John’s Story.

Another Happy Reunion.

When police officer John Cullen reunited with Jordan Bonomo, MD this time he was able to walk and shake his hand. A major accomplishment given that almost three years ago, John fell hard while biking and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He was comatose and taken by UC Health Air Care to University of Cincinnati Medical Center where Dr. Bonomo removed a portion of John’s skull to relieve pressure and monitored him for 14 days. John suffered major cognitive and memory loss and was unable to walk, dress or bathe himself. With determined and decisive efforts at UC Health’s post-acute care facility, John recovered. He’s now reunited with his mobility, his job as a road sergeant and the doctor who saved his life.

Reunite with the things that matter most in your life.

hen I think of the truly memorable and iconic moments in the world of sport – the ones where you remember exactly where you were when they happened - more often than not they have taken place at a “pinnacle” event. An event that every athlete dreams of participating in from the moment she or he was a young child and that is the singular focus at the start of each year; an event that determines who is the world champion; that defines a season or even a career.

“Such an event is coming to Singapore this year – the WTA Finals. I can’t wait to be there.” These great moments in sports often take place in iconic cities of the world, cities that come to be defined in part by the role they played in hosting these inspirational moments. It seems like only yesterday that I was playing the WTA Finals in Madison Square Garden in New York. From New York City, to Los Angeles, Madrid, Doha and Istanbul, and now Singapore, each city gets to shine.

Chris Evert and Eugenie Bouchard at the Road to Singapore launch event.

One just needs to look at the WTA Finals honor roll to know that the best of the best have competed in this historic season finale Venus Williams, me (Chris Evert!), Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, Billie Jean King, Maria Sharapova, Martina Navratilova, Monica Seles, Justine Henin, Martina Hingis, Kim Clijsters and the list goes on. And now as we enter 2014 the start of a five-year run that will carry through 2018, the WTA – in partnership with the sensational city of Singapore – is poised to take its “World Cup” to a whole new level of sporting grandeur and entertainment. A season-ending finale featuring the world’s very best female athletes, battling for the No.1 ranking and a place in history * ’Shiok’ is a commonly used word in Singapore that conveys a feeling of excitement, happiness, and pleasure.

by winning the coveted Billie Jean King Trophy. And what makes the WTA Finals so special is the fact that every match is like a final. The current WTA stars will be playing the season-finale for the very first time in Asia-Pacific, symbolic of the growth of women’s tennis in the world’s most populous and fastest-growing region, where a record 17 WTA events are now held. And for its first foray into Asia for a WTA Finals, what more dynamic city could there be than Singapore? A cosmopolitan and innovative city known for world-class entertainment, culinary excellence, global business exchanges, and adrenaline-pumping sports, Singapore is certainly placed for success as a host city. Home to diverse cultures, two iconic integrated resorts and host of Formula 1’s first night race since 2008, Singapore welcomed a record 14.5 million visitor arrivals and $23.1 billion in tourism receipts in 2012. The WTA Finals Singapore will be staged in what can only be described as one of the very best sporting complexes the event has seen – the $1.3 billion dollar Singapore Sports Hub, featuring multiple sporting and entertainment arenas and fan zones that will make for an exciting entertainment experience.

Chris Evert is an official Ambassador of the 2014 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global and a WTA legend, having finished the year ranked No.1 seven times. She won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 157 WTA singles titles, she won the season-ending WTA Finals four times. She also served as WTA President for 9 years.

Also, for the very first time, the WTA Finals in Singapore will become a true sport entertainment spectacle, with an expanded 10-day schedule featuring not only the best WTA stars battling to be crowned champion, but also WTA Rising Star and Legends events, daily fan festivals, a business conference, industry forums, music events and a VIP Experience that will provide the most inspirational and exciting WTA Finals experience in the history of the WTA. The “Road To Singapore” has already begun, with the WTA Finals serving as our 54 events’ season-ending “World Cup”. The dream of every player is to set foot in the Singapore Sports Hub and to hold the WTA Finals Billie Jean King trophy aloft at the end of the event along with the World No. 1 ranking. Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Li Na… you can bet you will see these megastars in action in Singapore, along with, in all probability, one or two breakthrough stars like a young Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys, Eugenie Bouchard or a star who will have a breakthrough year.

