Awarded 5 stars in the Medicare Quality Care Indicators for overall quality care in nursing homes.

2013 and 2014 The United States Medicare program awards Mt. Washington Care Center a prestigious Five Star Quality Rating! The Five-Star Quality Rating System was created to help consumers, their families, and caregivers compare nursing homes more easily and help identify areas about which you may want to ask questions. This rating system is based on continued efforts as a result of the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA '87), a nursing home reform law, and more recent quality improvement campaigns such as the Advancing Excellence in America's Nursing Homes, a coalition of consumers, health care providers, and nursing home professionals.

Nursing home ratings are taken from the following three sources of data:

• Health Inspections • Staffing • Quality Measures Nursing homes vary in the quality of care and services they provide to their residents. Reviewing these three important areas is to measure nursing home quality. This information gives you a "snap shot" of the care individual nursing homes give. Mt. Washington Care Center is a 24 hour care skilled nursing facility in the Anderson area with an excellent reputation in for quality care of loved ones. We also provide short term rehabilitation services for those recovering from a hospital stay with the goal to return home. Family owned and operated nursing facility for over 30 years.

THINK BIG FOR

SMALL BUSINESS

T

he Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce wants to remind you to “Shop Local.” Once people realize the community reinvestment impact of shopping locally, it makes so much sense. On average when a consumer shops locally, 75 percent of the money spent stays in the local community, compared to only 40 percent when consumers shop at a larger retailer. Small businesses buy products and services from other small businesses, reinvesting money into the community.

THINK ABOUT IT! A LOCALLY OWNED SHOP WILL:

» Use a local accountant for payroll and taxes » Use a local printer to print letterhead, business cards, banners, etc. » Purchase business insurance from a local agent » Use local agencies for marketing and promotion The list goes on and on with examples of how locally owned businesses reinvest money into the community in which they operate. This is why when at all possible, it is good to support the little guys on your block. It is the duty of a local chamber of commerce to support and promote locally owned businesses year-round. They are the backbone of American business and the driving force behind a healthy economy. 10 ANDERSON AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

ere’s some good news: Better traffic flow and reduced delays at the busy Five Mile Road and Beechmont Avenue intersection are anticipated after a traffic improvement project finishes up in 2016. Work on the Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI), a project that also is expected to help reduce accidents, started this spring. Expectations are that most work will be wrapped up by late November 2016. The project will cause delays. While traffic will be maintained during construction, Assistant Administrator Steve Sievers wants residents to be prepared to allow for extra travel time. The CFI requires a traffic pattern change involving travel lanes and will include a series of medians with traffic signals that will enable pedestrians to cross all sides of the intersection. This innovative improvement has been under discussion for nearly a decade. Funding was provided by federal transportation grants, the Ohio Public Works Commission, ODOT, the Hamilton County Engineer’s Office and Anderson Township. To learn more, view a short informational video and intersection plans at www.AndersonTownship.org, and search “Continuous Flow Intersection.”

Once complete in 2017, the new 155,000-square-foot store will be the largest Kroger store in the country. Expanded departments will include produce, meat, deli and bakery. The store will also feature a wine and growler bar plus a separate wine and beer tasting area. Anderson will also offer Kroger’s online shopping program, ClickList. Two retail buildings totaling approximately 18,500 square feet will accompany the newly expanded Kroger as the Shoppes at Anderson Towne Center. Open areas and landscaping will create a streetscape feel and an inviting atmosphere. The 12,500-square-foot building on Beechmont Avenue will be flanked by two new-to-market fast-casual restaurants. The 5,800-squarefoot building along Wolfangel will be a freestanding, full-service restaurant. All three restaurants will have ample outside seating, and common areas can be utilized by both shoppers and tenants. Kroger’s two priorities for this development are to create a vibrant dining and shopping destination for its neighbors and an enhanced experience for its customers.

he American Dream is thriving in Anderson Township. Located in the southeastern corner of Hamilton County between the Ohio and Little Miami rivers, the township’s roots go back to the late 18th century when pioneers settled along the Little Miami River. Their foresight and hard work provided the foundation for what today is one of the area’s most desirable places to live, play and work. Through the vision and commitment of its leaders and citizens, the township is enjoying an economic boom that is bringing millions of dollars in private investment to the area. Anderson Towne Center and nearby Mercy Health - Anderson Hospital are the focus of a $150 million renovation and expansion that will include a large infusion of new retail and office space. Throughout Anderson, housing values, from attractive starter houses to spacious estate homes, continue to increase, and the commitment to parks, Greenspace and hiking trails remain a priority. Add to the mix top-rated schools, excellent health care and a range of services for residents of all ages, and it’s easy to see why folks who call Anderson home are living the good life.

