Welcome

A Letter from the Governor

Greetings, On behalf of the State of Ohio, my wife Karen and I welcome you to the 40th annual Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance, one of the longest-running automotive celebrations of its kind in the country. Ohio is proud to host this internationally recognized event, which showcases some of the rarest and historically significant automobiles and motorcycles in the world. This year’s show brings back “the best of the best” from previous years, including the Best of Show winner of the first Concours. Also featured are cars honoring the 50th anniversary of the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird, many of which were built here in Ohio. This year’s show also brings custom and factory-built tuner cars to the field—a first for a national concours d’elegance. The automobile industry has been a significant contributor to Ohio’s manufacturing heritage since the early days of motoring. The legacies of innovation and quality continue in today’s modern factories producing world-class parts and automobiles across the state. The proceeds from the Cincinnati Concours support Juvenile Arthritis research and assistance programs of the Arthritis Foundation, benefiting the many children and their families in the Southern Ohio region who are afflicted with this debilitating disease. We hope you enjoy your visit to Ault Park—one of Cincinnati’s many beautiful city parks—to view the spectacular vehicles on display, and we thank you for supporting this grand event. To those visiting from out of state, it is our hope that you will return again and again to the Queen City and the great state of Ohio. Best wishes for another memorable event! Sincerely,

John R. Kasich Governor

Welcome

Dear Friends, On behalf of the City of Cincinnati, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance. During the past 40 years, this event has attracted thousands of spectators and participants from across the world as one of the longest running traditions to celebrate automotive excellence. I am proud that the Queen City is host to such a unique and renowned occasion. I am thrilled to take a trip down memory lane as the theme of this year’s event is “Celebrating 40 Years of Automotive Excellence.” The greatest award-winning vehicles from the past 40 years will be featured, including the best of show winner from the inaugural Concours d’Elegance held at the estate of William and Helen Williams on June 18, 1978. Auto enthusiasts and aficionados will enjoy special displays from Camaro and Firebird, and a debut appearance from tuners. In addition to this showcase, the Concours committee does an outstanding job of bringing new and necessary awareness to the fight against juvenile arthritis for our local families. The Cincinnati chapter of the Arthritis Foundation receives donations from this event crucial to supporting research and advancements for this disease. Our community admires your commitment and advocacy. While you are with us, I invite you to experience as much of our city as possible. With our 52 diverse neighborhoods, each with its own fascinating architecture, culture, business center, and personality, I am positive you will enjoy your time in Cincinnati. After a fabulous Concours weekend, I hope you will take time to visit the many attractions and amenities that have made our city a popular tourist destination over the years. Thank you for coming to Cincinnati to enjoy the 40th Concours d’Elegance. I know you will leave with new friends and new wonderful experiences of the Queen City. Welcome

Letter from the Chairman

I

t is my great pleasure to welcome you to Cincinnati’s 40th annual Concours d’ Elegance! Known for many years as the Ault Park Concours, we’ve changed our name to the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance to promote greater national recognition of the show’s location and to promote the city’s long-running tradition of celebrating automotive excellence. Always known as an innovative Concours, we were the first show to feature classes for motorcycles and Asian cars. This year, along with celebrating the 50-year anniversary of the Camaro and Firebird, we’re making another leading move with the creation of two new classes of “tuner” cars. Many of us baby boomers may remember these cars as those that were heavily modified for speed and performance and authorized by their respective factories with names such as Yenko, Nickey Chevrolet, and Baldwin Motion. Millennials also know tuners, but as the newer cars that are heavily modified, typically Asian, and bear such names as NISMO, JDM, Skyline, and VR32 GT-R. Finally, to celebrate this milestone year, we’ve brought back many of the class and best-of-show winning cars of the past 40 years. It will be another outstanding show field. While you’re here, grab a cool one at our popular craft beer garden and enjoy a fun-filled walk in the park, surrounded by some of the most significant and beautiful vehicles you’ll see anywhere in the country.

Enjoy the show!