Of course, no one knows for sure who will emerge from another exciting, competitive WTA season to secure their qualification for the WTA Finals in Singapore, but what we do know is that it will be the very best WTA Finals in our history. I know where I will be in October to witness amazing sporting moments and a world champion being crowned in the sensational city of Singapore. And I hope you can join us in person or through the multi-media channels beaming the WTA Finals to close to 200 countries around the world from October 17 to 26 as history is once again made. AS YOU THUMB THROUGH THIS BEAUTIFUL OFFICIAL PROGRAM, you’ll notice that it is

chock-full of numbers. I’d like to highlight a few of the more significant ones here. It has been 115 years since the first ball was tossed at the Avondale Athletic Club, which is now the current site of Xavier University. That year, two talented but unknowing people, Nat Emerson and Myrtle McAteer, became the first champions of what has become the Western & Southern Open. They were never aware that day, as they donned their three-piece suit and white dress (for competition, mind you), that more than a century later we’d be not only talking about their accomplishment but including their images as we celebrate the tournament’s history around the venue. Unbelievable. Another number that holds special significance this year is 20 . In keeping with the tradition of always adding new attractions to our venue, this year we unveil the volunteer recognition wall near the main north entrance. The wall bears the names of every volunteer that has ever given 20 or more years of service to the tournament. Forever connected to that wall will be the new bronze statue of Paul Flory, which will greet all fans as they enter the north gate. The ultimate volunteer, Paul served as the longest tenured Tournament Director/Chairman in the history of the event, at 36 years. The bronze statue is situated to face the volunteer wall, with Paul’s signature finger point directed toward the volunteers who have enlisted with the tournament for at least two decades. Enough reading—there’s a ton of tennis and entertainment occurring right now at the Lindner Family Tennis Center for you to enjoy. Thank you for being a fan and making the trip to the Western & Southern Open.

Sincerely,

Elaine Bruening Chief Executive Officer, Western & Southern Open

WELCOME

Cincy Welcome

O

ON BEHALF OF THE UNITED STATES TENNIS ASSOCIATION, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Cincinnati’s Lindner Family Tennis Center and the 2014 Western & Southern Open. This tournament is truly one of the crown jewels of our sport, richly steeped in history and tradition. The Western & Southern Open, which began its existence as the Cincinnati Open in 1899, is this country’s oldest professional tennis tournament still held in its original city. It has long provided a grand stage for some of our sport’s greatest players to showcase their talents, and that tradition continues to this day. Indeed, the list of those who have won here reads like a “Who’s Who?” of our sport, and last year’s champs—Rafael Nadal and Victoria Azarenka—only added to that legacy of greatness. The Western & Southern Open is one of only five events in the world—three in the U.S.—that feature an ATP Masters 1000 men’s event and a WTA Premier 5 women’s event during the same week. This year’s player field is scheduled to include the Top 40 men and Top 30 women, creating a stellar showcase for both pro tours—and for the great tennis fans of Cincinnati. Indeed, you great fans are a big part of what makes this event so very special. Few tournaments in the world are as fan-friendly as this event, and fans from the Cincinnati area and around the world have responded to that fact with overwhelming support. Last year, this event set an all-time attendance record of 187,183, with 13 sold-out sessions—including the final 11. This is a hot ticket because this event has become a sizzling summer blockbuster. The tournament brings together great players, a world-class venue, and a worldwide fan base—all adding up to an unbeatable experience. The Western & Southern Open has become one of the true highlights of the Emirates Airline US Open Series, and that’s why all of us at the USTA are thrilled to be a partner in continuing to enhance this one-of-a-kind showcase for the sport we all love. Of course, just as important as the world-class tennis played here is the way in which this event gives back to the greater Cincinnati community. Over the past decades, this tournament has given back more than $9 million to local charities, including the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Barrett Cancer Center, and Tennis for City Youth. At this event, there’s a return on every serve. So thank you to everyone involved in staging this world-class event, and a special thank you to all the wonderful tennis fans from here in Cincinnati and around the world whose support has helped to keep this event—and the sport of tennis—growing strong. Enjoy the tournament!

Dave Haggerty USTA Chairman, CEO, and President

Welcome to

the City of Mason

MASON IS PROUD TO BE THE HOST CITY SINCE 1979 for national and international players, coaches, and fans of the Western & Southern Open. We are a city of 31,500 people and more than 800 businesses with deep international ties that operate in Mason’s 18 square miles. Mason has nurtured the marriage between tourism, Warren County’s top industry, and traditional business development. We have worked hard to develop a reputation for being a family-friendly city that is committed to the success of our business community. Over the last decade, Mason has become home to more domestic and foreign companies and has one of the region’s largest complements of international businesses. We were recently honored to host a delegation of lawyers from Chongqing, China, that visited Mason to learn about doing business in America. Festo, a leading multinational manufacturer based in Germany, recently selected Mason and began construction of their $50 million production and distribution facility where the company will be able to provide next-day delivery to 70 percent of its customers. This is a snapshot of the strong economic action happening here. The tournament is part of our success story. The worldwide recognition it brings is of incalculable benefit when our Economic Development team talks with businesses looking for a place to locate. With the city’s overall proactive attitude willing to use innovative approaches and partnerships to help businesses succeed, the tournament and the city are a winning pair. I invite you to explore our neighborhoods, parks, golf courses, community center, schools, and business climate to see why Mason is named number 7 on Money magazine’s top 100 cities and ranked in the top 50 safest Ohio cities by Neighborhoodscout.com. WELCOME

