elcome to the 2017 edition of the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce Membership Directory and Business Resource Guide. We are pleased to again partner with Cincinnati Magazine and Anderson Township government to deliver this valuable and informative community publication. We hope you will enjoy it and hold on to it all year. The Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce serves the businesses and residents of Anderson Township, Village of Newtown, Mt. Washington and western Clermont County. Economic development continues to be the big buzz in the community, and there are many 2017 projects, including the redevelopment of the Anderson Towne Center with a family entertainment facility, coffee shop, jeweler and a number of retail businesses. In addition, Kroger will begin the expansion of its existing space, as well as developing the land to their east into additional parking, restaurant and retail space on the corner of Wolfangel and Beechmont. TriHealth continues to expand its presence in Anderson by adding a new 13,000-squarefoot surgical center between the two Professional Center buildings. Hemmer Construction is also adding a three-level parking garage behind the theater. We strive to be a leader in the community and want to connect with the businesses and residents in every way. Social media has been a great communication tool for us, and we encourage everyone to Like and Follow us! We also encourage you to visit our website at www.AndersonAreaChamber.org. It is updated daily with events, plus you can search area businesses to help you shop local as well as search for employment opportunities. It is a mobile-friendly site, so it can be accessed through any mobile device. The chamber provides its members with an assortment of useful benefits that include marketing opportunities to promote your business—such as a listing in this magazine and on the chamber website directory—top-notch networking events, discounted rates on workers’ comp and medical benefits, and professional development seminars to help businesses grow. We strive to create new events, programs and partnerships to educate, stimulate and maximize the return that our members receive. We highly encourage everyone to shop local and support our members who support us.

1. Partner with local businesses/ organizations within your community. Look around in your community and identify businesses or organizations that are in need of help or support. Is there an animal shelter that needs donations? Do the schools need help with sponsorships, guest speakers or internships? Does the food pantry need additional resources to keep shelves filled? 2. Get your employees involved. Ask your employees to give suggestions re-
garding potential organizations your business can assist. Once you have identified the beneficiary, offer your employees an opportunity to volunteer during work hours or offer incentives if the event is outside the workday. Volunteer events can provide team building and leadership development, which benefit your business. 3. Share your volunteerism with your customers. Once you have determined your course of giving back, let your current and future customers know what you are doing via social media posts, your newsletter and website. This will show your concern for your community—a community that will, in turn, support your business. In addition, you offer your customers a chance to get involved with your project by donating their time or resources.

THINK BIG
FOR SMALL BUSINESS
T
he Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce wants to remind you to “Shop Local.” Once people realize the community reinvestment impact of shopping locally, it makes so much sense. On average when a consumer shops locally, 75 percent of the money spent stays in the local community, compared to only 40 percent when consumers shop at a larger retailer. Small businesses buy products and services from other small businesses, reinvesting money into the community.
THINK ABOUT IT! A LOCALLY OWNED SHOP WILL:
» Use
a local accountant for payroll and taxes
» Use
a local printer to print letterhead, business cards, banners, etc.
» Purchase
business insurance from a local agent
» Use
local agencies for marketing and promotion

