To the attendees of Cincinnati Concours d'Elegance: On behalf of the State of Ohio, my wife Fran and I welcome you to the 42nd annual Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance, one of the longest-running automotive celebrations of its kind in the country. Ohio is proud to host this internationally recognized event, which showcases some of the rarest and historically significant automobiles and motorcycles in the world. This year’s show looks back at a unique period in American automotive design, the Mid-Century Modern era, from 1948 to 1965. Proceeds from the Cincinnati Concours support juvenile arthritis research and assistance programs of the Arthritis Foundation, benefiting the many children and their families in the Southern Ohio region who are afflicted with this debilitating disease. We hope you enjoy your visit to Ault Park—one of Cincinnati’s many beautiful parks—to view the spectacular vehicles on display, and we thank you for supporting this grand event. Welcome

Welcome to the Cincinnati Concours d'Elegance It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 42nd edition of the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance. This year we celebrate an iconic era of American cars that many of us grew up in: what is now called Mid-Century Modern. If you’re a baby boomer like me, as you walk through the show field, you’ll probably hear yourself saying Gee, that looks just like the car Mom and Dad owned when I was a kid. This was the era of giant tailfins, like on the ’59 Cadillacs, the Chrysler “letter” cars, and the supersonic look of the Studebaker Starliner. These cars were also characterized by acres of chrome and a palette of pastel colors not seen on cars today. Aqua, pink, yellow, and turquoise were the hot colors of the day. This year we also honor the cars that started the U.S. sports car boom of the late ’40s and early ’50s, the cars that many GIs brought home from World War II, the MG. As always, I hope you’ll visit the Will Sherman Automotive Art Show and our ever-popular craft beer garden. New this year is our Legacy Library, where volunteers will be handing out automotive books, magazines, auction catalogs, and posters to kids 6–16 years old to expose them to the wonderful world of car collecting. Parents, please make sure you stop by the booth to pick up free literature for your kids. Finally, Concours weekend would not be the success it’s been for the past 40-plus years without the dedication of hundreds of volunteers and the loyalty of our many returning and new sponsors. On behalf of the Cincinnati Concours Foundation Board of Directors, thank you for supporting the Concours weekend. Enjoy the show!

Welcome

From the Chief Judge On behalf of our entire judging team, welcome to the 42nd annual Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance. Once again the field reflects the spectrum of wide-ranging design, function, and technology of more than 100 years of automotive innovation. The judges are challenged to choose the best entries in each class, based on a number of factors, starting with the elegance of design, presence among the class, and uniqueness of engineering. Condition and correctness are just as significant in the final decisions for Best of Class and additional class awards. The judging team is also responsible for selecting the winners of the many special awards, particularly the two Best of Show trophies (the first from the traditional classes and the second selected from the sports and racing classes). We are especially grateful for the efforts of all exhibitors to prepare and display their magnificent vehicles to delight the public and support our worthy cause. Thank you all for coming,

Kip Wasenko

Chief Judge, Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance

About the Chief Judge Kip Wasenko has contributed 40 years of design and innovation to the automotive industry across the U.S., Europe, and Australia. He is best known for his groundbreaking design of the EVOQ concept car, which initiated today’s “Art & Science” design direction for Cadillac, “making Cadillac cool again,” according to Motor Trend magazine. Wasenko also designed the brand’s Le Mans prototype race cars, an early mid-engine Corvette concept car, and numerous Indianapolis 500 and Daytona 500 pace cars. We are honored to showcase Wasenko as the Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance Chief Judge this year.

2019 Featured Cover Artist Ryan Slattery has been building uniquely handcrafted stainless-steel sculptures and furniture for the past 15 years. Using TIG welding, he forms scrap stainless-steel pieces into mosaic-like sculptures, creating tables, animal forms, and detailed wall hangings. He then incorporates unique grind patterns and polishes the welds to a smooth finish, enabling the object to become one flowing piece. Recently, Ryan has begun adding heat to release the colors hidden in the metal, further accentuating the custom designs.

Steve Petrosky has loved automobiles all his life, beginning with his family’s AMC/Jeep dealership where he “raced” cars on the showroom floor. Speed, color, and motion of racing cars are often subjects of his paintings. Steve’s automotive art is balanced with his commercial art, created solely on computer. His client list includes the Apex Awards, The Kroger Co., Superior Label Systems, W/S Packaging, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Panoz Motorsports, and Doran Racing.