Dear Fans of Women’s Tennis, WELCOME TO CINCINNATI AND THE FANTASTIC LINDNER FAMILY TENNIS CENTER for the Western & Southern Open, a prestigious Premier 5 stop on the WTA calendar, along with our events in Doha, Rome, Montréal, and Wuhan—and a key event of the Emirates Airline US Open Series. As the WTA embarks on its fifth decade as the global leader in women’s professional sports, it is safe to say today’s players—from our inspirational thirtysomethings to our Rising Stars—are living the dream envisaged by Billie Jean King in 1973. In 2014, the world’s best female athletes from nearly 100 countries will compete for a record $118 million in prize money at the WTA’s 54 events and the four Grand Slams. This year’s Cincinnati champion will also earn vital race points on the road to Singapore for the season ending WTA Finals that heads to Asia-Pacific for the first time. The Western & Southern Open’s success is dependent upon hundreds of dedicated volunteers, staff, and the leadership of tournament director Vince Cicero and CEO Elaine Bruening. I would like to pay tribute to everyone involved along with Western & Southern Financial Group and all the sponsors who are committed to making this a world-class sporting event that is famous for its friendly atmosphere and buzz. Indeed, none of this would be possible if not for you, the tennis aficionados who make the Western & Southern Open one of the bestattended events in the world, and all year long support your favorites as part of a global social media community that embraces more than 90 million people. On behalf of the WTA, thank you for your loyalty and support of women’s tennis. Last year, Victoria Azarenka defeated Serena Williams in an epic final here, and I have no doubt you’ll enjoy watching the supreme athletes who’ve assembled to entertain you this week. Sincerely,

WELCOME

Dear Tennis Fans, ON BEHALF OF ATP IT IS MY PLEASURE TO WELCOME YOU to the Western & Southern Open, one of nine elite ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments on the Tour. The Western & Southern Open has established itself as one of the biggest tournaments on the ATP World Tour, offering a fantastic platform for our players to showcase their talents on a world stage. A PROUD & STORIED TENNIS TRADITION

BEFORE THERE WAS A ROSE BOWL, before Army first played Navy on the gridiron, before baseball’s first World Series, before the first Indy 500, and decades before golf’s Masters, the best players in tennis were congregating in the southwest corner of Ohio for a very special tournament. That tournament, at first called the Cincinnati Open, is alive and well to this day, and its 115-year run in the Queen City makes it the oldest tournament in the United States played in its original city. COMMENTARY BY ELAINE BRUENING

1899—The Avondale Athletic Club hosts the first Cincinnati Open. The tournament attracts the finest players from all over the country. This location is now occupied by Xavier University. The Clubhouse was the university’s first student center.

1920–45—The tournament thrives and the list of winners features some legendary tennis names, including George Lott, Bill Tilden, Bobby Riggs, and Bill Talbert among the men, and Ruth Sanders Cordes and Clara Louise Zinke among the women.

1975—Paul Flory

1967—A $15,000 professional tournament is held in conjunction with the amateur tournament. It is the first combination professional/amateur tournament in the world.

1974—Financial stress causes the women’s draw to be eliminated and, for the first and only time, the tourney is played entirely indoors (at the downtown Cincinnati Convention Center). This is the first year that donations are made to Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Despite the financial trouble, $15,000 is donated to Children’s. Since then, more than $7.7 million has been donated to this worthy cause and an additional $1.1 million has been donated to the Barrett Cancer Center and Tennis for City Youth, collectively.

signs on as tournament director, marking a turning point in the success of the event. He enlists the cosponsorship of the Cincinnati Enquirer and Taft Broadcasting (now a part of Clear Channel Communications).

1979—The tournament solidifies its relationship with the Association of Tennis Professionals. Also, the tournament moves to its current site in Mason.

1977—“1977 was my first tournament, and at that time the tournament was played at Old Coney on clay courts. We followed Wimbledon on the calendar, so it was a struggle to get a quality draw since the top players don’t like to play immediately following a Slam. What I remember most was that the Player Lounge was in a rented trailer and the ticket office was in a portable cage that was the size of a telephone booth.” –E.B.

1981—Construction is completed on a new stadium in Mason. It is one of only three tennis-only stadiums in the United States at the time.

1988—“We built the original food court with eight vendors and seating for 200. Up to this point the tournament had offered only traditional concession stand fare, such as hot dogs and popcorn. The food court became an immediate hit with the fans and has expanded several times over the years. Today it features 14 vendors, an entertainment stage, a large video wall, and seating for 1,200. Two of the original vendors (LaRosa’s and Subway) are still with us. Unfortunately, the other six are no longer in business.” –E.B.

1997—A permanent Court #3 is added, making the Open the only event outside the Grand Slams with three permanent show courts.

