WELCOME TO THE SHOW 2013 CO-CHAIRS’ LETTER elcome to our 36th show! The Ault Park Concours d’Elegance has evolved over the years from a casual gathering at the Williams’ estate to become one of Cincinnati’s premier annual events. We have also grown into a significant fund-raising effort in support of the Arthritis Foundation and services to families with a child suffering from Juvenile Arthritis. As we begin another celebration of automotive excellence, we wish to thank our many sponsors whose generous support has made it possible to maintain our long-standing tradition. We also recognize that this wonderful show would not be possible without the hard work of numerous volunteers, the participation of spectators and most importantly the dedication of car exhibitors who prepare and transport their outstanding vehicles for our enjoyment. In addition to the cars, please take this time to enjoy the beauty of Cincinnati’s historic Ault Park. The Cincinnati Park Board makes this breathtaking venue available for our use each year, and we are proud to have Ault Park as the backdrop for our show. We hope that you have taken part in this year’s exciting raffle for a chance to win a trip to the Barber Motorsports Park that includes a two-day high performance course at the Porsche Sport Driving School and a visit to the world class Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum. The lucky winner will also receive $1,500 toward travel and hotel. Don’t miss your chance to win. Purchase your raffle tickets today at the souvenir tent! On behalf of the Concours Foundation Board of Directors and Committee, we thank you for your participation and support.

FROM THE CHIEF JUDGE his year’s judges and I would like to thank all of the car owners for bringing such wonderful vehicles to our 36th Ault Park Concours d’Elegance. I hope that you enjoy this year’s event as much as we enjoy planning it for you. Judging at Ault Park Concours follows the traditional Concours d’Elegance standards set by the early events that took place in the ’20s and ’30s where style, presence and elegance determine the winners. The judges will also take into account the historical significance of the design of the car, as well as assessing the quality and accuracy of the restoration of the interior, exterior and the engine compartment. This year we are awarding two Best of Show awards, the first from the traditional classes and the second an Esprit de Sport Concours award selected from the sports and racing classes. We have assembled a highly qualified team of judges from around the country to aid in the selection of Best of Class, First Place and Awards of Distinction for each class. We also have many special awards and, lastly, the Best of Show awards. We believe every vehicle on the field is a winner, and we would love to give every one of you a trophy for taking the time from your busy schedules to display such beautiful works of art for the enjoyment of the public and to further such a wonderful cause.

The Judges wish to thank you for coming!

A LETTER FROM THE MAYOR n behalf of the City of Cincinnati, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Ault Park Concours d’Elegance. For 36 years, this event has drawn thousands of spectators and participants from across the United States and Canada, becoming one of the most anticipated events for classic car enthusiasts in the country. It has wowed us with displays of sleek roadsters, luxury coupés and antique cars. Every year it has become more difficult to pick a winner to award the Mayor’s Cup. This year promises to be no different. “Porsche: From Road to Racing” will bring a special collection representing the best in automotive tradition to the gardens of Ault Park. I want to take this opportunity to thank the Concours committee for all of their accomplishments. By growing this event from a casual gathering of car enthusiasts to a nationally recognized celebration, they have generated more than $1 million for our local chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. Your work has been critical to bringing new awareness to the fight against juvenile arthritis, and your community is extremely grateful. Cincinnati is a city where you will find unparalleled arts, celebrated cultural institutions, and first-class entertainment options. Arthritis Foundation’s Goal The Arthritis Foundation’s goal is to provide local JA families with education, resources and support for managing juvenile arthritis through its JA programs: SAK (Backpack Program), Concours d’Elegance JA Motorcade, Annie E. Anderson Fall Family Camp, Concours d’Elegance Hagerty Youth Judging Committee, National JA Conference, Kid’s Zones and Educational Resource CDs. With the success of these local programs, we reach increasing numbers of JA families. SAK (Supporting Arthritis Kids) Backpack Program
Last Wednesday the Arthritis Foundation made Brennan feel like he won the lottery when he got a package in the mail! Brennan got a book bag filled with exactly what he needed to help him with pain, and I got the support I needed as a Mom! Brennan lit up as he unzipped the book bag to find Brandon, a stuffed bear we can heat up in the microwave and put on his knee. I started to cry when I saw a children’s picture book for helping children cope with pain. The Arthritis Foundation knew exactly what Brennan and I needed! Thank you to the many sponsors and people who made the package possible! It truly made a difference in our day and in our lives! —Christy, mother of 7-year-old with arthritis (Testimonial edited for space.)
These types of programs would not be possible without the generous support of partners like the Concours Foundation; their continued support has assisted in all of these valuable programs along with taking the major role in launching our very successful SAK program. 8

