A NOTE FROM
the Producer DEBORAH JORDAN
To all my relations, Welcome to the 15th annual publication of the Central Ohio River Valley (CORV) Local Food Guide. Many years ago, I just wanted to get the lists published, but I’ve grown to appreciate how it helps to package the hard work of growing food in a beautiful way, as an invitation to participate. So here is our guide - filled with lists, local photos, local quotes, articles about health, worms, seasoned and new growers. With all the troubles in our world, connecting with local food, growers, and the good Earth is a needed antidote. Who knows, this may be my last year producing this baby (actually now an adolescent) so I want to appreciate all who have contributed their time, talent and finances to map some of our regional riches. Speaking of riches, we visited with folks from the Aiken High School ag program today. How inspiring to learn from a group working with food and food security. For future generations, here’s to growing locally, sustainably, and in community. Here’s to peace on and with Earth. - Deborah

WHAT’S REGENERATIVE? What’s sustainable, or should we say regenerative? The word “sustainability” can be slippery so some people are now using the word “regenerative.” Regenerative growing and grazing practices are those which are “rebuilding organic matter in the soil and restoring degraded soil biodiversity.” Besides the ability to reverse climate change with carbon sequestration, regenerative agriculture improves the water cycle, restores ecosystem health, and therefore positively impacts our health. And don’t we want our children’s children to thrive?

From Desperation to Deliverance, One Farmer’s Journey of Healing & Hope from Medicinal Herbs
B
efore I became a farmer and even after I started farming, I dealt with debilitating migraine attacks. I would return home from work and vomit in the yard before coming inside. I then proceeded to lay down, pack my head with ice packs and vacillate between the bedroom and bathroom to vomit for the next 4-5 hours, all while my migraine pressure pulsated to almost unbearable levels. This went on an average of twice a week for a long time. I felt out of control with the migraine attacks, and prescription medicine was not helping. My family watched me in desperation, incapacitated and unavailable on migraine nights. I heard my children ask their father if I needed to go to the hospital. It was heartbreaking and upsetting in addition to being extremely painful. Finding a way to prevent and stop migraines became a priority. I started doing all the things suggested: finding my triggers, then adding in yoga practice, extra hydration and such. I spent the next 6 years trying different things with varying levels of success that reduced the frequency, but still was unable to control the onset of migraines.
It was at year 6, I found deliverance from migraines onset! I used a combination of fresh feverfew we grew, caffeinated coffee, electrolytes/gatorade in a quick consumption timeline at the onset of migraine symptoms. In these last 5 years since implementation, I have had less than a dozen migraines start and was able to stop them with 100% success rate. I also take preventive steps to reduce migraine triggers from happening. It has been relieving & exciting to find deliverance! I thought there may be others out there who have similar situations and could benefit from improved health using some of these special herbs like I’ve done. Sometimes, finding fresh, organic access to these herbs is challenging. This is the reason our farm, Eden Urban Gardens, LLC, grows and provides these specialty herbs for purchase such as: valerian, feverfew, comfrey, yarrow, calendula, stinging nettles, raspberry leaves, garlic, garlic scapes and many others. Our mission is Enriching Lives Through Organic Produce. We believe this includes access to organic medicinal herbs too. Q

FARMERS’ MARKETS come in many flavors for many needs, from shop and go, to community hubs. Take your bags, your change, and your curiosity. If you have time, take a friend and look around. Shop early to avoid the crowd or late to possibly get a deal. We encourage markets to have vendors label where their produce is from (especially if not from their own operation) and how it’s grown. This is about building relationships with each other and our food and land. (Check Growing Practices p. 14)