Tom Triplett’s artwork and design of all genres has been a passion his entire life. His family moved quite a bit and eventually settled in Greenville, Ohio, where he began to get serious about automotive art. He attended Gem City College and studied engraving, watchmaking, and gem cutting. Upon moving back to Greenville he was commissioned to do a series of large, 4-foot-by-8-foot paintings of various car models and motorcycles for a local bar that has since become a popular restaurant.

Gerald Freeman relocated to

Daniel Brown, originally from Downs, Illinois, now resides in Troy, Ohio, with his wife, Patty, and three children, Clara, Alice, and Edith. A full-time oil painter since 2003, his subjects vary from classics to hot rods to Midwestern imagery. He often encourages people to step back and then take a closer look when viewing his work to see how the images break apart into loose brush strokes. You can’t help but wonder if you are still viewing what you saw from a distance.

Michigan in 1967, where he owned a studio, Gerald Freeman & Associates. Some of his clients included Tonka Toys, 3M, and high-tech auto-related companies before he pivoted to automotive fine art. His work today is primarily oil and acrylic paints on canvas. He created the last Meadow Brook poster in 2010, as well as the 2017 poster for CCCA at Hickory Corners. Beyond his automobile art, much of his work includes landscapes, aviation, marine life, and portraits. 14

Billy Tackett has been creating art using a toolbox that includes watercolor, ink, and acrylic paint for the past 25 years. He breaks with typical renderings, blurring the lines between mechanical and organic, and achieves painterly car portraits to nostalgic effect. Some of his past projects include designing a city welcome entry sign, a restaurant mural, an entire deck of playing cards, and special-edition steel book DVD covers. His work is represented in private collections and has been published extensively.

Our Charity

Living with juvenile arthritis ( JA) or another pediatric rheumatic disease can feel incredibly lonely. After the dust of the diagnosis settles, the original tests are done, and the treatment plan is established, you may finally look around and feel terribly alone. If you have a child with juvenile arthritis or rheumatic disease, you probably spend much of your time explaining that kids get arthritis, too. You probably have explained it to anyone who questions why your child is limping or in a stroller or wheelchair. You have seen the glances at your child, who may look totally healthy, and you sense the skepticism as people watch your smiling child laugh and play. But they don’t see the warm bath that is necessary because of the pain. They don’t know that sometimes you have to carry your child or stay home from birthday parties just to avoid the bounce house. Others may not truly understand you and your child’s reality. Cincinnati Concours JA Family Camp provided the relief of talking to other families with these same experiences, and it was game changing. All of a sudden we felt part of a larger group, a larger mission, meeting families just like ours. There are nearly 300,000 families in the U.S. who on some level understand this complex part of life. This shared journey connects us. We have this common reality and goal of finding the cause of and cure for these diseases. Along the way we can share strength, ideas, support, and in turn, help each other through. I often hear parents, particularly those of newly diagnosed children, talk about the relief of finally having the opportunity to talk to others who understand. For the children, it is a phenomenal opportunity to be with other kids who get it, without explanation or adjustment. We always leave Family Camp with new information and education; but above all, it is the hope, inspiration, and strength that come from connecting with so many people who understand what we go through. I am not alone. You are not alone. Knowing that can provide beacons of hope as we search for our new normal. Thank you, Cincinnati Concours Foundation, for all of your support. Sincerely, Mary, Proud Parent of Katie (9 years old)

Hagerty Youth Judging Program Reaching the ninth year of our Partnership for Youth Judging with Hagerty, we proudly continue one of the largest youth judging teams in the country. The opportunity to offer this valuable mentoring program, so generously sponsored by Hagerty, will play an important role in helping Cincinnati Concours reach many more historic milestones through the involvement of new generations of enthusiasts. Hagerty provides the official judging gear, including T-shirts, hats, and score cards, and helps teach our young judges about the cars and evaluation criteria. A small group of cars are preselected to be scored by the youth judges, who also present awards to their top three vehicles. Participants have the opportunity to interact with car owners, carefully inspect each car, and make the determination of their favorites based on the scoring criteria. For a second year, our chief judge Kip Wasenko will make a special presentation to our youth judging team. Kip draws from his 40-year career with General Motors Design to share his perspective on car design. This program has room for 25 children, ages 8–15. If you know of a child who may be interested for next year, please contact the Cincinnati Concours Foundation office at (513) 321-1951 or info@ ohioconcours.com.

