is. Enjoy the Western & Southern Open! Katrina M. Adams USTA Chairman, CEO, and President

players, coaches, and fans of the ATP championship tournament. We are a city of 32,000 people and more than 900 businesses with deep international ties in Mason’s 18 square miles. Mason has nurtured the marriage between tourism and traditional business development along with publicprivate partnerships to make the City of Mason a pacesetter within the Cincinnati region. We have worked hard to develop a reputation for being a family-friendly city that is committed to the success of our business community. Over the last decade, Mason has become home to more domestic and foreign companies and has one of the region’s largest complements of international businesses. This past year we have attracted record levels of new investment both from international companies and innovation sector companies. Overall business investment exceeds the previous three years with more than $500 million in announced projects and 2,700 new jobs. Companies like German-based Festo, Procter & Gamble, Intelligrated, Assurex Health, Lindner Center of Hope, Mitsubishi Electric Automotive, and Masters Pharmaceutical are a snapshot of the strong economic action happening here. The tournament is a big part of our success story, as it brings more than 200,000 fans to Mason each year to watch the world’s top men and women professional tennis athletes. The economic impact and global recognition for Mason and the region is significant. The event is just part of the repertoire of activities, programs, and venues that add to the quality of life for our residents and businesses. For 10 days Mason is the world stage for one of the most prestigious events in tennis—the Western & Southern Open. I invite you to explore our neighborhoods, parks, golf courses, community center, schools, and business climate to see why Mason is the hot spot for innovation, partnership, and new companies and residents alike. WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN // 2015

WELCOME

Dear Tennis Fans, ON BEHALF OF ATP IT IS MY PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU TO THE WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN, ONE OF NINE elite ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments on the Tour. The Western & Southern Open has established itself as one of the biggest tournaments on the ATP World Tour, offering a fantastic platform for our players to showcase their talents on a world stage. This tournament was first held at Avondale Athletic Club more than a century ago and has grown impressively into the world-class event it is today. Last year’s tournament, which saw Swiss superstar Roger Federer capture his 80th career singles title, set an attendance record of more than 190,000 fans. The tournament continues to grow from year to year and is more popular than ever. This year, fans will once again be treated to world-class action as the best players across the globe converge on Cincinnati in a bid to capture one of the most prestigious titles in tennis, and 1000 Emirates ATP Rankings points on offer for the champion. Much interest will once again surround Novak Djokovic and his bid to make history by winning the Western & Southern Open, becoming the first singles player to capture all nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles to complete the so-called Career Golden Masters. The fact that no singles player in history has done that just shows you what an achievement it would be. The competition will be as tough as ever, with the likes of Federer, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka, and Rafael Nadal all bidding to win one of the biggest titles on the Tour. I’d like to extend my best wishes to Tournament Director Vince Cicero and his organizing team for another fantastic event. I would also like to thank Western & Southern as title sponsor of the event for an impressive 14th year. The ATP World Tour is enjoying unprecedented success, with record audiences on-site, on television, and online, thanks to this incredible generation of players as well as the strength of our global platform of tournaments. We thank you for your support of the ATP World Tour and this event in particular. We hope you enjoy all the action as the drama unfolds throughout the week. The 2015 ATP World Tour features 62 events in 31 countries, culminating at the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals at The O2 in London in November. We invite you to follow us all season long on our new flagship website at www.ATPWorldTour.com. Best wishes, Chris Kermode ATP Executive Chairman and President

TIMELINE

LOOKING BACK gg A PROUD & STORIED TENNIS TRADITION. BEFORE THERE WAS A ROSE BOWL, before Army first played Navy on the gridiron, before baseball’s first World Series, before the first Indy 500, and decades before golf’s Masters, the best players in tennis were congregating in the southwest corner of Ohio for a very special tournament. That tournament, at first called the Cincinnati Open, is alive and well to this day, and its 116-year run in the Queen City makes it the oldest tournament in the United States played in its original city.

