Put Some Distance Between You and a More Invasive Knee Surgery. I refused to let my chronic symptomatic knee slow me down. So when an MRI showed a bone defect - also known as a bone marrow lesion - in the bone near my knee, my doctor recommended The Subchondroplasty® Procedure. This minimally-invasive technique fills these defects with a biomimetic bone substitute that is replaced with new bone during the healing process. Best of all? I’m back on my bike and on the road to recovery.

Visit subchondroplasty.com to learn more about The Subchondroplasty® Procedure and find a surgeon in your area.

All surgical procedures carry a certain level of risk. The SCP® procedure is not recommended for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) >40 or patients with severe joint malalignment. Talk with your surgeon about whether you are appropriate for the SCP® procedure, its risks and benefits and what you can expect after surgery.

Welcome

Welcome to the

2016 Western Southern Open! Y

OU PROBABLY WERENÀT AWARE, BUT YOU ARE READING ONE OF THE FEW COMMEMORATIVE

printed programs remaining in professional tennis. Just like the rest of the print world, many of our contemporaries at other tournaments have ceased production of the printed program in favor of new digital outlets. So you might ask—why do we continue? If you haven’t noticed, we have a thing for tradition here at the Western & Southern Open. We also are passionate about doing things the right way. And finally, we think tirelessly about you, the fan. Many of you have collected the program for years. It may be something that sits on your bookshelf to mark consecutive years visiting the event. It may conjure up a memory of a championship by one of your favorite players. It may serve as a palette for you or your children to collect autographs. Whatever the purpose, the fact that we produce this beautiful printed program each year is in many ways a microcosm of how we feel about this event. We believe in tradition, in doing things the right way, and in bringing the best fan experience to you each year. Whether this is your first program purchase, or just the latest addition to an annual collection, we hope you enjoy this piece of printed memorabilia—a dying breed at many events, but a tradition that will continue each year here at the Western & Southern Open.

Enjoy the event,

Elaine Bruening Chief Executive Officer, Western & Southern Open

Welcome

Western & Southern

welcome O

N BEHALF OF THE UNITED STATES TENNIS ASSOCIATION, IT IS MY PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU TO

the 2016 Western & Southern Open. This tournament is annually one of the top stops on both the men’s and women’s pro tours, as it is one of only five events in the world that feature an ATP Masters 1000 men’s event and a WTA Premier 5 women’s event during the same week. That outstanding mix of the game’s top talents has made this tournament one of pro tennis’ real jewels, providing endless excitement for the lucky fans in attendance. The Western & Southern Open is this country’s oldest professional tennis tournament still held in its original city. Beginning as the Cincinnati Open in 1899, it has provided a stage for many of the greatest players in the history of our sport. The list of those who have won here reads like a “Who’s Who?” of tennis, and last year’s champions—seven-time Cincinnati winner Roger Federer and two-time champ Serena Williams—only added to that long tradition of greatness. Of course, just as important to this tournament’s long-running success as its legendary champions are the legions of great fans who turn out in droves each year to support it. Tennis fans from all 50 states and from more than 30 countries have attended the Western & Southern Open, with 199,217 fans passing through the turnstiles in 2015, selling out 14 of the 16 sessions while setting a new all-time attendance record. This is a tournament that brings together great players, a world-class venue, and a worldwide fan base—and that all adds up to an unbeatable experience. The Western & Southern Open also is an important stop on the Emirates Airline US Open Series, and that’s why all of us at the USTA are thrilled to be a partner in continuing to enhance this one-of-a-kind event. And for all the on-court thrills it provides, it’s important also to note that this tournament has become a model for giving back to its community, as it has contributed nearly $10 million to local charities, including the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Barrett Cancer Center, and Tennis for City Youth. I’d like to thank everyone involved in putting on this wonderful event, especially the dedicated volunteers who give tirelessly of their time to ensure that each year is more successful than the last. And a special thanks to all of you passionate tennis fans from here in the greater Cincinnati area—and from around the globe—whose continued support helps make this tournament a resounding success year after year.

