here’s more than one way to do college. Two years, four years, part-time, online—the road to a degree has many routes. Today, more than ever, potential students carefully analyze the options that might best help them meet their goals.

in a meaningful way,” says Beth Novak, associate dean for student success. Or perhaps you’re a busy college graduate seeking advancement. Disciplined and self-directed individuals can earn an advanced degree in about 18 months via Thomas More’s TAP program, says Enrollment Manager Judy Bautista. Hands-on learners with a taste for cooking might find their mojo at Cincinnati State’s Midwest Culinary Institute, where “cooperative education is a degree requirement,” notes Program Chair Jeffrey Sheldon. Nursing candidates can explore the hospital-based curricula at Good Samaritan College of Nursing and Health Science, where the hybrid format of the RN to BSN program offers the best of both worlds of online and in-class experience, says Linda Hayes, dean of enrollment management. Here’s how three very different students chose their degree paths:
DREW ESSIG, OHIO UNIVERSITY SENIOR, SCREENWRITING AND PRODUCING MAJOR, SCRIPPS COLLEGE OF COMMUNICATION What led you to Ohio University and your particular path of study? It was a combination of things but mostly the Honors Tutorial College (HTC) and the opportunity to do a thesis on something of my choice. I didn’t know too much about the Scripps College and the opportunities for screenwriting and movies and television production in the media school, but I found out a lot about that my sophomore year in college, and I’m really excited! The first serious path I considered was television screenwriting. I like writing. I’ve always enjoyed poetry and short stories, but I love the visual element of screenwriting for movies and TV. Just having the need for the freedom to create is hard to explain, but it’s what drove me to writing in the first place.
The Screenwriting and Producing major is very new. My class is the first to have the opportunity to graduate with this degree. What do you like about this specific program? The school has a good number of classes to take about screenwriting and just about television in general. I’m in the Scripps College of Communication, but I’m also in the Honors Tutorial College*. HTC is essentially a path that leads to a senior thesis. It’s typically a traditional paper. In my year, I think I’m the only one who is doing a creative element. I am analyzing a number of television shows: what worked and what hasn’t worked over the last 15 years. Then I’ll write a pilot that I will argue will be successful. On his internship in Los Angeles last fall: The entertainment industry shifts so much. New things are always happening, and the only way to really understand

how it is evolving is to actually be in the middle of it and work with the people who have gone through these changes before. The internship program lets us experience this type of structure, which just can’t be taught in a class.
AMANDA COOPER, MBA CANDIDATE, THOMAS MORE COLLEGE ADULT AND PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM (TAP) ONLINE PROGRAM
What are your hopes and goals?
Why did you choose Thomas More TAP and distance learning in particular?
I’d like to luck into a really good writing room and work as a PA [production assistant] in a show that I really like and just get on board really fast. I’m hoping that my college experience will help me become a showrunner [the ultimate creative voice of a show] as quickly as possible, because that’s my goal. *Based on the British tutorial model developed at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, Ohio University’s Honors Tutorial College provides rigorous and individualized study for highly motivated students.
I just graduated with a bachelor’s degree and that was on-site learning. I am a single mother of a 7-year-old boy, and toward the end of the bachelor’s program, he was like “No more, Mom. No more.” It was every Tuesday and Thursday night from 6 to 10. With this program, I don’t have to go to campus, and I can still get my master’s. Since I was on campus for my bachelor’s, it was just easier to stay at Thomas More, because I had already been there. It was like I took an extended break.
What do you like about this specific program? I work full time. It’s just the best option for me because it’s flexible. There are deadlines when assignments are due, but I can go when I want to go: after I get my son somewhere, or after he goes to bed, or before he gets up on Saturday morning. I don’t have to be there at 6 p.m. on the dot every Tuesday. TMC uses Moodle as their online learning center, and that’s where we check in on Mondays. You go to the website and see what assignments are there for the week and when they’re due. You upload everything. Everybody at TMC is willing to help you out. I think overall they want you to succeed. They want you to finish. And whatever they can do to help you, that’s what they are going to do. I will finish in January with an MBA. I can’t wait!
Much more about you. Morehead State University delivers a strong and affordable education for friendly, ambit ious students who thrive in a student-focused learni ng environment defined by small class sizes and facult y committed to teaching and student success.

What are your hopes and goals? Hopefully, I’ll get a really awesome, goodpaying job. But more than that, I think that I just want to do something that helps somebody else. I don’t have a clear-cut definition of what that job is or what I want that job to be, whether it be management or some kind of recruitment. If I can do this, anybody can do it. It’s hard, and it’s work, but it can be done. I think it’s good to know about it. KELLI ALLEN, NEW GRADUATE, MIDWEST CULINARY INSTITUTE AT CINCINNATI STATE, ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED BUSINESS IN CULINARY ARTS Why did you choose MCI and your particular path of study? I chose this path because I’ve had a passion for cooking for a long time and have
worked in several kitchens throughout high school and after my first years in college. After I graduated with a BS in History and a minor in Biology, I got a 9-to-5 job outside of food service, and I just really missed it. Then I learned about this program, and I knew it was something I had to do. What did you like about this specific program? I liked that faculty and staff were very involved in what we were doing. They pushed us to do something different every day. My favorite class was international cuisine. We spent each week of the semester learning about different cultures, agriculture, and also cooking their traditional dishes. And the timing was great. I was there for two years and one summer. I would also add that the co-op program is remarkable. Before I arrived in
Johnson City, Tennessee, I had secured two jobs at upscale steak houses thanks to my education at MCI, including selfmarketing and my mentorship under Chef Michelle Brown [of Jag’s Steak and Seafood] and her sous chefs. I just think it’s a great program, and if anybody else is interested in cooking for a career, know that it is a profession. It’s not just working in a kitchen anymore. We are professionals, and I encourage people to do it. What are your hopes and goals? I was born in Cincinnati but raised in Nashville. I’m going to work at two different restaurants in Johnson City, and I guess short-term my goal is to be an executive chef in probably five to eight years. After that experience, I want to buy a restaurant.

hen looking for the right place to pursue your degree, the range of options can be as overwhelming as it is wide. As you fill out college applications, consider the basics of scholarly satisfaction before you seal the envelope: Location – The area surrounding your campus will influence your life as a college student. Visit schools in person to get an authentic feel for a variety of locations. The goal is to find your ideal work and play environment—whether that’s a closeknit college town or a big city.

Major – Meet with a counselor to research well-established programs in your area of study. If you’re unsure of what major to pursue, many colleges won’t require immediate declaration. Paul Stelzer, assistant director of admissions at Otterbein University, weighs in: “It’s also very common for students to change their major at least once after they’ve arrived on