The Avondale Athletic Club hosts the first Cincinnati Open. The tournament attracts the finest players from all over the country. This location is now occupied by Xavier University. The Clubhouse was the university’s first student center.

The tournament thrives and the list of winners features some legendary tennis names, including George Lott, Bill Tilden, Bobby Riggs, and Bill Talbert among the men, and Ruth Sanders Cordes and Clara Louise Zinke among the women.

A $15,000 professional tournament is held in conjunction with the amateur tournament. It is the first combination professional/ amateur tournament in the world.

Financial stress causes the women’s draw to be eliminated, and for the first and only time, the tourney is played entirely indoors (at the downtown Cincinnati Convention Center). This is the first year that donations are made to Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Despite the financial trouble, $15,000 is donated to Children’s. Since then, more than $8 million has been donated to this worthy cause. The tournament is responsible for more than $9 million in charitable donations over the years.

Paul Flory signs on as tournament director, marking a turning point in the success of the event. He enlists the co-sponsorship of the Cincinnati Enquirer and Taft Broadcasting (now a part of Clear Channel Communications).

The tournament solidifies its relationship with the Association of Tennis Professionals. Also, the tournament moves to its current site in Mason.

Construction is completed on a new stadium in Mason. It is one of only three tennis-only stadiums in the United States at the time.

The tournament joins the new ATP Tour on its highest level. More than 1,500 seats are added to Center Court, as are eight new luxury skyboxes, four hospitality suites, and a new covered patio lounge.

A permanent Court #3 is added, making the Open the only event outside the Grand Slams with three permanent show courts.

The tournament celebrates its 100th birthday and adds a museum to the tennis complex.

Cincinnati is successful in getting back on the WTA Tour. The event purchases a small tournament from Bol, Croatia, which is moved to Cincinnati for the 2004 season.

The women’s tournament is upgraded to a top-tier event. Construction begins on a new 52,000-square-foot West Building, which includes a new player lounge and dining area, locker rooms, press box, six new luxury suites, and 750 covered loge seats. At the end of the 2010 tournament, the building is dedicated and named the Paul Flory Player Center, in honor of the tournament chairman. Flory passed away in 2013.

BEST ON CL AY 91.9% - Nadal’s career winning percentage, best ever; Djokovic 79.6%; Federer 76.2%; Murray 67.2%

Neither Nadal, Djokovic, nor Murray beats him in straight sets more than 45% of the time.

BEST ON HARD COURT 83.3% - Djokovic’s career winning percentage, best ever; Federer 83.1%; Murray 77.9%; Nadal 77.5%

The hard courts in Mason elicit the best level from the very best players—Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray have ruled these arenas for eight years, letting no one else lift the Western & Southern Open trophy and few even get near it. Federer, Nadal, and Murray have had a stranglehold on Cincinnati glory, winning the last eight years, while Djokovic has made the final four times (and counting). And if the Serb makes it back to the championship match this year, watch out—he is riding the longest Masters 1000 finals winning streak in the Open Era, capturing all 12 title matches he has played dating back to the fall of 2012. Will his streak continue here? M I L E S TO NE S I N M A SO N • As an emerging threat in 2006, Murray got his first win over a World No.1 player when he defeated Roger Federer here in the second round. It was Federer’s only loss that year to a player other than Nadal. • Federer won the 2012 Western & Southern Open without dropping serve—an underrated feat that no player has accomplished since then. The run included a 6–0 set against Djokovic in the final. • Nadal has won more Masters 1000 tournaments than any player in history, but his résumé was missing a final appearance at just one event—Cincinnati— until he captured the title in 2013. • Next? If Djokovic claims his first Western & Southern Open this year, he will become the first man in history to win all Masters 1000 tournaments.