rthritis is a complex family of musculoskeletal disorders consisting of more than 100 different diseases or conditions that destroy joints, bones, muscles, cartilage and other connective tissues, hampering or halting physical movement. Juvenile arthritis (JA) is an umbrella term used to describe the many autoimmune and inflammatory conditions that can develop in children ages 16 and younger.
Spotlight on Ault Park Concours Programs for Youth
The JA Motorcade, created by Sonja Halbauer and her late husband, Ron, is proud to have celebrated its fifth tour. The parade of invited collector cars chauffeuring children with JA was escorted by the Cincinnati Police Motorcycle Unit. Beginning at Ault Park, the motorcade traveled along Hyde Park Square, wound through Mt. Lookout and continued to downtown Cincinnati before ending at The American Sign Museum in Camp Washington. The children and their families enjoyed the fascinating display of American history, as portrayed through the museum’s extensive sign collection. To complete their outing, the children were treated to lunch featuring Camp Washington chili.
Hagerty Youth Judging Program Hagerty and the Concours have formed a multiyear “Partnership for Youth,” with the goal of involving more young people in the automotive hobby. This event marks the third year of our Youth Judging Program, developed for children ages 8-15 years old. Hagerty provides the official judging gear including T-shirts, hats and scorecards and helps teach our young judges about the cars and evaluation criteria. A small group of cars are pre-selected to be scored by the group, who also present awards to their top three vehicles. Participants have the opportunity to interact with car owners, carefully inspect each car and make the determination of their favorites. The program continues to grow in popularity, with multiple children requesting to return as a judge at this year’s show.

RACE-BRED SINCE INCEPTION, EVERY PORSCHE HAS COMPETITION IN ITS DNA
FEW AUTOMOTIVE COMPANIES are as synonymous with racing as Porsche. With recordsetting victory totals in all the world’s major sportscar races—including 16 overall wins at Le Mans—no other manufacturer has so closely incorporated competition into both its vehicle design and business plan. Indeed, since 1948, when the first car bearing the Porsche name rolled out of a sawmill in Gmünd, Austria, the company has found success in everything from
Formula One to rallying. Today that tradition continues in the form of race-inspired production supercars such as the 2005 Carrera GT and the 2011 911 GT3 RS 4.0, both of which, courtesy of local collector Mike Valentine, will be on display at the 2013 Ault Park Concours d’Elegance. Indeed, this year’s Concours features examples spanning Porsche’s entire history as part of the featured display, Porsche: From Road to Racing. www.OhioConcours.com • 11
ENGINEERED TO WIN
Long before the cars bearing his name were collecting victories worldwide, Ferdinand Porsche established a reputation as a genius engineer through his work for other firms. He designed the Mercedes SSK, one of the fastest vehicles of the late 1920s and early 1930s. A few years later, Porsche penned the now ubiquitous Volkswagen Beetle. In stark contrast to the humble “people’s car,” Porsche is also credited with the all-conquering, 12-cylinder, 550-horsepower, supercharged Audi “Silver Arrows,” which dominated grand prix racing from the mid-1930s until the outbreak of WWII in Europe. After the chaos and destruction of WWII, Porsche regrouped in Austria where he decided it was time for a car bearing his own name. With the help of his equally talented son, Ferry, the iconic
with the recent launch of the 991, Porsche is unique in this distinction of purpose.” The early Porsches were small and quirky and shared parts with their Volkswagen brethren, including the use of a flat, four-cylinder engine placed in the rear. Though the earliest cars produced just 45 horsepower, the sleek and lightweight machines could achieve speeds upwards of 80 miles per hour and Porsche soon achieved success, and attention, in rallies and hillclimbs around Europe. New York City Importer Max Hoffman was instrumental in establishing sales for Porsche in the U.S. market, and in 1954 he encouraged the factory to create the Speedster, a lower-cost, top-down model designed to appeal to America’s burgeoning West Coast sportscar scene. The now iconic Porsche 356 Speedster was a quick success, garnering fans among the hip,