Welcome

From the Chief Judge

O

n behalf of our entire judging team, welcome to the 40th annual Concours d’Elegance. Our show field is filled with magnificent vehicles from all eras and diverse marques. The judges are challenged to choose the best entries in each class based on a number of factors, starting with the elegance of design, presence among the class, and uniqueness of engineering. Also, condition, correctness, and history are significantly weighted into the final decisions of Best of Class and additional class awards. The judging team is also responsible for selecting the winners of the many special awards, particularly the two Best of Show trophies—the first from the traditional classes and the second, the Esprit de Sport award, from the sports and racing classes. We are especially grateful for the efforts of all exhibitors to prepare and bring their rolling works of art to our show to delight the public and support our worthy cause. Thank you all for coming,

From the Arthritis Foundation

Kids Get Arthritis Too!

W

“Our daughter was diagnosed with JA in both knees and both ankles just before her fifth birthday. She has been on and off various treatments over the last nine years as we have learned how to adapt and flow with the unpredictable nature of this illness. The support from the Arthritis Foundation has been with us from the very beginning. From JA camps, to advocacy days, to the peerto-peer sessions at the JA conference, all of these JA programs through the Arthritis Foundation have helped our daughter be able to voice her feelings about how the arthritis has affected her and learn how to be an advocate for herself. We are so very thankful for the continuous generosity of all of the donors who make these programs possible and will continue to give back to the foundation that has helped us manage our daughter’s illness with confidence.” These programs, along with continued research into a cure, would not be possible without the support of our partners. The Concours d’Elegance has been our leading JA partner and supporter of our programs for more than eight years and a benefactor of the Arthritis Foundation Ohio River Valley for 40 years. Through the support of the Concours, we have been able to create great programs and resources that have benefited all of our local JA families.

Thank you, Concours d’Elegance! 16 | Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance

Hagerty Youth Judging Program Hagerty representative Stephanie Ruotsala joins us once again to head up the 2017 Youth Judging Program at the Cincinnati Concours. Reaching the seventh year of our “Partnership for Youth” with Hagerty, we proudly continue to have one of the largest youth judging teams in the country. The opportunity to offer this valuable mentoring program, so generously sponsored by Hagerty, will play an important role in helping the Cincinnati Concours reach many more historic milestones through the involvement of new generations of enthusiasts. Hagerty provides the official judging gear—including T-shirts, hats, and scorecards—and helps teach our young judges about the cars and evaluation criteria. A small group of cars are preselected to be scored by the Youth Judges, who also present awards to their top three vehicles. Participants have the opportunity to interact with car owners, carefully inspect each car, and make the determination of their favorites based on the scoring criteria. This program has room for 25 children between the ages of 8 and 15. If you know of a child who may be interested for next year, please contact the Cincinnati Concours Foundation office at (513) 321-1951 or info@ ohioconcours.com.

hen you hear that juvenile arthritis affects nearly 300,000 children, you may imagine all of those children having the same symptoms and facing the same struggles. Juvenile arthritis actually is an umbrella term for a number of childhood diseases affecting the joints and musculoskeletal system. And although these diseases share many common telltale symptoms, like pain, joint swelling, redness, and warmth, they are distinct, and each has its own special concerns and symptoms. Living with a chronic illness is challenging for anyone, but especially for children. It can be hard for kids to understand why they feel sick, have to take medications, and can’t always keep up with their friends and siblings. That is why the Arthritis Foundation’s JA Programs are so important and a great experience for the child with JA, their parents or caregivers, and siblings. The greatest benefit of these programs is getting to meet others who are dealing with similar issues, who share some of the same feelings, experiences, and concerns. It’s a place to exchange ideas, give and receive encouragement, make new friends, and know you’re not alone.