BEST SERVER 88% - Federer’s pack-leading percentage of service games won; Nadal 86%; Djokovic 85%; Murray 82%

BEST RETURNER Many consider Djokovic to be the best returner of all time. But Murray earns the most break points per set, on average, at nine—and Nadal wins the most return games of the bunch, at 33%.

2012 AUSTRALIAN OPEN, final, Djokovic def. Nadal, 5–7, 6–4, 6–2, 6–7 (5–7), 7–5

THE MATCH I REMEMBER THAT MIND-BLOWING NADAL–FEDERER WIMBLEDON FINAL OF 2008—WIDELY CONSIDERED THE GREATEST MATCH OF ALL TIME—IS JUST ONE OF MANY DOOZIES THE BIG FOUR HAVE PRODUCED. TENNIS INSIDERS SHARE THEIR FAVORITE CLASHES.

Jon Sports Illustrated executive editor Wertheim and senior writer and Tennis Channel commentator 2012 SUMMER OLYMPICS, gold-medal match, Murray def. Federer, 6–2, 6–1, 6–4 This obviously wasn’t a major, but it was a pretty big part of the Big Four landscape. Murray was coming off a winnable Wimbledon final where, despite the immense pressure, he was right there when the roof turned it into an indoor match, then he broke down at the trophy presentation. Five weeks to the day later, he was back on the same court, versus the same opponent. Federer had played that long, taxing semifinal against Juan Martin del Potro, so Murray caught him at something other than fresh. Plus, the Olympics going on around the country took some of the spotlight off Murray. He had never played at Wimbledon [the venue] with so little pressure or disruption. Everything worked out—the weather, the conditions, having an easier semi than Roger. When he won, he was the country’s hero of the Olympics. It was the perfect triumph without the usual pressure. The match ended up making it easier for Murray to win Wimbledon the next year, so even though it isn’t on his Grand Slam record, when we reflect on Murray’s career, this is a huge plot point.

There are a couple matches I can’t forget. Miami 2004 was the first time I saw Rafa play Roger. [It was the pair’s first meeting; Federer, 22, had captured the No. 1 ranking a month prior, and Nadal, 17, was ranked No. 36.] I was coaching Roddick, so I was there to scout Federer, who hadn’t yet lost a match that year. And all of a sudden, this young guy is playing lights-out. I’d seen him play a little bit when he was 15 and at the Australian Open that year. But this was the first time I’d sat down and watched him. I was thinking, “Wow, this young guy is good.” It left a tremendous impression on me. That Djokovic–Nadal final, at six hours, not finishing until 2 a.m., when both of them couldn’t even really sit afterward—the quality was just outrageous.

13 // Whose idol was Pete Sampras?

The match I remember the most might be the worst match ever played among them. The fourth of Rafael Nadal’s nine French Open titles punctuated his dominance at Roland Garros. He won the 2008 final over Roger Federer in the shortest title match in tournament history. Mind you, this was not Federer at his absolute best—he had suffered through injury and illness for most of the year—but still, it was Roger Federer, a player already clearly in the conversation as the best ever. And he was being toyed with. This was LeBron being held scoreless in a playoff game. This was Brady throwing five picks without a touchdown pass in a Super Bowl. This was Roger Federer being manhandled to the point that it was almost cruel, with the beating so severe that Federer actually apologized to the fans afterward for winning just four games. Some matches are memorable for their length, or for their closeness. This match is most memorable to me because even though it was played by two of the greatest ever, one player was so clearly more dominant over the other.

HOT SHOTS BECAUSE LIFE IS TOO SHORT NOT TO TRY THE SWINGING VOLLEY. B Y // M E G A N F E R N A N D E Z

gg RAISE YOUR HAND if you get an itch to hit the courts after watching the pros play. We’ll even cop to pretending we’re facing our favorite player in the Western & Southern final, surrounded by a crowd cheering wildly for the hometown underdog. But it’s not a stretch to take a swing at the game’s new shots, part of the modern pro’s arsenal. Go ahead, try these four as-seen-on-TV shots at home—but maybe not on match point.

