THE CHILDREN’S THEATRE OF CINCINNATI + 2016–2017 SEASON

WELCOME TO THE CHILDREN’S THEATRE OF CINCINNATI (TCT), WHERE

in our 92nd season we will explore Wonderland, The North Pole, The Land of Oz, and the African jungle! Theatre can transport us to new and exciting worlds. It’s a place where everyone (young or old) can go to escape reality by being fully entrenched in storytelling, music, dance, > ` Þ i>V Ì i Ì i VÕÀÌ> À Ãið Ƃ ` Ì >Ì iÝ« À>Ì Ã vÌi w i` Ü Ì i>À } Û> Õ>L i life lessons. Alice and Dorothy explore worlds much different than their own. Through their adventures, we learn the importance of taking time to smell the roses, and that there is no place like home. Tarzan and Buddy the Elf, both raised apart from their original families, learn to live and survive in new worlds. In their stories, they realize that they ÕÃÌ i LÀ>Vi Ì i À ` vviÀi ViÃ Ü i w ` } ÕÌ that what makes us different is actually what makes each of us special, unique, and strong. So, whether you are a mad hatter, a tall elf, a wicked witch, or a swingin’ gorilla, our 92nd season is sure to entertain and delight everyone, proving at 92, TCT is still young at heart. Like all children, TCT is going through a growth spurt of its own. There has never been a more exciting time to explore ALL of our offerings. Our outRoderick Justice, Producing Artistic Director reach and educational divisions (TCT On Tour and TCT Academy) are bolder and more exciting than ever as we continue to add new workshops, tours, class offerings, and even a new theatrical series called the Showtime Stage Series at our new facility on Red Bank Road. Please visit our website, www.thechildrenstheatre.com, and explore all the fantastic experiences The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati has to offer. Thank you for continuing to support TCT and our mission. We look forward to making memories with you and your family that will last a lifetime. Enjoy the performance!

THE CHILDREN’S THEATRE OF CINCINNATI + 2016–2017 SEASON

The FUTURE is BRIGHT at TCT S

ince the opening of its new facility in June, The Children’s Theatre is raising the curtain on several new programs and performances that will provide even more children with exposure to the arts. Here’s what’s on the horizon at this theater destination for young audiences—and all the reasons why you should be one of the kids reaching for the stars!

Taking the Stage

At its new home on Red Bank Road, TCT has been >L i Ì Ã } w V> Ì Þ VÀi>Ãi Ìà >ÀÌà «À }À> }] Ü V i> à more TCT Academy classes for future actors, dancers, singers, costume designers—even puppeteers. With the facility’s additional studio space, TCT has the capacity to teach up to 2,400 students in one 12-week session, everything from drama to vocal and dance. This year, technical theatre, costuming, and puppetry will be added to the mix. See You at the Show! N ow you can experience more live theatre with TCT’s Studio Series. Cue: applause! Here are four goodto-know facts about the Showtime Stage Series.

TCT MainStage productions are not leaving the Taft Theatre. The Showtime Stage Series, at our new facility at 4015 Red Bank Road, allows us an opportunity to produce a variety of productions to be enjoyed by children of all ages. There are so many phenomenal shows out there that we just cannot produce on the Taft Theatre stage. Many shows are for very young >Õ` i Við - i >Ài ëiV wV> Þ v À `` i > ` } ÃV iÀð / i - ÜÌ i -Ì>}i -iÀ iÃ Ü } Ûi Õà a chance to showcase these types of works. While each of our four MainStage shows typically play two weekends (and a week for schools), we will host much longer runs on the Showtime Stage—up to 10 weeks at a time!

Come One, Come All! Sensory-friendly Shows

D

uring the 2016–2017 season, TCT is making its MainStage productions accessible to all.

There is one daytime show for each designated as autism-friendly and sensory-friendly. The adapted productions have house lights at 30 percent, sound below 90 decibels, and fewer effects such as strobe lighting. Families have access to professionals trained to work with individuals with disabilities, and TCT provides character guides and social narratives to help individuals understand the show. Research suggests theatre training might boost skills in children with autism, so TCT hopes to create TCT Academy classes for autistic children in the future.

For information about sensory-friendly performances, visit www.thechildrenstheatre.com.

atre group. With Janet Yates Vogt, Mark has co-written the book, music, and lyrics for many musicals that continue to play across the United States as well as in Canada, Europe, South Korea, New Zealand, and Australia. Their works include: How I Became a Pirate, Rapunzel! Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale, The Magical Adventures of Merlin, Sleepy Hollow: A Musical Tale, Anne of Green Gables, Ebenezer, Jingle ARRGH the Way, Snow White and the Prince, River of Freedom, and Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Crown Jewel. Tenderly: The Rosemary Clooney Musical recently had a three-month soldout run at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park and has gone on to play at theatres from California to New York. Along with playwright Joseph McDonough, Mark and Janet are taking a musical look at the famous Cincinnati prohibition bootlegger, George Remus. Mark is represented in New York City by Paradigm Artist Agency, and his works are licensed by Theatrical Rights Worldwide and the Rodgers & Hammerstein organization. Although grateful for his theatre successes, Mark considers his best productions to be his children, Emily and Chris, both students at New York University. Mark’s and Janet’s music can be found on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, and other online music sites. Contact Mark on Facebook or Twitter @markfcomposer.