GOVERNMENT T

houghtful planning is a hallmark of Anderson Township government. Attention to detail characterizes the community’s approach to its past and future, enabling smart growth and careful preservation of its assets, such as Greenspace and its historic treasures. Governed by a three-person elected board of trustees, Anderson is a full-service township with its own public works and fire departments. The township contracts for policing services with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Anderson Township leaders have sought not only to engage but also to involve residents in local decision-making activities. Some 100 volunteers serve on eight citizen committees that advise the trustees on key issues ranging from zoning to transportation and economic development. With Beechmont Avenue as a major hub and shopping destination, Anderson’s leaders have worked to balance commercial activity with the community’s other appealing qualities, such as parks, safe neighborhoods and attractive community centers. In recent years, Anderson Township has advanced collaborative efforts, encouraging publicprivate partnerships to promote its vision of the future. By the end of 2017, more than $165 million worth of infrastructure and redevelopment projects will have transformed the business core of the community. These improvements include a renovated Anderson Towne Center with new retail options, a movie theater, new restaurants and a fitness center. A redeveloped Kroger will be one of the largest in the country. Responsible, efficient and conservative governance has paid off. Anderson remains a solid investment for homeowners and has won many awards for its plans and overall quality of life. Property taxes are kept in check, while the township maintains high quality public services and holds the highest rating from Moody’s Investors Service. As part of its effort to enhance its quality of life, Anderson continues expansion of township hike and bike trails, resulting in a popular connection of walkable paths. The Anderson Trails centerpiece is the Five Mile Trail, a 2.5-mile hilly trail that winds through wooded areas and open fields. New this year is the opening of a scenic 3.3-mile extension of the Little Miami Scenic Trail. This route connects to the Little Miami Golf Center along a path adjacent to Ohio 32 and links Anderson with the 75-mile trail. In development is an ambitious sidewalk project planned for the summer of 2016 on the east side of Wolfangel from Beechmont Avenue to State Road. This link will provide more options for thousands of residents who enjoy walking. Anderson’s leaders continue to focus on programs and policies that support an enhanced lifestyle in a community that respects its past while vigorously planning for a better future.

ENTERTAINMENT &

RECREATION A

nderson Township has a wealth of indoor and outdoor recreational and entertainment options for anyone looking to stay fit or just relax and have a good time. Coney Island, Belterra Gaming and Entertainment Center and Riverbend are major regional attractions. The township’s access to parks, Greenspace, and hiking and biking trails is unsurpassed in Greater Cincinnati. All this adds up to a reality residents happily celebrate: Anderson is a great place to play. The township is a role model of stewardship when it comes to protecting and preserving its Greenspace and providing an everincreasing network of trails for the enjoyment of its residents. Today, nearly 700 acres throughout the township are dedicated Greenspace. These natural areas are perfect for hiking and exploring nature in a variety of settings, from wooded hillsides to sweeping views of the Ohio and Little Miami rivers. The Anderson Trails program, begun nearly 25 years ago, has grown into 18 miles of sidewalk and trails for hikers and bikers. The main artery is the Five Mile Trail, a 2.5-mile hilly span that links the Turpin High School area to Five Mile Road where walkers and bikers can access Anderson Center,

Anderson Towne Center and Beechmont Avenue. A number of new links and several in the planning stages will allow thousands of residents direct access to the network of trails. A new three-mile extension links Anderson to the Little Miami Scenic Trail and a recently completed 1.5 mile portion of the 14-mile Ohio River Trail project will provide a connection to New Richmond and Cincinnati. The Anderson Township Park District’s 10 parks are the center of community activities throughout the year. More than 500 acres of parkland are home to athletic fields, playgrounds, basketball and volleyball courts, paved trails, picnic shelters and dog runs. The newest addition offers six pickleball courts at Clear Creek Park. Year-round events take place at the indoor Beech Acres RecPlex, and the Beech Acres Park amphitheater is the site of a summer concert series. Summer camps, adult and youth sports leagues and special events, such as an Easter Egg Hunt and the new Heritage Day at Johnson Park, round out the wide range of offerings that get the family outdoors and moving. Golfers have a choice of several courses in the area, including the Legendary Run Golf Course and an 18-hole championship course for members at the Coldstream Country Club.