THE TWEENER Back in the 1990s, a “between the legs” forehand was known as the “Sabatwini” for its most common practitioner, Argentinian star Gabriela Sabatini. Even then, it was mostly a trick shot, high-flash and lowpercentage. But at the 2009 US Open, Roger Federer made the tweener immortal on YouTube when he zinged one by Novak Djokovic for the passing shot of the century. These days, pros pull it out of their bags on a weekly basis. Success is all about timing, says Kathy Rinaldi, former No. 7 player in the world and now a USTA national coach for women’s tennis. It becomes an option when you have overclosed the net after failing to put away a volley. If your opponent lobs you, run toward the back of the court, keeping the ball directly in front of you and switching to a continental grip en route. Get in position by standing directly over the ball, leading with the leg on your non-dominant side. Let the ball drop down by your ankles before taking a cut; try to hit it right before the second bounce. Swing the racket with the edge of the frame pointing to the court, then snap your wrist just before contact—and snap hard to go for a winner. “It’s a last-resort shot,” Rinaldi says, but even her students practice it. To do so, drop a ball right in front of you, then progress to tossing it a few feet out.

THE SWINGING VOLLEY Where has the overhead “smash” gone? The bestnamed shot in tennis is almost an endangered species now that professionals have adopted the swinging volley as their preferred put-away. You’ll never see Maria Sharapova hit a standard overhead anymore; she lets the ball drop closer to her ponytail and hits a monster forehand instead. “Top players look to take time away from the opponent and play this shot with an aggressive court position,” says Anibel Aranda, a USTA national coach for women’s tennis. “It’s like a forehand or backhand, but you take it out of the air” instead of letting it bounce. You can’t be a 21st-century player without this shot in your repertoire. The optimal time to try a swinging volley is when your opponent is scrambling on defense, or hits a high ball in the middle of the court and you’re in an offensive position on top of the baseline. Quickly move forward to the service line. “You need a good unit turn with a very short backswing to find good timing,” Aranda says. “Keeping your eyes on the ball and adjusting your feet is important.” Hit the ball between your shoulder and waist and accelerate the racket head to increase spin, which helps keep the ball in.

THE SQUASH SHOT Andy Roddick popularized this defensive “chop shot” borrowed from its namesake racket sport. “The squash shot is used to save balls and to stay in points when your opponent is attacking,” Aranda says. “It’s a last-moment resource that can help players put an extra ball in the court. Players that try to cover a good amount of court and play a good defensive game develop the squash shot.” If you’re a fighter who relies on defense, this is a great shot to practice. Start by opening the racquet face, and slice the ball back into the court with an extrawristy motion. It should result in a low shot that will land deep in the court. If your opponent is attacking the net, it will make his or her contact point on the volley below the tape. That shot is unlikely to produce a winner, so make sure to recover and be ready to stay in the point.

SCOUT THE SHOT Besides Sharapova, aggressive WTA players looking for the swinging volley include Serena Williams, Camila Giorgi, Lauren Davis, and Alison Riske.

SCOUT THE SHOT Victoria Azarenka, Serena Williams, and Novak Djokovic are famous for hitting returns early.

T H E E A R LY R E T U R N “Court positioning is very important in the game these days,” Rinaldi says. “People are more offensive. They are taking the [serve] returns early to get the first strike at the ball, to try to get control of the point.” To ease this into your game, start practicing it on second serves. As your opponent tosses the ball, take a few quick steps into the court and split-step well inside the baseline. Shorten your backswing and hit the ball “on the rise,” or as it’s on the way up. It will feel rushed at first, but keep practicing—it’s the best way to attack a weak second serve. As it becomes more natural, take the strategy up a notch by trying to read your opponent’s serve. During the match, pay attention to where he or she likes to serve on big points, or on each side of the court. Anticipation will give you an edge with the early return. Just watch your court positioning after you hit the ball, and don’t get caught in no-man’s land.