Enjoy the Western & Southern Open! Katrina M. Adams USTA Chairman, CEO, and President

Greetings, On behalf of the State of Ohio, I welcome you to the 2016 Western & Southern Open, being held at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, from August 13–21, 2016. Welcome

dear tennis fans,

O

N BEHALF OF THE ATP IT IS MY PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU TO THE WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN, ONE OF NINE ELITE ATP WORLD

Tour Masters 1000 tournaments on the Tour. Last year’s tournament drew record numbers, with almost 200,000 fans coming through the gates across the 16 sessions, as Roger Federer defeated Novak Djokovic to capture an incredible seventh career Western & Southern Open crown. Djokovic, a five-time finalist in Cincinnati, will have hopes of capturing one of the few major titles still to elude him. A victory for the Serb would see him become the first singles player in history to capture all nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles to complete the so-called career Golden Masters. This year’s tournament will also offer fans a chance to witness an exciting group of “next gen” emerging talents on the ATP World Tour. Players such as Alexander Zverev, Borna Coric, and Taylor Fritz have very bright futures ahead and have made huge strides so far this season. I’d like to welcome Andre Silva in his new role as Tournament Director of the Western & Southern Open, and wish him and his organizing team the very best for a successful event. I would also like to recognize Western & Southern’s fantastic support of this tournament as title sponsor for a 15th consecutive year. We thank you for your support and hope you enjoy all the action as the drama unfolds throughout the tournament. The 2016 ATP World Tour features 62 events in 32 countries. We invite you to follow us all season long at www.ATPWorldTour.com. Best wishes, Chris Kermode ATP Executive Chairman and President

WHQQLVÀV QH[W big ideas CHANGE IS INEVITABLE, EVEN IN A SPORT THAT GUARDS TRADITION AS MUCH AS TENNIS DOES. TO WIT: HAWK-EYE DEBUTED MORE THAN A DECADE AGO, ALLOWING PLAYERS TO CHALLENGE LINE CALLS. WHATÀS NEXT? THESE IDEAS ARE BEING VOLLEYED AROUND. BY MEGAN FERNANDEZ

LAVER CUP Tennis may develop its version of the Ryder Cup next year. This team competition on the drawing board would pit the best men’s players from Europe with a squad representing the rest of the world. Named in honor of Australian great Rod Laver, the three-day annual event is under development with Tennis Australia and TEAM8, a sportsmanagement firm in Cleveland launched by Roger Federer and his agent, Tony Godsick, among others.

BIANNUAL DAVIS CUP For many top players, the Davis Cup format doesn’t work anymore because the sport has become extremely physical, injuries are rampant, and winning the prestigious team competition requires playing four extra weeks during the year. Calls to shorten the Davis Cup or play it every other year have become as common as injury withdrawals, but tennis federations in many small nations (135 entered Davis Cup this year) rely on the revenue from the events to support player development. Changing the format would be like altering the Olympics schedule—or so conventional wisdom goes. However, the International Tennis Federation, Davis Cup’s organizer, is said to be more open to change under the leadership of new president David Haggerty. There are few changes top players would like more than a lesstaxing Davis Cup.

SMART RACKETS

UNLIMITED CHALLENGES

SHOT CLOCK

Since Hawk-Eye debuted, technology’s biggest impact on tennis has been confined to equipment, chiefly spingenerating strings. The next frontier in racket advancement might also change the way fans watch the sport. Sensors built into the racket or attached capture data during a match, like how many forehands and backhands a player hits and how many of topspin shots versus flat strokes. Those stats aren’t readily available now. Babolat makes an integrated version (Rafael Nadal practices with it), and more will surely follow—along with a way to present that data to the audience.