For more than a century, Coney Island has been the place to head for summer fun, whether it’s a day at Sunlite Pool—one of the nation’s largest—or enjoying classic amusement park rides. This year Typhoon Tower, a huge, interactive water play structure, will open in the northeast corner of the waterpark complex. The tower features two twisting, 130-foot waterslides, more than 70 interactive water play stations and a 33-foot-tall Hydro Storm. Next door, Riverbend Music Center is the summer home of the Cincinnati Pops orchestra as well as the site of a full summer roster of nationally known pop and rock artists and groups on tour. For those who prefer indoor fun, Belterra Park Gaming and Entertainment Center features seasonal live thoroughbred and yearround simulcast racing plus several dining options, a choice of more than 1,300 games, a new gaming terrace and live music on the weekends. This year will see the debut of a movie theater in Anderson Towne Center. The luxury theater will allow patrons to enjoy dinner and a movie in one location with premium seating that can be reserved in advance, as well as a full-service bar and dining menu in addition to standard movie eats.

Currently, Anderson Hospital is undergoing a major expansion that will add 90 private patient rooms, an 18-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit, more dining options, and a new lobby and waiting areas. A new tower addition will add five floors of care, including a 21-bed, medical-surgical intensive care unit, expanded surgical suite and family waiting area. Three new 30-bed units will be devoted to surgical and orthopaedic patients. Hospital leadership anticipates accepting patients into the tower in late August. By having a fully integrated electronic medical record, Priority Care can access patients’ background medical information and communicate with their physician to provide quality, coordinated care. Also, should a patient require additional testing, some testing can be done on-site, including lab work and X-rays, which can immediately be interpreted by a radiologist at the hospital. In addition, 11 Forest Hills seniors were named finalists in the annual National Merit Scholarship Program, an honor fewer than 1 percent of the country’s high school students achieve. Nagel Middle School has been named an Ohio and National School to Watch as a middle school that is considered academically excellent, developmentally responsive and socially equitable. Also worthy of note: 77 percent of the FHSD teaching staff have a master’s degree or higher, and 51 percent have been with the district for 10 or more years. MT. WASHINGTON SCHOOL

ook around Anderson Township and you’ll see it’s a new day for this suburban community. A season of construction and change will yield a different look for the core business area of Anderson Township, with luxury apartments, a nine-screen dine-in movie theater, new restaurants and outdoor plaza gathering spaces to be built in the very near future. By 2018, Anderson Township will see the tangible result of almost $200 million in private-public partnership. The community also is on track for infrastructure improvements: new sidewalks, Beechmont Avenue improvements and

streetscape amenities in the Downtown Anderson Plan area, between Towne Center Way and Asbury Road. Changes also include new medical office buildings, a renovated and expanded Mercy Health - Anderson Hospital and three new restaurants slated for The Shoppes at Anderson Towne Center. Anderson Township Trustee Vice President Josh Gerth sees reasons for excitement when discussing ongoing and planned improvements in his hometown. “Timing is everything in development, and the time is now for Anderson Township,” he says. “Not

only are we reaping the rewards of the seeds planted years ago but also we are capitalizing on the unprecedented activity and interest that we are seeing today. Our township is aligning with the new suburban-urbanization development model that is taking place in high-growth areas all over this country.” While construction and travel delays will occur for a period of time, Assistant Administrator for Operations Steve Sievers notes, “The end result will be worth the disruption and result in something very exciting for our residents.” Here are the details on everything planned in the next two years:

NEW DEVELOPMENT 2016

OFFICE BUILDINGS Anderson Professional Centre Expansion: Some 13,000 square

feet of new medical space will be added to the Anderson Professional Centre, along with a three-level public parking garage that will help provide parking for busy Anderson Center events. Jon Hemmer, Hemmer Management Group president, says the parking garage and shell of the expansion could be complete before the end of 2016. Anderson Professional Centre by Hemmer (rendering)