From 1948 to 1965, a post-war boom helped transform the American automobile. The 2019 Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance celebrates these Mid-Century Modern masterpieces. By Steve Smith

Photos by gary kessler

FRESH OFF A TRIUMPHANT VICTORY IN WORLD War II, American culture was poised for expansion and innovation in the 1950s. After years of sacrifice, the average American was full of exuberance and had some cash in their pockets. Keen to capitalize on the boom, U.S. car companies synthesized a unique combination of factors— visionary design, marketing savvy, new materials, and innovative production techniques—to create a golden age of American automobiles.

22

“Without question the post-war economic prosperity in the U.S. played a big part in transforming car design, says Juan Antonio Islas-Munoz, head of transportation design at the University of Cincinnati’s Myron E. Ullman Jr. School of Design. “The car became a symbol of freedom—a big V-8 and an open road. It is a very romantic idea; you could go anywhere and do anything, and in that way, American cars of the era had a major cultural impact throughout the world.”

In an era defined by the end of World War II, new innovations in materials and design brought fresh life to consumer products used by the masses. Hailed today as Mid-Century Modern, products such as furniture, appliances, airplanes, and cars were reinvented using the new technology and processes that were emerging in design and production. The Mid-Century Modern movement encompassed two seemingly opposite approaches: The first used industrial materials, such as steel, plywood, and plastic laminates, and reveled in synthetic colors and mass production, and the other took its cues from Scandinavian design that treasured handmade items and natural materials. In both cases, however, the common denominators are sleek lines, organic forms, and a celebration of the materials being used—plastic looks like plastic rather than wood; aluminum and steel are polished to a sheen, rather than being covered with upholstery; and so on. In cars, you’ll recognize the Mid-Century Modern style in big, swaggering American cars generously outfitted in chrome, fins, and pastel colors. Moving into the ’60s, the aesthetic was influenced by European cars and became sleeker and more compact, with low-profile cabins and metallic paints.

24

STAR DESIGNERS AND PROGRESSIVE MATERIALS “DESIGNERS BECAME THE FIRST SUPERSTARS OF WHAT WE NOW CALL the Mid-Century Modern era, creating products that are considered icons,” says Mark Fisk, owner of Mainly Art, a nationally recognized Cincinnati-based dealer of Mid-Century Modern furnishings. Take, for example, Raymond Loewy, who designed everything from the corporate logo for Shell Oil to the modern shape of the Coca-Cola bottle. Loewy also designed cars for Studebaker, incorporating several defining design elements— sleek lines, organic forms, and bold colors—into his four-wheeled creations. Cincinnati native John Petru will be showing two such Studebakers at the 2019 Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance, including a 1953 Commander Regal Starliner Coupe and a 1963 Avanti. The Avanti, which translates to “forward” in Italian, is noteworthy for is progressive styling and the fact that it was the first mass-produced four-passenger American car to use a fiberglass body. Experimentation with new materials was a hallmark of Mid-Century Modern design, and 10 years before the Avanti, General Motors used fiberglass to create the iconic two-seater Chevrolet Corvette sportscar. At GM, designers Harley Early and Bill Mitchell shepherded the Corvette to life and had huge hits with the Chevrolet Bel Air, Cadillac Eldorado, and Buick Skylark.

AEROSPACE INFLUENCE “ONE OF THE BIG ELEMENTS YOU SEE IN THE 1950S IS THE MORE WIDEspread influence of aerodynamics and a fascination with aerospace, the space race, and Cold War–era fighter jets,” says Islas-Munoz. “That’s when we start to see fins, rocket-shaped lights, and design elements that make the car look like a space ship on wheels.” On display this year at the Concours will be Cincinnatian John Rogers’s 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz, which shows its aerospace influence in the form of jet-like air intakes and exhaust outlets and, of course, the iconic Cadillac rocket ship tailfins.