This is why when at all possible, it is good to support the little guys on your block. It is the duty of a local chamber of commerce to support and promote locally owned businesses year-round. ere’s some good news: Better traffic flow and reduced delays at the busy Five Mile Road and Beechmont Avenue intersection are anticipated after a traffic improvement project finishes up in early 2017. The Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI) is a project that is expected to help reduce accidents and increase traffic flow. Expectations are that most work will be wrapped up by May 2017. ANDERSON A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY
A
nderson is the place to be. Whether you’re starting a family or deciding where to locate a new business, you’ll find plenty to love about Greater Anderson. Tucked in the picturesque southeastern corner of Hamilton County between the Ohio and Little Miami rivers, the region’s roots go back to the late 18th century when pioneers settled along the Little Miami River. Their foresight and hard work provided the foundation for Anderson residents to realize their own American Dreams in what’s become one of the area’s most desirable places to live, work and play. Economically, the region’s future is bright. In 2017, Anderson will boast more than $165 million in business renovations and expansions; already, new retail and office space in Anderson Towne Center and nearby Mercy Health–Anderson Hospital bring new life to “Downtown Anderson.” Millions more dollars in private investment and the collaborative vision of committed leaders and citizens ensure there is always plenty of opportunity for entrepreneurs. ANDERSON TOWNSHIP
GOVERNMENT T
houghtful planning is a hallmark of Anderson Township government. Attention to detail characterizes the community’s approach to its past and its ability to envision its future, enabling smart growth and careful preservation of community assets. Governed by a three-person elected board of trustees, Anderson operates its own public works and fire departments. The township contracts for policing services from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. The busy commercial corridor of Beechmont Avenue, a hub and shopping destination, continues to undergo major redevelopment and improvement. Anderson government has worked to balance this growing commercial activity with the community’s other outstanding features, including parks, safe neighborhoods and attractive community centers. In recent years, Anderson Township has focused on collaborative efforts, encouraging public-private partnerships to promote its vision of the future. By the beginning of 2018, more than $165 million worth of infrastructure and redevelopment projects will have transformed the business core of the community. Responsible, efficient and conservative governance has paid off in Anderson Township. Property taxes are kept in check while the township maintains high quality public services— quality that’s backed up by the top rating from Moody’s Investors Service. Anderson remains a solid investment for homeowners and has won many awards for its plans and overall quality of life. In 2016–2017, trustees launched several initiatives to help residents lower basic electricity and trash-recycling service costs. As part of its effort to enhance its quality of life, Anderson continues expansion of township hike and bike trails, resulting in a popular connection of walkable paths. The newest addition is the 3.3-mile extension of the Little Miami Scenic Trail. Further work is planned on the Ohio River Trail, which will link Cincinnati’s Lunken Airport with Anderson Township and end in New Richmond. A section of this path currently provides a scenic tour of Anderson’s entertainment district between Sutton and Five Mile roads. Anderson Township leaders engage and involve residents in local decision-making activities. Some 110 volunteers serve on 10 citizen committees that advise the trustees on key issues ranging from zoning to transportation and economic development. The newest group, the Senior Center Advisory Committee, focuses on the Anderson Township Senior Center, which provides many critical services to older adults, plus programs, trips and parties. Anderson Township assumed management of center operations in July 2016. Anderson’s leadership continues to concentrate on programs and policies that support a high quality of life, enhancing life in a community that respects its past while actively charting a better future.

hange and redevelopment, starting several years ago in Anderson Township, have not let up. And for a year or so at least, more movement in the township’s core business area is expected. So says Josh Gerth, president of Anderson Township’s Board of Trustees, who likens this stage of growth to a puzzle starting to take shape with most of the edge pieces finally in place now in the middle of 2017. And by the conclusion of 2018, residents “will not only be able to see the end result but will 26 ANDERSON AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
get to experience all it has to offer,” Gerth says. This ongoing season of change and development, totaling more than $165 million in over a dozen public and private projects, has seen the township’s economy bolstered by the infusion of investment in health and medical services, entertainment and dining opportunities. Most would agree, that’s a far cry from its image in the 1990s. “I think the momentum is really accelerating,” notes Gregg Fusaro, chair of the township’s Economic Development Commit-
tee. “The things we have been working on continue to improve, and we continue to see more interest in the township as some of these other key projects come to fruition.” Gerth sees positive years ahead, filled with good things for the township. “The coming year should be a very exciting one as we not only see the hard work and effort come together on existing projects but also explore the ideas of some of the puzzle pieces we were missing and hopefully uncover and move forward” with other ideas, he says.