2000— “As part of a major rebranding of the top tournaments on the ATP Tour, all events at our level became known as the Tennis Masters Series. But even more noticeable than the name change was the decision to go to purple courts so that all the Masters Series events would have a consistent look on television around the globe. Cincinnati was chosen as the testing ground to determine the shade of purple. I can’t begin to count how many gallons of various shades of purple DecoTurf manufactured for us before the final color was chosen.” –E.B.

1990—The tournament

tournament celebrates its 100th birthday and adds a museum to the tennis complex.

1990—“We had a great Opening Night celebration planned to commemorate a major expansion of the Center Court Stadium, bringing it to 10,300 seats and enclosing all corners to make it a full bowl. We hired parachuters to deliver the first ball, but the wind kicked up and only one of the three skydivers made it to Center Court. Of the other two, one landed on Grandstand Court and the other one landed way out on the golf course.” –E.B.

2004—Cincinnati is successful in getting back on the WTA Tour. With the help of a sports marketing agency, Octagon, a tournament is purchased from Bol, Croatia, and moved to Cincinnati for the 2004 season.

2009–10—Construction begins with a new 52,000square-foot West Building, which includes a new player lounge and dining area, locker rooms, press box, six new luxury suites, and 750 covered loge seats. At the end of the 2010 tournament, the building is dedicated and named the Paul Flory Player Center, in honor of the tournament chairman.

2011—“In preparation for the combined men’s/women’s tournament, we built a third television court, five additional courts, a new ticket office, a new main entrance, and the Champions Garden. It was an ambitious project to complete between the 2010 and 2011 tournaments, and the weather didn’t cooperate. Cincinnati recorded the wettest spring on record with 24.78 inches of rain, a full 12 inches above normal. Although he wouldn’t tell me at the time, our general contractor admitted to me later that he really didn’t think they were going to get done on time.” –E.B.

Winning both the Rogers Cup (played in Canada the week before the Western & Southern Open) and the Western & Southern Open bodes well for a pro men’s tennis player heading into the US Open. In 2003, American pro Andy Roddick won both the Rogers Cup and the Western & Southern Open before moving on to win the cherished US Open. Last year Spanish champ Rafael Nadal repeated the feat when he won the Rogers Cup and his fi rst Western & Southern Open (defeating 6'10" American John Isner) before capturing his 13th Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.

FAST FACTS ABOUT THE WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN.

TOM GUENTHER

6

Prior to moving into the Lindner Family Tennis Center, the Western & Southern Open was mostly played on clay. However, in 1979, the move to Mason brought with it the use of hardcourt, specifically Decoturf II. This surface is composed of six different layers of materials: filler, heavy rubber, fine rubber, texture for grip, the finish surface, and the lines. A combination of acrylic resin and the rubber granules give the surface both durability and cushioning.

4

The Lindner Family Tennis Center has four permanent stadiums—the only tennis venue in the country other than the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to boast such a complex. Center Court seats 11,435, the Grandstand Court has a capacity of 5,000, Court #3 can host 3,500, and Court #9 seats 2,500.

35,000

More than 35,000 annuals of 20 different varieties cover the grounds of the Lindner Family Tennis Center, as well as more than 500 trees and shrubs. Nearly 150 yards of mulch and 500 hours of labor are required to prepare the grounds for tournament time.

1981

John McEnroe was the last player to win in Cincinnati with a wooden racquet when he captured the 1981 title.

$9,000,000

While the focus at the Western & Southern Open is on the tennis, at its heart the tourney is actually a charity fund-raiser. Through the decades, the tournament has given more than $9 million to key community beneficiaries. Making this possible is the fact that the tourney is largely a volunteerdriven event with more than 1,300 volunteers serving on one of 33 different committees.

Sure, the Western & Southern Open is a world-class tennis tournament, but it’s also a fashion show, a celebration of our military, and a family fun venue. During the nine days of the tourney, various special events are held to offer attendees unique opportunities. For example, Graeter’s Kids Day affords local youths the chance to do drills and games on the field of play, while Night on the Runway brings couture to the courts in the form of an evening fashion show.

$

At the first Cincinnati Open held in 1899, there was no trophy or cash purse awarded, but players did compete for valuable prizes. The winner of the men’s singles received a Rookwood Pottery ale set—a tankard and six mugs. The original cost of the set was $150, which equates to $3,200 in today’s dollars.

However, in today’s Rookwood market, the set could fetch as much as $10,000.

William Talbert, the man who holds the record for most appearances in the finals in Cincinnati (14), was a Cincinnati native. Born in the Queen City in 1918, Talbert perfected his game at Hughes High School and the University of Cincinnati before turning pro and climbing as high as No. 3 in the world. During his career Talbert won nine Grand Slam doubles titles, served as captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team for five years, and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1967. In addition to appearing in 14 finals matches in Cincinnati, Talbert also has the tourney’s most doubles titles (six). Talbert won three singles titles in Cincinnati as well (1943, 1945, 1947).