The challenge rules haven’t changed since Hawk-Eye debuted 10plus years ago. Players still receive three challenges to use per set, losing one each time they are incorrect on a challenge. If they run out before the end of a set, bad line calls can go uncorrected. This happened to Novak Djokovic when he lost to Sam Querrey at Wimbledon last month. Serving at 5–4 in the fourth set, Hawk-Eye showed TV audiences that Djokovic lost two points on incorrect calls after he was run out of challenges, and he eventually lost the set and the match. Tennis correspondent Mary Carillo is among those who think it’s time for the rules to evolve and allow players unlimited challenges, right or wrong. Her argument goes that the technology exists to get every call right, so it should be used that way. The concern is frequent challenges slowing down the pace of the match.

Rules allow a server to take 25 seconds between points. But watch and count as players towel off and perform an elaborate preserve routine without receiving a time violation. Sports Illustrated’s Jon Wertheim often calls for a shot clock when readers raise the topic in his Mailbag column. Will it ever happen? Time will tell.

A $4 million expansion adds more than 1,500 seats to Center Court, as well as eight luxury sky boxes and four new suites in the north section. The new additions allow attendance to surpass 10,000 for a single session, the largest it had ever been.

Two new airconditioned levels are built beneath the west stands, adding a player lounge, player locker room, offices, news/ media interview room, media lounge, and training rooms.

[ 1997 ] A third court is added, making the Open the only event outside the Grand Slams with three permanent courts.

[ 1967 ] The tournament moves to the University of Cincinnati’s Boyd B. Chamber Courts, where hard courts are used for the first time. A $15,000 professional tournament is held in conjunction with the amateur tournament. It is the first combination professional/amateur tournament in the world.

1974 The tournament moves completely indoors on specially constructed Supreme courts at the Cincinnati Convention Center downtown.

[ 1974 ] This is the first year that donations are made to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Despite financial trouble, $15,000 is donated to Children’s. Since then, more than $8 million has been donated to this worthy cause. The tournament is responsible for more than $10 million in charitable donations over the years.

Lights are added to the Grandstand Court, allowing night matches to be played on two courts for the first time.

Construction is completed on the new stadium in Mason. It is one of only six stadiums in the world built specifically for tennis at the time.

The tournament moves to its current location in Mason, Ohio, 25 miles north of Cincinnati. Plans are made for a permanent stadium to be built in the suburban area. For the time being, a center court and temporary stands are constructed, able to hold 5,200 fans, as well as three other courts.

2011

The new facility built on the west side of Center Court is named the Paul Flory Player Center, featuring a women’s locker room, an expanded player lounge, training facilities, player dining, six new luxury suites for fans, and an expanded media center.

The site gains six new courts (including a 4,000seat television court), a new entrance, and a new ticket office.

[ 2016 ] Construction on the new southern building is underway. It will offer plenty of exciting upgrades; for the first time in the world of tennis, fans can experience indoor, air-conditioned box seats. A new broadcast facility, full-service club restaurant, outdoor boxes, and luxury suites with a bar and patio will be built as well. Completion is slated for the 2017 event.

Ply Your Way to Power like

Venus Williams gg PLYOMETRICS, sometimes called “jump training,” focuses around short, explosive moves. Venus Williams uses this type of workout, which builds cardio strength as well as the power—perfect for springing toward the ball with an explosive first step. You can find plyometric classes, or just DIY a workout with these plyos. Make like Williams and perform sets of 11, mimicking the name of her fitness brand, EleVen by Venus.

5 // Skipping Yes, this schoolyard game works as a grownup exercise, too. Just add more power and bring your knee as high as you can toward your chest while swinging your opposite arm high in the air. Bound along the baseline or across a room and back again. Kick up the intensity by skipping on one leg, jumping as hard as you can.