INTERVIEW

TODD MARTIN

gg FROM GROWING UP IN THE MIDWEST TO THE US OPEN FINALS, TODD MARTIN SPEAKS ABOUT THE EARLY YEARS, PLAYING TENNIS, AND BECOMING BOTH COACH AND CEO. INTERVIEW BY PETE HOLTERMANN // INTRO BY BENJAMIN SNYDER

I

IN AN ERA WHEN U.S. MEN’S PLAYERS DOMINATED THE TOP ECHELONS OF

the ATP Tour, Todd Martin proved to be among their ranks time and again. He held a strong record at the highest ranks of the Tour, from reaching two major finals at the Australian Open and US Open to fighting his way to four other major semifinals. He claimed eight singles titles and five doubles titles, too. His highest ranking was No. 4 in the world in 1999. Martin collected more than $8 million in prize money during his career and was president of the ATP Council of Players for a slew of years. He’s been a stalwart of the sport since retiring in 2004 after 14 years on tour. He currently serves as CEO of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, a post he took on in 2014. He has also coached some of the biggest stars in the game, including Novak Djokovic and Mardy Fish. His talent for tennis was fostered in the Midwest; he was born in Illinois. We sat down with Martin, now 45, to discuss his career.

58

WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN // 2015

What do you remember of your experience growing up in the Midwest? I learned to play in Ohio. Until

Q:

I was 10, I was in between Akron and Cleveland. My early memories of life and tennis were both from Ohio—being a ball boy on Lake Erie for Dick Stockton and Roscoe Tanner and the gang. But my memories of childhood tennis were filled with always wanting more. More than anything else, I wanted to be a college athlete, not necessarily a college tennis player, but a college athlete. First, I wanted

INTERVIEW to be a college basketball player. As the years went by, I realized that the potential for that to happen and the potential for me to play college tennis were going on separate graphs. I always wanted more because my parents wouldn’t let me do as much as my Florida peers. They would take me to the courts three times a week. They would say they could only afford three days a week, but they could’ve probably afforded a little more. But they had every desire to raise a kid who was not a one-trick pony. And try as they might, I ended up a one-trick pony. They’re fond memories.

the past. The reality is that every time you walk on the court, a different guy could show up for good or for bad.

Q:

How does tennis compare today to 10 years ago? It’s night and

day. The first 10 of my first 14 years it was hole management. We all had holes. [Back then], it was about how well you could cover up your holes. Where’s Novak’s hole? I coached him for a year, and I don’t know where [the] hole [in his game] is. He cleaned up his serve and the only thing you can do is get [him] a little vulnerable mentally.

Q:

We’r e s e e i n g m o r e c o l l e g e tennis athletes breaking into the professional ranks. What was your experience like at Northwestern? I

went to Northwestern with the hopes that I’d be able to play after I was done with school, and never with any inkling that I’d be a guy who would leave school early. After my freshman year I was pretty confident that was going to be prophetic. After the summer after my freshman year, I did really well in the then Satellites and now Futures. And then I did very well in my sophomore year and the summer after my sophomore year. I didn’t feel like I had dedicated myself fully to tennis. I couldn’t have had a better experience at Northwestern. It was challenging at every level. I wasn’t right or mature in certain ways to handle what was going to happen on the pro tour, but knowing me I’m typically the guy who jumps into the deep end. I struggled for a couple years, but once I stopped struggling, I really didn’t struggle.

Q:

As you look back on your career, what’s your gut reaction to that time? If you look at it alone at a career

highlights level, I would say it was greater than my wildest of wildest dreams. We don’t have the luxury of living by snapshot; we live by video. The long form video of my career has ups and downs, not because of injury but because of my ability to adjust quickly. In professional athletes, if you start to do poorly you start to forget. And when you’re doing well you think doing poorly is a thing for

If I wasn’t going to be a tennis player I wanted to be a teacher. Once I was far enough into my playing career, I loved teaching tennis. I loved getting people to understand things and do things better.