In its first few years Porsche hand built limited numbers of its first model, the 356, out of aluminum in a former sawmill converted into a makeshift factory. North Carolina Porsche restorer Cameron Ingram has owned and restored several of these very early 356s, including a 1950 model that won Best in Class at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours and is now owned by the Porsche family. In addition to the highly respected restoration company Road Scholars, Ingram and his father, Bob, have assembled one of the nation’s finest Porsche collections in Durham, N.C., and are sharing a number of their rare Porsches during this year’s Concours, including a 1948 example. The Ingram’s ‘48 Gmünd coupe was the 17th Porsche built and features the classic silhouette that continues today in its newest models. “It’s hard to think of another automotive company where one can see the evolution of a design aesthetic over 65 years,” Ingram says. “Starting with the Gmünd coupe in 1948 and ending 12

Southern California set, including the likes of James Dean and Steve McQueen, both of whom owned and raced Porsche 356 Speedsters. Dick Weiss, local Porsche expert and ex-racer, first encountered Porsches in 1958 as an Army GI stationed in France. “A lot of us in the States grew up with British cars, as Porsches weren’t very prevalent in the U.S. in those days,” Weiss says. “While in Europe I attended grand prix and sportscar races and visited all the sportscar dealerships in my free time; lots of fun.” The Speedsters were light, spartan and designed for speed, the perfect car for an aspiring weekend racer. Weiss eventually purchased a Speedster during a jaunt to Frankfurt, raced it a few times in Europe, then shipped it back to the States when the Army transferred him back. Weiss’ current Speedster, which he’s owned since 1960, is a 1958 Carrera GS, featuring the incredibly rare, race-inspired Carrera engine, which uses four overhead cams operated by a complex array of gears to coax high revs and more than 115
horsepower out of just 1489 cubic centimeters of displacement. Less than 150 of these Carrera Speedsters were made and today they easily approach $500,000 at auction. From its humble beginnings in 1948 until its discontinuation in 1965, the 356 gained in horsepower, sophistication and popularity, generating brisk sales (about 75,000 356s were made) that placed Porsche on a firm foundation. Concours attendees will get a close-up look at the evolution of the 356, with more than 10 scheduled to appear, spanning the model range from the simple, elegant 356A to the more powerful and refined 356C.
BECOMING A LEGEND
With the introduction of a new model in 1965, the 911, Porsche cemented its position. Columbus, Ohio, Porsche enthusiast Ron Thomas will be giving attendees a first-hand view of one of these early production 911s by presenting his “Signal Red” 1965 911. The ’65 911 marked the beginning of Porsche’s use of a horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine, now known among auto aficionados as the “flat six.” In 1965 Porsche used 2 liters in displacement to produce 130hp. To this day, the flat six engine continues to power the modern 911, though it now produces as much as 475 horsepower (in GT3 tuning) from 3.8 liters. As it has throughout its history, Porsche helped boost the 911’s early reputation and sales through racing, both with production-based racers, such as the 911R, and via prototypes. One of Porsche’s early prototypes, the 906E, will be on display this year courtesy of local collector Tom Stegman. The 1966 906E was built from a tubular steel space frame covered in a curvy fiberglass body and powered by a fuel injected, light-weight, 200-horsepower racing version of the 911 six cylinder. This particular example, chassis number 158, raced at the 1967 12 Hours of Sebring, in Sebring, Fla., then transferred to a Venezuelan media magnate who raced it extensively throughout South America, as well as back at Sebring in 1968 and 1969. Upon the heels of the success of the 906, Porsche quickly developed the 910, an evolution of the 906 that featured a lighter and improved frame and suspension. Dayton, Ohio’s R.H. Grant III owns