6 // Skaters Jump to your right, landing crouched on your right leg with your left leg bent at 90 degrees. Leap to the left and land in the same position, switching legs. Repeat, jumping as wide as you can. 7 // Lunge knee-up Lunge backward onto your right leg. Pull the right knee up to your chest, then lunge again on the same leg. After a few in a static position, jump when you pull the knee to your chest and crunch your abs, making the move more dynamic. 1 // squat jumps Stand in a squat

position, with knees directly over your toes and a little more than shoulderwidth apart. Jump and land with your feet together, bending your knees, and jump back into the squat position. Repeat, quickly. Make sure to drop your hips and keep your chest lifted every time you land.

2 // PliÞ bounce Similar to a squat jump, but bounce twice in the middle and concentrate on exploding from your hips.

self up in a lunge position, with your right leg behind you. Jump up and land in a lunge on the left leg. Repeat—almost like you’re running in place, but in a lunge position.

9HQXVÀV Warmup The five-time Wimbledon champ adds some pep to her warmup to make it more fun. This full-body twist gets the whole body moving. Just bounce in place, twisting your hips from side to side like Chubby Checker instructed. Swing your arms in the opposite direction from your hips, and take them over your head and back down, repeatedly.

Interview

Q&A WITH

andre silva From playing tennis as a kid to working at the ATP, Andre Silva talks about the events that led him to his new role as Tournament Director of the Western & Southern Open.

INTERVIEW BY // PETE HOLTERMANN INTRO BY // BENJAMIN SNYDER

A

NDRE SILVA MAY BE THE NEW TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR FOR THE WESTERN & SOUTHERN

Open, but he’s certainly no stranger to tennis. In fact, Silva has spent more than 14 years working for the ATP World Tour. There, he held numerous roles in player relations. He also served as the Tournament Director for the ATP World Tour Finals, which is the ATP’s end-of-year championship. More recently, Silva has been an executive at the Cleveland-based sports agency TEAM8. We spoke to Silva ahead of his fi rst tournament at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Here’s what you need to know. What is your background in tennis? Tennis has been part of my life for close to 35 years.

I started playing tennis when I was 9 years old because I saw my dad playing and I felt like

50 // WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN 2016

it was the right thing to do. I made a lot of friends right away and that kept me going. Tennis has given me a lot of opportunities. Tennis allowed me to come to the U.S. first to be a coach at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy. I also got a scholarship to play at Anderson University in South Carolina. From there, I had the opportunity of a lifetime to work at the ATP, which was

interview

an incredible 14 years and which allowed me to work with great tennis players. You mentioned working at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy. It must have been an incredible experience being surrounded by so much talent.

It was a fun time back then, and there is no doubt that he helped me quite a bit in getting the job at the ATP. At that time, you had players like Tommy Haas and Andre Agassi battling each other at a young age. Nick is somebody who I always look up to because he was extremely nice and accommodating to me. The best thing was when after a year and a half being there, he called me into his office. I thought I was going to get fired. I hadn’t done anything wrong, but you never get a call into Nick’s office. He wanted to wish me a happy birthday and gave me a ticket to go back to Brazil to see my family. Nick is a special person to me. You mentioned playing collegiate tennis when you got to the U.S. Where did you play and what was that experience like as a student-athlete?

I played at Anderson University in South Carolina, which is a small Baptist school. It had a very good tradition in tennis. It became Division II midway through my college career and it was a great experience. It is one of the things that I wish more players had the chance to do. I think sometimes they jump into professional tennis a little too fast, and they could learn a lot if they had a chance to play college tennis. It is a team environment, which is something that you don’t see very often in tennis. It is also a great experience to learn social skills because you don’t only focus on tennis. You spent 14 years with the ATP. Can you talk more about your role there? Yes, players were definitely

my focus, but one thing that was very important to me was to understand the ATP as a whole. The ATP is an organization where players and tournaments have to come together. I spent most of my time focusing on the

players’ side, but I learned that both sides need to work together and need to work seamlessly to reach higher levels of success. How has the Western & Southern Open developed over the years?