〈〈 EUGENIE BOUCHARD A PHENOMENAL TALENT FROM CANADA, Eugenie Bouchard has rocked 2014 with outstanding performances at the majors by

making it to the semifinals at the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon. Off the court, Bouchard is poised and determined to make her mark on the WTA Tour, but also enjoy life at the same time. When she’s not traveling the world and chasing her dream as a professional tennis player, the 20-year-old enjoys simply being normal. “When I have some time off, I go home to Montreal and visit my family and spend time with them because I don’t see them that often,” she says. The self-proclaimed disciplined and determined young woman says she isn’t a superstitious person. “I think I’m actually superstitious about not being superstitious,” Bouchard says. “For me, it’s about what I do on the court. Whatever I do before or after, I don’t think has much of an impact.” The number of eggs she eats in the morning? That’s not what’s going to win her the match, she says.

to be ranked inside the top 10, Kei Nishikori has long been a talent among the ranks of the ATP. This year has been a breakthrough, taking him to new heights in a game that has broken down over the years due to injury. But to kick off 2014, Nishikori added Michael Chang, the former No. 2 in the world from the United States, as a coach. When he’s not concentrating on his next tournament, Nishikori enjoys sightseeing and shopping. Maybe even more important: having the chance to rest and relax when the demands of the tour become, well, even more demanding. But does Nishikori consider himself superstitious like so many of his tennis peers? No. In fact, he says, “I have nothing.” Instead, he relies on the same routine ahead of matches. “Ten minutes before the match, I try to warm-up the same stuff and do some kind of stretches,” he says. If tennis hadn’t been his career path, it would have been soccer, he says quickly and without much hesitation. “I was playing tennis and soccer when I was a kid and tennis was a little bit better, so I chose tennis,” he says. “My dream was to be a soccer player, too.”

FOR MONICA PUIG, THE TALENTED 20-

year-old from Puerto Rico who astounded crowds in the UK with her run to the fourth round at last year’s Wimbledon, superstitions are still part of her on-court success. “I’m just trying to get rid of them,” she says. They’ve certainly worked in her favor during her budding career, allowing her to crack into the top 50 in 2014. She may want to drop those on- and offcourt inclinations, but there are a couple she admits she simply must keep. “At the French Open I have to eat sushi every day and at Wimbledon I have to go to Chipotle every night,” Puig says. “That pretty much sums it up. But those are the only two I’m going to keep because I like food.” When she’s not on court, Puig likes relaxing in Puerto Rico, spending time with her family. When she’s not playing tennis, she makes the most of her personality, which she describes as bubbly. Once a match starts, however, Puig switches to intense. “I’m very different off the court than I am on the court,” she says. In the future, Puig hopes to one day join the ranks of many other successful athletes and try her chops at journalism. She says she’d love to do broadcasting in sports, especially because they’ve been so meaningful for her growing up. “My whole family loves sports,” she says.

〈〈 DONNA VEKIC players to currently rank inside the WTA top 100 at just 18, is already making huge strides in the top tier of tennis talent. From Croatia, she claimed her first WTA title at the Malaysian Open in 2014 on the heels of runner-up performances at the Tashkent Open in 2012 and the Aegon Classic in 2013. Even more impressive? Beating 2014 Australian Open finalist Dominika Cibulkova in three tight sets, 5–7, 7–5, 7–6 (4). With a background in gymnastics, Vekic started playing the sport she now loves when she was 6. Both of her parents played tennis when they were younger. It wasn’t until winning a national title—just seven years ago—that she decided to make the sport her own. And she’s certainly done that already. Vekic, who says Wimbledon is her favorite tournament to play, has had the challenge of balancing her tennis trajectory with her schoolwork, especially when she was younger. When she’s not on the court, she loves being a normal teenager. She’s a big music fan. “Other than that, I enjoy normal things like hanging out with friends,” she says. If she weren’t a tennis player, Vekic admits she’d be an actor. “I haven’t done any roles yet, but it’s something that really interests me and I’d like to try at some point,” she has said.

The Bulgarian, who is currently dating Russia’s Maria Sharapova, says he tries to enjoy every moment he has when he’s not playing and give his body a well-deserved rest. “It’s so tough when you’re on the road,” he says. “When you go back home you just want to do whatever you want and unwind a little bit with something that has nothing to with tennis.” When he’s prepping for competitive play, Dimitrov does stay on top of superstitions. “I use the same shower before every match,” he says, “so I think that’s a pretty good superstition.” Dimitrov added, “I always like to try to repeat everything I did the day before, but I think all of us are like that.” Like other tennis stars, sports are and always will be his main passion in life. “There’s nothing else from tennis,” he says when asked about any other potential career path. “I grew up in a sports family. 〉〉 JAMEA JACKSON

