Despite the turbulence, each of the four executive directors brought something important to the Pig, and
Michael Boylan, who brought his legal expertise to the position. “The search for an executive director was going nowhere, and at some point, I offered to take the job,” Boylan says. “I took a leave of absence from my day job, and the rest was history.”
Kelly Weismann, the second executive director, came from working the Disney marathon, one of the only other themed marathons at the time. Her detail-oriented business acumen built on Boylan’s foundation. Next came Scott Maier, whose service industry experience developed the Pig further. When Maier stepped down,

At one Expo, she found herself at the bottom of a tall storage box with no means of escape until help (and a stepladder) arrived.
The Pig’s history bursts with stories and pride. This year, staff are excited about a 101-year-old who routinely enjoys a category to himself running the course. Cosgrove celebrated the Pig’s 10th anniversary by running it as her 100th marathon. The Coughlin Family Cup by Rookwood Pottery
Everyone who completes the Flying Pig gets a medal, but the top male and female marathon finishers win a unique honor. They get to add their name to the prestigious Coughlin Family Cup by Rookwood Pottery. The cup will be displayed in prominent locations around Greater Cincinnati. And, the winners get their own replica of the cup as a keepsake to commemorate their achievement. The Coughlin Family Cup features the Cincinnati skyline and marathon finish area for a beautiful and special commemoration of the marathon.
First presented in 2018, The Coughlin Cup is named for Bob Coughlin, founder of the Flying Pig and part of the legendary group who drew the marathon’s first course in O’Bryon’s Bar and Grill. The Coughlin Family also presents the Flying Pig Community Scholarship Awards, which honor 10 community-minded high school seniors with support for their post-secondary education.

CONGRATULATIONS CINCINNATI FLYING PIG MARATHON
On 25 Years of Serving Our Community From Your Friends at Kroger
There is no limit to what the PigAbilities athletes can do.
In 2022, The Flying Pig welcomed over 500 PigAbilities athletes during the Saturday race. 2023 is expected be the biggest PigAbilities race ever! We invite everyone to come and cheer these athletes on along the course.
If you aren’t familiar, PigAbilities is an incredible movement that celebrates inclusivity and diversity. This program supports individuals with disabilities by creating a welcoming environment where everyone can participate in a fun, one-mile race. People of all abilities can come together and enjoy the thrill of crossing the Finish Swine. Whether you want to run, walk, or roll, this event is open to all!
For over a decade, the PigAbilities program has been made possible through the generous long-time support of sponsors like Ohio Valley Goodwill and Toyota, business partners like Paycor, donations to Flying Pig Charities, and the work of many community organizations and volunteers who are passionate about the PigAbilities race, ensuring the event is accessible to as many participants as possible. Whether you’re cheering on a loved one or helping as a guide alongside them, this event is all about creating a sense of joy, else.
For more information about how to get involved and support PigAbilities, please visit our website.
Flying Pig Adds Expanded Inclusivity Initiatives
This year, the Flying Pig is thrilled to announce the addition of two new divisions for 2023: a 10K Handcycle Division and a Para Athlete Division. These new divisions will provide opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities to showcase their athletic abilities in a supportive and inclusive environment during Flying Pig Marathon Weekend.
While planning to add these new divisions, the Flying Pig Marathon partnered with The Bridge Adaptive with disabilities in the Greater Cincinnati area. The Bridge has worked with our race to ensure the new divisions will be safe and accessible for all participants.
The Toyota 10K Handcycle Division will allow handcycle athletes to participate in a timed 10K race. Handcycles are specially designed bicycles powered by the user’s arms rather than their legs. This division will give athletes who use handcycles the chance to compete in a challenging and exciting race. The top three male and female 10K Handcycle division athletes will be recognized with awards.
The Para Athlete Division will offer opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities to participate in Flying Pig Marathon Weekend. This division will include a range of events, including the 5K, 10K, and full and half marathons. The top three male and female Para Athletes in each event will receive an award.

The newly expanded Flying Pig
Community
Scholars program supports high school runners
Since 2018, Pig Works and the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon have offered scholarships to local high school track and cross country senior athletes planning to attend college. This year, thanks to the Coughlin Family, that program has been expanded from four scholarships to 10, and the amount increased to $5,000 each.
The Flying Pig Community Scholars program extends Pig Works’ commitment in the Greater Cincinnati community through its support of community-minded student athletes with dreams. This is one of the largest scholarship programs for high school runners in the country.
It’s the brainchild of Bob Coughlin, one of the founders of the Flying Pig Marathon some 25 years ago, and is supported through the Coughlin family. “We started the scholarship program to connect with the running community,” Coughlin says. “It is a scholarship for students who either run track or cross country but it also has an element [that considers] their involvement in the community. That connection is something we want to continue to grow.
“We took a look and realized we were getting more than 100 scholarship applications annually. We saw that there was an opportunity for us to do more in terms of our support,” he says.
In 2023, the Flying Pig Community Scholarships were awarded to Ben Johnson, Bennett Turan, Isaac Schachleiter, Keene Bryant, Liam Lakhia, Brooklyn Pickens, Grace McKay, Kate Stiens, Lavina Gryszmajlo, and Madison Rachschulte. These winners were honored at the inaugural Flying Pig Community Scholars Breakfast at Music Hall on April 19 in front of community leaders, sponsors, Flying Pig participants, friends, and family. The event featured an inspiring keynote address from Cincinnati native and Olympian Mary Wineberg and words from Flying Pig Marathon & Paycor founder Bob Coughlin and Pig Works President Iris Simpson Bush. The Scholarship Breakfast will continue as an annual tradition and fundraiser to honor award winners and raise money for the scholarship program.

The Flying Pig Youth Program offers fun for the whole family
Did you know the Flying Pig Marathon has a program just for kids? There’s fun for the whole family of runners! Each year, The Flying Pig Youth Program, sponsored by Cincinnati Children’s, provides an opportunity for kids of all ages and abilities to learn healthy habits and train for a one-mile race. Families can choose to work independently at home or participate in one of the group training programs offered at schools around Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. One school participating in the program is Clough Pike Elementary in West Clermont.

Participating in the Flying Pig Youth Program is a great way for kids and families to stay active and have fun together. The Flying Pig Marathon is a recognized leader in sustainability and greening efforts.
Since its inception, the Flying Pig Marathon has gained a reputation for working to show that large-scale events can be eco-friendly. Race organizers deliberately incorporate responsible and sustainable environmental practices to reduce the consumption of resources, to reuse and donate items, and to recycle as often as possible
Due to the hard work and passion of Denise
to have earned the prestigious Gold Level Inspire promoting sustainability in sports.
At the heart of the Flying Pig’s efforts is a comprehensive recycling program sponsored by our sustainability partner, Rumpke. Over 7.5 tons of waste gets recycled following race weekend. Overall, 72.6 percent of total race waste (cups, cardboard, plastic bottles) is composted or recycled. We also donate over 4 tons of clothing and other items that can be re-used and encourage carpooling and the use of public transportation.
In a world where the impact of human activity on the environment is a pressing concern, we will continue to lead the charge towards a healthier and more sustainable future and hope one day to be able to produce a zero waste event.

25 years running! These dedicated athletes have been participated in the full marathon since the inaugural Flying Pig in 1999, and they’re still going strong! We’re so honored to have these Streakers, presented by Toyota, with us— be sure to look for their black bibs on Sunday and cheer them on!
