A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT STEPHEN COLE Casper, like many ghosts, has led a few lives. He started his theatrical life as a very different Casper musical which premiered in London. Matthew Ward (Composer) and I were in London for our musical After the Fair. A producer named Van Kaplan told us to go see it and meet the director. We did, but the director was indisposed that day. Months later, I got a call from that very same director, by the name of David Bell, who entreated me to talk about rewriting the show, which was to be produced on a grand scale by Van Kaplan for the Pittsburgh

"° y iÜ ` Ü Ì ƂÌ > Ì> `iÌiÀ i` Ì Ì ÀiÜÀ Ìi Casper, but to reinvent a whole new show. I proposed a whole new plot about a reality TV show and a deed and Magdalena and a contest and… they said yes! Within this whole new Casper musical, I was able to write Magdalena for the legendary Chita Rivera. We toured all the big summer theatres that year but after that Casper, the little ghost, went back into hiding. Oh sure, lots of other theatres wanted to do it, but it took Roderick Justice and the magic of TCT to bring Casper back to life. Matthew and I are so grateful. Here’s TCT Producing Artistic Director Roderick Justice with the creators to Casper The Friendly Musical and of Casper The Friendly Musical, Matt Ward and Stephen Cole, here’s to all of you who are about and orchestrators Luke Holloway and Dave Christensen. All were Ì iÝ«iÀ i Vi Ì i Ã Ü v À Ì i w ÀÃÌ hard at work at Ripley-Grier Studios in NYC developing TCT’s time. We hope you love it. spooktacular event of the season!

Casper

Flies Again TCT brings a friendly musical back to life. by Elaine Cox

It’s the most spooktacular night of the year! For most kids, whether they’re performers or not, Halloween is a magical time where they get to put on a costume and pretend to be someone else, if only for a few hours. That’s how The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s (TCT’s) Producing Ć‚Ă€ĂŒÂˆĂƒĂŒÂˆV ÂˆĂ€iVĂŒÂœĂ€] ,Âœ`iĂ€ÂˆVÂŽ Ă•ĂƒĂŒÂˆVi] wĂ€ĂƒĂŒ }ÂœĂŒ the idea to develop a version of Casper for young audiences: “For me, Halloween is such a special time. It’s the one day of the year kids do something theatrical, whether they realize it or not. I wanted to embrace the fun theatricality of the holiday. And the story of Casper is the perfect way to celebrate Halloween with your family!â€? When did you wĂ€ĂƒĂŒ “iiĂŒ >ĂƒÂŤiĂ€ ĂŒÂ…i Friendly Ghost? In the “noveltoonsâ€? of the 1940s? As a comic book caper in the 1950s? Maybe you met him on the animated show The New Casper Cartoon Show that aired on Saturday mornings throughout the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s? Starring alongside classic Hanna-Barbera characters like Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, and Quick Draw McGraw, Casper’s holiday specials were not to be missed. Or perhaps you grew up loving the 1995 vi>ĂŒĂ•Ă€i wÂ?“ Casper, ĂŒÂ…i wĂ€ĂƒĂŒ Â“ÂœĂ›Âˆi iĂ›iĂ€ to star a fully digital, computer-generated character in the leading role! aptation of Casper The Friendly Musical. Adapting and redeveloping musicals for the next generation is core to TCT’s mission to provide children and families with professional productions and engaging programming. In 2000, when composer Matthew Martin Ward and author Stephen Cole were in London opening their musical After the Fair, producer Van Kaplan asked them to see a different stage version of Casper playing in the West End, in hopes of producing a new version in the States. The very next summer, the pair opened Casper the Musical at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, starring Chita Rivera in the role of Magdalena Monteverde. The show went on to tour the United States, and a subsequent production in Australia, but then Casper hid out for a while. Over the years, ownership rights to the Casper brand have changed hands multiple times but have landed under the Classic Media umbrella, owned by DreamWorks Animation, which is a subsidiary of NBCUniversal. Author Stephen Cole says, “Nearly two decades later, it took the tenacious artistic vision of Roderick Justice and The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati to imagine yet another life for Casper as a production for young audiences. This time the focus will be on the kids and the high stakes they are involved in as they compete for a million dollars, but especially the lessons of friendship they learn from
