WELCOME
O
n behalf of the City of Cincinnati, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Ault Park Concours d’Elegance. During the past 37 years, this event has attracted thousands of spectators and participants from across the United States and Canada, becoming one of the most anticipated events for classic car enthusiasts in the entire nation. Ever since the first event was held at the estate of William and Helen Williams in 1978, Concours d’Elegance has become associated with presenting the best of classic car design, generating excitement far and wide among aficionados. I am especially excited about the theme of this year’s event, “Art of the Automobile: Great American Design.” As you know, it’s also the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang and the 100th anniversary of the Maserati, so I expect this year’s displays will be among the best ever. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the Concours committee for all of its hard work. By growing this event from a casual gathering of car enthusiasts to a nationally recognized celebration, the committee has generated more than $1 million for our local chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. Your efforts have been crucial to bringing new awareness to the fight against juvenile arthritis, and the Greater Cincinnati community is grateful. Cincinnati is a city where you will find unparalleled arts, celebrated cultural institutions and world-class entertainment options. We are proud to be the home of the two-time Tony Award-winning Playhouse in the Park, one of the top five zoos in the nation, excellent museums, a nationally recognized park system and major professional sports teams. After enjoying the Concours weekend, I hope you will take time to visit the many attractions and amenities that have made our city a popular tourist destination over the years. Cincinnati is proud to host this celebration of automotive excellence once again. As Mayor, I look forward to meeting many of you and enjoying this fantastic event.

WELCOME
From the Chief Judge
T
he 2014 team of judges and I would like to thank all of the car owners for bringing such a wonderful group of vehicles to our 37th Ault Park Concours d’Elegance. I hope that you will enjoy this year’s event as much as we enjoy planning it for you. Judging at the Ault Park Concours follows the traditional Concours d’Elegance standards set by the early events that took place in the ’20s and ’30s where style, presence and elegance determine the winners. The judges will also take into account the historical significance of the design of the car, as well as assessing the quality and accuracy of the restoration of the interior, exterior and the engine compartment. This year we will once again award two Best of Show trophies, the first from the traditional classes and the second an Esprit de Sport award selected from the sports and racing classes. We have assembled a highly qualified team of judges from around the country to aid in the selection of Best of Class, First Place and Awards of Distinction for each class. We also have many special awards and, lastly, the two Best of Show awards. We believe every vehicle on the field is a winner, and we would love to give every one of you a trophy for taking the time from your busy schedules to display such beautiful works of art for the enjoyment of the public and to further such a wonderful cause.
The Judging Team wishes to thank all of you for coming!

WELCOME
Letter from the Co-Chairs
I
t is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 2014 Ault Park Concours d’Elegance. This is our 37th consecutive year of displaying some of the country’s ďŹ nest automobiles and motorcycles as well as raising funds for the local area Arthritis Foundation. This dual mission of presenting unique and spectacular vehicles and providing the ďŹ nancial support necessary for the Arthritis Foundation’s work with families whose children suffer from Juvenile Arthritis is what drives and inspires us year after year. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the many people without whom the show would simply not be possible: the hundreds of dedicated volunteers working both behind the scenes as well as in ‘front of house,’ the car owners for their commitment and enthusiasm to share their vehicles, and, of course, the spectators who ultimately make the day so rewarding. Thanks so very much to all of you. Lastly, please take a moment to enjoy all the facilities at Ault Park while you are with us today. It is a fabulous venue that we are very fortunate to utilize for our event. On behalf of the Cincinnati Concours Foundation Board of Directors and Ault Park Concours Committee, thank you once again for your participation and support.
Enjoy the show!

ROGER WARRICK has been a fan of motorsports and art since his dad took him to see his first dirt-track race in 1973, at the age of 6. His early love of drawing— especially cars, trucks and trains—eventually led him to attend The Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD) on an academic scholarship, where he earned a BFA in Illustration in 1989. Roger has worked as a freelance illustrator in Cincinnati and Indianapolis for clients such as Procter & Gamble, Macy’s and General Electric Aircraft. His original paintings and prints have been commissioned by Autoweek, Watkins Glen International, Ford Racing, the Dayton Concours d’Elegance, Bristol Motor Speedway, Mid-Ohio, Road Atlanta, Paul Oxman Publishing, Austin Hatcher Foundation and Team Sahlen, as well as many private collectors. He has contributed work to several published books on auto racing history. Warrick was chosen as poster artist for the Petit LeMans three times and has created the official event poster artwork for the 12 Hours of Sebring each year since 2005. espite the common yet inaccurate belief that arthritis is “an old person’s” disease, 300,000 American children endure the debilitating pain and severely disabling effects of juvenile arthritis (JA) in its many forms. From systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)—a form of rheumatoid arthritis seen in children—to systemic sclerosis—a form of arthritis that affect the skin, muscle tissue, joints, blood vessels, and even internal organs—juvenile arthritis robs children of the joys of childhood, altering and even threatening their lives. Although there are effective treatments available for some forms of JA, none of them were developed especially for children. Even JA patients who have access to doctors with a clear understanding of the varying forms of the disease must still undergo a process of trial and error before an effective treatment is determined. This wastes valuable time while the child endures chronic pain and the disease progresses, causing lasting damage and disability. The Arthritis Foundation has been fighting juvenile arthritis and supporting families for more than 60 years. Nationally, every year more than $4.5 million is invested in outreach and JA specific research that advances treatments and will lead to a cure. The Arthritis Foundation Ohio River Valley goals are to provide local JA families with education, resources and support for managing juvenile arthritis through our JA programs: • SAK (Backpack Program) • Concours d’Elegance JA Motorcade • Annie E. Anderson Fall Family Camp • Concours d’Elegance Hagerty Youth Judging Committee • Scholarship programs for families to attend the National JA Conference • Kids Zones at the local Walks • JA Resource CD Modules: Medications and School Issues Our programs, resources and continued research into a cure would not be possible without the support of our partners. The Concours d’Elegance has been our leading JA partner and supporter of our programs along with taking a major role in launching our very successful SAK Program.
THANK YOU CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE! You have made a difference in the lives of children with Juvenile Arthritis and their families!

