THE DRAMATIC REBIRTH OF CINCINNATI’S DOWNTOWN CORE IS EARNING PRAISE ACROSS THE NATION—THE CITY IS MORE DESIRABLE THAN EVER. 4 DESTINATION PLANNING GUIDE
I
t was 175 years ago, in 1842, that Charles Dickens passed through the Queen City of the West and commented: “Cincinnati is a beautiful city; cheerful, thriving, and animated. I have not often seen a place that commends itself so favourably and pleasantly to a stranger at the first glance as this does.” Cincinnati is no stranger to receiving accolades. But it has never been content to rest on its laurels, even as it remains proud of its historic river city, heartland heritage. Especially in the last decade or so, Cincinnati has received plenty of “up-and-coming” and “emerging” designations as people took note of a $1.4 billion investment in downtown redevelopment and infrastructure that began in 2003, which included a refurbished Fountain Square, a downtown streetcar, and a hotel building boom. Today, the Cincinnati Region has indeed arrived. It is an industrious, 800.543.2613 AND CINCYUSA.COM

progressive, and playful destination with a vibrant urban core that retains its historic charm. It is home to 10 Fortune 500 corporations, dozens of innovative startups, and plenty of exciting restaurants that would top any foodie’s list. There is an entrepreneurial spirit evident in the eclectic shops, art galleries, and microbreweries that are ubiquitous throughout the city’s center. days runs the gamut from arts and culture to entrepreneurship, from shopping to travel amenities. It has been touted as a city with “world class art, extraordinary architecture, and a get-things-done attitude” (National Geographic Traveler), “#1 Best Nightlife” (Forbes), and “Top Places to Travel” (Travel + Leisure). Cincinnati has been designated one of “seven cities that are hipper than you think,” (Jetsetter)
with observers noting the cultural arrival of “buzzy storefronts, outstanding restaurants, and hip bars and art galleries” that make up the revitalization of historic Over-theRhine. It has been named one of “Ten Cool Cities For Millennials to Love” (Upscale Magazine) and most recently, #8 on a list of 52 places to go in 2018 by The New York Times. The city knows how to show off its downtown, launching the annual Blink Festival, with aniDESTINATION PLANNING GUIDE 5

mated light and art installations projected on buildings over 20 city blocks, prompting Cincinnati to be named among the “top cities in the world to visit” last fall (Architectural Digest). Yet, the city still retains friendly Midwest pricing with Cincinnati ranked in “the top ten cities for stretching a dollar” (Successful Meetings). The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), just 15 minutes from downtown, was named the world’s best airport in the 5–10 million passenger range (Skytrax). What’s prompting these accolades? There are several reasons people are talking about Cincinnati: Part of the cozy charm of downtown Cincinnati is its walkability, combined with the wealth of entertainment destinations and amenities you’ll find in a compact area. Just a 10–15 minute stroll from the Duke Energy Convention Center will take you to more than 80 eateries, more than 100 shops, and more than 6 DESTINATION PLANNING GUIDE
3,500 hotel rooms. Easily accessible are several entertainment districts such as Gateway Quarter in historic Over-the-Rhine, where the trendy restaurants and shops blend creatively with 19th century old world architecture. Or you can stroll to The Banks, a mixeduse development along the riverfront, bookended by stadiums for the Reds and Bengals. In the city’s center is Fountain Square and on the east end of downtown is the Jack Cincinnati Casino. The new streetcar, known as the Cincinnati Bell Connector, is another way to get around the urban core, from historic Findlay Market in the north to The Banks at its southern loop. Bike rental stations, known simply as Red Bike, dot the downtown. It’s also easier than ever getting to Cincinnati, with a topranked airport nearby that has drawn the attention of several low-cost airlines over the last few years. Now operating out of CVG are Southwest Air, Frontier, and Allegiant, which join stalwart Delta. Low-cost international
carrier, Wow Air, added service in 2017. Six new hotels have opened in the downtown core since 2011. The wave of hotel openings was capped off by the opening in late 2017 of AC Hotel Cincinnati at The Banks, a 171-room Europeanstyle hotel with balconies overlooking the Ohio River. Outside of downtown, visitors will find the recently remodeled Sharonville Convention Center, a 15-minute drive from downtown, with an adjacent Hyatt Place Hotel that opened in 2017. The Uptown area, encompassing the University of Cincinnati and UC Medical Center complex, features the Kingsgate Marriott Conference Center. Other event spaces include UC’s West Pavilion at Nippert Stadium and Xavier University’s Cintas Center with 15,000 square feet of event space. Yes, 175 years after Dickens’ visit, people are still talking about Cincinnati as a destination that is “cheerful, thriving, and animated”—commending itself to —RICHARD BIRD any visitor. 800.543.2613 AND CINCYUSA.COM