PRIVATE DEVELOPMENT Anderson Towne Center Kroger expansion: While remaining open during

construction, the Anderson Towne Center Kroger will expand 50,000 square feet, making it one of the largest Kroger stores in the nation. Shoppes at Anderson Towne Center: Kroger also plans a new 18,000square-foot retail development at the corner of Beechmont and Wolfangel. Current tenants include two fast casual restaurants and one large full-service restaurant, mixed with other businesses, says Terry Ohnmeis, retail specialist for Cushman & Wakefield and leasing agent. The two plazas, outdoor seating and pocket parks will put this corner on the map—a “Main and Main” area, he says—which is aligned with the township’s vision of the Downtown Anderson Plan. Mercy Health - Anderson Hospital Patient Tower and Renovation: A $74 million construction project is set to wrap up in fall 2016. Additions include 90 new private rooms and an intensive care area in a five-floor patient tower, a new medical-surgical intensive care unit, and other renovations. Patients may move into the tower as soon as late August 2016. Movie Theater and Anderson Towne Center retail: Under construction is a

nine-screen, dine-in theater that will act as the northern endcap to the streetscape of the Towne Center. More retail and restaurants will be added. The clock tower will be moved, and a new traffic circle will be created along the streetscape.

LUXURY LIVING One Anderson Place: One hundred eighty upscale apartments are proposed for

a spot north of Anderson Towne Center, along with a 330-car parking garage. This seven-story building, a $20 million investment by One Anderson Place, LLC, would house one- and two-bedroom apartments with high-level amenities.

Medical Office Building: On

the south side of Beechmont Avenue is a 42,000-square-foot medical office building currently under construction by Al Neyer, Inc. This sits on property formerly housing two businesses and a parcel owned by Anderson Township.

LARGE PUBLIC PROJECTS Continuous Flow Intersection:

Beechmont Avenue will be no stranger to upgrades in 2016. A major project scheduled is the construction of the long-awaited Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI), slated for completion by the end of the year at the Beechmont-Five Mile intersection. This busy corner, which consistently ranks as one of the top county intersections for crashes, sees nearly 60,000 cars per day. Enhanced safety, reduced travel delays and better traffic flow are some of the projected outcomes of the CFI design alteration, along with increased pedestrian access. In the planning stages for nearly a decade, the $3.5 million CFI improvement is made possible through funding from federal, state, county and local sources. WWW.ANDERSONAREACHAMBER.ORG 27

SIDEWALK PROJECTS

ROADWAY PROJECTS

Wolfangel Sidewalk Project: More than half a mile of new

Towne Center Way: Significant construc-

sidewalk on the east side of Wolfangel Road will provide hundreds of residents with pedestrian access to township retail spaces, Anderson Hospital, Anderson Towne Center and more. This key north-south connection will allow residents to easily catch the Metro or connect to the Anderson Trails network of bike and hike trails. Beechmont Avenue Sidewalk Links: The intersection of Beechmont

and Five Mile will receive new sidewalks, as well as other links to be built in 2017 on the south side of the road between Forest Road and Shangrila Drive. This connection will provide a safer way for residents to get to the Anderson Towne Center and other destinations on Beechmont’s south side.

tion in and around the Anderson Towne Center will shift the flow on Towne Center Way around the shopping area to Wolfangel Road. Anderson Township will reconstruct much of the roadway in 2017, including additional sidewalks. Downtown Anderson Streetscape:

Roadway and streetscape upgrades are planned in 2017 for Beechmont Avenue between Anderson Towne Center and Asbury Road. Improvements include new lighting, traffic signals, sidewalks and a roadway narrowing consistent with the Downtown Anderson Plan. Wolfangel Road and Beechmont Avenue: While sidewalks are being added

to Wolfangel Road, further enhancements to the area include the addition of a right turn lane from Wolfangel to Beechmont, by Kroger. A new bus pull-off will be added to

the east side of Wolfangel near Beechmont, which will improve safety and traffic flow on Beechmont and Wolfangel. A right turn lane will also be constructed on Beechmont into the Shoppes at Anderson Towne Center development. Construction begins in late May 2016. ODOT Safety Improvements: Many

curb cuts along Beechmont Avenue, which contribute to crashes and slow traffic flow, will be eliminated starting July 2016 through 2017. The Ohio Department of Transportation will complete safety improvements along the corridor from Anderson Towne Center to the Clermont County border. More than 25 driveways will be eliminated or modified, including several between Asbury and Five Mile roads. At the Eight Mile Road and Beechmont Intersection, the travel lanes heading westbound will be narrowed to allow for a new right turn lane heading north onto Eight Mile. Additional sidewalk links will be introduced in this area as well. Q