One of the brightest talents among American women during her prime, Jamea Jackson blasted through some of the greatest stages in tennis as a professional player during the first decade of the 21st century. The Atlanta native earned a career-high ranking of No. 43 in the world in 2006 and scored wins over Maria Sharapova and Jelena Jankovic, among other top-notch talent. A national coach for the USTA since 2013, Jackson relishes her role in player development. In fact, she wishes she had started coaching earlier in her career. “I love it,” she says. “I wish I had coached a little bit when I was younger. I think it brings a whole new way of thinking about the sport. I really enjoy helping the kids.” Working primarily with players ages 12–16, as well as with the pros, Jackson’s tips for junior players focus on the competitive elements she put into practice effectively during her career as a professional. She also includes some tricks she’s learned through her coaching with the USTA and in collegiate programs.

1 2

SET GOALS. “For junior players, I think not getting ahead of themselves or getting caught in the past, staying in the present and fighting for that point is important. Have purpose, try to execute, and move on to play the next point.”

PLAY THE CORRECT WAY FOR YOU. “Some of that depends on game style and weapons,” she says. “The girls, they can watch the bigger names on TV, and they think they just bang the ball.” But learning how to construct the points is important too, including learning to control the middle and being aggressive. It’s also important to play “the game for the future so that you have the shots and you know when to use them,” she says.

3

COMPETE AGAINST ALL TYPES OF TALENT. “Obviously everybody wants to play up, and you need to push yourself and you need to be pushed. But it’s also important to play your level and play down. That’s probably the biggest misconception I see with younger players. It’s important to play against yourself. You can work on adding to your game.”

4 5

FACE THE CHALLENGES THAT COME. “I think that it’s important, even with older kids, to learn from what has happened. Most ever yone wants to shrink away from it, but you want to act in the opposite way.”

ENJOY THE GAME. “The best players, they love it. Overall, it’s a game and you’re supposed to enjoy it. You have to have fun doing it, and if you have the desire, you’ll have a much better time.”

In the past Erik worked at the Riviera Country Club as the head of Elite Player and Academy Development, where he “was responsible for developing a Top-10 national player in every age group of boys and girls,” according to the USTA. He also coached collegiate tennis at Loyola Marymount University and Pepperdine University. Kortland says the overall USTA player development coaching philosophy was developed by Jose Higueras, a 16-time ATP titlist and former world No. 6. This philosophy is implemented into the after-school program. The aim is to teach juniors “that the game is played first with the eyes and mind, second with the feet, and finally with the hands,” Kortland says. Kortland focuses on technical aspects of the game to help junior players succeed.

GET YOUR GRIP. “When starting out, it’s so important that kids have the proper grips. When kids are young, their grips can get all over the place which can be a nightmare or almost impossible to fix when they get older.”

KEY TIPS FOR GRIPS. “For forehands we start with an eastern grip. For backhands we start with the dominant hand in continental and non-dominant hand eastern. The non-dominant hand is used for support and starts in the ready position with the racket out in front and the non-dominant hand at the throat. This is used to change the players’ grips according to forehands or backhands.”

3

SERVE WITH SUCCESS. “It is important to try and get kids into a continental grip as soon as they are strong enough for overhead motions,” Kortland says. “Lots of problems arise with racket faces too open and not being able to pronate later on.” The toss is also key. “It’s important kids have a controlled and consistent toss. If the toss is all over the place you can forget about serving well.”

4

MOVE YOUR FEET TO COMPETE. “When it comes to movement, we teach the kids what we call ‘walking to the ball,’ which is defined as covering distance with one foot after the other instead of hopping to the ball. By moving one foot after another, kids are able to measure distance better and take only the necessary steps to reach the ball instead of taking too many little steps.”

5

WHEN TECHNIQUE NEEDS A TUNE-UP. “Finally, when putting all this together, we teach in an open/closed model,” he says. “This means we try and get the kids hitting and playing as much as the technique allows, which is the open model. When technique breaks down, we go to a closed model, where the problem is isolated so technique can be fixed or worked on with the coach in a controlled environment.” After that, the player will revert to the open model in order to work on the eyes and mind, “along with more advanced feet,” he says.

〉〉 BRIAN SCHUBERT

For Detroit native Brian Schubert, success on court in Cincinnati has been part of his life for years. Schubert currently works at the Five Seasons Sports Club in Cincinnati as director of junior tennis and as a highperformance coach for junior tennis. He’s been recognized for “numerous tennis coaching awards, and has been a vital contributor in transforming Five Seasons’ EX program into one of the most recognized junior tennis programs in the country,” according to the program’s website. Additionally, Schubert is a member of the Midwest Coaches Commission and coaches at USTA camps. A graduate of Xavier University, he captained the men’s tennis team and helped bring the team to its first NCAA tournament. Since attending Xavier, he’s lived in Cincinnati and has even had the opportunity to practice with players competing in the Western & Southern Open. Schubert offers some fitness tips for juniors.