ample a craft beer. Take in a play, symphony concert, or indie rock show. Check out dozens of eateries that would top any foodie’s list, or just jog along the riverfront. These are all things visitors and attendees can do with just a short walk through Cincinnati’s compact downtown, or can access riding the streetcar to various points of interest. The Cincinnati Bell Connector, running in a 3.6 mile loop, can be an entertaining way to experience the downtown’s highlights. It makes the various entertainment centers even more convenient with stops in Over-the-Rhine, Findlay Market, at craft breweries, Fountain Square, Washington Park, and The Banks along the central riverfront. The historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood, just north of downtown, is a stunning example of urban revitalization done right, restoring a historic neighborhood while preserving its unique old world architecture and charm. It is a foodie haven, from its homemade donuts and Belgian waffles to gourmet pizza and high-end dining. Dozens of funky nightclubs, art galleries, and unique shops line the area, bordered by Washington Park, a stunning redesigned urban green space that acts as a front lawn to historic Music Hall. World-class concert and theater venues are clustered throughout the central city. Foremost, there is Music Hall, Cincinnati’s crown jewel of a concert hall, home 800.543.2613 AND CINCYUSA.COM
to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. The 138-year-old building just completed a $143 million renovation, which The New York Times called “a road map” for other cities considering similar renovations. Other art and theater options include the Contemporary Arts Center, the Aronoff Center, and Ensemble Theater. Find cutting-edge rock and soul shows at the reclaimed Woodward Theater or the venerable Taft Theatre.
Cincinnati has rediscovered its famed pre-prohibition German brewing heritage, and is now home to more than 45 craft breweries with another dozen planned for the next year. Among the downtown beertasting highlights are Christian Moerlein at The Banks, Rhinegeist in Over-the-Rhine, Rock Bottom Brewery on Fountain Square, and Taft’s Ale House in a converted church in Over-the-Rhine.
A stroll through Fountain Square on weekends will find the center of the city alive with events that might include rock, salsa, or hip-hop concerts, family movie nights on a giant screen, or special craft and food shows.
Cincinnati has arrived as a first-rate food and restaurant destination that is wildly diverse. To name just a few, the scene ranges from the elegant New American fare of the cozy Salazar’s to the loaded tots at Taft’s Ale House, from the acclaimed Italian-American Boca and Sotto to Cincinnati’s legendary chili parlors and its ultimate guilty pleasure, Graeter’s ice cream.
The Banks riverfront development features sports bars and restaurants along with the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and is home to the professional sports scene with stadiums for the Reds and Bengals. The area features expansive parks with bike and jogging paths stretching along the central riverfront, including the Smale Riverfront Park complete with the whimsical Carol Ann’s Carousel.
If heritage and history is your thing, a number of tours will let you explore spots like Over-the-Rhine, with its iconic mix of late 19th century Italianate, Queen Anne, and Greek revival architecture, or you can go underground to explore extensive tunnels tied to the city’s brewery and saloon history. A Diverse Destination
THE CINCINNATI CVB HAS ANNOUNCED A NEW MULTICULTURAL SALES TEAM AND VIBE CINCINNATI, AN INITIATIVE PLATFORM TO ENCOURAGE AND ENGAGE VISITORS THROUGH ART, ENTERTAINMENT, AND BUSINESS.
T
hroughout the last decade, the Cincinnati CVB has taken a dedicated approach to working with diverse groups. Cincinnati has hosted or booked 19 of the top 25 multicultural groups in the nation, including Church of God in Christ, NAACP, National Baptist Convention USA, Inc., and Omega Psi Phi.
NEW MULTICULTURAL SALES TEAM With a new dedicated multicultural sales team, innovative visitor experiences, and diversifying regional partners, Cincinnati USA continues to stand out, bringing a top-notch experience to convention attendees and
visitors. Because of the deeper focus on diversity, the CVB has seen a continued growth and increased visibility of Cincinnati as a top destination for groups of all races, religions, sexualities, and backgrounds.
ENGAGING VISITORS In the summer of 2016, the CVB launched Vibe Cincinnati, a platform dedicated to amplifying the voice of the region’s diversity. “We are committed to making Cincinnati the most welcoming city in America,” says Mike Laatsch, interim CEO. Vibe regularly hosts activities that showcase the vibrant and inclusive environment that Cincinnati offers. With
diverse tourists visiting the Queen City annually, the CVB created Vibe to enhance and engage visitors through art, entertainment, and immersive experiences. With local partners like the African American Chamber of Commerce, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and the Cincinnati Center City Development Corporation (3CDC), diverse connections have brought together an even stronger foundation in activity with Asian, Hispanic, Indian, LGBTQ groups, and more.
VENDOR DIVERSITY The CVB is committed to diversifying the vendor selection for conventions and offering the best resources for events. From venues and AV companies to catering and transportation, the CVB continues to curate a lengthy selection of vendors for meeting planners to choose from.