Andy Murray, sure, his second serve isn’t spectacular but if he gets his racquet on the first ball after it you’re neutral at best. T he level at the very top is far better than it’s ever been. I could argue that there’s another handful of guys who should be there all the time, right on the doorstep, and they are on the doorstep. I’d love to see the conditions speed up again to see who handled all conditions again. The homogenization of conditions has been good for the most part, but I

think you’re playing the same conditions every week you should expect to see the same results, which I don’t think is great. I love what the combined events and what the Masters 1000s do, but I also think that the structure of the tour right now puts a lot of pressure on the rest of the tournaments to get talent to come play.

Q:

Can you talk about your role coaching in the past, including Novak Djokovic and Mardy Fish?

I always wanted to coach. When I was growing up I wanted to be a teacher. If I wasn’t going to be a tennis player I wanted to be a teacher. Once I was far enough into my playing career, I loved teaching tennis. I loved getting people to understand things and do things better. I always wanted to coach, and I had some really interesting and good experiences doing that. Can you talk about how being a professional tennis player helps your work as CEO of the International Tennis Hall of Fame?

Q:

One thing that really helps me is I’m not afraid to work. I can get going. Now all my life I’ve been better when being physically stimulated than when I’m sedentary. That’s probably the biggest challenge there. I’m also pretty darn self-motivated; you don’t find many who aren’t, at least those of us who’ve done OK. At the same time, self-motivation turns into some challenges in delegation and asking for help. I have no problem delegating when I know what to delegate and who to delegate it to.

Q:

W h a t wa s i t l i ke p l ay i n g i n Cincinnati? I’d play, and [my

friends and I would] get something quick to eat. We’d do Kings Island and we’d ride The Beast and one other ride. We felt like kids in candy stores. My ten nis was never as good in Cincinnati as elsewhere and as I’d hoped it would be. Maybe that’s the added expectation or pressure you put on yourself. I lost in the quarters to Pat Rafter [in 2000]. That was the best I’d ever done there.

Both of his children, Alicia and Nick, were diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. They also shared a passion for tennis. Alicia played the game until her disease made it impossible (she lost her 16-year battle with cystic fibrosis at age 20). Her passion lives on through Nick, who has been recognized as the only NCAA Division I student athlete with cystic fibrosis. In addition to his love for the tournament, Lang continues to volunteer as a way to give back for everything Cincinnati Children’s has done for his family. was when Alicia and Nick met Novak Djokovic. // Jenn Leichman had volunteered in public relations for a number of years when, one year, it was taking a bit too much time from her personal life. Instead of spending hours away from Mike, her then-fiance, Jenn decided to get him involved. The high school sweethearts have volunteered together for a total of 11 years. Through their involvement, they’ve made many valuable friendships with people around the world. The couple looks forward to returning each year to see media members and other volunteers who have become part of their beloved “tennis family.” X JENN: MY FAVORITE THING is how much the tournament has grown. It’s now a huge national tournament with a small-town charm, which makes it very unique. X MIKE: MY MOST MEMORABLE moment happened when Ken Griffey Jr. was attending the tournament with his family. It was the first time Serena was playing and Griffey’s wife wanted to meet her, so I was told to introduce them to each other. I got to watch two of my idols meet each other. It was awesome! X JENN & MIKE: WE LOVE WATCHING the press conferences to see how the players talk about their personal lives, match, etc. It’s interesting to see all of their emotions, especially after a match. Some of them are such sore losers!

When I first met Lee Krombholz, we had an immediate connection. We had a conversation, he listened and took time to understand. When I think about jewelry, I think about a snapshot of a moment in time. And when I look at the finished piece it reminds me of an incredible occasion. At Krombholz, they get that and the importance of creating memories and ultimately delivering perfection in their jewelry. It’s no wonder they’re celebrating 75 years in business!