MARKETING MASTERY AS WE KNOW FROM THE HIT PERIOD DRAMA MAD MEN, ADVERTISING was another crucial factor in the mid-century American boom, and Ford, GM, and Chrysler all used savvy sales to help turn the automobile into a personal status symbol during the 1950s and 1960s. “Those were the days before widespread use of garages,” says Islas-Munoz, and so the family car was parked out in the driveway and the size, shape, brand, and design of that car said a lot about the person who owned and drove it.” That fascination with the Mid-Century Modern era endures today. Furnishings, architecture, and artwork from the period are collected and treasured, not the least of which are the great American automobiles of the era. A collection of these exceptional cars at the 2019 Concours d’Elegance will showcase how America, with its power, innovation, and artistry, was on the cutting edge of this unique styling period. “Part of the fascination, of course, is nostalgia and Americana,” Islas-Munoz says, but it’s also the fact that it was an era before tight regulations, and so car designers had much more freedom and were able to go all the way in executing a design idea. There’s an aesthetic power in that which still resonates with people today.”

Judge Joseph Cassini III, the 2019 Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance Honored Collector, has a youthful passion for heart-rate-elevating automobiles. By Steve Smith HONORED COLLECTOR PROGRAM SPONSORED BY GOETTLE GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION

Throughout his 24-year career as a New Jersey Superior Court Judge, Joseph Cassini III was known for his thoughtful and even-handed approach to presiding over complicated and noteworthy criminal trials. When it comes to his passion for vintage automobiles, however, Cassini admits he’s really just a teenage boy at heart. “In my youth, hormones and gasoline got mixed together. Most sane people outgrow it, but I never did,” says Cassini, 68. Cassini, along with his wife Margie and daughter Caroline, has assembled one of the nation’s most diverse and well-respected classic car collections, having twice won Best of Show at the renowned Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. He looks for cars with historical significance and great visual appeal. “These cars are works of art on wheels. To be a collector

26

of fine automobiles—that is the pinnacle. You can drive the cars in your collection to get ice cream on Sunday, you can polish and work on them, and you can show them for all the public to enjoy,” Cassini says. Fortunately for us, as this year’s Honored Collector, the Cassini family will be sharing several significant and sexy automobiles at the 2019 Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance. Take, for example, Cassini’s sultry 1961 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series II. As No. 131 of only 200 built, it features a unique combination of Grigio Fumo exterior (translation: smoky gray) and beige interior. Conceived by Ferrari as a more luxurious version of the racing-inspired California Spider, the Cabriolet Series II features four-wheel disc brakes, more modern chassis components, and an overdrive transmission.

When it comes to sultry, few caused more hearts to throb than Rudolph Valentino, whose film roles in the 1920s transformed him into one of world’s first sex symbols. This year Cassini will be displaying a 1927 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A S Roadster by Fleetwood, which was custom built for Valentino. Reportedly, the actor was personally involved in many of the car’s details, especially the coachwork, designed by LeBaron in New York City and constructed by Fleetwood in Pennsylvania. Italian luxury car brand Isotta Fraschini built the chassis and mechanical components, including the Tipo 8’s inline eight-cylinder motor, with a displacement of more than seven liters that could produce as much as 160 horsepower. Unfortunately, Valentino never had a chance to drive the Isotta, as he died in 1926, at age 31, before the car was completed.

Cassini acquired the Isotta in 2001 and, with the help of RM Auto Restoration, conducted a full nutand-bolt restoration. The extensive effort was rewarded in 2018 with a Best of Class award at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Recognition and awards are fabulous, but ultimately, Cassini says, his enthusiasm for cars comes down to the people with whom he gets to share his passion. “I have made great friendships in the classic car hobby. No matter what walk of life you may come from, it all boils down to your passion for the cars. I have been blessed to be the caretaker of these pieces of rolling art.”

Presentation: Ed Lucas JIM IBOLD PRESERVATION AWARD A. James Ibold, known to most as “Jimmie,” became enthralled with prewar Alfa Romeos after watching local mechanic Walker Moeller maintain an Alfa 308 for Indianapolis racing. Jimmie spent 50 years preserving these cars as they came to him and never stinted on anything needed mechanically. Many times parts were made from scratch, as only 40-plus cars were ever built. Cosmetically, he did all he could to maintain the cars in their original condition. Jimmie loved these cars and drove them often for as long as he was able. We were fortunate to have Jimmie display these cars at Ault Park many times. The Jim Ibold Preservation Award is now named in his honor. Presentation: Jimmie Ibold