The JA Motorcade, founded by Sonja Halbauer and her late husband, Ron, celebrated its sixth tour on Saturday, May 17, 2014. The parade of collector cars chauffeuring children with JA was escorted by the Cincinnati Police Motorcycle Unit. Beginning at Ault Park, the motorcade traveled along Hyde Park Square, wound through Mt. Lookout and breezed down Columbia Parkway before ending at Lunken Airport. The children and their families enjoyed lunch at the Lunken Airport Sky Galley followed by a visit to the Aviation Museum. Assisting Sonja with the event established to honor children with JA were Kelly Case, Arthritis Foundation JA Program Manager; Heather Kopf, member of the Arthritis Foundation Ohio River Valley Advisory Board; and Pamela Tierney, Arthritis Foundation Development Manager. On behalf of the children with JA who participated, many thanks go out to all who helped make this special experience possible!
Hagerty Youth Judging Program The Concours is pleased to report record participation in this year’s Youth Judging Program sponsored by Hagerty! Twenty-eight children, ages 7–15, responded to the call for judges. Five of the children are repeat judges and 12 were introduced to the program through the Concours’ partnership with the Arthritis Foundation. Hagerty provides the official judging gear including T-shirts, hats and scorecards and helps teach our young judges about the cars and evaluation criteria. A small group of cars are pre-selected to be scored by the group, who also present awards to their top three vehicles. Participants have the opportunity to interact with car owners, carefully inspect each car and make the determination of their favorites. Presenting the awards on behalf of the group is Sierra Schnarrenberg, who was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at the age of 4 and has participated as a judge since the program’s inception in 2012.