910, chassis 006, which won its class at the 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans in the hands of privateer racers Christian Poirot and Pierre Maublanc. In addition to its appearance at this year’s Concours, 910-006 can still be seen on the vintage racing circuit, most notably each year at the Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio, held at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course just outside of Mansfield, Ohio.
THE MODERN PORSCHE
Many consider the 1970s to be the Golden Age of sportscar racing and by the time the decade drew to a close Porsche had earned multiple overall wins at all the world’s great sportscar races. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s the company continued to produce awe-inspiring machines for both track and street, including the landmark 959. Widely regarded as one of the most technologically advanced vehicles ever produced, the 959’s ultra-light Kevlar body enclosed design innovations that are still in wide use today, including a “smart” all-wheel drive system that directed power based on traction and road conditions, a suspension system that automatically adjusts ride-height and built-in sensors that monitor tire pressure. Inspect all of these details and more by viewing the Ingrams’ silver 1988 959, one of just 226 production 959s assembled. This particular 959 has just 3,000 original miles on its twinturbocharged, 2.8 liter six-cylinder engine that can power the car to 195 mph. Porsche continues to produce some of the world’s most scintillating automobiles. And while they’ve expanded their lineup to include SUVs and four-door sedans, racing remains at the company’s core. In fact, Porsche recently announced a return to the prototype class at Le Mans for 2014, in which it will once again compete for overall victory in the world’s most prestigious endurance race. Whether you’re fond of the simple elegance of a vintage Porsche 356, the high-revving, fire-breathing horsepower of a turbo-charged Porsche racer, or the technological marvel of a modern era Porsche supercar, you’ll find them all at this year’s Ault Park Concours d’Elegance. Q
AN AMERICAN ICON TURNS 60 DESIGNED IN 1953 of a then-exotic new material called fiberglass, the Chevrolet Corvette offered then —and still today—an unmatched combination of performance, affordability and eyegrabbing curves. The 2013 Ault Park Concours d’Elegance will celebrate 60 years of this American icon with a special display ranging from a 1953 model, one of just 300 built in that initial year, to a 2008 C6R, which dominated competition in the American Le Mans Series’ GT1 category. Corvette has a long history of international endurance racing success, and several examples of these victorious Vettes will be on display. For instance, Cincinnati enthusiast James Jaeger will present the race-prepped Corvette that the legendary “Flying Dentist” Dr. Dick Thompson helped pilot to a class win at the 1957 12 Hours of Sebring. What’s more, the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky., will be bringing its 1963 Z06, which was sponsored and raced by Gulf Oil executive Grady Davis. Among a host of interesting raceengineered bits and pieces, this “Split Window” features a 36-gallon fuel tank to help it minimize refueling stops during endurance races.
1965 Aston Martin DB6 Coupe
CELEBRATING 100 WITH 007 ASTON MARTIN, the British company responsible for some of the most exotic, limited-production automobiles ever to grace the world’s streets, turned 100 years old in 2013. What better way to celebrate the anniversary than by spending time with its most famous offspring, the 1964 DB5 used by none other than James Bond? As part of a special display of Aston Martins gathered to commemorate the company’s centennial, attendees to the 2013 Ault Park Concours d’Elegance can stand within inches of one of the actual movie cars that helped Bond, aka Sean Connery, foil the likes of Goldfinger, SPECTRE and other similarly villainous characters. Purchased at a London auction in 2010 for $4.7 million, this unique DB5 comes complete with its original spy gear goodies, such as fender-mounted machine guns, rotating blades that extend from its wheels and the classic red-button-activated ejector seat. www.OhioConcours.com • 13