1 2

FITNESS AND NUTRITION COUNT. “A lot of kids are all ears when coaches give them a technical tip or discuss strategy. A lot of times when we talk to them about fitness training, stretching, eating well, or sleeping enough, they don’t look at it the same way. To be an elite tennis player today, kids need to take those other parts of the game just as seriously.”

PRACTICE HIGH INTENSITY EXERCISES IN SHORT BURSTS. “A tennis point normally consists of many short three- to 10-second points, with about 15- to 20-second intervals of time to recover between points. Structure many of your fitness drills to work on exerting a lot of energy for a short spurt, then give 15–20 seconds of time to recover to help mimic a tennis match. These drills may prove more valuable or be a good supplement to longerdistance running to improve endurance.”

3

TENNIS REQUIRES LOTS OF LATERAL MOVEMENT. “When trying to improve your movement on the tennis court, remember that the majority of your movement will be side-to-side. A lot of times kids and coaches forget to incorporate ways to work on lateral movement in their footwork and fitness drills when it is such a huge part of the game.”

4 5

IMPROVE YOUR RECOVERY. “Whether it is after a match or practice, tennis is becoming more and more physically demanding and your recovery habits are very important. Make sure you are aware of ways to help your body recover by fueling it within the first hour after your practice or match.”

MIX IN OTHER SPORTS. “Playing other sports can be a fun and productive way to work on improving your fitness. Being a great athlete is pivotal to being a great tennis player, so playing other sports oftentimes can be a great way to improve your overall athletic skill set.”

BROADCASTER Q&A

Q&A:

TONY TRABERT

From humble beginnings in Cincinnati, Tony Trabert developed into an international tennis superstar.

F

FEW PROS CAN BOAST a tennis career as successful and varied as Tony Trabert’s: NCAA Champion, 10 Grand Slam wins, No. 1 world ranking, Davis Cup Captain, bestselling author, and 30 years of color commenting for CBS Television. In 1955, Trabert put together one of the greatest runs in the history of American men’s tennis, winning the French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open. That year, Trabert won 18 tournaments with a spectacular record of 106 wins to only 7 losses. In 1970, Trabert was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. And it all began in Cincinnati. We sat down with Trabert, now 83, to recall his amazing run in international tennis. You were born and raised in Cincinnati. When did you first get involved in tennis? I was born at Christ Hospital in 1930, with the Depression going on. We lived in Bond Hill on Franklin Avenue, which was a dead-end street that ran into the Bond Hill Playground. I was the youngest of three boys. I remember my dad saying to us that he wanted to keep us involved in sports so that, “you don’t have time to be a drugstore cowboy—sit around in the afternoon and get in trouble.” We had a lot of kids in the neighborhood, so growing up I spent all day, every day at the playground, which had four clay courts, a baseball diamond, a swimming pool, and enough area to play touch football. I hit my first tennis ball when I was 6. We had some of the better city players play at the playground some evenings after work and I began to be a ball boy for them, and then some would hit a few with me. They were very nice to me and one of the ladies gave me one of her racquets and that’s when, at age 6, I really started to play.

〉〉 INTERVIEW BY PETE HOLTERMANN // INTRO BY STEVE SMITH

60

WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN 2014

When did you get competitive? I played my first local tournament at Eden Park when I was 10. The spot I drew was to play the No. 1 seed in

the tournament, a 15-year-old named Don White. Both of our dads were sitting on a bench outside the court. Don White had me 6–0, 3–0. We changed courts and I noticed Don’s dad talking to him. After that my game miraculously picked up and I won the next game. He beat me 6–0, 6–1. When we went home my Dad asked me about the tournament and I said I thought it was fun, that he was way too good for me, but it was a good experience and at least I won one game. A couple years later I realized that when they were talking, Don’s dad had said to him, “This is this little guy’s first tournament, he’s not a threat, so give him a game.” I always remembered that throughout my career and if I was playing somebody that I knew wasn’t a real threat, I’d try to do the same thing. Cincinnati tennis pro Bill Talbert was a big influence on you, and you met him while he was playing in the TriState (now known as the Western & Southern Open) at the Cincinnati Tennis Club. When I was 12, I was three or four courts down from the clubhouse and Bill Talbert came over to play his match. I was this little guy with a sun visor working on swinging at volleys, and probably looking not very mechanically sound. He asked somebody if they thought I would mind if he gave me a tip or two. So he came over and helped me, and I was thrilled. He showed me how to punch a volley instead of swing at it. So then he played his match, showered, changed, and was on his way out and I was still down there punching volleys. I think seeing that, he felt like he wanted to help me and sort of took me under his wing. You’ve had such an impressive, accomplished career in tennis. What was the biggest highlight? I played on five Davis Cup teams, and we won it once. Bill Talbert was the captain of the team in 1953 and we came so close to winning it, but didn’t. So Vic Seixas and Talbert and I really dedicated ourselves to winning the cup the next year. I played Lew Hoad the first day and beat him in four sets. Vic beat Ken Rosewall and then he and I won the doubles, and thus the cup in 1954. That was by far the highlight of my tennis career, personally—having the opportunity to