Cincinnati has grown tremendously in the last few years. I remember when I started at the ATP and I came to Cincinnati for the first time in 2000. It was a very different feel, not only onsite but also everything around it. The city and the nation have grown. The site is incredible and state-of-the-art, especially areas where the fans don’t have access, such as in the locker rooms and training facilities. The perception is it’s actually getting better and better. I think players feel welcomed here by the fans. The fans are very knowledgeable and very respectful. Can you talk about continuing the legacy of the Western & Southern Open as the new Tournament Director? It’s very special. I met Paul

Flory my first time in 2000, and he was always a gentleman to me and always willing to listen and be patient with me, especially as I was learning. He was somebody who you always felt had a very positive energy and who was true to everybody. Those are some big shoes to fill, but the reality is it is exciting because you have a tremendous responsibility to make it not only a great event but also an event that he would be proud of.

I met Paul Flory my first time in 2000... Those are some big shoes to fill, but the reality is it is exciting because you have a tremendous responsibility to make it not only a great event but also an event that he would be proud of.

What do you see for the Western and Southern Open in the future? I want

to make it an even more fan-friendly and more player-friendly event. I want the tournament to continue to grow and to make it the second-biggest tournament in the U.S. We should strive to be the best Masters 1000 event, and we should strive to be the best tournament in the U.S. after the US Open. We will do that by learning from the fans, learning from the players, learning from our partners, and trying to continue to make the experience better. This Q&A has been edited for clarity and grammar.

ELAINE BRUENING After volunteering at the tournament for a decade, Elaine made the decision to leave her job at Procter & Gamble and work with her boss, Paul Flory, at the Open. Despite the job switch being a big leap of faith, she went for it, taking a position in the office. Today she is the CEO. One of her biggest accomplishments is the current women’s tournament, which she helped to start back in 2003. X MY FAVORITE PLAYER HAS TO BE ROGER FEDERER. He is a class act. He is obviously a great player with a lot of talent, but he is also a great gentleman. XI

DON’T ACTUALLY PLAY TENNIS, but my husband does. I’m really bad at it.

X I STARTED DOING OFFICE WORK. I was not so much on a committee, but more in the office keeping track of the box seat sales. X A MEMORABLE MOMENT: During a rain delay I happened to answer the phone and on the other side was Andre Agassi. He had a match that day, which was being delayed, and he wanted to know when his match was going on.

FORTY FOR THE OPEN ELAINE BRUENING AND PHIL HINKLE HAVE GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND BY PROVIDING THEIR SERVICES FOR THE LAST FOUR DECADES. BY HAILEY MALLENDICK

PHIL HINKLE Phil found his niche in volunteering for the Open through his parents, who began the family tradition of volunteering at the Tri-State Tennis Tournament. Since then he has volunteered in various positions such as usher, ball boy, and now marshal. He has also witnessed the event flourish first-hand and move from the Cincinnati Tennis Club to Coney Island, and now to the Lindner Family Tennis Center. X ROGER FEDERER IS CURRENTLY MY FAVORITE PLAYER. Not only is he a great player, but he is kind when he deals with the public.

PLAY TENNIS three to four times a week and am a 4.0–4.5 doubles player at the age of 74.

X THE EVOLUTION OF THE TOURNAMENT started in the mid-1970s with the larger venues. Tennis tournaments used to be a social event where people went to see and be seen. People wanted to see good tennis, they understood the etiquette, and behaved accordingly. Now there is additional concern with the safety of the players and the fans, so polite crowd control and security are my committee’s No. 1 concern.

LOCAL AMERICANA BAND YOUNG HEIRLOOMS RETURNS TO THE STAGE AT THIS YEAR’S OPEN. +RZ ZRXOG \RX GHVFULEH \RXU EDQGÀV PXVLF" Storytelling through song is an American tradition. Our music takes you on a nostalgic journey with our sentimental, heartfelt original tunes. These honest, original songs are based on family history, personal experience, and adventures on the run. Anticipate the timelessness of bygone musical eras and dynamic lyrical themes. The antique instrumentation comes with a contemporary kick. Our six-piece band has the ability to resonate with a wide scope of audiences. We have been described as having a similar sound to bands such as Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, Ryan Adams, Nickel Creek, and The Lone Bellow.