for

40 Years

Celebrating 10 milestones that have made the Concours d’Elegance a proud Cincinnati tradition since 1978. By Steve Smith OPENING DAY BASEBALL. CHILI ON SPAGHETTI. UNION TERMINAL. THESE ARE A FEW OF THE THINGS THAT GIVE our town its unique “Cincinnati-ness.” And without a doubt, the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance, which hosts its 40th annual event this June, sits among the most precious of the Queen City’s crown jewel events. Formed in 1978 when a group of passionate car enthusiasts gathered at the estate of William and Helen Williams, the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance, today, draws more than 6,000 enthusiasts to the picturesque grounds of Ault Park to view the world’s most significant pieces of transportation art. Cincinnati has long been a hotbed of car events, and the Concours d’Elegance is the one show every year that has vehicles rarely seen elsewhere, presented in the beautiful gardens of Ault Park. “Whether coming to see the cars and motorcycles, coming to support the charity, or coming for a day in the park, everyone enjoys the art and beauty of automotive design in such a unique setting,” says Rich Frantz, president of the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance Foundation. In celebration of its 40th annual show, which makes the Concours the longest running of its kind outside of California or east of the Mississippi, we highlight 10 of the key features that make the event so special.

A Cause Beyond Cars

HELEN WILLIAMS’S INITIAL MOTIVATION FOR HOSTING A CAR SHOW in 1978 was to help raise money and awareness to fight arthritis, a disease afflicting her good friend Bill Rudd. Today, the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance continues to designate the Arthritis Foundation as its sole beneficiary. In her 20 years of involvement, Kelly Case, community engagement director of the Arthritis Foundation, Ohio River Valley, has seen firsthand the impact the Concours has on the community. “With the Concours being such a touchstone event in the region, it has been tremendous for raising awareness for the Arthritis Foundation,” Case says. “There’s a myth that only old people get arthritis. However, the truth is that there are nearly 100 different forms of arthritis. Through the Concours, we’ve been able to spread the message locally that arthritis affects more than 52 million adults and 300,000 children in the United States.” In 2006, the Concours began re-directing its funding to focus on programming that specifically helps kids and families who combat juvenile arthritis. For example, the Arthritis Foundation organizes annual JA Camps, where kids with juvenile arthritis and their siblings can spend a week, free of charge, engaging in traditional summer camp activities. It’s all packaged in a safe and encouraging environment where the kids can develop independence, self-confidence, and lasting friendships. “We would not be able to do these types of programs without funding from the Concours,” Case says. “Whether through funding or volunteering, the Concours is involved in 80 percent of what we do locally for kids with juvenile arthritis.” The proceeds from the Concours donated to the Arthritis Foundation since the first event in 1978 have totaled nearly $2 million. However, its contributions to fighting JA extend beyond dollars and cents. “The Concours folks are all very dedicated people who bring ideas to us and are true partners,” Case says. “Of course the event is centered around cars and car lovers, but they all really keep in mind what the event is ultimately about, and that is helping the community fight arthritis.”

3

2 Foundation Formation IN THE FIRST THREE DECADES of the Concours, the Arthritis Foundation, with help from a long list of passionate car-enthusiast volunteers, organized and hosted the Concours. In 2006, recognizing the tremendous work and yearlong dedication needed to plan and execute the Concours, a separate foundation, the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance Foundation, was created to coordinate management responsibilities of the show. “Due to the growth and complexity of the show, which had expanded into a threeday event, the workload was putting undue pressure on the limited Arthritis Foundation staff. It was decided to create a separate nonprofit foundation to take over the complete management and running of the Concours,” explains Dave Sheehy, board chairman of the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance.

WORLD-CLASS QUALITY

THROUGHOUT ITS HISTORY, THE CONCOURS HAS FEATURED AN EXTRAORDINARY array of rolling artwork. “The Cincinnati Concours has become a truly nationally recognized Concours d’Elegance and no longer draws cars from just around the region but from across the country, with major collectors and museums participating each year,” Sheehy says. “The types of vehicles that participate are world-class and can only be seen at a select few events held around the nation. There are literally millions and millions of dollars’ worth of cars on display.” This year’s Concours includes cars and motorcycles from 12 different states, including one-of-a-kind examples such as the 1953 Cadillac Elegante Special Cabriolet presented by Dick Birdsall of Lake Worth, Florida, and nationally acclaimed cars such as the 1938 Delahaye 135MS with Figoni et Falaschi coachwork presented by Greg Ornazian of Troy, Michigan.

Two Wheels, Too

CINCINNATI WAS THE FIRST Concours in the nation to feature a class exclusively dedicated to motorcycles. Throughout its history, the Concours has featured a wide range of significant two-wheeled treasures—from turn-of-the-century Indians and Harleys to modern-day super bikes from Italy, Britain, and Japan.