Agriculture for the next generation
T
he first day of school is full of anticipation, excitement, anxiety and chaos. Finding your classes, friends and locker are just a few of the challenges students must overcome. When students enter the agriculture classroom at James N. Gamble Montessori High School, they are greeted with smiling eyes and the following question: what is agriculture? Answers to this question range from a simple IDK (I don’t know) to a long list of activities such as tapping maple trees, making herbal teas, crafting beeswax candles and more! These responses easily identify an agricultural alumni from a budding greenhand. In the paragraphs that follow you will hear first hand accounts from two students currently enrolled in agriculture class. One who is in her first year with the program and another who has been in the garden for several years.
Somara’s story-I’ve started to realize maybe school is different from what I see on television and what I hear from others. Academics became more selfcentered and the work only increased. I felt as if I didn’t have enough time to do anything I wanted to...until I was placed in agriculture class. I was excited because my first year at Gamble would really be connecting with the community I had recently joined. I was new to the westside of Cincinnati, so I felt that this school would also be a great opportunity to learn more. Agriculture class teaches us about the importance of food and the ingredients used, while also helping the community of the school. We make our own products using natural
ingredients while also producing the ingredients in our gardens and raised beds. Building the agriculture of the school is going to be a journey, but it’ll be worth it for the future. With the help of our neighborhood community and people with experience, we’ll surely be set for the long run. Alona’s story-Being an agriculture student at Gamble teaches me about the technologies that are involved with food, how foods are advertised and ways to grow your food for profit. For example, learning about using raised beds to grow your plants and what helpful technology the raised beds provide helps students to open up their learning about efficient ways to grow their crops. I strongly believe, on a personal level, that any aspect of agriculture being introduced in classrooms is a vital part of a student’s life like mine. Since I’ve been opening up my learning to the aspects of agriculture for four years now, it’s been a benefit for me to work jobs and help others who may not have much knowledge of certain foods; having that knowledge makes me confident to share the useful information since Gamble has provided this class for many other students like me. Learning more about agriculture gives students the motivation to learn more and create a better environment and community around them while becoming knowledgeable adults. Q

My Adventure Living With Worms
I
have 13,000 worms in my basement. Not something everyone can say.
It started with 500 worms. I was working my first post-college job as an agroecosystem lab assistant in Lexington and renting a small studio apartment. During my college years, I had taken my food waste to the college farm. But with no composting services in Lexington, I would have to find a way to compost with the limited, indoor space I had. (Throwing my banana peels in the trash made me feel guilty.) On a cursory google search, I came across the term vermicomposting. Instead of heaping your food waste in a pile, you feed your waste to worms, who gobble it up and convert it into worm castings. It would be like owning a pet or many little pets, I told myself. On a visit home to Cincinnati, I built a set of stacking wooden boxes and ordered the worms online. When they arrived, I dumped them into one of the boxes and watched the huge ball of worms disperse into the bedding. I was fascinated. A few days later, I began adding food. In a month, the scraps had all but disappeared. I was watching food transform into soil right before my eyes!
Less than a year later, due to family health issues and a growing sense of loneliness in a new city amidst the pandemic, I decided to return home to Cincinnati. However, this meant finding a new job. And no matter which job site I scoured, there did not seem to be many agricultural science jobs for recent graduates. I needed a new plan. I asked myself, if I set aside all the practical factors, what did I want to do with my life? With the world in crisis what could I do to make things better? Vermicompost. I could collect people’s compost. This would reduce methane emissions and produce local worm castings to amend and fertilize soil naturally. With the idea firmly rooted in my head, I started contacting people. Marie Hopkins, the founder of Queen City Commons, a Cincinnati compost company, told me about a waste reduction grant offered by Hamilton County. I applied and got it! The venture has faced its ups and downs. The worm beds have moved from a hoop house to a basement. I killed some worms when I added a load of pumpkin okara to the bed, not realizing it contains a natural deworming compound. I’ve also met interesting people who want to make Cincinnati more sustainable. Every week I get to watch my crew of worms magically transform waste into worm casting. At the present writing, I operate a 120 square foot worm bed with approximately 18,000 worms. I have 11 official compost members. This month we are set to reach 2,500+ lbs composted. I am hoping to grow the business and to make it financially sustainable. But, I’m okay with taking it slow. If the worms have taught me anything, it is that change happens little by little. Q