represent your nation, whether in the service or as a sportsman, was really special. And you followed up that win with an incredible year in 1955. I lost in the semis at the Australian Open, which was two weeks after the Davis Cup. Then I won the French, Wimbledon, and the U.S. So that was back-to-back at Forest Hills, and then at Wimbledon I didn’t lose a set. I think I played in 22 tournaments that year and won 18 of them, plus 17 doubles events. It was a good year, and then I turned pro

Cincinnati has done a marvelous job with the tournament; it’s one of the biggest tournaments in tennis, really just a little step below the Grand Slams.

and played professional tennis into the early 1960s. [In the 1950s the world’s Grand Slam tournaments were amateur events.] How did you transition into television? In 1971 I started in television with CBS. I did 30 years of the U.S. Open for CBS and then 23 years with Australian Network. I had disagreed with some of the things being said on televised tennis and a friend of mine said you ought to be doing television. I called the director at CBS and expressed my interest in possibly doing color commentating. We had lunch, and he said we’ll give you a try. So I started working and I was paired with Pat Summerall. He was the ultimate pro, always ready, always did his homework. Not many people know that Pat was a junior champion in tennis in Florida.

At dinners he would ask me a lot about tennis, and he had an almost photographic memory. And we just got along very well and had fun together. You played basketball growing up, and in fact played on the University of Cincinnati basketball team. Later, you served as captain of the U.S. Davis Cup team from 1976 to 1980, and your teams won the Cup twice. How did your experience with team sports influence you during those Davis Cup experiences? I think that playing team sports was important in the sense that you have to be coachable to be any good. When the basketball coach tells you to pass the ball to your teammate and then go block the opposition’s guy, you have to do that or you end up sitting on the bench. That’s all there is to it. And that doesn’t hurt you when you get to running a group of guys. So it definitely helped me. And having played in Davis Cups as a player, I also understood the nuances. The most challenging part was picking which players for which surface, and who to play against whom. John McEnroe was on your Davis Cup team. W hat was he like to coach? John McEnroe played his first Davis Cup ever when I was captain. And he played great. With all sincerity, he was the most coachable player I had on those teams. The only thing I couldn’t get him to do was to behave on the court. And I talked to him the whole time about that. He came to all the team meetings, he came to all the team dinners, and when we worked out a strategy for a given match he would use it to a tee. And he was very gifted. Conversely, [Jimmy] Connors was not coachable at all. You must look at the growth of tennis today and marvel, especially the tournament here in Cincinnati. After the service, I stopped living in Cincinnati, but I’ve always felt very strongly about the area as being my home. When I took my wife back to visit, she said, “Boy these people are nice.” You know, just good, solid, Midwest people. I’m still a die-hard Reds fan. I think Cincinnati has done a marvelous job with the tournament; it’s one of the biggest tournaments in tennis, really just a little step below the Grand Slams. 2014 WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN

UC HEALTH BARRETT CANCER CENTER

A Whole New Level of Cancer Care in Greater Cincinnati Be inspired by UC Cancer Institute. And now, be inspired by the renovation at the Barrett Cancer Center in Clifton. This transformation was a collaboration between the University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute and Rooms That Rock 4 Chemo. Rooms That Rock is a national not-for-profit organization that helps to create positive, healing, and uplifting spaces that spiritually, emotionally, and physically support people coping with chemotherapy. In April 2014, more than 100 volunteers worked around the clock for two weekends to infuse the space where more than 10,000 individuals each year receive chemotherapy and radiation with beauty and inspiration. More than $200,000 was raised to support the project, which included new furniture, decor, and flooring in the infusion suites and waiting rooms.

When you have cancer, you want: … compassionate care … an expert, multispecialty team … care based on the latest innovative research … and inspiration

The design team was spearheaded by Cora Sue Anthony of HGTV fame, along with talented local interior designers. Tom Schiff, a local large-scale panoramic photographer, contributed photographs to the Landscape of Healing, Hope & Inspiration installation. The Barrett Cancer Center is part of the University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute—a leading cancer treatment, research, and education center that works to elevate the level of cancer care in our community with hopes of one day finding a cure for cancer. The UC Cancer Institute includes more than 200 faculty from 11 specialties. Its physicians and researchers have achieved national benchmarks in the collaborative treatment and investigation of brain, breast, gastrointestinal, head and neck, and lung cancers as well as bone marrow transplants, hematologic malignancies, genitourinary cancer, gynecologic oncology, ocular oncology, skin cancer, and sarcomas.