5

Transportation A to Z

THE ARRAY OF VEHICLES AT the Concours doesn’t stop with just cars and motorcycles. In fact, over the years the Concours has hosted special displays of handcrafted wooden pleasure boats, pickup trucks, fire trucks, and even the Batmobiles and James Bond Aston Martin. The Cincinnati Concours was the first in the nation to include an annual class for Asian collector cars, and this year’s show includes a special presentation of tuner cars, including everything from a 1967 Renault R8 Gordini to a 2010 Lingenfelter-tuned Chevrolet Camaro.

7

6

Stunning Settings

SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1978, THE CINCINNATI CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE has distinguished itself with an array of unique and scenic locations. First held at the Williams’s estate in Anderson Township, the Concours has been hosted by the 1920s-era Peterloon Mansion, the rolling hills of the Cincinnati Country Day School, and Indian Hill High School. In 1996, the show moved to its current home, Ault Park, where gorgeous flower gardens serve as natural dividers among the various car classes. “We really believe that our location at Ault Park makes the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance very special when compared to the vast majority of other Concours events, which are typically held on golf courses. While golf courses offer plentiful room and a nice setting, our ability to display these fine examples of automotive art in the gardens of Ault Park really does set us apart,” Sheehy says.

ENGAGING THE NEXT GENERATION

THE CONCOURS HAS ACTIVELY SOUGHT OUT THE PERSPECTIVE AND PARTICIPATION of the next generation of car enthusiasts, and in recent years formed an Advisory Board. Members of the Advisory Board, whose typical ages range from 20s to 40s, provide a source of new ideas and perspective. “New ideas move things forward. Having a younger generation involved in the planning stages not only keeps the look of the show current, it also attracts younger generations of patrons, creating new traditions and interests for families,” says Advisory Board member Brian Schroeder, a Cincinnati-based vintage auto enthusiast. Last year, the Advisory Board successfully launched a craft beer garden held on Sunday during the Concours, and it will host the event-within-an-event again this year. With the purchase of a $15 ticket, attendees can gain entrance into the beer garden and sample a wide variety of local craft brews.

10 Packed Weekend 8

Engaging the Next, Next Generation

KIDS ARE KEY AT THE CONCOURS as well, and the show is host to the nations’ largest youth judging program. For the seventh consecutive year, Hagerty, the Michigan-based classic car insurance company, and the Concours will partner to assemble a group of 8- to 15-yearold judges. Each young judge receives official judging gear, including T-shirt, hat, and scorecards, which help teach him or her about the cars and evaluation criteria. The youth judges score a small group of preselected cars and present awards to the owners of their top three vehicles.

9

THROUGHOUT ITS HISTORY, THE CONCOURS HAS EVOLVED FROM A one-day car show to a full three-day-long celebration, offering attendees a full menu of events. This year the Concours weekend kicked off Friday night with the Neon & Nostalgia Party at the American Sign Museum, where participants strolled among a myriad of vibrant vintage neon signs. Saturday morning, a full day of action began with an open house at Metalkraft Coachwerkes, a nationally recognized restoration shop. Later in the day a driving tour, starting from the Voice of America National Museum of Broadcasting, included a stop at America’s Packard Museum in Dayton, where a restored Packard dealership now serves as a museum housing the world’s largest collection of Packard automobiles and memorabilia. A Hangar Party held at Cincinnati’s Lunken Airport capped off Saturday evening. And, of course, on Sunday, in addition to the Concours itself, attendees can make reservations for brunch and attend an art show held within Ault Park’s iconic pavilion.

Unique Awards

IN 2013, THE CONCOURS brought an elegant and uniquely Cincinnati flair to its Best of Show Concours d'Elegance and Best of Show Esprit de Sport awards by commissioning Rookwood Pottery to create trophies based on 6-by-9-inch hand-painted tiles that depict the pavilion at Ault Park. Formed in Cincinnati in 1880, Rookwood Pottery is world-renowned for its unique and quality pieces, which today are highly valued and collected.