Growing Practices
photo courtesy of Annie Woods, Dark Wood Farm
(B) Biodynamic: A unified approach to agriculture which tends the soil and the farm as living organisms, considers animals an integral part of a living ecosystem, and strives to bring community into farming. There is a certification process in order to use the biodynamic label.
(C) Conventional: How most farms have operated over the past 50-plus years. Commercial fertilizers and synthetic chemicals are likely used.
(CNG) Certified Naturally Grown: A grassroots, affordable certification program for farmers who sell locally and directly to customers. Its standards are based on the National Organic Program but uses peer to peer inspection instead.
(CRCC) Crop Rotation, Use of Cover Crop: A method to help hold the soil, renew fertility, and reduce pests.
(FSC) Forest Stewardship Council: Practices that respect natural habitats by restricting the conversion of new forestland; prohibiting illegal harvesting, the use of hazardous pesticides or genetically modified trees; and supporting fair labor policies.
(GAP) Good Agricultural Practices: Voluntary audits that verify that fruits and vegetables are produced, packed, handled, and stored as safely as possible.
(IPM) Integrated Pest Management: Matches information with available pestcontrol methods to prevent unacceptable levels of pest damage while using the most economical means and causing the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.
(LS) Low-Spray: Chemicals are used sparingly.
(Non-GMO) Non-genetically modified organisms: Are novel organisms created in a laboratory using genetic modification/engineering techniques. Some growers specify not using GMOs in seeds or in animal feed.
No-Till: An agricultural technique for growing crops or pasture without disturbing the soil through tillage. No-till farming decreases the amount of soil erosion and compaction and often uses cover crops. (O) Certified Organic: The operation is certified by a United States Department of Agriculture accredited agency by a neutral third party professional inspector to meet national standards for raising produce or livestock in a way that does not harm the environment with synthetically derived inputs and that preserves or improves soil fertility, soil structure, and farm sustainability. Some people consider this the minimum for insuring sustainable growing practices. (P) Permaculture: A design system for creating sustainable human environments which, for food production, begins with soil building and focuses on perennials.
(R) Regenerative Agriculture: Conservation and rehabilitation approach to farming and gardening methods that extends organic agriculture. It improves the soil, biodiversity, and water cycle while building resilience to climate disruption.
(PF) Pesticide Free: No use of pesticides on seeds and plants throughout the crop lifecycle.
(SA) Soil Amendments: Such as use of compost and non-synthetic fertilizer to build soil fertility.
(S) Sustainable: Describes farming systems that are “capable of maintaining their productivity and usefulness to society indefinitely. Such systems... must be resource-conserving, socially supportive, commercially competitive, and environmentally sound.” (T) Transitional: Moving to organic. ANIMALS AND THEIR TREATMENT:
(AGA) American Grassfed Association Certified: Animals were fed a lifetime diet of 100% forage, raised on pasture, not in confinement, and never treated with hormones or antibiotics.
(FR) Free Range: At a minimum, animals have access to an outside area.
(GF) Grass Fed: Animals are fed grass or stored hay, but may be supplemented by grains. Grass-finished animals are only fed grass and hay. (HB) Heritage Breeds: Traditional breeds raised by farmers before industrial agriculture drastically reduced breed variety.
(HF) Hormone Free: Growth hormones are not used to force an animal to gain weight, increasing incidences of disease and leading to the routine prescription of antibiotics. (Hormones are not permitted in chicken production.)
(HR) Humanely Raised: Animal stress is limited through sufficient space, shelter, and gentle handling. (NR) Naturally Raised: Animals cannot be given antibiotics, hormones, or animal by-products. (P) Pastured: Animals are raised and forage on pastures a significant amount of time.