Full of Life After overcoming leukemia, Lachlan will receive lifelong care at the Survivorship Clinic at Cincinnati Children’s.

(Far left) Lachlan, 6, was diagnosed with leukemia at 18-months-old. Today, he is thriving and healthy. He’ll become a patient of the Cancer Sur]P]VYZOPW *SPUPJ ^OLU OL PZ Ä ]L `LHYZ H^H` MYVT his diagnosis and two years cancer-free. (above) Winn and Emilie knew something was wrong when their son, Lachlan, developed strange spots on his legs, but they never dreamed it would be cancer. They entrusted his care to the cancer experts at Cincinnati Children’s. (near left) Lachlan remained upbeat throughout his treatment, and he’s been cancer-free since November 2014. Doctors and researchers are working hard to ensure every child facing a battle with cancer will end up as healthy and strong as him.

I

TÀS HARD TO IMAGINE THAT LACHLAN, 6, WITH HIS DARK BLOND,

slightly wild hair and vivid smile, was ever sick. That his parents, Emilie and Winn, ever had to hear the words, “Your son has leukemia.” At the time, Lachlan was just like any other 18-month-old— energetic, curious, and playful. However, while on vacation, Emilie noticed peculiar spots on Lachlan’s legs. Called petechiae, these spots appear on the skin as a result of bleeding. Concerned, Emilie and Winn took their son to the local hospital for a blood test and learned that he had acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Lachlan needed to begin treatment immediately. “That’s when we found out that one of the best pediatric cancer centers was in our backyard. For three and a half years, Cincinnati Children’s was our second home,” Emilie says, smiling. “All of the staff was like a family to us. They still are.” Finally, on November 4, 2014, Lachlan was pronounced

122 // WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN 2016

cancer-free. “It was the best day of our lives,” says Emilie. Her voice grows quiet. “My son is a survivor.” Today, Lachlan is seen regularly by his original care team at Cincinnati Children’s to ensure he remains healthy. Once he is five years from his original diagnosis and two years cancer-free, he will become a lifelong patient of the Cancer Survivorship Center. There, he will receive survivor-focused preventative healthcare to help him learn, grow, and thrive. Because cancer treatments can have long-term effects ranging from increased risk of heart disease to fertility issues and secondary cancers, experts in our Survivorship Center provide care long after the treatments end. When it was established 25 years ago, the center was one of the first of its kind in the nation. Today, we care for more than 1,800 survivors, like Lachlan, ranging from 5 to 65+ years old, empowering them to lead long, healthy lives.

Where cancer meets its match.

When others have given up hope, we’re here. Making science count for children.

Our specialists are nationally recognized for their innovative work in fighting the most difficult pediatric and young adult cancers — and helping cancer survivors thrive.

In fact, Cincinnati Children’s is one of the largest referral centers for children with rare and relapsed cancers.

Our new proton therapy center will take care to the next level — offering kids safer, more effective radiation treatments, with fewer long-term side effects. And it is the only center in the world with a dedicated proton therapy research unit.

One of the nation’s leading children’s hospitals, Cincinnati Children’s ranks third in the country among all Honor Roll hospitals

Today we can cure most children with cancer, but our goal is to cure them all. You can help.

Not a tennis fanatic?

Not a problem. There are really two events at the Western & Southern Open— the competition happening on-court and the activities and attractions all over the grounds. Some of Cincinnati’s best restaurants serve a variety of cuisines while more than 30 bands provide a soundtrack throughout the week in the food court. Shop the boutiques in the retail plaza, pick up the latest gear at the giant Midwest Sports store, or test your skills in the speed serve cage.

Food and Exhibitor list as of July 20.