WHILE THE AMER AMERICAN car industry AMERIC

Bold Bo can inde From the sexy lines of a 1930s Gordon Buehrig-designed Auburn Speedster to Harley Earl’s trademark tail fins and chrome, the best American designers have always deftly blended power with grace. “The American car continues to be one of our most significant and creative contributions in the history of design,” writes art historian C. Edson Armi. “Cars have shaped America like no other visual form.” This year the Ault Park Concours d’Elegance celebrates that design savvy with its featured theme, “Art of the Automobile: Great American Design.” Few cars exemplify that uniquely American combination of brawn and beauty like the 1931 Stutz DV-32 Victoria Rollston, shown by owners Richard and Irina Mitchell, Montgomery, Texas. A massive, 322-cubic-inch, inline eight-cylinder powers the Stutz. Despite this huge motor, the Stutz’s long hoodline and low windshield give the car a sleek, sculptural air. Founded in 1913 by Harry Stutz in Indianapolis, Ind., Stutz Motor Car developed a reputation for fast, luxurious cars favored by society’s elite. In the mid-
16 | Ault Park Concours d’Elegance
1930s, suffering from the effects of the Great Depression, Stutz ceased making cars. However, in the 1970s the name was briefly revived with the help of another automotive design icon, Virgil Exner, who created the Stutz Blackhawk. Another Indiana industrialist, E.L. Cord, assembled businesses that included Auburn Automobile Company, Duesenberg Inc. and the Cord car brand. A wonderful 1937 Cord 812 SC will be on display courtesy of Al Pilz, Ligonier, Pa. The “SC” is short for supercharged; this particular Cord was one of the first to benefit from supercharged air flowing into the 8-cylinder Lycoming power plant. In classic white, the vehicle beautifully demonstrates several signature Cord design cues that give the cars a distinctive look: large, voluptuous fenders; hideaway headlights; the so-called coffin nose; hidden door hinges and a lack of running boards. (Running boards became obsolete when Cord’s innovation of front-wheel drive allowed the vehicle to sit closer to the ground.) The 812s were designed by Illinois-born Gordon Buehrig, one of the world’s most celebrated car designers. Buehrig’s work includes the body design of the Duesenberg Model J, the Auburn Boattail speedster and the 1956 Continental Mark II—all perfect examples of the notion that a well-designed automobile is truly a work of rolling art.
POST-WAR PANACHE The Stutz and the Cord represent a sophistication that’s the hallmark of highend American automobiles made before World War II—a time when highly stylized vehicles were only available to the wealthy. After the war, however, cars with style became attainable by the wider public. Take, for example, the 1957 Chevrolet Belair Nomad shown this year by Bradley Bean, Miramar Beach, Fla. Sure, it’s a station wagon. (What’s more middle-class than that?) However, it also boasts the fins, brightwork and whitewalls so characteristic of the 1950s. If you wanted to look cool while hauling the family around the nation’s newly built freeways, this was definitely your vehicle. This particular Nomad, done up in Sierra Gold and Adobe Beige, features all the best bells and whistles available at the time: air conditioning, power steering and power brakes. The vehicle is powered by a 283-cubic-inch V8 that breathes well, courtesy of a Rochester four-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust. It all adds up to roughly 220 horsepower and 300 foot pounds for torque. Not to be outdone in size or style, Ford, via its Mercury marque, offered up the Turnpike Cruiser in 1957. Concours attendees can get a close look at this long and low Mercury courtesy of John Talan, Strongsville, Ohio, who is presenting his restored edition. Befitting a flagship
model, the Turnpike Cruiser featured an array of cool gadgets: automatically adjusting seats, a calculator that displayed average speed during a trip, as well as a unique air ventilation system. That system uses air inlets mounted at the top of the windshield combined with a power-operated rear window. Just lower the window and catch the breeze—what a way to travel America’s sprawling new highways! Of course, for the consummate “wind through your hair” experience, look no further than the Buick Skylark Convertible, one of the mid-century’s most stylish drop tops. On display by owner Jeffrey Brashares, Marysville, Ohio, is the 1953 Buick Skylark, which boasted Buick’s new overhead valve V8 wrapped in a slinky body. Built to celebrate Buick’s 50th anniversary, the Skylark Convertible featured a chopped windshield, cut-down doors and more than a few compound curves, giving the car a sporting character with hand-built quality. Speaking of hand built, don’t miss the 1950 Muntz Jet being shown by David Hans of Barrington, Ill. The story of the Jet perfectly represents the ultimate combination of automotive artistry with classic American entrepreneurial spirit. The Jet was the brainchild of circle track racecar designer Frank Kurtis, who connected with California entrepreneur Earl “Madman” Muntz. Muntz, a consumer electronics guru and automobile dealer whose persona and advertising gimmicks were worthy of P.T. Barnum, funded the Jet’s production and marketed it under his name. Fewer than 400 Jets were made. The automobile features an aeronautics-inspired body and is powered by either a Lincoln or Cadillac V-8, which moves the Jet to a top speed of just less than 110 mph. Whether it’s the jet-age flair of the Muntz or the sexy opulence of an Auburn, this year’s Ault Park Concours offers attendees the chance to see some of the most striking vehicles ever created in America. And, of course, as with each annual Concours, the lawns and gardens of Ault Park will be filled with a panoply of automotive beauties spanning both geography and time—a gallery-worthy exhibition. Q
MUSTANG TURNS 50 THE STORY IS now a part of automotive legend: With a hunch that an agile and inexpensive two-door sports car might appeal to the baby boomers of 1960s America, Ford exec Lee Iacocca convinced Henry Ford II to green light the Ford Mustang in 1964. Thinking they’d be happy to sell around 100,000 in the first year, Ford—and the rest of the automotive world—were pleasantly astonished when more than 1 million Mustangs rolled out the door in the first 18 months of production. The rest, as they say, is history. Lee Iacocca became an overnight celebrity of American business, and the Mustang became a rolling icon that reimagined the automotive landscape in ways that still reverberate today. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the vehicle that launched the pony car wars, organizers of the 2014 Ault Park Concours have gathered a unique display of noteworthy Mustangs—none rarer than the short-bodied Mustang prototype on display courtesy of owner Bill Snyder, Hudson, Ohio. Created as a design experiment, this prototype was cut down 16 inches shorter than the production Mustang, thus its nickname, “Shorty.” The body panels are fiberglass, and its V-8 motor is bored out to 302 cubic inches—packing a powerful punch in a lightweight package. You can argue about whether or not this prototype is an improvement on the stock Mustang, but one thing is for sure: The man who designed it loved it so much that he made sure it missed the “crusher”—the fate of most prototype and design studies in those days. Lucky for us, after years in hiding, this unique one-off Mustang is still around to enjoy.
MASERATI MILESTONE SAY “CAR” AND “ITALIAN” and most people will think “Ferrari.” No doubt Enzo Ferrari has earned his place in the Automotive Hall of Fame, but few appreciate the fact that the Maserati Brothers of Bologna, Italy, pre-dated Ferrari by several decades in the creation of the fast, sexy and red automobiles we so freely associate with Italy. Founded in 1914, Maseratis were winning international racing events as early as the 1920s. A Maserati was the only Italian car ever to win the Indianapolis 500 when Indy legend Wilbur Shaw piloted a Maserati to victory in both 1939 and 1940. To honor Maserati’s centennial, at least 10 of the trident-bearing beauties will roll onto the lawn of Ault Park, from a 1966 Vignale Spider to a 2006 Gransport Coupe.