Some questions to know your farmer, know your food: · Did you grow this produce yourself? · Where is the farm or plot and how big is it? · What are your growing practices? · How do you use or cook this? · How can we better support local farmers/growers?
Some questions for meat, chicken, and egg producers: · Do you use antibiotics or hormones, steroids, or other growth producers? · How are your animals raised? (on pasture, confined, etc.) · What do you feed your animals? · How large is your operation?

GETTING TO THE MEAT OF IT The majority of meat is produced on large-scale industrial farms called CAFOs (confined animal feed operation) which are inhumane and unsustainable. While there is controversy about the effects of meat production on the environment and concern about meat over-consumption in the US, there is widespread agreement that “factory farms” are unhealthy in all aspects. Local, small-scale farmers are happy to explain how they raise their animals – practices which are not only better for the animal but for environmental and human health. If you eat
meat, eat local meat.

COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA) Community supported agriculture (CSA) is a plan where community members become shareholders, pay an upfront fee, possibly exchange some work, and in return get a share of the harvest and/or other products during agreed upon times of the year. Shareholders are taking some risk by participating in the “adventure of farming” and what is successful that season; shareholders are also getting the benefits of regular connection with a grower and their land. Some of the varied structures of CSAs that have developed are: ownership by a co-op or community, not just a farmer; work and non-work shares available; can extend throughout the year, not just summer and fall; products can include not only vegetables and fruits, but meat, eggs, milk, mushrooms and herbs. Some even ask for preferences or offer a choice of products.

Your “foodprint” is the result of everything it takes to get your food from the farm to your plate.
Interview with a Farming Elder, Steve Edwards
S
teve Edwards is a farmer and current president of the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association (OEFFA). He grew up on the edge of town in Oxford, Ohio where his family lived next to a number of farms that captured his fascination. He fell in love with tractors and would watch them drive through the fields from his window. Beginning at the age of 12, he started working on the neighbor’s farm learning essential farming skills such as how to cope with the weather, fix equipment, and the importance of improving methods along the way. He has applied his hands-on experience and book learning to working on many different sustainable and organic farms in this area. 1. What has motivated you to make farming your life’s work?
3. Tell us about OEFFA. OEFFA’s role is getting consumers and farmers to change to a more sustainable food system. The organization used to be all volunteer but now has paid staff who collaborate with volunteers to provide info, support, and advocacy around sustainable and organic agriculture. For farmers, OEFFA helps facilitate learning from predecessors and colleagues. It’s focused on changing the conventional narrative that farms must get bigger and use chemical inputs. 4. What’s your favorite vegetable? To eat, it’s spinach with eggs. Also, green beans with ham. Favorite to grow is sweet corn. 5. What is your vision for a better food system?
I love to work and be outside. When working the land there is satisfaction to whittling down tasks until completion and a primal satisfaction from producing food. 2. What are the strengths and challenges of sustainable and organic farming? Humans, especially those in our western civilization, often favor short-term gain over long-term benefits; in contrast, sustainable farming creates a framework that values long-term benefits.
First, for more conventional farmers to look at profit per acre instead of yield, reduce oil-based and other off-farm inputs to reduce costs, value the nutrition of food not just the quantity, and convert commodity crop (animal feed/biofuel) operations to farms growing food directly for humans. Second, focus on revitalizing rural communities. This would involve raising, processing, storing, and distributing local food in an economy that supports the people in the community. Third, look at increasing scale and decreasing price of local food which would make it more affordable. We need to make local food more accessible to institutions and lower income individuals. Q
This approach helps address sustainability and ecology problems that are present in conventional agriculture. With sustainable farming not using rescue poisons for weed and pest management, it can be more difficult to manage these factors. Also, soluble fertilizers aren’t used so other efforts must be made to improve soil health, such as getting cover crops in on time. The challenges include sharing specific knowledge of sustainable tactics in a way that convinces conventional farmers to try these out.