PRIVATE DEVELOPMENT Anderson Towne Center Kroger expansion
Work is expected to start in the second half of the year on the 50,000-square-foot expansion of the Anderson Towne Center Kroger, which will make this the largest Kroger store in the country, according to Patty Leesemann, Kroger public affairs manager for the Cincinnati/Dayton Division. The updated 155,000-square-foot store is expected to open in 2018 and will stay open during construction. Anderson Towne Center ongoing redevelopment
Major change is evident in recent months at the Anderson Towne Center, and more is on the horizon. Recent additions to the site in various stages of development
include Starbucks, Kay Jewelers, Verizon Wireless and Bentley Pet Supplies. Other new tenants already operating are Leyla’s Mediterranean Grill and Walton Creek Boutique. Work also is under way at the Sky Zone Trampoline Park, which could open this summer. Shoppes at Anderson Towne Center
Construction is expected to start this summer on one of the larger retail developments planned in recent years—the Shoppes at Anderson Towne Center at Wolfangel Road and Beechmont Avenue. Announced tenants include The Eagle (American fare), McAlister’s Deli, (fastcasual) and Currito Burritos (international burritos), with one or two more tenants yet unannounced. Terry Ohnmeis, senior associate at Frost & Wakefield, says interest in this development has been very strong.
Construction should be substantially complete soon on the Anderson Professional Center project, which is expanding TriHealth’s Five Mile Road campus by creating a state-of-the-art outpatient surgery center. This 73,000-square-foot integrated physician office and medical complex will offer a broad range of medical, surgical and diagnostic services in one location. The expansion connects two existing office buildings and includes a new three-story parking garage on the east side of the building. The garage’s 200 additional parking spaces will be available starting sometime in May. Mercy Health–Anderson Hospital Acute Inpatient Rehab Unit
On the heels of opening its three-story patient tower, Mercy Health–Anderson Hospital recently opened a $1 million acute inpatient rehabilitation unit. The 20-bed facility treats patients who have experienced disabling injury or illness and require physical and cognitive rehab programs before returning home. This facility is the only acute rehab center on the east side of Cincinnati. WWW.ANDERSONAREACHAMBER.ORG 27

walks, streetscape lighting, landscaping, a new turn lane at Wolfangel and new traffic signals, which is consistent with the awardwinning Downtown Anderson Plan. The goal of the plan is to enhance the character of this portion of Beechmont by creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment, which will be compatible to new retail spaces and public spaces along the roadway.
Continuous Flow Intersection
Roadway construction during 2016 at the intersection of Five Mile and Beechmont Avenue will hopefully all be forgotten this summer once the Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI) comes online in mid-2017. Engineered to upgrade safety and eliminate delays at the busy midpoint of Beechmont Avenue, the $3.5 million CFI also allows for better pedestrian access and traffic flow.
Beechmont Avenue sidewalk links
Work continues on Beechmont Avenue sidewalk links on the south side of the road between Forest Road and Shangrila Drive. Improved pedestrian access from upgrades to Five Mile and Beechmont Avenue’s busy intersection will allow more connections to improve biking and walking in this general area.
“Downtown Anderson” improvements
The section area of Beechmont Avenue between Asbury Road and the Anderson Towne Center that is dubbed “Downtown Anderson” starts to take shape this year with roadway and streetscape upgrades planned for construction this summer. The project features a narrower roadway, which will use existing excess pavement for side-
will be reduced thanks to an Ohio Department of Transportation project along Beechmont Avenue, extending into Clermont County. Besides helping to ease traffic flow, the elimination or modification of more than 20 driveways will boost safety. Additionally, a new right turn is planned for traveling north onto Eight Mile Road from westbound Beechmont, as are new sidewalks links in this vicinity. Work is expected to start this summer. Towne Center Way: A project upgrad-
ing the remaining portion of Towne Center Way (formerly known as Ring Road) begins this year and into 2018. Plans include improved drainage and lighting, removal of dips in the road and the addition of sidewalks. Also, many residents look forward to the easier point of access to be added to connect drivers to the Anderson Towne Center, Anderson Center and adjoining developments. Q