CINCINNATI CHILDREN’S

From Hospital Slippers to Ballet Slippers

Lola wouldn’t let cancer make her weak. She was just 5 years old when she was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Her family looked to the experts in the Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute at Cincinnati Children’s so Lola could receive compassionate, worldclass care.

After her treatment was complete, Lola took dance lessons while her body healed. Just one year later, she was accepted to SCPA and began fourth grade as a dance major. “It was wonderful for her to have ballet to focus on,” Kathy says. “It was a great therapy for her body. She got stronger, and it kept her focused.”

“We will always be grateful to Cincinnati Children’s,” says Kathy, Lola’s mom. “The care she received was amazing. It was tough, but she fought hard and she’s still with us today.”

Today, to help keep her healthy—and dancing—Lola is seen in our Survivor Clinic. The clinic sees patients of all ages who have been cancer-free for at least five years.

Lola’s family and care team developed a personalized approach to treat her cancer. It included some of the most innovative and aggressive therapies, and she conquered the disease.

One of just a few in the country, the Survivor Clinic at Cincinnati Children’s helps survivors like Lola thrive by providing multidisciplinary, lifelong care to meet the unique needs of those who faced cancer and won. By following patients for so many years, our researchers are also able to study the long-term effects of treatment, helping them develop even better therapies for future generations.

While she was fighting, Lola set a goal. Though she had never danced before, she decided she wanted to be a ballerina. “We were sitting in the hospital, and she said she wanted to be a dancer,” Kathy remembers. “She knew she wanted to go to the School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), and she was determined to make it happen.”

Lola plans to keep dancing—all the way to Broadway—and she hopes her care team from Cincinnati Children’s who saved her life will be sitting in the front row.

Local Story. National Impact. The cancer program at Cincinnati Children’s has been named #2 in the country in U.S. News & World Report’s 2015 ranking. And for the fifth consecutive year, the medical center at large has been named #3 overall among all Honor Roll hospitals. There’s a lot to be proud of. But there’s more to accomplish, here and beyond. Let’s do this together. Our goal is to cure all kids with cancer so little ones like Maddie can thrive. And you can help. Introducing the Paul & Carolyn Flory Fund

Paul Flory is an icon here. An inspiration. A visionary. A hero. He has a statue to prove it. Paul served as chairman of the Western & Southern Open until his death in 2013. He helped make Cincinnati an essential stop on the men’s ATP World Tour and WTA. His influence has extended far beyond the sport of tennis. Early on, Paul chose to make the UC Health Barrett Center at the University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute a beneficiary of the tournament. Cancer treatment and care was personal for Paul. His wife, Carolyn, passed away after battling gynecologic cancer. “Mr. Paul Flory was certainly one of Cincinnati’s all-time greats,” says William Barrett, MD, director of the UC Cancer Institute. “His legacy continues with the success of the tournament and of the Barrett Center. I am incredibly grateful for his impact and for the support of the Western & Southern Open.”

In January 2015, the Western & Southern Financial Fund, Western & Southern Financial Group’s corporate foundation, gave $1 million to the UC Cancer Institute to establish a fund that honors Paul and his wife. The Paul & Carolyn Flory Fund benefits educational, research, and patient-driven initiatives within the UC Cancer Institute. “Paul Flory symbolizes what it means to be dedicated to a cause and to a city,” says John F. Barrett, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Western & Southern Financial Group. “We are proud to sponsor the tournament and to be able to recognize Paul with the creation of the Paul & Carolyn Flory Fund.” As Paul achieved world-class recognition for the tennis tournament, the UC Cancer Institute now pursues world-class recognition in clinical care, research, and education—a mission that would make Paul proud. Visit FloryFund.com to learn more about the life-changing work of Paul Flory and to support the Paul & Carolyn Flory Fund.
